Roland MacLeod was born in 1940 the son of a coalmen in Eltham, South London. He was educated at pubic school and Roland then studied English at Oxford University before he trained as a priest but gave up theological school. After leaving became a teacher at Ryde School on the Isle of White. In 1965 he left and decided to become an actor.

In a packed career he has appeared on stage and in films and television. He played Morris Coates in The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin, Dr Crippen in The Last Remake of Beau Geste, a bank manager in Porterhouse Blues and the role of a vicar in the film A Fish Called Wanda. Roland appeared regularly with Graham Garden, Tim Brooke Taylor and Bill Oddie in various episodes of The Goodies throughout the seventies and eighties.

In 1993 he joined Coronation Street as vicar Bernard Morton who wooed Emily Bishop. Roland stayed with the series for a over a year but was written out after stories about his sexuality and private life appeared in The News of The World.

A year later, Roland returned to television as Mr Lear in the children's series The Boot Street Band, he returned in the second series. He also appeared on stage as Lord Battersby in Me and My Girl and as Potter in the series Berkley Square. Roland is single and lives in London.
