Judith Gridley was born in Scarborough in May 1946, the only daughter born to Nicky and Len Gridley who owned the Raven Hall Hotel at Ravenscar near Robin Hood's Bay. She had two brothers Michael and Paul, who both went into the hotel trade. At the age of five, Judy attended the local dance academy before going to the Louise Brown Ballet School in Leeds. She was educated at Scarborough Convent School until she was twelve and she moved to Croydon.

Judy joined the Royal Academy and Grandison College, Croydon where she studied until she was 18. Judy then went to France for four years where she danced at the Casino de Paris. This was followed by dancing in Italy. On her return to England she became one of the London Palladium dancers before appearing in the West End production of Cabaret and as Judy Turner in the New York Shakespearian Festival production of A Chorus Line at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane.

Judy appeared in many commercials and made guest appearances on Celebrity Squares as well as being a regular presenter on Play Away. In 1984 she joined Coronation Street for a year as Percy Sugden's niece Elaine Prior who married Bill Webster.

In real life Judy married musician Howard Tibble in 1972 and they lived together in Finchley, London. Judy passed away in October 1987 after a long illness, she was 41.
