Sidney had fought in Burma in WWII, and after becoming friendly with Maud Grimes, a fellow resident of Mayfield Court, they agreed to to marry, honeymooning in the Far East.
Maud's son-in-law Fred Elliott was supicious of Sidney's motives, and together with Audrey Roberts, took him for a drive. They found his intentions were honourable and he was fairly well-off, but embarrasingly, he died in Fred's car.
When Sidney's will was later published, £10,000 - the bulk of it - was left to Maud, much to the annoyance of Sidney's family.
