Friday 4 January

Early morning on Coronation street and the postman hands Kevin, who has just opened the garage, his mail. He strolls inside, very slowly, and his eye lights on one of Dennis' shirts...

Eileen is at home, alone in her grief for the man she loved.

Janice is sitting in her flat, in the depths of despair, while Toyah sleeps on the couch. It's 8h40. Toyah wakens and offers her Mum a drink or something to eat, which she refuses. Janice thinks out loud - she has so much to sort out; this is the first time someone close to her has died; she and Dennis were going to do so much together; they had planned to get a place of their own; Dennis was going to take her to America on holiday; she had even planned a baby, Dennis' baby. Then she asks herself the eternal question - why? Why??

Tyrone arrives at the garage, only to have Kevin break the tragic news of Dennis' death to him, which he takes badly. Kevin offers coffee and sympathy.

At the Grimshaw house, Jason tells his Mum that Sally has given him the day off to comfort his Mum, but he admits that he wouldn't know how. Eileen asks her sons not to tip-toe around her.

Les, left arm in plaster, is talking to Sam. There is nothing in the papers about the accident. In his turn, Les thinks out loud - he and Dennis had met while they were both on community service; Dennis was the best mate he'd ever had. Les then asks his big question - if...? Les concludes that he has killed Dennis.

Emma and Curly have been up all night with little Ben, but Norris has arrived to soothe the baby, who is now quiet. (Norris tells them that, in his amateur dramatic days, people said that his acting in Death of a Salesman would have put anyone to sleep!) Norris can't imagine Rita's ever having been a baby, or Fred either. Emma announces Ben's feeding time, so Norris exits swiftly.

In the Rovers, Shelley can't wait to leave and Peter is obviously jealous. Shelley assures him that men and women can be just friends, like her and Duggie. Peter doesn't look convinced. Kevin tells Molly that he's been to see Janice and she's in a bad way. However, he's bought a present for Ben, and Molly smilingly approves. Betty tells Rita and Blanche that she's now worked for nine licencees. Blanche wonders if the pub is going to have a collection for a wreath for Dennis, but she shies away from offering a contribution: after all, he was a home-wrecker and this tragedy could be seen as retribution. Duggie arrives to tell Shelley that he's been gazumped for the Rugby Club, which news brightens Peter's day.

Eileen receives a letter for Dennis and isn't sure what to do. Jason thinks it doesn't matter what she does with the letter, and Eileen accuses him of having no sensitivity - she loved him. Jason retorts that he's glad Dennis is dead, and receives a slap on the face from Eileen for his sentiments. Jason admits that he liked Dennis, but storms off, leaving Eileen, once again, alone with her grief.

Rita arrives at Janice's flat, not to offer, as Janice suspects, empty condolences, but practical support, for Rita's first husband, Len, had died in similar circumstances and she well knows the pain Janice is suffering right now. Rita offers to help with organizing the funeral, and Janice expresses her gratitude for that. Rita also assures Janice that, in time, the pain will fade...

At the Rovers, Eve takes Geena into the back room and breaks the sad news of Dennis' death. "Lovely man", says Geena. She then goes on tell Eve about her planned holiday, but that she also wants to quit her job and move on to other things. Eve wishes her well...

In the bar, Shelley doesn't relish the thought of thumbing through the job pages, but Duggie tells her that he's going to be the laughing-stock, not her. Norris is convinced that he'll be asked to be the Godfather to little Ben, and Blanche accuses him of being too soft, while he accuses her of being cold. A male stranger appears, asking for Jack Duckworth who, Betty tells him, is off sick but she points him in the direction of Tyrone and Fiz. He introduces himself as Ian Thomson, a local reporter, who wants to do a piece on Terry. Tyrone turns down his request point-blank, even when some financial recompense is on offer. (Fiz doesn't seem to share Tyrone's qualms, but remains a bit quiet!)

Todd and Jason almost come to blows in their house, after Todd learns what Jason has said to their Mum, but Eileen arrives and stops a potential fight. She thanks Jason for being able to express his feelings earlier, and goes on to declare that she always hoped Dennis would come back to her.

In the Rovers, Geena and Shelley reflect about their future in the pub - friends again. Tyrone is still adamant that he'll give the reporter nothing about Terry, but Fiz wonders about the possible monetary reward...

Janice arrives to see Les, who's upstairs. She's come to see Les, and advises Toyah (whom she praises for her loyalty and support) and Sam to leave while she sees Les in private. When Les comes down, he tries to apologise to Janice, but she accuses him of just stumbling through life and she wishes she'd never met him in the first place.

Back at the Rovers, Geena asks Eve if she can stay on. Eve gladly agrees. Shelley also wants to stay on and Eve laughs heartily when she hears that Duggie has been gazumped. Toyah and Sam discuss the 'mess' and Toyah says that she's never seen her Mum so happy, with Dennis; they were so much in love, and her Mum will never forgive Les.

Back to Les and Janice, who are both heatedly discussing each other's perception of the events leading to Dennis' death. According to Janice, Les has never done anything decent in his whole life and, in fact, he couldn't even kill himself successfully. Les says that what he did was wrong, trying to kill himself, but Janice is of a different opiniion - he was RIGHT to try to kill himself and, further, she wishes that Les had died, not Dennis. Janice will always hate Les and will NEVER forgive him...

Friday 11 January

Fred is whispering into the phone at the Rovers, trying to get a sign-writer to alter the licensee's name over the pub door, as a surprise for Eve, who comes downstairs to interrupt his hush-hush plans. Eve opens the mail and discovers that a meeting is planned by the Licensed Victuallers' Association for that very evening. Eve will have to go along, if only to see the face of Jeff Marshall, her old boss at The Turk's Head. She must get her hair done.

Flowers are delivered to Geena at Dev's flat, from her Mum - looovely! Geena phones her Mum right away to thank her (adding the flight time) and gets all emotional when she realises she won't be wearing her wedding dress, while Dev can't wait to get hitched on a quiet beach. Geena looks wistful...

Vera is on the pub phone. She's calling the prison to find out about Terry, but they won't divulge any details. Jack tells her that the case will go to trial and Vera must leave things alone.

In the corner shop, Ken is explaining his worries about Anita's attentions, but Deirdre is certain that Ken can be trusted with his new-found friend. Just as he's leaving, Geena and Dev arrive and Ken wishes them luck. Deirdre advises Geena to have a couple of drinks before the ceremony to steady her nerves. It'll be a most important day for them. Deirdre goes on to remark that they "make a lovely couple" and she sheds a few tears. Geena thanks her for her good wishes and Dev says that "it means a lot".

A new face arrives in the Rovers - Melvyn Lush. He has come to 'do a job' but won't tell Shelley what the job is. He had expected to meet Fred. Ken comes in for a swift half and Shelley congratulates him on his latest admirer. Ken asks her what he should do and Shelley offers the advice that he should tell her straight, simple as that. Betty appears from the back room and takes Shelley to task for mixing dishcloths, which exchange is overheard by Melvyn, who then jumps to the conclusion that Betty Williams is the landlady!

Fred meets Eve as she comes out of the hairdresser's - he's got a surprise for her. However, she has a surprise for him - they've had an offer for their house, just a few thousand less than they want. Fred's surprise has to wait, for Eve spies Geena and Dev leaving for the airport and they go along to wish them well and see them off. Fred takes Eve along the street to the Rovers, eager to show her the newly painted sign, but instead of Eve's name, the name of Betty Williams is there, which causes no end of amusement for Blanche and Betty, while Eve fumes at the mistake. Fred is, once more, in the dog-house.

At the Duckworth house, Jack again counsels Vera to leave things be, but she is adamant that she is going to see the lawyer. There is a knock at the door. Vera thinks it'll be her taxi, but Terry is there, free from prison, with all charges dropped. A rare moment of happy families ensues!

Fred is on the phone at the Rovers once again, incensed at the sign-writer's error. In the bar, Blanche asks Eve if, since she's not the Queen of the street, is she then the Young Pretender? Eve, like a true Queen, is not amused! Fred is not amused either.

All is happy in the Duckworth home. (Terry had told Julie, the solicitor, to keep 'stumm' so that he could surprise his Mum and Dad.) They head for the Rovers to celebrate.

Anita breezes into Ken's house, with her book. She suggests lunch, but Ken has already eaten. She doesn't want to be disturbed while she and Ken talk about the book, but Ken assures her that Deirdre will not be back till the evening. Anita then removes her coat to reveal a sleeveless, low-cut royal blue dress, which seems to add to poor Ken's discomfiture about their meeting!

Melvyn sets to work to alter the sign, watched by Fred and Eve. The Duckworths arrive at the pub to celebrate, joined by Tyrone and Fiz.

Ken and Anita get down to looking at her book around the table. She is convinced that she and Ken are kindred spirits, radicals of the 60s, and she gets closer to him and more and more tactile. Anita gazes into Ken's eyes and he admits to her that he feels flattered by her attentions...

Vik drops Geena and Dev off at the airport. Just as Dev thinks they're now free of family and friends, Geena's Mum appears to see them off.

Chez Ken again. Anita feels so disappointed at Ken's rejection of her; he is, as she says, so bourgeois, not the radical she thought he was. She is tactile, she admits, but that's the way she is. However, about the book and any further meetings, she suggests that they should sleep on it - not literally, but metaphorically, and she leaves.

Geena, Dev and Mum have a coffee and Mum gives Geena a ring which was worn on their wedding days by her Mum and Grandma - Geena thinks it's lovely. Geena and her Mum share a hug and Mum even profers a handshake to Dev before leaving. Dev laughs at what he sees as Geena's Mum's pathetic attempt to split them up, but Geena has serious doubts about whether she's doing the right thing, going off to a beach to get married.

In the Rovers, Fred pays the sign-writer for his work. (Melvyn with a 'y', please!) Sunita tells Eve she's glad that Dev didn't get the pub and Eve thinks that that's the best news she's heard all day. Terry tells his Mum and Dad that he's off back to Huddersfield tomorrow and adds that he'll not be seeing Julie again.

The final call for their flight causes Geena to admit to Dev that, instead of a beach wedding in the sun, she'd prefer to have her wedding at home, with a big fuss made of her. Maybe they could still enjoy their holiday, without getting married there? Dev is not disappointed - he's devastated by this revelation. Maybe her Mum is right after all: they're not suited and, with that, he hands Geena the tickets, picks up his bag and walks off...

The episode opens with the love-birds, Geena and Dev, now sorted after the traumatic experience of Karen's trying to split them up. Kisses and cuddles all round, but Geena warns Dev that, if he's ever unfaithful to her, she'll take 'extreme measures'. Both profess their undying love for each other.

In the Barlow household, Deirdre is very cool towards Ken, who can't seem to come to terms with what Deirdre told him about the sad life she is leading with him. She tells him that she's just existing, not living. Ken does mention that the very mention of Dev seems to make Deirdre's eyes light up! Ken suggests that they ought to do more things together but, when that doesn't seem to work, he suggests that Deirdre goes to night school! Deirdre doesn't think much of that idea, and stomps off to her work... Blanche comes downstairs, but is warned by Ken not to comment!

In the Rovers back room, Geena is sitting at the table, wiping tears away. Eve comes in and pours them both another cuppa - time for Geena to tell her all that's been going on...

In Roy's Rolls, Gail wonders why Roy has got a 'light-box' on the counter. He tells her that he's suffering from SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) and that the 'light-box', which he's made from an old drawer, should help him. Gail thinks that a doctor's advice would help better. Richard and Duggie discuss the figures for the renovation of the house which Richard has acquired. Too high, says Richard.

In the Rovers, Steve and Vik appear and are served by Geena. After all, as Steve says, Karen has apologised, so everything's alright, isn't it? Karen enters, and she again apologises to Geena, who 'thanks' her for reminding her of her mother's plot to spoil her relationship with Dev.

Gail's house. Richard is pleased to have a whole hour with Gail with the house to themselves. However, his mobile rings, and he has to go and meet Duggie in half an hour. Gail warns Richard of the botched job he did in the Health Centre. The pair have only half an hour - we wonder how they can fill that time in...

In the Rovers, Blanche advises her daughter, Deirdre, to seek counselling from Marriage Guidance to save their relationship. After all, Blanche hasn't given up hope of another man in her life... Karen and Steve are now reconciled, after Karen's silly so-called fling with Dev. Eve sits down with them and warns Karen never to try anything like that again, for she knows what happened. Richard and Duggie talk business, and eventually agree to becoming partners in the renovation of the house which Richard has recently acquired. Double whiskys are called for!

At Anita's house, Ken catches her doing some housework, but she then concentrates all her attention on Ken, who regales her with his domestic problems with Deirdre. Anita assures Ken that he's no 'boring old fool', as Deirdre may think, and she suggests a couple of dry sherries.

Back at the Rovers, Richard and Duggie are celebrating their new-found partnership. Why not have a meal on Sunday together? A foursome is agreed. Gill appears and tries to patch-up her relationship with her daughter, Geena, but to no avail. Eve speaks up for Geena against her Mum, who goes off in the huff while Geena and Eve share a hug.

Gill just happens to meet Steve and the luckless Karen just after her exit from the pub. In a rather heated 'exchange of views', Gill accuses Karen of going-back on their 'agreement' and a punch-up is avoided, just!

Chez Anita again. She and Ken have partaken of a few sherries, Anita assuring Ken that he is 'an attractive man, both mentally and physically'. Ken seems glad to discuss his relationship with Deirdre with Anita, while Anita tells him that he is a delight to know...

In the cafe, Richard tells Gail of the planned Sunday-night dinner. Gail should have no worries - he's well aware of what's what in his partnership with Duggie! Karen is surprised to hear that Steve plans a weekend break for them both in Leeds.

Back at the Barlow's. Deirdre and Blanche come home to an empty house. Ken is not there. Where can he be? After what Deirdre has told him of what she feels, will be be swinging from the bannisters? No. Both agree that a cup of tea is called for. Deirdre wonders if Ken is having a torrid affair, but Blanche thinks that this is extremely unlikely - it's Ken!!

Anita and Ken share their sherry, and their secrets, with each other. Cosy! Ken wonders why Anita doesn't have many admirers, but she tells the hapless Ken that she 'doesn't want desperate men' and that she wants 'what Deirdre's got'. Anita snuggles up to Ken and tries to kiss him, but Ken rejects this and hurries off home...
