Tom Mennard was born in Leeds and after leaving school he began working as a bus driver in Brighton. He soon became involved in the theatre and began writing and performing in amateur plays.

Tom was then spotted by the singer Donald Peers who recommended him to the BBC in their popular variety show. He later did stand up comedy at the Windmill Theatre where he first performed with Bill Waddington and Jill Summers.

Tom was always in demand for roles in television and on stage but he also had his own radio series called Local Tales. He appeared in the comedy Dad's Army and in the films The Flesh and Blood Show and Four Dimensions of Greta.

Tom lived in Dorset and travelled 250 miles when he took the role of Sam Tindall in Coronation Street in 1985 but he continued appearing in the series until 1989. He was always accompanied, on and off screen by his dog Dougal, who also became a firm favourite with Street fans. Tom died of cancer in Salisbury Hospital on 2 November 1989, he was survived by his daughter Jennifer.
