Sandra Gough was born in Manchester on 2 August 1943, the daughter of Lancashire greengrocer Thomas Gough and his stage struck wife Jeannie. She was educated at convent school but her mother was keen to get her involved in acting. Sandra worked for 12 years on radio's Children's Hour before making her stage debut at Oldham and Manchester Repertory Theatres.

Sandra did some modelling work and was chosen to pose as Daughter of Jane for the Daily Mirror cartoon strip. In 1963 Sandra joined Coronation Street as Freda Ogden - who quickly changed her name to the more-exotic sounding Irma. She remained with the series until 1971 when she walked out saying she had had enough. Sandra moved to Spain where she married Spanish night club owner Miguel Mayor, however the marriage was over within a week. She then moved to New Zealand where she worked in a shop. In 1977 Sandra married her second husband, University administrator Nofo Falealli but that marriage lasted just two months.

Sandra returned to Manchester and appeared in the Diane Keen comedy series Foxy Lady. Three years later she appeared in the Granada Television drama Bingo. She returned to the stage to appear in One Season at the Oldham Coliseum and Manchester Library Theatre and appeared in the television movies Paul Calf's Video Diary and Pauline Calf's Wedding Video. She also appeared in the film The Dresser.

Sandra returned to soap in 1988 when she played Doreen Shuttleworth in Emmerdale. She later appeared in Cracker and in commercials for British Beef and Smith's Square Crisps before rejoining Emmerdale in 1995 as the dreaded Nellie Dingle. Sandra stayed with the series for two years before ill health forced her to leave. Sandra dated Judge James Pickles in 1996 but she turned down his proposal of marriage and soon the couple split. Sandra is 5' 3" tall, has red hair and brown eyes and lives in Manchester.
