Played: Des Barnes (12 February 1990 - 18 November 1998)Philip's mother, public house landlady Yvonne Lloyd gave him up for adoption when he was just ten days old. He was adopted by builder Alex Middlemiss and his wife June. Philip has a younger sister Nicola, also a daughter of Alex and June.

After leaving school, Philip joined the National Youth Theatre and later took a theatre diploma at LAMDA. After graduation, he began working in theatre in productions including Strippers, Trackers, A Tale of Two Cities, A Christmas Carol and Pinnocchio.

On television he had roles in Inspector Morse, Ladies In Charge, Closing Ranks and Traffick. He appeared with Elizabeth Hurley in the Dennis Potter series Christabel before playing the role of Milton in The Bill. Philip then joined the cast of the police drama Waterfront Beat as PC Barry Smith.

On 12 February 1990 he joined the cast of Coronation Street as bookie Des Barnes and remained with the series until his characters death in November 1998. He only took two breaks throughout this eight year period and proved to be a popular character.

After leaving the Street he joined EastEnders actress Sophie Lawrence on stage in Newcastle when he played Buttons in Cinderella. Phil was also caught by presenter Noel Edmonds and given a famous Gotcha as well as joining his screen wife, actress Denise Welch in starting the National Lottery Draw.

Phil once had shares in a hotel called The Grants Arms Hotel in Ramsbottom but after a year the company went into liquidation. He has also written several screen plays with his drama school friend, actor Gary Webster, whom he shares a flat with in Crystal Palace in London. Philip dated barmaid Maria Culkin for several years but since meeting actress Alison King in a bar in Tenerife in March 1995 they have been inseparable.
