Joan Francis was born in 1920 into a theatrical family. After leaving school she followed her family into the business and gained a wealth of experience in revue, musical comedies and dramatic plays.

Joan then went into repertory companies and worked with actors such as Doris Speed, Pat Phoenix, Bernard Youens and Arthur Leslie.

In 1960 Joan auditioned for the role of Elsie Tanner in Coronation Street but lost out to Pat Phoenix. The following year he returned to the series as Elsie's best friend Dot Greenhaugh and remained with the series until 1969, having appeared in 83 episodes.

Joan also appeared in the 1966 film Fahrenheit 451 as a telephonist. Joan married actor Geoffrey Reed and Coronation Street star Peter Adamson was best man.

Joan's ill health forced her to retire in the eighties and she moved into a South Manchester Nursing Home where she died on 22 November 1995, aged 75.
