Dawn Jean Acton was born on 15 March 1977 in Ashton-under-Lyne, Greater Manchester and her parents Dave and Jean encouraged her to take up acting professionally. At the age of eleven Dawn made her professional debut as the third Tracy Barlow in Coronation Street. Tracy had previously been played by Christobel Finch and Hollie Chamerlette.

Dawn studied at Stamford High School and joined the Oldham Theatre Workshop which has proved a fruitful breeding ground for many young Street actors. She appeared in the chorus line of Peter Pan and Zigger Zagger. She also worked on the shows Our Day Out and Under Milk Wood.

Dawn and her best friend Jennie Sixsmith both auditioned for the role of Tracy but Dawn was the successful one, although Jennie later appeared in The Street as Tracy's best friend Debbie.

Dawn lived with her parents and brother Lee in Oldham and she has a selection of pets including a jack russell, a goldfish, two parrots and a hamster. In 1995 Dawn left the series for a while after Tracy had a kidney transplant and Dawn and her mother opened a bakery called Fairfield's in Audenshaw, Manchester. Dawn also appeared in local productions at the village hall. Dawn rejoined the cast of Coronation Street in 1996 for the wedding of her character to Robert Preston and then another return the following year.

Dawn is dating barman Stuart West and fell pregnant from him during a Greek back packing holiday in 1997. In January 1998 after 11 hours in labour she gave birth to a 7lb 10 oz son, Thomas Kyle but she and Stuart have no plans to marry.
