Sunday 2 April

Mothering Sunday in the UK so the house has been full today. For the first time the two eldest daughters cooked Sunday lunch and the I washed up (no change there then). Everyone went home in time for the slightly delayed episode of the Street sponsored tonight by Cadbury's Roses.

Written by: Martin Allen Directed by: Tony Prescott

Vik is hammering on Curly's door. Curly bemused opens up and Vik says that his car is preventing access to the shop and can he get it moved. Curly knows it was outside his house.

Gwen is waiting for her cooked breakfast at Jim's - odd that I would have expected them to be having a lie-in. Jim's kettle is playing up and he remarks it is a pity that Gwen has brought nothing with her. Gwen has got everything she wants with Jim.

Natalie having briefly sobered up apologises to Leanne for her outburst in the bar. The police are coming round later. Duggie is seeing to the funeral arrangements for Tony.

Gail brings in a card for Sarah Lou - a Mother's Day card, unsigned. Gail tears it up and tells SL not to get upset. Ignore it says Gail - easier said than done.

In the Rovers Vik is unhappy and confides in Steve on his wish to run a minicab business. There will be a nice unit on Victoria Street for that. Sadly Vik cannot get Nita to move on the house. Steve reckons all women have a weakness - Vik merely has to find Nita's.

On the other side of the bar in front of Natalie, Debs and Vinny, Leanne gives Janice her card for the day. Janice reads the words and the sentiment, not surprisingly disturbs Natalie who rushes out to the back followed by Debs.

Curly arrives and tells Vik (who is covering the shop?) to ask Vinny where the car was parked. Vinny confirms it was outside Curly's house and not outside the shop. There is some joking about car spotters. There is no explanation to the car moving. Perhaps Geena could use the spirits. Again Curly is being accused of drinking.

Natalie and Debs are over at the latter's house and Natalie is recalling that Tony never remember Mothering Sunday in recent years. Debs reassures Natalie that she and Tony would eventually have made up. The police arrive and have questioned the people responsible for Des's death. it turns out that they were in custody when Tony died - the pathologist has been able to date the death with sufficient accuracy (on a practical point is this really possible?). Vinny and Fred are discussing the situation. Fred recalls making life hard for Ashley when Maureen went - and yet he would not have missed Ashley.

Jim and Gwen arrive and buy Steve a drink. Steve wishes them well but will continue to make himself absent. Janice overhears and asks Gwen for the full details.

During the adverts we become aware that the new video on the streets is Star Wars 1.

The police want to know when Natalie last saw Tony. In the room where they are sitting. Natalie tries not to tell them about the row and the cheque for £4,000. Sadly they already know. It went into a building society account. She gave him his inheritance. The police want more information and threaten to take Natalie to the police station. After Debs interferes and reminds them of the burial tomorrow the police back off.

Curly is puzzling about his moving car. Fred says the handbrake is slipping with yobboes pushing it for fun. Fred recommends a clamp from Mr Fixit, that will wipe the smile off the yobs faces. Curly is later seen attaching a clamp to the car and Steve wanders past having a bit of a joke. Steve is half convinced that Curly is going out of his mind when he explains - after all there may be a serial car mover about.

Janice and Gwen are discussing her change of mind. Janice reckons there must be another reason for her move but Gwen is admitting to nothing.

Gail finds SL in her bedroom and apologises for the earlier scene. As Gail says looking after the baby is a full time job - but SL observes that Gail will be bringing it up - she will be going back to school. Gail decides that the time has come to put a few things right. Gail starts explaining the financial facts of life - they need the two incomes and Martin's promotion will help with a new baby in the family. SL should have noted Gary Mallett's struggle to make ends meet. The family are going to have to sit down and discuss how it is going to work and who is looking after the baby and when. This is the biggest upheaval in SL's life and whilst Gail can help it is down to her.

Curly updates Fred on the story so far on the moving car and Fred (at his usual high volume) starts talking about a woman who had to move and change her name. Changing the name was the only sure way of getting rid of an undesirable past. Gwen is earwigging this particular conversation from the corner where she is sitting with Jim and Janice. Jim suggests a celebration but Gwen suggests some spaghetti and an early night!

A portly Debs and Natalie go over the events again, the latter on brandy. Natalie sends Debs home saying she can manage on her own tonight.

At McDonalds Gwen decides to revert to Davis from Loveday - part of her making a change to her life. No commitment though. She has a deeply unhappy look on her face and sadly the title writers were not aware of the script content as she is still listed as Gwen Loveday on the closing titles. Disappointing that - often when there are weddings then the closing credits show the new status and I recall Alma's new surname getting similar treatment on her divorce not so long ago.

Reality is starting to bite at the Platts. This one could run and run (about 20 years from my experience!).

I think the police investigation into Tony's death is a little far fetched and very heavy handed. If our police really behave like this without any sympathy I would be somewhat surprised.

And Curly's moving car - is this comedy or intended to be something more serious (sadly the spoilers don't help either). Has Curly booked his Easter trip to France or has that been forgotten?

And just how much is Gwen going to cost Jim - far too much I warrant.

Anyway moved along nicely this evening without any great high drama.

Monday 3 April

Natalie looks through some photos of Tony as she prepares for his funeral. Vinny offers his support. Natalie spurns Betty's offer to prepare food, saying that no-one round there would have anything good to say about Tony anyway. Nick Horrocks, Tony's father, arrives, and he and Natalie are civil towards one another initially. Nick gets defensive when Natalie goes on about how Tony is no better than the scum who actually killed Des, since it was all Tony's fault, and who knows how many other young lives were ruined by the drugs which Tony had peddled to them? Nick and Natalie have a brandy together and agree not to fight with each other - though Nat warns him not to expect her to weep at the graveside.

Nita is determined she will not sell the house to finance Vik's latest idea. Later Vik asks Steve to move in as their lodger.

Sarah-Louise is feeling disillusioned with schoolwork, since she can't see how she will manage to go to school and look after a baby in the future. Gail says that the family will all pull together and they will cope somehow.

Mike comments to Curly about the clamp on his car. Curly explains he did it himself.

Gwen announces to the factory girls she will be known as Gwen Davies from now on. Linda is cross about the amount of defective goods the girls are making. Even though Underworld is selling them on the market and making money, it might delay the Coopers order.

Kevin speaks to Curly in the Rovers prior to the funeral. They discuss the strange case of Curly's moving car, and speculate on who might be responsible. Curly suspects that Collette has something to do with it.

The funeral cars depart from the Rovers. Not before everyone has told Natalie they are 'there' for her. Maxine is at the funeral, and so is DI Reynolds. At the last minute a taxi appears, and out gets Colin Barnes.

Break

Buy a car; buy a burger; dye your hair; buy savoury biscuits; put your money in a savings account; eat sauce on your pasta.

At the graveside, Natalie speaks with Colin. He had seen the story in the paper; he sympathises with her - it must have been a nightmare. They urge each other to take care and Natalie starts to walk away. Kevin strides up to Colin and demands to know why he has come, after the fuss at Des's funeral. Colin replies that he wanted to see the job finished. Nick overhears and asks Colin 'What's it to you?' Nat intervenes to try to calm matters, and tells Colin who Nick is. Meanwhile, Vinny and Duggie have lined themselves up as backup while Nick demands that Colin show his son some respect. DI Reynolds observes the developing situation from a short distance. Colin angrily suggests that everyone is better off with Tony dead. At this, Nick lunges for Colin, only to be dragged off by Duggie. Vinny escorts Colin away.

Bobbi blames her machine for the fact she is producing so many seconds. Linda has a real go at her, and when Janice tries to intervene and asks Linda who the hell she thinks she is, Linda promptly replies 'Your boss!'

Gail and SL have another chat. Gail reassures SL that there are mother-and-baby units for girls in her situation. SL does not relish being treated like a freak, but Gail insists they have to look at all the options. Gail lets slip she had a pregnancy scare herself a few months ago. Of course it is a scary time, but SL will have all the family around to help. SL cheers up a bit and gives her mum a big smile.

Curly is so fed up with all the comments he announces to the whole pub that he clamped his own car and will continue so to do until the joker who has been moving it around packs up. He tells Kevin he will go to see Collette and tackle her about it. Before long, however, she turns up at the pub with an enormous bunch of flowers which she assumes Curly has sent to her. She tells him to pack it in. He shouts that he didn't send them and has no idea who did. Also, has she been moving his car around? She denies it, and they both realise that there is some other nutcase out there.....

Janice and the girls have a council of war about Linda. They decide that they will not be treated that way by Miss Whiplash and that Mike must be persuaded to make her back off. Nita is most unimpressed to find Steve with his bags packed all ready to move in with her and Vikram.

At Debs' house, Nick, Nat, Dug, Deb and Vinny discuss the day's events. They can't understand why Colin turned up to cause trouble, but hope that now the whole thing will be allowed to rest. Duggie helpfully reminds Natalie that there will be a trial to go through at some point. She sighs that it is not a nice thing to look forward to, on her own. Vinny summoned up an expression which conveyed so much that I struggle to express it in words. It basically showed he realised how Natalie really saw their relationship.

Wednesday 5 April

A welcome return for the Jack and Vera show tonight.

In the back room, Vinnie is on his way to work. Natalie is going to the police station to give a statement. Neither of them slept well. Vinnie was thinking over something Debs had said, that Nat was on her own. But didn't she know that he was there for her? Natalie said she just needed some time on her own.

At the B&B, Vera is complaining about a commercial traveller who had a lot of disgusting magazines hidden is his room. Well, I call them magazines, not that they had many words. Jack perks up. Would she like him to throw them out for her (oh yes?). But too late, Vera's done it. She didn't want Tyrone finding them. She still hasn't got over Mr. Hammond's inflatable floozy flying at her out of the wardrobe. Tyrone enters, his test is on Friday. He starts pretending to be in a Ferrari. Jack warns him that the examiners aren't looking for boy racers.

At the factory, Linda takes one look at something Bobbi's done and sacks her. Janice says that's it and storms off to Mike's office.

Nita arrives at the shop. She asks Vikram how long Steve will be staying. She doesn't like him ogling her. Doesn't Vik know what it was like between them. Vik tries to get more details from her, but she only concedes that Steve fancied her. She wants him out.

The DI finishes reading Natalie's statement at the police station. She asks him why he was at the funeral. Just to see what he could pick up. They'll be in touch. Bit of a pointless scene really.

Janice is laying down the law to Mike. They're not going to be bossed around by some jumped-up tart. You'll do what you're paid to do, shouts back Mike. Janice says Linda is throwing her weight around. Linda appears at the office door and Mike packs her off to Leeds. Then he tells Janice to get back to her machine and he'll sort it out.

Duggie and Debs are in the Rovers. Natalie hasn't moved from the back since she returned from the police station. Duggie suggests they invite her somewhere. Debs was going to have him round for dinner, why doesn't she ask Nat too? Vinnie is at the bar and says this isn't a good idea (bearing in mind what Nat was saying to him this morning).

Steve and Nita are also in the Rovers. He asks what time she has her bath in the morning so he can be sure to avoid her (!).

Nat turns down the dinner suggestion. Duggie says that he shut everyone out when Laura died. But then when he was ready to accept people again, they'd all moved on. Especially Tom. Perhaps he wouldn't have lost him if he'd opened up more. She should let people share her grief. Natalie agrees. When Vinnie finds out, he looks disgruntled.

No-one is working at the factory. Mike shouts that they'll have to work through their breaks to make it up. Janice tells him he's not listening to them. Yes I am, and all I hear is jealous rubbish. Hayley explains that they don't have a problem with Linda's promotion, it's the way she's behaving. A jumped-up Hitleress, says Janice. A tendency to overstep the mark, tempers Hayley. Janice says they're withdrawing their labour and everyone walks out. Deirdre has stood by like a lemon throughout.

Interval

In the street outside the factory, Mike says they've got 2 minutes to get back to work. Mark arrives. The workers go to the Rovers.

At the café, Tyrone is eating chips and tells Vera they're not as good as hers. You don't get that hot burst of fat when you bite into them. Vera says he can have an extra portion tonight.

At the bar, Bobbi offers to resign. Gwen encourages her and is worried that they'll end up in the dole queue. Janice says it's a point of principle and isn't to do with Bobbi, it's about that jumped-up trollop (3rd jumped-up). Gwen asks for her £50 again. Hayley wants to get some agreement in the group. They should agree what they want, they put it to Baldwin. If they can show him it's in his interest, he'll listen to them. They agree that Janice and Hayley will speak to him.

Vinnie is glaring at Natalie. He can't work out what she wants. First she says she wants some space and now she's going out to dinner. Trying to keep the peace, Natalie invites him along.

Back at the factory, Mike is pacing in his office. He can't back down once he's made a decision. Mark says he needs to compromise. Enter Hayley and Janice. What do you want, bawls Mike. Mark counters with, Please come in, we want to hear your grievances. Hayley, in a superb bit of negotiating, says that the lines of communication are ambiguous. That's rich coming from you, scoffs Mike. Hayley continues. They need some clarity. Right now, they're taking orders from 4 people, one of whom is new to management and doesn't have good people skills. Mike should make it clear that Linda's role is Sales and not Personnel. Mike says he'll think about it. Mark says they don't' have a choice and will they please come back now. Hayley quotes a work regulation that they should not suffer any loss of pay or other reprisals for their legitimate strike.

At the B&B, tea is ready and Tyrone shows off the clothes he's chosen for his test. Jack offers his tie. This will demonstrate that Tyrone is an upstanding member of the community and is only learning to drive so he can take his doddering granny to the seaside on Sundays. If Vera goes along, that will complete the package.

Candice is learning her lines in the café and would rather be stage manager. Hayley overhears. She loves Grease, but they had to do Macbeth at school. Sarah Lou asks if Candice will still be her friend if she has to go to a special unit. Of course she replies, but not too convincingly.

The meal is nearly over at Debs house. Duggie says he may have another job coming up if Vinnie is interested. They have another dig they're both right and thanks them and then packs them off to do the dishes.

In the pub, Gwen tries to back-pedal for her earlier behaviour and says she was worried about losing her job. Hayley enters and gets a double pineapple juice for her good work. The girls celebrate while Mike scowls at them. In another booth, Nita leaves, she can't take Steve staring at her any more. He suggests a card school to Vik. Linda arrives and Mike tells her what happened. She hopes he didn't undermine her authority, but Mike makes it clear she didn't have any, and that from now on she has nothing to do with the workforce.

Friday 7 April
Sunday 9 April

It has been a sunny few days so my wife thought we would go to the seaside today. When we awoke we found a grey sky and a wind blowing so decided not to go. But then we have had a busy week one way and another. Similarly it is a busy old time in Weatherfield - new sets coming on line and clear evidence that ITV are putting some investment into the soap to take it into the new millennium with even more strength.

So ... Sponsored by Cadburys Time Out Chunky Written by Julie Geary Directed by David Kester

Martin is home from his course and is sorting out his notes and files before going to work to prepare for his first day tomorrow. Gail remonstrates with him saying the children have missed him. To make up she promises a family dinner for when he comes in. She is glad he is back.

Natalie is getting nothing from the police and starts shouting at Vinny over the lack of police progress. Debs tries to calm her down.

SL is responsible for the costumes and Hayley offers to help. SL does not know where to start but Hayley gives her a pep talk saying that when the show opens she will know that every item of clothing is hers and every stitch is hers and she will get a thrill from that.

Pat, Steve and Duggie are outside the completed development - late and over budget but complete none the less. Duggie is expecting to be asked to develop a new health centre and is willing to put the work to Pat and Steve. Steve tries to hand Duggie an invoice but he refuses to take it as he has not been paid yet. Duggie dashes off to greet Sally and Danny and gets them to sign on the line for their shop unit. Duggie wishes them well and departs. They survey the new shop unit and now they have a couple of busy weeks getting it fitted out and then they can open. In the meantime Danny decides to christen the shop in a unique fashion as he grabs Sal and starts kissing her and then moves to ravishing her on the counter (odd that putting a counter in by the builder - normally it would be left as empty shell to be fitted by the tenant).

Dev is invited to Vik's party - but he refuses and Vik says just as well as he will not be able to open up the next day. Nita arrives to complain about the dirty washing up in the sink and to remind Vik that nothing of hers should get broken at the party.

Martin arrives at Weatherfield General and is immediately waylaid by Rebecca who recalls that they managed to spend a night together whilst he was on his course (they woke up together). Martin is desperate to get to his new desk and gives her a kiss before dashing off - he has treated both women equally badly this morning.

Pat and Steve arrive in the Rovers to celebrate a good job well done. Pat points out that he still has all the final accounts to do, settle the VAT and pay off the staff. Steve decides they can only afford a half!! Around the other side of the bar Curly is complaining to Kev about the exploits of his car. Curly does not know what to do next. In a booth Natalie and Debs are talking - Natalie does not know what is going on and she has another go at Vinny when he comes over, she storms out.

Curly leaves the Rovers and see the policeman he met on Friday (DC Cavanagh) crawling around his car. He spotted some acting suspiciously. The policeman accepts that someone is trying to set him up.

Buy a Rover; buy a cream cracker; BT Cellnet; Sky Digital; convert to being blonde (and watch your intelligence drop 50 points).

The policeman and Curly look through the house - nothing touched. However the friendly policeman sends Curly to look upstairs and he finds a spare set of keys downstairs which he pockets. The policeman says there is no evidence of any entry and he suggests it is merely children playing a prank. However he refuses to remove the points from Curly's licence. Curly admits that he thought he was going mad.

Sally and Danny wander into the Rovers and she says she cannot believe what they have just done in the shop. Well as Danny points out they are the tenants. He orders a bottle of champagne -the real thing - they have to celebrate. Moving from the market is going to be a good thing and no more early mornings.

Hayley and Roy are sitting in a booth. Hayley is going to help SL and Roy is worried about the extra load she is taking on - especially with her new title at work on Monday. Roy likens her to a tightrope walker - exciting but dangerous. Management is a balancing act and work is a circus, so Hayley points out that Mr Baldwin is a lion tamer.

Vinny goes into the back room at the Rovers and receives an apology from Natalie. He wants to help - Debs can, Duggie can - he just gets it wrong. The police are making enquiries - there is no news. The two of them soon raise their voices to each other again as Vinny reckons she is becoming obsessed - she has to let go of Tony and Des.

Dev and Nita are having a drink and he talks her into seeing sense. She will agree to sell the house because the bickering is not worthwhile. However, they agree not to tell Vik just yet as Nita wants to achieve her revenge.

Martin finds Rebecca changing as she ends her shift. Found time in his busy schedule. She invites him back to relieve his stress. He remembers he has to go home for a family meal with the kids. She is not taken by his excuse and departs. He arrives home to Moroccan Lamb casserole - he calls the children but they are at Address's. Gail and Martin bicker. He decides he does not want dinner or just Gail and he goes to bed tired and insists on going by himself.

DI Reynolds investigating Tony's murder arrives in the Rovers. He has to tell Natalie that they have arrested Colin Barnes to assist with their enquiries. We close with Natalie.

Sadly we have a bent policeman in the Street - why sad - because although our force may not be perfect I think it does little for their reputation to have a storyline built around one of them misbehaving (for whatever reason).

The new shop set was bedded in well this evening. I assume we shall be seeing a lot more of it, I just hope Sally will eventually get a decent haircut!!

No Norris (thought I would throw that one for old times sake).

Can Vinny and Natalie last much longer? No I thought not.

And I assume that Nita will soon be on her way. I had hoped that she would amount to more than we have seen - no doubt the actress herself will move on to bigger and better things!

See you all soon! - K Richard Whitbread

Monday 10 April

Vinny quizzes Leanne about Colin Barnes. Natalie emerges from the kitchen and tells them to shut up. Natalie is looking like a woman very close to the edge here.

Curly is dismayed to discover that during the night someone has been inside his house and trashed his living room - even putting his dustbin on the table.

Les starts a new job in the park, supervised by a large Scot called Neville Rose. Les seems to think he will get on all right. Neville succeeds in getting Les to believe that there is a crocodile in the boating lake. Apparently someone had it as a pet and let it loose in there years ago.

Gail wishes Martin good luck as he begins his new job. He warns her he may be late home. Gail sulks because she has arranged to go for a drink with Sally and Danny. Curly tells Gail about his bad experience at home. He is certainly shaken by the mysterious goings-on. There was no sign of forced entry and nothing was missing, he explains.

At the factory, Mark tells Hayley that as supervisor it is her responsibility to decrease the amount of poor quality goods the girls are producing. She asks if she will be paid extra for the position. Mark anticipates what his father would say to that - Hayley will have to prove she is worth it.

Maxine was happily munching a bacon sandwich in the cafe, until she got into conversation with Toyah about cruelty to animals in meat production. Later, Maxine sought Leanne's views on vegetarianism, to which Leanne replied that there was more to it than that. She then came out with some utter garbage about animal experimentation which I cannot bring myself to repeat. (Meaning, I get fed up with 30 year-old myths peddled as fact.) Suffice to say, Maxine believes the last thing she has been told, and has gone away to think about this.

Vik and Steve are looking forward to their party - and are shocked to find that Nita is looking forward to it too. They try to tell her she is not invited, but she reminds them that she lives there - they have no choice but to include her.

Martin settles into his new office and tells Rebecca that he has arranged for them to work on the same shifts. They kiss in the office, and arrange that he will go to her room after work.

Everyone (Debs in particular) surprised when Colin walks into the pub and tells Natalie that he needs to talk to her. In private.

Break

Drink cream liqueur; use moisturiser; don't forget 'feminine hygiene'; buy furniture; eat biscuits (in a selfish and devious manner without sharing them with your spouse).

Debs obviously thinks Colin did kill Tony, but at Natalie's request leaves them to talk. Colin tells Natalie that the police at first thought he had done it, since it was well known that he blamed Tony for Des's death. He tells Natalie that the police now know for certain when Tony was killed: February 4th, 1999. He was seen in a club at 2am, but did not arrive as expected at 9am. The police were therefore asking Colin where he had been on that night. He could not remember at first, and a police car was sent to Hartlepool to fetch his diary. Inside it, Colin found his alibi. He was in Weatherfield at the time, but in bed with Natalie. She gulps in disbelief as she takes this in.

Meanwhile, in the park, Neville leaves Les in charge of watering a flower bed. Les sees Tyrone and Monica decides to have a bit of fun with the hosepipe. Tyrone is soaked, and furious. Later, he tells Jack that he is going to get Les back and teach him a lesson. Jack warns him not to overreact.

Curly receives a visit from Sgt. Emma Taylor after he reported the previous night's events. She is interested to hear that Simon Cavanagh is already aware of the stalking. Curly prepares to tell her the entire story.

Colin assures Natalie that he had no choice but to tell the police about them. She is sure Reynolds will think her a slut and will make her feel terrible when he comes to confirm Colin's story. Vinny enters, but Colin leaves before he can cause a scene. Vinny can see that Natalie is very upset and he blames Colin. Natalie insists that Colin didn't kill Tony and when Vinny wonders how she can be so sure, she reveals that they were in bed together at the time.

At the factory, Mark praises Hayley for the standard of today's output and says she deserves a bonus.

Debs and Leanne are aware that Vinny and Natalie are having a row in the back, but neither wants to go and disturb them. They eventually decide that Leanne should go. Nita puts Vik out of his misery by agreeing to sell the house and split the money.

Rebecca has been waiting for Martin, and eventually he gets there. He was held up in a meeting. Just as they begin to kiss, his mobile rings - it's Gail. He has to go home, and Rebecca makes it very obvious she is not amused.

Vinny and Natalie are both upset and yelling at each other. He can't understand how she could do it; she screams that her and Colin were both grieving and comforted each other. Leanne gets to the door, but stops and does not go in. Instead, she puts her ear to the door to listen. Vinny wonders how many of the regulars are laughing at him because Natalie has slept with them as well. Natalie gives him a good slap across the face, telling him that was a lousy thing to say. Vinny counters that bedding Des's brother was a lousy thing to do. That certainly gave Leanne food for thought.

Wednesday 12 April

We open in the shop. Vikram is buttering up Dev, asking about the state of his empire and saying how much he admires him. What does he want? Well, until Vik sells the house, he doesn't have the money for his minicab business, and his mind won't be on the job, so it's in Dev's interest to lend him the money, £7500. Dev offers an alterntive, maybe he should leave now?

Was that the first time you'd slept with your husband's brother? DI Reynolds is interrogating Natalie at the police station. How did you feel that Tony caused Des's death? Perhaps you hated Tony? Natalie says that the men who killed Des are behind bars. She recognises that they want to pin the murder on Colin, but as she is his alibi, they have to show that she was involved. Does the DI have children? He'll know that sometimes they drive you mad, you even hate them at times, but you'd still never hurt them. She can confirm the date she was with Colin as it was after the court case. Sobbing, she explains how Colin and her felt at that time. It made it very understandable that they wanted to comfort each other. Max is in the café and asks Toyah if she doesn't miss meat. Toyah thinks that everyone who eats meat should be forced to go to an abattoir and kill the animal themselves. Does Max still want her tea and toast? At another table, Les is looking forward to his last day on community service. They'll have a celebration tonight: a pint, a curry, and Janice.

At the hospital, Martin calls Rebecca into his office to apologise for the other night and promises to make it up to her tonight, as he's changed her shift. Rebecca says he'll get into trouble, not just that people will notice about them, but that's he's abusing his position. (As these two are so indiscreet, whispering in corners and kissing in open spaces, surely someone has noticed by now?) But yes, she will see him tonight. Both seemed ill-at-ease with each other in this scene.

Natalie is back at the Rovers and looks exhausted. Vinnie wants to talk. She tells that she's just had to justify herself to the police to prove she didn't kill her son. She doesn't have to do it to him. They both have a history. Janice overhears this and asks Leanne what's going on. She tells her (!). Talk about keeping it in the family, says Janice. She immediately tells Vera. Then Audrey comes in for a drink to steady herself for an afternoon of Maxine gong on about killing animals. Vera - well there's one cow in here needs sorting out, that Natalie.

In the park, Neville is saying how nice it will be for Les to come back in the summer and see all the work he's done. He wants to get off early, so Les offers to do the last job of the day, tie all the boats up. Look out for the crocodile, reminds Neville.

The policewoman arrives at Curly's house during lunch. She's here unofficially as she thinks his stalker could be a police officer. But the only one I've spoken to is that nice DC Cavanagh, says Curly.

Leanne tries to stem the gossip and says it's nothing to do with them. But Vera thinks it is, as she was close to Des. He was wonderful to their Tommy and Natalie double-crossed them over the pub. Natalie overhears and asks if Vera has a problem. You stand there as the grieving widow but it's crocodile tears. Natalie says Vera wouldn't understand as she has a small mind and a big mouth. The day people like her do understand she'll feel ashamed of herself. She goes into the back and cries.

Interval

The policewoman explains to Curly that there have been incidents in the past that they thought had been made up. Would Curly tell his story again from the top?

That's a strange way to grieve, says Fred, who's just heard about the merry widow from Audrey. Leanne tries to shut them up again. Natalie questions her about how everyone found out, was it from Vinnie?

Les is singing on a boat on the pond, I'm coming home I've done my time (Tie a Yellow Ribbon). He sees a couple of lads on the island with a fire and tries to see them off. Tyrone is watching.

Dev is in the Rovers and offers to give Vik the money, provided they draw up a proper schedule of repayments and he gets the house as collateral. Steve doesn't seem to have his share, so Dev says to keep him informed, he may join the venture.

Back at the park, the two lads are escaping in a boat as Les arrives at the island. He tries to chase them and falls in the water, to see a crocodile-shaped log approaching him. He starts shouting and attacking it with a rose branch as the lads look on bemused. Meanwhile, Tyrone is taking Les's boat away, as he thrashes his way back to the safety of the island.

Meanwhile, Janice is all dressed up and waiting for him at the Rovers. Maybe something's happened to him, suggests Leanne. He's in a park, what could happen there?

Steve wonders how serious Dev is. Vik suggests he get the cash together soon. But they must be onto a good idea or Dev wouldn't want in. Colette and Curly are also in the Rovers discussing the latest developments. Colette had met the copper when she reported her purse was missing, but he'd never seemed interested and hadn't asked her out for example.

Janice is just on her way home when Vinnie arrives, answering Natalie's summons. She accuses him of blabbing. It wasn't him, it would make him look tacky. If you have anything to say, say it to me, says Natalie. That's easy, I have nothing to say to you, and Vinnie walks out. Leanne looks troubled.

Rebecca is waiting miserably in her room, nursing a glass of wine (white). But no, the camera pulls back and Martin is there after all. Why is she being like this? She can't face the next few months. Martin suggests she just concentrate on the next couple of hours, that's all he can give her. He asks her to be patient, he's not lied, he hasn't made promises that he won't keep. (I'm not convinced about that one). She says he's trying to do his best: at his job, to his wife, his children and her. She's decided to go away. She's got another job in Dubai for 6 months. When she comes back, the baby will be born, he'll have settled in his job and can decide what he wants. Martin start to shout. He knows what he wants, don't do this to me. Rebecca replies that if he loves her, he'll be waiting and they can do what they want together.

Les is stuck on the island in the park as Tyrone nicked his boat. We see him sniggering as Les calls out mournfully. Help, I'm stuck, I can't swim and there's a crocodile in the lake!

Friday 14 April
Sunday 16 April

A late start to the tape so the credits are missing - however as usual thanks to ITV for continuing to provide our entertainment! And they own the copyright too!

Maxine is not only turning Ashley vegetarian but also Bella the cat. Ashley is not a pot plant - he needs his sausage for breakfast. Ashley points out that the cat has to eat meat. Later Ashley is leaving for work and Max tells him to have a good wash before she comes home. Max lets slip in front of Toyah that Bella is going veggie. Toyah points out that Bella needs meat (as Ashley points out just like him). Max merely says they are both animals and can manage without meat.

Gwen and Jim have had a good cooked breakfast - he needs the preservatives that they add to food. Gwen points out that the house is well worn, not shabby mind you. The table, settee the chairs have all seen better days. Jim is not impressed. Later in the corner shop Gwen draws attention to the fact that it still feels like Liz's house and she wants to change the curtains, the decoration, the furniture so it is hers. Jim carries on shopping and thinking.

Sally is cleaning windows in front of Danny. What are they going to call it? Nuts 'R Us? D&S Hardware is the chosen name. They kiss again (they seem to enjoy this just a bit much if you ask me).

Steve wanders into the shop where Vik tells him that a buyer is coming to see the house. Dev rubbishes the story from the con-man estate agent. Vik tells Steve to get on with producing his share of the capital. As Steve leaves the shop he walks into Jez who is doing his bad penny impression. Jez asks what he is doing - moving into minicabs says Steve. Jez then enters the shop and overhears Vik complaining to Dev that Steve is slow in coming forward with the cash. Steve is playing for time and Vik wants to get the minicabs moving. He stores the information for later in the day.

Curly is unclamping his car when Colette arrives, hoping for a discussion. Sadly it is Saturday and Freshco expects managers to work. They agree to meet at 8pm in the Rovers to talk about the policeman.

At the hospital Rebecca has finished her shift and is tired. Martin wants to talk. Rebecca does not - she hands Martin her resignation - after all he is her boss.

In the Rovers Natalie asks Duggie to arrange 200 hundred posters offering £10,000 for news on Tony's death. Fred and Vinny enter. Betty serves Fred whilst Natalie talks to Vinny. She asks him through to the back but he is only returning a book to Geena and he leaves again immediately. Max asks for the menu and is offered hotpot. What is the vegetarian option? But ... but she's married to a butcher. Fred reckons that a butcher's wife going veggie is equivalent to adultery. Max tells him to leave off. Betty produces the veggie menu - smoky bacon crisps, Max asks for a cheese sandwich!

Steve catches Duggie in a booth - any chance of the council coughing up for the work. Not at present - sometimes in the next two weeks. Steve wants the money to re-invest.

Leanne approaches Natalie and admits that it was not Vinny who let slip about sleeping with Colin. Natalie gives her short shrift and storms out. Leanne turns around and Jez greets her with "Seems you are having a bad day".

Parker pens (spending a lot of money at present) British Gas (cutting prices - indeed they could cut them more if they made less silly ads) Wickes, Birds Eye peas, Ikea (with a very sick advert - I never want to shop there) McDonalds.

Sponsors - Wispa Bite

Leanne gets sent to collect glasses. She exchanges words with Jez but does not stand up to him well. Natalie recognises Jez and gives Leanne a warning about her old friends.

Martin visits Rebecca in her room. He has not passed on her resignation because he does not want her to go. He loves her. She asks to be let go. He storms off. Neither of them are happy.

Debs and Duggie arrive in the Rovers. Jim asks Debs a question - as a woman does she need to make a mark on her surroundings? Debs says yes - not quite like a dog marking his territory but it needs doing. Jim accepts the advice. Natalie thanks Duggie for the posters - the police will be putting them up on Monday. Steve arrives and Leanne says that Jez has been around looking for him. Steve denies that there is anything going on - he does not have a mug handle on his back. As Jim leaves Steve asks him for a loan until the money comes in - £8,000. Jim collapses laughing - not a hope.

In a booth Colette and Curly are discussing DC Cavanagh. She is fairly upset. They have not eaten so Curly proposes getting a take away to eat at home. Colette goes into number 7 and Curly drives off. As he drives away the camera pulls back and we see the DC with the spare keys watching. Colette goes in and makes herself comfortable. DC Cavanagh enters number 7 by the back door. She says "That was quick", then realises her mistake...

Jim arrives back and tells Gwen that he has been thinking - and she is right - the place could do with a coat of paint. She can choose the colours (not quite what she had in mind judging by the look on her face).

Vinny has had a message to see Natalie. Se tells him that Leanne has owned up and she is sorry . He reckons that is a first step. She knows she should not have doubted him. He agrees it is a start.

Jez arrives and offers Steve cash to set up the minicab business. Steve says no. Jez says no strings. Steve still says no.

At number 7 the policeman asks why she is afraid? She backs away she should not be scared of him. She says he has been stalking her - no he is a guardian angel - she should worry about Curly - he needs watching - in his thirties and single. Curly arrives back with a leaking vindaloo and finds the DC scaring Colette. Curly calls him sick. The policeman tells Curly to watch it. He has seen strange guys like Curly before. Cavanagh spouts a lot of nonsense - he and Colette should be together - an item. Curly tells him to leave. He says they will not be believed - he is a good copper.

He dashes out and Curly says stop him. Duggie executes a perfect tackle and brings him to the ground. He asks to be released - he shows his warrant card. Curly tells Duggie to hold him down whilst they call the police - the warrant card will be useless once they arrive.

Closing shot of DC Cavanagh weighed down by Duggie (nice one Duggie - hard man of Weatherfield - oh and just give Steve the money there's a good boy).

Nice bit of comedy with Max and Fred - sadly Max is a character in search of a role at the moment. Ditzy blonde does not work now!

Did Jez have a hand in Tony's decease? Or is he back for longer?

As soon as John Bowe turned up on the Street I thought we would see a decent performance and I reckon that providing he stays he will have plenty to do as the years go by. Excellent. Also Natalie and Debs have a lot more in them in my opinion.

Curly should be going to France next week - or has it been forgotten?

And just how much is Gwen going to borrow to refit Jim's house out?

See you all again next week.

Monday 17 April

Gwen tries to find out from Curly what the fuss was about. He reluctantly tells her it was just an intruder. At thet moment, Duggie passes by and jovially remarks that it is not every day you get to wrestle a copper to the ground. Gwen is doubly intrigued, and starts hailing Curly as the Street's own Superman. Toyah shows them the poster asking for information about Tony's murder. She reckons that far from bringing the truth out, Tony was in with such a rough crowd that anyone who grassed up the murderer should look out for themselves.

Vikram has not sold his house yet, but tells Steve the deal is very much on, and Steve needs to come up with the money - soon. Steve assures Vik he will get it soon. They have to go to get the licence for the taxi firm that morning.

Ashley eats his breakfast to an accompaniment of nagging from Maxine about vegetarian food. He is not persuaded by her arguments.

Gwen nags Jim about how small the living room is, and dark. He agrees to repaint it, but refuses to consider structural alterations. Gwen is pacified when he promises to look at colour charts that evening.

In the cafe, Duggie delivers some advertising flyers to Danny to publicise the hardware shop. Roy puts up the murder poster, attracting speculation from Hayley and Toyah that they might have served the murderer in the cafe - or they might actually know the person! Toyah teases Roy about getting his alibi straight, but luckily Hayley knows that it was the night Roy went to dancing lessing in secret, and Hayley followed him there. Roy is releived.

Fred interrogates Ashley on the state of the dietary wars in the house, saying that a vegetarian butcher would be the laughing stock of the district. Fred implies that things are not well in the marriage, for a woman to take on funny ideas all of a sudden, it could mean that she is not 'satisfied'. Ashley subsequently orders Maxine to feed him meat tonight, making sure Fred is in earshot.

Collette informs Curly that there should be enough evidence to convict Cavanagh, since they found photographs of her, and some clothes he had stolen. They say goodbye, and she wishes Curly better luck with the next girl he meets. Curly says no thanks, he will stick with his telescope in future!

Vik is furious because Steve's previous conviction has prevented (or at least delayed) the minicab licence. He tells Steve that the deal is off, and he will borrow the money from Dev until the house is sold.

Sarah-Lou and Hayley are having a meeting about the costumes, but SL's heart isn't really in it. She blames the fact that everyone looks down on the stage manager. Hayley gently tries to get her to talk about it, and SL admits that being pregnant is to blame as well for her so-called friends not talking to her. She snaps that Hayley wouldn't know anything about being pregnant. Hayley agrees, but points out that she _does_ understand about being different and having cruel and hurtful things said about her. SL apologises for her remark. She sighs that she might as well go the the special mother and baby unit, despite feeling a freak. Hayley says that in Holland, where there were others going through the same operation, it was a relief not to be the odd one out, or have to explain everything.

Martin has confided in Danny about the latest in the Rebecca situation. Martin thinks Rebecca is trying to put pressure on him. In Danny's view, Rebecca can see Martin's priorities are with the family at the moment and she will leave him to get on with it. Danny helps Martin to realise that he has to choose: he can leave Gail for a full time relationship with Rebecca, otherwise he must let Rebecca go.

Break

Shampoo; furniture; spectacles; buying stuff on the internet; crispbread; paint; hair colour; satellite tv.

Sergeant Emma Taylor calls at Curly's to thank him for helping to get Cavanagh caught. He is modest about his achievements. After a bit of indecision, they agree to go for a drink in the Rovers later that evening.

Maxine tells Ashley she has realised she can't force him not to eat meat, and she has done him a sausage casserole. The exchange lots of hugs and kisses, and Ashley jokes she won't keep it up for long if she has to cook a separate meal for herself every night. Maxine looks indulgently at her husband.

Martin calls on Rebecca to apologise. He says he loves her, and wishes she would stay, but he will not stand in her way if she wants to go abroad. Rebecca looks unhappy and admits she doesn't know what she wants. They embrace.

Jim and Gwen look at paint colours, but she has her eye on a furniture catalogue as well. Jim is not amused. Gwen goes into a sulk about his bed which is 20 years old. Jim says the price is too much. Gwen sulks some more and says she has woken up with backache ever since she moved in. Jim relents and says they might go and look at some beds. Gwen immediately smiles and cuddles up to him.

Rebecca is full of doubt and confusion. Now that Martin has given her permission to go, she can't bear to be apart from him. Does his rapid change of heart mean he has stopped loving her? He assures her he does still love her. She really wants him all to herself, but he says until that can happen, what does she want? She wants to stay near him. They both are happy and Martin agrees to destroy her resignation letter.

Curly and Emma have a drink in the pub. She orders white wine, not red, so we know it isn't going to get very far tonight. They are awkward with each other at first, but soon get chatting.

Jez approaches Steve and reminds him that the offer of the loan is still on. Steve declines. Leanne is uncomfortable serving Jez, but his mind is on the poster behind her. It seems to rattle him - a fact that does not go un-noticed by Leanne.

Ashley is contented after eating 'the best sausages he has had in ages' though he feels slightly disloyal since he knows they did not come from Uncle Fred. Maxine triumphantly announces they were veggie! Ashley cannot believe that his wife has tricked him like this. She crows that he will have to rethink his arguments now, having enjoyed his meal.

Emma is impressed with Curly and eventually angles for him to invite her for a date. He expects to be told to get lost, but is pleased when she accepts. They agree to see each other on Wednesday.

After Jez has left, Leanne speaks to Steve. She describes how after seeing the poster he looked really scared. Steve wonders if Jez might know something about it. Leanne thinks it is more than that - she is convinced that Jez Did It! Credits.

Episode 4806 - sponsored by Cadbury's Wispa Bite. Brought to you by ITV. Update written by Helen Johns.

Nice to see Curly with a smile on his face. Thank heavens Martin and Rebecca have made a decision. Perhaps they will start to smile a bit as well. Touching scene with Hayley and Sarah-Loo. Pity Jim is being portrayed as so brainless - isn't it obvious that Gwen is addicted to spending money? She'll be applying for a walletfull of store cards soon, now she has a new address and name to put them in! That woman needs some discipline, Jim; and quickly!

See you next week :-) -- Helen Johns, Salisbury

Wednesday 19 April

Steve and Vikram are talking in the street, another argument about Steve's lack of money. The upshot is that Vik will go ahead alone.

Natalie asks Leanne if there's been any response to the posters. She thinks it's a bit early yet, but Nat thinks that someone must know who did it and is protecting them. Leanne reminds her it all happened years ago, but it only seems like days to Natalie. She won't rest til they're locked up. She's not sleeping and can't stand it much longer.

Alma is thrilled at Curly's news of his date. He however, is petrified, they're only going for a Chinese but he's got a stomach-ache. After all, it's been 5 years.

In the new shop, Rosie is helping Kieran, Danny's brother, with the alterations. They still haven't agreed on the name.

Leanne is getting worked up about the break-in. Jez was behind it and he could have killed her. Steve says he just talks big.

Duggie joins Vinnie in the café and tries to start a conversation. Does he want to go back to work at the Rovers. Perhaps Natalie would prefer it? Vinnie implies that Duggie is getting too friendly with Nat and he doesn't like to be made a fool of. Duggie tries to tell him that she's just a mate and needs support, not criticism. Has she been talking about Vinnie to Duggie? No, it's just some friendly advice.

Ashley tells Fred he had sausages for his tea. That's the way! Veggie ones. Keep your voice down! Fred won't believe Ashley when he says he liked the taste. He thinks they're highly injurious to the digestive tract. Ashley says he just made that up! Fred responds with a tirade. It's a free country, I can say what I want. And you know why? Because it's been defended by generations of brave men fed on the roast beef of olde England. Do you think the Duke of Wellington fed his army on veggie sausages? She'll be taking you on protest marches next. He advises Ashley to stamp it out, why not get her a mountain bike?

Interval

Leanne is still pushing the Jez angle. Why wouldn't he know Tony, they were both in the same line of business. Hey, there's a motive! She's going to the police. Steve advises her not to. There isn't enough to charge him and the first thing he'll do is find out who shopped him.

Dannie and Sally arrive back at the shop with some stock. They have to decide on a name now as the signwriter has arrived.

Vinnie comes into the pub for a heart-to-heart about with Natalie. They go into the back and discuss what they want from the relationship. He's also not happy that Duggie knows his business, though he found out through Debs and not directly from Natalie. Vinnie still doesn't understand why Nat can't talk to him. She suggests they want different things, he'll do anything to make it work, including taking the job on the building site. But Nat only meant it to be fun.

Vinnie starts again about other men. Is there something between her and Duggie? She denies this and he brings up Colin again. She's not going to be sorry for something that happened before she met him. She does regret it, but had her reasons. He's only seeing things from his prejudiced point of view. Well, there's no more to be said then. No, bye Vinnie.

Steve tells Vik he's got the license. But Vik still doesn't want him in unless he gets the money tomorrow.

Max and Ashley meet up with Fred and Audrey in the pub. Fred wants Max to sit with him and remarks how nice she looks, well-groomed and with lovely shoes. Oh, they're leather! If God had intended us to be veggies, why invent the cow? You have a very contradictory philosophy. Ashley says that Fred's a bully who doesn't like anyone disagreeing with him. Fred says Max is making a fool of Ashley, but he says she's got a right to her opinions and from now on, he's veggie too.

Curly and Emma are in the Chinese. She's transferred from Halifax due to a broken engagement. Was he in the force? Yes, and so was she (ie another woman). They make awkward conversation.

Steve tries asking Duggie for the money again. Could he have a sub of £8,000? Nothing doing, so he calls Jez.

Curly and Emma are warming up a bit. She's impressed that he was a binman and went on to take A-levels at night school. He says he's going to France next weekend to see family. Will he call her?

The name of the shop is finally D&S Hardware and DIY. Sally can have her choice of name on the next branch in New York.

Friday 21 April
Sunday 23 April

Matters are moving rapidly in Weatherfield at present. In case you have missed any of the press reports the following is a list of those who are leaving the Street: Nita, Leanne, Alison, Mark, Gary, Spider and now Gwen and allegedly a new baby. At the same time new sets are coming on stream rapidly (in ratucs Mike and Dewey are discussing how the Street is laid out) with promises of even more. I visited the Street last Autumn and I already feel as though it was historic timing and another trip will be needed before long!!

The Street is currently sponsored by Cadbury's Wispa Bite.
Written by Susan Wilkins Directed by Brian Mills

We open tonight with Gwen serving Jim a cooked breakfast. She is already pining to try out the new bed. Jim mentions the never, never and she jumps down his throat. She throws a wobbly and he has to agree to decorate the living room as well. He has to eat humble pie (or rather his scran).

Steve and Vik are signing on the dotted line for the taxi cab office with Duggie. Steve looks deeply unhappy and both Vik and Duggie thinks he is losing interest. (We know that Steve owes money to Jez and is in a tight corner). Steve implies the business is his and Vik an employee which upsets the latter. Steve and Vik get down to measuring the place up. Steve eventually departs with only half the work done.

Max is the proud recipient of an organic egg from Ashley and Fred arrives to cook a full breakfast - bacon, sausage, beefburger, black pudding. Max says no. But Fred points out what about the lord and master which she promised to "love honour and OBEY". Ashley chips in that he is sticking to his gun. Ash is cooking scrambled eggs with mushrooms and tomatoes. "And several nice rashers of bacon" says Fred. No says Ashley. But says Fred you will become anaemic, your brains will shrink and your bones will crack. Fred departs in disgust - but at least he tried.

Danny sees Martin going off to work. Even today - presumably someone else is on duty? Martin confirms she is and he admits that it is all going to hit the fan soon. At least Martin has something to look forward to as he goes into work.

Deirdre meets Hayley in the street. Dreary supports Hayley's actions in telling off Gwen but the latter has not been sleeping well. She is terribly concerned that she is not fit to be the supervisor. Also Debs meets Duggie and they agree to go out for a meal this evening - providing he has time to eat.

Hayley has finished her shopping as a new character Auntie Maya arrives to be greeted by Dev. Maya is going to work for Dev although she does not appear to have told her husband (Uncle Sandeep) whom Dev is keen not to upset - some conflict is bound to follow.

Jim and Gwen arrive in the Rovers. Jim is complaining so he is over the cost of the wallpaper, most expensive decoration he has ever bought - but at least they still have money for a drink. Janice fancies a bit of feng shui herself. Gwen wants an overall design concept!! Janice reckons a mirror inside the front door so when your old man rolls in on a skinful he takes one look at how bad he looks and rolls out again!!

Fred is leaning on the bar looking totally disgruntled. Max and Ash arrive for a drink and Fred notes that they have not abandoned alcohol. Fred has a drink off them. Geena is concerned that if a butcher does not eat meat there must be something wrong with it - proving Fred's point. Fred immediately leaps on the point loudly.

In the hospital it is surprisingly quiet and Martin and Rebecca find a few minutes for a discussion. Martin is settling into his new job. Rebecca has been doing some thinking so she has decided to get a solicitor so she can start moving her divorce forward - she wants to put the past behind and be free for Martin when he is free.

L'Oreal (with Andie MacDowell), Boots film processing, BT Cellnet can access the internet (including newsgroups?), Halifax, Parker pens, Moben kitchens, Courts, Heinz salad cream.

Duggie has some good news for Steve - the Council have coughed up and he can have the money on Tuesday. Steve wants it *now* - but no cash machine is going to produce £8,000. Steve is just not with it!!

Debs is eyeing up Duggie. She decides to be bold and in the absence of anywhere decent to eat she suggests eating at her place - in a most forward way. As Natalie says - "Come into my parlour said the spider to the fly". Natalie offers some simple recipes and steak from the freezer. Natalie tells her to go for it. Duggie is a lucky guy observes Natalie.

Spider (with a re-arranged hairstyle) arrives for the first time in months and gets an earful from Fred for his vegetarian behaviour as being the cause of the problem. Fred reminds Spider that Emily would not have spent time up a tree without his intervention. Geena tries to apologise for winding up Fred earlier. Fred departs.

Hayley finds Gwen and Jim looking at various paper and offers to help - Jim accepts but Gwen tells her to go - she is not wanted. Gwen decides they are going. Janice brings Jim up to date on events at the factory. Later Gwen and Jim are stripping the living room and discussing events. Jim accuses her of being a slave driver.

Martin and Rebecca are almost arguing over the divorce. Martin is convinced that it will have repercussions - with her husband likely to get difficult. Martin is worried about the timing - it will be easier once SL has had the baby. Rebecca wants proof it is not a casual affair - she wants to start planning the future.

Vik arrives to meet the new shop assistant - Aunt Maya. Uncle Sandeep was keen enough for her to work 20 years ago. She is bored doing the housewife bit and she wants to get to work. And as Dev points out she wears the trousers in her house!! If she wants to work Uncle Sandeep has not got a chance.

Hayley and Dreary are chatting in the corner. Again Dreary tells her not to worry - Hayley wants to revert to the shop floor. Dreary continues to try and talk her out of it. Hayley is not happy.

Martin is bringing Danny up to date with the proposed divorce. Martin does not want anyone to get hurt (a bit late for that).

Vik finds Steve in the Rovers. He wants Steve to contribute more than just money - Steve promises to sort it in a couple of days.

Natalie and Geena are discussing the lack of progress in finding Tony's killer. Fred is sitting in the corner looking deeply unhappy when Spider wanders in and delivers the "meat is murder" posters he alleges Ashley had requested. Fred storms out in a temper. And arrives at Ashley's. They tell him it is wind up. Fred says it is simply not acceptable to be a laughing stock. Ashley and Fred trade words. Fred tells Ashley to become a greengrocer - he is not going to pass on Elliotts to a veggie. Ashley is clearly finding his independence.

Debs and Duggie are enjoying the simple meal and red wine. Debs has settled in - odd for a world traveller. She is taking a break. Duggie tries to suggest she start her own salon but Debs just wants a quiet period. He suggest she opens a restaurant. Mere flattery. They are enjoying the red wine and drink to the "Here and Now". Duggie is thinking of going when Debs makes it entirely clear how she feels and they kiss. (Can I have Duggie's job please? Fancied that woman for years and if anything she looks better than ever at the moment). They split long enough for Debs to point out that they will be more comfortable upstairs. The wine has run out so Duggie goes to open another bottle.

Then wordlessly we have a fine piece of acting. Duggie fails to open the bottle. Then realism strikes him - what is he doing? He puts his hand to his mouth, to his hair, he looks upwards, visibly he is disturbed, he goes to the bottom of the stairs but cannot call out. He is even more agitated. He grabs his coat and goes out. Debs hears the door close and descends calling his name. She looks round but he has gone.

Well Steve is in another pickle although we can probably all work out how he is going to escape.

Hayley is just not the right person to be supervisor and Linda remains a fairly nasty piece of work - but then who was most against Hayley - yes Linda. Honestly Dreary is doing nothing to help by not seeing her side of the problem.

Debs is a fine looking woman - I know why Duggie lost his nerve - he did love his wife - but how many others could pass up the opportunity.

Ashley, Max and Fred - a very odd triangle. Sadly this story is one of those that I have difficulty believing.

Gail, Rebecca and Martin - presumably the divorce case is going to be the spark that brings it all into the open?

I am sad to see Nita depart - I had hoped that they might find her some strong stories but sadly we merely saw her getting used by a Freshco boss and little else.

Monday 24 April

I was a bit confused at the start of this episode, since it was shown on Easter Monday. It later became apparent, however, that the scenes were set on Tuesday, the next working day.

Gwen leaves the house in plenty of time to get to work early. She leaves Jim with instructions to get on with the work on the living room whilst she is out. Later, Gary calls round for a chat with Jim. They have a cup of tea instead of going to the pub, since Gary can't afford it. In fact, he admits he can barely afford to feed himself and the twins some weeks, despite claiming all the benefits he is entitled to. He is surprised at Jim letting Gwen talk him into getting a £600 bed, and on credit as well. It must be love? asks Gary; 'emotional blackmail' replies Jim ruefully. Jim wonders if Gary would be interested in some cab driving work, since Steve and Dev are starting the business. Gary thinks a job like that would be ideal for him. He approaches Steve later, who says that if Gary gets his taxi licence there will be a job for him in the cab firm. Jim is pleased to hear it. Gwen is not pleased when Jim says how much he admires Gary for coping the way he does, and not a penny in debt. The comparison rankles with Gwen, though Jim says that was not what he intended.

A nervous Tyrone prepares for his driving test at lunchtime. Jack and Kevin are both encouraging, but Tyrone can't help feeling he is jinxed. His fears seem confirmed when at the test centre he discovers that Mr Boyce - the man whose life he saved - is his driving examiner for a second time. Once out on the test, Tyrone stalls the engine and can't restart it. Mr Boyce says they will have to terminate the test, but Tyrone begs for five minutes under the bonnet to try to sort out the problem. Reluctantly, Mr Boyce agrees. Tyrone discovers a broken wire and says he could fix it temporarily if he had a piece of foil, such as from a cigarette packet. The examiner admits that, despite his heart condition, he is still smoking, and has a fag whilst Tyrone fixes the car. An anxious Jack's wait at the cafe has been worthwhile when a triumphant Tyrone returns, having passed.

Hayley is pleased that Gwen seems to have taken her warning seriously, turning up early and working hard all day. Sarah-Lou shows Hayley the picture from her latest scan. Hayley looks in wonder at the tiny person visible in ultrasound. It scares SL to death, she admits. Hayley kindly reassures her and says she is always there to talk to. SL seems glad to have a friend.

Mike is pleased with Linda for getting another contract signed with Cooper's. Linda asks if he has considered performance related pay for their girls. Helen Cooper has been telling her all about their scheme, and Linda is keen for Mike to adopt it. He dismisses the return of piece work as a retrograde step. Linda is insistent that this is different. Mike seems equally insistent that he will not change.

Natalie calls on Debs for the gossip about her date with Duggie. An angry Debs relates how Duggie left without a word of explanation. It must have been because of him and his wife, but she thought they were over that now. Debs requests Natalie not to intervene, or even to admit that she knows anything about it to Duggie. Later that evening, he calls on Debs with a large bunch of flowers. At first she shouts through the door that he is to 'Get Lost! but relents and lets him in - for a couple of minutes only. She is very prickly as he attempts to explain his actions. He can only say that he panicked and was scared that it would all go wrong. Debs is not satisfied with his apology. She says he is screwed up and she feels sorry for him. 'Not sorry enough to put up with me though', observes Duggie with a hint of regret. He leaves.

Maxine seems concerned that Fred might actually cut Ashley out of his wiil, and it would be her fault. Ashley, however, is determined not to give in to Fred's bully-boy tactics. In the Rovers, Geena watches as Fred refuses to speak to Maxine. Natalie tells him it is not worth falling out over a silly argument. Fred retorts that she wouldn't like it if her son went round preaching about the evils of alcohol. He immediately realises and apologises for his insensitivity. Natalie repeats that some things are not worth falling out over. Fred goes over to his son and daughter in law and says that he spoke in the heat of the moment, and would they accept a drink from him?

Steve is upset to discover that the money from Duggie has not been transferred. Jez is not unhappy, he wants to remain an investor in the business. Steve retorts that he just wants to deal drugs through it. Not deal, Jez reminds him, merely distribute them. Steve tells Jez he won't let that happen. Later Steve badgers Duggie for the money. Vik is annoyed at the way that Steve was speaking to their landlord, but Steve brushes off Vik's concerns. Later that day, Steve establishes that the transfer of money has taken place and he can withdraw some immediately. He meets Jez in the pub and attempts to repay the loan, with interest. Jez refuses to accept it, preferring to retain a stake in the business. Steve runs out of the pub after Jez. Jez punches him in the stomach and presses his face up against the phone box, where the murder poster is on display. 'See that?', barks Jez, 'He wouldn't do what I asked him to and look where he ended up'. Steve is left to contemplate Tony's face and wonder what he has got himself involved in. Credits roll as the camera zooms to the smiling face of Tony Horrocks through the glass of the telephone kiosk.

Wednesday 26 April

Not much happening tonight, most of it in the café.

Tyrone has passed his test and is looking forward to driving customers' cars and the company van. Kevin points out he's not on the insurance yet. They both have a full breakfast. Gail can't interest them in the healthy lunch option.

Sarah-Lou is missing Candice but isn't allowed to go to her house. Hayley gives her a book to look at. She'd rather be reading a magazine.

Jerry is at the nursing home to discuss the divorce with Rebecca. He doesn't want one and blames the marriage break-up on Martin. She says it's because Jerry was hitting her and that she wants a quick clean divorce. No chance of that. She started the fight, he wants his wife back and won't let Martin take her.

Tyrone tells Toyah about the new minicab firm. Perhaps he could be a driver? He also offers to teach her to drive.

Gail tells Martin about the book that S-L has. His phone goes off and David picks it up, it's a woman. Rebecca wants to see Martin about Jerry. (Surely can't be long now before someone hears Rebecca on this phone).

Vik and Steve are in their office telling Kevin about the cars they want. Vik wants wheels with style. Steve wants something cheap to take old ladies to the bingo. They clearly have very different visions for the business. They agree to all go to the auction, but Steve wants some lunch first. While they go to the café, he rings Jez and calls him round.

Natalie and Debs are in the house talking about the disastrous date with Duggie. Could she have been mistaken? No, Debs thinks it was pretty clear. Later, Debs is in the shop and Duggie tries to talk to her. She won't.

Vik is having his lunch and asks Gail if she'll recommend his taxi firm. Ashley and Fred are also there, with Spider. When he goes to the counter, Fred asks why he's there. Because he's nice. Fred thinks you can't be nice without protein, and calls Spider a shrivelled cucumber. Gail asks S-L about the book. She prefers it to the one Gail gave her, the diagrams make more sense. Gail says it's nice of Hayley to take an interest, but she can't have children of her own, and she doesn't want her... She leaves this hanging in the air without explaining herself.

Jez has arrived and Steve tries to return the money, saying that Vik will never agree to him being a partner. But Jez has already lined up one of his lads to be a driver. He'll be there later today to be hired. And Steve will hire him, he knows what's at stake.

Interval

At the hospital, Rebecca is updating Martin on Jerry's threats. He'll tell about the affair. But Martin agrees that this is in fact the truth, and it's up to him to tell his family before anyone else does. They have another argument about is this really what he wants, yadda yadda yadda. Martin says there's no turning back now.

Mike is in the Rovers with Linda, looking at her proposal. Will he implement it? Fred and Ashley have moved here. Fred says Spider is well-named. Ash should look out for his web, he'll soon have dreadlocks and BO. And if I eat a kilo of red meat a day, I'll be smug, fat and bigoted. Fred rallies well: I may be forced to sell it, but I eat in imperial! Spider joins them despite Fred's efforts and Ash invites him and Toyah to dinner next Friday, where they can swap recipes.

The driver has arrived. Steve sends him to the pub while he tries to convince Vik to hire him. He's quite conciliatory and agrees he was wrong to hire someone without consultation, but it's done now and he won't do it again. They agree to split responsibility for different aspects of the business between them.

Mike says Linda should ask herself why he hasn't tried this before. The answer is he has but scrapped it after 2 days. She uses this as proof he didn't give it a chance. She knows the girls and knows it will work. Mike relents. She can do it. He then adds that he's booked the horse-drawn carriage for their wedding. Kiss kiss.

Duggie arrives and tries to talk to Debs again. She won't let him and goes into the back.

Spider tells Toyah about the meal. She's not happy, what will she talk to Maxine about? They can do some female bonding. Toyah agrees when she realises she can tell all her friends she's going to a dinner party. They meet Max coming out of the salon and thank her for the invite but she clearly knows nothing about it.

In the café (again) S-L arrives to give Hayley the book back. It's the best she's read and is very grateful. She specifically mentions that it tells you to ignore scare stories. (This seems to be what Gail is doing, who seems to want to tell S-L all the gory details). Gail mentions again that she can tell her whatever she needs to know better than a book. She's really got her nose out of joint over this one.

The boys have come back from the auction with 3 good cars. Kevin hears their name, Streetcars. Sexy! (apparently).

Back in the Rovers, Max tells off Ashley for arranging a dinner party without telling her. Debs tells Nat she's happy to be single and that one is fun. Gail tells Martin about her miffedness. He says she's over-reacting, SL isn't blanking her, maybe she's embarrassed. But Gail isn't having Hayley talking about babies to her daughter. It's unhealthy to involve S-L in her problems and she'd better keep her distance!

Friday 28 April
Sunday 30 April

Tonight events are set on a Saturday and there was no obvious reference to the bank holiday weekend that I noticed. For the benefit of foreign readers the UK is currently enjoying a series of four day working weeks - the one including Good Friday, last week including Easter Monday and this week the (silly) additional bank holiday given a few years ago in place of the May 1st bank holiday much of Europe enjoys.

Written by John Stevenson Directed by John Anderson

A black taxi cab pulls up outside Underworld and Linda, spilling cleavage everywhere, emerges to start work on a backlog of quotes. Mike says she can manage without him and he directs the taxi driver to take him to the town centre. He will see her in the Rovers at lunchtime.

Steve emerges from the Kabin and runs into Vik who gives him an ear bashing over getting the firm up and running on Monday. Vik points out to Steve that his business ventures keep failing - a lack of publicity perhaps? Steve takes the point on board, takes some of the cards and agrees to get on the publicity trail once he has consumed his breakfast.

Natalie crosses the road and knocks on Debs door. The latter answers in her dressing gown and Natalie goes inside ... to find Dev reading the newspaper. Natalie is hoping for an appointment at the salon - will Debs give her a shout if there is a spare appointment? Debs has a big smile all over face. As Debs sees her out Natalie establishes that Dev has been there all night and that he has earned his breakfast and Natalie calls Debs "shameless" in a good natured way (and she wants to hear the details later). In the distance Aunt Maya is unlocking the corner shop. Once Natalie has gone Dev observes that she did not seem surprised to see him. Debs says they have been sisters a long time. Sadly Debs has to go to work and therefore Dev departs saying that he will see her. Debs observes that he will.

A WPC is emerging from a police car and knocks on Curly's door. He comes out and before Curly can actually ask her on a date she is saying yes (and she is on duty). Anyway it turns out that she is free this evening and Curly is safely returned from France and perhaps he could cook her a meal at about 7? Not surprisingly, given her enthusiasm, it would seem she is available. Both have big smiles on their faces.

Janice orders a full fry up in Roy's Rolls. Les apparently woke up, destroying her lie in, and ordered a full breakfast and she told him where he could go. Then she could not get back to sleep as she was dreaming of a fry up so she got up to go shopping and has left him eating cornflakes whilst she is having a "damn good fry up" - in about five minutes. (I think the picture above Janice's head is a Bulleid Pacific at Southampton Central on the Bournemouth Belle).

Rebecca, off duty, finds Martin, on duty, to show him some flats in the paper that she is going to check out. She wants to be safe from Gerry by moving. Martin points out that the flats are in rough areas - well she can only just afford them (Moston and Levenshulme I think).

Vera is having a drink and telling Gina that Jack has gone missing - he has not done the washing up. She knows he is up to something - she can always tell. Mike arrives to buy Linda's drink and she says it is about time they got the wedding sorted. He provides some assistance - a bright gold plus card (not over the top - has no-one told the producers that Platinum is the "in-colour" these days?). She can use it for anything she needs - it is a thank you. There is no catch.

Debs and Natalie are having a discussion in the corner. Debs says that the answers to all her questions are yes. Dev only let her have half an hour's sleep. So Debs and Dev are going to be seeing a lot of each other. There is no dead wife hanging over Dev's shoulder. Meanwhile in the corner shop Aunt Maya is giving Dev a hard time over not sleeping in his own bed last night. Vik arrives on his publicity mission and gets the job of looking after the shop for 30 minutes whilst Dev buys Aunty lunch. Duggie is trying to chat up Debs and asks her out. He saw her with Dev and she points out that he has no claim on her.

Janice arrives in the Rovers and tells Vera that she is needed outside. On the corner is a "lollipop man" - Jack in yellow high visibility jacket and a "Stop" sign. Vera is not impressed with Jack's intended new career - only over her dead body. "Well" says Jack "I can arrange that, I can wave you on to my crossing with my winning smile and the "POW"!. She drags him into the Rovers.

Dev buys Maya a drink. She launches into the standard refrain that he should get a good woman settle down and raise a family. Dev is sitting next to Steve and does not observe Natalie clearing glasses behind him. Maya is told that last might's woman is not wife material. As Maya departs Steve asks who it was and Dev tells him that Debs is the woman and she is all right for a bit of fun - but not for children and a family. Natalie hears everything.

Janice reckons a man in uniform is a good thing. Jack reckons that some fresh air and putting something back into the community (as he remarks as in the song "If I can help somebody") that must be a good thing. Vera is clearly not impressed by the arguments - and even less so when he explains that his pitch is, as Janice observes, immediately outside the bookies!!

Candice is at Sarah Lou's. SL has left school now (what happened to the stage production) and she will be studying at home with Martin and Gail adjusting their working pattern to be at home with her as much as possible to ensure she is studying. SL cannot get comfortable - however she sits. Will Candice call round with the gossip - she will but at the moment it is all about Sarah Lou.

Anyway Mike wants to know who in Linda's family is being invited to the wedding - then they can sort out the catering. Linda attempts to change the subject and goes to buy some drinks. She shows the gold card to Janice (extracting it from her bra), Janice: "Blimey you've got it all haven't you?" Linda: "Not yet, but I will have." {Nice one Linda}.

Natalie takes Dev to one side and reveals she knows shat he is saying - he tells her not eavesdrop. Natalie did not like it - Dev points out that he bought her a few drinks, had a meal and ends up in Debs' bed - that amounts to his definition of something very easy. [Point of information for the rest of us - what is the correct number of acceptable dates these days?].

At Curly's Emma Taylor arrives a little early. They go through to the kitchen and Curly details the meal he is going to serve - pasta and fish. Curly fills in some of the background. His family live in Crewe and never leave it. He has brought back a present - some perfume which she happens to like. He tells her about his daughter. Three this summer. He explains about the divorce and Raquel's imminent remarriage. Curly went expecting a disaster but it actually went well - very French - very civilised. They are drinking white wine. Curly admits he used to be mad about Raquel but he knows he has to move on.

Debs arrives at the corner shop as Maya departs. Dev is invited over to Debs but he cannot tonight - or tomorrow either. She hands back his tie - he is clearly giving her the brush off and she knows it.

Martin is in the Rovers and takes the risk of phoning Rebecca. The flats were not acceptable. No-one notices the call. She tells him she loves him - he says "me too".

Debs is crying on Natalie's shoulder - she cannot understand why it has gone wrong. Luckily big sis can tell her about the facts. As Debs observes - one rule for men and another for women.

Back at Curly's Emma asks about his name - well when he was on the 'bins that was his name (because he wasn't) and then it was stuck. And he likes it better than Norman, but she doesn't and he gives her permission to call him Norman. Anyway she says the name Norman reminds her of Vikings and using the salt and pepper pots he gives his impersonation of a marauding Viking. They both start laughing and then stand up to clear the table. They are both holding the same plate and then out it down and kiss once - and then again more seriously. She likes it - Norman - and they kiss again.

Into the credits and continuity man observes that Curly deserves some good luck.

Overall we moved along steadily but nice comic piece from Jack and Vera although I had hoped that we might see Dev in a better light than this, perhaps that deranged girl was not so deranged after all!

Emma (Angela Lonsdale) seems a little too good to be true - will the course of true love run smoothly for Norman this time around (and will everyone start calling him Norman?).

Fun and games ahead - I gather that Martin's secrets are about to emerge into daylight. Poor Gail - has she not suffered enough by being married to Gail in the first place.

No sign of Jez tonight- I assume he will be back shortly.

See you all next week - K Richard Whitbread
