Michelle was first introduced as a singer for Vernon's band. Liz was jealous because she thought she would be the singer but Michelle was much better. Vernon, thinking he has a chance with Michelle, arranges for Fred to hire her in the Rovers as a barmaid. Vernon is put down roundly but Steve takes a fancy to Michelle, who is a single mum of a young teenage boy, Ryan. It takes quite awhile but eventually Michelle and Steve get together. Michelle's brother Paul finances their other brother Liam who buys Adam Barlow's share of the factory after Mike Baldwin dies and leaves Adam a minority share. Eventually Paul buys out Danny's share as well and the Connor brothers own the factory. Michelle lives in the flat over the Kabin for awhile but eventually moves into the Rovers with Steve.

Their relationship has it's ups and downs, especially after Steve has a one night stand with Becky Granger. Steve manages to cover it up for a few weeks but Michelle eventually finds out he had a fling, though not with whom. Steve tries proposing to her but gets his ring turfed in a skip for his trouble. Steve and Michelle eventually make peace and settle into a relationship. She makes friends with Liz and with the other bar staff.

Michelle is in for a shock however when a strange man appears to be stalking her almost-16 year old son, Ryan. It turns out that this man, Nick, claims to be Ryan's biological father and that his son and Michelle's were mixed up in the hospital at birth. He only recently discovered the truth when Alex was ill. A dna test eventually proved this to be true and Michelle started to get to know her son, though Ryan was not best pleased at the possibility of losing his mother, which, she assured him, would never happen. Things finally settled down. Ryan has got to know his biological parents but lives with Michelle and Alex and Michelle have got to know each other as well though he lives with his mother most of the time and with his father, Nick, the rest of the time. We haven't seen Alex since.

Michelle's first relationship was with a man called Dean. We are unsure whether they were actually married or not. at first, it seemed not but later he was referred to as her husband. Dean was killed in a car accident while out drinking with Michelle's brothers, Paul and Liam and everyone thought Dean was driving while drunk, causing the accident. She was shocked to discover that Paul was driving and since Dean had died at the accident, Paul and Liam make it look like Dean was driving. Michelle was not sure she could forgive Paul and then tragedy struck. Paul was killed in a car accident himself. As if that wasn't bad enough, in October 2008, Liam was also killed by a hit and run driver.

Steve stood by Michelle through all her troubles and tragedy but was drawn in to Becky's schemes to get off of a charge. Becky lied and said she was with Steve on the night of an incident where she'd caused some damage while drunk. Steve lied in court to help get Becky off and then realized he loved her, not Michelle. He proceeded to try to get Michelle to break up with him rather than just do the job himself. He tried to get her friend JD to make a pass at her, saying their relationship was on the rocks, implying Michelle was aware of it. Michelle subsequently found out about Steve and Becky and moved out of the pub, with Ryan, and moved in with Maria for the time being. She has got a job at the betting shop, now owned by Peter Barlow and started to date Peter but was also dating Factory owner Luke Strong. She took a gig singing with mate JD's band for a few months and arrived back mid-summer.

On her return she declined the offers from both Peter and Luke but did get a bit friendly again with Luke. She's surprised to find out that Maria and Tony appear to be an item and runs up against Tony's bad side while staying at Maria's house and getting in the middle between Luke and current girlfriend Rosie Webster. With Maria about to move to Ireland, Michelle planned to rent her house but Maria and Tony took the next step in their relationship and Michelle was out on her own. She was resentful of Maria replacing her brother Liam so soon after his death but in the end, she supported Maria. She leaves to finish the tour and returns a few weeks later. She and Ryan move into the flat over the kebab shop. Liz hires her as a temporary barmaid in the pub, much to Steve and Becky's chagrin but Michelle has managed to come between Rosie and Luke who dumps Rosie but because he was so much trouble, too, Michelle dumps him as well. She has a brief relationship with Jake, a builder.

When Tony confesses to killing Liam and nearly killing Roy, MIchelle was a support for Maria. Ryan took the news very badly and nearly quit school but Michelle managed to calm him down. When Tony goes to court, Michelle loses her cool and screams at him in the courtroom. Carla has also returned and Michelle and she fall out because Michelle realizes that Carla had found out Tony killed Liam and didn't say anything.

When Ryan starts seeing Sian, Michelle is fine with it but isn't comfortable when she catches on that they're using the empty flat for rumpy pumpy but accepts it and defends them when her dad was in a rage against them. She is later upset when Sian leaves Ryan because she's fallen in love with someone else and it later turns out to be Sophie Webster! Ciaran McCarthy returns to the street and Michelle slowly warms to his Irish Blarney but still resists his attempts and winning her heart. It takes months including a bust up with Kylie in the pub when Michelle shows definite signs of jealousy when Kylie is determined to land Ciaran for herself. The bust up gets Michelle fired when she accidentally hits Becky instead of Kylie but Liz as manager pulls rank and lures her back. And finally, when Ciaran has given up and decides to take a job in Glasgow, she realizes she wants him after all and they finally get together. Ryan has started a Performing Arts college but hates it and when Ciaran goes to Glasgow to investigate that job, he takes Ryan who ends up leaving Weatherfield for school in Glasgow. He leaves but Ciaran stays for Michelle!

When the Weatherfield Fairest Barmaid competition comes along, Michelle encouraged Liz to enter in spite of Steve's objections, he wanting Becky to enter instead. Later, using the photos she took of Liz for the competition, Mihcelle and Sean set up a fake "FaceScene" web page under her name so that Sean can try to get in touch with Violet and see his son, Dylan. After a few dodgey men come to the bar to find Liz, Liz is furious when she finds out but after pleading his case, she agrees to run interference for him with Violet.

Carla and Michelle finally make up and Michelle accepts a job at the factory while Ciaran works for Nick in the Bistro. Carla is having financial difficulties trying to keep the factory afloat and is flirting heavily again with Peter Barlow, much to Michelle's disapproval. Late in 2010, Michelle travels to Glasgow to see Ryan and thus is away the night the tram crashes. In the new year, Ciaran finds himself offered a cooking job on a cruise ship and wants Michelle to come with him. She's tempted but wants to work on her new career but in the end, Michelle packs up and leaves with him. THey are gone most of the year and return in November, just to tie up loose ends. They plan to get married in the Caribbean. But Michelle is horrified to discover that Carla has been raped by a new business partner who is now trying to ruin her. Michelle sends Carla off to L.A. for a break and pitches in trying to keep the factory afloat in her absence against all odds. Frank has stolen half the workforce and installed his mother in Underworld to protect his interest there. She gets help temporarily from Nick but when Carla returns, she boots Nick out again. Michelle and Ciaran row about the wedding when she decides she'd rather have a wedding there in Weatherfield. They compromise and she begins planning the wedding but Ciaran loses the deposit for the venue while playing cards. In trying to make up the cash, he gets sacked and when she finds out, she goes ballistic, especially when she finds out he really wants to go back on the cruise ships. They end up realizing that they want different things and Ciaran leaves town alone.

Steve and Michelle find their way back to one another after he is really good helping her deal with son Ryan's problems with drugs. They move in together and deal with Ryan's continuing habit of bringing women home, first Tracy Barlow who was using him to make Steve jealous and later, Katy Armstrong and her baby, Joseph after their flirtation caused Katy's partner Chesney to split with her.

Michelle works at the factory with Carla but is miffed when Carla brings in Peter Barlow, her fiance, to be part owner, reducing Michelle back to PA. Michelle quits the factory and is taken on at the pub. After Ryan leaves and Michelle quits the factory, Steve decides to buy the pub back to make her happy. He partly finances the purchase using an investment from his mother Liz who moves in. Michelle is exasperated that Steve had done this behind her back. She and Liz also make fun of Steve who has decided to take a night class in history, partly to show Amy that he can learn and partly so he has an excuse to skive off. He's made a good friend with fellow student Andrea and Michelle is a bit alarmed that Steve is spending so much time with someone he says is just a mate.
