Handel went to Hardcastle's Factory School with Minnie Caldwell, and they remanied friends ever since. He made his fortune in Ontario, Canada, but wanted to return to his roots, and for a time lodged with Minnie.

After his wife died, Minnie left No5 to look after him, and in October 1976 he returned to The Street to announce to a stunned Ena Sharples and Albert Tatlock that she was going to move out of No5 and live permanently at his house in Whaley Bridge, where the air was so much better for her chest.
