Fought alongside Albert Tatlock in the First World War. When his house in was Coalbrook Street was compulsory purchased for the new hospital extension he moved in with his sister in Inkerman Street and looked up Albert again.

He tried to persuade Albert to accompany him down to the Rememberance Day parade at the Cenotaph in London, but Albert refused. Sadly Monty died on the morning he was going down to London. As a mark of respect, Albert laid Monty's wreath at the War Memorial in the centre of Manchester.
