Sunday 2 September

Well then extra episodes again this week. A busy time for the Street which is presumably revelling in the naming of Stan's funeral as the top Soap moment. It was nice to see Stan and Hilda in action again earlier in the week and perhaps regrettable that so many of the top moments came from the last couple of years but I suppose inevitable. Did remind me that Corrie was originally driven by characters and not issues.

Written by Jayne Hollinson and directed by Tony Prescott.

Emma is wired up to the machines and is suffering another contraction. Norman is with her and she starts crying, thinking the baby is lost. The contractions are still coming every twenty minutes which is not good news - they might stop of their own accord but it is rare although the drip may help. The heartbeat is strong. Emma starts blaming herself - not because of the accident but because she did not want the baby when she first heard - she thought her life had ended - she was not sure and feels that is the reason. But Norman re-assures her and she admits she could not face losing the baby now.

Max and Ashley are talking to Fred about Eve who has asked for time to thinks things over. Fred is reviewing his past relationships - only Maureen said yes and that did not last long.

At the Duck Egg's Maria is serving Tyrone some muesli prior to taking him out for his morning run - but as Jack observes he will not keep two women happy on that sort of breakfast and Tyrone eyes Jack's fry up lovingly. Maria is determined she is going to get him fit (and is that fry up good for Jack's heart anyway?).

Maria and Todd accelerate off with Tyrone and Monica following. Monica is going faster than Tyrone who sits down after about 5 yards. Eventually they take off around the block a few more times.

Blanche and Emily are getting the latest news from Charly and Matt. Emily offers to help get some clothes for Emma because they departed for the hospital with nothing.

Hayley is telling Roy about the prison and always being under observation. Roy tells her it is over now but Hayley goes on about the other inmates. It seems that yesterday was a bit of a strain when there is knock at the door - Wayne and Sheila have arrived. Wayne gets a huge hug and Hayley departs to get dressed.

At the hospital Norman is sitting in the corridor when Emily arrives. Norman found it hard to imagine when he first heard that Emma was pregnant but when he saw the scan he knew there were three of them - but now ... he starts crying but Emily provides comfort as we see Emma sleeping through the window.

Linda and Mike are walking along the Street and she says how nice it was to eat together the previous evening. Deviously Mike agrees but refuses to allow her to move back into the same bedroom. He says he wants to take it slow. Max spots them and decides to give Linda a piece of her mind and calls her a gold-digging cow for telling Eve about Fred's arrangement with Duggie. Max asks Ash why he did not support her - he points out that she said enough for both of them! Fred goes off for a walk.

The runners return - Todd and Maria first with Tyrone and Monica just behind. Tyrone wants a pint and some crisps - without a shower.

Eve finds Fred resting on a wall. She has never met anyone as pig headed or as presumptuous as Fred - and indeed she has been thinking about it all night. Or as kind and considerate. What he did for her - was rather like Sir Walter Raleigh laying down his coat for the queen. He is her Walter Raleigh and providing he promises never to do anything like that again then the answer is yes - providing he will still have her (was there any doubt?).

After the break they go into the Rovers and Eve wants to know if they are telling people. They agree that they are and Fred immediately makes an announcement to the entire pub (including Audrey and Rita, former potential partners of Fred) of their new status. Rita offers immediate congratulations, but Audrey looks are far less generous. Ashley could not have stood his long face any longer and will be the best man. Duggie offers drinks on the house and offers Eve a proper job - she is a good barmaid. Eve takes a minute to talk to Linda. They call a truce as Linda apologises - but Eve is glad she spoke out or they would not be getting married. Linda invites her round to the flat.

Wayne and Sheila are going to the cinema but she apologises for not immediately telling the truth. She is missing Alex - she knows he is a bad lot but she has never been on her own before. She promises she will look after Wayne and indeed he can come and visit regularly (anyone else think that Sheila would get on well with Kev - he likes blondes remember). Roy tells Hayley that might have ruined their chances of fostering - but they have each other and that was all that was important before.

Norman brings back some sandwiches but Emma has some good news - she has not had a contraction and it should have been ten minutes before - the doctor considers this good news.

Max arrives having got the message about Fred and Eve but is still moaning about Eve's earlier comments. Audrey asks why Ashley did not talk Fred out of it - but Ash stands up for Fred and it nothing to do with Audrey. Emily and Blanche arrive in the Rovers - little good news. Blanche has another go at Max and she and Ash head off for the hospital as Max realises how serious it is.

Fred has got a wedding appointment for Tuesday - the wedding is in the Dales. Hotel is on Fred and Mike and Linda accept invitations.

Max arrives at the hospital and Norman tries to re-assure her that it was nothing to do with the events of yesterday. Max says she will never forgive herself. Max has wished that Emma was not pregnant and it was her instead.

At the Duckies Jack gets a can whilst Tyrone has a can and a butty - just after his tea. Maria sounds off again. Maria and Vera depart to the Rovers (Vera has to be helped off the sofa). Once they are gone Jack points out that if he had listened to Vera telling him to take it a bit easier then maybe he would not have suffered from his problems over the years. At the Rovers Vera gives Maria some similar advice - telling her to nag less and let Tyrone think that getting fit is his own idea.

At A&E both Emma and Norman are asleep. The doctor wakes Emma - she has not had a contraction for eight hours - indeed now it is dark. The doctor tells her to wake Norman so that they can both hear the news - they will keep her in overnight for some further blood tests but if they are clear then she can go home in the morning. They are both very happy that the baby is safe. It is unusual for contractions to stop - but they do sometimes. The doctor gives them a scan picture of the baby.

Tyrone and Jack arrive in the Rovers as well and both Tyrone and Maria apologise to each other. Tyrone orders an orange juice but Maria says he can have a pint.

Max and Ash arrive from the hospital with good news - which soon spreads around the Rovers. Meanwhile Fred arrives for a quiet word with Audrey. He does not want her to be unhappy - he wants to be good friends with her. But she cannot stay friends - she must tell a friend that he is making a mistake - she knows he is heading for disaster.

And that's that for tonight.

Well thank goodness that is over. I really don't like the themed programmes (as I have mentioned before). This has been very exhausting. It is now approx an hour and a half after the end of the second programme. We now have further episodes on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday! Janette and I negotiating on who does what!!

Good night.

Wednesday 5 September

Mark tells Audrey he hates Linda. She thinks he's got a funny way of showing it. Don't tell Mike, he asks. You're as bad as she is. No, you're worse. You're his son. But Mark knows this, that's why he went away before. He tells Audrey about the affair and calls Linda a scheming manipulative bitch. Mike needs to get rid of her fast before it's too late. Audrey thinks she's probably telling Mike about Mark's encore right now. He begs her again not to say anything to Mile, just as he arrives.

Ash sees Fred and tries again to get him to talk to Eve. You don't just fall out of love because of a row. Fred wonders if she ever did love him. Maybe it was just his money after all. Ash doesn't think he really believes that. But Fred doesn't have much else to offer a woman. Ash tells him he's the only thing stopping the wedding. He reminds him of his words of advice when he got married. No matter how hard it gets, the important thing is to stay together.

Mark tells Mike that Audrey saw him kissing Linda. He's so sorry, but can't explain. He still meant everything he said earlier. Maybe Linda was just trying to prove she could still have him. Mike thinks she wanted him to catch them. He won't let her get the two of them fighting again. He assures Mark that he hasn't blown it and is glad he's back. Linda has poisoned him against Mark for too long. Audrey reminds them that it took Alma's death to get them back together. They mustn't let that little madam spoil it. Then she leaves. Mike thinks Linda's laughing at them. But this time she's the one to go. He asks Mark to wait.

Eve is furiously packing when Fred arrives. They shout about Audrey and why he's taken so long to after her. He was confused and a thickhead and asks to be allowed to explain.

Linda is also packing when Mike arrives. She shuts the door on him. He says he knows about Mark and she's out of there if he has to drag her out. She tells him that ranting and raving won't change anything as he bangs on the door and tells her it's over.

Eve and Fred are now calm and sitting on the sofa. He'd given up hope of finding the happiness he had with Sybil. Then he met her. He admits there was a moment when he wondered what he was letting himself in for. When she walked away it was like history repeating itself and he couldn't face her saying it was all over. But now he realises he doesn't want to regret not asking her back. She apologises too. She was angry with herself. She'd been fine without fellas but let herself get swept off her feet. She should have seen the thing with Audrey. Fred explains she never felt the same about him. But with Eve, it all clicked into place. So the feelings he'd had for Audrey didn't seem important, and that's why he didn't tell her. It's you I want. Maybe it isn't too late. Are we back on then? If my suit isn't too creased.

Mark is in the car when he hears Linda shouting at Mike. He's frog-marching her into the car and slaps her when she won't get in. Ash sees this all from the steps. Mark is worried this will give Mike another heart attack. Mike tells him to get that little whore out of my sight.

Interval

Ryan and John are still at the bar and tell Fred he's had a lucky escape. but they're being a bit previous. Eve arrives in all her finery. The registrar says he needs to start. Where's Linda? Ash says she's poorly. Max steps in as maid of honour and also lends Eve her bracelet, as she's missing something borrowed. The ceremony finally takes place and Frederick Handel Elliott marries Eve Margaret Sykes. Kisses, applause and hugs. Fred tells Ash they've both got a gorgeous wife now.

The lads go out front and look forward to Xmas, now they've got a big fat Santa. Ryan thinks about half an hour with that Maxine bird.

Eve is packing again while Fred admires her from the sofa. She's worried about Linda. Fred says all she needs to worry about is getting that case shut. But as he won't tell her where they're going for the honeymoon she's had to pack for all weathers. She finds a box from Ash and Max, with a black lace babydoll nightie. At least they don't think we're past it! And there's a black satin thong for Fred. He wonders what to do with it. They look forward to some grand times together.

Max and Ash are drinking outside when Mike goes past. She asks about Linda and he says she had to rush home on important business, then leaves. Ash tells her about the row he saw and that Mike hit her. He didn't want Eve finding out.

Mike is now with Mark. They discuss what happened and agree Mike did the right thing and they're glad Linda's gone. Mark will drive them back home.

The couple arrive at the car. Fred sees Mike and wonders where he's been. Mike explains they had an argument and he's divorcing Linda. She's gone, car's gone and I don't expect to see either of them again. Fred's sorry to hear it. Mike says Linda is scum and Fred should get rid of the mother as soon as he can. They're both cut from the same cloth. Eve joins them and Fred quickly tells her that Linda has a tummy upset and has gone to the doctors. Mike doesn't deny it. Mike thanks Mark for giving him a second chance. He and Adam are all he has now. Fred asks Ash to call in on Linda and tells him about the split.

They leave in a cream Daimler. They're going to Venice and then a cruise round the Mediterranean. Ash tells Max about Mike and Linda as they go upstairs. They find the Baldwin's room open and go inside where there's clothes strewn everywhere. Linda clearly left in a hurry.

Thursday 6 September

Well, you've got me again. I really think the Street has gone for overkill, by the end of this week we will have endured 3.5 hours worth. In the UK we also had a special edition of "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire" on Tuesday night, the contestants were the cast of Corrie competing for various charities. David, (who plays Roy Cropper) won £64,000 and was top banana.

Last night's episode opened with Maria and Jason returning from a jog whilst Tyrone exits the Duckies. The joggers fix to do it all again tomorrow. Tyrone has an apple. Fiz is passing by and remarks that it's all wrong for men, they should have bacon butties and she'll see him at dinner. Across the street Mike Baldwin drives up using Linda's car, the garage lads can't resist a "Wife know you've got the car?" Max and Audrey are on their way to the salon. Max tells Audrey that Mike and Linda had a fight and he ended up with a grazed face but she left all her stuff in the hotel bedroom. Max confided that they had brought Linda's stuff back with them. Audrey comments that it's no-one's business but this is overheard by Norris as he passes.

At the factory the girls mutter that Mike seems to be eating his underpants if his mood is anything to go by. Janice asks him "How was the Wedding" he retorts "Why do you want to know" she responds "It's a girlie thing and is Linda around?" Mike replies "No, and I don't think she will be". Max arrives carrying Linda's things which she hands to Mike whilst asking "Linda OK?" There's no response other than "Got work to do".

Gail meets Martin who's looking smarter. She asks if they enjoyed the film, he starts to say "yes" but then admits that he and Sally went for a drink instead. Curly drives past as Emma is standing on the pavement clutching a tin of paint and other decorating paraphernalia He demands to know what's she's doing and isn't laughing when he realises she intends some DIY. He says he'll carry the stuff home and he's doing the decorating. Ashley is nearby and Curly asks to put to one side a "Cumberland Ring (sausage)", apparently Emma can tell the difference between those created by Fred and the ones Ashley makes. Ash says there's no difference but Curly insists that Emma's cravings have to be satisfied.

Round at the Kabin Rita, Norris, Max and Gina are gossiping. Max lets drop that Audrey and the bride had a slanging match and now Linda's disappeared. Rita is aghast at the thought of missing all this intrigue. Norris suggests its time for her to get a hair appointment and have the tonsorial touch but Rita sees through this as a means of getting more info out of Audrey.

Meanwhile in the Rovers Audrey says to Gail "how was I to know" and that Fred can take care of himself. Linda Balwin's Mum and Ashley Peacock's Dad, let's leave them to it. Audrey mentions that Mike and Linda had a fight. Dr Mat suggests that Ash should come and see him. Audrey continues the saga by saying that Mark and Linda have fallen out for good. And what's going on in the Dales with Fred marrying Eve and Mike ditching Linda. Dev walks in and chats to Gina who can't believe that Linda has upstaged her Mum and complains that Linda's mobile is switched off. She says that she'll ask Mike and be dead nice to him, and not mention that wedding. Imagine Fred having women fight over him! She wants to know why she can't go to a wedding like that.

A glum faced Ash is in Dr Mat's consulting room awaiting the results of the latest tests. Whilst they wait for Maxine to appear they chat about the wedding. Once she arrives Ash wants to get on with it because he knows it's not good news. He feels as if he's on trial and guilty for firing blanks. Dr Mat says it might be different. Ash wishes it was, "no change" is the result. Perhaps an ultrasound scan will give more hope.

Back at the Rovers Mrs Steve Macdonald wonders why she can't get hold of Linda. Gina admits she's dead worried. Gail and Audrey chat, Audrey says it seems that Martin and Sally are an item, and Gail wants to know "why not" it's good that they're knocking around together and "why should she be bothered"? Audrey tackles Mike. "What';s it all about? Linda going off in your car and where's Mark". Mike answers "He's back in Germany, I've just come from taking him to the airport, he hates her as much as I do". Audrey continues with "Yes, but you must be a bit worried, she's still your wife".

Round at Roy's Rolls poor Tyrone is meekly accepting a salad from Maria whilst Fiz is going the whole hog with a chip buttie and 2 sticky buns. Toyah is behind the counter and Sam asks her if she wants him to go to Court with her. She says that Les and Janice are going with and surely that's enough. Fiz sits down opposite Tyrone who has Maria alongside him. She taunts Tyrone with her chips and says that he needs feeding up. Fiz asks Maria what's she's doing with Jason Grimshaw - running - but Fiz implies something else. Maria grabs the long-suffering Tyrone and drags him away saying "dirty little trollop" over her shoulder to Fiz. Fiz tells Tyrone her grub is a bit more tasty, you know where to come. Maria tells Fiz to get rid of the smell of dog and says the kennels don't just have pedigrees they have mongrels as well.

The Peacocks are at home, Ash more despondent than ever. He tells Max he'll have the biopsy because he loves her but that he is so frustrated that he cant give her the one thing she wants - a baby.

Dev drops in on Mike at the factory. Asks "where's Linda,. That's her car outside". Mike admits Linda has taken his car and that's why he's using her's. Says he's divorcing her, that they had the mother and father of all rows, that she tried it on with his son and that Mike told her to sling her hook. Dev says that Mike has no idea and that if he's not in a hurry to remarry then he should leave the question of divorce until such time as Linda's really wants it, that way Mike will save money by letting her stew and she'll have to lower her sights and not screw him for every penny. Mike calls him a crafty so and so.

The Kabin is closing, Rita and Norris in attendance with Curly and Emma. He demands to carry her 2 magazines for her. She clutches her abdomen and he is at once concerned. Emma tells him it's all right just the baby kicking. Curly places his hand appropriately and he too can feel their unborn child's movements. Emma suggests they go home.

Chez Duckworth the young lovers are having a serious talk. Tyrone wants to know if Maria fancies Jason. She says no but admits she admires him for his dedication to training and healthy eating habits. Says Tyrone would have chips for breakfast/lunch/dinner if he was able. He asks her to give up the running. She turns this around and suggests that Tyrone should join them.

Finally, in the Rovers Toyah and Les are barside. Doug comes in and states that Simmonds should be made to walk around with a large notice announcing that he's a rapist, and that he'll not be sorry if he gets sent down for a long time. Les says if he doesn't then Simmonds had better look at as he'll be waiting for him. Toyah says that she's lost six months out of her life because of all this and that starting now she intends to get on with the rest of her life and not let what's happened hold her back. She gets in another round and it becomes obvious just how nervous the poor girl is at the prospect of facing the man who raped her. Fiz sidles up and asks "Mr Baldwin, on your own, you don't look rite well are you going down with what Linda's got, wot's keeping her at home?" Mike fumes and then turns to the assembled company and makes a general announcement to the effect that he's getting a divorce and has kicked Linda out and if anyone mentions her name at the factory, then they are fired.

Dum, dummy, dum, that well known tune as the credits roll by .

Friday 7 September

Written by Julie Gearey Directed by Anne Ross Muir

Tyrone and Maria both go their separate ways in the morning - Maria off for a jog, Tyrone off to the cafe for coffee. However, when Maria sees Fizz talking to Tyrone, she calls off her jog and goes indoors again.

In the cafe, Toyah is working. Les and Janice are there, all togged-up for their court visit. (Les is even wearing a suit and tie!) Toyah has decided not to go. Tyrone asks Jack's advice about women; Jack explains that he, Tyrone, has animal magnetism, just like Jack had in his youth, and that Tyrone should treat women like lionesses, he being the lion. Toyah changes her mind about working in the cafe, and leaves Vera to work on her own. (Is she going to the court, after all?) Tyrone is pleased with Jack's advice...

In the Kabin, Sally and Martin seem very friendly as they're browsing, which doesn't escape the attention of Rita and Emily. As Martin and Sally leave, Audrey enters and expresses her surprise that they're so friendly so soon, but adds that Gail doesn't seem to mind. Rita and Emily seem interested in the latest developments.

This time, in the cafe, it's the turn of the girls to talk - Maria asks Vera's advice about the threat of Fizz. Vera tells Maria that, since Maria deals with dogs all the time, she ought to know what to do - be a pedigree, keep your dignity, mark your territory and keep Tyrone on a tight leash! Maria is pleased with Vera's advice...

In Matt's surgery, Maxine and Ashley are discussing their lack of success at procreation. If there is no blockage, is IVF the answer? Matt advises them to keep on trying and not to give up hope of their having a baby. Matt hands Ashley some leaflets to help him.

In the Rover's, the ever-happy Edna tells Karen that she's concerned about Mike's marriage - if Linda and he split, the factory might close and she'd be out of a job. Rita talks to Gail about Martin and Sally. She congratulates Gail on taking the situation with Martin and Sally so well, but this is news to Gail. Jason is there, and adds his bit of news to Gail's woes - he has seen Martin and Sally snogging in the shop. Peter, talking to Edna and Karen, makes his feelings towards Baldwin quite plain - he hopes that Linda will take him for every penny. Rita goes on to Gail about Martin and Sally - 'isn't it nice that men can't split the best friends, Gail and Sally'? (Gail's facial expression would turn cream sour immediately!) Gail storms off, leaving Rita wondering about what she's just said...

Audrey visits Mike in his flat, where he's busy clearing every last vestige of Linda into bin bags - clothes, perfume, make-up. Everything. People were right: the marriage would never have worked, and he wants every trace of Linda out of his flat, and his life.

Gail arrives at work, looks down the street. Not a happy Gail today!

Fizz pays a visit to Tyrone at the garage and tempts him with meeting her later for chips, and even a sausage. Vera spies this little liaison as she comes out of her house. Tyrone escapes, for the moment. 'It'll take more than a sausage to tempt Tyrone', she tells Fizz!

Les and Janice finally meet up with Toyah. Simmonds has been convicted and sentenced to ten years in prison. Hugs all round.

INTERVAL

In the Rover's, Les is celebrating British justice with Janice, Toyah and a few others. Gail enters and finds Sally and Martin in each other's company, holding hands. Gail asks them about 'their little secret'. Sally tries to explain, but Gail tells them both that they've hurt her very much, in that everyone else knew about their affair before she did. Gail vents her anger on the pair - while the celebrants look on, and listen to every word... Gail storms out of the pub.

All is quiet chez the Peacocks. Maxine is optimistic about having a baby, but Ashley is depressed as he reads the leaflets Matt has given him. Maxine tells Ashley that they're in this together.

Sally and Martin are leaving the pub, but are accosted by Rita who tells them that they're not kids and therefore should be responsible adults. Meanwhile, Les and Janice continue their celebration of Simmonds' jail sentence. Charlie asks Toyah about how she's feeling and Toyah explains that, while Simmonds robbed her of the last few months of her life, no more!

At Gail's, she is pouring her heart out to her Mum, Audrey. She feels betrayed by both Sally and Martin - and she feels humiliated that everyone knew about the affair before she did. Gail just wants to crawl away and hide somewhere. More tears. More hugs.

In Martin's flat, he and Sally discuss what they ought to do. Sally tells Martin that it's not Rita's fault, but theirs. Sally feels humiliated, and she decides that she and Martin have to go and apologise to Gail right now to sort things out.

Mike appears in the Rover's. He offers Emily three bags of clothing (mostly 'tarty', he says) which belonged to his ex-wife. Emily accepts them for the Friends of Weatherfield General Hospital. Janice is now a bit tiddly, but Toyah tells her that she has some good news - she's starting college again. Les calls Toyah the 'brains of the family'!

Tyrone and Maria canoodle in the corner, watched, proudly, by Vera and Jack - the scene reminds them of their youth together. Sam arrives and tells Toyah that he's heard the good news of Simmonds' sentence. He tells her that he thinks that she's one of the bravest women he's ever met, and she tells him that he's one of the nicest men she's ever met. Toyah and Sam go off for something to eat together, leaving Les and Janice to their celebrations.

Sally and Martin arrive at Gail's house to offer their profuse apologies. Audrey is there and, before she leaves, she tells them both that their behaviour has been disgusting. Sally proffers her apology, but Gail doesn't want to hear it. Martin tries to apologise, with the same result. Martin wonders why it's important to Gail if Sally and he are friends, lovers, or what. Gail turns her venom on Sally and reels off a list of Sally's failed relationships. Sally and Martin can only listen, while Gail rants and raves, obviously very hurt by what she's just learnt. At the end of this verbal tirade, Gail says that she'll make it easy for them both - just get out of her house, now!! Sally and Martin leave...

Sunday 9 September

Written by Joe Turner and directed by Anne Ross Muir.

Gail cross questions Sarah on the events on the camping trip. Gail moans about her ex husband and her ex best friend. Martin is always lying to her and Sal lied as well once she knew about Rebecca. Anyway not a word to Richard - Gail does not want the day ruined. Anyway Richard and Gail are baby minding for the day.

Emily reports to Rita, in the Kabin, about receiving all of Linda's clothes which she has to sell for charity. Including her jumpers. Dev overhears the gossip concerning the separation. Rita asks that anything which might suit her be held back. Both Emily and Rita smile realising this is unlikely.

Martin arrives at Gail's house to meet a po faced Sarah who gives him a hard time over his relationship. Sarah wants to know why he is hurting Gail all over again. Martin tries to explain by Sarah does not give him a chance as she points out that the only thing Martin is keen on is getting his trousers off. Martin said he did not want to hurt anyone. Same old story says Sarah. She is Mum's best friend. They trade insults before Martin departs.

In the Rovers Geena is serving Karen, Sunita and Fiz (who has to have a coke). Geena asks after Linda. Sunita reckons she has good reason to disappear, and anyway observes Karen if Mike is divorcing her then she will not be lady muck any more. Geena remains worried. Maria arrives and observes that Fiz is too young to be in the pub. Maria warns Fiz that she is wasting her time with Tyrone. Fiz retorts that then Maria has nothing to worry about. Fiz reckons Tyrone will soon be hers. Emily asks Geena if she knows anything about Linda = but she will come and get her clothes.

Gail and Richard are walking Bethany in the park and Gail has bent his ear about Sally with whom she is really disappointed. Gail feels betrayed by her best friend and there is no way out. Gail feels better for simply getting it off her chest. They walk off pushing the pram with his arm around her.

Ashley and Matt are having a pint talking about Ashley's scan. Ashley has decided the important thing is that they have a baby and he has decided that it does not matter if he is the father or not. They really want the baby - he is thinking about it constantly.

At the bar Ken and Peter are discussing the vacant manager's job at the bookies. Peter thinks he is doing the job now and can do it permanently. Mike is not so sure but Peter asserts that he is going to surprise Ken one of these days, which Ken acknowledges is likely.

At the bus stop Sarah is taking a rest after a walk when Jason stops to check how she is. She is clearly still disturbed by the news about Martin and she sees something down the Street and departs. She walks past Geena collecting Linda's clothes from Emily. Also passing Maxine observes to Geena that she is unlikely to fit into Linda's clothes. Geena retorts that she is looking after them until Linda returns, not extending her wardrobe. We see Sarah still marching determinedly down the Street before the camera focuses on the garage where Tyrone is working overtime which as he observes to Maria will mean that they can get married sooner although Fiz is watching from the steps outside "Underworld".

Sarah ends her march by finding Sally. Sarah launches into an abusive tirade at Sally about her activities with Martin and her betrayal of Gail. Sal tries to explain but Sarah continues in full flow until Rita emerges from the Kabin, including observing that Sal is a desperate slag who can't keep her hands off any man who comes along. Rita takes Sarah into the Kabin to calm her down.

Sarah calmed by the interval explains to Rita about the outburst. Rita offers her a drink free but Sarah insists on paying for it.

Ashley tells Maxine about his plan for artificial insemination. Ashley knows that IVF will cost a lot of money and might not be successful. Ashley is worried about what might happen if it does not work. Max re- assures Ashley that she loves him and she is going nowhere and repeats her marriage vows. He is the number one man in her life - unless a baby boy comes along in which case he might become number two man.

Sal and Martin are drinking beer on a Sunday afternoon. Both are distressed by the outbursts from Sarah. Martin reckons it will pass given time. Then Sal observes that they still have to face Kevin. Sal wonders if it is worthwhile. Martin thinks it is - he will take a lesson in morality from his 13 year old single mother step daughter because it is worth it to be with Sal. They decide to go and face Sarah once they have finished the beers.

Mike and Dev are discussing Linda. Mike is happy that she is not with him - he is not worrying. Peter is happy to see Mike's life disrupted - after his treatment of Susan anything which upsets Mike is good for him.

Tyrone is boogying around the garage when Fiz arrives with a bag of goodies - she has something he will fancy - Cheese and onion crisps, a flapjack with toffee filling. Then a bakewell tart with a cherry on the top. Fiz knows that Tyrone has a very big appetite and she has a huge slab of chocolate. Tyrone says no once again - he is not hungry, not peckish. Fiz did not think he would turn down the goodie bag - but she has something else - herself and she grabs Tyrone and snogs him. Then she reminds him that she is available anytime.

Jason and Sarah are back at the bus stop where Jason is explaining that it gets easier seeing parents getting new partners. Jason knew but did not want to upset anyone.

Gail is ironing - perhaps Sarah was being truthful, some people are like that says Gail. Martin tries to apologise again - they were pretending but it was his idea, not Sally's. Martin has to tell David. She knows he is a good father - just a lousy human being. Martin tells Gail that he is serious - he loves Sally but Gail throws it back in his face by reminding him that was just what he said about Rebecca and look how that ended. Martin departs.

In the Rovers Rita is telling Ken about the events - even down to the very proud Sarah paying for the can of pop. Ken has had an email from Adam - it reminds him how resilient children are. Matt arrives and says hallo to Maria who has been waiting for Tyrone - she has been waiting ages. Tyrone remains flustered and Maria wonders what is wrong. Dev arrives and asks after Geena - she is upset in the back so Dev has a whisky and goes through. Geena has found that all of Linda's best clothes are there including her favourite jacket (black and white and my wife has wanted it for ages) and shoes. Geena cannot believe that Linda would depart without these clothes, or money and no-one has heard from her in over a week. Geena is convinced there is something wrong.

And that is about that for this week. Observations - well can Tyrone resist? I rather think so.

Is Geena right to be worried? Well given the problems with Linda any story is bound to be a surprise!!

And Sarah again gives another performance!! I am just left with the observation - how will David top it?

Is there any solution for Maxine and Ashley - or will it drag on for years?

Karen is annoyed that Steve managed to the bookies but not house hunting. She takes no notice of his explanation that he had to work.

Rita brings the girls back to Sally. Sally is holding back her tears. Rita comments to Sally that it obviously didn't go very well.

Karen tells Steve that as he managed to go the bookies and not househunting she is moving out until Steve finds something suitable.

Fizz tells Tyrone she's got herself sorted (waving a small paper bag), so they don't have babies. Tyrone rushes away.

Kevin knocks on Martin's door. There is no reply. He then sees Martin's car and starts to vanderlise it.

Wednesday 12 September

Friday 14 September

Strand 1. Curly tells Emma he has an important meeting this morning. Freshco are laying staff off and he is afraid that he is going to get the chop - business has not been so great recently. He later returns home with a long face and Emma jumps to the conclusion that the meeting went badly. Curly strings her along for a few seconds until admitting that in fact the meeting was entirely different - he has in fact been promoted and is the new area manager and will be responsible for a number of stores. And they do not have to move - his office will be in Weatherfield. Sadly to Emma he seems excited about the new job and he seems to be drawing back from his commitment to take on full time childcare.

Strand 2. Steve and Karen have moved into Alec's flat next door to Rita. Karen finds out from the girls at Underworld that the last time Steve was married he and his beloved had a flat in the Quays development - just like Linda. This of course winds up Karen who decides to make it clear to Steve that she wants the same treatment. Her trick this time is to invite Rita and Norris around for a drink after work - despite their feelings they accept and Karen is making small talk when Steve arrives home wanting a drink and female company. He joins the company although Rita and Norris soon depart and he extracts from Karen an explanation of this little game. Rita and Norris will be regular guests until he finds a somewhat better flat for them - so he had better get saving (remind me who spends Steve's money please?).

Strand 3. Do I have to do this? Anyway Kevin feels he should apologise to Molly and turns up with a bunch of flowers for her. She refuses to accept them as she indicates that Kevin should apologise to a few more people further up the queue than her. This gives something for Kevin to think about and he comes across Sally in the Rovers. He sits down with her and they agree, yet again, to turn over another new leaf as they have done before and start afresh. Whilst Kev in is the men's room, Martin comes in and Sally tells him the good news that Kevin has reformed. So Martin believing what he has been told offers to buy the next round of drinks. Sadly Kevin has not reformed that much and not only does he refuse the offer of a drink he makes it clear that he has no intention of forgiving Martin and the two of them trade blows before being separated by Duggie (did this man really play rugby?). Martin spends some time lying on the floor and bleeding.

Strand 4. Fiz is still after Tyrone but Maria and Tyrone have hatched a little plan. First they tell Kirk (Maria's tenth witted brother (well significantly less than half witted) that he is in with a chance. However Fiz turns down the suggestion when Maria tells her she has a new admirer - she does not like think stringy people. Later Maria eggs on Kirk and he goes over to Fiz (eating chips as usual) and invites her out. Although she says no initially she reckons that anything is better than nothing so agrees to meet him later.

Strand 5. Peter egged on by the barmaid puts to Ken his wish to buy the bookies and although Ken's initial reaction is to say no, he does agree to discuss the matter with Deirdre. The only way Ken can raise the money is to re-mortgage the house (why cannot Peter borrow against the business? - either the banks will consider it a good risk or they wont).

Strand 6. Candice is bewailing the lack of new trainers with the "right" brand name. It turns out that someone else has a job in a factory earning 2.50 an hour packing goods in the evenings. Candice is planning to go for an interview once she has found out more details.

Strand 7. Edna is still being the voice of doom. At one point she and several others are gathered in the bar of the Rovers and Duggie offers them a cauldron around which they can foregather in the future.

Apologies the details are limited this evening - sadly I failed to achieve a video recording so have had to rely on memory. Normal service will be restored for Sunday.

Sunday 16 September

Written by Jayne Hollinson and directed by Alan Wareing.

Strand 1. David meets Martin in the Street. The latter is wearing a cut lip because of his "fight" which he calls a misunderstanding. Martin says it is all over now and he will see David later. Later David and Rursie are fighting in the Street. Gail and Sally exchange words when Sally admits that Martin and Kev were fighting. Sarah observes that this just increases the embarrassment. Later Sally turns up at the garage to confront Kev over his actions. Kev is not repentant at all. He says sorry in a particularly strident way. Sal tells Kev that beating up her boyfriends has to stop - or she will stop his access to the children if it happens again. Later Gail fronts up Kev in the Rovers. Gail admits she is upset over losing her best friend. Kev has got to face facts - he lost Sal a long time ago - and Gail tells him to think about it. Later Martin and Gail meet in the Rovers - peace has broken out. Gail brings Martin up to date about Kev and the past - she reflects that it does not do anyone any good. Gail wishes it had not been Sally and then warns him - treat her better than you treated me.

Strand 2. Shelley tells Duggie that Edna will not be in - she is ill. Edna is buying some food in the cafe where Duggie asks if she is feeling better. She walks off with a huge bag of food saying that she is having to force herself to eat. She walks off moaning.

Strand 3. Curly is working on Saturday - in his new job. Emma reckons it makes him sound like a trouble shooter and Curly responds enthusiastically that is just right. Emma is to stay away from the paintpot but she spots Charlie emerging from her house and asks if she is doing anything. We later see Charlie and Emma in the pub - it turns out that Charlie has been decorating for Emma. Emma later tells Charlie how she sees the baby as an extension of the family line. Charlie cannot see this - she was adopted and never knew her mother and she has no idea why she was adopted. Emma asks if she is curious - but she denies and this seems to be the real reason for Charlie's reluctance to have her own children. On Curly's return he is unhappy with the decorating. He has had a great day at work - he feels he has achieved something - but has not told anyone about leaving - the time is not right - but somehow it does not seem so certain.

Strand 4. Ashley and Max are off for him to be scanned at the hospital - as Max informs the entire Street. At the hospital they are waiting, Ashley particularly nervously when Martin comes along and has a quick leg pull. Ashley vanishes for his scan. Ashley is away for ages so Max returns to the Rovers and is given a chance to feel Emma's baby kicking (won't be long now Max). Eventually the scan is completed and the diagnosis is fixed - it is a minor operation to clear the blockage on Monday.

Strand 5. Vera is giving Maria advice on how to deal with Fiz, Tyrone won't look at her. Later Maria, Tyrone and Kirk are wandering down the Street. Fiz issues an enormous wolf whistle at Tyrone but Kirk thinks it is aimed at him so he wanders over to Fiz and asks her out. Fiz is disappointed but having thought about it she decides that she will put him through his paces - but he must not be late. Kirk reckons she is gagging for it. They meet in the Rovers but Kirk has no money to take her out so they decide to gatecrash the party.

Strand 6. Peter gets an indication from Ken that he might well support the purchase of the bookies - where Peter had a run in on Friday with the new manager who is hoping to buy from Skinner and will run a tighter ship (Peter turned up late having spent the night with Shelley on their first date). Ken will have to discuss the mortgage with Deirdre but is impressed by Peter's enthusiasm. A little later Dreary is far from amused and issues a veto - overheard by Shelley. As Dreary notes they would be taking all the risks and they are too old for that. Peter arrives in the Rovers and eventually is joined by Ken and Dreary who tell him it is too much of a risk. Peter blames Dreary and the two of them exchange words. Shelley overhears it all.

Strand 7. Karen invites Toyah and Maria to a flat warming party. Later Rita has heard rumours of said party and she asks Steve to keep it under control as she has to be up early on Sunday to do the papers. Steve re- assures her it is just a few friends, not a party. The party starts quietly although Toyah demands a proper kiss from Sam and they get on with it. Fiz and Kirk arrive - the more the merrier says Karen. Tyrone and Maria observe that she no longer seems to be chasing Tyrone. Later however Maria disappears for a drink and Fiz takes the opportunity to have a go at Tyrone! On the other side of the room Sam wants to stop dancing with Toyah - they were dancing too close. But Toyah has decided she no longer wants to take it slowly and drags Sam off for some horizontal dancing. Later Tyrone receives another comment from Fiz and he and Maria depart. Steve and Karen are left with Kirk and Fiz - and a banging on the door from Rita who wants the noise turned down - it is after midnight. Karen tells Rita not to get involved. She then tells Rita to get a life. Steve is extremely troubled.

Strand 8. Candice has got the job - not a word to her mum and she is looking forward to spend, spend, spend and she is not going to bother with her homework.

Strand 9. Toyah and Sam are in bed together. Sam tells Toyah that he has fallen for her - he has met the right one and hopes they will be together forever. Somehow, the expression on Toyah's face tells another story.

Be back next week with a brand new show

Thursday 20 September

Written by Jo O'Keefe and directed by David Kester.

Another extra episode, I can only assume that an increased permanent service is just around the corner - after all why are there more new but empty properties just next door to the butchers? Any leftovers from Soapstars should apply now!

It is sombre in the Rovers with the news of Edna's discover spreading through the Street. We shall have to await the post mortem to find out why but the finger is currently being pointed at alcohol poisoning, although the hangovers from Wednesday appear to have vanished.

Later Duggie is still concerned once the pub is open remembering the bad news stories she peddled. Sunita suggests closing for the afternoon but as Duggie observes that is not what Edna would have wanted!!

Peter arrives at work at the bookmakers to find the police departing. Oddly the place was broken into overnight and the safe broken open and Rob's £5000 cash (obtained from unusual sources and for which presumably the safe was not designed and of course the company will not be insured as it exceeds the limit on the safe) has gone missing. Now who could be responsible - indeed who knew about it? The circle of one is already tightening around Peter's neck (after all he reckoned that slimy Rob would not report it to the police in the first place).

Peter's initial response was that he "had his arms full" - the implication that he spent the night with Shelley. However she is not such a dumb blonde and refuses to go along with the alibi when Peter puts the suggestion to her in Roys Rolls (as if he would do it in public - very silly boy). However Peter's luck is in because the earwigging Karen moves over to his table and asks why he might need a little confirmation that Shelley cannot provide - she can if he makes it worth her while.

Later Karen completes a statement to the police. She ha had a row with Steve and whilst he was working she had turned for solace to Peter and they had spent the night together. As the PC departs Steve runs into him and wants to know what is going on (after all Steve has an aversion to uniforms). Karen tells Steve the story so far and waves around the £700 Peter coughed up for the lies. Steve is unamused, he cannot believe that Karen is that stupid - but for the money she cannot see what is wrong - he calls her a stupid cow - and she simply asks how they are going to spend the money.

Steve arrives at the bookmakers to discuss the situation with Peter who makes it clear that Karen volunteered her services and reputation - not the other way around. Rob wants to know what is going on and with Steve out of the way Peter takes the chance of clarifying that it was Karen who had been in his bed - not Shelley.

Later Karen has a word with Peter - he should be prepared for the worst. Steve reckons his honour has been affected and is likely to tell the police that the alibi is worthless. Peter is worried.

At Underworld Mike is letting in the staff. Linda's brother remains on the staff and asks for the key to the stock room. Mike tells the girls (who may I remind everyone are missing Linda's selling skills and Hayley's supervisory skills, quite why Hayley has not returned to work - apart from the obvious but I mean in a plot sense - is not clear to me) that they are on their own today as he has to go out.

Later Mike returns from his meeting and finds nothing happening as the girls discuss Edna. Mike is soon brought up to date on being an employee short and he tells them to work harder to make up for the reduced headcount.

Mike is wandering around the factory floor and catches Fiz sewing her own job. She gets told off, then he notices that Karen is missing - grieving for Edna says Janice quick as a flash. She'll be mourning her job soon then observes Mike if she does not get back to work.

Kirk tells Tyrone that he knows he has been playing away with Fiz. Kirk does not believe that nothing happened - either Tyrone tells Maria or Kirk will. Later Kirk finds Tyrone smothering Maria and refuses to join them saying they have a lot to talk about. Maria wants to know what is going on but Tyrone refuses to talk.

Later Maria drags the story out of Kirk. She does not believe that Tyrone has kissed Fiz and if she does not want to believe Kirk she should ask Tyrone. Poor Tyrone needs to go into hiding. She finds Tyrone at the garage and as he simply cannot tell a lie (never has - he once saw where it got his mother and he refuses to tell lies) Maria soon knows that Kirk was telling the truth. She instantly tells Tyrone she hates him and smacks him (although not very hard).

A distraught Maria bursts in to the factory and gives Fiz a touch of the verbals and throws a glass of water into her face. The two girls get in a clinch (not that sort of clinch) until dragged apart by Janice and Ryan. Mikes arrives and orders Maria out of the factory and awards Fiz a final warning. Mike then turns on Janice for not keeping the place moving. Why? she asks - because you are the supervisor now - so get supervising!! Janice's face lights up in a huge grin.

Do I have to do the Martin and Sally storyline? Anyway Sally wants some breathing space and tells Martin they have to slow down because of Rita's comments. Martin takes this as you might well expect and pops into the Kabin to "discuss" the subject with Rita. Rita really tries to apologise - but it seems to have no impact on Martin.

Later Rita talks to Sally in Roys Rolls and says she did not mean her to end it with Martin. Sally reckons it is for the best - she needs a break from men.

Meanwhile Richard arrives at Gail's wanting to go out for lunch but Gail refuses - Bethany is hot and certainly far from well. Richard offers to cook. Just as the meal is about to be served Gail announces that Bethany has been sick and rather than rushing to the surgery at the end of the Street where she works they are going to have to dash over to A&E at the hospital where luckily Martin can appear and rush in looking concerned. Even more impressively the doctor assures all that the baby only has tonsillitis and not the meningitis which Gail had been wittering about. Some antibiotics and full recovery will be achieved. The Platts smile at each other, although Richard is not happy.

Later Richard offers to take Gail out to dinner but she feels she must look after Bethany - and as Richard is learning the family come first.

Sam has made a provisional booking for a holiday for Toyah and himself in Ibiza to do the clubs and get away from everything. R'Toyota is not amused - and she cannot find the words to tell Sam what she does not want.

And finally Maria collects her clothes from the Duck-Eggs. Kirk tells Tyrone to stay away from her. Vera cannot understand - her family is falling apart. She gives Tyrone a bang around the head in the hope that he might come to his senses. Fiz is ordered to stay away but as she observes to Tyrone - just you and me then? She wanders off and Tyrone sinks to the ground realising that he may have lost Maria and he starts to cry.

Friday 21 September

Written by Peter Whalley Directed by David Kester

We see Karen and Steve in their flat, rowing about Karen's agreeing to act as an alibi for Peter Barlow. Steve points out to her that what she has done is conspiracy to pervert the course of justice and she could end up in prison. She retorts that he would know all about that!

Vera and Tyrone come out of the house, Vera giving him a tongue-lashing for seeing another girl, Fiz. She tells him to 'stay away from that trollop!' Karen meets Peter and tells him that Steve won't say anything, much to his Peter's relief. When Karen arrives at the factory, Janice asks her why the police were at her flat, but Karen denies this.

Maxine and Ashley are outside their house as Curly is leaving for work. Ashley invites him and Emma for a drink in the evening, to celebrate his operation, and Curly accepts. Just then, Matt appears and Ashley invites him and Charlie too, much to Maxine's discomfort...

Richard arrives at Gail's to invite her out for a meal, but she's too busy looking after Bethany and doing chores around the house. Richard asks if Martin will be coming round. Probably. He leaves, without staying for even a coffee; he'll call her later.

In the cafe, Peter tells his Dad, Ken, that he's been interviewed by the police about the break-in but he has an alibi, as he was with someone all night - just don't ask who it was. Fiz is being served her order by Vera, who tells her in no uncertain terms that she's to blame for the break-up of Tyrone and Maria. Fiz doesn't accept that she's to blame; instead, she looks quite pleased with the news. Vera tells her to place her order - and then get out.

In the pub, Duggie says to Shelley that he's going to buy a wreath for Edna. Shelley asks him to get a new cleaner while he's at it. Karen, Bobbi and Janice arrive. Vikram asks Bobbi if, maybe, Karen and Steve have had a row, for Steve has been in a bad mood all morning. Bobbi says that Karen has been a bit quiet too. Tyrone moans about the situation he finds himself in with Maria, but Sam has other things on his mind - Toyah. Bobbi tells Vikram what Karen has told the police - about spending the night with Peter Barlow, but in the strictest confidence, of course!

Maria comes into the cafe and Vera is pleased to see her. Maria asks about Tyrone, and Vera thinks that he's 'learned his lesson'. Maria doesn't look too convinced...

Toyah comes out of the corner shop and Sam rushes over from the garage to talk to her. Will he see her later? Well, she's working at the Rover's that night, so yes. Tyrone is working on a car and Fiz comes up, first of all offering him a crisp and then a snog, both of which he declines. Maria, who's 'just passing', witnesses this and acts a bit coy; she might see him later. Fiz wonders why Tyrone puts up with Maria...

Vikram arrives at Steve's and tells him that he's heard about Karen and Peter Barlow. Steve tells him the truth about the 'alibi', which leads Vikram to the inevitable conclusion that Peter is guilty of the break-in - if he weren't, why go to such lengths to cover his tracks?

INTERVAL

In the Rover's, Richard is asking Ken if he thinks it a possibility that Gail and Martin will get back together again. Richard feels left-out when Gail has her family around her. Ken (wisely!) offers no advice. Toyah tells Janice that she's had enough of Sam hanging around her; she's not going on holiday with him, for she's starting college on Monday. Janice is let into the 'secret' of Karen's supposed night of passion by Bobbi, just as Karen arrives to join them. Janice asks Karen if she's not seeing Peter tonight. Karen storms off. Shelley thanks Rob, the manager of the betting shop, for warning her of Peter's two-timing.

Back at the Peacock's, Ashley is busy preparing food for tonight's party. Maxine wonders if he'd not prefer a 'quiet night in', but Ashley is looking forward to the get-together. Maxine is not!

Karen and Steve's flat. Karen tells Steve that people know about what she and Peter have told the police. Steve is not happy to hear this. Karen persuades him to take her to the pub tonight, just to show everyone that everything is fine.

In the pub, Vera is still tongue-lashing poor Tyrone, who has no intention of apologising to Maria. Sam asks Toyah when she'll be off-duty, but she doesn't seem interested. Karen and Steve come in and Duggie, obviously having heard of their little marital discord, serves them, smiling.

At the Peacock's, Maxine is quiet, and so is Matt, leaving Ashley and Charlie to do most of the talking. Ashley proposes a toast to 'the best doctor in the world' and then adds, 'If we do manage to have a baby, it'll be down to you'!! Curly and Emma arrive. They all congratulate Curly on his promotion to regional manager. Matt apologises to Emma for having started drinking early, but Emma tells him, 'Well, you've got to let your hair down now and again - never mind the consequences.' (Maxine and Matt exchange meaningful glances...)

Back at the pub, Janice asks Toyah if she's going out with Sam. No. She's going out with some mates. Janice tells her to ditch him if she's not serious. Janice is offered a drink by Steve. Janice expresses her surprise that Karen is out with her husband. Karen retorts that they're going out for a meal to celebrate their three months of marriage, and that they're both very happy with each other. Steve agrees. Maria comes in to see Tyrone, who by this time is quite tipsy. He refuses to apologise, and she gives him her ring back. Shelley confronts Peter - she announces to the whole pub that he has two-timed her with Karen and she refuses to serve him. Steve and Karen make a hasty exit. Duggie serves Peter his pint.

Back at the cosy get-together at the Peacock's. Charlie, quite tipsy by this time, is explaining why she now wants to meet her natural mother to find out why she 'gave her away'. Was it the result of some secret affair? These things do happen...

Another blazing row at the MacDonalds' flat. While Steve accuses Karen of being stupid, for a few 'measly quid', she accuses him of being scared and pathetic. She storms out...

Richard arrives at Gail's, all apologetic for his behaviour earlier. Gail explains that her family always has to come first and Richard agrees to be a happy close second. They kiss and make up...

Back at the Rover's, Duggie tells Shelley that he always knew that Peter was 'a bad 'un' and maybe they could console each other... However, his train of thought is interrupted by the arrival of Steve. Is there trouble brewing? (Sorry about that dreadful pun.) Steve approaches Peter at the bar and asks him if he's enjoying his pint, for it might be the last one he'll have for a while - first thing in the morning, Steve is going to tell the police everything...

Sunday 23 September

Karen McDonald and Peter Barlow are deep in conversation he fears Steve will go to the police, she you will recall is his alibi. Steve says she's stupid and Karen retorts that she only did it for the money. He says he's not going to the police but he'll make Barlow sweat.

Dougie walks into the Rovers hefting an enormous floral tribute spelling out Edna's name. He mutters that he had to put £20 to the collection. He asks Shelley to write something suitable on the card, after much deliberation she comes up with "Happy at Last!". Dougie announces that as a mark of respect the pub will be closed until after the funeral - not a popular decision with the customers.

On the street. Charlie is off to see her natural mother. Matt offers to go with her but she says no this is something she must do on her own. He asks that she call him as soon as she has been. Ashley saunters up and invites Matt and Charlie for a meal. Matt says its ok and that he's on his own. Ash wants to know where Charlie's gone and is very sympathetic when he learns the reason for her absence. Matt dithers a bit but then decides to accept the Peacock's invitation.

At the café. Toyah is busily polishing glasses when Sam comes to ask her about the holiday in Ibiza. She agrees to go round to his place for her tea. Janice says she feels sorry for Sam and suggests that if Toyah doesn't know how lucky she is, then she should move over and let another girl in.

In the Bookies. Steve puts a hand on Peter's shoulder which makes him jump. He says that he's seen sense but that it's a serious offence and his male pride has been wounded, everyone thinks Karen slept with Peter. Steve says he should smack Peter, nothing rough, just for having my missus. I've no choice if the outside world is to believe this pack of lies, anyway the police will think it's a reasonable response. No, not in here, I want a wider audience. It's something you can look forward to later Peter.

Charlie has parked outside any unknown house and is sitting in her car. She makes her mind up and rings the bell. A blonde girl, about her age, comes to the door clutching a small child. Charlie asks if Pam Hargreaves is in. Yeah comes from the back hall. Who want's to know. Charlie says her name is Charlotte Ransome formerly Johnson, and that she wanted to meet Pam, and thought that she might like to meet her. Pam is decidedly unfriendly but says that Charlie should come in. Charlie looks perturbed.

Interval

Pam says that it's not a joke, you are Charlotte. Charlie says most people call her Charlie. Pam says she'd have like some warning, Charlie just reiterates that she wanted to meet her mum. Mum asks where she lives and Charlie replies Weatherfield, that she's a teacher, married but with no children. Pam continues to worry at why Charlie has come, what does she want. Charlie's answer is that she just wanted to see her and what about her dad? Pam says she's got a family of her own now. I see says Charlie, so you just dumped me and then started afresh. I've had a lucky escape and can see myself out, with that Charlie departs.

Round at the Peacocks Ash suggests that Max should keep Matt company whilst he makes the Yorkshires, and no Max is not to attempt making the puddings! Matt and Max go into a huddle in the front room, he says they must behave normally and make it less obvious, forget all out it Max, we've got to move on, you'll have to, I'm married too. Max enquiries where Charlie is and is informed that she's gone to look for her mother. Ash pops his head round the door to announce that the meal will be ready in 15 minutes.

A sombre note at the Rovers as the funeral party gathers for drinks. Shelley does a double-take as Dougie brings over the living spit of the late departed Edna to be introduced. It turns out to be Edna's sister Iris. Who seemingly has a similarly mournful outlook on life. Dougie retreats hastily leaving Shelly to listen to the monologue about 1987 nodules and the fact that Iris thought she'd be the first one to go. Thankfully Shelley spies Betty and hastily introduces her to Iris so that she too can escape. Betty eulogises about how caring Edna was which is news to Iris since she'd always thought her sister a misery guts. Iris tackles Dougie as to whether he needs a new cleaner. Quick as a flash Dougie says he's already got someone.

Matt lets himself into his house to find Charlie sitting on the sofa. He asks how long she's been back and how did it go? Matt explains he'd been next door. Charlie reports that he mother wasn't interested, didn't want to know and that there's nothing to tell. Says she's less sentimental and she can see why but she doesn't hold any grudges. Said her mother had a cold stare of disbelief and that she didn't want the past dragged up, it was really awful. She's got another daughter not much younger than me and a grandchild and what she terms "a family of her own". I meant nothing to her. Matt cradles Charlie in his arms to comfort her.

Meanwhile over at the Rovers Steve and Karen arrive clutching lots of carrier bags. Janice and Peter are there. Steve says he's been out buying sexy outfits for Karen and some nice shirts for himself. Peter sidles up to him and suggests he gets it over with. No, wait says Steve I need more people around. Just hit me and get it over with implores Peter.

Back at Sam's place Toyah is toying with her food saying she's not hungry. Sam says he knows what's coming. Toyah looks dead nervous. She admits that she doesn't want to go on holiday with him and that she wants them to finish. Says she's not ready yet for anything heavy. Sam says he's been stupid and that they should take things more slowly. Toyah says that he wants more than she can give him. He implores her to wait and week and see how it goes and she admits she can hardly say no. OK says Sam we'll see how it goes and he gives her a cuddle.

In the Rovers Peter's time has come and Steve's smacks him hard whilst uttering "Go with my wife again and I'll kill you". Shelley picks Peter up and takes him in the back to clean him up. Karen demands of Steve "why did you hit him?" Steve says that it will make people think and that the alibi will look more convincing and anyway he's not a wimp. He tells Karen that Peter agreed to it.

In the back parlour at the Rovers Peter is trying to convince Shelley that there was nothing go on between him and Karen. Says the punch up was just for show and that he paid Karen because he needed an alibi. He says that he wouldn't mess up what he's got with Shelley. OK so where were you demands Shelley. You nicked that money, Peter says he'd only borrowed it. Yeah she says like you only borrowed the whisky. Get out - I'm not going out with a thief.

Written by Phil Ford Directed by Colin Cant

Eileen and Todd come out of the house, and she tells him that she's going to the school today to see the headmistress, in order to sort out his little trouble with his teacher, Charlie.

Ken asks Sam if he enjoyed the film. Well, Toyah did. Sam would like to take Toyah to the theatre, but tickets are sold out. However, Ken will see what he can do - he has friends at the theatre.

Sunita receives a huge bunch of flowers at the shop, but with no card. Deirdre suggests a secret admirer, but Sunita knows who the sender is - Duggie.

Peter arrives at Karen and Steve's flat to arrange his £5,000 bet on a horse. Being so much money, Steve will have to go to the track to place the bet. The odds are 10-1.

Ash and Max's house. He's going to have his stitches out today and Maxine offers to come with him, little realising that their local doctor will do the deed, not the hospital!

In the corner shop, Steve kisses Karen goodbye as he heads off to the race-track. Geena informs Dev that she's invited her parents for Sunday lunch. Dev spies the flowers; who are they from? Duggie? He thinks that Duggie might be as good as 20 years ago, given plenty of vitamins and surgical appliances. Sunita thinks it's all very romantic...

At the bookies, Peter's mind is elsewhere, at the track. Dennis places a 5 bet on the football team, County, to win, which Rob says is a waste of money. Dennis wonders why Peter looks so worried.

At the school, the headteacher and Charlie have a meeting with Todd and his Mum, Eileen. He is being blamed for something he hasn't done (true) but the headteacher and Charlie think otherwise.

Back at the bookies, Peter watches the race and his horse wins!

In the Rovers, Ken tells Sam that there are tickets at the theatre box-office for him. Duggie wonders if Sunita got the flowers and Deirdre tells him that Sunita 'got the message'. Peter arrives and asks Karen where Steve is. She blurts out that Steve has put half of the winnings on another bet - County to win at football. Peter can't believe what he's just heard and orders Vikram to get him a taxi.

At the school, Eileen's meeting with the headteacher and Charlie is not going smoothly. Todd accuses the school staff of never listening. He gets to his feet and knocks some trophies off a table. That does it - he's excluded and, when Eileen tries to put her point of view, she is banned from the school as well.

INTERVAL

In the hairdresser's, Maxine is giving Bobbi a manicure. Bobbi tells Audrey that she's looking for a new flat-mate. Ashley arrives, reminding Maxine of their appointment at the surgery. Reluctantly, Maxine leaves with her husband.

At the school, Ms Johnston (headteacher) and Charlotte (Charlie) have a quiet word together. Ms Johnston suggests to her member of staff that, if she wants to get drunk, she must do it behind closed doors; she also suggests that Charlie gets help with her 'problem'.

At the surgery, Matt successfully removes Ashley's stitches and tells him that everything's fine, good as new, or even better. He'll have to expect some discomfort, that's all... Maxine puts on a brave face.

In the Rovers, Toyah arrives, all dressed-up for her 'special surprise'. Sam approves.

In the garage, Eileen tells Dennis about Todd's five-day exclusion. He's bright, she says, not like her, but he's inherited her big gob.

Peter has caught up with Steve eventually and makes it clear to him that, if County don't win, Steve is in big trouble.

In the Rovers, Duggie wonders where Sunita is. Geena tells him that flowers can mean only three things to a woman - thank-you, sorry or get 'em off. Sunita comes in; she loves the flowers and Duggie is very attentive.

Karen and Steve prepare to watch the football in their flat. Peter arrives, with some cans of beer, to watch the match with him. Steve's relief turns to worry when Peter makes it clear that, if County lose, he'll want to know where to find Steve, immediately.

In the Rovers, Dev asks Geena what her parents are like. They both love snooker. OK by him. Sam tells Toyah they're going to the theatre, not a new club. Charlie moans on to Matt about what her headteacher told her, that she had a problem. Not her. Matt suggests, well, maybe sometimes Charlie's drinking gets out of hand... Toyah doesn't want Sam to do just what she wants to do and they agree a compromise - the play first, then the new club.

Back at the flat, Bobbi and Vikram arrive and watch the football with the others. The tension is mounting...

Ashley and Maxine at home. He tells her that, although he's a bit sore just now, he'll be back to normal soon. Maxine looks relieved, but for what reason?

At Karen and Steve's, the match is over. County lost. Steve apologises to Peter, who first of all goes mad and attacks Steve. Then he smiles, telling Steve and the others that he put the £25,000 that Steve gave him on a bet - City to win - which will bring him in £50,000. The bookies, he says, is his!

Sunday 30 September

Written by Jayne Hollinson and directed by Colin Cant.

Peter and Steve are looking at the bookies. Peter is still doubtful that he will be successful - he needs various licences.

Geena and Dev are discussing the impending visit by her parents for dinner - she is expecting no problems but Dev is not so sure. A little later in the Corner shop Sunita asks Dev if the age difference between him and Geena is the cause of problems. Dev snaps back the assertion that she is preparing a dry run for this evening? Sunita and Deirdre chuckle that Dev may not admit it but is clearly nervous about meeting Geena's parents. Sunita says that they had better not let on to Mr Cool that he has been sussed! Anyway says Deirdre what is this question about age differences? Something to do with a certain local landlord? Sunita admits that he is going to let him have a second chance and she reckons that he will pamper her a little - and she could do with some of that - much better than some previous boyfriends.

Max and Ash have had breakfast - and he is keen to resume marital relations - Max is not so keen and voices her concern. Ash assumes that she has gone off him and decides to go out for a walk.

Charlie is wandering around the house and notices that her front door has been emblazoned with further comments about her drinking ability. ("Rammys a drunk"). She runs outside and immediately assumes that the young Grimshaw lad is responsible. Matt threatens to take matters into his hands but Charlotte decides to face the enemy with a scrubbing brush and bucket. Not surprisingly Eileen and Dennis provide a barrier and Todd denies everything. Charlie has to become a scrubber but Maxine takes pity on her and goes to find something which might be more effective.

Audrey visits Max and is brought up to date on the "row". Audrey provides some wise words - although Max admits to being a rotten actor - she cannot stand the guilt. Audrey tells her to do what Ash wants - it will make things more normal. The sooner she is back to normal the sooner she can put the events with Matt behind her. As Audrey leaves Max says she is feeling better and Audrey tells her to drag Ash upstairs on his return.

Peter and Steve are counting the winnings. Steve wants his cut - but Peter reckons he has had it and lost it. Karen has got a touch of conscience coming on and they eventually on settle on £2000. Peter has one more purchase to make - a peace offering for Shelley and the rest can go in the bank.

Dev leaves the shop to assist Geena with some advice from Sunita - if they ask what his intentions are he should lie and say honourable. As Dev departs Duggie arrives and Sunita comes back into the shop catching him in some confusion. He asks for some tomato ketchup and then for some brown sauce and asks if she will be visiting the Rovers later as she pulls them off a shelf immediately in front of him. He pays Dreary and departs without taking the sauces!

Max finds Ash in the Rovers eating a hotpot, as he did not want to put her off her lunch. She apologises and suggests that she has been so wound up each month waiting to be pregnant that she just wants to stop going through that monthly wait and the strain. Ashley observes that they can now let nature takes its course. They kiss and make up. And anyway they are losing time and Ashley abandons his hotpot is favour of an afternoon of passion.

Peter arrives and asks Shelley for a minute and he passes over a bracelet. Shelley refuses to accept the gift or the story - she wants him to give the 5 grand back - and she thought of him as a decent bloke but now she feels she was wrong.

Geena has laid the table and greets her parents. They like the place and ask what Dev is short for - they seem less than pleased when he appears

Charlie is having a glass of wine and she and Matt discuss their drinking habits - he can knock it back just as much as her. Does he drink less than the recommended amount. He admits he exceeds the limit. They both agree to drop the drink.

Sunita arrives at the Rovers and is presented with free drinks. In exchange Sunita delivers the two sauces bottles. He compliments her looks this evening and she asks if she does not normally look so good!! She moves over to Bobbi and Duggie asks Shelley if he was always this bad at chatting up girls. Shelley says his chat up lines were never very good but perhaps he much younger and better looking in those days. Sunita admits that she fancies Duggie to Bobbi.

Steve and Karen find Peter in the Rovers where his boss observes the bracelet. Peter admits that Shelley is right. Later Peter's boss talks to Karen and Steve - observing that they still seem friendly all things considered. He clearly harbours doubts over the various stories.

Conversation over dinner is stilted. Geena's mother makes reference to "your sort" and what his family do. Neither side is making any attempt to come to terms with the situation.

Jason is telling Sarah about the events with the Ramsdens. Sarah had seen Luke in the Street earlier and he was looking shifty. Jason knew that Luke put the note on the board at school.

Charlie and Matt are heading for the pub and meet Ash and Max in the Street so join forces. Charlie and Matt order orange juices whilst Max goes over to Audrey to tell her that she has followed her advice and things are already back on the right path. Here's to the little Peacocks. Charlie and Matt nurse their orange juices. So they mutually agree to stay off the drink during the week.

Over at Dev's the men are getting on much better but Geena's mother is taking Geena to task for not telling them in advance. Her mother does not think that Geena has thought things through. They exchange angry words. Geena tells her mother that she and Dev might not be married but they are living together. (Gill and Morris Gregory are the parents names).

Duggie is still eyeing up Sunita. Shelley tells him to ask her out. Duggie reckons he is getting a little old for all of this. Sunita has not been asked yet. Dreary recalls her much younger husband. Eventually Duggie asks Sunita for a word and she leaves the group. He struggles over a very difficult statement but fails to reach the end before she agrees to go out with him.

Parents gone Geena apologises to Dev for her patronising mother - who just does not know how to handle the presentation of an asian person. Dev is forgiving - he is used to it. Anyway as he observes it does not matter what others think - but Geena does not seem convinced.

And just how difficult are Dev's parents going to be in comparison?

And can Peter sort out the £5,000 without getting nicked? And recapture the delightful Shelley?
