Holly was educated at Hulme Prep School and studied drama at The Oldham Theatre Workshop.
In 1979 she appeared in the Granada Television production of Fay Weldon's play A Life For Christine before performing in Carousel at the Exchange Theatre, Manchester in 1983. In July 1985 she took over from Christabel Finch as Tracy Barlow in Coronation Street. Holly stayed with the series until March 1988 when she was in turn replaced by Dawn Acton.
Holly then completed her GCSE's and took A levels before going to University to study a degree in Science.
