Michelle Holmes was born in Rochdale, Lancashire on 1 January 1967 the only child born to Lynne and her husband. Michelle's father walked out on the family and Lynne worked on a market stall to support her daughter. Lynne later remarried and Michelle's half sister Jane was born. Lynne suffered a brain haemorrhage when Michelle was 15 and she moved in with her grandfather, retired plumbers merchant Harvey Cunliffe.

At school Michelle loved acting and took part in a march organised by MP Cryil Smith to get drama back on the national curriculum. She soon joined The Oldham Theatre Workshop and soon her career was a success. She made a name for herself as Sue in the 1986 film Bob, Sue and Rita Too. She also appeared as Jenny in the Brookside spin off Damon and Debbie with Simon O'Brien and Gillian Kearney. Michelle then played receptionist Susan Turner in the Granada Television soap The Practice, a role that lasted two years.

In 1989 she joined Coronation Street as barmaid Tina Fowler, a role she played for two years. Other television roles followed in In Loving Memory, Divided We Stand and Juliet Bravo. In 1992 she appeared in Emmerdale as Archie Brooks' girlfriend Lindsay Carmichael. She appeared at the Bolton Octagon Theatre in Road, Midnight Hour and Eight Miles High before playing Annie in the BBC drama Mr Wroe's Virgins. Michelle then performed the radio play Red Devils before joining Nicholas Lyndhurst in the comedy series Goodnight Sweetheart in which she played Yvonne Sparrow for three series. She then played Maggie Coles in the comedy Firm Friends before taking the role of Marie in Common As Muck.

In 1995 she rejoined Emmerdale as bar manageress Britt Woods, a role she played for a year.

Michelle is single and lives in London and Rochdale and has dated actor Billy Geraghty, sales rep Marek Duchnowski and financial advisor Paul Davies. When not acting Michelle tours in a band with former Coronation Street actress Sue Devaney called The Dunky Dobbers.
