Although born in Leeds, West Riding of Yorkshire, Helen was brought up in Morecambe, Lancashire. Her grandmother lived in Bradford (also West Riding) and ran a boarding house for music-hall stars. It was this that is believed to have given Helen her desire to act. She took dance lessons from the age of three, and took part in many school theatrical productions. At the age of ten, she read stories on Granada TV's Scene at 6.30, and appeared in an episode of BBC TV's Z-Cars.At twelve years of age, she auditioned for the part of one of the children in a stage production of The Sound Of Music, at the Palace Theatre in London. She got the part, and stayed in London for nine months. She then went back to Morecambe to finish her education.From then on, Helen never looked back. She attended the Corona Stage Academy in London, and worked in repertory theatre around the south of England, including a year with the BBC Radio repertory company. She has had roles in films such as Oliver! and The Pride Of Miss Jean Brodie, and has appeared on TV in Doctor Who (Colony in Space (1972) ) and The Doctors. She joined Coronation Street in 1974 at the third attempt.She and Michael Angelis lived together for 12 years, before marrying in 1991. She lives in Cheshire, and has a flat in London.
