Monday 1 May

Steve and Vik officially launch Streetcars. With more of a whimper than a bang, it has to be said. Steve mans mission control while Vik is left to do the driving. Trouble is, he doesn't know where the roads are, and hasn't yet bought an A to Z. It doesn't matter much though as they are not very busy. Later on, however, Jez calls on his services. He won't pay cash though, telling Vik he has an account which Steve set up for him. Vik is furious with Steve about it. Steve manages to placate his partner with optimistic 'spin' about account customers being just what the business needs.

Danny and Sally open the shop - against his better judgement it would seem, since he is in a foul mood. He moans to Steve that the shop only took £39 in the whole of last week. Later that night he has to concede that it has been their best day so far, but that's not saying much! Sally, however, is a little ray of sunshine because she loves being together and working together. Danny comments ruefully that the only thing they have been doing together is losing money.

Toyah calls at Ashley's house to check they are still going to her and Spider's that night. Maxine is unaware that Toyah is there and shouts to Ashley that they should make an excuse not to go. She laughs it off when she realises her embarrassing mistake but Toyah is unconvinced.

Debs has gone off men totally after the Dev debacle. Natalie wonders if there might be another chance for Duggie but Debs firmly says no. When Duggie appears in the Rovers at a loose end, Natalie phones Debs and encourages her to join him. Debs says no. Five minutes later she appears in the pub next to Duggie and buys him a drink. She makes it clear that she is available again after the other night's mistake. He suggests they go out that evening and Debs accepts.

Martin and Rebecca go flat hunting. They become disillusioned by the squalid cheap rooms on offer. He thinks he should help out by paying some of the rent himself so they can get somewhere better. Rebecca is reluctant to rely on his contribution, but agrees to think about it.

Gwen and Janice wonder what the catch is with the new contracts. They tackle Linda about it. She is happy to take the credit for the idea, and persuades them that it will be perfectly OK. So long as they do the work they will get paid more, not less.

Curly tells Audrey about his new girlfriend. She's happy for him.

Maxine and Ashley go to the dinner party at Toyah and Spider's, though Maxine is a bit overdressed. Spider's friends, Pip and Wilf, are there as well. Pip comments that Maxine's appearance is like a Barbie doll. Over dinner, Toyah, Pip and Wilf challenge Ashley about being a vegetarian and a butcher. Spider seems a bit embarrassed as they continue to bait the couple. Maxine fiercely defends her husband and his profession. They turn their attention on Maxine who, they say, as a beautician is colluding in a conspiracy of male power and exploitation by brainwashing women to spend a fortune on make-up and such like. Maxine decides she has had enough; she doesn't have to justify herself to them and won't stay to be insulted.

At the end of their evening Debs invites Duggie in for coffee. She says she made a fool of herself over the past few days. He has had time to realise he would be a fool to lose her. They both are willing to try again, and smile gently at each other. Credits.

Short update tonight as I have a stinking cold. Sorry. A reasonable episode though. Debs and Duggie are back on - he seems so much nicer than that Dev. Seems that life in Sally's palace is not agreeing with Danny. Turned into a right grumpy so and so lately. Perhaps Sally should do him some fish fingers for his tea. See you next week.

Wednesday 3 May

At the Platts, David is whinging that he doesn't want to go to school when Sarah-Lou doesn't have to. She's got an ante-natal class later and would prefer Gail not to go.

Maxine is discussing the failed dinner party with Ashley. She didn't want to go and then she got insulted. He tries to calm her down, saying it just wasn't their kind of thing.

Nat asked Debs how it went. Yes, he stayed the night. Well sort of, it was probably first night nerves...

Vik picks up a fare, she's going to a job interview imposed by the DSS. Steve rings with another fare for Vik, but he has no idea where it is. The current fare gives him detailed instructions. She used to work on the desk at Alpha Cabs. Hmmm, Vik may have a job for her. (Throughout, Steve is Base and Vik is Red One).

The ante-natal class is in a big room with lots of chairs and few people. Gail and Martin escort her there and then leave.

At the factory, Gwen is skipping about. Jim comes back tonight and will get a nice surprise. We can guess what that is! says Janice. No, it's the "finishing touches" to the house. The rest of the staff are still grumbling over the new contract.

SL does a grand job of putting a nappy on a doll. She seems quite pleased about it.

Vik and the fare arrive back at the office. Who's this, asks Steve. Eileen Grimes, "the best offer you've had all day". She checks the kettle, then leaps in when the phone rings. She takes 2 calls and assigns them, giving both detailed directions. Steve looks nonplussed. (Eileen seems a great addition to the show. Where have we seen her before?)

Duggie enters the Rovers, looking a bit sheepish. He says he'll understand if Debs wanted to call it off. He was disappointed and feels a fool. Debs says they've got plenty of time to sort it out. The factory girls arrive. Alison is not looking well. Janice tackles Linda, they're all working harder than ever but have no chance of meeting their targets, except Hayley. Linda says they all know that Hayley is the fastest, but she guarantees they'll be better off.

The class is over and SL is talking to Jenny, another girl of her age. They discuss boyfriends but both are off the scene. They agree they got caught out. SL goes to meet Martin, where Rebecca has a new flat advert. She leaves, but takes the wrong mobile phone. (Da da daaaa.)

Interval

Jim has returned, first stop, Rovers. Nat tells Duggie how much Debs enjoyed herself last night. He leaves looking pleased. Maxine tells Audrey about the dinner and how Ashley got picked on. "I won't have a load of lentil-sellers picking on my husband". Audrey says he must be used to this, meaning his treatment by Max.

Jim sees a load of new furniture in his living-room and is not pleased. He storms into the factory for a word with Gwen. Does he like it? He's surprised, how much did it cost? She'll tell him later.

Eileen is leaving for the day. Steve negotiates wages. They agree on £5.50 an hour and she wants a new chair.

At the factory, Mike and Linda are discussing the new contract. Many will get the same money, but Janice, Gwen and Bobby will be down £5-10. Linda is shocked, not on her figures they won't. Ah, but Mike changed the timings! Linda knows this will make her look bad, as she gave her word, so when the factory is empty she locks the door and sits down at Janice's machine.

Gail is setting the table. She decides to ring Martin's mobile to see what time he'll be home. The answer is: Hello sexy, realised your mistake? Who's this, says Gail. Rebecca recognises the voice and hangs up.

Jim and Gwen have a big argument over the furniture. she should have consulted him. How will she pay for it?

Max and Ash are at dinner. Is she a bully? Would he rather be eating meat? He won't deny that he would, but his first priority is what makes her happy.

Gail tells Martin about ringing his mobile. He says it was switched off and when looking at it, sees the mistake. I think Gail saw the look on his face. However, he comes up with a plausible explanation: Gail rang a wrong number, then when she dialled again, his phone was turned off. (Did Gail dial again, didn't see this). She accepts this, but I'm not clear on whether she's starting to suspect.

Back at Jim's, they're still arguing. He doesn't understand how she can clear one debt, just to start another. She insists it's OK and is taken care of. But Jim wants to send it all back. The final nail in the coffin: Gwen sent all the old furniture to the tip. Jim is furious!

Friday 5 May
Sunday 7 May

First a personal plea. Yet again I have missed Friday evening's episode. Is there anyone who can take on writing some updates to cover Friday's episodes please? I might then understand what happens on Sundays!!

Also before long I shall be going on holiday and will miss at least two Sundays. Is there anyone who fancies sitting in for the odd episode please?

Tonight adventures in Weatherfield are brought to us by ITV and the programme is sponsored by Cadbury's Time Out Chunky.

Written by Peter Whalley Directed by Tony Prescott

I think the events are on a Sunday.

At the Rovers Natalie wants to know where to track down Steve MacDonald and both Leanne and Betty suggest asking Jim, so they do. She puts down her tea and heads off down the Street whilst Betty laments that the shopping list remains unshopped and heads off to do it herself.

Gwen is studying the cut up store card whilst Jim is closing the door on Natalie who has been told to find Steve over at Streetcars. Gwen is off the Rovers for a drink with the girls and Jim offers to cook lunch. Jim congratulates Gwen on cutting up the card "As if she had much choice" she says. She makes it clear to the viewers (but not to thick skinned Jim) that she is unhappy at being made to stay out of debt.

At Streetcars, Steve is taking a call and sends Vik on his way as Natalie arrives. Vik has a buyer for the house meaning that they will soon have more cash. Steve then provides Natalie with more information on how Jez "admitted" to Tony's death. Steve refuses to talk to the police direct because the likelihood is that if Jez gets arrested and then gets out for any reason he is bound to finger Steve and seek retribution.

Danny is off to play football but Sally wants to go and do a new layout at the shop. Danny wants his day off - six days a week is enough for him. Sally professes ignorance of football which jars oddly with my past memories. Outside on the Street Martin is coming out his house and is hailed by Danny who shouts that he thought he was not playing. Martin denies this volubly and then wanders over to Danny and conspiratorially admits that he is off to see Rebecca. Danny warns him that it will fall apart. Debs is prowling around looking for Duggie who seems to be avoiding her but she catches him and offers him an invitation to a drink in the Rovers or her house. Sarah Lou comes out of the Kabin with Alison, the latter being keen to start a "mothers to be bonding session". SL2 gives her short shrift - she does not want to have a baby and could happily wait ten years before one comes along. She returns to the Platt residence in high dudgeon and teenagerishly retires to her room. Gail is hoovering and David suggests they go to watch Martin playing on the Red Rec - Gail agrees they should go.

Natalie returns to the Rovers and asks Leanne about Jez. Leanne is reluctant to say anything. Betty returns with the very expensive shopping. Leanne admits that Jez forced her to leave the door open and that Jez is a drug dealer and that he is a nasty piece of work but she has no knowledge of his involvement in Tony's death. Natalie contacts the DI.

Martin having decided not to play football is sitting on the floor of Rebecca's flat reading the paper (have they nothing better to do?). Rebecca wants to buy some cushions so they go shopping providing she walks at least 10 yards behind.

In the Rovers Gwen is moaning to Janice about being bossed around by Jim. After her first husband she swore she would never be bossed about again. She has decided she is leaving him. Debs comes in to wait for Duggie. Steve comes in and Leanne immediately accuses him of telling Natalie about Jez. Naturally Steve admits to nothing. Norman and Emma arrive together (having missed Friday what is the current state of play - did she stay over?) and he recommends lunch. Betty says they can have anything they like so long as it is roast beef. They order roast beef. The DI arrives and Natalie takes him through the back. Emma recognises and realises it must be important to get him off the golf course on a Sunday.

Lilt (newish advert and fun), BT (sick internet advert starring an anorak), Anchor butter (new advert to me), Synergie wrinkle cream, National Lottery giving away Thunderball tickets, Ambre Solaire sun screen, BT - extra line.

In the back of the Rovers Natalie reveals the limited information concerning Jez. The DI will check him out - but he really wants to speak to the source. Natalie keeps her promise and refuses to reveal her source. The DI piles on the pressure. The DI reckons that there is little they can do.

Norman and Emma have finished two large roast beefs and she says they need a walk. Norman admits he likes walking and has all the stuff. And what about camping says Emma - Norman admits he has all the gear and only gets concerned when she suggests 20 miles the following weekend. Anyway he will get the time off and they will go camping. (I assume with only one tent - so that might have answered my earlier question). Norman is a little unfit so next weekend might prove a little bit of challenge!

Alison joins Gwen and Janice. Gwen updates Alison and Gwen goes through her moans again - but she has nowhere to go and where will she put the new furniture. Gwen does not like being told what to spend.

Steve notes the departure of the DI but refuses to let Natalie release his identity. Leanne also gets caught in the cross fire as Steve points out that if anything is said Jez is quite capable of generating another dead body to prevent a successful prosecution.

Debs catches Duggie in the Street - he was clearly about to drive off but she grabs him by the hand and pulls him off to her house. He almost fails to lock the car she is in so much hurry. Once inside Debs says that he is avoiding her because of their last assignation when nothing happened. Duggie is embarrassed but Debs points out that he is not the only man to whom this has happened. Anyway she is tired and fancies having a lie down. He looks at her and says "Now?". She says "Now!" and hand in hand they walk up the wooden hill.

Gail and David are returning from the Red Rec. All a bit odd - the team was there - Danny was playing after all but there was no sign of Martin anywhere. Gail does not seem particularly concerned.

Danny returns home and suggests they go for a drink, no children after all. They only drew so nothing to celebrate. Sally turns off the cooker and goes upstairs to change (well we can all hope but sadly when she turns up later she only appears to have changed her clothes and not her personality). Danny is bewildered.

Martin and Rebecca return from the shopping expedition and she catches him checking his watch. Time to go home? She looks in his bad - all his football clothes are clean. No worry says Martin I have a dirty set in the car from training in the week and will swap them before going home. Rebecca looks forward to the cricket season - that lasts all day! She does not like the thought of him going home to his wife.

Jim arrives in the Rovers for a pint and tells Gwen that her dinner will be ready in ten minutes. Janice asks if she is leaving before or after eating dinner. Alison points out that Jim cares for Gwen in his own way and in any case Janice observes that Gwen is useless with money and has nowhere else to go. Gwen is worried about being bossed around - as Janice notes Baldwin and little Baldwin boss her around - that is two men already.

Danny and Sally arrive and Sally justifies her need to get it right. She is afraid of another failure like with Greg when the whole Street will have it in for her. Danny now knows what is eating her but looks no happier; he reckons it is just another business which might fail.

Debs and Duggie are at the bar with big smiles on their faces and two glasses of red wine are ordered!!!!. Debs tells Duggie to stop smiling or everyone will guess what they have been doing! And yes Debs will tell Natalie as soon as she can.

Jim and Gwen are at the bar and Jim tries to bridge the gap and Gwen, with a lack of options agrees and goes off to have her dinner.

Martin arrives home to a series of questions - where was he? Martin says that too many players turned up so he was asked to join another team playing at the college rather than on the rec. Sarah Lou spots that Martin is lying and says so out loud - she knows that he has been dropped and he did not want to admit it! Martin accepts this lifeline with pleasure as he can ask that the subject change and they can have a laugh at his expense. Last match of the season anyway. Gail has been thinking of other matters - has Martin seen Rebecca recently? If so will he invite her round for a meal tomorrow. She deserves their support and they have not been following their previous concern. Martin's inexpressive face can hardly convey the thoughts passing through his mind.

Natalie storms into Streetcars and tells Steve that she has no choice - she has to tell the police who put Jez in the frame and he can expect a visit soon. Sadly, for the second successive scene, a wooden faced actor cannot convey the emotions which are likely to be endured at such a moment.

Can it be long before Gail has to suffer another complete heartbreak - and why does she not recognise the signs (pre-occupation with SL I can only conclude).

The only way for Steve to get Jez off his back is to work with the police - and wear a wire - will it be any great loss if it goes wrong?

Is something going to go right for Sally - she and Danny hardly seem to be working well together?

I assume we are already working towards Gwen's departure. I will be sad to see Jim go though.

Be back next week.

Monday 8 May

Natalie tells Steve he should go to the police, or she will drag him there. He bluntly says that if she forces a confrontation with the police he will deny everything. Natalie cannot believe that Steve would lie like that. He assures her that he does not want to end up like her Tony.

Gwen manipulates Jim into agreeing to set up a joint back account out of which the bills would be paid. Including the credit card debt. As she simpers and purrs round him she looks far too 'butter-wouldn't-melt' for my liking. How can Jim be so trusting?

Jack begins his work as a lollipop man, and Betty tips him off that Vera is lurking round he corner keeping an eye on him. She would rather he didn't do the job; on the contrary, he encourages her to apply to be one as well. Vera informs him that she 'would rather shovel horse muck, bag it, and sell it door to door' than work alongside him in the fetching uniform, and the pouring rain.

Martin tells Rebecca that he is supposed to invite her round for a meal as Gail thinks she is lonely after her separation and needs cheering up. Rebecca is horrified at the idea of Gail being nice to her when she wants to steal her husband and tells Martin he will have to refuse.

Danny is concerned that the shop isn't making enough money for them. He is enthusiastic, therefore, when his brother Kieran offers him a day's work - cash in hand. Sally is less than happy about being left on her own.

Eileen takes a call from Jez requesting a taxi. Vik takes over the phone and tells Jez to go and pester someone else.

In the cafe, Nita asks Curly whether he is going to apply for a vacant Area Manager position. She is interested because that would leave a Store Manager post wouldn't it? Then again, she wonders whether it would be too cheeky to try for the Area Manager post herself. Curly does not discourage her, since he does not think he himself has any hope of getting the job. Alison suddenly feels unwell. Gail sends Jim to fetch Kevin and orders Curly to phone an ambulance. Kevin runs round the corner just as Alison is being loaded into the ambulance. She is terrified she is going to lose the baby.

Eileen and Vik are eating their lunch when Jez barges in shouting the odds about getting a taxi as and when he requires them. He and a defiant Vik have a shouting match and Vik lunges at Jez with a fistful of chips. Jez is incandescant with rage, and with ketchup smeared on his face and in his hair, his parting words to Vik are 'You are DEAD!'

Gail tells Sarah-Lou about Alison being taken to hospital. They speculate about whether she might lose the baby. SL says that if it were her in that position, it would be the best thing for everyone if she did lose the baby. Gail is shocked and snaps that SL shouldn't be so selfish.

At the hospital, the doctor tells Alison that her blood pressure is high and she is at risk of pre-eclampsia and will have to stay in under observation. Alison is very anxious, but Kevin reassures her that she is in the best place to be taken care of.

Natalie asks Emma if she knows if there is any progress in the murder investigation. Emma says it is not her case, but everything possible will be being done. Emma confides to Curly that giving bad news to relatives is one of the worst aspects of her job. Emma is looking forward to her weekend of outdoor pursuits with Curly; he clearly has reservations about it, but wants to be with Emma. Nita informs Curly that she has decided to apply for the Area Manager job - and can she please have a reference? Curly reassures Emma that even if he himself did get the job, it would be in Preston, so he would not have to move away from her. Danny and Keiran relax in the pub after their day's work with a few drinks.

As Martin is leaving the hospital, Rebecca says that Gail has phoned her to invite her for the meal. She was so flustered that she agreed to go. On Thursday. Martin cannot believe it. Little does he know, but Gail has also invited Gary Mallett. She smugly tells Martin that she thinks their two single friends just need a nudge in the right direction to get them together.

Sally is putting the stuff away from outside the shop and she spots Danny emerging from the pub. She naturally gives him a earful, but he snaps back that at least he has earned fifty quid, and she and the girls cannot live on fresh air.

Steve returns to the taxi office and Vik tells him about the visit from Jez. Steve is appaled when Vik boasts that he kicked Jez. He tells Vik that when a man like Jez tells you that you are dead, he means it, since he practically admitted to Steve that he killed Tony. Vik cannot believe that Steve got involved with Jez, but Steve says he had no choice. Vik would have liked to be informed. Steve warns him he will have to watch his back constantly from now on, he can't emphasise enough how dangerous Jez can be. Steve realises that he has no option but to go to the police and tell them what he knows of Jez's involvement in Tony's murder.

Wednesday 10 May

I'm on holiday next week, so the update will be late (even more than this one!) But as long as the video works, I will be able to do it on my return.

At the Platts, Gail and Martin are discussing the forthcoming meal. Martin says that Gail is playing Cupid and Rebecca doesn't need their help. Sarah-Lou can't understand why they're going to this fuss, she's just someone Martin works with. Because she's had a tough couple of months and we're going to make sure she has a nice evening.

Janice and Gwen meet Kevin at the garage and ask after Alison. He says she's scared. They say they'll visit, as they can choose their own hours under the new pay deal.

Steve arrives back at the office from the police station. Vik is concerned that Jez is still on the loose and looking for someone to kill. Steve points out this will be him if Jez thinks he's grassed him up. Vik is still angry. If I'd wanted a drug-dealing partner as a murderer, I'd have found one myself.

Sally and Danny are in the shop. He wants to apologise. For leaving her with the shop or for what he said? Both. Sally isn't prepared to listen. They've made a commitment now and they can't be thinking about what it would be like to be back at the market. Danny would love to continue this conversation, but Kieran has arrived so they can finish the job they started the other day.

At the hospital, Alison is very tearful and looks distraught. She blames herself for putting the baby at risk, because she stayed at work as long as she could. Kevin assures her both she and the baby will be fine. He looks very concerned as he hugs her.

Janice and Gwen are in the Rovers on their way to the hospital. They ask Mark for a favour. He thinks it's for the time off, and tries to explain they're not on flexi-time. No, that's not the favour, they're going anyway. They want money for flowers. If Alison hadn't been working for him and his father, she wouldn't be in hospital in the first place. He's only got a fiver or a twenty. They grab the twenty and flounce off, much to Geena's amusement. Steve arrives and tells Natalie that he's told the police. The rest is up to them.

Alison now looks much calmer. Martin shows his face and then meets Rebecca in the hall. Neither of them are looking forward to the dinner this evening. Martin tells her about Gary. Meanwhile, Kevin is telling Alison that if she's staring at the walls thinking, she should be thinking about nice things: names for the baby, paint for the nursery, what school it will go to. The girls arrive with flowers and he leaves. Janice comments this is the last rest Alison will have for the next 18 years.

Bobbi is in the Rovers and Geena comments on how the girls seem a right laugh. They agree to ask her to the next night out. Curly and Nita are discussing their interviews for the area manger's job. They didn't get any clues, but both said they'd be prepared to move. Natalie tells Steve that Jez has been taken in for questioning.

Danny gets back to the shop to a sarcastic Sally. But he has been thinking about the shop today, he's bought some stock. £40 on after-shave and perfume from the guy who went bust. Sally points out that he couldn't sell it so why should they?

Kieran and Danny are in the pub. Danny wants to get back, but Kieran tells him that he and Sally need space. And what Danny needs is another pint and some football talk. Danny is persuaded. Rebecca arrives to meet Martin and Gail. When Martin goes to get her a drink, Kieran asks for the lowdown. Martin assures him he's not her type. Kieran however introduces himself, and Martin harries the girls back to the house.

Eileen takes a call for a cab to the airport. Is she going on holiday? Vik tells her aggressively not to ask such questions, the customers will think they're going to rob them. Eileen tells him not to take out his spat with Steve on her.

Gail is introducing Rebecca to the kids when Gary arrives. He looks shocked.

Steve comes back from driving and tells Vik the good news about Jez. But he knew this 8 hours ago, could he not have told him? Not on the radio, with Eileen listening. Vik is angry and leaves.

The dinner is proceeding haltingly. Rebecca says this is a nice change from microwave meals for one. Gary thinks they're a godsend as he has the kids to look after, and explains his situation to Rebecca. David asks if she has a boyfriend. She says she's not up for grabs. Neither am I says Gary. Both seem happy to have made this clear.

Curly and Emma are looking at the map prior to their weekend away. It' s only 20 miles. But it's all uphill! He admits to Geena that he's not really the outdoors type.

Gary finally gets away from the meal at 10, using Emily as an excuse. Rebecca leaves too and Martin gives her a lift. In the car, they agree it was a nightmare, Martin saying that no-one except Gail wanted to be there. Gail of course was all smiles and clearly thought it was a lovely evening. Rebecca felt she was making a fool of Gail. She hates what they're doing and hates herself.

Danny finally gets home to Sally. She 's furious and starts a row. Then Sophie wants to know what's going on. Sally reminds Danny that the three of them have been through this before and she's not prepared to go through it again.

Jez arrives at Streetcars and gets Steve round the throat. Did he grass him up? Steve calms him down by pointing out that he borrowed money from him and they're mates. Jez accepts this and says Steve doesn't have the bottle. He's going to have to get away, so wants his money tomorrow. But if it was you....

Friday 12 May
Sunday 14 May

Sadly the spin doctors at ITV feel that knowing the outcome of story lines prior to appearance on the screen in episodic format is important to defuse viewer expectation. In this respect my week was ruined by knowing that WPC Emma was taking Curly/Norman to a nice hotel rather than roughing it in a tent. All right - a minor story line and why does it matter? What benefit did ITV extract from allowing the denouement to be revealed prior to transmission? Normally I avoid the magazines which give away the game but this was simply one of those things.

So in the same spirit I advise our Canadian and other foreign readers with a delayed transmission date not to read further (it does say spoiler up there) for fear of upset.

And perhaps ITV could be a little more restrained?

Anyway tonight's episode only partially came from Weatherfield as Curly and Emma were still out walking through the countryside and in an early scene we see Curly trying to convey to Emma just how strongly he feels about her, he is leaning on a gate and trying to open his heart concerning the impact she has had on him. After he expresses his love for her the camera switches to another angle behind him and we see he is conversing with a donkey.

Throughout the episode we return to Curly and Emma from time to time. By the end Curly has managed to convey to Emma how important she now is to him and how he feels about her, even though he explains that most of the time he cannot find the right words. We are left in no doubt that his feeling are reciprocated. Sadly I am unable to precisely quote the silly rhyme he invents whilst walking over the fells but we should be aware that Curly sees his future deeply entwined with Emma and the previous night obviously went well despite his five year's of abstinence (plenty of entwining I suspect). Is it too much to hope that the course of true love runs smoothly this time in the Street?

The episode actually opened in StreetCars with Steve telling Vik that he has not paid off Jez. Vik looks concerned at this (and I have to admit that after a shaky start Vik's character is settling down) until Steve explains that Friday night's episode closed with Jez being arrested by the police and that consequently there was no chance to hand over the money. Both Steve and Vik look relieved by the removal of the immediate threat,

Later Geena (or is it Gina?) pops her head round the door and asks for a taxi into town. Jez's planted driver gets the job (much to his stomach's objection as he is eating a burger) and disappears up town. Later, when Vik is out, he returns singing her praise and threatening to make the Rovers his local. He also reveals that he has heard that Jez has been formally charged with killing Tony Horrocks and on this news Steve decides to up the odds and bravely dismisses the planted driver who destroys some furniture on his way out. Everyone seems to think Jez may not be around for a while. (But Jez is owed at least £8k and probably has some fairly nasty friends - I think Steve may have bitten off a little more than he can chew).

Debs has heard from Natalie - but there is little news so far (the news of the Quigley arrest not travelling rapidly) and Betty points out she did not want to work all day. Debs offers to cover the rest of the shift.

At the newly enlarged Underworld which not only seems to have acquired a huge new working area but also a vast number of new (and silent) faces - although we appear to have lost Mike's spice girl - Dreary has checked the computations on the new pay arrangements with Mike and her figures are correct. Despite having worked hard all week the girls are achieving little more than basic pay and rebellion is in the air again (no sign of Hayley) but the rest are feeling very hard done by. General condemnation of the new contract and Janice is convinced that the blame lies with the fragrant Linda shafting her old friends.

Later the girls gather in the Rovers and continue to bemoan their fate. (Indirectly I am aware of these schemes. The timings would have to be: a) quoted in advance and b) subject to formal testing by a capable individual and c) subject to controls for quality etc - Mike has been totally unfair by not proving that the *average* individual can achieve the production times - Hayley is an exception and the others should not be measured by her work rates. We never saw a formal O&M study against which the standards should be assessed). Linda wanders in and offers a drink to the girls - not surprisingly they refuse and a few minutes later Janice wanders up to the bar to ask why their earnings are down. Linda reveals that the times were known and that to enable the first week to go smoothly she helped ensure that they achieve the standards. Janice is not impressed but hardly knows how to respond.

Kevin has taken Rursie and Surphie to see Alison in hospital. On return he is asked where they will sleep once Alison has had the baby. Well the baby will sleep in his and Alison's room initially but later Rursie and Surphie will have to sleep on the roof. He admits he is joking but he senses there is a serious concern here.

Later he wanders into the Rovers and acquaints Jim with the position. The only way Kevin can find the money needed to acquire somewhere larger is to sell his share of the garage and he puts Jim on notice of his intention. (What will Natalie say when she finds out?)

A chunk of the episode was taken up by Candice sitting in Roy's Rolls with Sarah Lou. Candice has been asked out on a date by a boy and we get a lovely piece of description by Candice of how the invitation was made and how she responded and how in typical female mode she eventually got the date - bowling tonight in a foursome. She reminds SL of the end of play party on Friday night and SL has to go.

Later SL asks Gail and Martin if she can have something nice to go the party - after all she has worked hard on the costumes and deserves to join in the celebration. They point out that she is due almost any day and can hardly go out (wrong - if she feels like going they should encourage it). She is upset and tells them that she has decided to give away the baby.

A little shorter than usual tonight - due to time and other constraints. Sorry if I missed anything important.

Monday 15 May

The main storyline tonight revolved around Sarah-Louise and her imminent motherhood. More of that later. Other goings-on in and around the street comprised the following:

Eileen can't understand why Steve is suddenly so cheerful. Vikram, however, is not amused at how close Steve's shady dealings came to ruining the business. Steve assures Vik that he's learned his lesson and won't get involved in anything like that again. Nita informs Vik that the sale of their house has completed, and though she is moving in with a friend of hers, he will be homeless. Vik thinks he has found the perfect solution: the flat above the taxi office. Steve is upset to find the office stuffed with boxes which Vik is in the process of moving upstairs. Steve says that he moved into the flat first - didn't Vik see his sleeping bag? They continue to bicker, much to Eileen's annoyance. She eventually provides the solution by remarking that building the Berlin Wall between them would stop them arguing. Steve decides that the solution will be to build a partition wall o make an extra bedroom. They will get Pat to help them knock it up this weekend. Sorted.

Curly and Emma arrive home from their weekend trip, all smiles and kisses. They agree to meet later for a drink. On Curly's arrival at home he discovers a letter from Freshcos onforming him that he has been unsuccessful in his application for the area manager post. He cites this to Alma as proof that his career is non-existant. She says that at least other areas of his life, Emma, are keeping him happy. Nita didn't get the job either, but she has found out on the grapevine that the person who did get it used to run the biggest Freshco store in Scotland. All the other applicants are being encouraged to apply for the newly-vacant Scottish post. Nita has also heard that Curly has been hotly tipped to get it. Nita encourages Curly to apply for it; after all there is nothing to keep him in Weatherfield - is there? Alma also encourages him later, since she heard Nita on the phone to the personnel department so knows all about it. She quickly surmises from Curly's reluctance that he might be unwilling to leave Emma. He seems unsure, saying it is early days in the relationship yet. Alma and Audrey gently tease Curly about being in love. Later, Emma commiserates about the area manager post. Curly doesn't mention anything about the Scotland job.

Jim tells Tyrone about Kevin's plans to sell his half of the garage business, which could mean that one or both of them are out of a job. Tyrone mopes in the cafe long after his lunch hour is over, and eventually Jim finds him. Jim tells him that plenty of other garages would be happy to employ a good young mechanic, though Tyrone doesn't seem convinced.

Bobbi and Janice complain to Geena about how hard up they are under the new pay scheme. They have to have another pint to drown their sorrows. Bobbi will never be able to save up for a house at this rate. Janice decides to ask advice from Dev, and persuades him to look at their contracts. He reckons that the contract seems OK, and there is no get-out clause for them. They signed up to it, they have agreed to the terms. Janice goes off muttering that Dev is a boss as well and would therefore naturally agree with Baldwin. Bobbi seemed quite impressed by Dev though....

Events in and concerning the Platt household were foremost tonight, spread over the course of the day's action. At breakfast, Gail is understandably preoccupied by Sarah's sudden announcement that she wants to have the baby adopted. Martin is convinced that it was said in the heat of a teenage tantrum because they wouldn't let SL go to the party. He reminds Gail that SL is just a kid. When she confronts Sarah about it later, Gail begins by telling SL that it was 'silly' to say that she wanted it to be adopted. SL just doesn't know what she wants. Gail flies off the handle and tells her she doesn't realise the implications of what she is saying. Gail says it is just as well that it isn't up to SL.

SL has to get out of the house and goes to the Kabin. Here she overhears Gary telling Rita that the twins are the hardest work he has done in his life. She begins to cry and Rita goes around the counter to comfort her. Too late, Gary protests that the children are worth all the effort really. In the back room, SL cries and eventually manages to tell Rita that since she mentioned adoption Gail won't even speak to her. She can't cope with everyone trying to tell her what to do. She feels so scared - what if she can't get the baby out? what if it hurts her too much? how will she know how to look after it? Rita is reassuring, saying that lots of people will be around to help.

Meanwhile, at the love-nest, Martin and Rebecca have lunch. He explains about the fuss at home, that SL wants the baby adopted but it isn't going to happen since Gail is dead against it. Rebecca reminds Martin that the authorities will always take the mother's views as paramount - even if the rest of the family are against it. Martin says that is crazy when the baby's grandmother is offering to bring it up. [Updater's note: I must have missed that bit - where Gail changed her mind from saying the baby was SL's responsibility and she couldn't sit back while Gail did all the work. Gail's offering to bring it up now, is she? ;-)] Rebecca says that ultimately it will be SL's decision, and there's nothing Martin and Gail can do about it. Of course, Rebecca understands why SL might think that adoption would be the answer, enabling her to get her life back on track. It could be the right decision, for Sarah ... for all of them? Martin concedes that it could - though there is no way that Gail will let it happen - she is getting more excited about this baby every day. Rebecca questions whether the baby is starting to mean more to Gail than to Sarah-Lou. Martin ponders.

Audrey is shocked when Gail tells her. Gail admits she doesn't know if SL is saying it because she means it, or because she is frightened. [And judging by tonight's outbursts Gail has no intention of trying to discover which one of these it is] Audrey is adamant that Gail must put a stop to any talk of adoption. She speaks from bitter personal experience. [So, a rational and unbiased viewpoint there, then.]

Later, Gail informs Martin that they have to do as her mother says and put an end to it. Martin warns her that it might not be so easy; a colleague told him that it is up to Sarah - it's the law. Gail is incredulous, after all the baby is _her_ flesh and blood; _her_ grandchild. Martin stops her, saying it is not Gail's, not theirs, it is Sarah's and only Sarah's. During this last part, SL has entered through the front door.

Gail sits Sarah down and tells her that the decision she must make in the next few days or weeks is gravely important. In the meantime, SL is _not_ to mention adoption outside the house, otherwise the child will be whisked away to foster parents. Sarah becomes upset as Martin gently says that she must think about this decision, though she will have their love and support whatever she decides in the end. Sarah just sobs that she doesn't know what to do; she just wants it all to stop. Martin cuddles her as Gail look on. Credits.

Episode 4822 - sponsored by Cadbury's Flake. Brought to you by ITV.
Update written by Helen Johns.

Great acting from Helen Worth (Gail) and Tina O'Brien (Sarah-Lou) in these baby story scenes. Don't you just want to slap Gail for the way she is handling this? Good writing - in character for Gail, a woman whose mouth is running faster than her brain at the moment. See you next week.

Wednesday 17 May

We start at the Platts. Martin thinks that S-L needs proper advice before deciding on adoption. Gail thinks she's already decided and is concerned that if other people hear of it, it will be taken out of their hands. They both agree to talk to S-L later, Gail during a break from the café and Martin by leaving work early.

Steve tells Vik that he's seen Pat who will start the partition at the weekend. Vik wants to talk about how they'll manage when they want to bring totty home, but Steve is subdued. He's thinking it was silly to make an enemy of Rich.

Post Office, and Norris (hooray!) asks Tyrone if he wants a cup of tea to go with his magazine. Tyrone explains that he's looking for a car. Norris warns him about the cost of garage fees and spares if you buy cheap, and waxes lyrical about his old Messerschmitt bubble. I had to fight the girls off till the wheel-nuts came loose on the Preston Bypass. How much have you got? £150. Perhaps you'd like some premium bonds?

Toyah serves Ken in the café and they talk about her forthcoming exams. She's very worried. Ken thinks she's been revising too hard and advises a break.

Emma sees Nita in the Rovers and says it was a shame neither of them got the job. Nita remarks that Curly may have more luck today, and tells Emma all about the Inverness post. Oops!

Gail arrives to talk to S-L and immediately starts in. When the baby comes... S-L says she won't be able to cope , won't have any friends, etc, etc. Gail thinks this is the root of the adoption wish, so suggests that she could give up work and look after the baby while S-L is at school. Then she'd still have her friends. Would that make her happy?

Tyrone catches Jack coming out of the bookies. He's put a fiver on a complicated quadruple bet and stands to make £10,000. Perhaps that's his answer, he needs £1,500 for a car (gone up tenfold under Norris' influence). They reminisce on Monica's racing career and Jack has an idea.

The factory girls are off to lunch at the Rovers when a strange woman arrives asking for Gwen Loveday. Janice keeps her talking while Gwen makes good her escape. She tries to find out if it's about money, but the woman gives nothing away. Janice puts on a good show, saying Gwen has left and owes her money too.

Betty praises Steve for not driving above 30mph. But he takes it the wrong way and points out that it is the law and he's a good citizen. Just because he's gone a bit astray in the past. His manner doesn't go down well with Betty and they exchange words.

Interval

In the Rovers, Steve and Vik discuss new staff. Curly goes over to talk to Emma and she tells him she knows all about the job, but leaves before he can explain himself. Bobbi and Geena are both looking for a flat. Hey, why don't they share?

Gwen and Janice are having a cuppa at Jim's. Janice tries to find out what was going on. Gwen keeps denying it but of course Janice can see through her recent actions. Did you owe enough to change your name, and your address? Gwen breaks down and confesses. Janice is very understanding and says they've all been there. But wasn't it good she won that money at bingo?

Bobbi and Geena put a sign in the Post Office window ( I think, but I don't understand why this would help). Anyway, Norris has noticed some flats, not that's he's looking, and don't tell Vera as he's very happy at the B&B but he doesn't like dogs and there's a flat above the salon, but it smells of hairspray. Too late, the girls are gone.

Gwen thinks what she owes is peanuts to the loan company and anyway, they're insured, and it's not like stealing from someone's purse. Janice isn't so sure, as she's been pursued for £50. She assures Gwen she won't tell Jim.

Norris is fending off Monica at the B&B table as he eats his digestives. Jack arrives. Why doesn't Monica have puppies? They'd get £500 each and she'd have about 6. But how will I find her a boyfriend? Take her to the racing stable. Tyrone isn't sure, he feels it's taking advantage of her.

Nita meets Curly in the pub. She got the Inverness job. He gets the drinks in as Emma arrives and tells her they're celebrating....for Nita. He explains that he would rather be here with her. Betty complains to Vik about his oppo (operator, thus implying she thinks he's Steve's boss).

Martin arrives home and Gail updates him on her chat with S-L. He takes it all very calmly. If S-L cried when she heard she could go back to school, then they'll definitely carry out Gail's plan. It'll mean they'll have to cut back on luxuries and she wouldn't have considered it if he hadn't had the promotion. Throughout this, Martin acts as of old, the supporting husband and father. Is this the turning point when he chooses Gail???

Vik tells Steve he shouldn't be upsetting Betty as it will be all round the street. Rich sticks his head round the office door. Jez wants to see Steve tomorrow and here's a visiting order. You'll know what it's about.

Friday 19 May
Sunday 21 May

For the first time since he joined the family Oscar the westie was left at the hairdresser on Saturday and some four hours later he was collected, cleaner, shorn and looking very westie like. Anyway he would not speak to any of us for some hours but did eventually relent after his afternoon walk. Now he is lying at my feet as I fire up the system for our Sunday evening visit to Weatherfield, courtesy of ITV and Cadburys Flake who are currently sponsoring activities on the Street.

Written by Peter Whalley Directed by Graham Wetherell

Action opens in the Street with Sally finding Geena Gregory and Bobbi Lewis sitting outside the salon waiting for Audrey to provide access to the flat. The window refers to "Audreys" which must be the name of the salon now. Sally spies Kev and asks he she can go and visit Alison in hospital. Kev has no objection. Sal's hair is starting to grow it should be noted. Audrey arrives, surprisingly, in a very expensive car. Now Alfie's pride and joy was an MGB as I recall and he left no money at all as his life insurance had expired just before he did. So how come Audrey can afford a BMW 5 series estate ('P' Reg for those interested) - I reckon council corruption might be a little far reaching. Audreh lets the girls into the flat and starts pointing out what they cannot do (anything except breathe - and certainly no persons of the opposite sex). They must also keep their rubbish separate. No noise either - Audrey has customers to consider downstairs.

Down the road Gail, Martin and SL are discussing the previous night - SL had to leave early. Candice arrives and confirms the rest of the evening was fairly boring. The girls go upstairs. Gail has decided the time has come to tell Roy she is leaving her job so that she can be a full time grandmother and that SL can have some sort of life. (Which is a great idea Gail but I think having some income might not be a bad idea).

Sally asks Rursie and Surphie to crayon a picture for Alison to cheer her up. Rosie (who struck me as being a new version of the devil child, but I could be wrong) refuses but Sophie proving she has a mind of her own at last agreed to do a picture. Both girls go upstairs (surprise, surprise - hopefully they will stay up there listening for music for a few years) so that Canny (typo - should be Danny but I rather like it) can express his view that the ex-wife going to see the pregnant new wife might just shock her into labour (well anything is better than being a Lib Dem I suppose).

At Roy's Rolls Hayley is telling Gail about their holiday on the Broads. "One of the best we have had" says Hayley, "Not had many" says Roy but eventually agrees it was one of the best of those they have had. Anyway Gail feels it is time to say good bye and this appears to cause Roy great distress, especially as she means now. Hayley and Gail both remind him that it is hardly new news but he still appears quite shaken (and anyway Gail I reckon that giving up work is a bad idea - have some time off and see what happens is my advice).

Jim is considering buying Kev's half share of the garage - he is still thinking about it whilst Gwen leafs through a paper. Jim reckons he should make an offer, once he has thought about it some more. Gwen holds her head in despair.

Natalie is back and looks a lot better as Betty observes. Betty asks about Jez - was the evidence forthcoming because of the reward that had been offered. Natalie observes that this cannot have been the case because it has not been mentioned and not a penny paid. Kev wanders in and asks for a chat. He needs to sell his half of the garage to help buy a house for him and Alison (don't rush into the deal Kev) and perhaps Natalie should know before someone else tells her? (Legally I doubt he can sell without her approval). Anyway she says that she came by the half share through her divorce and probably would be happy to sell her half as well. Kev tells her Jim is interested and is to pass on that her share is also available.

Sally arrives at Alison's bedside (Kev has warned Alison that Sally was on her way). Alison is bored - but is convinced the baby is a girl not a boy. Alison is worried about why Kev and Sal broke up - she must have loved him once. Sally looks uncomfortable but changes the subject saying that Kevin was good with the children. Alison acknowledges this but says she is going to do all the hard work.

Back at the Rovers Audreh is telling Natalie that she has let the flat to Geena and Bobbie. Natalie re-assures Audreh that Geena has heard securely attached. Anyway Gail can spy on them. On the other side of the Rovers Jim is still thinking about buying the garage. Jim will be the boss - but Kev has a lot more experience. Gwen is going mad. Hayley and Roy arrive. The latter is now very worried. He will have to advertise, interview, learn to work with someone else. Perhaps Hayley ...? She refuses to work in the Caff - working and living with Roy would be just a little too much.

In an anonymous bar Martin and Rebecca are catching up on events. This bar must be close to the hospital because Sally and Canny Danny wander in at the end of visiting hours. Sally fancies a cup of tea and a pastry. Danny spots Martin and tries to get Sally to go elsewhere but she is determined to not to rush back just yet - taking advantage of the gurls being (presumably) with Kev.

A quick advertising break seemingly dominated by dot.com advertising.

Martin calls across to Danny and introduces Rebecca to Sally. Martin explains that he needed to talk aver some things away from the hospital. Sally has been to see Alison. Sally had half-expected to see Martin in the hospital but he was in the restaurant. As Martin observes he has some secrets of his own.

Back at the Rovers Geena and Bobbie walk in as Audrey and Gail leave - pleasantries are exchanged. Steve wanders in and Natalie says she wants a few words in the back room (as yet she is unaware that someone other than Steve provided the vital evidence in getting Quigley locked up). In a booth Jim is still thinking about buying the garage - after all it would be quite a change - perhaps he should consult an accountant. Gwen reckons he has no intention of buying so Jim announces that he will be buying it. They depart.

Natalie is in the back room with Steve and they discuss the reward money. He will receive the £10k on the day that Jez gets sent down. Will this arrangement stand firm when the real nature of the source becomes clear in court? Or will another party decide to claim the money?

Alison has another visitor - Kev having returned the gurls can now visit her. Alison's padding looks all wrong I have to observe - far too high, although SL's has generally been fairly accurate. Alison recounts Sal's visit. Kev tells her he is going to sell the garage to provide a proper house. Alison looks even happier.

Reaching home Sal observes to Danny that any other person seeing Martin and Rebecca would put 2 and 2 together and get the wrong answer. Sally knows that Martin has a good wife at home but if other people saw him with Rebecca they might start talking. (Now bearing in mind that Sally has been a wronged woman you might think she would spot the signs but presumably awareness will dawn when she mentions the meeting to Gail in the next couple of episodes!!).

Kev visits Jim and Gwen who are eating. He is definitely selling and Jim is definitely buying so he is. All they need to do is sit down and agree a price and the final details. Kev departs and then turns back to tell Jim that Natalie wants to sell as well. So perhaps Jim would like to buy 100%? Kev departs and Jim realises that he is now going to have to do a lot more thinking as this changes the whole picture. Gwen is distraught at the effect of a further period of thinking! She wants him to buy it all.

Vik arrives in the Rovers - the week is showing a good improvement on the previous week - business is going well. In a booth Bobbie and Geena are planning a flat warming party. Danny wanders in to tell Martin that he needs to be more careful. Martin is fed up - he cannot remember half the lies he is telling and wants a way out.

At the Platt's Martin arrives as Candice departs. Gail lays into Martin - did he really need to go to work on both Saturday and Sunday. They had agreed to support SL and perhaps he should be at home. He retorts he is the only one earning. Gail says that she needs his support - why does he choose to be at work rather than at home?

Monday 22 May

Roy is snowed under by the morning rush since Gail has given up work and Toyah hasn't turned up. She does arrive, flustered because she overslept due to revising late into the previous night. She tries to do some work in the cafe but it is difficult. She confesses to Roy that she is dreading her first exam, which is on Friday. Roy lets her go home to revise. He puts up a notice in the cafe advertising for another assistant. Vera tells him that she would be ideally qualified for the position (having ascertained that the cafe is in an ideal position to monitor Jack's crossing patrol and the betting shop!)

Tyrone is excited at the prospect of Jim owning the garage, though Jim is not so sure now that he has found out about Natalie's plans to sell also. Luckily, the relative in Ireland who recently died has left all his money to Jim. Gwen wants to know how much money exactly, but all Jim knows is that it is a 'substantial amount'. He anticipates having to borrow more if he is to buy the whole garage business, but Gwen won't let anything dampen her mood.

On his day off, Martin is taking Gail and SL shopping for baby stuff. Of the three of them, only Gail looks excited and happy. SL thinks it is bad luck to buy things in advance - cos that's what Candice's mum told her, and Martin is just thinking about the damage to his wallet.

Roy interviews Vera (in his own, inimitable style) and on the question of whether 'the customer is always right' Vera forthrightly cites the example of Norris. She says he had a lot of funny ways when he first arrived at the B&B Vera soon put him right about what to expect from her. Roy says he will let her know about the job.

Jack tells Tyrone he has arranged for Monica to go to the kennels that evening. Jack teases Tyrone about whether they will see Maria, the kennel maid.

The Platts return home laughing and unloading the car. The arrival has not gone unnoticed by Blanche. She goes into the Kabin and launches into a tirade to Rita about how the family should be ashamed, not flaunting their pregnant teenager. What she has failed to notice ... or has she? ... is that Audrey is also in the shop, round the corner talking to Norris. Audrey does not let Blanch go on for too long before she challenges her. Norris's attempts to restore calm are quite futile. Blanche lays into Audrey, saying that with the example of her family, SL didn't stand a chance. Audrey retaliates with Deirdre having been in prison and Tracy getting into drugs. Blanch defends Tracy as having made a mistake, and Audrey says that is just what SL has done. Much too late, Rita calls time on the slanging match and chucks Blanche out. Rita takes Audrey for a drink in the Rovers and tries to keep her calm and sensible. Audrey, however, is upset and wonders how many more of their neighbours are thinking what Blanche is saying out loud.

Steve, Pat and Vik discuss the building work on the health centre which is to start on Wednesday. Steve plans to work on the site during the day and for the taxi firm at night. Steve blags himself and Vik an invitation to Geena's flat-warming party this Friday.

Jack tells Roy that Vera disapproves of fried food and sticky buns, and warns him that if he gives her the job, Roy will find himself running a health food cafe before long. Wisely, Roy consults another source about Vera. Norris's verdict is that she is old-school, high cholesterol, high fat - but more than adequate for basic cuisine. Satisfied, Roy offers the job to Vera. She is delighted to accept, and delighted to leave Natalie in the lurch by resigning from the cleaning at the pub. At least Jim has given Natalie some good news - he will be putting in an offer for the garage after he has talked to the bank.

Audrey moans to Gail about Blanche. Gail says she is past caring what others think - her priority is Sarah. Gail points out that Audrey brought her up without a father, and Sarah's baby will also do alright. This seems to give Audrey food for thought.

Gail goes to the Rovers, leaving Hayley to sit with Sarah. Hayley gives her a baby shawl which she has knitted. Thoughtfully, it is in yellow. Sarah bursts into tears on opening it. Hayley is concerned, but SL explains that she is very scared about what will happen and how to cope. She is worried she will get things wrong. Hayley reassures her that plenty of help will be on hand, and that as long as Sarah loves the baby everything will be OK.

Tyrone is disappointed that they didn't see Maria when they took Monica to be mated. Jack encourages Tyrone to take the dog to the Red Rec - after all, Maria walks her dog there as well. Tyrone goes, and sees Maria through the trees. His face falls as he sees she is arm in arm with another fella.

Gary has started driving the taxi during the daytime, while the twins are at the nursery. He is glad to be earning a bit of money again.

Update written by Helen Johns.

Well, what can I say? The Street is getting better and better these days. I can't do it justice without repeating loads of dialogue. Let's just say that it was a pleasure to watch. Also, these days it is a pleasure to write the update - and there have been a few times in the last few months when it was more of a chore. See you all next week. Helen.

Wednesday 24 May

Jack is in the café asking if he's upset Roy. When he's had a hard day at work, he likes to go to the café, knowing it's a Vera-free zone. Now Roy's taken her on. Roy says she was the best candidate for the job. Just then she enters, and warns Jack not to have a fry-up. He was of course, but changes his order to orange juice, bran flakes and semi-skimmed milk.

Rebecca goes into Martin's office and he suggests that they spend the whole night together on Friday. He'll sort something out with Danny. She looks delighted.

Tyrone is staring miserably at his sandwich in the café. He's seen Maria with another bloke on the Red Rec.

Bobbi is in the Rovers inviting people to her party. Linda overhears and asks Leanne why she wasn't invited. She goes to sit with the girls and talks about the party. She's very bitchy and backs Bobbi into a corner so she has to invite her. Then she turns it down.

Audrey glumly asks Alma why people enjoy seeing others suffer. Alma refers to Blanche, and Audrey says she was just saying what everyone else was thinking. She's seen it all before and is sorry that things haven't changed for the better. She remembers how it was when she was pregnant at 18 after having Stephen and no man around. Perhaps it's her fault that this happened to Sarah-Lou, she didn't set a good example to her kids after all.

Debs and Natalie are in the café when Vinny arrives. Debs suggests he should be playing with his building site chums and Natalie is cross that she's so rude.

Danny can't believe what Martin is asking him. Martin has it all planned: they'll go to the stag do, Danny can go home, but say that it was better for Martin to sleep at Tommo's. He'll do the same for him one day. It's not the sort of favour I'll need, says Danny. He finally agrees, but doesn't put much faith in Martin's promise that he won't ask again.

Audrey is looking pensive at Gail's. You'd better sit down, I'm going to tell you the truth about your father.

Interval

He was called Ted Page and was just a fella. A very nice one, but I didn't really know him and I really want to tell you about me. You know I had Stephen at 16 and had to give him away. I thought if I got pregnant again and got married (she said it in that order), then I could get him back. Gail wonders how she thought this could have worked, but she was upset, angry and confused. Audrey really fancied Norman Jones but he wasn't interested. But his best friend, Ted, worshipped her, and she knew he would offer to marry her if he knew she was pregnant. Gail asks if she loved him. She liked him a lot. At least I wasn't an accident then. Oh no, you were planned. Well, I was part of a plan, for you to get Stephen back. Not the best start in life.

Nat is watching Vinny on the building site. He goes over and they agree to meet at a restaurant that night. When he goes back, the lads applaud.

Gail wonders what happened, as clearly the plan didn't work. Audrey and Ted had gone to the pictures and she was going to tell him she was pregnant. But when she looked at him, she realised that she didn't love him and shouldn't spend the rest of her life with him. So she told him they were finished instead. She didn't see him again as he was in the army and then moved away. Her father was still furious but this time she was determined to keep the baby and he died before Gail was born. She doesn't know how Gail turned out so well. Everything good about you is from your father. I'm so proud of you. They hug. Then she gives Gail a photo of Ted.

Tyrone meets Maria in the park. He asks where her boyfriend is. She doesn't understand and then twigs that he must mean her brother. Tyrone beams.

Audrey thought Gail would be angry. Can you forgive me? Gail says that she thought she was doing the right thing at the time. The family gets itself into a mess but always pulls through. She's not interested in finding her dad and returns the photo.

At the restaurant, Natalie asks Vinny where he's been working. He's done a bit of casual labouring but was mostly unemployed until the health centre job. She feels bad about that, but he enjoys the building trade and has no regrets.

Martin tells Gail about the stag night. He's busy giving elaborate reasons why he has to stay over but she's not really paying attention and finally he notices. She tells him she found out about her Dad. Maybe he shouldn't go? No, he deserves a break. Martin has a strange look on his face: guilt, change of heart, realising how he'll hurt Gail?

On the park bench, Tyrone and Maria agree they'd better get home, but are reluctant to do so. She tells him she's going to the Lake District for the weekend if he's wondering why she's not in the park. Perhaps they could meet on Monday? At dinner time? Hooray! They both leave happy.

Natalie makes a little speech to Vinny. They never really had a proper try, there was always something in the way, first Des, then Tony. She misses him and would like to give it another try. She thinks they could have a future. But Vinny doesn't see it that way. He thinks they gave it their best shot and there is no point in trying again.

Friday 26 May
Sunday 28 May

Back from a brief break in time to bring you the events in Weatherfield tonight. Sadly this means I missed Friday night and the events at the party as well as Danny letting Martin's moggy out of the bag. Is there any regular viewer who can provide updates on Friday evenings for the benefit of regular viewers who miss the odd episode (even today not everyone is sufficiently web enabled to visit csvu).

This evening's episode was brought to your screens courtesy of ITV, Cadbury's Marble who provided the sponsorship and it was: written by: John Stephenson and directed by: Brian Mills

Maxine emerges from the Peacock residence seriously concerned that Ashley is missing and has not returned home at all overnight (hardly surprising she did lock him out) and she heads to the salon to tell Audrey she cannot possibly work whilst Ash is missing. Max lets slip that there was a party upstairs. Audrey re-assures her that he will turn up but she insists on departing even though Leanne has turned up for a trim. As Max emerges she sees Ash coming out of Debs house and immediately she jumps to the wrong conclusion as to where he spent the night. Max says she hates him and drags him indoors.

Sally is giving Danny an earful for covering up for Martin. [Danny mate - give up on the pixie, she gives you a bad time all the time and has the worst haircut I have ever seen]. Danny wishes now that Martin had never used him. Danny brings Sally up to date on the Rebecca / Martin story and Sally thinks

Geena and Bobbie are putting the numerous empties in the builder's skip. They reckon the boys will have the worst hangovers. Steve is having difficulties raising Vik who seems unimpressed by the false talons he has "grown" overnight. Steve realises that neither of them are fit to drive and summons Gary to do some work. Steve admits that neither of them scored.

Max throws Ash and his clothes out of the house and does not listen to his protestations of innocence - she reckons they are finished. She returns to the salon where Debs is telling Audrey the real events. When Max arrives she gives Debs a piece of her mind over them spending the night together and seducing her husband. Vik pops in to ask how the nails can be removed.

Spider and Toyah arrive in the Rovers. Leanne (whose hair looks totally unaltered despite her visit to Audreys - you wuz robbed luv) greets her sister with "Happy Birthday" - she is now 18 and can legally drink. {I think I have lost a year somewhere - R'Toyota was only sitting her GCSE's last year wasn't she and now she is in the middle of her 'A' levels}. Her first legal drink is an orange juice - lots of revising to do. Toyah and Spider have a brief disagreement.

Mike, Linda and Mark arrive, the first orders fizzy water for the other two as they are off on a driving lesson. Audrey arrives and complains about the atmosphere in the salon. She then asks Geena about the party and decides on an inspection in the afternoon.

The gurls are eating ice cream whilst Danny and Sally have a conversation in the hall. Sally has to go and see Gail - she has a right to know. Danny tries to warn her off but is unsuccessful. They try to be careful over what they say but Rosie (or possibly Sophie) asks what they are talking about and is told nothing. Sadly most kids will then keep on listening!! Danny is to take them to the park.

There were some adverts but apart from the one that tries to suggest you use a mobile phone in a hospital (strongly not recommended) there was nothing of any interest.

Linda and Mark drive off in Mike's Audi. She warns him that he is in charge. Linda reckons he had a good time at the party - yes responds Mark all too young for you. Linda says she goes for what she fancies and caresses his leg.

Audrey's flat inspection is successful but Geena is reminded as to future conduct. Ash arrives and wants a quiet word. Sadly Max is unacommodating and their discussion is in the open with Max calling Debs his floozy and a tart. Audrey tries to get the staff to see sense. Debs points out that Ashley is hardly attractive as he is not a real man.

Gail is surprised but glad to see Gail. It has been hard over the last few weeks and SL has gone to stretch her legs. Sally says that she wants Gail to know that she is always there to help and Gail seems glad of this. Gail wants a chat - it is the first bit of peace she has had in weeks and before Sally can say anything Gail points out how wonderful Martin has been in this difficult period. Sally changes her mind and decides that to tell Gail at this point was not a good thing (bad choice Sally).

Tyrone catches the world experienced Steve and asks how he should treat a woman as he is going on a First date and wants some tips. Steve gives the matter some thought and decides to tell Tyrone that "She must not have her way with him on the first date - she won't respect him." Tyrone looks confused.

Danny sends the gurls into the Kabin and catches Martin on his way home. He tells Martin that the beans are spilt and that Sally insisted on going to talk to Gail and she is doing it at this very minute. Martin's face does not change. Martin enters his home and finds that Sally has gone and that Gail is sitting quietly, drinking tea and says that Sally has visited and told Gail some things ... Martin is expecting the worst but Gail points out how lucky they are to have friends who are willing to help them. Over the road Sally is telling Danny what happened. She is hardly being a best friend to Gail.

Steve, Vik and Ash are discussing the latter's situation. Steve and Vik talk him out of sending a bunch of flowers and convince him that being under the thumb is not a good idea.

The driving lesson is going well and they turn into a park and where Linda stops in the trees. A rather nice cavalier King Charles spaniel and owner walk by. Linda demonstrates her needs by grabbing Mark and kissing him with an inch of insensibility. Mark does not understand what is going on. Linda just wants a bit of fun and tells him to accept it. Then she drives them back to Mark's flat - although risky she is willing to attempt it.

Back at the salon Audrey tries to achieve a peace settlement. Debs denies sleeping with Ashley and anyway she does not find him attractive. Audrey expects Max to have more faith in Ashley. Max accepts she has been a bit hard on Ash.

Max sees Ash coming out of the Rovers and tries to put things right - she has decided he can come home. Ashley is not coming home until Max apologies - he wants her to say she is sorry but she refuses and the episode ends with her crying.

I suppose the Linda/Mark/Mike triangle is being re-ignited to achieve the exit of Mark, sadly in my opinion as I felt he might have a long term future - although perhaps he is simply not ruthless enough - whilst Linda is.

Wife's view is that Sally should have told Gail - and I am sure best friends would not have been hindered by Gail's paean of praise of Martin.

Sadly the writers still seem to have trouble with Maxime's status as a married woman - another poor story line but Ashley has to learn that women never apologise for being right (or even wrong, but that never happens anyway).

And is the Spider / Toyota romance heading for the rocks already? Well yes I know it is but is this the first sign of the pupil overtaking the teacher?

Monday 29 May

Martin calls on Danny to find out why Sally hadn't told Gail about the affair. Danny explains that Sally couldn't hurt Gail at that time - but was giving him a rough time instead. Danny says that he will not provide any more alibis for Rebecca and Martin - his relationship with Sally is too important to risk it.

Gwen moans to Jim about not going out on the Bank Holiday, especially when he is rich. Jim is adamant that the whole of the £10,000 will be used to buy the garage business. Gwen sulks and tells Jim to 'Get a Life!' and he retorts that he is getting a life - a secure one for them both.

In the Kabin, Maxine exchanges sharp words with Debs, blaming her for ruining her marriage.

Vera reminisces about past Bank Holidays, when they went on bus trips to the seaside. Jack is more interested in a trip to the races. A nervous Tyrone prepares to go to meet Maria. Vera is slightly miffed that it's the first she's heard of Tyrone's date, yet Jack knows all about it.

Vik gets a call to take Aunt Maya home from work in the taxi. Steve tells Ashley this is another example of women taking advantage. Ashley is missing Maxine, though, and wonders if he should make it up with her. The boys are adamant that he must put his foot down now, and insist that he will be going out with the boys every so often.

Maria and Tyrone meet in the park; both have brought their dogs. Monica growls at Maria when Tyrone is trying to get them to be friendly. He nervously spends all his time talking about work and cars, until Maria asks him about other girlfriends he has. Of course, he tells her he has had loads of girlfriends - but right now is concentrating on his career. Monica climbs up in between them just as Tyrone tries to put his arm around Maria.

Bobbi and Geena are keen to give Maxine the benefit of their advice. They say that she must lay down the ground rules now and show him who's the boss.

In the pub, Gail insists that Sally and Danny join them - much to Sally's discomfort. When Gail is at the bar, Martin thanks Sally for not saying anything. She makes it clear how upset she is with his behaviour and warns him to stop the affair. Linda crows about how well her driving lessons are going. Mike is pleased, but Mark just seems embarrassed. The three boys, Ashley, Vik and Steve, line up on one side of the bar and stare at the girls across the room, Maxine, Geena and Bobbi.

Break.
Buy a car. Get cable TV. Buy cat food. Go to New Zealand. Stop child abuse. Visit a zoo. Use a bank.

Geena and Bobbi, Vikram and Steve line up face to face, looking like boxing seconds with their champions. As they exchange words and sarcastic comments, Maxine and Ashley sidle off into the corner and confide that they have missed each other. They go all gooey and go off together after kissing. The boys decide to ask Geena and Bobbi out, but the girls would rather move furniture round in their flat. 'OK, then' the boys agree, lamely.

Mark and Linda arrange another 'driving lesson' but it is clear they have other things on their mind. Martin goes off to prepare the lunch, leaving Gail to smugly remark how spoilt she is. Sally sits there looking like she's sucking on a lemon.

In SL's bedroom, Candice talks about her relatives embarrassing her in front of her boyfriend. She says she isn't allowed to take boys into her room since ..... Sarah Lou is all too aware how her own situation has affected Candice's mum. SL is surprised when she realises that Candice hasn't actually done 'it' yet.

Maria doesn't exactly behave like a kennel maid when Monica growls at her. In fact, she looks a bit scared of her. Nevertheless, she and Tyrone agree to meet again on Wednesday. Maria kisses Tyrone on the cheek as she leaves; something which reduces Tyrone to gaping open-mouthed.

Sally tells Danny she is going to see Rebecca. He strongly urges her not to. She takes no notice.

At home, Tyrone experiments with sitting close to Vera, and is frustrated that Monica is not bothered in the slightest. Vera reminisces about her and Jack's courtship, and advises Tyrone to keep the romance going - even after he has got what he is after!

Candice thinks the babygro is very sweet, and looks at all the stuff Martin and Gail have bought for the baby. They talk about what SL will do, like playing with dolls with it if it is a girl, or watching it play football if it is a boy - and also checking out all their mates and not letting them go clubbing. SL asks Candice to be its Auntie. Candice is thrilled, and thinks that SL having a baby could turn out to be a right laugh. SL suddenly looks very young and very mature at the same time.

Sally tracks down Rebecca in the hospital corridor. She tells Rebecca to leave Martin alone and stop hurting her best friend. Rebecca at first tries to deny it, but it is obvious Sally knows everything. Sally accuses Rebecca of being selfish and not thinking about Martin's family, and deliberately intending to break up his marriage. Sally orders Rebecca to end the affair immediately - or else she will. Rebecca is visibly shaken by the encounter and cries as Sally stomps away. Credits.

Wednesday 31 May

The Platts are having breakfast. Gail asks if Martin will be on nights this week as she wants to book a meal for his birthday on Friday. Martin says that will be nice and checks his diary. Oh look, he's working. He'd forgotten it was his birthday and swapped with someone on holiday. There won't be anyone else to cover it. They agree to go on Sat instead.

A taxi pulls up to the corner shop and Auntie Maya gets out. Vik suggests she might like to settle her bill now. A great sense of humour, just like your father. Pick me up at 8.

Debs and Duggie are watching Nat and Vinny who are at opposite ends of the street. They comment that Vinny didn't like that guy on the site whistling at her, and he didn't like her welcoming a strange man into the Rovers.

Martin gleefully tells Rebecca he can take her out for his birthday on Friday. But she's not happy and tells him about the visit from Sally. How did she find out? Martin explains she discovered the stag do was fake and so Danny had to tell her everything to get himself out of trouble. Rebecca is furious that he's known about this since Saturday and didn't tell her.

Kevin and Alison are looking at housing particulars round her hospital bed. They can't afford much with their money from the garage. But maybe they could get a cheaper one that needed work and Kevin could do it up at weekends.

Martin apologises and tries to explain it was difficult to get in touch. Rebecca points out this was precisely why she bought them mobile phones. Then he tries to say that as Sally hadn't gone through with her threat, he thought it would blow over and didn't want to panic her. This doesn't wash either. So instead, she got a dressing-down in the corridor where anyone could have overheard (but as no-one's noticed their canoodling and indiscreet conversations, this didn't seem likely). She wonders what Sally will do to split them up but Martin suggests she's all talk as she hasn't done anything yet. Rebecca says he'd better hope he's right.

Alison would like to call the baby Emma Cheryl (after her sister) if it's a girl, and Jake or Joe for a boy. Kevin suggests she might want to tell her parents about the pregnancy. But Alison says that Kevin and the baby are her family now. All they've ever done is run her down and she doesn't want anything to do with them.

Vik is at the shop to collect Maya. She wants to go to the dry-cleaners to collect her curtains, call in on Mrs. Aziz for an hour and then he can run her back. Vik looks to Dev desperately for support but doesn't get any.

Tyrone is briefing Monica on how to act during his date. There's no reason for her to be jealous, dog-love and woman-love are different. Maria arrives and they go for a walk.

Natalie returns to the Rovers with the stranger. He's called Dave, they've had pizza and wine and Nat's enjoyed herself. Vinny overhears all this and leaves with a face like thunder. Dave leaves shortly after and Nat and Debs exchange smug looks.

Danny and Sally are in a booth. Danny tells her he disapproves of what she's done, but she stands by her actions as Gail is her friend. Vinny has moved to another booth and Duggie joins him. He advises him that Nat won't be free forever. He should either do something about getting her back or forget the whole thing and leave her to it.

Maria suggests they sit down before they join the M6. Tyrone distracts Monica with a squeaky toy, but just as he's got his arm round Maria, she brings it back and won't chase it again. Instead, she sits and whines at them as they kiss.

Interval

Eileen is doing her nails while Vik tells Steve about his problems with Auntie Maya. It's costing them £4 a day. Steve is shocked she's not paying and says Vik needs to sort it now. If other people hear of it they'll all want free rides.

Other people in the park are staring at Maria and Tyrone so he suggests it's time they leave. She looks fed up.

Sally answers the door to an angry Martin. He tells her that was a nasty thing to do. Not compared to what you're doing. Why didn't she talk to him, Rebecca was mortified. Sally suggests he should be glad she didn't tell Gail. But Martin says it's none of her business. She can't do anything about it because they love each other. Sally poo-poos this and says he should be thinking of his family first. Martin says he is, it's because of Sarah-Lou that he's still with Gail. Sally knows nothing about it. But she thinks she does, she's been through it. Oh yes, was that your fling with Chris or Greg. That was putting your kids first wasn't it? Danny arrives and Martin leaves. He tells Sally he did warn her, but Sally still insists she's doing the right thing.

Tyrone is recounting his trials in the park to Jack and Vera. Jack says Monica was just trying to stop him from going too far. Oh yes, says Vera, they have a sixth sense you know. Auntie Bertha, her collie, whined all night before her Billy died. That was what killed him, says Jack in an aside. Worse than a nagging wife, comments Tyrone. I'd swap son. I heard that Jack. Anyway, why don't you invite her round here for your courting? No hanky-panky. You can stay down here and I'll cook you a special tea. Jack thinks Vera just wants to check her out, but Tyrone doesn't mind. After Vera's gone, he says, no hanky-panky but better than nothing. Jack says that after 40 years, those words might be music to his ears.

Eileen asks if the fare is going to the Blue Velvet Sauna or is that just a landmark? No problem luv, we all have to make a living. Maya calls and asks for Vikram.

Danny suggests to Sally that she might be acting this way with Martin because of Kevin's affair. But she doesn't still love him. No, but has she forgiven him? Perhaps she still resents him. Sally maintains she doing this for Gail, but Danny advises her to think carefully about her reasons. She'll have to face the consequences of whatever she stirs up.

Maya is waiting for her taxi outside the shop.

Leanne asks why Mark is being funny with her. He says he's not and everything is fine. Vinny apologies to Nat for staring at her earlier. He'll leave her alone...if that's what she wants. Oh, and who was that guy, they looked friendly. It was Dave, a brewery rep, showing her a bar they'd done up. And was the flirting for his benefit? Nat is exasperated, he should make his mind up. Leanne says she'll tell Mike off for working Mark too hard. And as for getting him to teach that bimbo how to drive. Mark bristles and says she's not a bimbo and he can handle it. He leaves and Leanne murmurs, but can I. Vinny asks Nat if they can start again.

Maya arrives at the taxi office. Eileen says she'll check with the driver and covers the mike so Maya can't see she's not really talking to anyone. `Vernon' has switched his radio off and no-one else is free. She could get one in an hour, has she any shopping to do? Maya explains she could walk in 30 mins. Could she call another firm from there? Against company rules, why doesn't she get the bus? Maya leaves in disgust. Steve calls for a fare and Eileen tells him there's nothing as she finishes her paper doll.

Natalie has taken Vinny into the back room and asks him what's changed. He needed time to think and didn't really know what he wanted. But he's missed her and wants her back. Now she's not sure, he's been difficult and she can't just warm up again. They go round in circles like this for a while and then Vinny suggests something to help. He kisses her lightly on the lips but she'll need more persuading than that. You always were a difficult woman he says as he gives her a big snog.
