Maggie Jones was born in Yorkshire on 21 June. At school she took an interest in acting and after leaving she enrolled at RADA. Upon graduation, Maggie joined various repertory theatres before making her West End debut.

Her stage work includes Dead Secret, The Women, Cure For Love, Screwball, When We Are Married, Space, Pride and Prejudice, Daughters In Law, Kean and The Orchestra. She has appeared at the Theatre Royal, Plymouth, The Old Vic, Bristol, The Oxford Playhouse and The Salisbury Playhouse.

Maggie has worked extensively on television. She played Smither for two years in 1967 in the series The Forysthe Saga before playing Mrs Quiverful in The Barchester Chronicles. She played Glenda in Rosie and Ivy in Sharon and Elsie. Other television work includes Goodnight Sweetheart, True Love, Just William, In The Cold Light of Day, Men of The World, Fall From Grace, Ruth Rendell Mysteries, Forever Green, A Bit of A Do, South of the Boarder, In Sickness and In Health, The Beiderbecke Tapes, Murphy's Carousal, We'll Think of Something, A Sharp Intake of Breath, Bullman, Sherlock Holmes, Happy Endings, A Day Out and In Loving Memory.

Maggie famously played Polly Barraclough in Sam between 1972 and 1974 before being asked to take over the role of Blanche Hunt in Coronation Street. Maggie had auditioned for the role but it had been given to actress Patricia Cutts who committed suicide after just two episodes. Maggie took over in September 1974 and stayed a regular with the show for four years. She later returned in 1981, 1996 and 1997. This was the third role that Maggie had played in the series, previously she had been a policewomen and a drunken shoplifter.

Maggie was in the feature film Every Home Should Have One. She played Mrs Oakshott in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, Maid in Fall From Grace, Martha in True Love, Joan Palmer in Out of The Blue, Rosie in Bullman and Ena Cooper in Dalziel and Pascoe.
