David Lonsdale was born in Lancashire and after leaving school he enrolled at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. Three years later he graduated and he has worked extensively in television, film and theatre ever since.

His stage work includes Alonso in The Tempest at the Edinburgh Festival, Leones in A Winter's Tale on a British Council National Tour, Kav in Stags and Hens at the York Theatre Royal and the narrator in James and The Giant Peach at the York Theatre Royal. He also appeared in Strive at the York Theatre Royal, Sweeny Todd at the Watermill Theatre and Harvey at The Everyman Theatre, Liverpool. Later stage productions include The Two of Us, Crimes of The Heart and further productions of Sweeny Todd and A Winter's Tale.

His television debut was as Peter Barlow in Coronation Street. He first appeared in 1986 and returned until 1988. David went on to appear in the films Resurrected and Bert Rigby You're A Fool.

David went on to appear on television in Rockcliffe's Babies, Bust, Forever Young, Inspector Morse, World In Action, Moving Story and The Chief. He also played two roles in The Bill - DS Holt and DS Gelder. More recently he has played David Stockwell in four series of Heartbeat.

His film appearances include The Full Monty
