David appeared in Chesterfield in October 1985 in their production of Twelfth Night alongside actress Kazia Pelka, who would play his wife many years later in Heartbeat. He then played Demetrius in A Midsummer Nights Dream in Regents Park and Pedro Radondo in Fuente Ovejuna for the Royal National Theatre. In 1990 he played Will in Misterioso for the BBC and on stage in A Taste Of Honey. He also appeared on stage in the Victorian classic East Lynn and toured with the Royal Shakespeare Company in Lebanon. Other stage work includes Second From Last in the Sack Race.

He appeared alongside former Coronation Street actress Sue Jenkins in the Yorkshire television children's drama How We Used To Live and in the Screen One's Money For Nothing and Mysterioso. On television he had roles in The Changing Room, As Time Goes By, The Bill, Soldier Soldier and Inspector Morse.

He then played Mick Priest in the forth series of Peak Practice before joining the cast of Coronation Street as hairdresser Jon Welch in 1994. He left the series the following year but was set to return as a regular character in February1996 by buying Denise Osbourne's salon. Sadly, at just the same time, he badly broke his leg playing football for a National Theatre team and he had to spend two months in St. Thomas's Hospital in London, necessitating a major script re-write with Fiona Middleton taking over the salon. David later made a full recovery. He then appeared on stage as Ralph Grayling in the West Yorkshire Playhouse production of Holidays before becoming a regular character in the Yorkshire Television drama Heatbeat as Dr. Neil Bolton.

David is married to Paula and they divide their time between Leeds and London.
