Monday (2065, Wednesday 14 January 1981)
Hilda assumes that the Faircloughs' marriage is on the rocks and takes on the role of marriage counsellor. Mike learns that his dad has passed a dud cheque to Fred.

Ivy asks Brian about Elsie being Godmother. Brian tells her no more fights they are having Elsie. Hilda tells Rita her secret is safe with her, so Rita explains that Len would be jealous of Ralph being involved. Hilda decides she would be agood marriage counsellor - and Len will be her first victim. Fred asks Mike to cash his cheque, and when Mike refuse, Fred accuses him of sour grapes. He takes the cheque to Alf, and tells him the deal. Alf cashes it for him, and persuades Frankie to accept £100 as an investment.

Tuesday (2066, Monday 19 January 1981)
Deirdre is surprised when a friend of Ray's turns up from Holland with a birthday present for Tracy from Ray. Rita hears that Hilda's been gossiping about Rita's cabaret dates.

Len tells Rita that he thinks Hilda is trying to tell him something. Deirdre is invited out for a meal with Ken. A Mr van der Stek comes looking for Deirdre. He has presents for Tracy from Ray. He tells her Ray's girlfriend lost the baby , and Ray is thinking of moving onto Germany. Later he comes back to the shop and persuedes Deirdre to break her date with Ken, to go out with him.

Wednesday (2067, Wednesday 21 January 1981)
Alf and Fred are furious to learn that Frankie Baldwin's cheque has bounced, and the CID quiz Fred over his involvement in the blue-video game. Len and Rita have a show-down with Hilda.

Len tells Rita that Hilda thinks she has another fella. It's Tracy's birthday and Alf receives the bounced cheque back from the bank. He tells Fred he wants his money back - Fred has spent it on a new jacket. Mike wont pay them what they are owed by Frankie. The Dutchman comes to see Deirdre and ask her out again. Deidre leaves a message for Ken , with Alf, but Ken walks into the shop as van der Stek is escorting Deirdre out. The CID ask for Fred Gee, director of Gee Whizz videos, and the distribution of questionable material on them. Rita tells the truth to Len, who says it's almost a disappointment, but if Ralph phones again he will kick his teeth in!

Thursday (2068, Monday 26 January 1981)
Ken plays hard to get with Deirdre - then, to his surprise, Dirk van der Stek reappears on the scene. Baby Tilsley's grandmothers disagree over the choice of names.

Eddie is enjoying himself playing with his new piano accordion. Hilda encourages him, but Stan complains that the noise is distracting - he is trying to concentrate on his form guide! Later, Hilda sings while Eddie accompanies her, causing Elsie to bang on the wall, asking for some peace and quiet.

Bert is still scouring the newspaper classifieds in search of work, but without success. Ivy tries to cheer him up, but they end up rowing over the new hat she has bought for David Daniel's christening. When Bert mentions that Father Harris is due at Brian and Gail's to discuss the christening, Ivy grabs her bag and heads out the door. She arrives at Brian's before Father Harris, and won't take the hint that she's not wanted. She buts in continually through their conversation, and is quite put out when Audrey arrives in the middle of things.

At the Corner Shop, Ken is short with Deirdre, and Alf surmises that he is jealous because Deirdre has been seeing her Dutch friend Dirk. Then Dirk arrives and Deirdre agrees to another date with him that evening. Unable to put up with Hilda and Eddie's racket, Elsie bursts into No13. She and Hilda row about the noise. As a parting shot, Hilda tells her that Ivy thinks Elsie is an unsuitable godmother for David Daniel. Elsie then confronts Ivy at the Rovers, who admits what Hilda said is true. Elsie tells Ivy she is going to be the baby's godmother whether she likes it or not.

When Ivy tells Bert about their confrontation, he warns her that there is to be no rowing in church next day. Eddie and workmate Arthur Webster discuss their tactics for the council's upcoming "Cleanest Dustcart" competition. Hilda says Eddie can park the dustcart outside No 13 to give it a good clean.

Deirdre has to work late, as Alf has to attend a council do, so Dirk keeps her company at the shop. Later, when they arrive at the Rovers, Ken is annoyed to see Dirk is still on the scene. Brian and Gail are taken aback when Brian's friend Andy points out to them that the baby's initials will be D.D.T.

Friday (2069, Wednesday 28 January 1981)
There's a surprise for the grandparents at Baby Tilsley's christening. Ken is jealous when Dirk arranges a trip to Holland for Deirdre and Tracy.

It's the Christening Day, and the congregation are suprised at the announcement that the baby wiull be called Nicholas Paul Tilsley. Bert ask Dirk for a job in Holland, and he says he will investigate for him. Ken pulls Dirk in the Rovers, and warns him off Deirdre. He tells Deirdre, and says he won't be back for two months, but invites her and Tracy out to Holland for a holiday. Ken spots Dirk and Deirdre going out of the Rovers, Bet tells Ken him and Deirdre were made for each other, and he shouldn't have stood still. Bert tells Brian about Holland, but asks him not to mention anything right now.

Albert Tatlock interferes to prevent Ken and Deirdre getting together again. Bert has hatched a desperate plan to get off the dole by going to Holland.

Brian asks Bert if he's told Ivy about the job offer. He says's he's mentioned it to Gail. Eddie is still cleaning the dustcart for the final the next day. Fred threatens him with spray on paint, so Eddie volunteers to sleep in the cab. Bert mentions the job to Ivy, who isn't keen on the idea , when she finds she won't be going with him to Holland. Deirdre leaves a messsage with Albert, that she's free to go out for a drink with Ken. When Ken returns, Albert doesn't pass on the message. Fred tells Len that he's thought of another idea for Eddie's dustcart.

Tuesday (2071, Wednesday 4 February 1981)
Despite sabotage, there's victory for Eddie and Arthur in the bin lorry contest. Ken and Deirdre plan a night out to celebrate the re-birth of their relationship.

Eddie is forced to reclean his dustcart when Fred throws bread on top of it and the pigeons leave their droppings. Eddie wins joint first prize, so gets two tickets to the F.A. cup final. Ken tells Deirdre he didn't get the message from Albert, when she is cool towards him. He asks Albert why he didn't tell him, and that it was important to him. Ken tells Deirdre he's really like to see more of her.

Ivy tells Bert if he gets offered the job to take it. When the letter comes Bert tells Ivy he wasn't offered it, but later tell Len he was, but couldn't leave Ivy. It would break her heart. It's Hilda's birthday and Stan remembers, with some prompting from Eddie. They buy her a necklace. Annie suprises them all by deciding to go on a winter cruise. She asks the brewery for a temporary manager to cover her.

Wednesday (2072, Monday 9 February 1981)
Ken fails to turn up for his date with Deirdre - but someone else steps in to take his place. Elsie has trouble with a waitress at Jim's cafe

Elsie is complaing about her waitress Lorraine, who is asked to go to Liverpool by one of the drivers, and slopes off early. Ken asks Dierdre out for a meal, but Deirdre is stood up in the Rovers. Mike asks if she's like a meal out with him. Ken comes in at closing time, saying his car broke down on the moors. The staff tell him she went off with Mike. Annie introduces the temporary maanger to Bet and Fred, and tells them they will see him the next day.

Thursday (2073, Wednesday 11 February 1981)
The relief manager starts to show his true colours, and Elsie has a showdown with waitress Lorraine. Unbeknown to Ken, Deirdre has a second date with Mike.

Lorraine hasn't turned in for work, and when she does she's full of cheek. Elsie sacks her. Deirdre hasn't heard from Ken, so Mike suggests they have a night out to the pictures. Johnny Webb is looking for new lodgings and thinks Elsie may be able to help him out. she says she doesn't take married men. He hears of the sacking and tells Elsie about his niece, Sandra. Elsie tells him to bring her along the next day.

Bet tries on Annie's sunglasses and breaks them. Fred goes back into town to have them repaired, causing Annie to miss her train . The new manager has arrived and tells Bet and Fred off for fooling around infront of the public.

Friday (2074, Monday 16 February 1981)
Deirdre turns down Ken's offer of a night out to entertain Mike Baldwin. There's aggro between the relief manager and bar staff at The Rover's.

The new manager is talking to Hilda who is giving hime all the dirt on Fred and Bet. Betty arrives back to work after the flu. He compliments her by saying Mrs Walker said she was the lynch-pin. Johnny brings Sandra to see Elsie, she starts straight away. Elsie gets an introduction from one of her customers, Wally Randle.

Mike asks Deirdre out for a meal at his hotel. She offers to make him a meal, which he accepts. Later, Ken asks Deirdre out, but she tells him she has made other arrangemenets. Later, as Ken is making his way home from the Youth club, he spots Mike leaving Deirdre's flat. Mr Lewis is not happy with the cellar and tells Fred to get it cleaned out first thing in the morning.

Monday (2075, Wednesday 18 February 1981)
Ken questions Mike about the seriousness of his relationship with Deirdre. Johnny Webb and Wally Randall break up a row in Jim's Cafe when a lorry driver gets overfriendly with Sandra.

Mr Lewis tidies the cellar, and tells Fred to clean the yard. Bet gives Len a pint before opening time for mending a tap, Mr Lewis repremands her.

Ken thinks Deirde should have told him she was entertaining Mike. He wants to know what she is playing at, and that though he said they should be free agents, he finds he only wants one woman - her, and he finds it very painful to see her with other men. Later, Ken asks Mike what the situation is with Deirdre. Mike tells him that they are having a ball.

Sandra is asked out on a date, and when she refuses, the chap turns a bit nasty. Wally steps in and shows him the door.

Tuesday (2076, Monday 23 February 1981)
Deirdre finds out that Ken is proposing an unofficial engagement. Elsie makes a play for Wally Randall - but he's hardly rushing to take her up on it. Tension builds between the staff at the Rover's.

Hilda is the only one not at odds with Mr Lewis. He thinks business is slack and suggests Hotpot suppers on an evening, no extra staff to prepare it though.

Ken goes to see Deirdre. He tells her he is permanately miserable, and he needs to know she'll be there if he needs her, and what about becoming engaged.

Wally tells Elsie he's seperated from his wife, and has an office across the road, renting and renovating slot machines.

Wednesday (2077, Wednesday 25 February 1981)
Following a bust-up between Fred and Gordon, Fred is suspended - and Bet and Betty walk out. When Deirdre makes a decision about her relationship with Ken, it looks as if it's a clear field for Mike.

Mr Lewis apologise to Len, and says he has to be careful, he wants a place of his own.

Fred takes a drink without paying, watched by Mr Lewis. He later suspends him after telling him he saw him take a drink four times. Fred argues and threates him. Bet and Betty walk out in support. He phone two barmaids and asks them to give him a hand.

Mike ask Deidre out, but she refuses as she's still not over Ray. Emily asks Ken if he's given up on Deirdre. Mike tells Deirdre he's thinking of buying a flat, and will she come and view it with him. Wally asks Elise out, they meet in the RR and are the talk of the place.

Thursday (2078, Monday 2 March 1981)
Annie returns from her cruise to find The Rover's in chaos. Mike takes Deirdre to look at a flat

Mike, Deirdre and Tracy go to see the flat. It's up for sale at £28,000.

Annie is back from her holidays and doesn't beleive Mr Lewis when he tells her about Fred, or that Bet and Betty walked out too. Annie wants to hear everyones side of the story. Annie phones Betty to say Mr Lewis grossly overstepped the mark, and that Fred is reinstated. Betty tells her that Bet already has another job, and that she starts there the next day. Carole and Diane are still installed behind the bar of the Rovers, and the customers are happy with them.

Friday (2079, Wednesday 4 March 1981)
Annie sets about restoring peace and serenity at The Rover's. Mike stages a private house-warming party for himself and Deirdre.

Mr Lewis comes to see Annie and is suprised to see Fred behind the bar. He tells Annie that reinstating Fred is a mistake and that Fred is not reliable. Annie tells Mr Lewis she made a mistake bringing him in. He tells her that N & R are looking for him a house, and he wouldn't be suprised if he got the Rovers whn she retires. He tells her he has a meeting at N & R this week. Annie tells him it will probably be to discuss the report she sent them. Bet and Betty come to see Annie to discuss their jobs. Betty says she'll come back if Annie promises that if she goes away again, she won't bring anyone incharge of them.

Mike tells Deirdre he's bought the flat.

Emily lets herself in to find Arnold sitting in the chair.

With Emily's co-operation, the police search for Arnold. Ken ends up in a fraught foursome with 'beauty lecturer' Sonia Price, Mike and Deirdre

Arnold is admitted to a psychiatric hospital, Deirdre helps Mike move into his new flat, and Fred is unusually cheerful

Thursday (2083, Wednesday 18 March 1981)
Fred is tricked into confirming that there's a lady in his life. Deirdre is none too pleased about the way in which Sonia is pursuing Ken.

Friday (2084, Monday 23 March 1981)
Brian is feeling the pressure and it's affecting his marriage. Fred introduces his new girlfriend and she makes quite an impression on Annie and the regulars.

Monday (2085, Wednesday 25 March 1981)
Ken and Deirdre find themselves thrown together when Mike runs off with another woman. A large rates bill makes Brian even more disillusioned with married life.

The paper boys are in dispute at the Kabin, they want a rise to £4 p.w. Len tells them they are out of a job, they tell him the shop is blacked. Rita thinks Len should pay the paperboys the rise. Mike tells Len to give them the rise, leave it a few weeks, then sack the instigator. Penny comes to see Rita, who tells her she should have come to see her, and she'll slip her an extra £1 p.w.

Fred has a girlfriend and Annie has invited her for dinner. Eunice tells Annie that her and Fred met at a singles club for divorced and seperated people.

Mike is holding a house warming. Deidre is acting as his hostess. Ken has brought a friend called Sonia, who dances with Mike all evening. At the end of the party Mike orders taxis to take them to a nightclub. Deirdre says she doesn't want to go as she has to be up for Tracy, and Ken doesn't want to go either. They stay behind and do the clearing up, then get a taxi home together, as Sonia wanted to go to the nightclub.

Tuesday (2086, Monday 30 March 1981)
Hilda's washing ends up on the rubbish tip, and Mike takes it for granted that Deirdre will forgive him for his indiscretion.

Bert is doing the morning paper round for Len and Rita.

Alf asks Deirdre how she went out with Mike, but came home with Ken. Mike has phones Deirdre but Sonia hasn't phoned Ken.

When Ivy learns Bert has been a paperboy she tells him it's degrading. Bert tells her, he's also going to do the evening round for Len and Rita. It's fresh air for him, and some beer money.

Hilda asks Stan to take the rubbish out, and take the clothes to the launderette. You've guessed it? He take the rubbish to the launderette and Eddie takes the bag of clothes away.

Mike comes to see Deirdre and Mike asks Deirdre out but she refuses. He tells her that Sonia mneant nothing to him.

Ivy goes to the Kabin and makes a scene. Rita thinks Ivy has been sent by Bert. But Richard, one of the paperboys gies to see Bert and explains the situation. Bert says that he'd decided not to deliver them anymore.

Wednesday (2087, Wednesday 1 April 1981)
Deirdre finally finishes with Mike and she and Ken pick up where they left off...

Hilda makes Stan and Eddie go to the tip to look for her lost clothes. She's very upset as there were some good blouses and a dress in amonst it all. They'search and search, but it's just too big. Stan pretends to find them, then calls April Fool!

Mike comes to ask Deirdre out. He apologises for his behaviour, but Deirdre says no. She tells him they have come to the end of something, it was fun, but she wants to call it a day. Mike tells her that she'll not have as much fun with the Ken Barlow's of the world.

Hilda stars crying after making a list of all the lost items. They aren't insured, so Eddie decides to start a whip round in the Rovers. They don't get a lot, but Annie offers Hilda a dress.

The paper boys want a rise of 80p, Len offers 50p. Rita suggest 65p. It's settled.

Ken asks Deirdre out and he has got Elsie to babysit. She tells Ken there were no blazing rows between her and Mike, and Ken tells her that he's very pleased indeeed that they have stopped seeing one another.

Thursday (2088, Monday 6 April 1981)
Bert and Ivy worry about the state of Brian and Gail's marriage, Bert tells Ivy not to interfere and then tackles Brian himself.

Fred is having another night out with Eunice. Betty asks him if he's leading up to marriage - or his own pub.

Gail and Brian are in a lot of debt. Gail says they'll have to cut back Ivy and Gail have a night out to the pictures and Brian babysits. Bert goes to see Brian and gibes him a few home truths, and that it about time Brian grew up. He tells him Gail will be ending up as a one parent family if he doesn't mend his ways.

Friday (2089, Wednesday 8 April 1981)
Fred is promised that he will be given a pub by the brewery more quickly if he is married, so he proposes to Eunice and she accepts.

Wally is back in the Rovers, he tells Elsie he's been away looking for second hand machines. Eunice says she's having too much fun as a divorcee, but when Fred tells her about running a pub together, she tells him she would like to be a landlady. Bet tells Fred he'd better check with the brewery to see if they still want him as a manager. Whe he rings, he's asked for an interview. He tells Mrs Walker about his phone conversation, and she asks Fred to keep her informed. When he goes for the interview they tell him he can have a pub of his own. Wally invites Elsie to the pictures. Afterwards they have a drink in the Rovers, and Elsie invites him to come in as her lodger.

Fred aske Eunice to marry him, they have to be married to manage a pub, and Eunice says yes.

Mike sets up a romantic night with Sonia Price - only to have it wrecked by the surprise arrival of Frankie.

Tuesday (2091, Wednesday 15 April 1981)
Elsie introduces Wally as a new lodger to avoid gossip, then stages a seduction scene, only to be rejected and deserted.

After Hilda make comments to Elsie about Wally lodging there, Elsie tells Hilda that Wally is no lodger. Elsie tells Wally that he's a perfect gentleman, most men would have tried it on with her. Wally tries to gently explain that he's not interested in her, only as a friend. He says he's sorry, things should have been made clearer. He gets his things and leaves. Elsie gets the drinks out.

Deirdre agrees to go to Scotland for a holiday with Ken.

Wednesday (2092, Monday 20 April 1981)
Brian fails to get more money from boss Ron Sykes, so Gail goes after a job and plans to leave the baby with a minder.

Elsie doesn't want to go to work after her heavy night drinking. She relents when Sandra rings , begging her to come in. Hilda comments to Bet that there's been no sound from Elsie's over the weekend.

It's Easter Monday, and Brian has to go to work. Gail tells Brian she'll go back to work in the cafe, and pay a childminder, but Brian says no. He asks his boss for a rise or more overtime, but Ron say's there's no money about. Gail and Brian are still fighting over her going back to work, Ivy doesn't think it's a good idea, and suggests that they sell their house and move back in with her and Bert.

Fred goes to buy Eunice and engagement ring.

Thursday (2093, Wednesday 22 April 1981)
After her earlier rejection, Elsie slides further into decline and quits her job.

Gail is still trying to talk Brian into letting her go back to work. Brian still says no, and that he'll get the money from somewhere. Later Ron comes to offer Brian some overtime, working in another garage selling petrol. Brian jumps at the chance, but Gail is not amsued at the thought of Brian working all day and evenings.

The neighbours are discussing Elsie, Hilda thinks Wally has satisfied his desire, then ran off with her purse! Hilda goes to Elsie's on the pretext there are noises coming from her house. Elsie tells Hilda that Wally only stayed one night, but she goes home to check anyway. When she gets back to cafe, Sandra tells her Mr Segwick has been in, and had to help out as the cafe was so busy.

Annie says it won't be easy replacing Fred - he's going to view a pub today. Annie rings Douglas at the brewery to tell him how suitable Fred would be as a manager, but asks him to take things at a steady pace. Fred and Eunice arrive back from their pub visit, full of high spirits. Annie comments that they should not count their chickens before they are in the farmyard.

Len goes to see Elsie, he tries to tell her not to be an idiot. She's not getting any younger, and she's experienced lifes knocks before. Elsie doesn't want to listen, and is gloomier than ever.

Friday (2094, Monday 27 April 1981)
Elsie, humiliated and depressed, stays away from work until Bet persuades her to come on a night out...and Elsie brings home a man with a rough reputation.

Len tells Elsie that she has to snap out of it. She moans about life to him, and how unfair it is, what a fool she made of herself. She's been drinking.

Eunice tells Alf that her and Fred hope to move in with Annie for the time being. Eunice and Fred go to see Annie and ask her if they can both move. She agrees but for a temporary period only.

Bet goes to see Elsie and they decide to have a night out. A man joins them at their table, and Bet walks out in disgust, when Elsie refuses to go with her. He ends up back at her place.

Deidre and Ken arrive back off holiday.

Monday (2095, Wednesday 29 April 1981)
Bill Fielding has spent the night at Elsie's house and the next morning while she is out, his wife comes round and destroys Elsie's clothes.

Elsie has let Bill stay overnight, but can't wait to get rid of him in the morning. He is in no hurry to go, and ask Elsie to cook a breakfast. He turns nasty when she tells him to go home. Later, Bill's wife knocks on Elsie's door expecting to find him and Elsie there. He tells her it's a mate's house, and she smashes a mirror. Hilda later tells Elsie she heard noises coming from her house, and as Elsie is working in the cafe, it must be someone else. Elsie doesn't beleive her. She tells Bet that she's learned her lesson, and goes home to find the house vandalised.

Fred and Eunice decide on May 18 to be married, and fred wants Alf as his best man. Annie thinks £10 per week for Eunice to stay is fair.

Albert questions Ken on his and Deidre's trip, but Ken is giving nothing away.

Tuesday (2096, Monday 4 May 1981)
Fred and Eunice make wedding arrangements and buy the ring. The Tilsleys gain an unusual house-guest in Vera, who has been booted out by husband Jack.

Elsie is trying to clean up the mess. Every room has been trashed, clothes ripped, things broken. Len comes to tell her that Sedgwick is complaining about her not turning in again. Len asks the name of the man, but Elsie tells him it was a woman, Bill's wife. She'd left a message for Elsie. Bet wants Elsie to go to the police, but she refuses. She doesn't want anyone knowing about it.

Fred and Eunice go to buy a ring.

Ivy's workmate, Vera, tells Ivy that she's her alibi for tonight, and that she's really going out with her boyfriend Harry. She tells Ivy they are going to the Crown and Kettle pub, as Harry's friend has just took it over. Fred overhears and tells Ivy and Vera that she must ahve made a mistake, that pub is the one him and Eunice are going after. Vera tells Fred that the friend has already moved in at the weekend.

Ivy and Bet are going to bed, when Vera knocks on the door for a bed for the night. She's been kicked out by Jack. Ivy tells her there's no question of her living there, but she can stay the night on the settee.

Wednesday (2097, Wednesday 6 May 1981)
Ken tells Albert that he and Deirdre plan to be married.

Fred is upset at loosing the Crown and Kettle, he is getting married in a week. Annie tells them hime they ae quite welcome to stay there till they get things sorted out. Bet comments that Fred may be worried that Eunice won't marry him, if he doesn't have a pub. Eunice wonders are they doing the right thing in getting married, and that maybe they should wait till they have something more definite. Fred phones the Brewery to ask if something else will be available soon, and the tell him the Shipwright Arms. Fred later tells Eunice that another house is available, but doesn't name it. He tells her the wedding can go ahead.

Elsie can't get any insurance unless she reports the incident to the police. Annie overhears Len telling Bet, along with Hilda. Bet tells Annie she'll tell her all about it, but Hilda must not know. Rita comes to tell Len that Mavis had gone to the cafe, and Sedgwick has sacked Elsie. Len goes to tell Elsie, and she tells him this is the last straw. She phones Linda and ask if she can come for a visit.

Bert is upset at Vera stayinag another night on the settee and he wants her to ring Jack. Vera refuses saying that Jack should be the one crawling around to see her. Eddie says he will organise Fred's stag do as he knows some exotic dancers.

Ken tells Uncle Albert that he and Deidre are going to get married.

Thursday (2098, Monday 11 May 1981)
Vera continues to make her presence felt at the Tilsleys', and stands in for the stripper at Fred's stag night.

Friday (2099, Wednesday 13 May 1981)
Ivy's ploy to be rid of Vera backfires, and Eunice and Fred are married.

Eunice and her daughter go into the shop and enquire about the button holes. Eunice has heard about the stripper, and Fred taking her home. Fred's bed hasn't been slept in, and Bet, Betty and Annie are all worried. Eunice apprears at the Rovers, and Bet tries to put her off, but Fred appears through the back dooe at the last minute. He tell Eunice that he only went for a walk around the Red Rec, and the reason he escorted the stripper out of the Rovers was because he was thinking about their chances of a pub if the Brewery heard about it. Eunice seems to believe his story.

Bert is still annoyed that Vera is staying so Ivy phones Jack. She tells him that Vera is waiting for his first move, and that she's eating her heart out. Jack says he'll come round. They later find that Jack has left Vera's clothes outside.

The wedding party returns to the Rovers. Fred and Eddie have a few words, Fred blames Eddie for Eunice finding out about the stripper.

Albert and Ken are polishing the silver, Albert comments that when they all move in they'll all polish the spoons together. Ken tells Deidre that he's dropped enough hints that they will be getting a place of their own. Later Ken sits Albert down and tells him that Deirdre and he want a place of their own. Albert looks stricken.

Monday (2100, Monday 18 May 1981)
Ivy finds out that Vera has been entertaining her 'fancy-man' Harry at the Tilsleys' house and Bert has to make Jack promise to sort Vera out!

Vera offers rent to Ivy, but she refuses it. Vera asks for a bed in Brian's old room, but Ivy say's no. Harry rings to ask Vera out for lunch, the last date he had stood her up. Vera tells Ivy that she has a terrible headache, and Ivy tells her to go and lie down and she'll tell Baldwin.

Hilda spies a stranger in the street. She follows him, and sees the rendevous that him and Vera have made. Later, in the corner shop, Hilda repeats what she has seen to Ivy. Ivy races round home, but her key won't turn in the lock. Vera lets Harry out of the back door, and Ivy races in demanding to know what is going on. Vera covers herself by saying Ivy invited her to have a lie-down, and that she always locks the door when she's in a house on her own. Ivy looks stumped.

Ken tells Deirdre that Uncle Albert has a daughter and a brother, and that he is not a blood releative. Deirdre tells him that he's not very convincing.

Gail and Brian invite Susan and Colin over for drinks but the old record player won't work. Susan says Colin is a whizz at fixing things and tells Gail that he'll come over the next night to fix it.

Ivy makes Bert phone Jack Duckworth. They meet in the Rovers. Jack tells Bert he only wants her back on his terms, and he'll come round the next night to see her.

Gail's friend's husband Colin comes round for a spot of DIY and takes a shine to Gail...

Ivy interrupts gossip in the shop and turns on them. Hilda says she would stand up in court and swear what she saw. Ivy tells Vera about Jack going for a drink with Bert, and that Bert had said Jack didn't look very bothered. Ivy reminds her she has her own home, a washer and cooker, and plenty will be after Jack. Vera is going out on a date with Harry when Jack arrives. He tells her if she doesn't get home he will start divorce proceedings and have the locks changed. Vera later tells Ivy that she's going to divorce him. Ivy and Bert come in from the Rovers to find Vera packing, she's going back to Jack.

Beatty's daughter has invited herself round to see Albert.

Colin fixes the record player, and makes sheeps eyes at Gail.

Wednesday (2102, Monday 25 May 1981)
Colin Jackson, believing that Gail fancies him too, makes his move...Fred and Eunice return from their honeymoon.

It's a Bank Holiday and Gail and Brian are deciding whether to go out for the day. Brian doesn't have to be at work till that evening. Susan and Colin ask them to go on a picnic.

Annie is back from her holiday, and Bet is probing the domestic arrangements. Eunice makes lunch for Annie, who really doens't want to sit with them, but she accepts gracefully.

Beattie comes to see her father, who has gone out. She probes about Ken's forthcoming marriage, and Ken tells her that they won't be living there. When left in the room on her own, she rummages through the drawers. Beattie tells Ken that she can't have her father staying alone, that she hasn't been well, and that Albert always put a roof over his head.

Colin comes to Gail's later on when Brian is at work with the pretence of bringing a baby cup back. He makes a pass at Gail, who slaps him and sends him home.

Brian finds out that Colin Jackson propositioned Gail, but she makes him promise not to exact revenge.

Gail looks worried when Brian comments on how good the day out went. Later Susan comes round and ask whether they fancy a weekend in her mother's caravan. Gail say that Brian will be working. Brian comes home, and Susan repeats the offer to Brian. He says that he could ask for a night off, Brain wonders why Gail didn't want to go, and when Gail tells him Colin made a pass he wants to go and thump him. Susan tries again to make then come, but Brian tells her he can't get the time off. Susan storms off, saying they'll never get invited again. Brian takes Colin to one side and warns him off.

Friday (2104, Monday 1 June 1981)
Rita, feeling broody, suddenly stuns Len with the idea of adopting a child. Fred contacts the brewery to let them know he is now eligible to be a landlord.

Ken is trying to arrange a home help for Albert through Alf. Alf brings Albert some documentation, and Albert rips it all up. Albert tells Eddie that he'll be shortly fending for himself, and later Eddie asks for a word with Ken. Ken says he knows what he's going to say, and he's trying to sort it out. Ken tells Albert over a drink in the Rovers that he shouldn't have torn up the information, Albert walks out in the huff.

When Albert and Deirdre follow him later, they find him collapsed in the street.

Rita is in a strange mood, and finally tells Len that she wants to adopt a baby. Len tells her that's there's no way, and he's past all that.

Following Albert's collapse, Ken decides he and Deirdre must live with him once they are married.

Tuesday (2106, Monday 8 June 1981)
Len takes the initiative and contacts an adoption society on Rita's behalf. Eddie arranges a night out for himself and Stan.

Albert asks if Ken has told Deirdre yet about them going to live-in with him. Ken tells Albert that he suggested it, one minute before Deirdre did. Ken's had an idea about privacy. He wants Albert to have the downstairs front room as a bedsit, and Tracy can have his bedroom. Albert flatly says no, he isn't moving. He tells Ken there'll be nothing new unless it suits him. Ken ask about decorating the place.

Rita and Len are still talking of adopting. Len says they must discuss it. Rita says she wants a 2-3 year old that they can bring up as their own. Len says that when he thinks about it, the answer must be no. Len brings in holiday brochures, Rita says she doesn't want a holiday, she wants a child. Len tells her it's impossible, they are too old to adopt. By the time the child is 10, he will be 60! He finally relents and tells her to make an appointment.

Hilda is spring cleaning and doesn't have time to make lunches and dinner. Eddie is threatening to go and stay at Monkey's again. Stan and Eddie decide to have a night out, to see strippers, but they'll tell Hilda it's snooker at the legion.

Wednesday (2107, Wednesday 10 June 1981)
Len and Rita are told they are too old to adopt. Stan and Eddie go out for the night and fail to return.

Ken is still trying to convince Albert to change his mind. Eddie tells an astonished Deirdre that he wants to be consulted on the choice of curtains and wallpaper for the front room. Ken and Deidre set a date for their wedding, they hope it to be the last saturday in July.

Len and Rita go for an interview at the adoption agency. She tells them they are too old to adopt, but perfect for foster parents. Rita goes off very disappointed. Len tells her that if she wants to try again she can go on her own. He knew they were both too old to adopt. She tells him she doesn't feel too old, and she's not giving up.

Eddie and Stan go out spruced to the nines to what Hilda thinks is the Legion. She tells them she knows why they are going there, there's no women. Hilda falls asleep in from of the TV, and awakes at 02:25, there's no sign of Stan and Eddie.

Thursday (2108, Monday 15 June 1981)
Rita drops her adoption ambitions, until she decides to adopt a child about to be born to a local girl. Fred and Eunice visit the brewery to finalise their application

Hilda tells Stan she knows what time he came home. Stan says it was a snooker tournament, and it ran late. Ernie, the stewart at the Legion comes into the Rovers, and Stan warns him, if he sees his missus, to say it was snooker not strippers there last night. Hilda later overhears Mike and Bert talking about a barmaid at the Legion called Freda, and asks who she is. Ernie mistakenly later calls Hilda by the name Freda, and she smells a rat. When she confronts Stan and Eddie, they haven't a clue who she is talking about, as they were at another club, watching strippers.

It's interview time at the Brewery for Eunice and Fred, Annie tells them it will just be a formality. The interview goes well, and they are told N & R will be in touch. There is later some query about Eunice's maiden name being Nutall.

Rita still wants to try to adopt. Emily tells her she's heard of a poor 15 year old girl, who doesn't want her baby. Rita decides to go and see the family of Sandra Turnbull. Len is furious when she tells him.

Elsie is back from Linda's. Mrs Sedgwick is now working in the cafe.

Friday (2109, Wednesday 17 June 1981)
Hilda confronts the barmaid at the Legion in an attempt to discover what really happened on Stan's night out. Len and Rita agree to try and foster a child.

Hilda won't believe that Stan and Hilda didn't got to the British Legion. Hilda decides to go and find this Freda at the Legion, and asks Len to ask Freda to come out and meet her. Hilda asks Freda if Stan took her home till three in the morning. Freda says it could have been him, there are that many wanting to walk her home - but he doesn't sound familiar. She asks them all in for a late coffee, for being so kind as to walk her home.

Hilda listens in disbelief, and later tells Stan that she could hardly remeber what he looked like, and that's the kind of women she is. She decides to forgive him telling him there will be many a woman after him, him being upstanding and good looking. Eddie and Stan can't understand why Freda would say she was with him. Eddie has the idea of taking Freda to the Rovers, so she can say that she's never seen him before. They walk in, and Stan says to Hilda that the woman Eddie is with is a bit flash. Hilda realises Stan was never with her and is mad that she had been buttering him up.

A letter comes from the brewery and Fred looks disappointed. He later shows Eunice the letter - they've been turned down by the brewery.

Sandra's mam comes to see Rita, they've decided they couldn't let the baby go outside the family. They are very sorry, but they've decided they'll manange. Len agrees to foster.

Fred fails to find out why the brewery turned him down. A vicar refuses to marry Ken and Deirdre because they are divorced.

Annie is quering the letter from the Brewery. Eunice says she doesn't understand it. Mr Ridley is not available when Fred tries his number. Eunice thinks Mrs Walker has given them a bad reference. Fred goes to see Annie, and mentions the reference. Annie is very suprised, she says that the reference she gave would get him a job anywhere.

Mrs Pritchard comes to see Annie, about being a replacement cellarman when Fred leaves. They seem to get on very well. Fred finally contacts Mr Ridley and asks for an explanation, the phone is eventually put down on him. Fred tells Eunice he thinks Annie is hast taking on Pritchard. He's going in person to see Mr Ridley. Eunice tells Fred that Annie must be told. They tell Annie together that they have been refused a tenancy. Annie says she'll look into it.

Len tells Rita that the Social Services is coming to see them that afternoon, he's been down to see them. A man calls to see them to tell them all about fostering, and it's pitfalls, and to make sure that Rita and Len would make suitable foster parents.

Ken goes to see the vicar of St Mary's to ask for a church service, but is refused a marriage service but offered a church blessing. Ken tells him there are other churches in the parish.

Alma asks Bert if his daughter-in-law wants a job at the cafe. He tells her she has her hands full with the baby. Bert tells Elsie that Mrs Sedgwick was asking about staff, and that she's short staffed. Elsie goes to see her, and she tells her the hours have been changed, but there's a job there if she wants to try it.

Tuesday (2111, Wednesday 24 June 1981)
Elsie accepts a job back at Jim's cafe, but only as a waitress. Ken finds a minister to marry him and Deirdre.

Mrs Walker is to ring the Brewery. She tells Betty that Fred and Eunice have been turned down by N&R. She tries all day to get through but with no joy. She eventually get through to the brewery and they tell her that the problem lies with Eunice. Apparently she and another barmaid were dismissed some years ago for sticky fingers in the till.

She tells Betty that she can't tell Fred. Eunice is annoyed later when she asks Fred if Annie has rang the brewery. Annie asks Eunice to wait a while in her sitting room and tells her about the Floundering Arms. Eunice is shocked, she says she'd forgotton all about that, but denies the charge. She tells Annie they've lost everything through her. Annie tells her she'll have to tell Fred and there's no time like the present.

Rita is filling in forms for fostering, she reads out her reasons for wanting to foster to Emily, who thinks she's wrote from the heart.

Elsie goes into the cafe, and introduces herself to Mrs Sedgwick. She says Elsie can start, if she wants to, but it will be different for her not being a manageress. Elsie asks for a few days to think it over.

Ken has been to see the vicar, the wedding date is set for July 27.

Wednesday (2112, Monday 29 June 1981)
Eunice is forced to tell Fred the real reason they were rejected by the brewery, and Fred blows his top.

Eunice tells Fred why they were turned down at the brewery. Fred is furious, saying she was his his passport to a pub of his own, and that he could have married anyone. Eunice tells Fred that at the time, she wanted to go to the Police, but the Brewery sacked them instead. Fred says that the Breweery will have to change it's mind. Fred rings Mr Ridley, but Eunice says she doesn't want it all raked up again.

Elsie is working back at the cafe. It's very busy and Elsie is rushed off her feet. Alma need to go shopping and Gail helps out.

Alf is disappointed that Len is to be best man, but is overjoyed later when Deirdre asks him to give her away.

Annie has the decorators in to paint out a bedroom.

Thursday (2113, Wednesday 1 July 1981)
A bitter row erupts when Fred confronts Eunice with the Brewery's conviction that she is a thief. Elsie, angry at being exploited by Alma, walks out on the cafe job.

Eunice wants Fred to drop the idea of going to the Brewery, but he goes anyway without her knowing. He's late back, and Eunice ask him where he's been. He tells her that now he knows why, and he doesn't believe her story. Betty meanwhile tells Mrs Walker that she is stuck with Fred and Eunice, but Annie tells her this is not so. Mr Pritcahrd is coming to work for her. Later, Fred takes a phone call from Mr Pritchard and tells him that he is staying so there is no job to come too, and he should look elsewhere. He later tells Mrs Walker that Mr Pritchard rang, and what he told him. Annie is furious with him. She tells him that she intends to carry on with her arrangements, and that she wants them moved out after she returns from a weeks holday at Joan's.

Elsie and Alma are arguing in the cafe about the work load. Elsie wants her to employ someone else to give them a hand. She says she just makes a convenience of her. She is furious and tells Alma to stick her job, and walks out.

Friday (2114, Monday 6 July 1981)
Mavis befriends local painter, Maurice Dodds, and he asks her out. Ladder climbing is getting Stan down, until Eddie comes to his rescue.

Mavis and Emily are going to book a bus for a daytrip to London for Charles and Diana's wedding day. Betty Turpin is going too. Later, Deidre asks Emily to babysit when her and Ken are on honeymoon. Emily agres to, then remembers about the trip to London. She says Mavis will be OK, as Betty is going too.

Fred tells Eunice that Newton & Ridley have nothing against him, and that he may get a job a bottling plant or something similar. Later, Eunice walks into the Rovers, and watches Fred help himself to a scotch. She mentions it to Bet, who tells her the tale about Fred being suspended by Mr Lewis.

She later ask Fred about taking the scotch, who tries to brush it off. But Eunice blurts out that she knows about his suspension, and why hadn't he come clean after all she's been going through, and she hadn't pilfered the till, it was the other barmaid. Fred tell sher he's had enough of married life, but later apologises. Eunice says they'll be able to move into her own room. She later goes to see her father, but comes back and says he's not very keen on the idea. Eunice decides to have a night out, and is questioned by Fred.

Eddie is selling Mr Dodd's paintings for him, at £6 each. Mavis buys one and discusses art with him. He invites her to go painting with him.

Annie, again tells Fred and Eunice to get out of the Rovers but they, unable to find somewhere to live decide to dig their heels in and stay put.

Eunice points out another job at another brewery. Fred says he'll go and enquire, but comes back foaming as there were another 25 in front of him. Annie rings Bet to find out if Fred has got fixed up yet - she wants then out by the times she comes back. Bet tells Eunice and Fred what Annie has said. Fred says that they are staying and that he's done nothing to get the sack for.

Tuesday (2116, Monday 13 July 1981)
Factory girl Lynn Watts is about to leave, to go and be married and live in Australia. Maurice Dodds asks Mavis to pose - in the nude.

Annie is due back from Joan's today amd Eunice suggests to Fred that he picks her up from the station. Hilda tells them that if Mrs Walker says something, she means it. Fred says she can't force them out. Annie is picked up from the station and Fred remarks that she has never uttered a word on the journey back.

They decide to leave things for a while, but Annie asks them through to the sitting room. She tells them she thought she made it quite clear that they would be gone when she got back, she says she has been more than accommodating. Eunice retalitates by telling her that Fred has been helping here for 24 hours a day for years, and that they will stay till they find somewhere else. Annie later tells Betty that they are refusing to move out.

Rita's back from holiday and guesses that Mavis has a male friend. He comes to the Kabin and is introduced to Rita. Mavis asks for a half day off to go painting. Later Maurice and her are talking about art, and he says he likes drawing landscapes. Mavis asks if he's ever drawn a nude, and he says no, but if she's willing, she can pose for him.

Eunice argues with Annie, and quits the Rovers without Fred. Mavis starts to have doubts about posing for Dodds.

Mavis tells Rita that Maurice wants to paint her nude, Rita laughs it off and tells her she's mad and will never go through with it. Maurice comes to the Kabin later and ask her his place or mine. Rita tell Mavis that she's getting in too deep. He comes later to her flat, but she puts him off.

Annie is still upset over the Fred business, and confides in Betty that she has no one else to confide in. Betty remarks that Billy would be a help, and Annie says she will ring him. She's later on the phone to Billy, when Eunice walks though.

Annie later tells Fred that Billy has rang from Jersey and he's coming home, but there's a problem with the accommodation. Billy's room is being' decorated, and he can't be accepted to stay on the settee, so Fred and Eunice will have to move out. Eunice tells Fred that it's been a put up job, and that Annie rang Billy. Betty is going home with toothacahe, and they are short- staffed. Fred offers Eunice's services, but Annie says empahtiaclly 'no'. Eunice takes that as a slur on her and walks out, trying to take Fred with her. Fred refuses saying that it's his job.

There's a leaving do in the Rovers, one of the girls is going to Australia to live. Elsie asks Mike for the job. He tells her that Ivy will be in charge, but she can have the job if she wants it.

Thursday (2118, Monday 20 July 1981)
Fred realises he will have to make the first move to get back with Eunice after her walk-out, and they try to sort out the mess they've landed in.

Eunice hasn't come back, Annie asks Fred if he's made arrangements for tonight as Billy is coming back. Mike Baldwin tells Fred to leave her alone, she'll come around, or that will be the way for the rest of their lives. Betty says if he doesn't make a move soon, she'll think he doesn't care. Fred goes to see Eunice at her father's house. She tells him it has taken him long enough, but he tells her that phones work both ways.

He tells her they have to sort something out. or call it a day. He tells Eunice that as soon as Billy goes, Pritchard will be moving in. Eunice thinks if he doesn't live in, things will be better and that they can rent somewhere. He'll stay with Eunice at her old house.

Later Billy rings Annie to say he can't make it to Weatherfield, Annie is very upset.

Blanche and Susan arrive to the Street for Deirdre and Ken's wedding. Blanche is staying with Emily.

Rita tells Maurice that Mavis is on a half day, but that she was very disappointed that she wasn't able to help him out. He says to tell Mavis the next night will be fine..

Deirdre and Ken have their respective hen and stag parties.

Ken and Deidre decide to have a stag and a hen night. Blanche invites Mavis and Rita, but Mavis tells her she has a prior engagement. Maurice comes to tell Mavis 8pm. When they meet later Mavis tells him about sunday school, and he realises she doesn't want to pose for him. But asks her if they can still go sketching together.

Betty persuades Fred to polish up the Rover for it's outing to the wedding the next day. Fred is polishing the car, when Eunice stops by for a chat. She sits in the car, and Annie walks up the street. Eunice tells Fred to drive off, she doesn't want to get into trouble for sitting in the car. Later Annie tells Fred off for being away two hours, she tells him that another ten minutes and she would have called the Police.

Fred wants assurances from Mrs Walker that his job is safe, or he's leaving. She tells him that that is fair enough, but she wants him to work a weeks notice or his name will be blacked. Later, Fred tells Eunice he's not going back to the Rovers, but Eunice persuades him otherwise, for a good reference from Annie. Fred goes to work, and Bet tells him Annie asked her to post the letter to Mr Prichard for him to start work in the Rovers in a weeks time.

Eunice finally persuades Annie to let Fred keep his job but live elsewhere. Annie's plan to screen the Royal Wedding flounder when the set is damaged.

Mike gets Susan Barlow a job, in a wine bar in London, The flat goes with it. Annie offers Fred his job back, he says he'll think it over. Eunice goes to negotiate will Mrs. Walker. Fred won't be living in, and getting an extra £12.50 back for board and lodgings. It's Charles and Diana's wedding day. Emily has had a phone call, there'e a boy for Len and Rita to foster.

Len and Rita's foster child arrives and Elsie Tanner starts at the Factory Sewing room. Brian is pestered by a glamorous client at the garage.

Elsie clocks on for her first day as a factory girl. Ivy lays the ground rules. Mrs Fox , a friend of Ron Sykes, asks for Brian to come and check her car over. On a test drive, he's spotted by Vera and Elsie. John arrives at Len and Rita's. Len says he'll take him fishing.

Fred is moaning constantly about living in. Mrs Fox takes Brian on another test drive, with lunch included. Vera tells Ivy that Brian has a girlfriend, which Brian denies saying she's made a pass, but she's a friend of the boss.

Ken and Deirdre return from their honeymoon only to find that Mike has fixed Susan up with a job in London.

Brian goes again to see Mrs. Fox after a phone call. She offers him champagne and a hankerchief to wipe his mouth. Ginger goes to the Rovers, and Ivy asks Brian removes his overalls after work, and the hankerchief is still in his where Brian is. Ginger replies that he's out on a job, over his kunchbreak.

Ken and Deidre arrive back from Corfu.

Albert tells Ken that Mike got Susan a job in London. John meeets some friends from his school.

Elsie tries to distract Gail from her suspicions about Brian and Glenda Fox. Then Gail sees Glenda for the first time.

Gail finds the hankerchief but Brian tells her he doesn't know where it came from and that it must be one of hers, as it has a 'G' for Gail. Gail goes to see Elsie, and Elsie tells her she should trust Brian. So Gail goes to the garage , only to find Brian being dropped off at the garage by Glenda Fox. She turns away and doesn't let Brian know she's there.

Ken has a go at Mike in the Rovers about Susan's job in London. Mike tells Ken that he had no idea she hadn't OK'd it with Ken, and that now he has a guily complex about Susan, after dumping her at birth. Ken tries to persuede Susan to retur from London, but she refuses.

Albert meanwhile is feeling ignored locked away in his bedsit.

Tuesday (2126, Monday 17 August 1981)
Len and Rita find they will have to deal with the influence of Matt Stapleton on their foster son John.

Brian comes home for lunch and Gail tells him about the hankerchief and that he has to stop lying as she saw him with Glenda Fox. Brian storms out sating he doesn't like being spied on. Gail later goes to Ivy and Bert's to see if Brian is there, he hasn't been home for his dinner. Bert goes to the garage to find hin. He asks Brian what is goin on. Brian tells him the Glenda is a customer and friend of Ron's abd there's nothing going on. Bert tells him to think and that she's having a game with him, and that there will be a price to be paid.

It's Vera's 24th wedding anniversary and Jack has been made redundant. They go to the Rovers for their evening out, and Vera tells Hilda that Jack cannot wait to get another job.

Matt and Johnny stay for their tea at Rita and Len's. Johnny has had his ear pierced and len goes mad with him. he tells him that Matt is a bad influence.

Brian tells Ginger he's not going to see Glenda Fox again. A customer comers to the garage and asks for Brian. He tells him his wife likes them young and good looking and introduces hikself as Mr. Fox. He tells Brian a few home truths about Glenda and says her car will not need a service as she's gone away on holiday. He tells him he doesn't want him servicing the car, let the boss do it.

Wednesday (2127, Wednesday 19 August 1981)
Gail and Brian are reconciled and Vera and Jack celebrate their twentieth wedding anniversary.

Len invites Johnny to go into the yard with him, but he says no, and that he's going out with Matt. Matt calls to invite Johnny to a reggae disco, and they'll get in free as he knows the security. When Matt comes to call for Johnny later to go out, Len tells him he can't go . He tells them he asked him mother , and she said it was OK. Rita asks him if he told his mother that it didn't finish till midnight. He goes to bed. When Rita takes him a cup of tea later, his bed is empty. Rita tell Len that maybe they should have let him go.

Alec the van driver is leaving Baldwin's factory. Ivy rings Bert to tell him there's a job going. Mike has told her to ring the job centre, but she tells Bert she'll forget to do it, and at the last minute Mike will need a replacement, and Bert can step in. Bert tells her that he'll need a a Transport and General union card. She tells hime that there must be someone who can pull a few strings for him to get one after all the Trade union work he's done. She's mad at him, and says that Jack will be getting the job after only a fortnight out of work.

In the Rovers Bert asks Jack if he wants the job at Baldwin's. Jack says no and that he 's happy at being out of work. Jack tells Bert he'll second him for a Union card, and he's tells Ivy. Ivy wants Bert to go and ask for the job without the card, but Bert say's no, and that he'll do it through the proper channels.. She tries then to get him to go and see Balwin for a letter to take to the Union saying he has a job if he gets the Union cards. Vera overhears Bert and Jack talking, and doesn't want Jack to second Bert. Bert tell Jack that he doesn't want to cause any bother.

Thursday (2128, Monday 24 August 1981)
John Spencer comes home after a harrowing night for the Faircloughs and the trio talk out their conflicts.

Len and Rita wait up for Johnny coming home. Rita says they'll give him till 1pm then phone the Police. Len thinks if Johnny had had a thought for them he wouldn't have sneaked out. It's 01:30am and Jihnny is still not home. Rita wants Len to check Johnny's house, he may still have a key to get in. also to check the hospitals as he may have been in an accident. They hear a noise and catch Johnny sneaking back in to the house. Rita send him off to bed, as Len wants it out now.

Len tells Johnny that while he's under their roof he will do as he's told or else they will have to get in touch with the social workers. He tell Johnny to think about it, ands Rita warns Johnny that Len means it. They later find Johnny washing his swim wear, and hanging it out on the line. He apologises to Len and Rita and tells them he has been stupid.

Ivy wakes up with hangover, but says she'll stil go into work even if she has to crawl. She beats Vera into work , who is in unusually sharp as well. Vera tells Ivy that she is sneaky trying to collar Baldwin and giving preferential treatment. Vera later asks Baldwin for a quiet word and that she'll see him later.

Jack comes to see Bert. he wants to know if Vera has got him the job, and tells Bert that he will second him for a union card. vera finally gets to ask Baldwin, and ask if jack can have an interview. They arrange it for 3pm the next day. Vera smirks at ivy and tells her about the interview, Ivy tells her that that's Ok as he is seeing Bert at 2pm.

Elsie remarks to Hilda that there's a van drivers' job going.

Friday (2129, Wednesday 26 August 1981)
Vera, Ivy and Hilda get Bert, Jack and Stan to compete for the Factory van driver job, but behind all their backs, it goes to Ida Clough's son.

Stan is polishing his shoes. He tells Eddie that Hilda wants him to get a steady job, and that there's a van driver's one over at Baldwin's. Eddie thinks this is a good idea as a van will always come in useful. Stan tells him not to be daft, he's not going for the job.

Johhny is writing out a card for his mother. he tells her it's his mam's operation today, and asks if she thinks it will go OK. He tells her that if anything happens to his mam, his dad would have him, but his step mother doesn't like him. Rita tells him there will always be a home there for him. Rita phones the hospital about Mrs . Spencer. The operation was a success. Len says she will be out of hospital in 10 days.

Bert comes for his interview. He tells Mike he has a clean licence and his uniuon card will be there in a week. Jack is in the Rovers supping pints, the' staff cannot beleive that he is going for an interview, abd Betty offers him a peppermint but he refuses it. Jack nearly knocks Mike out with the smell of drink, But Vera insits Mike will get reliability if he takes him on. Stan appears at the door. He tells them it was Hilda' idea so Mike gives him an interview as well.

Later in the Rovers Vera tells Ivy that Jack and her are celebrating, Jack thinks the job is in the bag. Hilda comments that she doesn't know why they only think Jack and Bert are in the running.

Mike comes for a drink and they ask who has the job. He tells them on-one. Ida Clough's son Bernard has got it. They ask why it was him and not their partners .Mike explains if Berts had got the job there would have been a problem with rank pulling and holidays off together, and if Jack got the job, Vera would be doing half as much work as she does now. And Stan has never done Mike any harm!

Deirdre worries when Tracy goes down with chicken pox. Len and Rita take John out for his last day

Emily asks Alf if he is missing having Deirdre and Tracy living with him. She tells him she did, and that she's looking for some part-time work that is unpaid or maybe voluntary work.

Tracy has chickenpox and is kept off school . Albert tells the regulars in the Rovers that she has chickenpox and they tell him he wants to be careful as it's the same virus as shingles. He tells them he's not going back and will have to find somewhere to live. He goes to a friends house rather than back to Ken and Deirdre's. Later Hilda tells Emily about Tracy, and Emily goes round to the house. She say the same thing that Betty did, and Albert overhears her. Somehow Emily ends up having Albert to stay! Albert's goes to Emily's and rings ken to ask him to bring him some clothes, the list seems endless, and he tells Ken he intends to stay for some weeks.

Fred goes to see a house but tells Betty it's ready for demolition.

Len and Rita have a day out to a planetarium with Johnny and have such a good day they decide to go to the Lakes the next day. Len and Rita tells him they have a suprise for him, he says he has one too. His mother is coming out of hospital.

Tuesday (2131, Wednesday 2 September 1981)
Deirdre and Ken cope with Tracy's chicken pox, while Emily and the regulars cope with Albert

Johnny's mam is coming at 12pm to collect him. Rita is very upset at his going. Mrs. Spencers comes to collect him and Rita tells her that he has been no trouble. After she's keft with Johhny, Rita becomes very upset, saying that it's probably the only time that Johnny has had two square meals a day.

Emily ask Alf if there are any jobs at thecommunity centre for her. He tells her that there's the job of caretaker, and that she could move into the flat and rent her house out. Hilda overhears this and questions Alf about it. Hilda goes to Ken's house, and asks him about the vacancy in the flat and the job. Ken tells her her that it's not a full-time job, and he thinks that she would be wasting her time in applying. He doesn't think that it would suit her. After Hilda has left, Deirdre tells him that he didn't handle Hilda very well. Ken later sees Hilda in the Rovers and apologises for the way he handled himself, in that he may have said that she was unsuitable, and that if she wants the flat and job, she should go for it.

Eunice comes into the Rovers to see Fred, brandishing an electricity bill that they have to pay for her father's flat. Fred tells her there's no way he's paying that. He suggests they go to see Alf about his flat above the corner shop, after all Alf was their best man. Alf listens to their request, then tries to dissued them , saying that's its very small. He tells them about Emily maybe moving into the community centre and renting her house, and heaves a sigh of releif when they leave. Fred and Eunice go to see Emily, and ask if they can rent her house. She tells them that she hasn't made her mind up about going. They leave, and Albert tells Emily that they wouldn't get him out of his house to look after the centre, there's terrible vanderlism over there. He also comments that once she let Fred and Eunice rent her house, she would have an awful job getting rid of them.

Wednesday (2132, Monday 7 September 1981)
Fred and Eunice miss out on Emily's house so revert to trying to move into the shop flat

Emily goes to tell Ken that she's not interested in the job and flat. She tells him that people were trying to push her into a committment. She later finds Eunice peering through her window, Fred and Eunice have come to see her again. She tells them that she won't be moving. Eunice turns on Fred, and says it's one let down after another. Fred returns to see Alf, and blames Emily. He asks about the flat at the community centre, but Alf says that there's a problem, the flat goes with the job. Fred is badgering Alf about his flat, and he tells him he hasn't had time to think about it. Discussing it later with Ken, he suggests Fred Gee for the post of caretaker of the flat.

Newton and Ridley are holding a 'Mr. and Mrs. Contest' and Bet sets herself the task or organising. Alf rejects her offer to be compere, Bert and Ivy won't enter the competion nor Stan and Hilda, Rita and Len, or Ken, who says reputations will be ruined.

Mike tells Ivy that there's no chance of a raise, and it may come to a three- day week or layoffs, but not to say anything yet.

Bet recruits some couples for the Mr & Mrs contest. Fred and Eunice agree they would like the centre flat

Eunice tries to persuade Fred to go for the job at the Community Centre, she says. Eunice asks alf to let her see the centre, and he says he will ask Ken. When Alf asks him, Ken says that he seems to be pushing for Fred and Eunice, and is it because he doesn't want them in his flat.Fred and Eunice go to see the flat and they tell Alf that it's just what they want. Later. ken walks into the corner shop and finds Eunice kissing her thanks to Alf. Ken is annoyed with Alf and tells him that he may not have been as clever as he thinks. Fred tells Annie he's moving and she is not pleased.

Deidre tells Albert that he can come home, Tracy will be returning to school the next day. Albert tells her that there are germs still about. He says he will go the next day.

Bet is still try for entrants in to the 'Mr. and Mrs.' quiz without much sucess. Hilda tells her that she wouldn't trust Stan to get her name right. She finally relents and tells Stan, who says she's barmy. Hilda has a plan, that she'll buy a book of questions and answers and practice. She persueds Bert and Ivy to join in the contest, and Rita tells her if len can get a test question right, she's ll agree to enter. He gets the first one wrong, but the second one right.

Friday (2134, Monday 14 September 1981)
The Mr & Mrs contest takes place in the Rovers and ends in aggro for the Duckworths and the Ogdens

Hilda has an interview for a new cleaning job. It turns out to be Mike Baldwin, and they both agree it wouldn't work. Hilda asks him to sign her card to showoshe turned up for the interview. he asks her to make a pot of tea, and whiile she's at it, could she wash the pots and pans, he offers her the job.

Bert is bemoaning the fact to Ken that he still doesn't have a job, while Jack Duickworth has two. He's a barman and a taxi driver, but at the Mr and Mrs contest he's in asking Vera for some money.

A stranger comes into the shop asking about Bert Tilsley. Alf tells him he lives at No 5, and yes he does do a bit of work on the side. Hilda overhears the conversation and tells him that Bert has done work at the Barlows at No 1 too. after he's left, Alf remebers who the starnger is, Mr Elliott. The Mr and Mrs contest is in full swing and the winners are Mr.and Mrs. Brian Tilsley.

Eunice and Fred are told that they have to quit the Centre flat and job but Fred decides he's staying put.

Hilda drags Stan around a show-house - then decides they are going to buy a similar one and puts No13 up for sale.

Hilda wants an unwilling Stan to look through a show-house on a new estate. Fred tells Eunice he has no intention of leaving the Community Centre flat, and also tells Alf and Councillor Critchley that they will not be moving out. Hilda hints to a horrified Annie that Fred and Eunice may have to move back into the Rovers if they are thrown out of their flat. Ben Critchley offers Eunice and Fred a job living-in and running his pub, but Fred is not interested. Alf asks Deirdre to come back to the Corner shop part-time and she agrees after discussing with Ken. Mavis unwillingly agrees to a blind date with Bobby. Hilda is impressed with the show-house and wants to sell No13 so they can put down a deposit on a new home.

Thursday (2158, Monday 7 December 1981)
Hilda puts the Ogdens' house on the market and shows the first potential buyer around. Bet pretends to be Mavis and walks off with her blind date.

Ken offers to help Fred and Eunice find new accomodation but Fred refuses any help. He tells Eunice he is not interested in Critchley's offer, and will barricade himself inside the flat if necessary. Hilda asks Len what he thinks their house is worth - he estimates around £7,500. However, Stan is not keen on selling. Annie advises Mavis to be cautious regarding her blind date with Bobby Simpson. Mavis then tries to back out of the date, claiming she has a coldsore coming on. Critchley tells Eunice he wants her to work for him, with or without Fred, and shows her around his pub. She is impressed but Fred refuses to budge, and suspects that Critchley has designs on Eunice. Hilda wants Eddie to move to the new house with them, to help with the repayments. Bet turns up to the blind date with Bobby, pretending to be Mavis.

Friday (2159, Wednesday 9 December 1981)
Eunice leaves Fred to go and work at Councillor Critchley's hotel. The Ogdens fail to get a mortgage - but get a buyer for their house.

Annie Walker tells Hilda she can't see how the Ogdens can afford to pay off a new house. Bobby Simpson rings the Kabin and asks Rita to thank 'Mavis' for an enjoyable night. Eunice tries to reason with Fred, but he still refuses to consider Critchley's offer. Hilda lists Elsie's phone number as the contact in the newspaper advertisement for the sale of No13. Elsie is not pleased to discover this, but agrees to confirm an appointment for a Mrs Bell to inspect the house. Bet admits to Rita that she pretended to be Mavis, and went out with Bobby. Fred tells Critchley his decision to stay put is final.

Mr and Mrs Bell inspect No13, and tell Hilda they are very interested. Eddie tells Hilda he will still lodge with them at the new house, but won't be signing the mortgage. Bobby arrives at the Kabin and meets the real Mavis. He doesn't tell her about meeting the other 'Mavis', and agrees to meet her for a drink at The Rovers that night. The bank manager declines to give the Ogdens a mortgage, due to Stan's low income. Bobby meets Mavis at the Rovers and is taken aback to see Bet behind the bar. She asks him not to say anything to Mavis about their date. Eunice packs her bags and tells Fred she is leaving him to take up Critchley's offer.

Fred spends a tricky day trying to cover up the fact that Eunice has left home. The Ogdens tell the Bells that the house is not for sale - but the Bells make a higher offer and dangle a fat cheque before them. Mavis is disappointed when Bobby fails to phone.

Tuesday (2161, Wednesday 16 December 1981)
Hilda has to make a tough decision about the house. Fred pockets his pride and launches a campaign to get back Eunice.

Wednesday (2162, Monday 21 December 1981)
Ken believes that Tatlock is making life difficult for Deirdre and warns him to mend his ways. Fred makes a final attempt to win back Eunice.

Thursday (2163, Wednesday 23 December 1981)
Ken attacks Tatlock for putting pressure on Deirdre. Fred returns to the Rovers with mixed feelings, and Mavis learns the truth about her blind date with Bobby Simpson.

Fred tells Betty he is going to see Eunice to sort things out between them. Deirdre invites Emily to Christmas dinner at the Barlows'. A female customer comes into the Kabin asking for her fairy lights - Mavis has sold them, but says she will get her another set from the wholesalers later that day. Fred visits Eunice at work and asks her to come back to him. When she refuses, he causes a scene, and Eunice has to stop him from hitting Critchley. Mavis sees Bobby at the wholesalers, but he is cool towards her. Rita tells Mavis that Bet took her place on the blind date with Bobby, and Mavis is livid.

Annie tells Fred he can move back into the Rovers, and immediately has him running errands for her. Ken tells Uncle Albert not to take Deirdre for granted. Bet helps Fred pack and move out of the flat. Deirdre asks Alf to join them for Christmas dinner. She tells Ken she can cope with Uncle Albert. Mavis gets tipsy at the Rovers and accuses Bet of trying to make a fool of her. Emily shows Alf a letter she has received from Arnold's solicitors, asking her to pay them a visit.

Mike makes a movie on Sylvia Hicks. Annie's 'Happy Hour' collapses after the regulars defect to a rival pub. Emily learns that Arnold has left her £2,000. Frankie Baldwin turns up looking for Mike.

At Baldwin's, Elsie tells Ivy she needs time off to go on an errand, but she is really going to her hairdresser's. Annie Walker's plans for a Cocktail Hour are greeted with scepticism by Fred and Hilda, but Bet is prepared to give it a go. Stan likes the sound of Cocktail Hour - pints will be 10p cheaper. Alf drives Emily to her appointment with Arnold's solicitors. Vera, Ida and Ivy are livid when Elsie returns from her 'errand' with a new hairdo - she tells them Mike has asked her to join him and a client for dinner that night. Mike rings Sylvie and asks her to make up a foursome for the evening - she agrees.

Hilda eats Stan's tea when he stays at the Rovers for Cocktail Hour instead of coming home. Annie is pleased when trade is brisk. Mike introduces Elsie and Sylvie to Wilf Stockwell over drinks at his flat. Elsie and Wilf hit it off.

The Rovers regulars learn from another customer that the Laughing Donkey has started a 'Happy Hour'. As soon as Cocktail Hour ends, they all desert the Rovers for the Laughing Donkey - apart from Albert who has fallen asleep in the Snug. When Annie discovers all her customers have left, she tells Hilda that she will abandon Cocktail Hour, as it's "like feeding strawberries to pigs". Hilda can't help but agree.

Emily tells Alf that Arnold has left her £2000 in his will, but she doesn't want a penny of it. Stan, Eddie and Len return to the Rovers later in the evening, saying the Laughing Donkey's drinks are overpriced anyway. They are crestfallen when told that Annie has axed Cocktail Hour. Frankie Baldwin turns up unexpectedly at the Rovers, looking for Mike.

Tuesday (2166, Monday 4 January 1982)
In spite of Mike and Elsie's efforts, Frankie finds out that Sylvia was on a foursome with Mike and announces that he's hurt and jealous. Emily decides to make a gift of Arnold's inheritance.

Hilda finds a lipstick while cleaning Mike's bathroom, and is agog when he tells her Elsie was there the night before. Elsie tells Bet she had an enjoyable night - Bet asks her if Frankie found Mike. Emily discusses Arnold's bequest with Deirdre and Alf, and they encourage her to keep the money. Ida and Vera quiz Elsie about the double date. They try to find out who the other woman was, but Elsie won't tell them, even when they guess it was Sylvie. Fred is touchy when Ken asks him about Eunice. Frankie turns up at the factory but Mike isn't in. Vera starts to tell Frankie about Mike's date with Sylvie but Elsie manages to stop her. Later, Frankie finds Mike at home and asks if he has seen anything of Sylvie. Mike says he thinks he bumped into her at the pub one night, but doesn't mention the double date. Frankie asks for money to pay off some debts but Mike turns him down. Bet takes pity on Fred and cooks him dinner after closing time. Frankie rings Sylvie and asks her to pop around and have a drink with him at Mike's flat. She doesn't say anything about having been out with Mike. When she reaches the flat, Frankie is very short with her, and tells her he overheard someone talking about her date with Mike. She tries to reassure him there was nothing in it.

Emily offers to buy a trampoline for the Community Centre with Arnold's money. Wilf arrives at the factory to see Mike, but barely speaks to Elsie. He turns up at No11 that evening though, and asks her out to have a drink at the Rovers. Mrs Stockwell rings Mike's flat looking for Wilf. Mike senses trouble and later asks Elsie to stop seeing Wilf, as he doesn't want anything to jeopardise their business dealings. Elsie refuses, telling him she'll do as she likes.

Wednesday (2167, Wednesday 6 January 1982)
Elsie starts to make the running with Wilf Stockwell. Fred tries to organise a night out with Alf to take his mind off things. Emily continues to be generous with Arnold's bequest.

Mike is worried when Frankie stays out all night. Sylvie arrives and tells him Frankie said he was going back to London. Wilf rings Elsie and she invites him around. Ken tells Emily he will investigate prices of trampolines. Mike rings Frankie and assures him there is nothing between him and Sylvie. Elsie cooks Wilf a meal, and tells him Mike wants them to stop seeing each other. Wilf agrees it is none of Mike's business. Vera and Ida come around snooping but Elsie sends them away. Wilf tells Elsie he will ring her that evening. Fred suggests to Alf that they have a night out to meet some birds.

Emily gives Deirdre a cheque for £1200, for Ken to buy the trampoline. She tells Alf she would like to give the remaining £800 to endow a bed at the hospital in Ernest's name. Mike takes Sylvie to the Rovers for a farewell drink - she is catching a train to London. He gives her a cheque for £500 to pay off Frankie's debts. Elsie is concerned when Wilf fails to ring her as arranged. When Betty arrives for work at the Rovers, Fred tells her that her son Gordon has rung to say he will be visiting her the next day.

Thursday (2168, Monday 11 January 1982)
Gordon brings his fiancée home to meet mother. Bert is still trying to find work - then remembers he is due in court. Alec Hobson, the travelling electrician, appears in the Street.

Bert gets a letter offering him an interview for a warehouseman's job. Ivy is pleased but Bert is pessimistic about his chances of getting the job. Travelling electrician

Alec Hobson is looking for work in the neighbourhood. Annie Walker has a couple of jobs for him, and Rita asks him to fix her hairdryer. Bert returns despondent from his interview - the job had been filled before he even got there. Betty is overjoyed when Gordon arrives at the Rovers and announces his engagement. He introduces his fiancee Caroline, and Betty gets along well with her. Len tells Bert he has heard that Longshaw's Foundry is looking for fitters.

Later, a jubilant Bert arrives at the Rovers, having landed the job at the foundry. Gordon and Caroline drop Betty off to work at the Rovers, but aren't keen to stay for a drink. Ivy is thrilled with Bert's good news, but brings him back down to earth with a thud when he tells her he is due to start work on the 25th - she reminds him that is the day he is due in court to face dole fraud charges. Ivy tells him he will have to make up an excuse for not being able to start work that day.
