Tuesday 2 April

For those of you who have recently said they don't want to read the UK spoilers ... look away now!! Firstly I need help! Anyone in the UK reading this - Gareth who has been doing the Sunday and Tuesday/Wednesday reports has had to give up for a couple of months because of impending exams. So if anyone would like to help and do one or two reports a week, I would be very grateful.

Tonight, Ashley comes downstairs during the night and finds Maxine sitting up watching tv. She says she is a bit uptight about the birth. He suggests that she takes the day off work.

Richard hugs Gail. She says she has been having butterflies thinking about his proposal. She was hoping for a quick wedding in a registry office, whereas he wanted the "works". They agree to go ahead and aim for July.

Norris calls out to Matt. He says he realises that he has had personal problems. Norris wonders if they have been sorted. Matt tells him that they haven't and if they had he wouldn't tell him.

A furious Vik goes round to see Bobbi. Maria says she is not back.

Fiz is checking the girls work on her designs.

Karen says she is waiting to see Bobbi. When she comes in, she gives her a slap, and a fight starts between them. Hayley separates them until Mike comes in, and sends Bobbi off.

Richard takes Sally's books and offers to look through them for her.

Bobbi goes round to Vik at Streetcars. She says she wanted revenge because he dumped her. Eileen supports Vik that the company was on the verge of closure. Bobbi says she organised a party for him, and she humiliated herself.

Sol, another businessman comes to see Mike. He accuses Mike of stealing his designs.

Ashley tells Matt that he is worried about Maxine. However he does offer to help Matt with his problems.

Sol accuses Mike of deliberately copying his designs. He wants £10,000 compensation. Mike refuses and they threaten each other's business.

Mike sees Fiz and asks her if it was her design. She denies copying anyone. He then sacks her.

Richard suggests to Sally that she has some loss leaders. He asks her if she has anymore funds to invest in the business. He offers to help her to re-mortgage the property.

Bobbi is annoyed at Maria for telling everyone about what she did.

Molly comes to the pub and finds Matt drunk. She says they have had to bring in a locum to cover his shift.

Mike suggests to Rita that she may like to pack up and retire to the sun. He tells her how he almost got sued.

Sarah has been given a place at the nursery by the council. However it is the other side of Weatherfield. Richard tells her and David that he and their mum are planning the wedding. He tells them that will make them their step dad. Sarah says she is happy provided he gives her a lift to the nursery. David says they have made their minds up so his opinion doesn't count.

Matt demands another drink. Eve tries to persuade him to go home.

Fiz tells the girls that she didn't copy the designs on purpose.

Richard goes to speak to David, "man to man". He is worried that if Richard is his step dad, he will boss him around. They agree to sort out each others problems together.

Mike receives a fax from the solicitors. He is being sued for copyright infringement.

Bobbi comes to see Mike to apologies. Mike sacks her.

Molly invites Matt to her place to sober up He doesn't want to go. Norris comes in says he had to have an appointment with a locum, which he didn't like.

Matt sobs as Ashley comes to take him to his home.

Bobbi tells Karen and Steve that Baldwin has given her the sack. Karen says that she is going to make sure that nobody wants her.

Maxine comes down and wonders why Matt is on the couch. Ashley says he feels sorry for him.

Friday 5 April

While Dr Matt sleeps it off on the couch, Maxine tells Ashley that she's uneasy about his staying with them. However, Ashley thinks it's a great idea - what could be better than having a mate, who's a doctor, staying with them?

In the cafe, Sally asks Jason to open up the shop, which is still not doing well. Jason thinks they need a gimmick, but Sally would settle for a customer. Roy has decided to put his name forward for chairperson of the Weatherfield Historical Society, but wonders if his shoulders are broad enough to take the 'burden of office'! Hayley offers her encouragement. Jason agrees to buy the 60 Easter eggs from Kirk for 25 pounds after some haggling. Delivery to Sally's shop immediately.

In Streetcars, gloom is the order of the day, as yet another school run has been cancelled.

Matt wakens from his drunken sleep with a well-earned hangover. Ashley persuades him to stay with them - how can Maxine refuse, or even be seen not to be keen on the idea?

Mike spells out his worries to his staff at Underworld - he's being sued, and if he loses the court case, he'll be ruined and his staff will be on the dole.

Audrey, on her way to the salon, spies Matt leaving the Peacock home. The eggs have been delivered to Sally's shop, but Tyrone is not impressed with Kirk's business expertise - buying price, 107 pounds; selling price, 25 pounds. Tyrone mutters that Kirk should have been in charge of the Millennium Dome! Bobbi attempts, unsuccessfully, to apologies to Vikram, who only wants her as far away from him as possible.

Sally arrives at her shop and discovers the eggs which Jason has bought. She can't afford them. Worse is to come - the shop radio is not working. Martin arrives and Sally asks him for a favour - can he look at the brochures which Richard has given her, about remortgaging her house, and offer his advice?

In the salon, a tearful Maxine confides to Audrey that the baby she's carrying isn't bringing her any happiness. In fact, the situation is a nightmare - Matt wants her and the baby - and her life, and her marriage, are in ruins. Audrey offers to speak to the doctor ('I'd like to doctor him', she states) but Maxine insists that it's her problem and she'll have to sort it out herself.

In the Rovers, Blanche is warning Deirdre to stay away from the house, for she's invited Archie for dinner and she doesn't want to be disturbed... Fred hears from Mike about the problems at the factory. Fred is going to see his accountant about something, but he won't tell Eve about his plans. Archie and Blanche have a quiet lunch. Archie is disappointed the hear that Ken and Deirdre can't make it, for they're going to see one of those films 'with writing at the bottom' because 'the actors can't be bothered to learn English'. Archie smiles in anticipation of being alone with Blanche. Bobbi tells Maria that she's leaving, for good. They hug. Deirdre and Ken discuss Blanche's assignation with Archie. Ken thinks it's 'quite sweet' and adds 'after all, you're only old once'.

Fiz approaches Mike in the street to ask for her job back. Mike refuses, and smiles A taxi arrives for Bobbi and Vikram and Steve watch her departure and wave goodbye. Vikram allows himself a rare smile. Eileen joins the pair, only to hear Vikram asking for an apology. None is forthcoming.

Maxine arrives home and fixes a smile before talking to Matt, whom she wants to leave immediately and not ruin her marriage or Ashley's happiness. Matt thinks that Ashley ought to face up to reality, but Maxine continues to plead with Matt, who'll think about it...

In the cafe, Vikram and Steve are still worried about the loss of various school runs, but Jason thinks he might be able to help... Roy is asking Ken ('one of Weatherfield's greatest orators') for his advice on his speech to the Historical Society, but Ken, unfortunately, has no time to listen to the speech as he has to meet Deirdre. Hayley arrives and offers to listen to the speech instead. Poor Hayley!

Ashley manages to persuade Matt to stay with Maxine and him. How can he refuse, for there's a football match on tv and, as a bonus, Ashley has ordered a Chinese carry-out for dinner? Maxine can't see any way out of the mess.

In the Rovers, Martin tells Sally that he's amazed at the deal Richard has concocted for her. Not good at all. A smiling (yes, smiling!) Vikram appears and buys Jason a drink, while handing over 60 pounds for the eggs he has bought from him. (A free Easter egg for every child on a school run.) Tyrone and Kirk are aghast at how their business expertise has been outdone!

Blanche and the (rather corpulent!) Archie are finishing their dinner chez Ken and Deirdre. [Archie must like his chuck, chuck!!] Never mind the dishes, Blanche suggests. They can go into the front room and 'get down to it'. Archie seems to think that's a grand idea...

Ken and Deirdre are just about to head off home from the Rovers when Roy and Hayley arrive. Roy is now the chairperson of the Historical Society (he was the only nominee), and is duly congratulated by Ken and Deirdre. Fred has been to his accountant and he will sign over the Rovers to Eve, for tax reasons.

Deirdre and Ken arrive home, only to hear voices from the front room - 'that's the wrong position'; 'it's the only one I know'; 'get your leg over like this'; 'we'll try some music'. Ken and Deirdre open the door and see Blanche and Archie dancing. (Well, what were you expecting?)

Again, chez Peacock. They've run out of milk, so Ashley goes to get some. Matt confides to the hapless Maxine that, instead of going, he's staying, for her and his baby. No matter what she says, or does, he's going to be the baby's father.

Sunday 7 April

A bit of a change round with your reporters. Gareth has had to temporarily suspend "duties" because of his exams, so tonight you have me, and tomorrow ... you will have to wait!!

Maxine, Matt and Ashley are sitting with football on the tv. Matt and Ashley are also reading a paper, and Maxine wonders how Ashley can do both. Matt says it is a man's thing!

Sally's radio in the hardware shop is not working properly. Jason says he will fix it.

Emma goes into the hardware shop to buy a smoke detector. Jason also sells her a carbon dioxide detector as well, and then electrical socket protector ... door protectors ....

Eve comes round to Maxine. She is surprised that Matt is there. She thinks Maxine looks tired, and then Maxine bursts into tears.

Mike tells Fred that he has cut his profits to the bone. He says he sells underwear the cheapest in Weatherfield, but he is worried about the business and the threat of legal proceedings hanging over him. He then has an idea.

Maxine says she is tired and suggests that Matt and Ashley go out. Matt thinks it is a better idea if he brings in some beers, and then they could all be together for the night.

Deirdre, Ken and Blanche are waiting in the Rovers for Archie to arrive. Blanche says he is never late, but with two minutes before the arranged meeting time Deirdre and Ken have their doubts. Then with seconds to go, he arrives.

Charlie comes back and is met by Emma. Ken comes over and says he wants to talk about a pupil. Charlie suggests they talk about him some other time.

Charlie sees Matt going into Maxine and Ashley's house. She leaves her bags with Emma.

Matt comes in and believes Ashley has gone out. Maxine tells him that it is doing her head in with Matt staying there. Then there is a knock on the door from Charlie. She believes that Matt has move in permanently. A row starts. Ashley hearing the noise comes downstairs and suggests he and Maxine go to the Rovers so Matt and Charlie can talk. Charlie interrupts and tells Matt to tell the truth why he is staying there.

Charlie goes back to Emma to collect her bags. Emma asks what is going on, Charlie doesn't reply.

Ashley wants to know why Charlie was so upset. Maxine bursts into tears and confesses to Ashley that the slept with Matt.

Mike invites the other businessman to discuss a plan whereby Underworld makes the disputed designs for this other businessman and obviously for some financial consideration, and he must drop the legal charges. They think it is a good idea.

Sally tells Steve that her business is so bad that she may have to let Jason go. Steve sympathizes about his crisis, but says he has not had to make any staff redundant. Jason comes in and says how much he has sold to Emma.

Maxine and Ashley are in silence thinking over what has happened. He wants to know why she did it. Ashley then realises that Charlie already knew. Drunken Matt says that they had feelings for each other at the time, and they still do have them. Maxine is shocked and denies it all. Maxine tries to convince Ashley it is his baby. Ashley chucks Matt out of the house.

Charlie hears the row from next door, and turns up the music to drown it out.

Matt talks of betrayal. Then suddenly Maxine gets pains as she goes into labour prematurely. Ashley reiterates to Matt to get away.

Deirdre is worried that Blanche is not back from her date. Ken has a more laid-back attitude. However Deirdre is worried about her mother. Archie and Blanche arrive at the front door. They are about to part when Archie questions why he is not being invited in for coffee. Blanche says that he doesn't really want coffee. He agrees that he doesn't want to come in just for coffee.

The ambulance arrives for Maxine. Ashley tells Matt to stay away and get out of his house.

Ashley goes off with Maxine in the ambulance.

Monday 8 April

Welcome to the first of our guest reviewers -

Hi there - it's me filling in for a while. Those abroad will no doubt have read about the pomp and circumstance surrounding the late Queen Mother's funeral proceedings. I have to admit to queuing for 4.5hrs to pay my respects besides her coffin. All terribly British but boy do we do it well!

To more mundane matters................

The episode opens with Maxine puffing and blowing - yes folks she's in labour. Ash is besides her in the labour ward. She tells him that what she did was terrible but she knows it's his baby - won't be long now says the midwife. Things grind to a halt and Maxine is concerned that there's something wrong with the baby and she's being punished. The midwife reassures her and says she just has to wait.

Some time later.

Ash goes for a cup of tea and who should turn up at the hospital but Dr Matt clutching a bouquet. He rushes to the reception desk and asks for Mrs Peacock. Wants to know how she is and whether he can visit. When questions he admits he's the family's GP. The desk say "fathers only". He turns away to be confronted by Ash who puts him up against the wall and wants to know what he's doing there. "what kind of doctor sleeps with his patient" demands Ash. " trusted you" he says - "you should have known better - stay away - that's my baby!"

To which Matt retorts "face facts". "Max doesn't want anything from you - just go and take your flowers" Matt says "This is not over by a long way" and departs.

Next, Fred turns up at the hospital, having been informed by Rita that Maxine went into labour last night. He mutters "I were that worried" and says to Ash "You don't look right". Ash responds by saying "Baby's not due for another 2 months". Ash rejoins Max who is pushing for England with much squeaking. It's a Boy! "Will he be all right" is what Max wants to know. The midwife wraps the baby up and gives him to Max. "Hello little man; look Ash it's our baby". The midwife apologies for taking the infant away because he needs an incubator.

A little later Ash tells Max that he's called my Dad and your Mum. Max tells him he "was brilliant". Ash retorts "Makes up for not being there when you conceived!" "Kept it a secret you did" "How can I ever believe a word you say?"

Meanwhile over at the garage Kevin and Sam have to listen to Tyrone's tirade about Maria who he has just seen get out of a Merc - what model the others want to know. Tyrone says that he just doesn't want Mara to fall into bad company. Three different cars in a week he's seen her get out off. It transpires that Maria knows a chap who works for an upmarket used car showroom and he gets to drive home in different models.

Charlie on waking downs a glass of water looking decidedly hungover. She hurries down the street when Ken stops her. Let's chat at lunchtime. Whilst the class is assembling they talk about their teacher's bust up with her husband. In recess Charlie is alone in her classroom. Ken pops in and takes one look at her and suggests "as a friend" that she should go home and that "as a colleague" he can take over her class - that's what he's there for. We next glimpse Charlie indoors at home - removing a quarter bottle of vodka from her handbag. Next we see her in the Rovers. Ken enters and is surprised. "What's this" says he "playing truant?".

That morning at the Barlows breakfast table Ken and Deirdre are discussing the late homecoming of Blanche who appears and is surprised by their concern. Deirdre says that Blanche should let them know when she's going to be home late and indicate what time she'll be back. Blanche answers "I thought you'd be glad ". Deirdre subtly says "You've hardly been in" "I'm surprised at your age - you are 66"!

Over at Roys Rolls Hayley and Mike are having a breakfast meeting - well a cup of coffee anyway. Mike is telling her about the extra workload now that he's been sub-contacted to make basques for the chap who wanted to sue. Hayley is pleased that the threat of litigation is removed but concerned at the amount of work and the low pricing policy. Well says Mike either they work and get this order out or I go bust. Whatever. A machine shortage is mentioned. Hayley asks if Fizz can have her job back. Mike prevaricates but in the end agrees she can have one more chance "on trial".

Later on Deirdre buys a light-bulb in Sally's Shop. Jason tries to tempt her to purchase other goods. He is of the opinion that Sally should diversify into garden equipment. She admits she can't afford the stock and that reluctantly she'll have to let Jason go and gives him 2wks wages. Naturally he is disgruntled. Late in the Rovers he says to Tyrone that really he might just as well be on the dole and Sally hasn't got a clue how to run a shop.

Tuesday 9 April

Sorry but the tape missed who wrote and directed this episode.

Audrey and Fred both arrive to see Maxine in hospital. Fred asks where Ashleigh is. Maxine tells him he hasn't come yet. Fred says that he damn well should be there and it's not like him! He's concerned that there's something the matter with the baby, and Maxineās tell him he 's fine. Audrey sends him off to the special care unit. Maxineās tells Audrey that ash won't be coming, and that he's so hurt. Audrey tells her to give him time and that he'll come round. Fred tells the baby in special care that he's the baby's grandfather, and utters the immortal lines 'hello little babbie'. He asks if the baby will be alright and she says that he's a good weight, he should be out in three weeks.

Archie shuttleworth has asked Blanche away for a weekend to Blackpool, and Deirdre says that he has a cheek. Deirdre tells her that she should be careful. Blanche asks if she should play hard to get at her time of life, and that Deirdre took no notice of her when she was younger, so why should she take any notice of Deirdre.

Jason gets up late and is blasted by Eileen who has been to see sally in her break. She tells Jason to go look for work, and he goes across to ask Kevin if there are any jobs, as Sally had to let him go. Kevin says sorry, but if sally is short of money she will come mithering to him, so he couldn't take Jason on. Roy tells Hayley that he wants to set his stamp as president of the Historical society. something that is truly memorable, like restoring some event that took place in Weatherfield.

A marvelous little scene starts about Christopher Columbus, potatoes and chips and tobacco and Jack Duckworth. Fred goes to see Ashleigh, he tells him he should be celebrating, instead of having a face like a rabbit licking vinegar off lettuce! ashley tries to interrupt him, but Fred is in full flow. He tells him the baby will want for nothing, he 's now realised he's got responsibilities. he says it might end up as a real family business, but maybe he's taking too much for granted, maybe it will be University, Butchering or if that's not big enough a solicitor or a Dr! Ashleigh's face says it all, when Fred says that his life is set up for the next few decades, and he's the girth of his loins.

Ken see Charlie in the Rovers, she's the worse for wear with drink, and Ken tells her Miss Johnson was looking for her. She gives him 10/10 for not splitting on her, but ken tells her she has problems and it would be best coming from Charlie.

Mat goes to see Maxine in hospital , and tells her that nothing has changed. He still wants her and the baby. Max threatens him with if she looses Ashleigh and her family , he will loose his career. She tells him to keep away. She hates what she's done to ashley, but hates him even more.

Charlieās goes to find Matt at the surgery. Sarah sees that she is drunk, and ask if everything is OK. Charlie thinks his staff are covering for him, and tells them to tell him to go to hell. Sarah repeats the scene to Candice in school, and is overheard by Miss Johnson. she asks ken what is going on, but he says that it is just hear say.

Audrey goes to see Ashleigh. She tells him she knows what's been going on, and that it happened only once. Matt took advantage when Maxine had had too much to drink. Ashleigh tells him that Matt thinks the child is his, Audrey says he's just trying to split him and Maxine up, and he's succeeding by all accounts. Ash cries that he's lost everything, and that he loves Maxine. Audrey tells him that he's throwing it all away, and that he should be down at the hospital as they both need him very much. Ashley sobs in Audrey's arms.

Friday 12 April

Breakfast at Sally's. While Rosie and Sophie squabble, Sally worriedly reads a letter she's just received. Kevin arrives and offers to lend Sally some money, which she refuses as the shop is just going through a 'lean patch'.

Sarah and Candice arrive late for Ms Ramsden's English class and they are given poetry books to hand out. Charlie tells the pupils to choose a poem to talk about, while she exits the class for a quick snifter of vodka in the staff room.

In the Kabin, Blanche is regaling Norris and Rita about her imminent trip to Blackpool with Archie, who knows how to treat a lady - they'll be traveling in style, not on public transport. Blanche pities Rita's being on her own, with a lonely flat and dinners for one. Exit Blanche, very happy... Ashleigh comes in, not, as Norris thinks, for chocolates for Maxine, but only for a paper. They offer him congratulations on his being a new father, but he doesn't respond.

Charlie arrives back in the classroom and she begins to read the short poem which Candice has chosen - all about a broken relationship and the wounds and scars it has left. Candice profers her comment that the writer needs a doctor, while Sarah comments that the poem obviously deals with a couple who have split up. Candice then 'suggests' to Ms Ramsden that, maybe, the man has being seeing someone else and that's why he's been kicked out... Charlie is furious and demands that the class write answers to questions in the book, in silence. Sarah whispers to Candice, and Charlie orders her out of the room.

In the cafe, Roy asks Gail which period of history is her favourite, but history was never one of Gail's pet subjects. Sally confides to Gail that her new landlord has just doubled the rent for the shop and, yes, things are really serious.

Charlie again exits her classroom and Sarah asks if she can return inside. No. Instead, Charlie gives her detention on Monday, and storms off (to the staffroom?) just as Ken passes and witnesses her class enjoying the brief absence of their teacher...

In the Rovers, Ashley arrives for a pint, but Fred tells Eve to refuse to serve him, as he ought to be with Maxine in hospital. Ashley leaves, without his pint. Fred can't understand why his son is behaving the way he is; maybe another wee chat is what's needed...

In the Rovers, Blanche awaits the arrival of Archie and assures her daughter and Rita that she'll be fine, and not ashamed to use her real name! Archie appears - her carriage awaits...

Ken appears home for lunch, just as Archie and Blanche prepare to depart for Blackpool in his hearse, much to the amusement of Kevin, who has heard of folk booking their headstone in advance, but never a hearse! The happy couple leave, with Archie assuring Deirdre that he'll look after Blanche as if she were his own wife... Deirdre wonders what he means. Ken speaks to Sarah and Candice about what happened in school, and Candice complains that what Ms Ramsden did was 'out of order' and that she was drunk. Ken tries to explain, but Candice is of the opinion that teachers always stick together, no matter what.

Chez Peacock. A quiet and somber Ashley listens in silence as Fred tries to get him to go to the hospital to be with his wife and son. Fred has made the mistake of not being with his son as he grew up, so he understands. (No, he doesn't!)

Back in the Rovers, Deirdre agonises (she does this so well, eh?) about her Mum, but Ken is more concerned about Charlie's situation. Sally tells Gail that, although her financial position is parlous, she won't 'throw the towel in' and give people that satisfaction. Ken explains to Deirdre about Charlie's problems in school. Norris and Roy appear, talking about Roy's plans to stage some historical event in the summer, just as Ken is leaving, and Roy asks him about any historical events in Weatherfield. Ken suggests the English Civil War.

Ashley arrives at the hospital, but Maxine is asleep. He goes off to see the baby.

In a school corridor, Sarah and Candice complain to an obviously tipsy Ms Ramsden about her treatment of Sarah that morning. Charlie turns on them, absolutely furious, and tells the girls that they'll either end up pregnant or working in some factory, so why should she bother. Ken arrives, and tries to calm things down, while Charlie disappears into her classroom for another few swigs of vodka. Ken tries to reason with her, but the lady is not for listening and accuses Ken of being patronising to her. After all, she reminds him that she is the Head of Department. Ken leaves.

Hospital. Ashley stands alone, silently, beside the incubator where the little one lies. He puts his hand into the machine and caresses the baby's hand.

In the cafe, Deirdre is buying a sweet treat for herself (the only treat she gets these days is when she provides one herself - aawwww!!). Roy is poring over a history book and he's found reference to a local battle during the English Civil War, which excites him, but he's wakened from his reverie by Vera's throwing a tea towel at him.

Back in school, in Ms Ramden's class. Candice passes a hand-written note to Sarah, brief and to the point - AS A NEWT. Ms Johnson, the Head Teacher, comes in and asks Charlie to help her with something in her office. Now. (By this time, Charlie is quite drunk.)

Ashley is still beside the incubator when Maxine appears. She seems delighted to see him, but the feeling is not mutual. He feels utterly betrayed - the baby could be anyone's. Maxine tries to assure him of her love for him, but he feels nothing for her any more...

School again, and Charlie comes out of Ms Johnson's office, just as Sarah and Candice are passing. Charlie accuses them of carrying tales, but Ken arrives and admits that it wasn't the girls who reported her to the Headmistress - he reported her. Charlie at first can't believe what Ken's just said but she then tells him that she's been suspended, and will probably lose her job. Thanks for your help, Ken!

Sunday 14 April

And our guest reviewer today is ....

The story opens with Deirdre and Ken at breakfast discussing Charlie Ramsden's suspension. She wants to go for a Sunday morning drive, but he has to prepare next week's lessons. Deirdre wonders when Blanche will return from Blackpool.

Ashley arrives at the hospital to pick up Maxine. She asks him to come along with her to see the baby before they leave, but he tells her he'll wait in the car. Ken nips across the road to see if Charlie is OK. En route, he meets Matt and tells him about the suspension. Behind them, Ash and Max arrive and sneak into the house. Maxine wants to talk, but he gets a rather fetching evil look in his eye and tells her no. Fred calls round, asking about the name of his grandson, but he does not have one as yet. He offers to take the Peacocks out for lunch, but Maxine isn't in the mood. Ashley goes with Uncle Fred for a pint instead.

Audrey and Maxine share a cuppa. The new mum believes that if only the baby was there at home, things would be different. Fred tries to get Ashley to open up about what's bothering him, but he prefers to drink. As Eve feeds the Elliott men hotpot, Martin pops in to offer her congrats to Ashley. Matt follows Emma into the Rovers. Fred wants him to wet the baby's head, but that evil looks comes over Ashley's face again, so he makes his excuses.

Matt tells Emma about Charlie's drinking and suspension and asks her to check things out. Charlie tells her that everything in her life is wrecked - job, life, marriage. She's going to start a new life away from Weatherfield. Emma reports back to Matt that Charlie's knocked her drinking on the head

Hayley admires Roy's pot-scrubbing abilities while he composes an ode to all the time-saving devices not available in the Civil War. He discusses the problems involved with staging a re-enactment of the Civil War. Hayley tells him just to find a local skirmish and highlight that.

Sunita suggests that Deirdre take a page out of Blanche's book and whisk Ken off for a dirty weekend. Blanche and Archie have returned and are waltzing outside Number 10 while Ken is inside lending books to Roy. As they come out, Archie turns to Roy and says "5'11" ... I'm not wrong, am I?" as Roy quickly scurries past into the Rovers.

Audrey leaves when Emma comes round with a present for Baby Peacock (aka Baby Ramsden) and tells Maxine all about Charlie. Eve takes a drunken Fred upstairs whilst Audrey tries to convince Ashley to go home. Sunita asks Blanche where they stayed in Blackpool and contrary to the impression that Blanche gave of a five star hotel, they actually were in Archie's caravan (all open plan!).

Matt finally plucks up the courage to call on Charlie, who doesn't toss anything at him. She asks after the baby and Matt replies that he's fine, as far as he knows. Maxine shows Emma's present to Ash who retorts that he doesn't know why she's bothering, and suggests that she forwards it to Matt.

Kevin turns up at Number 13 to pick up the gurrls and finds Sally doing her books. He offers to lend a hand and after looking, tells her he can't see any way for her to improve her money situation. She replies that if she can only hang on until Spring Bank Holiday (beginning of May), she'll be OK. She asks him for the loan of £2,500, but he only has 200 quid to spare. She tells him not to worry, she'll figure something out. Sally asks Rita to loan her more cash, but Rita sees it as chucking good money after bad and refuses to bail her out.

She tells Sally that lots of people go out of business and that there's no shame in it.

Sally goes into work but brushes off Martin as "just someone I used to sleep with" when he pops into the shop for a natter. After he leaves, she puts up some signs and, walking away as the credits roll, we see that they say "Closing Down Sale - Everything must go!".

Monday 15 April

Spring has definitely arrived in the UK and the weather is being typical for April - bright sunny skies and sudden short sharp showers. Doom and gloom tomorrow when Chancellor Brown tells us how much more of our hard earned cash he's taking away in direct and stealth taxes!

Report by Amanda Soppit

The scene opens at the happy(?) Peacock house, Ash is scrabbling around looking for pain killers (to dull his thundering hangover). Maxine is chirpily fluttering around and suggests Ash goes back to bed then after a rest he could come with her to the hospital. Ash mutters that there's work to be done. Max counters with she thought Boris could manage. She notices that the baby pictures are on the arm of the chair and is delighted because she assumes Ash has been looking at them. No! he has not. He's going for a drink. Baby needs both of us she implores, not his fault, don't blame him, blame me. Ash stomps off saying he needs time to think. Later Fred asks Ash "How's my Grandson?" and then proceeds to lecture on the topic of "Family First", Ash is back in the pub again, still not having been to the hospital.

Over at Weatherfield Comprehensive, Charlie exits the Head's room and starts towards the outer door. A pupil suggests that she's going to wrong way. A colleague commiserates with Charlie saying is she sure this is what she wants. "Yes decidedly I need a fresh start". Ken hovers in the background. He's told by the Head that he will be taking on more of Mrs Ransom's classwork. Ken enters the classroom and announces they will continue with Romeo & Juliet, Candice can read the part of Juliet - she's not impressed, says she's a wimp. The morning drags by. Ken speaks to Charlie on the Street and says he didn't think it would come to this thought she'd just get a talking to. Well, says Charlie I've already had that so resignation is the only answer. Ken concedes he didn't know she'd been warned before and is concerned about a reference. Oh says Charlie's I'll get one of those it's all part of the deal. That evening Matt calls on her to find the rent book on the table. " I've told the landlord I'm leaving and suggested you might like to take on the lease." "Where are you going" asks Matt. "To Mary's in the short term, I need to think things through" replies Charlie. "We've been married 10 yrs - is this it, here's the key - bye"? "There's plenty I could say but I won't and I'm leaving tomorrow". Matt looks thunderstruck at this news.

Roy Cropper is a happy chappy, knee deep in roundheads and cavaliers. He is determined to re-enact the local skirmish and all that stands in his way is the agreement of the Historical Society, he has even set a date - the Jubilee Holiday (that's June 4). Having enlisted Ken's help, Roy goes round to the Barlow household to borrow some historical books not that Ken would lend them to anyone but feels they will be safe with Roy. Having obtained the Society's agreement Roy is firing on all cylinders and after pouring over a copy of an ancient local map decides the Red Rec's the venue for him. Why is it called Red? Probably because of all the blood that was spilt there in 1642. Haley worries that if the skirmish is to be held on June 4, which is to celebrate a monarchists reign, isn't that wrong? No says Roy it just shows how far we've come in 360 years. He is determined that it wont just be a case of dressing up and that the events should be historically accurate.

Down at the surgery Gale tries to convince Matt that he should take a few days off and that they can get a locum in. She's excited. It's her birthday and Richard has booked a table at Delfin's (expensive). She fixes for David to spend the night with Martin. Later in the pub for a birthday drink Gale thinks she should have a word with Ash to see if he can cheer Matt up! Audrey counsels against this (and we all know why don't we?). She raises her glass to her daughter and wishes Gale a "Happy Birthday".

Sally is busily thumping her calculator. The Final Closing Down Sale - Everything Must Go is in progress. Eileen pops in to commiserate and says she knew things were bad but surely not this bad? Roy commiserates with Sally over the rent rise. Norris says it's cheaper at the DIY Superstore and Sally should have consulted him at the start and then they'd have had forward planning and projections! Sally's promoting "2 for the price of 1" in an effort to shift her £25,000 worth of stock. She tries to persuade Les to purchase some pan scourers. What does he want with those? The only day a pan will get dirty in his house is Sunday, otherwise it's take aways or fish & chips for him. Martin pops in to lend his support (he that hadn't got £10,000 to lend Sally!). Vera is studying a new fangled mop, one that's head is oblong with a sponge, to her it's not a proper mop and will never get in the corners. Patiently Sally explains about wringing out the sponge and opening the rectangle out flat, turning it so it will go in squared corners. Vera is not convinced and happily agrees to go to the DIY Superstore where Blanche assures her they've got a range of proper mops. Audrey buys some light bulbs but Norris declines 2 for 1 rubber gloves saying untreated rubber brings him out in a rash! Sally can't believe the constant trickle of people who have come to see her downfall, "just like an audience at a road accident" she declares! A man from Weatherfield Hardware Supplies (who own the dreaded DIY Superstore) calls in and leaves his card with Sally, saying he's prepared to buy the whole of her stock. After some thought Sal phones him and he comes back. Ultimately he agrees a price of £17,000 for the lot and gives her a cheque for £8,500, half now and half on collection tomorrow.

Martin and David are at the street door to his flat. David wants to watch a video with his Dad before they turn in. The two are slumped on the sofa, David's head resting on Martin's shoulder but he manfully pulls himself together. Meanwhile downstairs in the hardware shop the unreliable radio (rewired by Jason?) is smoldering into life and before long sparks appear, then flames. Before you know it the whole place is ablaze. Richard and Gale returning from the birthday dinner are appalled (as they know Martin and David are in the flat above). The scene closes with Richard dialing 999 for the Fire Brigade and urging them to "come quick".

Yet another Tuesday night episode this week (more football tomorrow I wonder?)

Tuesday 16 April

Today's report comes from Janice Gaffney

We pick up from last nights episode, where the fire is blazing in the hardware shop. Martin and David are asleep in the flat above.

Matt asks Charlie has she told Mary everything. Charlie says that she wants her life back on track, and Matt reminds her that she knew it was a mistake moving to C.S. Matt tells Charlie that he thought it was important to live within the community, to get to know everyone. Charlie tells him he still can after she has gone. Matt apologises to Charlie again.

Max and Ash are heading for bed, and Maxine asks him not to sleep in the spare room, and that the baby is going to be home soon, and they haven't talked about things, not even a name. Ashleigh, shouts at her why doesn't she name it after the baby's father. And storms off upstairs. Charlie asks Matt when will he be moving back into the house, and he says he won't. That it will be a relief for Max and Ashley, not having to see them all the time. Matt apologises again to Charlie, and tells her it was a one-off, and not a relationship. He was wrong, and it's unforgivable. Charlie tells him that she wants to forgive him, but she may not ever trust him again, but that they should give it another try, as they might regret it in later years. She wants a fresh start, but not on her own.

Gail and Richard are driving home from their night out and Gail shouts at Richard to stop the car, the shop is on fire, but David is upstairs with Martin. Gail bangs on the front door, Richard phones for the fire brigade. The shop window blows out, and Richard disappears from view, under the rubble. He appears unscathed, and starts battering the front door of the flat. Matt goes to help, and they carry Martin and David from the fire suffering from smoke inhalation. The whole street is up, Peter wakes Roy and Haley - then Sally appears asking what is happening.

We find the next morning gazing at the front of the burnt-out shop. Jason and Eileen wander across, and Jason says it wasn't her fault. Sally says she wishes she knew if it was, and Jason blames Duggie Ferguson, for faulty electricals saying he had a reputation as being dodgy. She gives the 800UKp deposit back to the guy that was going to buy her stock, telling him she's got nothing now.

Matt stops Ashley in the Street and asks after the baby. Ashley glares at him and tells him to go to hell - then everyone will be better off. Emma comes to see Charlie and is surprised at all the activity. Charlie tells Emma that there's a chance for her and Matt, but they'll have to leave C.S behind. Emma says that she will really miss her.

Martin and David have been in overnight in hospital, and Richard and Gail bring them back home. Martin says he will need to check on his flat, and get a room in the nurses home. David begs him to stay with them. Gail and Richard agree, though Martin tries every excuse. Gail tells Richard later that it was very kind of him to offer Martin a roof over his head and that it won't be easy.

Audrey is joking about the play with real swords. Roy tells her it will be a historical reenactment, a serious examination of history. Norris offers his services to Roy , and Roy makes him asst Director.

Charlie is heading for her car, when Matt shouts after her and ask what time does she have to be at Mary's? When she tells him five o'clock, he says that will give them plenty time to stop at the hotel and pick up his things. they drive off, as Maxine watches them from across the road. She later sees Emma, who tells her they have left the Street for good. Max repeats this to Ashley, and tells him it will make it easier to get back to the way things were with the Ramsdens gone, Ashley sneers that that will never happen, how can it?

Eileen brings a bottle of wine over to Sally's. She tells her the kids are with Kevin as she's had to sort some stuff out, Insurance and the Fire brigade assessor, but they aren't telling Sally anything. She tells Eileen that she should be glad to get rid of the place, and that she'd been determined to make it work after Danny left her, but everything comes apart in her hands, everything turns rotten, her marriage, every relationship, and all she can see is one more miserable disappointment after the other. She sobs in Eileen's arms.

Wednesday 17 April

Today I present you all, for the very first time ..... Lillith

-----

We arrive in the street at Chez Peacock where Maxine is giving Fred tea and toast for breakfast while telling him the latest news on his "grandson". Maxine announces she's off to the hospital which forces Ashley to say he'll come too as he's put on the spot in front of Fred. Fred asks again what the baby's name is and Maxine says they've a few in mind and will let him know as soon as they do. Fred leaves and Maxine thanks Ashley for coming with her as the midwife is "asking questions", he tells her straight it's for appearances only.

In the Platts Martin is making himself at home stinking the house out cooking eggy bread for them all for breakfast while Gail and Richard gently laugh about it behind Martin's back. The phone rings and Richard takes the opportunity to ask Martin if the insurance has been sorted out on his flat yet. Gail comes off the phone and announces that Matt Ramsden and Charlie have left and when she says left she means left everything. House, surgery, area the lot.

Sally's breakfast guest is Rita. Sal's having a little weep about what might have been while looking at old photos and Rita tells her the fire wasn't her fault. Sally starts on how awful her life is and how it's all her own fault. Rita points out that she has 2 lovely kids, a nice house and wasn't the insurance coming? That would help her surely. Anyway she could always get another stall on the market. Sally goes off on one again and Rita tells her to pull herself together, to look forward not back and to learn from her mistakes.

At the Rovers the phone rings and Eve picks it up. She's all flustered and tells whoever it is that it could have been someone else who answered the phone. The person on the other end wants to see her but she's reluctant. Fred arrives and Eve turns all business like and puts the phone down.

Lunchtime at the Platts. Martin's having a kip on the sofa till Richard comes in talking loudly on his mobile phone. Richard asks if he should leave but Martin says no. Subtly Richard asks if he's looked in to nurses quarters but Martin says they're full and no, he's nowhere else to go. Richard suggests going back to his flat. Martin goes upstairs in a huff to sleep in David's bed.

Back at the pub Fred's bending Audrey's ear about poor Max and Ashley not being able to bring their baby home. Audrey mentions in the dim and distant past the baby wouldn't have survived and then how much she needs Maxine back at work as Maria can't cope. (Wouldn't Max be entitled to loads of time off by law? I know I was when I had my baby). Eve comes over and Audrey makes good her escape. Fred asks about the phone call and Eve says it was about a wrong delivery, Fred says he'll have a word with the delivery manager but Eve tells him no.

Sally tells Kev Rita's suggestion of going back to a market stall. Kev says he doesn't mind as long as the kids don't suffer. Peter Barlow, Blanche and Old Mother Norris start asking Sally if the fire was an insurance job and what's she going to spend her ill-gotten insurance gains on. Kev's sticks up for Sal and says how upset she is over the fire and how Martin and David could have died (if only). Archie (who came in 1/2 way through the conversation) makes a joke about a friend and an insurance fire which makes Sal feel worse.

At school Sarah makes an excuse to Ken about not having done her homework because of the fire and the now crowded house. Ken gives her more time. The headmistress comes up to Ken and says Charlie's already gone and asks Ken to apply for a fulltime teaching job.

Sally's with the insurance rep, Old Mother Norris hangs around trying to earwig. Sally tries to convince the rep that it was an accident and how David and Martin could have been killed. Martin arrives and starts harassing the rep for insurance money for his flat and belongings. She's says it's nothing to do with her and asks Sally for her books and records which are back at Sally's house.

Max and Ash arrive at the hospital. Maxine is still pretending that everything is hunky dory and the nurse tries to get Ashley to hold the baby. He is horrified and pretends he has a cold so he doesn't have to. Maxine is gutted but takes the baby herself.

Part Two.

Tea Time at the Platts. Martin's off out and Gail asks David to set the table. David refuses and tells Gail to "Shhhhhhhhh". Gail, Richard and Martin all start telling him off at the same time and David starts moaning how Richard's in the way and Martin was sleeping in his bed and how he always gets shouted at yada yada. Gail points out that it's hard for all of them not just him but David storms off to feed his rabbit.

At the Barlow's Ken tells them all that Charlie's gone and he's thinking of going full-time. Archie launches in to a tale of how he's cremating one of his old school teachers and it's a shame as no-one will be there to mourn him. He asks Blanche to come and pretend to be a mourner and mentions the feed she'll get afterwards and a nice bunch of flowers. Much to Deirdre's disgust Blanche agrees.

In the pub Martin and Kev are joking about death which gives Old Mother Norris the chance to butt in and ask about the insurance women with Sally this afternoon. Kev warns him he hasn't got his mates around him and to watch what he says this time. OMN starts backpeddling and says it must be wonderful for Sally to have the 2 men in her life backing her up. Martin mentions he's not happy at Gailās and Kev offers him a bed at his house.

Chez Peacock, Maxine and Fred are banging on about names again while Ashley looks on with disgust but joins in when prompted. Max decides to pick a name off the family tree and opts for Joshua. Ash says maybe they should pick a name from her family not his which annoys her and hurts Fred but Maxine stands firm. Fred leaves to tell Eve. Ash tells Max he hopes she's happy using Fred like that and just because she's taken a name from the Elliot family it doesn't mean the baby is an Elliot.

Rita's round at Sally's again. Sal's cheered up a bit and thanks Rita for her advice. She tells Rita that she'll be paying her back the money she borrowed when the insurance comes and will start her life a new.

Chez Peacock. Max pulls her head out of the sand long enough to hear Ashley deny the baby and perhaps take the information in this time. Max says now Mat's gone there's nothing to stop Ash being the baby's dad and if he held him just the once he'd know he was the dad. Ash says he wants a paternity test doing, Max looks horrified.

Roll credits.

Friday 19 April

More gloom and doom chez Peacock, as Ashley remains unconvinced as to who the father of little Joshua is and Maxine continues to plead with him to trust her. Ashley will only trust an expert - no, not Dr Ramsden!

Ken is busy at his laptop preparing his CV (resume) for the full-time teaching post, but Deirdre is concerned that he's taking on too much. Blanche, however, tells her that 'we oldies know what we can manage' - oh dear, does she mean Ken? Blanche tries to persuade Deirdre to accompany her to the funeral, but she declines the kind invitation.

Sally and Kevin survey the fire damage at the shop. Eileen and Steve pass on their way to work and Steve jokes about Sally's being an arsonist to claim the insurance money. Kevin is not amused. We learn that the fire was caused by an electrical fault - namely, the plug on the radio which had been fitted with the wrong fuse, by Jason.

In the cafe, Roy is enthusing about his planned re-enactment of a Civil War battle on the Red Rec, but Hayley is more excited by their imminent third wedding anniversary on Sunday. Maxine confides to Audrey that the baby might not be Ashley's and Audrey advises her to lie to Ashley to save their marriage. Maxine mentions the slight problem of Ashley's wish to have a DNA test...

In the Rovers, Fred reminds Eve about their visit to the hospital, but she can't go for they have a delivery. (She's lying - her lips moved.) Fred will have to bond with the 'babby' for both of them.

In the Kabin, Archie is talking about the funeral of one of his old teachers, Bernie Jackson; Blanche has already offered to go along and the jovial Archie tries to persuade Betty to attend as well. She agrees. Norris does his usual twittering, and everyone ignores him.

Kevin catches up with Ashley as he's about to get into his car. Maxine is getting everything ready for the baby's homecoming apparently. Audrey rushes up and attempts to assure Ashley that Maxine loves him, the baby is his, no need for a paternity test and things will be fine, but Ashley tells her to mind her own business.

Fred peers into the incubator and talks to his little grandson. He's so proud (as a Peacock?). Maxine is putting a brave face on things - Ashley will be there later.

Sally comes into the cafe and accuses Jason of causing the fire, leaving her with nothing. Jason is sorry. Sally is sorry for employing him, and warns him not to ask her for a reference before storming out.

In the Rovers, Fred tells Shelley all about his little grandson. Eve arrives, having been out, although she had said that she had to stay in the pub all morning. Fred asks where she has been, and she offers the excuse of Freshcos. Fred does not look convinced...

Eileen finds Jason still sitting in the cafe with Kirk. She orders Kirk to disappear, which he does, and then orders Jason to get off his backside and find a job - 'The chairman of BP is not going to come round looking for you personally'. Ouch!

Eve is having a muted conversation on the phone in the Rovers, while Fred hovers in the background. Eve makes the excuse of the brewery 'playing silly beggars'. Mmmm.

In the Kabin, Kevin tries to reassure Sally that everything will be alright with her insurance claim, but Sally admits that the fire does look suspicious. A cuppa at the garage is called for - wow! Archie is very grateful to Blanche and Betty for coming along to the funeral and even asks Betty if she'd like to be one of his 'semi-pros', a select band of retired ladies who can be relied upon to turn up at quiet funerals as the occasion demands. Betty will consider this...

In the Rovers, Ken shows Deirdre his CV and she is very impressed. Is he not over-qualified for a teaching post at a comprehensive? Roy assures Shelley that there'll be no cannons at his re-enactment of the Civil War battle, then he shuffles off on a secret mission, for a surprise present for Hayley. Fred reminds Eve about their Sunday dinner with Ashley and Maxine, but Eve has a prior engagement - Ann Moodie, landlady of the Crown and Castle, is leaving, and Eve has to attend her leaving party.

The Peacock home, again. Maxine is still trying to convince Ashley of his being the father of her little boy, but he'll only be sure that he's the father once he sees evidence, like a DNA test.

In the Rovers, Eve eventually concedes to Fred that she'll be at Ashley's and Maxine's for dinner on Sunday, but she'll have to leave early.

Chez Barlow/Rachid. Ken and Deirdre arrive home to a buffet which Blanche has prepared. They prepare to tuck in, just as Blanche explains that these are the left-overs (nearly typed 'remains'!) from the funeral. 'If a sandwich was bitten into, I threw it out', she says.

In the Rovers, Fred makes a muted phone call to the Crown and Castle. There is no landlady by the name of Ann Moodie leaving, nor is there any leaving party organised for Sunday... Fred must be mistaken, and puts the phone down.

Peacock home, once again. In spite of Maxine's protestations, the three of them, Maxine, Ashley and the baby Joshua are booked to have a DNA test a week on Monday. For once, things will be done as HE says.

Sunday 21 April

Fred continues to question Eve about Anne Moody and the Crown and Castle "do" for her leaving and upon telephoning, finds out that there's no one by that name at the pub nor is there a leaving party scheduled.

Over at the Peacock's, Maxine is asking Ashley how to roast a chicken for the Sunday lunch for the in-laws. She doesn't want them over anymore than he does and wonders if they should cancel. Ashley replies that he'll only pretend to play Happy Families until he receives the results from the DNA tests which will prove paternity of the little babby in the incubator, then takes over in the kitchen.

The Elliott's arrive to lovely aromas. Max tells Ash to be sure to get the skin nice and crispy for his dad while Eve sniffs about the calories. Upon being questioned by the atmosphere in the house, Max claims that Ashley is annoyed with her for giving away his favourite shirt to charity.

Fred wants to know when young Peacock (Ramsden) will be named as they'll need to add it to the Family Tree. Maxine has a brilliant idea - they can pick one from there and chooses Jeremy. Now, I happen to think that Jeremy Peacock sounds rather nice, but Fred points out that the youngster will be attending Weatherfield Comp and it may not be the wisest of choices. Max settles on Joshua instead. Fred eulogizes that the name doesn't matter as long as he's honest and has integrity as Max mutters "Yeah" under her breath in the background.

The hosts are complimented on a lovely meal and a lovely name as Eve has to dash away to her mystery appointment. Fred waddles out moments later. Maxine thinks Fred has been a bit off with her and wonders if Ash has told him. He gives her that evil glare again he's perfected and denies it. Max sobs that the midwife is already suspicious and so will Fred be if Ash continues to avoid going to the hospital. He can't keep up his mean streak as she breaks down and agrees to visit baby Joshua but only until the DNA results come back.

There's chaos chez Platt when Martin returns from working nights. David and Todd are playing video games and Sarah can't get Bethany to eat her porridge. Gail tells Sarah to put some honey on it, and Richard suggests that they all go out for a spin to pick up a car seat for Beth and let homeless Martin get his head down for a few hours.

In the Rovers, Shelley asks Kev how Sally is doing; Molly is not too happy about the number of people assuming that he knows. Whilst she's in the Ladies, Martin asks Kev if he can take him up on his offer to kip down at theirs. Kev tells him it's not a problem and as Molly returns, Martin adds "... as long as it's OK with Molly". She laughs and teases "What's wrong, Kev ... one nurse not enough for you??". Martin asks if there's any news on Sally's insurance settlement as he can't make any plans, but Kev doesn't know. In turn he asks how Sally is doing, but Martin thinks that Kev is better placed to answer that than him. Molly's getting visibly more ticked off and confides in Martin that she's fed up with the topic of Sally cropping up all the time.

Martin lets the Platts and Richard know that though he's very appreciative of their hospitality, he's moved out. David complains that he will miss him, as will Sarah as she thought he could babysit for her.

Roy and Hayley are celebrating their third anniversary with leather! I'm sorry, my mind faltered for a moment as I tried *not* to imagine other possibilities for the two of them other than the handbag he gave her and the briefcase she gave him! Roy's a bit miffed as he's rather attached to his little shopping bag, but Hayley's determined to make him over in a more sophisticated image as he takes the reins of leadership at the Historical Society. Roy's got a second surprise for her, but she has to leave him for a few hours.

Hayley shows off her new bag to the girls in the Rovers and mentions there's a treat yet to come. Janice believes she's already ahead as nothing could be worse than the deep fat fryer that Les bought her for their last anniversary together. Shelley and Molly tease Hayley that he's probably booked Delphine's for dinner. So, Hayley is a bit surprised to find that Roy has cooked a meal for them, but not as surprised when she finds out it is an authentic recipe from the Civil War. Roy asks her to pour them each a goblet of (organic) cider as he serves up a type of mince and vegetable stew with unleavened bread and cheese. It looked disgusting! Roy explains that in order to preserve historical accuracy, the mutton would be tough, but that was intentional, as was the overdosing with salt to preserve it! Hayley takes a deep breath and asks "Is there no chance of a gin and tonic?" Unfortunately, gin hadn't been invented in the 1640's! The sweet which Roy claimed was similar to an Eccles cake (though it looked burnt to me) is overloaded with sugar. Hayley demands coffee. Roy suggests that while she sups, he read one of the shorter sermons (only an hour). Hayley points out that the return of Charles II to the throne brought back gaiety to a nation in despair after the 12 years of Puritan rule and insists they act out that part of history by going to the Rovers!

Fred spots Eve getting into a taxi and follows her. She ends up at Ray Sykes' house, who reveals that he and Fred have never met (it will no doubt become important). I have been inundated with people around the world asking me why there's been no resolution to the Missing Linda Baldwin storyline and I'm pleased to announce that it's finally arrived! Ray informs Eve that Linda has been in touch - she's now living in Dublin with a new bloke as Ireland is as far away as she could get without her passport. She'd abandoned Mike's car which must have been stolen by joyriders. Eve is upset that Linda never contacted her, but at least she's still alive. She asks how she could survive without money, but it turns out that Linda had put some by as she always knew it was never going to work out with Mike. However, she's now settled and ready to face the world ... except Eve is not to tell the police or Mike as she wants them to believe she's dead. And, she has to keep it from Fred, though Ray gives a sinister laugh and says "It'll not be the first time you've kept things from him" as he hands over Linda's new mobile number.

On the doorstep, Eve says thanks to Ray with a big hug, witnessed by poor Fred

Monday 22 April

Here's the report on the episode screened on Monday 22nd April. Overseas subscribers may like to know that the Soap Section of this yearās BAFTA's (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) was won by EastEnders!

The scene opens with Ken striding down The Street, he sees Candice and Sarah and they greet each other. Janice and Hayley are also strolling along on their way to the factory. We move to the back room at the Rovers Return, where Eve has just served Fred with a full English cooked breakfast. Ass Betty enters Fred is saying he doesn't feel like a cooked breakfast. He asks Eve if she enjoyed herself at the "do" - what "do" Betty wants to know. Fred asks Betty is she's heard of Ann Moody at the Crown & Castle - she hasn't. Moodily he stomps off. Round at the Peacocks Max and Ash are getting ready to visit Joshua in hospital. Ash is having 2nd thoughts. Max suggests he might just as well say to Fred that the baby might not be his and have done with it. Ash stoically says he will accompany her to the hospital because he had said he would and no, he wont be telling Fred about the grey area of paternity.

Round at the Kabin with Rita presiding, Sally and Kevin are discussing the insurers. Sally is in a ferment awaiting news. Martin joins them and indicates to Kev that he's had a door key cut. He is grateful to Kevin and Molly for giving his a bed and wants to pay his way. No says Kev just chip in with the food bills. Kevin is studying a holiday brochure and confides that he's thinking of taking Molly away for a surprise birthday present, possibly to Majorca - he'll have to see what's cheap down at the travel agents.

Ken is presiding over his class and they are discussing literature and what the author means by retaliation. Sarah and Candice make a late entry which surprises Ken, having previously seen them when he was coming in to school. Sarah explains that she's late because she's just dropped Bethany off at the new crche and it miles. Ken wants to know why Candice is late. Well says Candice I couldn't leave Sarah to struggle on and off the bus with the pushchair now could I? Ken says that oh well he supposes it wont matter for once if they are late. Argumentative Aiden wants to know why the girls get let off and aren't set a detention. Ken points out that part of being civil is being reasonable. Aiden wants to know if he shoves up against the wall and threatens him whether Ken will be "reasonable" about that. Ken tells his to sit down and be careful - Aiden mutters that he only wants to get to the truth. Sarah tells him to sit down.

Saved by the bell. The lesson ends.

At Roys Rolls Curly has just ordered a bacon sarnie which he has been looking forward to all day. He's got his baby son with him. Roy suggests that the baby might like some of the sandwich and Curly responds with "no chance". The conversation moves on to the topic of the re-enactment. Roys says he's got a date and a venue - the Red Rec which prior to 1643 was known as Ye Common Rec and the reason that's it's called red is because of the blood spilt in previous skirmishes. Roy says he wants it to be historically correct but it all costs money. Curly suggest that the Council might provide a grant. Roy asks Curly to undertake this on his behalf and Curly concurs.

Back at the Peacocks the hospital visit is over and on their return Max finds that the self-assembly cot has been delivered. She asks Ash to help her erect it but he says he's off to work. She accuses him of thinking more of that shop than your own. We switch to Fred working in the shop. Lucky man he's serving Blanche! She wants 3 chump chops and a couple of links of sausages and as usual is disdainful (why can't that women ever just do something without making a drama out of it?). She decides to have some lamb's kidneys as well. She's gossiping on about how much she enjoyed being a professional mourner. Archie says that he needs her this afternoon and that they are to spend the time together. She reports that Betty said she finds it liberating attending a funeral especially if the deceased is younger than her! Fred attention has been wandering during this discourse and he spies a mean looking stranger peering in (it's the chap he saw Eve with the previous night). He abruptly marches past Blanche in mid flow and steps outside the shop, looking up and down the street but the man has disappeared. Blanche is huffy at the way she's been treated - Fred's retort is "shop elsewhere if you don't like it". Ash arrives at the shop and Fred is glad to see him. He asks Ash how the baby is - "Joshua's crying a lot". Well Fred has no doubt they'll all be happier once the baby has come home and says he'll look after the shop if Ash wants to spend time with the baby once he's home. Fred removes his apron and leaves.

Lunch time over at the Rovers. Janice is supping her pint and Mike is besides her ordering his usual. Eve persuades him to buy Janice a pint - Eve seems very perky. Fred stomps in and says he wants a quiet word with Mike. He asks is the mystery man has been in - no. Eve asks Fred if he wants his dinner - no, he's going to see Max for a baby report. Now something must be up for Fred to turn down food on two occasions in one day! On entering the Peacocks living room he discovers Max fighting with the cot. Give it 'ere say he, I'll see if I can fettle it and then one day in the future with Joshua strumming the rails I'll be reminded that it was his Grandad what put his cot together. Fred suggests Max makes some tea, she starts to cry and he hugs her saying that the baby doesn't know his luck with a beautiful mother and a doting father.

Blanche and Archie are in the Kabin trying to decide what to do together that afternoon - a run out to the lakes is mentioned. His mobile rings. Looking decidedly pleased Archie announces that their afternoon together will have to wait for another time as there's a widow to deal with "Reapers been swinging his scythe" Au revoir and kissing Blanche's hand he leaves. Rita remarks what a chirpy chap he is when he deals in death all day.

Back in the classroom Ken and Aiden size each other up and Ken remarks that he knows where Aiden's coming from.

Fred returns to the Rovers and Eve wants to know if he's eaten. He tells her Max made him a sandwich. Eve wants to know what's getting him down. At Roys Rolls, Roy is mopping happily as Hayley returns from her day's work, he mentions the possibility of a Council grant and tells her Curly is dealing with it. Back in the Rovers Curly and Ash are side by side and someone comments about doting fathers. Curly says he's had the little terror all day and is looking forward to a quiet pint. He asks Ash when Joshua will be home and Ash says that they havenāt said yet. Eve wants to know if anyone's seen Fred.

We see Fred march up to a front door a strike the knocker. The mean featured man answers the door and when he sees who it is suggests Fred should come in. Fred says "You know why I'm here". Come in exhorts the man. "What's going on between you and my wife?" Fred wants to know. He finally enters the house.

At the Barlows, Deirdre wants to know why Blanche didn't spend the afternoon with Archie as planned. All to do with money opines Deirdre. He's a real gent says Blanche. A tired looking Ken arrives home at the end of his day. Archie pops in and promises Blanche he'll take her out for a expensive meal the next day. Good thing I went he says they were about the give the job to another undertakes and that would never do.

Fred and the mystery man are in the living room. Fred is offered a drink but declines on the grounds that his is not a social visit. The man reveals that he is Ray Sykes, Eve's ex. Fred wants to know why Eve and he have been seeing each other, are they having an affair.

Ask her says Ray. No says Fred tell me. If anyone's having an affair mate it's you says Ray, we're not divorced.

Another episode will be screened tonight, Tuesday.

Unfortunately technical problems prevented us getting this report to you earlier. But at last, we bring you .... Tuesday!!!

Directed By: Ian Bevitt

We open in the Rovers with Fred asking Eve in an off hand way, what her plans are for the day. She replies that she's there all day. No thought except what takes her fancy. Fred replied that he expects it will.

Sally is in the corner shop, and tells the girls they can only have a biscuit. She cannot pay the total, and Deirdre tells her to pay it next time. Deirdre tells Sally that it won't be so bad with the insurance money coming, but Sally says she has bills to pay, and money she's borrowed to pay back. When Deirdre asks does she mind telling her how much, Sally says she doesn't know, she's scared to add it all up.

In the butcher shop Ashley asks Fred what wrong with him. Fred replies that he has no time for chit-chat. Ashley say that he's either poorly or there's something bothering him, Fred tells him that it's Eve. She's seeing a chap, her ex-husband, it's Linda's father, and not her ex at all. They are still married, as they never got divorced. Ashley ask what Eve says about it all, the husband could be lying. Fred says what was she doing sneaking off behind his back, and Ash doesn't know how lucky he is, having a wife he can trust.

Curly tells Roy he's going to the council about the historical event. Roy wants to go there to give him some support, draw a few battle plans, and add his weight - but Hayley says it will mean shutting the cafe for the afternoon, and Curly tells him that it's in the bag. Until Curly goes into the room, and is greeted by Councilor Naysmith. Curly asks if there is a queue, and he tells him no, Curly is in the front. Curly asks who is in the Sub-Committee chair, and Naysmith says it's him. He tells Curly he can forget all about the historical event, after being locked up in the councilors car park, and he wouldn't give any funding anyway, that Curly is on cloud cuckoo-land, that the Historical Committee haven't applied for permission to the parks manager, not applied for a license, and to the Health & safety for a public liability Insurance cover. Curly says that they didn't know the rules, but that Naysmith could help him.. Naysmith replies that they send a lad on a mans errand.

Blanche is going out with Archie, but can't find anything to wear for the evening. She borrows 40UKp for an outfit and a hairdo for the special occasion. Archie doesn't appear at 6pm, and Blanche rings him on his mobile, but she informs Deirdre that it's switched off, and why would that be? Deirdre replies that people switch mobiles off, when they are trying to avoid someone or otherwise engaged.

Ken is talking to one of the teachers in corridor, he tell her that he agonized over Charlie Ramsden, but couldn't turn blind eye. She tells him that she agrees with him, but didnāt at the time, and that there are still a minority in the staff room who are against him. In the class room Aidan wants to read his homework, which is poem about Ken and his works as a trolley pusher. Ken tells him that it is good, but next time he wants him to write one about pushing his luck, and not trolley's. (What is going on with this storyline?)

DC Yates and Wright come to Sally's door. She's on the defensive straight away, and thinks the insurance company are trying not to pay up, but the police inform her that there are reasons for being suspicious. Sally, who doesn't know when to stop, asks if they think it was deliberate, but they tell her they need her at the police station at 9am the following day.

Mike sees Fred in the Rovers, and assumes him and Eve have had a fight. He tells him to sort it out. When he goes later back to the pub, he sees Fred sitting and eggs him on and asks him if he's chickened out. Fred tells him he is waiting for the right moment then literally drags Eve from behind the bar into the back room, saying he doesn't want to be disturbed. He tells Eve that him and her have to have a serious talk. What she been doing, because he followed her. Eve tells him he's nasty and suspicious, and that Linda is alive, and living in Dublin. He tells her that she'll say anything, a and she's says that it's true, Linda had rang her father, but Linda didn't want Baldwin finding out, and she knows how jealous Fred can be. He asks her if that's it? and Eve replies that that is everything, god's honest truth!

And then it starts , accusations flying, Fred accusing Eve of being a bigamist. She tells him it wasn't deliberate, she started divorce proceedings, but they never got finished. She should have told him, but she thought he might not wait, and might change his mind, if it had to be taken to court. He tells he gave her everything, and she's a taker, and Eve retaliates that he pesters all the time, always grinding on, always the big man, and she doesn't know how she has put up with it. It's the finish, she's had as much as she can take of him. Fred, suddenly realising how far things have gone, asks if this is the end? And Eve, storms out screaming that flaming right , it's finished, goodbye and good riddance! Phew!!!!

Friday 26 April

In the Kabin, Sally confides her worry about her imminent visit to the police station, concerning the fire at her shop, to Rita, who is very encouraging and supportive. Norris is neither, and advises the hapless Sally to get a good solicitor. (A 'good' solicitor, eh?) Sally leaves. Mike has overheard the conversation and reminds Rita that Sally once stole his database from his office. Rita reminds Mike that it was Greg Kelly who put her up to that scam, but Mike remains suspicious.

Maxine knocks on the back door of the Rovers, and a bleary-eyed Fred appears. She wonders if the happy foursome (Fred, Eve, Ashley and she) could visit the hospital together to see the baby. Fred makes some lame excuse, but hides the truth from Maxine.

In the cafe, Roy is still excited (how can they tell?) about his planned re-enactment of a Civil War skirmish. He is convinced that Councilor Watts will manage to procure some funding for the project. Norris arrives, and can't wait to tell Vera all about Sally's interview with the police. Hayley refuses to believe that Sally would burn down her own shop. Jason talks to the neanderthal Kirk, who advises that Jason keep stumm about his having changed the fuse on the radio in the shop. Jason still feels guilty about his part in the fire.

Chez Barlow/Rachid. Blanche is still hurting about being stood-up by Archie, whom she refers to as "all brylcreem and shoe polish". Just as Ken leaves for school, the said Archie arrives, literally 'cap in hand', and profers his apologies, which Blanche rejects. She tells him to go. Exit a doleful Archie.

The back room of the Rovers, and Fred informs the staff (in confidence, of course) about Eve's sudden departure. After Fred leaves, Betty, Geena and Shelley speculate about the why and wherefore of Eve's exodus, but then quickly get down to the nitty-gritty of who's going to be acting landlady. Geena and Shelley think it's a two-horse race, but Betty thinks otherwise...

In the police station, Sally protests her innocence about the fire - it was an accident. However, the facts, as the police see them, are - she was desperate, profits were almost non-existent, shop rent had been doubled, radio had been left on. Sally mentions the fuse which Jason had changed...

Curly seems reluctant to enter the cafe, with Emma and the baby. He plucks up the courage to tell Roy that, not only has he failed to secure funding for the re-enactment, but that the project will have to be cancelled. Roy puts this down to red tape but thanks Curly for trying. Curly admits to Roy that Councilor Naismith may hold a grudge against him for having been the leader of the protest group about the creche.

In the Rovers, Geena asks Deirdre's advice about which wedding invitations she should choose. Deirdre, looking suitably shifty, suggests that she ask Dev's advice on this matter! Blanche is having a quiet drink, and Betty asks where Archie is. When Blanche tells her that she's dumped him, Betty counters with the remark that, at her age, she should be grateful for what she can get. (If looks could kill!) Shelley, Geena and Betty argue about Saturday working, just as Fred passes with Ashley, who now knows that Eve has departed. Maxine must not be told - it might upset her...

A policewoman talks to Rita about the shop fire and Rita supports Sally. Norris rushes up, to offer his tuppence-worth, but Rita shoos him back to work as a sort of damage-limitation exercise. Jason and Kirk appear, and the policewoman talks to Jason about his seeming botched repair of the radio. Did he try to repair the radio?

Maxine and Ashley arrive in the hospital, only to find that the incubator is empty. Panic. However, all is well: a nurse brings the baby in and little Joshua is now well enough to survive out with the incubator and, indeed, is ready to be breast-fed. Ashley, albeit a tad reluctantly, holds the baby while Maxine gets ready to feed the infant.

Back room at the Rovers, and Mike arrives to find Fred trying to soothe his woes with whisky. Fred bares his soul to his mate, Mike, and even tells Mike about Linda's being alive, which information seems to upset Mike...

Jason calls in to see Sally, and tells her that he's sorry for his part in the demise of her business. She tells him that it wasn't his fault and that things will be alright. (Oh yeh?)

Back with the two sorrowing Sykes' suitors. At least, Fred had Sybil and Mike had Alma to make them happy. They agree to drink to "new beginnings".

Sally and Rita arrive in the Rovers for a quiet drink, but Norris and Blanche make it clear to Sally that, as far as they're concerned, Sally will do quite nicely out of the insurance money. Sally exits.

Chez Peacock. Curly and Emma listen to the account of Ashley's and Maxine's visit to the hospital. After the visitors leave, Ashley makes it clear, once again, to Maxine, that he doesn't want to have any feelings for the baby until he knows who the father is. However, he does concede that he did feel some emotion when he held the little one...

Again, at the Barlow/Rachid nest. Ken is concerned that his application for a full-time teacher post may be jeopardized by his age. (The phrase "off his trolley" springs to mind!) Singing is heard in the background, and Blanche, Deirdre, Ken, Peter and Shelley go outside to investigate... Archie is there, replete with his best mourning togs and a tile hat, singing a variation of 'You are my Sunshine'. Archie offers flowers, and apologies, to Blanche, while a crowd gathers, and Blanche's cold heart warms to her suitor, even inviting him in for a cuppa. All is forgiven! Outside the Rovers, Rita remarks to Fred that 'romance is not dead'. Fred looks as though he disagrees...

Sunday 28 April

It is Lillith's hands firmly on the keyboard once again !

The Barlow House
It's early morning and Blanche has a visitor in Archie. He's been up since 6 am working. Blanche is having her breakfast and offers him a cup of tea, Archie makes himself comfy at the table, undoing his tie.

He manages to put Blanche off her food by telling her about his friend Bert's job at the morgue and then he recounts a tale of a dead body and a chest wig. While they're laughing over the tale Deirdre and Ken come down the stairs. She drags Ken off into the kitchen and is most unhappy (no shocks there then) as she thinks Archie has stayed the night. Ken's not bothered if he has or not as they're both over the age of consent. Deirdre's disgusted because Blanche is her mother and Archie is a .....well he's an UNDERTAKER!

Rovers Return - out the back.
Fred's sitting on the stairs getting the 3rd degree from Ashley over how much sleep Fred is or isn't getting. It turns out Fred is sleeping very little, he can't get used to sleeping on his own but he refuses to contact Eve. He asks about the baby and we find out Max has stayed the night at the hospital. Fred goes up for a lie down as he doesn't want to face "Hinge and Brackett" in the back room - Shelley and Betty, (his words not mine :)

Rovers Return - The Back Room
Hinge and Brackett are discussing the still missing Eve. Shelley thinks it's creepy and something has happened to Eve but Betty disagrees. Shelley thinks Eve's been done away with after all Fred is a butcher and remember Sweeny Todd? Obviously she doesn't as Betty has to point out that he was a barber.

Sally's House
Sally's at the table doing some paperwork. Rosie's obviously has finished washing her hands and has come down stairs. Sal asks her if she wants breakfast as they have some bread (!) but Rosie declines. She gives her mum a big hug and tells her not to worry as she and Sophie have been discussing things and have agreed to forgo their pocket money for a few weeks to help out. Sal confesses she's worried about the police but she's done the figures and they're going to be fine. Rosie tells her that the police only put bad people in jail and gives her another hug.

Kev and Molly's
Kev and Molly are in bed. Kev thinks he's to blame for Sally's problems after all he had an affair and split them up. He's got a partner, a job and money in the bank and Sally has nothing but debts.

Molly tells him not to be so stupid, he and Sal split up years ago and didn't Sal get £50k from her mother? Kev agrees and changes the subject to Molly's birthday. She has a few guesses at her present - firstly a car then a ring, she has no idea about the holiday to Majorca.

The Corner Shop.
Shelley is telling Deirdre and Gail how she's warned Betty not to look in the chest freezer at the pub in case Eve's body is in it. Gail and Deirdre find it funny - no that's not a typo, Deirdre found it funny too. Deirdre then mentions about Fred's grandfather or great grandfather, Bernard Cartwright, who was hung for murdering his wife.

Shelley's aghast, she knew nothing about it, still, it fans the flames of this pathetic storyline.

The Corner Shop - out the back
Dev's going away for 2 nights to some convention (a grocers one not Star Trek) and Geena wants to go with him, Dev's not keen but Geena thinks they need a break and it wouldn't be all work there, they could have some fun. Dev says no, she'd find it boring. They have a row about it and Dev admits that if he was to take anyone it would be Deirdre. Geena storms off through the shop shouting "you take Deirdre, see if I care". Deirdre looks at Dev.

The Hospital
Max has Joshua in her arms and Ashley enters the ward, he's brought her some clothes. He asks politely how the baby is and smiling Max says they can take him home tomorrow. Ash reminds her they also have the paternity test tomorrow, Max smile drops. After a brief silence Ash tells her about seeing Fred and that there was no news on Eve (I thought this was being kept from Max at Fred's request), also that Fred told him how lucky Ash was to have Max and the baby. Max, all smiles again, reminds him the baby's name is Joshua. Ash replies that he doesn't feel lucky which instantly wipes the smug grin from Max's chops. Ash goes to leave but Max needs to break Ashley's defenses towards the baby down a bit - she asks him to hold Joshua while she goes to get changed. He suggests the nurses but she says please. He agrees. Crafty cow.

Rovers Return - Bar
Kev's on the phone to Martin, Molly's been snooping around trying to find her pressie. Kev laughs as he's just taken the money out of the bank to pay for it. Audrey enters the pub. She's just heard about Eve leaving and asks Betty for more info but Betty refuses to be drawn into it. Audrey says she knew it wouldn't last and Betty reminds her that Audrey was the one who shouted that the loudest and walks off. Audrey with her hide like a rhino thinks this is funny.

Deirdre and Dev are chatting about the conference - Dev tells her it's in "Sunny Croydon". Deirdre tells Dev that Ken won't mind her going and Dev tells her that she's not invited despite what she heard Geena shouting. Deirdre's miffed, it sounds like the kind of thing she should be going to. Dev reminds her that after what happened at Xmas it wouldn't be appropriate for them to go together. Angrily Deirdre asks him how much longer "Xmas" is going to be held over her. He offers to buy her a drink but Deirdre won't have it and walks off saying she'll see him tomorrow.

The Hospital
Joshua is in his tank while Ashley sits 6 feet away looking at him. He gets up and goes over to the tank and strikes up a conversation with the sleeping baby. He tells the baby he's not sure who he is and if he's his dad. Maxine quietly enters the ward (how trite this whole scene is) and listens by the door. Ash carries on talking saying how he wishes it was 2 weeks earlier and Joshua hadn't been born yet - before he knew what he knew. Still Joshua has a mummy who loves him very much and always will and no matter what happens he'll always have her, no matter what happens. Max weeps silently, the nation vomits.

Ads - cup of tea to rinse the horrid taste from your mouth.

Mike's Flat
Eve's just popped round to see Mike. He tells her to hurry as he's playing golf in half an hour. She nonchalantly asks if he knows about her and Fred, Mike replies yes...Mrs Sykes. Eve's a bit stunned but counters with info about Linda. She wants a quick divorce from Mike.

Mike asks if Linda's found another rich bloke to con but Eve reckons that it's not all Linda's fault, living with Mike couldn't have been all a bed of roses. Mike asks if Linda knew everyone thought he'd killed her and Eve says no. Mike starts on how Eve accused him of murdering Linda in a pub full of people, she says she believed he had. He then makes Eve feel bad and tells her how little Linda must have thought of her mother by not telling her she was leaving to shack up with someone else. How Linda left her to think she was dead for all these months. He takes Eve's arm and tells her he's taking her to the police station, Eve's horrified but Mike sneers that she needn't worry he won't mention her bigamy to them. He wants his name cleared and Fred's his mate and he's suffered enough. She and Linda are 2 of a kind.

The Corner Shop
Sal needs a few bits but hasn't enough cash, she asks Dev to let her have some credit seeing as Deirdre did a few days previously. Dev's not impressed (nice one Sally) and tells her that he never gives credit under any circumstances. Kev wanders over and Dev offers to serve him but Kev says to serve Sally first.. Dev replies Sal's not buying anything which makes her run out of the shop upset. Dev shouts after her that he's running a business not a charity, Kev gives him the evil eye but Dev asks if Kev allows people to just come and take their cars away without paying for his services. Kev doesn't see it that way and walks out of the shop after Sally. He catches up with her at the door to her house and tells her he had no idea things were that bad that she had no money for food. Crying she runs into the house and slams the door on him. *Does Sally not get child benefit and upkeep for the kids from Kev? I'd be pretty miffed if I were Kev*

Chez Peacock
Max and Audrey are having a chat about the paternity test. Max asks Audrey if she was a bloke and the test proved she wasn't the dad she'd leave wouldn't she? Audrey's surprised, after all Max has been adamant all along that Ash is the father, is she now saying he might not be? Max admits she doesn't know who is the dad. Audrey says she will always be there for Max but it's time she got something off her chest which Max will not like. It's about time Max took responsibility for her actions. If she hadn't have had sex with Dr Matt then none of the tests would be necessary would they? She should keep remembering that. If the tests did show Ash wasn't the father then she would have to do everything within her power to persuade Ash to stay and that she was really sorry. If the baby was Ashley's then she would have to work very very hard to show Ash that she would never ever do anything like that ever again to him. Max says there's no chance it ever happening again but Audrey laughs and says it could very easily. *I get the impression here that Audrey's been round the circuit more times than Blackpool go- karts*. Audrey tells Max to remember the next time she finds herself tempted by someone else, how she feels right now knowing that Ashley could leave her. That should keep her legs together.

Ken's house.
Ken, Deirdre, Blanche and Archie are playing cards - Blanche keeps losing and wonders why she bothers playing. Archie quips that unlucky in cards is lucky in love. Deirdre takes this opportunity to quiz Archie if he's lucky in love. Blanche takes umbrage (and another 5 cards) at this and points out that although Archie's been married twice that's still one less than Deirdre has (Nice one Blanche). Both of Archie's wives died, one after 26 marriage and the second after 8 years. Ken wins the game and Deirdre gets up to do the washing up. Blanche follows her into the kitchen and asks her what she's playing at grilling Archie like she did. Deirdre admits she's taking an interest in Archie because Blanche has got so close to him and she doesn't want to see her mother get hurt. Blanche says there's no need, she's very happy. Deirdre mentions that after Archie staying the night she realises that as long as Blanche is happy then so is she. This is news to Blanche of course as we and she knows Archie didn't stay the night. Deirdre explains she felt awkward seeing him but she realises that Blanche is a woman first and her mother second and she's entitled to a life so she's happy for her. Blanche is touched.

The house with no food.
Kev comes round to see Sally. Sally tells him that what happened earlier is not Kev's problem and it stopped being his problem years ago. Kev points out that if it affects his kids then of course it's his problem. Sally says they'll not starve. Kev asks her how she let things get this bad, why she didn't let him look at the books sooner.

A weeping Sal takes offence at him patronising her, ok she's in a mess and she has been before but she's not his responsibility and doesn't want his pity. It was bad enough having to beg Dev for tins of beans without Kev ....he moves in to comfort her but she moves away. Kev goes to make some tea but Sal says she hasn't any milk.

Chez Peacocks
Ash walks in and Max is all nicey nicey to him. Ash is disappointed, he'd hoped she was still at the hospital but Max says she had some washing to do. Ash turns to leave her to it but Max asks him to stop avoiding her. Knowing her game Ash says she'll not talk him out of the test. Max says she loves him, despite the test, despite everything that's happened she loves him always has and always will. Ash walks away.

Rovers Return - Bar
Mike's telling Fred about taking Eve down to police to clear his name over Linda. Shelley's earwigging. Fred asks how she was - hard as nails as usual was the reply - and did she ask after him - no is the quick answer. Mike says they're better off without the pair of them. Mike obviously views the police with the same rosy tinted specs that Sally's starving child does as he was surprised that despite clearing his name over murder the police didn't apologies to him for suspecting him in the first place. Fred asks where Eve is now, Mike says probably back under the rock she came out from. Shelley tells Betty all she's overheard from Mike and Fred but thinks that maybe Mike is only saying all that to give Fred an alibi as he's "in on it". *Please! This storyline is PATHETIC* Betty points out that Shelley has a lurid imagination and obviously reads a lot also that Shelley would have enjoyed reading the Penny Dreadfuls that were around when Betty was a girl. Molly and Gail are having a drink together. Molly's talking about her birthday present from Kevin. She's found a holiday brochure and has guessed her present. She's surprised as she's never sure what Kev's feelings are towards her but is trying to maintain the status quo by not pushing him, this affirms to her that Kev does have feelings for her.

The house with no food or milk
Sal's apologising to Kev and asks if they can still be friends. Kev says yes and gives her the £400 he took out for Molly's present. She says she'll pay him back in a few weeks. Kev gets up to leave and Sal follows him out. She apologises again for being a cow. Kev says she was under stress and he's glad he could help. She thanks him again and Kev hugs her then walks off down the street smiling to himself.

The end.

Monday 29 April

Greetings from rain and wind ravaged London town - max high 15oC /59F!

What a difference a week makes, last week it was 21oC+/70F.. Due to a football match we had two half-hour sessions of Corrie last night as no episode tonight and I guess none on Wednesday either.

Report

Kevin gives Molly a bunch of flowers, a card, a voucher for a facial and manicure and a big grin, wishing her "Happy Birthday". Molly is bemused but says nothing. A little later Martin appears clutching a small rectangular gift wrapped package. When he learns that Kev will not be giving Molly a holiday in Majorca he says "well that's blown it, I'd got her a guide book to Majorca!

Ash is on the phone in the Peacock household. He comes off the phone and tells Max that Josh has had a good night, slept right through. Don't forget the DNA testing appointment is at 3pm - we're to pick the baby up at 2pm. Max is not a happy bunny,

At Weatherfield Comp, Ken is taking the roll for his class. Wants to know where Aiden is. Steve and Darren come crashing in, late. Eventually Aiden arrives. Sarah says she and Candice will have to leave early to catch two buses to pick up Bethany. Ken does not acknowledge this request.

In the Rovers they've just opened up. Dev and Geena are chatting, he's muttering about fab countryside, she tells him to "book it". Apparently it's a weekend in Scotland. Ash delivers the meat to the pub. Fred admits his got the collie wobbles but is looking on the bright side.

Sally is in the corner shop settling her debt. Over at Gale's Sally admits that Kev's lent her £400 and is fretting about "wot if the insurance money doesn't come".

Outside the Peacocks Fred has just delivered a bunch of blue helium filled balloons to welcome the baby home. Ash reminds Max that the DNA test results will take 10 days to arrive. Tells her to get in the car, she says that a whole new life is counting on a piece of paper and wants to know what Ash is going to do with all that love if it transpires that Joshua isn't biologically his.

Back in the Corner Shop Dev's trying to clear the air with Deirdre and says that they used to be a good team. "What happened at Christmas - It's ruining everything" is overheard by Geena followed by "It was a mistake what happened at Christmas". Deirdre gets her coat and leaves. Geena flicks the sign to "closed". "Tell me" she demands of Dev. "It was nothing" he replies. "You're acting like there's something perhaps I'd better ask her" says Geena "She might talk some sense". "She had a crush on me" says Dev, "She had a lot to drink and tried to kiss me - I declined, made her a coffee and I sent her back to Ken" responds Dev.

At the hospital Max is cradling Joshua and starts to cry. The nurse says surely after all they've been through with baby Peacock, today's a good day. Time to go home says Ash with Maxine sniffing well.

In Ken's classroom he tells Sarah she may leave 10 minutes early but only her. He announces "page 67" to the class. The Head Teacher is lurking and wants a word, she suggests that Ken might like to become a Senior Pupil Mentor and tells him to think it over. He suggests that what they need is a counsilor.

Meanwhile the Peacock 3 have arrived outside the clinic in time for the DNA test appointment. Max is faffing about, says that Joshua's flat out and when he wakes he'll want a feed. She is in a highly nervous state. Calmly Ash suggests that they take him home. "You still haven't forgiven me" sniffs Max. Ashley responds "Let's do the best we can, like you said Max, if you love someone you can't turn it off like a tap - I love you Max"

At the Barlows, Ken arrives home from school and is surprised to find Deirdre already home - a blinding headache she pleads, Dev sent me home. Ken witters on about the permanent position he's been offered at the school. Wants to know if Deirdre needs anything for her headache, say she can got to the shop for something, she says she's taken paracetomol. She fancies a takeaway and a bottle of wine (some headache!)

Ashley proudly pick up Joshua and tells him "this is your new home here, we've been waiting for you."

Across at the Rovers Geena is bleating to Dev that he should sack Deirdre, his fanclub. At the bar Fred is telling Audrey that everything went ok. Eve walks in and says that there are things they need to talk about and that she's come for a few of her things.

Sally tells Gail that she's had a phone call from the Police and they're not proceeding due to insufficient evidence. Later Molly tells Gail that she'd got it all mapped out and was sure Kev was giving her a holiday from her birthday, now I just look like a money grabbing idiot she moans.

Fred rushes out of the pub and across the road to stand outside Ash and Max's home. Audrey dashes after him and stops him by the balloons which she comments on and says what a nice touch of Fred's. She suggests that the young couple she be left alone for the first day with their new baby. Fred says he can't fathom women but he knows Audrey didn't want him nor did she want any other bugger to have him!

Ash has changed his first dirty nappy and tells Max she's stuck with him.

End of episode one

Next morning a sleepy Max is bottle feeding Joshua when downstairs when a fully clothed Ash appears. She tells Ash that she'd feed the baby 3 times during the night. He wants to know whether Josh will want pudding! "My own son" he proudly announces.

Geena is still having a go at Dev and says she doesn't believe the tale he's spun her. Spitefully suggests that Deirdre's so besotted she'd do anything.

Hayley is perplexed at how down hearted Roy has become since he's request to hold the re-enactment at the Red Rec. has been turned down.

He won't hold it in the Precinct Car Park even if that would be allowed. Hayley suggests that they should go to the council and make a more direct approach.

Molly and Kev are discussing their living arrangements, she admits she likes Martin but that it's a bit of a squash. She also lets drop that she though she was being taken on holiday. Kev says that was in his mind but that he decided to wait since things at the garage weren't going too well. She says she's happy to wait until her next birthday.

Audrey is cooing over Joshua's cot and she and Max are tiptoeing about since he's asleep. Max tells Audrey that they are not going to do the DNA test and Audrey hugs her and asks how she's feeling. At which point Fred crashes in making enough noise to wake the dead.

Needless to say baby awakes and starts crying. He remarks that it's a happy day with a ray of sunshine. When asked about Eve he just says that she'll be coming back.

Deirdre and Dev are having a mild argument. Geena arrives and he suggests they step outside, he says he's sorry she had to hear that and promised at the slightest excuse he'll get rid of Deirdre.

Hayley knocks on Curly's door and he's delighted to see her, says it makes a change from having conversation with Ben, who's incapable of replying. Hayley wants to know the name of the councilor who refused Roy permission to hold the re-enactment at the Red Rec. Naesmith says Curly but he won't listen.

Jack is in the back room at the Rovers, he wants change and Fred tells him help himself. Fred is looking careworn. Behind the bar Jack asks Blanche if she'll put a bet on for him over at the bookies. She looks at what he's written on the piece of paper and shakes her head, saying that that nag's got no chance.

Audrey, Emily and Blanche are sitting alongside one another in the Rovers discussing the safe return of Joshua from hospital. Molly confides in Gail that Kevin would have paid for a holiday but as things are slow at the garage they'll have to wait. Well says Gail I know Kevin's lent a large sum of money to Sally.

Gail comes to warn Sally about Molly knowing that Kevin's lent her money and that that's the reason Kevin's not bought Molly a holiday for her birthday.

Hayley nervously seeks out the Council Chamber at The Town Hall. Naesmith is in full flood saying that cyclists are privileged as they have rights over everyone else. The debate ends and Hayley scuttles down the stairs in hot pursuit of Cllr. Naesmith. It's about the Historical Society Re-enactment she stammers, I know you turned Roy down because of him not abiding by the rules and regulations, which he didn't know about, but please he'd a good, decent man, and I love him so much and am so lucky that won't you change your mind? Later back at Roys Rolls, Hayley asks Roy why it's got to be June 3, couldn't he hold the skirmish later, that way he's have more time to make a proper application.

Ash visits Fred who tells him his got a temp. license and then rambles on about being a vain man who thought somebody loved him.

Molly can't keep quiet and tells Kev that she knows he lent Sally money and that's why they're not going on holiday and why didn't he tell her, after all it's not as if Sally is his wife anymore, "you should have told me the truth" moans Molly (this from the penniless suicidal council flat dwelling nurse, of a few months ago).

Round at the Peacocks, Emily cradles Joshua, having called round with some baby clothes, for which the proud parents are truly grateful. After she's gone Ash wonders aloud to Max whether he should move back into their bedroom, this remark is greeted with a large grin from Max who says "It's the happiest day of my life". Ash concedes that it must have been awful for her. She counters with "You do love Josh now, don't you?". "Course and his Mum" replies Ash.

Things are not so lovey dovey with Geena and Dev. She's like a dog with a bone and just can't believe what she's been told. She confronts him and says she's been talking to Deirdre. Dev says that both he and Deirdre had had a drink or two that Christmas Day and things happened "You slept with her" accuses Geena and she wrests his engagement ring from her finger and throws it across the room.

Ashley comes downstairs to find Maxine feeding Joshua and for the first time in weeks he says something nice to her, and makes her a cup of tea.

Deirdre and Dev are discussing Geena. Dev tells her that he's told her that Deirdre was drunk, they kissed, and he made her a cup of coffee and sent her home. Deirdre asks can it not be Dev that was drunk and foolish, and asks him if Geena believes all this, or is that he such a good liar, or that Geena is so much in love she with him she believes it? Dev replies that it's a good job he's such a damn good liar, as he's doing it for Deirdre as well as himself.

Hayley asks Roy to make a direct appeal to the council, but Roy says no, Curly did all that, and why would they change their mind. He comments that Hayley will be pleased that they are not going ahead, and he won't be boring her with it all.

Molly tells Kevin that she's not complaining, but that the nos of brochures she found hidden, she thought she was going on holiday. Kevin responds that things have been a bit slow at the garage, and it would be best that they wait. She replies she doesn't mind waiting, even till next year.

Eve comes to the Rovers to collect some clothes, but Fred tells her she know where they are, and crosses the road to go to see the baby. Audrey catches up with him, and stops him going there straight away. She asks how him and Eve are, and he tells her that she'll not get anything out of him. Audrey tells Fred that Eve wasn't good enough for him, and Fred replies that Audrey didn't want him, but she didn't want anyone else to have Fred neither. Audrey gives a wistful look.

Audrey goes to see Maxine, and she tells her that they are not having the test done, they got to the gates, and Ashley changed his mind. He's going to bring Joshua up as his own. Fred arrives to see his grandson, waking the baby in the process. Audrey says she won't ask Fred anymore questions, but she thought he may want a sympathetic ear. She asks if Eve will be coming back, and Fred tells her yes, but whether she will be stopping is another matter.

Geena corners Deirdre, and tells her that Dev said she couldn't keep her hands of him, Deirdre reluctantly agrees, and says she's sorry. Dev ushers Geena out of the shop, and she tells him that it's Ok she'll forget about the kiss, if he gets rid of Deirdre. He tells her, Deirdre will not go quietly, and everyone will know what happened. But if Deirdre steps just once out of line, he'll get rid of her.

Hayley goes to see Curly about the reenactment, and he tells her it's up to Cllr Naysmith, but whatever she's thinking of saying to him, he won't change his mind.

Molly tells Gail that Kevin had put off the holiday because of lack of funds, and Gail says she knows that Kevin let Sally a large sum of money, and it would have been enough for a weeks break. She then goes round to warn Sally, that she let something slip she shouldn't have to Molly, who couldn't understand why Kevin wouldn't take her on holiday. She feels that Molly will be saying something more to Kevin on the matter.

Hayley goes to see Cllr Naysmith to plead Roys case. He tells her that Cllr Watts had been told that the rules and regulations had not been complied with. Hayley explains that he didn't know about any rules and regulations, and that she can't bare watching all his work that has been for nothing, and begs him to overlook them , just this once.

Fred tells Ashley that he's been to get a temporary license for the Rovers. Ashley asks how things are with him and Eve, and is there no chance that they can get over what has happened. Fred replies that he wouldn't want Ashley to be going through this, and that he's a vain old man to think someone could love him.

Molly is sitting in the cafe, and Kevin asks if she's trying to avoid Martin again. She launches into him, saying that she quite understands coming second after Sally and his daughters,, but does he think she is that mean and nasty, she wouldn't have understood him lending Sally some money , rather than have a holiday, and he should have told her the truth.

Maxine tells Emily she 's past caring about sleep, and after she's gone, Ashley ask would it be better if he moved back into the bedroom with her. Maxine tells him only if he wants to. He tells her that it must have been awful for her, but he couldn't help himself, but he loves Joshua and his mum.

Geena sees Deirdre and Ken in the Rovers, and asks Shelly in a loud whisper, that if it were Shelly wouldn't she keep out of someone's way that she knew hated their guts. When Ken goes to the bar for another drink, celebrating his new school councilor post, Geena is over to Deirdre. She whispers is Deirdre going to stay there all night, and get drunk and pathetic, like the last time, until Dev had chucked her out on her backside. Deirdre retaliates, that that is his story, but she's saying nothing. After more goading from Geena Deirdre ask what does Geena think happened?

Geena storms off round to the corner shop, and screams that Xmas day was not like Dev said, he didn't throw Deirdre out, did he? Dev asks what Deirdre has said, but whatever happened - happened. Him and Geena had rowed, and he was on his own. He slept with her , 'yes'. And he asks Geena 'Is that what she told you?', and Geena replies 'No, but you have.'
