Friday 2 August

Tyrone comes out of the house to go to work, and spies Maria and Nick at an upstairs window chez Gail, in a passionate embrace. Kevin appears and speaks to a wistful Tyrone; Kevin is leaving him in charge while he goes off to sort some things. Kevin informs Tyrone that 'things work themselves out', like him and Sally...

In the cafe, Les is messily devouring a sandwich, and he regales an open-mouthed Steve with unsubtle hints about his Sydney Sandwich experience last night. Roy overhears them talking about this culinary treat and thinks it would go down well in his cafe.

Chez Gail, where the young lovers are still passionate. Nick has told Maria of his wonderful life in Vancouver - you can scuba-dive in the morning at Spanish Banks, and ski in the afternoon. Maria wonders where his heart is; his heart is in Weatherfield, for the moment!

In the cafe, Audrey tells Toyah that she suspects Nick and Maria have spent the night together, and both agree that they're against that. However, Toyah's reason is slightly different to Audrey's - she sees Nick as a scumbag, and the sooner he goes back to Canada, the better. Roy approaches Ken to ask him if he's ever had a Sydney Sandwich. Ken has never tried one. He reminds Blanche (who claims to be a war widow) that he has a meeting with his editor, and will be late home.

In the salon, Audrey tells the love-lorn Maria that Nick's future is in Canada, but that she'll meet a nice local lad. (Bit of a short-fall in supply in Weatherfield - nice local lads?)

In the Rovers, Emily is quietly reading the Church Times when the shell-suited Norris arrives and witters on about his meeting a Zambian prince at the Games. (Les guffaws in the background.) Will Emily remember to set the video, he asks. Kirk arrives and lets slip the real details of Les' Sydney Sandwich. Les admits, maybe, to a slight exaggeration, and collars Norris as he leaves for the Games, ridiculing him for his meager tasks of tearing tickets and picking up rubbish. Norris leaves hurriedly.

Kevin arrives at Sally's with a new tv for the girls' bedroom. He tells Sally that Tyrone knows about his moving back in. (Sally shrugs.)

At the Commonwealth Games, and we see a doleful Norris directing people here and there...

In the Rovers, Shelley is making sure that Geena has a lot to keep her busy, while Shelley is awaiting the arrival of a new tv for the bar. Shelley advises Geena to 'do as you're told'.

Back at the Games, and Norris eventually will have his moment of glory - a medal bearer has fallen ill and Norris will take his place, in a proper suit which he has bought for just this circumstance.

In the Rovers, Eileen tells Les how despicably he treated Norris. Les leaves, giving Kirk a hefty slap on the head as he exits. Kirk explains to Tyrone that he let folk know the truth about Les' so-called Sydney Sandwich and that he could have 'seen to' the Aussie girls himself. Tyrone comes over all puritanical about 'our women'!

Lunchtime at Gail's, and Maria is not hungry, although Nick has prepared waffles with maple syrup. She's going to miss Nick so much when he goes back to his wonderful life in Canada...

Commonwealth Games again, and Norris is getting changed for his medal-bearer's duties. He borrows a mobile and calls Emily to remind her to set the video, which she does.

Sally's house, and Kevin doesn't know where he's going to put all his clothes, which leaves him some explaining to do to the girls as to why he'll be sleeping downstairs. ('No more babies, then?', adds Rosie.)

In the editor's (Sandie's) office, Ken meets Doris Slack, who writes the weekly episode of romance for the paper. Sandie tells Ken that Doris is in 'The Last Chance Saloon' and is drinking her way out. She offers Ken the new challenge of writing a weekly bodice-ripper, but Ken declines. (Now, Ken could draw on his own experiences, eh?)

Back at the Games, and a proud, be-suited, Norris is ready for his moment of glory...

In the Rovers, Geena complains about her 'boss from Hell', Shelley, and she tells Toyah that she's now working to rule. Emily complains to Rita, Blanche and Betty that Norris is really getting on her nerves with his 15 messages on her answer machine today. Martin and Kevin enjoy a pint and a chat - they'll meet later, seeing that Nick prefers another's company to his...

Gail's house, and Maria arrives with a local delicacy, bam cakes. Nick is not hungry (for food!) and has something shocking to tell Maria - he's in love with her. As things turn out, she's in love with him too. (More noisy snogging ensues.)

Norris, pleased as Punch, receives the medal tray at the Games.

In the Rovers, Shelley moans to Peter that Geena is working to rule (working to rile, I nearly typed!). Peter advises her not to give in, and Shelley asks Geena to go and collect some empties - 'there's a good girl'. Rita asks for the new tv to be switched on to the Games transmission. Les has forgiven Kirk for blabbing about his Sydney Sandwich, but is less than pleased to discover that Kirk has consumed a half-eaten pork pie, with Les' teeth marks on it. (Ah, this British culture!) Roy arrives and asks Les to test his version of a Sydney Sandwich which he's made as a sort of prototype - Les is not impressed when he hears the ingredients...

Just as Norris preens himself for the medal ceremony, cut to Emily's house where the tape stops and rewinds. (All is not lost - the Games are on tv in the Rovers!!)

In the Rovers, Kirk and Les challenge Martin and Kevin to a darts match, the losers buying the drinks. All eyes are on the darts match while, in the background, we see a smiling Norris on tv after having carried the medal tray, with the strains of Elgar's Land of Hope and Glory ringing in his ears. In Norris' proudest moment, no-one notices...

Sunday 4 August

Kevin wanders outside in his dressing gown to collect the milk from the front door step of his 'new' home having moved back in with Sally the previous day. Blanche looks on disapprovingly, commenting to Emily that he is wearing his own dressing gown not Sally's, therefore, he must have stayed the night. They spot Norris walking towards them. Norris eagerly asks Emily if she taped the Commonwealth Games. She tells him that the tape ran out after 3 hours. A disappointed Norris assures them that he took part in the medal ceremony which would have been 3 hours and 2 minutes into the video if the tape had been on long play. The two women have trouble believing him as his initial job was tearing up tickets and picking up litter.

When Steve walks into the corner shop, Rita complains about his new sofa constructing the hallway of his flat. "It's a fire hazard," she moans. Norris and Blanche walk into the corner shop discussing non other than the Commonwealth Games and the latest Street scandal, Kevin and Sally's new arrangement.

Ashley asks Fred to baby-sit for him and Maxine tonight. Fred agrees. Shelley gives Geena a telling off for not warning her about the low supply of mixers. As she is still feeling bitter about losing out for the managers job to Shelley, Geena is not sorry.

Steve offers to buy Eileen a drink in the Rovers. She doesn't need to be asked twice even if she is suspicious of his motive. Steve asks her for ideas about where he can put his sofa. "How about in Karen's gob,"she smirks. "Or your backyard, replies Steve.

Meanwhile, Nick tells Martin that he's in love with Maria. Martin takes the news with a pinch of salt and reminds him that he will be in Canada this time tomorrow. Steve offers to buy Tyrone, Vikram and Kirk a drink if they all help him to move the sofa into Eileen's back yard.

Nick spots Tyrone in the Street and asks him if it bothers him that he's seeing his ex fiancˇe. "Why should it," he replies before turning green as Maria plants a kiss on Nicks cheek.

In the corner shop, Norris asks Eileen if she saw his medal ceremony at the Commonwealth Games. "No," is her answer. He turns to Sally and assures her that he didn't think she had seen him at his proudest moment, commenting "I'm sure you had other things on your mind," before walking away. Sally throws a shocked look to Rita who can't help getting a word in about the latest Street headline, "if it what makes you happy."

Martin looks for Nick in the Rovers. Nicks not there but he stays for a drink anyway. Blanche questions him about Sally and Kevin's new arrangement. A shocked Martin tells her to mind her own business.

Karen comes home from work in a shocked state. She thinks her precious sofa has been nicked but soon calms down when Steve tells her the truth.

Norris is delighted when Nick announces that he saw his grand medal ceremony on the box. He seems to be the only one and he is leaving the Street anyway so no one else may ever believe him.

Martin is angry that nor Sally or Kevin told him about their new housing agreement. He goes to see them to confront them both. He finds Sally without Kevin and asks her why she let Kevin move back when she had told him that she would never have him back.

Geena finished her shift at the Rovers and leaves Fred to manage the pub on his own. He phones around looking for Shelley leaving a handful of thirsty customers waiting to be served. When he finally starts serving Blanche exclaims, "I could have died of thirst." Fred replies sarcastically, "Stop trying to cheer me up!"

Maria cries at the thought of losing Nick to Canada. Nick bids a tearful farewell and boards the taxi. As they are halfway up the street he tells Steve to stop, "Have you forgot your passport?" he asks. Nick runs back to Maria and asks her if she wants to come and live in Canada with him. Maria accepts straight away. Nick promises to ring her when he gets back to arrange everything. He leaves a tearful Maria standing outside the Rovers Return grinning at the prospect of being with Nick after all.

Monday 5 August

Hello from me again! Dee has some family problems to sort out, so here I am looking after the shop as it were!

Tonight we find Sally looking through the jobs page of the newspaper. Kevin tells her not to worry because there is his wages coming in now. Sally retorts the whole idea was that there should be two lots of income coming in.

Maria seems cheerful in the flat. Toyah asks has she forgotten Nick already. Maria says on the contrary, she is going to fly out to Canada to join him.

Jason returns home. Todd can hardly believe it. He tells his brother that it will upset his mother, and they argue.

Steve arranges for a full refund on the sofa that they couldn't fit into the flat.

Tyrone tells Kev that he is pleased that Nick has gone back to Canada. He thinks it was just a holiday romance between Nick and Maria.

Toyah thinks Maria is silly to give up everything here and join Nick. She says that Maria hardly knows the guy.

Shelley tells Peter that Gina managed to set her up. She thinks that Fred thinks that she is useless.

Norris tells Rita that she has not heard from the tv company. He says that he is glad to be back at work. Rita thinks he is just missing the gossip. He says that he thinks that the Webster's remind him of Burton and Taylor. Martin overhears and tells Rita that they are not really living together. Rita says what they do is a private affair. They are doing it for the kids sake.

Ken tells Deirdre that he has had a call from the Editor regarding writing the romance stories for the paper. He said he would think about it.

Toyah tells Audrey about Maria's plans.

Shelly comes to work and apologises to Fred. She promises everything would be ok from now on.

Maria comes to Audrey with a letter. Audrey says that it must be her notice. Maria is surprised that she knows. Audrey queries whether Nick really meant what he said, was he serious?

Jason shocks his mother as he walks in. She wants to know if he is staying this time or if he is going to do more thieving.

Eileen wonders why Karen's sofa is in their room. The boys said they moved it in to stop it getting wet outside. They have put their one outside. Eileen insists they cover it up with wrapping from the new sofa. [There really doesn't seem to be much point in this - except for the next scene!].

Steve gets a phone call from the delivery men, they can't get a reply from the house. He tells them to go round the back. They go round [and guess what], and they take the wrong sofa away.

Gina thinks of an idea for centenary celebrations at the Rovers. She suggests having a 1d (that is 1 old penny!) a pint promotion. Shelley thinks it is a silly idea until Gina explains it. Because the old pennies are no longer in circulation, Fred thinks it is a brilliant idea. Gina tells Sunita [her only appearance!], that as senior barmaid she should have been made temporary manager. She has more ideas than Shelley.

Sally overhears Blanche gossiping about her at the bar. Sally gives her a piece of her mind.

Eileen goes out the back to find her sofa missing.

Kirk tells Tyrone and Fizz about Maria. Tyrone storms off.

Kevin thinks Sally has drawn attention to themselves in the bar. She says she doesn't mind. As long as they know what is going on.

Toyah tires to dissuade Maria again. Fizz comes round hoping that Maria will have some clothes for sale. [As if they would fit Fizz!].

Blanche complains to Fred about the ladies loo. She says it is blocked up. Fred tells Shelley to clean it. Shelley tries to get Gina to do it, and an argument entails. Fred then calls out to Shelley who reluctantly says she will do it.

Kirk and Tyrone discuss Maria. Tyrone says he feels sick.

Gina knocks into Shelley and spills beer all over her. Shelley is furious. They argue in the back room. Gina quits.

Wednesday 7 August

I missed the first couple of minutes of Corrie tonight , got back later than planned from a day in Matlock(visited a couple of mines)

Anyway enough rambling....

Peter offers to help Shelley behind the bar as he has had previous experience !

In the cafe , Martin teases Maxine about her forthcoming trip to Canada, he has a parcel of Chocolate for her to take to Nick. Maria is convinced that Toyah has been avoiding her. Toyah insists she isn't and she is worried about Maria, wondering why she has to give everything up for Nick. Maria points the obvious out, she lives in a bedsit ,washing hair for a living she may never get another chance to do this.

Kevin is folding his duvet up in the front room. A knock on the door, it's Martin offering his apologies and wishes them the best. Both, Sally and Kevin are pleasantly surprised.

Sally pops into the Kabin to pick up her wages, on seeing that Sally has kept the name Webster, Norris congratulates her on her foresight rattles on about what Angela did to him. Norris also picks a few magazines out for her with articles about how to cope when you have a man in your life after a period of being alone.

Fred is amazed to see Shelley struggling on her own behind the bar.He has heard a little of what has been going on but demands that Shelley finds Geena and gets her back behind the bar. Shelley finds Geena but she refuses.

Maria is washing Deirdre's hair , Deirdre will miss Maria's touch when she is gone. Deirdre reminisces about the Moroccan Waiter she ran away with , tells Maria to go for it. Audrey relents gives Maria her wages until the end of the week and sends her off to pack.

Peter's friend Kieran is coming to pay them a visit. Shelly agrees to him staying a few nights but is gobsmacked when she finds out he is arriving that evening. Not only is the flat not tidy but she will be left on her own behind the bar.

Audrey moans to Rita that not only is she losing her assistant but also a tenant. Rita offers to put her a 2 for1 card in the window advertising for both. Audrey doesn't trust Toyah to find a flatmate of her own, she may end up with another Spider. Fizz listens in the background.

Karen's name at work is now "Trailer trash" after the delivery men returned with Eileen's sofa as they thought the sofa was her old one. Karen has a fit when she finds out that Eileen is sitting on her posh couch . Rushes round to find them eating fried food on the Couch, although Eileen points out she has got a plate.

Betty turns up to help Shelley out behind the bar ,as she has been made to feel useful agrees to cover a few more shifts. Fred decides she looks tired whisks her off home letting Shelley know he isn't best pleased.

Peter brings his smooth talking friend Kieran into the rovers, Shelley has a quick chat with them leaving the bar unattended. Geena waltzes in making caustic comments about how you could die of thirst in this pub. Fred calls Shelley over ,Peter tells her to stand up for herself. Fred shows Shelley, the glasses with lipstick on and points out that the optics aren't right. Geena looks smugly on.

Friday 9 August

Breakfast time at Peter's flat, with Ciaran, the itinerant matelote, having spent the night on the couch, chatting to Shelley who's making tea. Ciaran assures her that she is still the boss at the Rovers, and a rather hung-over Peter appears to have his first ciggy of the day. Peter and Ciaran seem to be good mates. Ciaran decides to go for a shower, and Shelley looks a bit coy when he throws off the duvet to reveal that he's wearing boxer shorts. (Is she disappointed?)

At the garage, Tyrone is finding it difficult to concentrate on his work, since he's worried about Maria's imminent departure for Canada: what if she gets home-sick? Kevin, now installed again (albeit semi!) in the family home, reassures Tyrone that couples do split up. Who could have thought that Kevin and Sally would have got together again?

Toyah's flat, and Maria is packing her remaining belongings. Toyah answers the phone - Maria's Dad. Maria signals to Toyah that she's out, but assures Toyah that she'll speak to her Dad before she goes. All that's important to Maria is that she and Nick are together. Audrey flounces in with Toyah's new flat-mate and Toyah is fizzing mad as she realises that Audrey has rented the other room to Fiz. After all, Toyah can't afford to pay Maria's rent as well as her own, so...

Chez Barlow. Ken is talking over his proposition of being a bodice-ripper author for the local paper with Deirdre, just as Blanche appears. Silence ensues. While Blanche goes to make her own breakfast, Deirdre advises Ken to take the job - the money would come in handy. (Do ladies wear bodices these days? Just curious!) Ken will ring the editor and accept the job.

In the salon, Maria is grateful to Audrey for all she has done for her and Audrey assures Maria that she's "as lovely and elegant as Maxine". In spite of that, they hug each other.

On the street, Eileen meets Geena and says that she's surprised that Geena has left the Rovers... ... just as Karen appears with Steve and questions Eileen about the condition of the sofa, which is being returned, having been damaged, today. Steve reminds Karen that, before buying the sofa, they should have thought about a measuring tape, eh?

Sally's. Kevin has splashed out some money to Sally for Sophie and Rosie and also suggests a day out somewhere - maybe a Theme Park? (All looks too chummy to me!)

In the Rovers, Betty is back behind the bar in the interim. Peter and Ciaran appear and Peter introduces his friend to Eileen, Audrey and Betty, who all succumb to his Irish charm.

On the street, Audrey meets Toyah and tells her that she's just received a letter, and photos, from Steven. Apparently, Nick already has a live-in partner in Canada, Rachel, to whom he is about to get engaged. Should they tell Maria? No. (Now, who was it said that the first casualty of love [or was it war??] is truth?)

Back in the Rovers, Karen and Steve arrive and meet Ciaran, who seems to be all-charming to all the women (I know the feeling!!). Geena comes in and is met by a cool welcome from Shelley. Geena wants a reference, but from Fred. The charming Ciaran buys Geena a drink.

Toyah's flat, and Fiz starts to move her stuff in. (Lot of stuff, lot of Fiz!) Something of a charm offensive here, Toyah offering the charm, Fiz being offensive...

The Rovers, and Ciaran continues to charm all and sundry, even Ken and Deirdre. Blanche makes some disparaging remarks about Betty's being dragged back from retirement, but Betty used to work at t'mill, where she learned to lip-read. Blanche decides to say no more.

On the street, Sally and Kevin play happy families, while Karen accuses Eileen of having marked her very expensive sofa, which has been returned by the shop... ... and, in Eileen's house, we see that the sofa has been scuffed indeed. Steve just about manages to pull Karen and Eileen apart, and informs Karen that he'll put up the rent to cover their losses.

Toyah's flat. Fiz reckons a party is in order, to celebrate her moving-in. Toyah and Maria don't share her enthusiasm...

Sally and Kevin agree to have a family day out, with the girls, tomorrow. The girls think that's a great idea.

Chez Barlow. Ken's editor talks over his taking over the mantle of Hermione Fairfax's ripping yarns in the local paper, but he insists that his purple prose be anonymous. His editor wisely suggests that Ken draws on his own experience, and Deirdre agrees. 500 words for Monday, then?

In the Rovers, Maria is getting ready to depart for Canada. Tyrone would like to say something to her, but Audrey would like a word with her, privately, in the flat...

Back at Peter's, and Peter and the charming Ciaran are prepared for a boozy night, but Shelley has had a hard day and wants to get to bed. She's a bit miffed about their constant references to their old times at sea. Shelley leaves the old sea dogs together...

Toyah's flat, and Audrey reveals to Maria that she's had a letter, with photos, from Steven. Nick has a live-in girl-friend in Vancouver. Maria can't believe this, but Audrey shows her the photos. Tears ensue, and hugs, and we're left to imagine whether Maria will leave for Canada or not....

Sunday 11 August

Sunday August 11th 2002

Sunita and Doreen witness Sally, Kevin and their two young girls heading off for a family picnic. Doreen starts reminiscing about the good old days; taking Maxine out for a picnic. "Family holidays are the best days of your life," she says.

Two delivery men bring Eileen's old sofa back after mistaking it for a brand new, two grand model. Eileen denies that the sofa is hers and slams the door in their faces. Les, meanwhile tells them that it is Eileen's sofa. The delivery guys leave it outside her front door and leave. Les doesn't hesitate in taking the opportunity to try it out for size by sitting on it.

Shelley creeps around her living room, picking up empty beer cans and crisp packets, trying not to wake her new housemate Ciaran. He does wake up and they are both greeted by sleepy Peter who then compares the strength of his headache with Ciaran.

Les and Kirk try to squeeze Eileen's cast-off sofa into their lounge with difficulty. 11-year-old Rosie proves that she's growing up when she tells Kevin that hide and seek is boring. She soon changes her mind though when Kevin challenges her to hide, betting her and Sophie £1.50 each if he doesn't find them. "Ten minutes peace and quiet. The best three quid I've ever spent," he mutters to Sally. Picnic fever is sweeping over Weatherfield; When Eileen's sofa is finally in place in Les' back garden, he tells Kirk to buy some crisps, nuts and pork scratchings from the Rovers for a picnic.

Ciaran apologises to Shelley for leaving her flat in a state. He offers to make up for it later on but she turns him down insisting that she has to work.

Maria desperately tries to get hold of Nick in Canada but she can only get through to his answering machine. Kirk tells her that he'll be "made up," if she stays, "I'll really miss you if you go to Canada." He tells her before asking for her CD's she sold to him to make money for her trip. Kirk then heads off to the Rovers to collect the food for his and Les' picnic. Whilst waiting for Shelley to bring him is order, he spills the news about Nicks other girlfriend to Tyrone, who is relieved to hear that Maria may be staying in Weatherfield after all. Back at Maria's flat, the phone rings. Maria answers, hoping to hear Nick at the other end. "Tyrone, get off the phone," she sighs. She tells Toyah that she thinks everyone is laughing at her, "how could I have been so stupid?"

Kirk and Les discuss the pound a pint offer at the Rovers, how are they ever going to find some old pennies? Norris pops his head over the wall and asks them to turn their music lower. Les asks Norris if he's got some old pennies to show Kirk. "No," he replies, "but Emily has."

Nick rings Maria and Maria tells him that she's missed her flight. "I need to ask you a question," she says, "when you were here with me, did you have another girlfriend in Canada?" Tears run down Maria's cheeks as she hangs up the phone. The phone rings again, thinking it's Nick ringing her back with excuses, she covers it with her rucksack. It was Tyrone.

Ciaran offers Shelley a beer at her flat. "I refuse to take no for an answer," he tells her. Shelley thinks that Ciaran's getting too close for comfort and practically runs into her bedroom when Peter returns home.

Ken asks Deirdre for her thought on his work, "Is it too much? Should I tone it down a bit?" Deirdre seems impressed "put it this way, do you fancy an early night?"

Back home, Sally and Kevin reminisce about their day out with the girls. Kevin leans in to kiss Sally. Sally backs away and tells him that he's ruined the whole day, before sprinting up the stairs to bed.

Monday 12 August

Hi everyone, It is great to be back if you know me, if not I am doing this for Jeanette.

(Written By: Peter Whalley Directed By: Iain Bevitt)

Tonight's episode starts in Shelley and Peters flat with Shelley discussing Ciaran with Peter and she asks how long will he be staying and Peter tells her not long, and Shelley tells him he has a lot to drink but Peter tells her he is not touching it today and Shelley tells him he spends more time with him than her. but you like him most women do and tells him yes she does as he goes out to work.

In Number 13, Sally is surprised to see Kevin up and dressed so early he says morning then Sally asks him if he has had breakfast and he says a bit, he then tells her they are not all on holiday and some of us have got to work and on his way out he says morning to the kids. Sophie then asks "What is the matter with dad" and Sally tells the girls nothing, Rosie then asks her mum if they have had another argument and she tells them no they have not he just has a lot on at work. Sophie then asks if he is coming back and Sally tells them yes go and set the table for breakfast.

In Audrey's Salon, Toyah tells her that Maria spent all of yesterday trying to talk to Nick and then he rang her back and told her he had a live-in girlfriend in Canada and Audrey asks if she is still upset and Toyah tells her yes and in the state Maria is in she is just going to mope about in the flat all day and could she please get her job back.

In the flat above the Salon, Fizz tells Maria to look at this way if Nick had not told her and she had gone all the way to Canada and found out and Maria tells and that makes it all right does it and Fizz tells her at least she knows. Toyah then comes in and tells Maria she should get up and they ill go and get some breakfast but Maria tells them she does not wont any. Audrey then comes in and tells Maria she knows that she has resigned from her job but she is going to be run off her feet so she wondered if she could go and give her a hand, Maria tells her no and Toyah tries to tell her to come on and Audrey tells her she will see her in half an hour but Maria tells her to go away and Toyah and Fizz tell her they will count to ten.

Back at Shelley and Peter's flat, Ciaran asks Shelley how she is and she tells him good and to help himself to anything as she has to go. Ciaran then asks if it is another long day at the bar and Shelley tells him they are all long days at the moment. Currant tells her don't they relies that she has a life outside that place but Shelley tells him that they are short staffed at the moment and with Geena gone there is only her and Fred and Betty who is supposed to be retied and Ciaran asks how old Betty is and can not get over she is over 80. He also tells her Fred should be looking after her not running her into the ground Shelley tells Ciaran Fred is busy as well and Ciaran tells her not to work to hard.

On the Street, Tyrone calls after Kirk and asks how Maria is but Kirk tells him he does not know he has not seen her so Tyrone tells him he will see him in a bit then.

In the garage, Kevin spots Sally across the street and shouts to see if she want a drink at dinner time but Sally tells him she would love to but there would be nobody to look after the girls and Kevin tells her to forget the drink. Eileen then comes up and asks how she is and Sally tells her she can't do right for doing wrong.

Further up the street, Kirk goes to ask Emily for some old pennies as Norris said she may have some and he tells her he collects them so Emily asks if he is a Numismatist and does he collect coins and Kirk tells her yes so she invites him in while she looks for them.

In the Cafe, Geena is telling Joe that she has had a letter this morning that said thank you but post has been filled and Joe tells her she applied for two but she tells him they called last night as well. Joe then tells her she probably won't like this but she could always go back to the Rovers but Geena tells him no not to work with Shelley. Joe then tells her it is Fred who would be employing her and she could have terms on which to work so Geena phones him up.

In the Rovers hallway, Fred is delighted when Geena phones up to find out if he would be interested in taking her back as she has had very few offers and not said yes to any of them. Fred tells her yes he would be very interested as good barmaids don't grow on trees. Geena then tells him she would like to one or two things first like "Would I be working for you and not Shelley" and Fred tells her yes he owns the place don't I. Then Shelley comes in so Fred stops his conversation but when Shelley goes he asks Geena in to talk about it. Geena then tells Joe who is beside her in the Cafe and Joe tells her yes she has nothing to loose and they agree a time to meet at the Rovers.

Back on the street, Kirk has got his old pennies from Emily and asks if he can give her anything for them but Emily tells him no she is only glad someone is putting them to good use. Doreen then comes round the corner with Joshua and says good morning to Emily who seems pleased to see Joshua.

At the garage, Kirk goes to see Tyrone and tells him he has a load of old pennies and he can get a pint for every one, Tyrone then asks if she is all upset and Kirk tells him Emily is fine and Tyrone tells him his sister Maria and Kirk tells him he does not know as Maria does not tell him anything and he starts to count his pennies.

In Underworld, Mike is on the phone and shouts to Joe to she if he heard there chat and Joe tells him no he did not who was it. Mike tells him it was Ron Raffurty and Joe tells him that is the wholesales Macalesfield and Joe asks Mike what he wanted and Mike tells him he has invited him and his wife to dinner, but Mike tells Joe that he did not want to tell him he did not have a wife and that she was in Dublin. Joe then tells Mike that there is not a problem as he has a whole sewing room out there and Mike tells him that he wants someone who can hold a knife and fork and Joe tells him he is sure Janice can and Mike just laughs and then Joe says Fizz but Mike tells him none of them.

Back in the Rovers Bar, Shelley is busy with the lunchtime rush serving Audrey and Maria. Fizz then comes over to ask Maria if she is all right and Audrey tells her she has done very well and that was very nice of her to come and ask, but then Fizz tells Maria that she is well rid of the rat, but Audrey tells Fizz to stop and they should hear Nick's side of the story Maria is a bit annoyed at that. Fred then asks Shelley if he can have a quick word with her but Shelley tells him when she gets a minute as she is rushed off her feet and she has a full bar and she goes to serve Mike. Mike then goes to ask Audrey what she is doing on Wednesday night as he has been invited out to dinner and he needs someone civilized and Audrey tells him that is very flattering and Mike tells her he will pick her up about 7.30 and Audrey wants to know what's involved and Mike tells her he will be talking a bit of business but all she will have to do is be charming. Kevin comes in with Tyrone and asks if he wants a pint and Tyrone goes and has a word with Maria and tells her he is sorry to hear about Nick and Maria tells him is not and Tyrone tells her he is glad she is not going to Canada and she will still be around. Geena then comes in and Joe asks if she is all set and then Shelley comes over and Geena asks if Fred has told her and Shelley asks what. Geena tells her that I am coming back and Shelley goes and asks Fred and then when she knows it is true she tells Fred she has resigned and walks out.

INTERVAL

Back in Shelley and Peters Flat, Fred has phoned up from the Rovers to beg Shelley to come back he tells her to come in and they will talk about it, but she tells him like he begged Geena to come in and talk about it but Fred tells her he did not and Geena phoned him and asked if she could have her job back and he never said she could and he tells Shelley he can not do without her and Shelley ask if Geena is going to be there and Fred tells her it is up to her and she says she wants to hear what Geena has got to say so they agree in about an hour. When Shelley comes off the phone she is surprised to see Ciaran who tells her she was very convincing and she asks him what was and he tells her the way she sounded like she did not want to go in at any point and Ciaran tells her getting rid of Geena should be her main priority but Shelley tells him they need someone and all she wants to know is she in charge and will Geena except it.

In the Backyard at Number 5, Les is surprised to learn that Emily did not want anything for the old pennies and tells Kirk he should of asked if she had any old tenors. Kirk then tells him that they should keep what they want and sell the rest so that people are still getting cheep pints, but Les tells him that he can sell them he just wants 10. Kirk then tells him he called him something and Les tells him she would not be swearing and perhaps she fancies him.

in the Rovers back room, Fred then tells everyone that he wants them to say what ever it is they are thinking so Shelley starts by asking is she manager or not? Fred tells her yes and then Geena tells Fred she is not coming back and Fred tells Geena not to be hasty and Shelley tells her she has worked 12 hour days since she walked out and then Geena tells Shelley to remember why she walked out and Shelley tells Fred this is not worth it, and Fred asks Betty if she has anything to say and she says no. Shelley then tells Fred he needs to decide if she is manager or not and then Fred says if Geena fells she is getting hard done to she can come to him and he will weigh up both sides of the argument he then tells them he wants them both and Shelley asks again if she is manager and Betty tells her she is and Fred agrees so Geena asks that means she has to like or lump it does it and Betty tells her yes.

Back in the flat above the Salon, Fizz comes back to find Maria moving stuff out so she asks Toyah if she is going and Toyah tells Fizz yes she is moving into the store room in the salon that is of course if you want to move into the store room and let Maria have her room back. Fizz tells Toyah that is not fair as she was suppose to be going to Canada and it was her choice not to go. Toyah then gets annoyed with Fizz but she refuses to let Maria have her room back.

Back in the Rovers bar, Doreen comes in followed by Mike and Fred introduces them and Mike tells Fred that her husband parked him lorry in front of his car once and Doreen tells him ex husband and Mike tells her he is sorry to hear that. Fred then tells them that they all are a couple of cast offs and the "walking wounded of wars fought and lost" and Mike smiles and so does Doreen. Peter then comes in to ask Shelley if she is all right as Ciaran what happened this morning but Shelley tells peter that she is and that she is still manager and Geena can only come back if she wants to take orders from her.

In number 13 backyard, Sally tells Eileen that Kevin has hardly said a word he had his tea and went straight to the Rovers and Sally tells Eileen she is beginning to wonder what the point is of him loving here, but Eileen tells her has she tried asking what the matter is and Sally tells her it is because she will not go to bed with him but she nearly dud last night Eileen is surprised. The girls then come in and ask if Kevin is coming back and Sally says he is.

Back in the Rovers bar, Fred tells Shelley that Geena is starting next Wednesday and Shelley asks if she is excepting that she is manager and Fred tells her she is but not with very good grace. Sally comes into apologies to Kevin for the last couple of days and has a drink while Eileen watches the girls at home. Over in A booth Doreen tells Mike that Maxine must be wondering how long she will be staying for and Mike asks her but she does not know.

Back at Shelley and Peter's flat, Shelley tells Peter and Ciaran that Geena is coming back and Peter tells her he would not of had her back but Shelley tells them Fred knows to back me or I am out. Peter then goes off to bed and Ciaran offers Shelley another drink for her victory over Geena and Shelley tells him it was a victory and he tells her good over bad.

Back in number 13, The girls come to see if there dad is still there and Sophie tells her dad that Rosie did not believe he was here, but Rosie tells Sophie she did not know and Sophie asks why is he sleeping down here and Kevin tells her she knows why and they both go to bed glad.

Back at Shelley and Peter's flat, Shelley tells Ciaran that she is not going to let Geena override her as manager and then Shelley gets up as she realizes she is on his bed and Ciaran makes a move on her and she gets annoyed and asks him to leave as soon as possible.

That is where this episode ends.

Wednesday 14 August

Friday 16 August

Bright and early in Toyah's flat, where Maria has decided to forget about the dastardly Nick. Toyah reckons a celebration is in order tonight and Maria agrees, while Fiz listens-in to their chat behind a door.

Peter is not feeling so bright this morning - he has a massive hangover (normal these days) and Shelley advises him to lay off the booze a bit. Ciaran appears in a bath robe, and Shelley hurries off, leaving Ciaran the opportunity to advise Peter that Shelley will be checking his cholesterol next.

Back to Toyah's flat, and Fiz offers Maria her room back. In her astonishment, Maria invites Fiz to the girls' night out.

Back room at the Rovers, where Fred is trying, and failing dreadfully, to engender a modicum, I say a modicum, of enthusiasm for the Rovers' centenary from Betty, who remains dysphoric about the whole thing.

Kirk is trying. He is also trying to sell some old pennies to Kevin, who chases him away.

Audrey meets Doreen, who seems remarkably bright-eyed and bushy-tailed after her night of wine and brandies, and Audrey makes it clear that she's upset that Doreen had replaced her at the dinner. Did Doreen offer 'pudding' to Mike? she hisses. Audrey storms off, feeling sorry for Mike for what he's getting himself into...

In the Rovers, Fred is pleased that Betty is there again with her hotpots, and once more mentions next Sunday's celebrations, with his usual lack of success. Fred thinks he's a one-man band, instead of the leader of a good team. Toyah and Maria both bemoan the fact that Fiz will be joining them on their night out, but Maria is pleased she has her room back. Did Fiz overhear their conversation, they wonder? (Do cows moo?) Peter arrives with the glad tidings for Shelley that Ciaran, his best mate, is staying 'a few more days'. Shelley reluctantly agrees.

In the Corner Shop, a smiling Mike meets Doreen, who tells him that she's not at all pleased at getting an ear-bashing from Audrey, and she adds to a now-unsmiling Mike that he'd best see Audrey and explain what happened, before she gets the reputation of being a man-hunter.

Kirk is still intent on selling his ill-gotten collection of old pennies, now to Sunita, but he fades from the scene as Shelley approaches, and confesses to Sunita about Ciaran's having made a pass at her. Sunita says she must tell Peter what his so-called mate is doing behind his back.

In the Salon, Toyah and Maria are having their done by Maxine prior to their big night out. Their plans do not include boys, but Fiz opts put of that clause.

In the street, Mike catches up with Audrey and does his best to explain the situation about his having taken Doreen to the dinner and not Audrey. However, his attempts at smoothing things out only make matters worse as far as Audrey is concerned, and she now feels sorry for Doreen.

The Rovers, and Audrey orders a double gin and tonic. Ciaran orders a pint from Shelley, and he explains that his pass wasn't a pass at all, but a 'test', which she passed with flying colours. Peter is a lucky man, he says. Just as Shelley leaves, Peter arrives, not for a drink, but to tell Shelley to go home and he'll do the cooking. Peter joins the devious Ciaran for an orange juice.

In the street, Sally thanks Eileen for looking after the girls and, as they get to the Rovers, Eileen wonders where people are going to get their hands on old pennies. Les appears, and has the answer... (If Les has the answer, it must have been an easy question!)

Shelley again meets Sunita on her way home and tells her what Ciaran has told her - the 'pass' was just a test. Shelley wants rid of Ciaran, however, as soon as possible.

The Rovers, and Ciaran again exercises his (b)roguish charms on the three girls, buying them drinks. Maria skips to the loo, and meets Tyrone, who's pleased that Nick is out of her life. Maria tells him that he was a saint compared to Nick. Peter refuses a whisky and sips his orange juice, then tells Ciaran they have to get home. They leave... Audrey tells Fred that, for Sunday's celebration, they should have some music - a sing-song - with good old songs like Down at the Old Bull and Bush, which Fred thinks is a great idea. Eileen, who's bought some old pennies from Les, is looking forward to seeing Fred's face when so many old pennies are handed over on Sunday. Fred is convinced that not many old pennies will appear. (Bad pennies, maybe?)

Peter's flat. Shelley is surprised to see Ciaran return on his own. Peter is off for a take-away, the Irish blaggard explains, and can Shelley and he put the past behind them and start again.

The Rovers, and Audrey and Doreen join forces against Mike and have a friendly drink together. Kirk complains to Les that he hasn't sold many old pennies, but Les explains to Kirk that he need not worry - all the more pints for them on Sunday. A penitent Mike arrives and offers the two ladies a drink, which they accept. 'How long can we make him sweat for?' asks Audrey. Doreen suggests 'until last orders'. Just as the three girls are leaving for a night on the town, Maria is faced with someone at the door of the pub. Nick!!

Peter's flat, where, in the temporary absence of Peter, Ciaran, who's convinced that Shelley fancies him (just as much as he fancies himself!) makes another pass at Shelley, who has to fight him off, literally.

Nick, in the Rovers, sits down with Maria and tries to explain his situation. Maria doesn't want to know, and she leaves with Toyah and Fiz for their night out. Nick holds his head in his hands.

Back at Peter's flat, where Ciaran's true colours are clear. Shelley orders him out of the flat and threatens to tell Peter about his shenanigans, but Ciaran explains to Shelley that, if she tells Peter, he'll claim that it was Shelley who came on to him. He goes on to explain that Peter, some years ago, had a partner, Jessica, whom he caught in bed with another man one night and, since that event, Ciaran nursed Peter through the trauma of that and was there with him throughout the following days and nights. Peter trusts Ciaran, implicitly. If Shelley tells Peter, whom will he believe? Will Peter not believe that one more woman has 'done the dirty' on him?

Sunday 18 August

Hi. Not long come up from watching the final hour of 24. Can I just say what a great series that was. Kept me on the edge of my seat a number of times. Wonder what the next series will be about? Surely he can't be kidnapped again!

Anyway onto tonight's Coronation Street ...

Gina is putting up a sign outside the Rovers, we don't actually see it, but presumably it is about the centenary celebrations.

Nick calls round to see Maria. Toyah won't let him in. He calls up to her from the street. Maria looks at him from the window.

Shelley tells Sunita (who has very minor parts these days!) that Ciaran made another pass at her. She tells her that if Shelley tried to tell the police or Peter he would deny it and say that it was her that initiated it.

Fizz tells Maria that Nick is still outside. Maria says she doesn't want to see him again.

Peter tells Shelley how much he loves her. She tells him that she would never cheat on him and he trusts her. She then tells him about the two passes that Ciaran tried to make at her. Peter threatens to kill him.

Ken is discussing with Deirdre some "agony aunt" letters he has received. One is from a girl at his school who has actually signed it. He passes one letter to Deirdre who recognises her mother's handwriting. She tells Ken that he must answer it positively.

Les, Ken and Steve are trying to move a piano from Norris' room to the Rovers for the sing-a-long. (I thought the Rovers had their own piano for just these occasions ?!).

Tyrone tells Nick to go back to Canada.

Sunita offers to baby sit for Curly (something must happen that will give her a storyline!).

Shelley tells Sunita that she told Peter. Sunita asks whether she mentioned about his threat to say she was responsible. Shelley says that Peter lost his temper so quickly that she didn't have a chance.

Peter confronts Ciaran when he returns home. Ciaran says it was Shelley that made the passes.

Fred is surprised that Steve has old 1 pence (1d) coins. They were in circulation before he was born.

Roy spoils the occasion by showing Fred the research he has done about the history of the Rovers. It does not confirm to Fred's celebrations.

The regulars at the Rovers are having a sing-a-long with Norris at the piano.

Audrey tells Nick off for shouting in the street outside Maria's flat. He says he still loves her.

Peter comes to the pub to see Shelley.

Nick returns to the flat to call Maria again. She comes down and opens the door. He says that his old girlfriend is not important anymore. Maria is the most beautiful girl he has ever met.

Peter tells Shelley that Ciaran says that she made the pass. She denies it. Peter believes him rather than her.

Betty and Gina are looking at an old 1d piece. Gina tells Fred that Les is selling them for 50p each.

Shelley pleads with Peter to believe her. He just says that Ciaran wouldn't lie.

Fred asks Les if he's selling pennies. He says he got them from Emily. Emily says she gave them to Kirk because she thought he was a collector. Roy says that there were not many coins minted that year, so the coins are probably valuable and worth £10 each. Fred's eyes light up until Ken suggests that he might like to donate the profit to the community.

Shelley tells Peter she is going to move out of his flat.

Ken calls a toast to the Rovers Return as Shelley leaves sobbing.

Maria and Nick settle their differences.

Back at Peters flat, Peter tells Ciaran he is not going clubbing and Ciaran tells him to come as it will be a right laugh but Peter tells him to go with Steve, Ciaran tells him he has a really boring side to him as he used to be the life and soul of the party. Peter asks him why because he could drink solidly for 48 hours without a rest and being sick in doorways chasing women. Ciaran then tells him that they used to have some great nights and peter tells him that he has changed and that having a great night are a bit different from his now, Ciaran can not get over that he likes to stay at home with a few cans of beer these days but Peter tells him he is not on shore leave anymore and he does not have to cram as much drinking in 48 hours as he used to he has a business to run now, Ciaran then asks if Shelley sis this to him and Peter tells him he just thinks there is more to life now and Ciaran tells him to stop talking to him like he is his dad and Peter tells him to stop talking to him like he is 22. Ciaran then tells him he knew the score as soon as he walked in the door and Shelley has him right where she wants him under the thumb. Peter then asks Ciaran if that is why he wanted to split them up.

Back at the flat above the salon, Nick is on the phone to the airline and he tells Maria they are just checking seat availability. Toyah and Fizz then come in, Fizz tells Maria she hopes he is going to pay for the phone call and Toyah tells her she does not even pay the bill and Fizz tells her she will when it is in her name. Maria then asks Toyah if it is all right if he stays in her room as Gail and Richard are back and Toyah says that is fine and Fizz tells her more the merrier for a few days, Nick then comes off the phone and tells Maria they have two seats for Wednesday night and she tells him ok then and Toyah says is it all back on then and Maria tells her yes it is.

Back at Peters flat, Ciaran tells Peter that this is ridicules as he would not try and split anyone up and Peter tells him he just said he hates to see him tied to some little women, Ciaran tells him he cam do what ever he likes with her but peter tells him he wanted to get her out the way so that he could get one up on them and Ciaran asks why and Peter tells him because he is jealous of what they had. Ciaran then asks what is it as Peter is his best mate and Peter tells him he has made a pass at every other girl on the street so why should Shelley be an exception and then he says after other things for Ciaran to pack his bags and get out before he throws him out.

Back at number 8, Richard is on the phone and is annoyed by the estate agent and tells him he has just come back off honeymoon and he could say he has come down to earth with a thud, Audrey and Gail then come through from the kitchen and Audrey asks what that is all about and Gail tells her a problem with the flats by the sound of it, Audrey then tells Gail not to worry about Nick and Gail tells her when she got back and saw him on the doorstep she thought for a minute he had decided to stay, then says bye to Sarah and David. Richard tells the estate agent that their must be something he can do as he is not taking this laying down, Richard then slams the phone down and shouts he hopes he chocks on his Beef Stroganoff and Gail asks who and Richard tells her the estate agent as the only thing he can say is he is in the middle of a dinner party and can I call him in the morning. Gail is shocked to hear when Richard tells her all four sales have fallen through as they are building a bale hostel on the same road as the ridings Gail ask whets the problem and Richard tells her people want to live somewhere scenic not next to a load of ex convicts and Richard then goes on to say if he does not get this deal he is ruined.

That is how this episode finished.

Wednesday 21 August

The scene opens at Gail's, with Richard picking at his breakfast, still worried about how he's going to sell the flats. Gail suggests that, maybe, he has some recourse to an appeal (Richard appealing?). He rushes off to his local councilor, Councilor Watts, with the words 'never say die!' (Never? -Well, hardly ever...)

Peter's flat, and Shelley arrives to collect some clothes. (She thought he'd be at work.) Peter explains to the hurt Shelley that he now realises just how conniving and devious Ciaran is and that he has chucked him out. Peter puts the kettle on for the English panacea - a cuppa tea!

In Toyah's flat, Maria is busy getting ready to leave for Canada. Check-in 7pm. Toyah relents in her hostility and wishes her all the best. Hugs. Fiz, Weatherfield's 'material girl', broaches the subject of Maria's CD player, and receives it as a parting gift. Martin arrives to say cheerio to Nick and, also, to remind him to say good-bye to his Mum before he leaves. Nick feels that his Mum should make the first move, since he's done nothing wrong.

Back at Peter's, where he grovels to Shelley and pleads with her not to leave. Nothing she could say could make him feel any worse. (Wanna bet?) Shelley accuses Peter, who can hardly look her in the eye, of having betrayed and insulted her, and Peter admits that what he did was quite unforgivable. Shelley agrees, so forgiveness is out of the question. She wants a man who trusts her and that she can trust - and Peter fails on both counts.

Blanche bumps into an unsuspecting Archie on the street and invites him, as a friend, to a Whist Drive on Friday night. Somewhat reluctantly, he agrees.

In the cafe, Maria says her goodbyes to Vera. More hugs. Tyrone arrives and says a rather curt goodbye to Maria (no hugs), before ordering two bacon butties as Maria leaves. Richard enters and finds Councilor Watts. What could Richard be after?

Chez Sally and Kevin, where little Rosie has a tummy bug. Sally assures Kevin that he can go off to work and she'll look after their ailing daughter. Is this happy families, at last?

Back in the cafe, Richard explains his little local difficulty to Curly, who is unsympathetic, and Richard offers to set up an off-shore investment for Curly if he can see his way to help. Curly angrily rejects this out of hand, and adds that this planning permission was agreed weeks ago, and he voted in favour! (Can things get worse for Richard? Oh, yes they can...)

In the street, Steve arrives in his taxi for the airport run, and Maria's friends gather (yet more hugs) to wish her 'bon voyage', while the hapless Tyrone looks on from a distance. Nick sees his Mum and runs along to say goodbye and to reassure her that he'll not mess up this time. (Yet still more hugs.) The taxi drives off with Tyrone watching sadly...

Blanche rushes in to Ken and Deirdre's clutching the local paper - her letter to Hermione has been published on 'her' problem page. The 'wise' Hermione's advice is three-fold: a man that can't forgive should be forgotten; if she wants love, she should seek pastures new and finally; a woman of her age should move into sheltered housing. Blanche is none too keen on the latter suggestion, while Deirdre glares at Ken...

In the cafe, Tyrone pours his heart out to Vera - he feels that it's almost as if Maria were dead, for he'll never ever see her again. Vera suggests that he should have made it clear to Maria how he feels, and Tyrone decides to follow her to the airport. Is there still time?

In the Rovers, a jovial Archie is snubbed by Blanche - 'You're history!', she informs him. (Lucky Archie!!) Richard tries his sales technique on Steve, and asks him to make him an offer, which Steve does - one pound. Steve explains to Richard that it's Karen who doesn't want the flat any more, for she has grown up among undesirables and doesn't want to bump into anyone she knows from the planned Bail Hostel. (Sorry, I shouldn't laugh. Heh!) Richard gives up his sales pitch and...

... just as he's leaving, he meets a smiling Archie who presents him with the bill for the wedding cars.

Chez Sally and Kevin, where Kevin sits on the sofa stroking the head of his sleeping Rosie. Sally tells him she'd forgotten how good he is with the 'gurls' and that, no matter Gail's prediction of gloom, they're getting on fine and things are working out, aren't they? (Aren't they??)

The airport. Nick and Maria have just checked-in, with two hours to go before boarding, when an excited Tyrone (still in his dungarees) runs up and demands to speak to Maria for five minutes. Nick agrees. Maria leads him off for some privacy. Tyrone confesses his love for Maria, but she wants adventure and, oh, Nick. Tyrone pleads with Maria to give him a chance - does she not remember May 20 at the top of Blackpool Tower when she nearly kissed him? - but Maria's set her heart on Canada.

Chez Gail, and Richard is a worried man, quite oblivious to Gail's prattling on about Nick and Maria and Sally and Kevin. If he doesn't manage to sell the flats, he's in big, big trouble...

Back at the airport, Maria has made her choice - Nick. She and a broken-hearted Tyrone share a final hug and a whispered goodbye, then she goes off with Nick for her new life in Canada.

Friday 23 August

Friday morning on the street and Sally takes the milk in as Kevin leaves for work. He suggests a night out, a meal maybe, for the two of them but Sally doesn't think it's a good idea. (Kevin did!)

In Toyah's flat, Fiz is late for work but suggests a girls' night in to Toyah, who doesn't think it's a good idea. (Take that as a 'no' then?)

Chez Gail, and Richard is again worrying out loud about the effect the Bail Hostel will have on his flats' prices. He reckons Mrs Lawson knew about the plans before she died, as did her solicitor, but they didn't tell Richard. Nor did Richard's chief suspect - the late, but unlamented, Duggie. He must have known too, but just wanted to make a killing, as Richard so quaintly puts it. He adds that, if that was the case, then he got what he deserved. Gail looks shocked at this most un-Christian outburst. (Oops, wee Freudian slip there, Richard!)

Peter comes out the Corner Shop and bumps into Shelley. Peter greets her, but is rebuffed by a stony frosty silence and a glare. ('Tis better to have loved and lost, Peter, than never to have loved at all - much better.)

In the garage, Kevin works and Tyrone mopes about Maria. (See above, Tyrone!) Martin and Kevin trot out some sage advice about there being more fish in the sea, but Tyrone is in no mood for their wise advice. To make matters worse, an excited Kirk arrives with the glad tidings that he's received his first overseas phone call, from Maria - Nick and Maria are safely in Canada, and Kirk reckons it'll be wedding bells soon. Tyrone ponders on what he's lost.

In the cafe, Vera wonders if Toyah and Fiz are getting on alright. Well, no, says Toyah. Roy asks why not, and Toyah points out the glaringly obvious that she's loud, brash and crude. Roy avers that Fiona [that's Fiz to you and me!] is a very insecure girl and that there's more to Fiz than meets the eye. (Shouldn't that be 'less', Roy?) Vera adds that Fiz told her that she only experienced a proper family when she stayed with Roy and Hayley, which news brightens Roy's day.

Doreen pops her dizzy head into the cafe, to ask about local bus services, since she's not used to travelling by bus. Roy offers his guidance and she departs, leaving Vera to moan about Doreen's airs and graces - 'If you gave her a bag, she'd ride side-saddle'. (No, I didn't get that one either!)

Mike arrives at the factory and Dev meets him outside, to offer him the chance of a business deal with Dev's cousin, who's into ladies' underwear (not literally, perhaps). Mike is suspicious, but he wants to know more.

Gail's house again, and she wants the truth from Richard about his financial straits. She is appalled by what she hears - the conversion cost 300,000 pounds; he expected to sell each of the four flats for 120,000; now he'll be lucky to sell each of them for 60,000 pounds.

Chez Peacock, and Ashley is enjoying the peace and quiet with Maxine [where is little Josh?] when Doreen arrives, bearing gifts, well, a gift. Maxine is euphoric, and Ashley is not, to discover that she's bought them a hand-painted sign for their house. (We don't get to see the sign yet, so no peeking!!) Doreen issues the order: "Ashley, get your drill out."

In the Rovers, Eileen and Sally discuss how things are, you know, with Kevin. Sally tells Eileen about Kevin's wanting to take her out tonight, but 'one thing could lead to another'... Eileen understands. Peter enters. He doesn't want a drink. (Yes, you read that correctly.) He pleads with Shelley to listen to him, but Shelley is adamant that it's over between them.

The Peacock domicile, where Ashley is busy screwing the sign to the wall, watched by Maxine and her Mum. Ashley says that, if he were asked, a number would suffice, but Doreen reminds him that he wasn't asked. At last, we see the house sign in all its glory - Balmoral. (What could be more apt for a house on Corrie Street?)

In the Corner Shop, Dev tells Joe to pass the message to Mike that details of their 'deal' will be with him on Monday morning. Dev seems chuffed that Joe has no idea what he's talking about.

Sally's house, and Kevin arrives home to the wonderful news that they're having a special treat for dinner - chicken. Kevin wonders what the celebration is. (No chip butties, then?? Tsk tsk, Sal.) Sally suggests that Kevin go off to the Rovers for a pint but, no, he'd rather stay home with her and Rosie. [Sophie is having a sleepover with one of her pals.]

The Rovers, and Eileen and Sunita ask Shelley about Peter. It's over, she says, for he believed his pal before he believed her. (Is romance dead on Corrie these days? Read on...) Vera rushes in with the news about the Peacocks' house-sign - Balmoral. What could be more classy? Roy avers (he always 'avers', eh?) that this is a reflection of the working class copying the aristocrats, with their 'houses' being called Chatsworth, Blenheim and so on. He goes on (Roy does go on!) to talk about the ideal house name, which exudes tradition and heritage, but the scene fades before we're let in on the secret... ('Merci' for small mercies.)

Ken's abode, and he's offering support and paternal advice to Peter on his break-up with Shelley. Ken advises his errant son not to give up.

Sally's house again, where Kevin and Rosie look at some photos of the family together, while Sally listens-in, unseen to father and daughter, in the background. Rosie asks her Dad why her Mum used to smile so much, but not now. Sally (smiling!) announces that dinner will be in ten minutes.

In the Rovers, Mike meets the troubled Richard and commiserates with him about his bad luck with the flats. Richard bluffs his way out and remains cheerful, it would appear. Joe makes clear to Mike that he's unhappy about being kept in the dark about the deal with Dev (only a corner-shop grocer) but Mike reminds Joe that Dev has seven corner shops, and Joe will be the first to know as soon as any deal is done.

Sally's, and the celebratory meal of chicken over, it's time for Rosie to go to bed. Kevin looks so happy. Sally looks so happy. [Especially now that Rosie is off to bed??]

Richard explains to Gail that they have to keep his troubles secret, otherwise he may lose the trust of people. However, Gail comes up with a solution - remortgage her [their!] house, which Richard rejects immediately.

Kevin, after his sumptuous chicken dinner, has seen Rosie tucked-up in bed and he comes downstairs again. No, he hasn't told Rosie a bed-time story. They just talked about how he and Sally first got together. Sally seems happy, and they both go into the kitchen to do the washing-up, but not before a few eye-to-eye contact moments together on the sofa. (Will this be sofa and no further?)

Fiz lounges, can of beer in hand, in front of the TV, when Toyah arrives home. Toyah doesn't want a beer and doesn't want to watch a film. All she wants is to go to bed...

... which brings us back to Sally's kitchen again. The dishes are washed and dried, and Kevin and Sally stare into each other's eyes, eventually sharing a passionate kiss. (Romance is not dead after all!!)

Sunday 25 August

Tonight's episode is reported in two halves! One half by myself and the other half by my wife!

Sally wakes to hear Rosie calling at breakfast. She comes down and is surprised that Kevin is making breakfast for her. He pretends to Sally (for Rosie's benefit) that he has put the sofa bed away.

Richard and Gail argue about his financial problems. Gail suggests that her mother maybe able to help. However Richard is too proud to accept any help. He wants to get out of the situation himself.

Shelley is cleaning outside the Rovers. Peter comes by and offers to help. She refuses. Eileen observing this says afterwards to Shelley that she feels sorry for Peter. Shelley says she wants nothing to do with him.

Fizz suggests to redecorate. Toyah not bothered, and besides it is too time consuming.

Vera thinks that the Peacock's house name is a good idea and suggests to Tyrone that they name their house.

Richard rings up the caterers for his wedding asking whether they would defer payment for a month for his bill. They refuse.

Curly asks Steve about him not buying one of Richard's flats. Steve explains it is because of the bail hostel. Curly says that it has to go somewhere.

Sally confides in Eileen that Kevin slept with her last night. She thinks it will complicate things. It may give Kevin the wrong impression.

Ken tells Shelley that Peter is heartbroken. Shelley put her point of view to him. She says he deserves to be upset, and she is determined that it will not happen again.

Vera has a name plate made for the house. She gets Kirk and Tyrone to put it up (crooked!). It is called "The Old Rectory".

Sandy, the newspaper editor, calls round to Ken. It seems Hermione (real name in the series Doris), has had a stroke, and it is seems that she will not be able to work again for ages. Kevin agrees to continue as Hermione after persuasion from Deirdre and Sandy. Sandy agrees that he can drop his regular column.

Peter is watching a movie when Shelley arrives round. He immediately invites her in. She asks why he didn't he didn't believe her about Ciaran? He says that he always thought she would leave him one day, and he begs her for another chance. She says she will think about it.

Ashley tells Maxine and her mother about the name plate outside Vera Duckworth's. He can hardly control his laughter. They don't find it so amusing.

Sally asks Rosie to keep an eye on Sophie while she washes her hair. It is an excuse to get her away so that she can say to Kevin that last night shouldn't have happened. He says he completely understands and that he will do things her way.

Toyah goes back to Fizz's suggestion about redecorating the flat. She says they could organise a decorating party, where each person helps.

Gail says that Richard is shutting her out and she wants to help, by asking her mother for a loan. Richard says it is not enough, her money is tied up in investments and the house.

Maxine's mother Doreen has a go at Vera over the house name. Vera says she has no right to call theirs 'Balmoral'.

Gail tells Richard that she wants to remortgage the house. He finally agrees, but tells her to tell nobody, especially not her mother. Otherwise people will loose confidence in him.

Finally, a possible spoiler for UK residents as well as those of you from overseas.

It seems Maria will return from Canada - to take over the running of the Rovers!

Monday 26 August

Wednesday 28 August

Due to various circumstances, this up-date is offered by me, who is relying on a fading memory...

Breakfast at Gail's, where Richard is still confident of his financial expertise, and tutors Gail how to talk to the Bank Manager about re-mortgaging her (their?) house. Audrey arrives, and wonders why Gail is looking so 'tickety-boo'. Gail tells her Mum that she's off to a conference [accent on the con, perhaps?] and Audrey departs, happy.

Peter's flat, where Shelley and he have yet another heart-to-heart talk. Peter has bought her a set of earrings (they'd never be seen!) but Shelley wants their relationship to be based on trust, not baubles.

In the street, someone has defaced Vera's house sign. No longer is it 'The Old Rectory', but it's now 'The Old Wreck', and Vera confronts Doreen, who denies being involved in this act of vandalism and storms off ... ... to oversee a sign-writer altering the Peacock's 'Immoral' sign to the original 'Balmoral'.

Richard meets the bank manager, and is not at all pleased with what he hears. Richard is in big trouble, but he remains confident when he returns home to Gail...

... who has managed to talk her bank manager into allowing her to re-mortgage her house.

Les meets the awful Kirk on the street, and advises this spotty youth that, contrary to medical opinion, Les is like a man half his age. Why? All down to fags and booze!

Sally has been at the Job Centre and she's found a job. Sally is happy. Kevin is happy. Two wages coming in. Sally starts filling in the application form, just as Rosie appears. Rosie is appalled that her Mum is maybe going to be a dinner lady at Weatherfield Comp, and goes off in a teenage tantrum, leaving Sally and Kevin to wonder about kids... (Me too!!)

At the factory, Mike does a deal for a big order with Dev's very suave cousin, but Joe has some misgivings... (Me too!!)

Chez Gail again, and Richard is doing his sums on his calculator. He is not a happy man, and resorts to the whisky bottle for solace. Gail asks him if he has any worries (just a few, Gail!!) but he assures Gail that 'all will be well'....

Friday 30 August

Early morning on the street and Karen is boasting to Fiz and Janice about her up-market job at Elevation, where she rubs shoulders with the cream of society, like footballers, actors and other celebrities. Fiz asks Karen if she can get autographs, but that would breach customer confidentiality; very infra-dig! The girls go to work and Steve wonders what Karen is playing at - she's moved on, she tells him haughtily. (Pride comes..., Karen!!)

Chez Gail, and the post has arrived with a reminder bill for Richard for the wedding reception. Oh yes, he has put by the money to pay it. (Oh no, he hasn't.)

At Sally's, where little Rosie [once all sweetness and light] is being bitchy about her broken arm (she fell on the Red Rec, apparently) and the fact that her Mum may be a dinner lady at her new school. Little Rosie is fast becoming a little brat.

Vera has had her house sign re-painted to its original state. Les passes and opines that it lowers the tone. (Now, what else could lower the tone of the street, I wonder?) Doreen passes, and doesn't deign to cross swords with Vera.

Richard calls at the garage and asks Kevin how much a car like his would be worth - he has a friend who has one just like his. (He has a friend?) Kevin quotes him a figure of about 12,000 pounds, and Richard seems pleased with this information.

Karen at work at Elevation, and Chloe, a colleague, points out a customer in Karen's patch eating a burger. Karen marches up and orders Mr Scruffy Burger to get rid of the offensive article, or get out, just as Jay, the manager, appears and greets Giles Alexander warmly. Jay explains to a confused Karen that Giles is a famous record producer who spends a fortune in the store and he makes it clear to the hapless Karen that silly rules don't apply to him, or people like him. He also points out that people with real money tend to be scruffy, and Karen had better learn to recognise the signs, or else! Did Chloe know who he was? Of course she did... (I nearly typed 'Poor Karen' there - oops.)

Steve tells Les to get his cab fixed - the left indicator isn't working - gives him 20 pounds. (Are bulbs that expensive?)

In the Kabin, Sally complains to Rita about Rosie's bad moods and her hopes for a job at the school. Peter arrives and wants a small-ad put in the window. He leaves. It's for a part-time assistant at the bookies - that would suit Sal!!

Blanche gets out of Les' cab and pays her fare. She includes a tip - for a horse. Les goes to ask Tyrone to fix his indicator, and offers him a radio (yes, the duff one which is going the rounds) in exchange. Tyrone agrees, watched by the hawk-eyed Blanche.

In the Rovers, Peter and Sally discuss the job. If she calls in tomorrow, they can talk about the details. Karen arrives for lunch, and loses no time in regaling the regulars about all the smart people she meets - she can sniff out those with real money, don't cha know! - and Jay is going to introduce her to more of these chic types. (Naturally, Jay drives a posh Porsche.)

The Peacock home, and Maxine has discovered the identity of the phantom sign-writer. It's Ashley! (She found the paint and the brush.) Ashley will now have to "buy" her silence. [What can she mean?]

Richard arrives home, despondent. Someone has nicked his car in town. (Oh yeh?)

In the Rovers, Kevin enters and chases Tyrone back to work, for there's so much to do. Blanche informs Kevin about Tyrone's free jobs at the garage, and Kevin hurries off...

Gail's again, where David wonders out loud how anyone could have stolen Richard's car, with its fancy immobiliser and alarm system. Does no one believe him? (No, we don't, since he asks!) Were the police informed? Of course. (Another porky?) Sarah asks if he'll get a courtesy car in the meantime? Well, apparently not, for his insurance wouldn't run to that. Richard shouts at David and Sarah for thinking that he's been stupid. Gail assures him that he's not stupid, and Richard storms off to the pub. (Will his car ever be found, we wonder?)

At the garage, Kevin is giving Tyrone a talking-to about his wee job for Les, just as Rosie and her pal Selena appear. Kevin immediately switches on a grin and goes into 'The Good Dad' mode. Rosie want to know what her Dad wants for his imminent birthday, but he wants a surprise. Rosie and Selena go off to make tea for the workers.

The Rovers, and Richard is drowning his sorrows. Gail enters and persuades him that it's not his fault that his car's been pinched. (Oh, yes, it is, Gail!!) They go off home together. (Oh well, why be miserable in the pub, Richard, when you can be miserable at home?)

Rosie and Selena bring the tea for the workers at the garage, just as Sally (smiling!!) arrives to tell of her promised job at the bookies. Kevin doesn't seem overjoyed. (No change there, then.) Tyrone offers Kevin a little gift for his birthday, which looks very suspiciously like a radio...

Chez Gail and Richard. (OK - they're now married, so it's now the two of them. I give in!) Richard and Gail have a glass of wine, and Richard looks back over the previous few months and the many disasters he's had. (Of course, he does miss out a couple of them!) His voice falters, and he starts to tell Gail that she has no idea what kind of a man she's married to. (Is Richard going to confess all??) Gail interrupts his talk, to tell him that she DOES understand - he's come into her life and she now knows what it is to love, and be loved, again. She trusts him, and will stand by him, whatever happens. They share a tender kiss, and Richard thanks her for her faith in him - "more than I can tell you!"...
