When we met Brian Packham he was the head of the English department at Daisyfield High School to which John Stape had applied using the name of Colin Fishwick. He latched onto "Colin" as a new friend, showing up at his house several times. His marraige was on the rocks and he looked for someone to talk over his problems. When the real Colin Fishwick ended up dead at John's feet in December 2010, John stashed him beneath the floor of the factory which was undergoing repairs. Brian came to see John/Colin, because Colin's mother was trying to find him. John laid a load of bollocks and Brian believed every word. He ran into Julie Carp on the way home and they made an instand connection.

Because John couldn't have Brian around, he alerted Brian's wife to the flirtation. Margaret threw Brian out but because he landed on John and Fiz's sofa again, Fiz managed to convince Brian's wife that Julie was a stalker. Once all of John's crimes came to light, Brian came to see Fiz and commiserate. He ran into Julie again but she wanted nothing to do with him.

Some months later, Julie took Sean Tulley's son Dylan to a reading program at Bessie Street school and was astonished to see Brian leading the group. He'd taken a job at Bessie Street and his marraige was over. Their relationship had a rocky start but they soon realized they were meant for each other. Brian became the Head of Bessie Street and presided over various of the Street's students and events such as sports days and Nativity plays at Christmas.

Julie thought she was pregnant and Brian was taken aback but came round. Sadly it turned out that Julie had a tumour and once it was removed, was now unable to have children of her own.

They bought the flat over the Kabin that Jason owned and renovated and moved in. Julie decided that she wanted to foster children. About this time, Brian was becoming disillusioned with teaching and children in general. He went along with her ideas for awhile but realized he did not want to be a foster parent and told the social worker he didn't like children. When they were subsequently turned down as foster parents, Brian told Julie they were told they weren't suitable.

He then started looking for a different job and was offered one in a museum in north Wales, Wrexham. He decided to take the job but when Julie offered to go with him if he would reconsider fostering, he admitted that he had sabotaged the earlier fostering application. Julie was devastated.
