Maya is a lawyer who initially advised Roy and Hayley about the custody and adoption issues surrounding Tracy Barlow's child, whom Roy thought was his biological daughter. She advised that Roy would have more rights if he and Tracy married but after the wedding, Maya ran into Roy and Hayley in the pub and said that was probably the wrong advice. She was subsequently sacked from the law firm.

Maya was pursued by Dev Alahan until she finally agreed to go out with him. She stole an expensive vase from a shop and she was responsible for the disappearance of Tyrone Dobb's dog, but that didn't stop Dev from asking her to move in with him and getting engaged to her.

Dev realised his true love for Sunita Parekh shortly before it was discovered she had a brain tumour. At this stage Maya had befriended Frankie Baldwin. When Dev broke the news to Maya that he was in love with Sunita, Maya thrashed his flat.

Dev and Sunita got engaged after Sunita recovered from sugery. However, unknown to Dev and Sunita, Maya was marrying seven illegal immigrants in Sunita's name and Sunita was arrested on her wedding day. Dev and Sunita's family managed to sort the situation out and Maya was imprisoned.

She was released on bail, however and one by one burnt Dev's shops in Manchester down. While Dev raced around the city, Maya was holding Sunita captive. When Dev arrived at the flat over the Coronation Street shop, she handcuffed both of them and set the last of Dev's shops on fire, quickly fleeing the scene.

The Coronation Street residents were able to rescue them both, however. Seeing this from her car, a furious Maya attempted to knock them down, but a truck crashed into her. She is now in intensive care.
