After leaving school Garfield became a dental mechanic apprentice before deciding to become and actor. He then studied at Birmingham Drama School.

He has worked extensively on stage as an actor and director He directed at the Marlowe Theatre, Canterbury in 1957-8 then at the Library Theatre, Manchester in 1959 and 1960. Later in his career he directed at the Northcott Theatre, Exeter and the Nottingham Playhouse. His other stage productions include Eighty Four Charring Cross Road and Misalliance in Vienna and British productions of Ross, This Savage Parade, Diary of Anne Frank and Don't Kiss The Boat.

He has appeared on television in endless shows including You Must Be The Husband, No Job For A Lady, Lovejoy, Born Kicking, Alas Smith and Jones, Second Chance, Dangerfield, Softly, Softly, Dear Mother Love Albert, Shelly, Deceptions, Murder Elite, Murder On The Orient Express, Jenny's War, One By One, Minder, Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased), Department S, The 19th Hole and Spinhoe. He is best known for his role as Heskins in the long running crime drama The Sweeney. In 1961 he did a two week stint in Coronation Street as relief Rovers manager Vince Plummer.

Garfield has done many films during his long running career. In 1962 he played Albert Pooley in Private Pooley. In 1967 he played Mr Moley in Our Mothers House. He was also in To Catch a Spy, Regan, The Pumkin Movie, Man Who Was Hunting Himself, Albert, Digby The Biggest Dog In the World, George and Mildred, Murder Elite, Jenny's War, West End Tales, The Englishman Who Went Up A Hill But Came Down A Mountain and Madigan.

Garfield is divorced from his actress wife Dilys Laye and lives in London.
