Sunday 1 September

A good evening/morning/afternoon to you all. Depending on which part of the world you are reading this and the time of day!!

(I confess to missing the first couple of minutes of the programme tonight). What I can ascertain Kevin was wishing Sally good luck for her job at the bookies.

Janice and Fizz meet Karen who is on her way to work. They ask her who maybe coming into the store. She says probably film stars, models, actors ....

Richard receives a call that someone wishes to buy one of his flats. However they are only offering 50,000, which he considers is far too low.

Audrey meets Richard and tells him that she heard that he had his car stolen. She is sorry he is having a run of bad luck. She suggests that he might have a word with Emma to move things along. He says that he is sure the police are doing their best.

Rosie (or it could be Sophie - she like Jason and Todd are interchangeable!) comes round to see David and says she is not looking forward to starting school next week.

Karen has an argument with Chloe, her colleague at the store. Jay comes by and intervenes and takes Chloe side.

Sally starts work at the bookies. Peter is pleased that she gave Blanche a lot of attention.

Kevin talks to Rosie and realises something is wrong. She says she doesn't want to go to her new school. She has heard stories about kids having their heads put down the loo. Kevin assures her that these rumours were going around 25 years ago when he started school and it didn't happen.

Kevin mentions to Vera about her birthday next week. She says she will be luck to get a card from "our Terry". She will probably get a box of chocolates from Jack. However she would like a new radio as their one is all crackly.

Mike asks Joe to make sure that the order is ready for Monday. He would hate to let down a friend. Joe is obviously annoyed.

Fizz gets a text message (or should that be 'txt msg'!) on her mobile. They have someone from (boy-band) Westlife in the store.

Mike sees Peter talking to Sally about a job. He says that he would never give her a job again. She explains to Peter that Danny persuaded her to take a copy of Mike's database list of clients when she left Baldwins. Peter likes her initiative and takes her on. He thanks Mike for the reference!

Fizz sends a text message back to Karen. Jay sees her using her mobile in the store and tells her that she shouldn't use it during working hours. Karen says she is only using while the store is empty. He asks her how she knows nobody is about to come in. He tells her to go to the store room and do some packing.

Sally comes home to Kevin and Sophie/Rosie and tells them she has the job. Sally tells Kev that they can now make plans for a holiday.

Sunita gets a phone call, in the shop, for Dev. He tells her to tell the woman who is calling that he is out. She does so reluctantly after arguing about it with Dev.

Audrey sees Gail and says that she saw Richard. She commiserates about his bad luck.

Kevin comes into the Rovers all dressed up. Martin asks why and he says that he and Sally are going out for dinner.

Kevin then gives Tyrone the radio back that seems to be doing the rounds of the Street. Kevin says he already has a radio. He tells Tyrone that he knows someone who would want it.

Martin offers to pay Gail some money towards David's secondary school expenses, ie football kit. Gail says that it is not necessary.

Karen turns up at the Rovers. She tells Janice and Fizz that she wasn't lying about he pop star in the store. She says she had to "test" the bed with him, as he wanted to know what it felt like with two people inside it.

Karen tells the Janice and Fizz that she Jay and Chloe who are her new friends are going to 'The Attic' (nightclub) on Monday.

Richard tells Gail that he has sold a flat for 65,000. She tells him that Martin helped to pay towards David's expenses. He is pleased when she says that she refused.

Sally and Kevin return home happy and slightly drunk. She said it was a good decision him moving in.

Sunita tells Gina that Dev has two women in his life. Gina thinks she is jealous. She says she doesn't like him that much.

Sally and Kevin recall the old days with Hilda Ogden. How he used to have sleep on the sofa, because Hilda wouldn't want an "hanky panky" going on. He says he has come round the full circle. They kiss passionately. He suggests they go up to bed. Sally says as long as they return to being just friends in the morning. Kevin loses his temper and doesn't understand her moods. He was hoping it would be forever.

Ok. There we go. More tomorrow from Gareth.

INTERVAL

Back at number 8, David says hello to Richard and then he tells Gail he has folded up his shirt and tie and put his blazer in the wardrobe and Gail asks if he is going to tell them how he got on but David tells them there is nothing much to tell and if they want him he will be playing football as he wants to get in the team. Richard then tells Gail he is cool and Gail tells him that is his style, Richard then tells her that the show flat is all right so they will be getting some money 65,000 and Gail says that is good but Richard tells her the flats should be worth double that.

Back at Elevations, Karen goes up to Jay and tells him she has been thinking about what he said and the trouble is he does not like her because she stands up for herself and Jay asks why does she have to see everything in terms of a fight and Karen tells him because he makes her feel out of place and he has been so snobby since she arrived here. Karen tells him there are no snobs at the factory and they all go to the pub together so Jay tells her to go back there then and Karen tells him she will be so glad to get out of this place.

That is how the episode Finished.

Friday 6 September

Chez Toyah and Fiz, where Toyah is getting worried about her Visual Art project not being ready (nor started) for college and Fiz offers to be a model. Toyah declines her kind offer. However, they agree on one thing - a flat-painting party will go ahead.

At Underworld, Mike is putting a brave face on Naveem's bounced cheque, and he tells Joe that all businesses have cash-flow problems now and again. The girls are not putting on a brave face about their non-existent bonus, however.

In the Corner Shop, Dev's nightly womanising is taking its toll, and he complains to Sunita of insomnia. (Too much bed, not enough sleep!) Phone rings, and Dev doesn't want to speak to anyone, so Sunita tells Mike that he isn't in. Dev would have spoken to Mike, he says. (We believe you, Dev.)

The Macdonald's' flat, where Karen is preparing for a hard day avoiding work, or even looking for work. She's going to be choosy about what job she accepts, and asks Steve for some money. A ten pound note changes hands, and Steve goes off, unhappily, to work.

Back at Underworld, and Joe has just fixed Fiz's machine. Janice remarks that she could do with 'a good servicing' as well as her machine, but Joe declines her kind offer. In the office, Mike is preparing to meet someone for lunch to discuss his possible purchase of some holiday flats in Spain. Dev, he says, is seeing to the slight problem of the rubber cheque. (Oh no, he's not!)

Sunita has received an invitation to a wedding, but can't go on her own - the invitation states 'Sunita and partner'. (Form an orderly queue, behind me!) Dev has a slightly different problem - his private life is so busy - so he's off to bed for a few hours, and cannot be reached, by anyone.

Underworld, and Joe phones the bank, only to be informed that Naveem's second cheque has bounced as well. (Ah well, as one door closes, another slams in your face, Joe.)

In the Rovers, where Fiz is inviting Kirk and Jason to a party at their flat, where there's going to be lots of stripping. The lads seem interested, until they learn that it'll be wallpaper stripping. Audrey passes, catches the word 'party' and jumps to the right conclusion. Joe arrives and is reminded by Geena that it's her night off. (Joe smiles!) Janice tells the jobless Karen that they're looking for two machinists at the factory, but Karen is in no hurry to find work. [Karen watches her husband speaking to Joe and she jumps to the wrong conclusion.] Joe is telling Steve about Dev's cousin and the bouncing cheques and, yes, he'll have to do something about it, but what, he wonders... (We wonder, too.)

A stranger arrives in the pub and strikes up a conversation with Norris, just as a solemn Fred bemoans the fact that a good friend, Arthur Cobb, has just passed away when he was out at the pub. The stranger asks Fred if Arthur was going into or coming out of the pub, and is sad to learn that it was going in. Norris discovers that the stranger's name is Harry Flack and that he is an expert on hygiene. Harry complains that his glass is dirty, and Fred tells Shelley to give him another pint. Harry reckons that the old saw "cleanliness is next to Godliness" should be the other way around.

In the Corner Shop, Joe asks where Dev is and demands the phone numbers of his other six shops, for he needs to speak to him urgently.

Back in the Rovers, and Harry has just been to the toilets and doesn't like what he has seen - no soap, no towel and the place is filthy. Even Les agrees. And Norris. Harry introduces himself as a 'cleanliness consultant' who has worked in the VIP facility at the airport, where he met the cream of society, like film stars, royalty and even footballers. Norris is impressed and just happens to mention his contribution to the Commonwealth Games recently. (At this point, I lost the will to stay conscious.)

The Macdonald's' flat and Karen and Steve have a quiet discussion (I lie!) about Karen's plans to find a job. Steve patiently (oops, another porky!) explains to his wife that he wasn't begging Joe to employ her again. Karen will get a job when she's good and ready.

Back in the Rovers, and Harry runs his finger along the bar, revealing some dreaded dust, which, of course, must contain bacteria. Les claims to have suffered a bout of bacteria once. (No, Les IS bacteria!) Fred offers Harry, the self-confessed perfectionist in hygiene, all the ale he can drink, plus a ten-pound note, if he'll clean the toilets. Harry accepts, but says that he'll have to go home first, and does his impression of General Douglas MacArthur - "... I shall return!" [I know that's not the full quotation - that's why the ... are there.] Harry leaves, and Fred is certain that he's seen the last of this troublemaker.

Joe continues to try to contact Dev, but without success.

Les appears at Toyah's flat, helped by a sweaty Fiz, with his favourite chair - it's a gift. Toyah accepts his offering, somewhat reluctantly. Anyway, Les has no room for his chair, now that he has Eileen's sofa.

Joe closes the factory and spies the elusive [and rested?] Dev on his way into his shop, where he takes some cash from the till for this evening's amorous encounter. Joe loses no time in informing Dev that his cousin's second cheque has bounced, and he accuses Naveen of being a thief, but Dev will only discuss business with Mike, and goes off in a taxi.

The girls' flat, and Toyah looks with disgust at Les' chair, replete with stains and burns - and its own distinct stink. How can she consign it to the local tip without offending Les?

Joe is back in the factory when Mike returns, none too pleased at what he's heard from Dev about Joe's having called him a thief. However, Mike's mood changes when he hears that Naveem's second cheque has bounced and Joe tells him that the word is that Naveem's business is going bust. We leave Mike a very worried man...

Sunday 8 September

Before I give you tonight's report, let me tell you that ITV in their wisdom have scheduled two episodes on a Monday night. According to my tv magazine this may become a regular feature.

Looking at it from our point of view this means more reports, from a UK viewer it will mean more to watch (now 5 episodes a week), and from those of you reading this overseas, unless your tv companies increase the scheduling you will get even further behind us!

Ho, hum on with tonight's programme.

Mike is on the phone to a client. The client has heard a rumour that there is a problem at Underworld. Mike assures him everything is ok.

Joe comes in and says that he has been round to Naveen's warehouse and everything there seem to be quiet. It is all locked up. This seems strange because if he was in trouble, they think he would be working all hours to try and make ends meet.

Karen has "borrowed" Steve's wallet while he is asleep. She has decided it take it for a walk!

Karen and Janice are going to bingo and invite Sunita. She turns her nose up at the thought, saying that she maybe desperate to go out ....but not that desperate.

Fred is cleaning the windows of the Rovers. He asks Shelley to do the toilets. Shelley asks about the other guy, to which Fred says he was all talk. She says she will not do it without extra money.

Steve gets up and he can't find his wallet. Karen suggests it maybe in the kitchen. To his surprise it is there. He tells Karen that he is not lending her any money until she gets herself a job. He will then sub her until her first pay check comes through. He gives her 20 to last the week, to buy necessary items.

Karen tells Sunita that Joe and her were going out and he called it off at the last minute.

Sunita tells Shelley that she has an invite to a wedding for herself and a partner, but she doesn't have anybody to go with. As Joe comes into the shop, she jokingly asks him. Shelley tells Sunita that he is already in trouble with Gina.

Joe asks Sunita if Dev is in. Sunita says she doesn't know where he is. Joe is not pleased.

Fizz is in the flat reading out the problem page from a magazine. Toyah is annoyed as she is trying to work. As soon as Fizz leaves the room, Toyah picks up the magazine, and Fizz puts her head round the door and catches her.

Mike and Joe go round to Dev's house to confront him about his cousin. They tell him that Naveen is going bust. Mike says he could sue, and Dev would also be in trouble as he gave them an assurance that he was ok.

Gina is on her way back to the bar after going to clean in the gents toilet. Les tells her that the beer is gassy. She doesn't want to know.

Joe turns up to the Rovers with a bunch of flowers for Gina. She feels she could be persuaded to go out with him again.

Harry arrives in the Rovers with a trolley full of cleaning kit. Much to the relief of Shelley.

Dev asks Sunita to tell callers that he is not in. She is fed up with it, and refuses to do it. They have an argument and she resigns. Dev calls her back and tries to apologise. He says he has a lot of problems at the moment. They calm down.

Harry is taking a long time cleaning the toilets. Fred wonders what is happening, because his customers need to use them. Harry says there is a problem in one of the gents toilets. Fred asks Shelley to get a plumber in. She says it will cost an 'arm and a leg', but Harry says he can fix it.

Les is at Toyah and Fizz's flat. They are eating a takeaway for dinner, out of its carton.

Gina comes in while Fred is chatting to Harry to note there are flowers in the ladies toilet. They are all very pleased, and Fred offers him a full time job.

Sunita is surprised that Dev didn't know Naveen is in trouble, as they are relatives.

Naveen rings Dev on his mobile. Dev arranges a meeting.

Sunita asks Janice if they are still going to bingo. She confirms they are. Steve tells Karen that she can't afford to go. Janice offers to buy her a card or two, inasmuchas she feels a bit guilty over her job loss.

Mike gets a call from another supplier, who also wonders if Underworld is going broke. Mike assures him all is ok. Mike and Joe are concerned that some clients who Mike has been doing business with for years are getting worried.

Dev comes in and tells Mike and Joe that they will have their money by the end of the week. Joe threatens him , but Mike tries to bring peace.

Vera then comes in and tells Doreen she could not help noticing that she had taken her nameplate down so she wants an apology and Doreen tells her she will have a long wait but Ashley confesses it was him that defaced it and Doreen is mortified.

Back at number 8, Richard tells David he was looking at some cars as they need something and Richard asks if he is all right and David tells him he is but he is trying to watch the television and then the phone rings and Richard gets quite annoyed and he puts it down and David asks what it was about and Richard tells him he thought he was watching the television.

Back in the Rovers, Joe tells Geena that the girls will be getting there bonuses soon and then his phone rings and Joe tells her he will be back by 10 to pick her up and Geena asks where he is going and he tells her a little earning. Emma then comes in and orders drinks.

Back at Underworld, Dev tells Mike he is embarrassed about what has happened and Mike tells him he is owed a lot of money and Dev tells him he has been through his books and it is bad but not that bad and just to give hi m 24 more hours and it will be fixed and Mike is surprised when Dev says he will pay the debt personally if he does not come up with the money.

At number 7, Sunita tells Ben that he is a good listener and she tells him she has been invited to a wedding and also that Dev is very nice but he is too wrapped up in his own business and then she tells him he looks tired and puts him to bed.

At Naveen's factory, Joe tells Steve the good news about how they have to break in and Steve is mortified as he has a criminal record and Joe tells him he is only getting back what belongs to Underworld as it has not been paid for, Steve tells him that he is going home as he wants nothing to do with it and Joe tells him no but Steve pushes him out the way.

Back at number 4, Doreen is telling Maxine and Ashley how it is people like Vera who bring money down on the houses in a street like this but then Ashley admits it was him who defaced the sign. Doreen is surprised. Maxine then tells her she has invited her dad to the christening and Doreen tells her if he is coming she is not but Maxine tells her it is Joshua's christening and she wants them both to be there as they both have a right to be.

Back at the factory, Joe tells Steve he is paying him to do a job but Steve tells him he does not care but then Joe takes the keys and Steve tells him to give them to him, but the police turn up so they have to hide below the van and Steve tells Joe if he goes back to prison for this he will kill him but Joe says he will not.

Friday 13 September

Audrey is opening-up the Salon and her attention is diverted to a little confrontation across the street, where Emma is confronting Kirk about his having used one of her sheets for what she calls a 'throw' for his couch. (Warm, Emma!) Fiz looks on, amused, and, after Emma's door slams, he grins back at Fiz. A worried-looking Dev drives up (Unfortunately, he doesn't knock anyone down, but we live in hope.)

Chez Hillman, where Gail is still worried about their financial problems. Richard has a cunning plan which he's going to test the viability of. Doorbell rings, and Audrey appears, to an extremely warm welcome from Richard. (He must have something nasty planned, for he smiles.)

At Underworld, Joe insists that he did the right thing in nicking the knicker order back from Naveen's warehouse, but Mike is not so sure. Joe explains that there's been no comeback, so he's in the clear. (Time will tell!) Dev arrives, to a mixed reception.

At the Peacocks', Ashley tells Doreen that Maxine and Josh have gone to see Derek about his coming to the christening. Doreen states categorically that, if he's coming, she won't be, but Ashley's charm (Yes, charm!) prevails and she hurries off to the Rovers to help Fred with the catering arrangements.

Back at the factory, Dev asks Mike why he's still employing a thief, but Mike tries diplomacy. Joe outlines the situation as he sees it - Naveen wants the merchandise, the merchandise is here, he pays cash, he gets the merchandise. Simple. Dev leaves, and Mike tells Joe that, if the cops come, he's on his own. (Will the knicker-nicker get nicked, we wonder?)

Richard is still on a charm offensive with Audrey. (She provides the charm, and he is just offensive.) While Audrey tells David about the family portrait, planned for Sunday, the sly Richard dips his hand into her handbag and steals her keys. Richard smiles broadly, again. (A cunning stunt - no Spoonerism intended!!)

Maxine arrives back from having visited her Dad and tells a gleeful Ashley that Donna has left Derek - "Donna is a goner!". They both relish the prospect of Doreen and Derek getting back together. (Translation - they both want rid of Doreen...)

In the Rovers, culinary issues are at stake. Doreen eventually persuades Fred to have stuffed vine leaves included in the catering for Josh's christening, egged-on (sorry!) by Harry Flagg, the new toilet-cleaning operative. (Toilet here is the operative word.)

On the street, and the no-good Richard is up to, well, no good; he sidles up to the Salon and puts the key in the lock, then departs. (Hiss, boo!!!!!) Karen meets Joe, and has a few well-chosen words for his getting Steve involved in a theft, just as a police car arrives at Underworld...

... and the cops talk to Mike in the factory about his dealings with Naveen Alahan, just routine of course. Joe seems surprised to learn that Naveen's warehouse has been robbed, but leaves the talking to Mike. (Very wise!)

Meanwhile, at the Hillmans', Audrey realises that she doesn't have her keys, and she goes off to retrace her steps to try to find them, accompanied by David, who finds them in the Salon door. David advises his Gran to 'be more careful'. (He's behind you Audrey!) Richard watches her confusion, and smiles again.

In the Rovers, Ashley, Maxine and little Josh arrive and go through to the back room, with Doreen and Fred, to discuss catering for the christening.

Kirk returns Emma's bedsheet to her, but she happens to notice that there are some footprints on it and she draws the right conclusion. Her door slams again in Kirk's face.

Back at Underworld, Mike tells the cops that, of course, he knows Naveen Alahan and has done business with him. His order cannot have been stolen, for it wasn't due to be delivered until Monday, and he produces paperwork [forged] to that effect. Mike points out to the cops that he is, literally, sitting on the completed order! (Joe sweats, but Mike smooth-talks his way out of trouble.)

Back in the back room of the Rovers, and Maxine tells her Mum that Donna is gone, and that her Mum and Dad should get back together...

At the bar, Joe pays Steve his 500 pounds (in a suitable brown envelope - now, where have we seen this before?) but refuses to consider giving Karen her job back.

Back room again of the Rovers, and Maxine pleads with her Mum to give her Dad another chance; after all, she and Ashley just want to see them happy. Doreen might consider talking to Derek again, if he groveled. She promises nothing more.

At the bar of the Rovers, Harry [the Flagg of convenience] has helped Betty by carrying some mixers up from the cellar. Fred is pleased. Karen extorts the brown envelope from Steve, promising not to waste a penny of it on things like debt, bills or food. Joe and Mike discuss the events of the day, Joe in awe of Mike's dealings with the cops. Mike makes it clear to Joe that he'll have to buck up his ideas.

Chez Hillman, and Gail quizzes Richard again about his business plan and the viability test he mentioned earlier. (Smug smile from Richard.) "Wheels are in motion", he says to a gullible Gail, and adds, "Where there's a will, there's a way!"

Sunday 15 September

A very good evening to you all ... or is afternoon where you are - but then you may not be reading this until sometime after I wrote the report, in which case ... merry Christmas!!

At the Peacocks it is the day of the christening. Everyone is getting anxious. Ashley is complaining that Doreen has been in the bathroom for too long. She comes down, to Ashley's relief, but only to ask Maxine if she can borrow some of her cream. Then returns to the bathroom.

Sarah tells Aide and Candice that she can't come out because they are having a family portrait taken. She hopes to join them later. (Where have they been for the last few months?).

Richard put downs the phone and announces that the photographer is going to be about half an hour late because of a flat tyre. Richard says that the photographs will take about a couple of hours. Sarah is very unhappy at that thought.

Maxine tells Ashley to keep out of her parents squabbling. Doreen, who has reappeared from the bathroom, says the will sit next to her husband so that the baby's grandparents can be seen together.

Mike walks into the factory to find Joe in there. He thinks it is strange that he should be there on a Sunday. Mike asks why he is there. Joe says he is tidying things up. He is on tenterhooks because Mike hasn't said whether he is going to keep him on or sack him. He assures Mike that he won't ever do anything similar again.

The guests are assembling for the christening. Ashley introduces his step-mum.

Just before the photographer arrives Audrey checks with Richard that he and Gail are still happily married. It seems once before they were going to have a family portrait done, Gail and Martin were falling out.

Ashley's step-mum says she is really pleased to be invited to the christening, and that she loves him as if he were her own.

Maxine takes photos of her guests, including her mum and dad who are chatting away.

Richard manages to steal Audrey's keys from her handbag again. He then pretends that he has some forms to drop off to a client immediately. Audrey arranges for photos to be taken of individual members of the family until Richard gets back.

Joe goes to Dev's shop. He tells Dev that nothing happened when the police came. Dev denies calling the police. Joe says that he was retrieving goods that belonged to his boss. Dev says he was sorting it all out until the robbery took place.

At the christening the priest does the prayers bit! Dev sees Mike in the Rovers, and tells him that he didn't call the police. Mike says he was worried about the money. Dev says it would have been sorted. Now Mike has lost a buyer, and has lot of unwanted goods.

Gail is worried that Richard has been gone a long time.

Fred has opened a savings account for baby Joshua.

Maxine notes that Doreen and Derek are chatting away, and they have been doing so for about 45 minutes. Then suddenly they start rowing. Doreen confesses to Maxine that they haven't got on together since the mid-70's. Ashley steps in and says that this is his son's big day and he didn't want anyone to spoil it.

Sunita tells Dev that if he has problems he can talk to her if he wants. She suggests shutting the shop for 30 minutes so they can both go for a drink.

Doreen apologizes to Ashley for the row. She claims Derek is obstinant and that she is going to put it all in the hands of her solicitor.

Ashley is now convinced that Joshua is his.

Richard arrives back just in time for the family portrait.

Dev tells Sunita that he is not going to give her details of what went wrong.

Joe tells Mike that everything is alright. Mike says he has a warehouse full of Ladies Knickers, and suggest that Joe puts on his thinking cap to sort out how to get rid the knickers.

Sunita and Dev continue drinking together in the corner shop. Sunita mentions about the wedding she is going to, with a partner. Dev offers to go as an escort.

Audrey leaves Gail and Richard's and finds her key in her bag. Richard then takes from his pocket a set of duplicate keys. (Where does he get them cut on A Sunday??).

Over at another table Doreen tells Ashley that she will need a good divorce lawyer and Ashley tells he does not know any but Fred or Mike will. Maine tells her to watch out but Ashley tells her she does not want to wait for Derek.

In the back room, Geena tells Joe that Dev can only get to him like this because he keeps things from her and if he did not he would not have any hold over her or Joe which is what he gets off on and Geena tells Joe that it would be better if she heard things from the horses mouth. Joe then asks what if she did not like what she heard and Geena tells him that would be the end of them then.

Back at Toyah's art exhibition, Matt Row the reporter asks Les for a picture in the chair and then he gets the councilor and stars taking some notes for making a story. Les gets up set when Nays moth starts saying he is a lay about and when Toyah tells him the same he gets even more upset.

Back in the Rovers, Les tells Toyah she made a laughingstock out of him but Toyah tells him it was the art world she was laughing at, Les then tells her he gas been used and he does not know how she can look him in the eye. Geena is talking to Joe when Dev walks in and Deirdre and Sunita and Geena all tell him to leave it, but then Joe punches him and tables go flying and then they go outside and start it on the street and set off Ken's car alarm and then Joe leaves Dev lying on the cobbles and Geena tells him he will never change and walks off.

That is how the episode finished.

Wednesday 18 September

A guest reviewer this week -

The programme opens in Dev's sitting room - it's 5am and Sunita is fussing round Dev who has cuts and bruises and some bandaging on his arm. They've had a long wait at the hospital following his scrap with Joe Carter. All Dev wants is a brandy and some peace and quiet.

Meanwhile over at Roy's Rolls he's opening the post and is not amused to read that an application has been made to the Council to open an amusement arcade next door in what was Sally's former shop's premises, It'll be all shaved heads and tattoos he mutters.

Sarah, Aiden and her former best schoolfriend (Bethany's Godmother) meet in the Street on the way to school. Sarah suggests to Aiden that he come to hers to watch a video that evening and "Madame" presumes she's invited too.

Joe calls at the Rovers and wants a word with Gina. Shelley tells him that there's no point upsetting Gina and that she's finished with him. Joe apologies to Fred who says that Joe did too much talking with his fists and that he'll pay for the damage to the pub.

Over at the Kabin, Norris, Rita and Curly are reading the latest edition of the "Weatherfield Gazette" which carries a picture of Les in "Les' Chair" complete with Kirk lounging besides him. The 500 prize is mentioned. Ken says that Les won't speak to Toyah.

The girls are assembling at Underworld for another exciting day with their machines. Hayley mentions the Amusement Arcade application, Fiz thinks it'll be great. Hayley ponders that it's another form of gambling which brings forth yobs and fighting. The talk is of the punch up between Joe and Dev, some think that Joe will be back in the dole queue quite soon.

Gina's got the day off. Vera reminisces about when two lads fought over her.......... Someone at the Rovers comments that Kirk and Les are smiling like lunatics in the picture in the paper and that the description of layabouts is apt.

Gina arrives at Dev's, Sunita is still in full mother hen mode and asks him to eat the sandwiches and says he looks better for a rest. Dev says to Gina that it looks worse than it is and that they were not fighting by his rules. He suggests to Sunita that she should go home and catch up on her sleep, no need to work in the shop, Deirdre can cope. Sunita leaves saying she'll call Dev later. He says to Gina "Where do you want me to start".

Mike Baldwin arrives back at Underworld and asks the girls if they've been behaving themselves in his absence. They say they have and that that's more than some people.... By now Mike has reached the office where a microscopically injured Joe is lollying about. "Fill me in Joe" demands Mike Baldwin. Joe says that he's quoted Harvey Reuben for an order "on the high side" which at least means they've room to maneuver downwards.

I N T E R V A L

The second half starts with Vik in his minicab picking up an (unknown) fare. Vik recognizes the guy as Mickey the jockey, whom he saw recently at Haydock and won 20 as a result of the horse Mickey was riding. Mickey's off to visit his Mum in Loughborough Avenue.

In the shop Deirdre is asking Sunita how she is and how Dev is. Sunita mutters that someone had to look after him and now Gina Kennedy's turned up. Deirdre remarks that Dev is obviously still fond of Gina and probably she is of him. She asks Sunita if she's jealous - "no, just tired I want to crash out and forget it all".

Mickey tries to get Vik to waive the 7.40 fare if he's given a racing tip. Mickey pays up and then tells Vik about a horse in the 3.30 that day.

Joe and Mike talk business. Joe admits he had a showdown with Dev, who was shouting his mouth off, told Gina, and tried to prise them apart, things got plenty physical and we had a fight - I won says Joe. Mike wonders if he's made a mistake hiring Joe.

Gina and Dev are arguing like old times. Wot gives you the right? It's not all Joe's fault. You needled him. How can you be so stupid?

Back in the shop we find Deirdre and Kirk. Vik saunters in. Deirdre admits that the TV in the shop is as a result of Dev buying a big new one. Racing is on. Vik asks to watch and his tip "Tricky Sam" wins but he hadn't put any money on it.

Mike and Joe are still discussing events. Mike wants to know where Dev is and what Joe has done to him. This is all about Gina Joe declares. So, Mike wants to know, why does my business have to suffer. You're A good manager Joe except when you keep your brains in your trousers. Joe rounds on Mike and says "You told Dev I'd done time. You should have kept your mouth shut. He's had it in for me since day one". Mike concedes "Maybe I should".

Toyah's happy. She's got top marks. Fiz wonders whether she should go in for this college lark. Toyah announces they should go for a drink.

In the cafe, Martin and Curly are huddled together. Martin mutters that the Council closes the crche and now they're lobbing out 500 for "art". Norris says the description "layabout" is incorrect and it should be "sitabout". Les is not amused and says he's got feelings. Vera takes up the trail about the Amusement Arcade and says that's how her Terry got into bad ways. Ken is also present. There's talk of a petition and Roy says he'll organise it. After that he'll have to see.

Toyah has arrived at the Rovers with Fiz and goes straight up to Les and offers to buy him a drink. He says he's not drinking with her, she let him down and now everyone's calling him a layabout. She tries to explain about having a laugh about conceptual art. Les is not amused. She offers to split the 500 with Les. He says no, it would choke him, that's dirty money. Kirk is amazed that Les is throwing away the chance of 250. (So are we all!).

Back in Dev's flat he and Gina are still talking things over. He tells Gina that Joe's poison and that he had an instinct about him on day one. He asks Gina if she wants to wait until Joe beats her up. She retorts "I make my own decisions". Dev reminds her that Joe can go back to jail and that he's in for a nasty surprise.

Mike invites Joe for a drink in the Rovers. They are still at Underworld when the police arrive and ask Mike if he's Joe, he points them in the right direction. The police caution Joe and say he's under arrest for assault.

Fade out.

Friday 20 September

Les breezes into the cafe to tell Peter that his taxi awaits to take him to the station; Peter's off to a submariners' reunion. Roy is still not amused by the planned amusement arcade across the road in Sally's old shop. Les has received a letter from the Council and they want him to contact them immediately. Kirk thinks (!) it may be to invite Les to unveil his chair. Les wishes he hadn't refused to share the prize money with Toyah. Peter leaves in Les' taxi for the station...

David is off to school, and Gail wonders if he's alright for he seems very quiet. (Enjoy it while you can, Gail!) Geena tells Shelley that she's sick of men fighting and Shelley informs her that men need that sort of thing to boost their flagging self-confidence. (Touch of sexism here, Shelley?)

In Underworld, Joe arrives and orders everyone to start work. ("Or else ye'll get thumped!" remarks Fiz) In the office, Mike and Joe discuss the rights and wrongs of the fracas - who threw the first punch? Joe cannot seem to remember...

Chez Watts, and Roy arrives to lobby his councilor, only to find that Richard is there lobbying away against the planned Bail Hostel, which Roy sees as a good idea as such hostels contribute to a great reduction in recidivism. (However, Roy is a NIMBY - not in my back yard!)

In the Corner Shop, Mike is appealing to Dev to drop the charges, and tells Dev that he's got Joe's future in his hands. Dev doesn't see Joe's future as very bright!

In the Rovers, Geena is concerned about Dev, but Sunita assures her that he's coping. Two cops arrive to speak to Geena about the alleged incident, and they go off to the back room.

Kirk tells Fiz about Les' losing out on the 250 pounds, and Fiz explains it by reference to 'double bind', a situation she learned from her Social Workers. [conflicting cues are given, so that any choice of behaviour will be wrong] (OK!! I looked that up...) Someone else will have to act on Les' behalf. Kirk is very impressed with the brain of Fiz. Shelley is missing Peter.

In the back room, the cops eventually prise the information from Geena that it was Mr Carter who delivered the first blow. The cops are grateful, for the other witnesses seem to be suffering from collective vision impediment. (A case of Foot in Mouth disease, eh?)

In the bar of the Rovers, Les shows his letter to Curly, and it's from the Housing Department - Curly will enquire into it. (Not an unveiling, then?) Joe finds out from Geena that she has told the cops that it was he who threw the first punch; he sees the prospect of prison as inevitable.

In the cafe, Kirk's plan to secure Les the cash is hatched. He explains to Janice and Toyah that Les is sick [unspecified illness] and he's saving for private treatment. Roy still wonders about the planned amusement arcade and Hayley points out to him that there's not much for youngsters to do in the area - maybe the arcade would be a good idea? Roy thanks her for their meaningful exchange of ideas on social issues. Hayley looks suitably bemused...

In the Rovers, Geena is confused - does she care more for Dev or Joe? (Do we care??)

The Hillman abode, and David arrives home from school with a huge black eye, which he blames on the football...

Geena visits Joe at the factory for a word. (Betrayal, perhaps?) Joe reckons the cops have all the evidence they need, thanks to Geena. What can she do, she asks tearfully...

David and Dev come face to bruised face in the Street and exchange silent stares. No words are necessary. Sarah manages to get the truth out of David about his bruised eye - he got it from the big brother of a boy he was having a go at in his class. (School days are the ha.... - oh, never mind.)

The cops arrive again, and ask two passers-by [Janice and Fiz] if they saw anything in the pub. Nowt.

Geena pays Joe another visit at the factory. She doesn't want him in prison, she wants him here with her and she loves him. He loves her. All is lovey-dovey, for a change.

In the Rovers, Peter has been on the phone eight times, giving details of his horrendous train journey. Shelley reckons he's keen, but Betty thinks he's just bored.

Toyah meets Les and offers him the whole 500 pounds, although she knows he's not ill. Les is touched by Toyah's concern for him, and Toyah asks Les if he likes her. No, he loves her, and they hug and kiss. The cheque is handed over, and accepted.

Curly enters, hotfoot from the Council offices, the bearer of tidings... He tells Roy that the plans for the arcade are only outline plans, so there has been no decision yet.

He has less comforting news for Les, whose day has just got better. (Well, temporarily.) Curly tells Les that the Council has noticed that Les is sub-letting his house, against the rules of tenancy, and that he's going to be evicted. Les' smile disappears.

Sunday 22 September

Here we go with another report of the events down the Street.

However before I go any further I must give particular thanks to Gareth who has been coping with two episodes each Monday. Therefore it has meant that some reports are out of chronological order, but hopefully you will make sense of them!

If there is anybody else in the UK who feels that would like to lend a hand with the reports - please do step forward and contact me.

Okay on we go.

Gina tells Sunita that she and Joe have made up and thanks her for her help. (follow this carefully!).

Rita asks Les if it is true that the Council want to evict him from his house. He says yes, and is annoyed that it has leaked out. Kirk says that he is to blame, but Les says it is not his fault.

Gail asks Sarah if David has said anything about his black eye to her. Sarah says he told her exactly the same that he got it playing football. Richard offers to have a talk with him again.

Dev comes into the shop. He thanks Sunita for her help and says he is now feeling much better.

Roy and Hayley bend Emily's ear about the proposed amusement arcade next door. Emily offers to help in any campaign to oppose it.

Gina tells Joe that she will go to the police and change her statement regarding him making the first blow in the fight with Dev. Joe says she shouldn't because it would suspicious (still friends!).

Richard has a chat with David. Richard recalls his school days and he often wondered if he did the right thing but not standing up to bullies. He tells David if he has anything on his mind he should talk to him about them. David denies he has any problems.

Joe suggests that Gina goes to talk to Dev. When she tells him they row, and he tells her to stop helping. He wishes he had not set eyes on her. (no longer friends).

Les calls round to Curly's. Les claims it is his house, and it is up to him who lives there. He wants Curly to help. During the conversation Emma interjects to wind Les up. Curly explains to Les that he is no longer a family. The only way Kirk would be able to get onto the rent book if he and Les were to share a bedroom together.

Gail talks to Ken about David. Ken confirms that David was not picked for the football team.

Joe sees Steve and asks him to confirm that Dev started the fight. Steve says he didn't see what happened, and anyway he can't because it is his partner's cousin.

Peter help a girl to open up the florist shop (which is next door to Freshco's in case you didn't know!). Once in Peter asks for help in buying flowers for Shelley. Peter chats to her and she says that she has just split up with her boyfriend. (There is a twinkle in both their eyes).

Kirk says he will tell his mother that she will be doing his dirty washing again. Les suggests to Kirk that they should "come out".

Gina goes to Joe to apologise. He blames her for all the mess he is in. (still enemies).

Ken asks David about his black eye. David suspects his mother has been chatting with him. David walks off.

Joe apologises to a tearful Gina. She doesn't want to forgive him. He tells her that she has helped him keep going during these troubled weeks. He says that he won't let her down again. They kiss and make up (aaah). She agrees to see Dev again.

Les reads a letter to Kirk that he is sending to the Council, about him and Kirk being a couple.

Gina comes to see Dev she believes he is doing it to hurt her. He says she is far from the truth and is surprised that she can't see why he is doing it.

David comes in and Gail confronts him. Sarah has told her what really happened, she tells David that Gail and Richard had guessed anyway. David says he doesn't want any retribution. He is annoyed at Sarah for telling them.

Dev asks Gina why she wants to help Joe. She says she loves him. Dev tells her if she really loves him she will drop him.

Wednesday 25 September

Today is Fizs 18th birthday! Mind you, with a mouth as big as Fiz, you would have thought shed have told everyone on the street. Rather, she is content at looking at the cards she received. Who sent you the one with the roses? asks a curious Toyah. Clearly Fiz doesnt like her aunty, calling her soft, but at least she gave her 200 quid! Fiz doesnt receive anything from her mother, which isnt surprising, but Toyah persists that she shouldve gotten her at least a card. Shes forgotten she ever had me, retorts Fiz. Then the Fizism of the episode Im just a quiet little thing, I just fade into the background! Ya! Try telling that to Roy and Hayley! She doesnt seem fussed at all, but Toyah is preaching to her that she should be more excited about her 18th. After all, she is now legal! Maybe its Fizs moms loss for not seeing her anyways.

Roy and Hayley, the generous couple they are, sent Fiz a card for her special day, and even baked her a cake, but Toyah tells her to act surprised when she sees it. Fiz and Toyah leave for breakfast full English on the house.

Next we have cocky Mike Baldwin pull up in his flashy car, only to greet Deirdre and Ken. 2 Oclock? asks Mike, who of course doesnt have second thoughts about talking to kids about how filthy rich he is. Ken suggests he should leave his car at home, and Deirdre thinks he should use Street Cars. Course, Baldwin doesnt care what they think; he is only going to be at the school for an hour. Schools are a waste of taxpayers money! mentions Mike, almost as an aside. Isnt it nice to see Mike and Ken butting heads again? Its been far too long that they havent been catty at all.

Seemingly predictable, we are shown a shot of Joe and Geena discussing their scheme to get Dev to drop the charges. Suave Joe works his charm on Geena, guessing they will only have to put on a front for two weeks at most. Geena tells her sob story that she doesnt like deceiving people, but we all know Joe has her wrapped around his finger. Youd let me go to jail right? Oh, if Geena only woke up! Geena doesnt like the prospect of looking into Devs face and lying to them, but Joe thinks it wont be a problem for her. Methinks he has lied a lot of times before! Come on itll be easy! Joe is working his charm on her so much that she is willing to do all his dirty work. Think of all the times hes lied to you. Of course, as we have been treated to before, Joe leaves her with an arrogant grin knowing his work is done.

Cut to Audrey, Richard and Gail talking about Richards stolen car. Clearly, the tension between Tricky Dick and Audrey is simmering. She insists on going with them to find it, and Gail wants to come too, much to Richs chagrin. Eventually, he gives in and starts thinking of how he can wiggle his way out of another mess. He demands that he will be doing the talking to the salesman however.

Sunita is fixing Devs breakfast for him, and of course Deirdre is jealous. Deirdre tells her to not bother with Dev, because bosses have their employees on a payroll. Deirdre thinks she would be foolish to make a play for Devendres affection, which of course she knows from experience. Deirdre clearly would like to spill the beans, but surprisingly keeps it to herself.

After break, Fiz is anxious for her cake, forget the fry up. Roy then goes on about how there is virtually only carbohydrates and fat in it, and Fiz says calories will beat seeing her mother any day.

Richard and the two ladies pull up to the car dealership. Say, if they were skimp for money, how can they be driving that posche car? What a coincidence! The car Audrey saw yesterday is now gone. Richard breathes a sigh of relief. Gail questions Audrey about the car being in the right place, and Audrey insists her eyes were not telling tales. How convenient. They should have come the night before. How does Richard always seem to get the breaks? He tells them he will talk to the salesman, and Audrey replies, Dont let him spin you a yard Richard, and as Richard turns to tell her he wont, it looked almost as if he was going to become aggressive.

Just then Steve MacDonald and Joe Carter come into the Rovers, and Joe assures Shelley he will be on his best behaviour. When Sunita brings over a drink for Dev, things become heated, as Dev suggests Steve is Joes new bodyguard. Sunita, ever the sensible one, tells him to finish his drink, and Steve tells him he should listen to her. Just then, Dev jumps up and antagonizes Joe. Unfortunately, that is all that comes of it. Dev just mentions that he wouldnt fall for a line from Geena, which makes Dev feel that he is king of the castle, and Shelley looks exhausted from the whole thing. I am getting exhausted from watching it too Shel!

Richard talks to the salesman, and he assures him he sold the car this morning. Thankfully nobody local, just someone from the other side of Manchester. Rich tells him he is interested in something smaller, a year to 18th months old. They go off to discuss possible suits. Gail and Audrey both ponder about what those two are up to.

Swing over to Sunita making Deirdre even more embarrassed, wondering if she ever fancied one of her bosses. Course Deirdre states that there were no romances, but we all know it isnt true, and it is a wonderful foreshadowing of Sunita finding out about Dev and Deirdres fling at Christmastime. Just then Shelley is serving a drink to Fiz, and jokes about her not knowing if she is of age. Fiz says she has been consuming alcohol since she smelt her mothers breath. Janice, out of the blue mentions Well shed have to have something strong after giving birth to you, upsetting Toyah, who is getting sensitive. Wasnt it just about a month ago she wouldnt even think of Fiz moving into the same flat with her?

Karen and Steve talk to Mike about him going to the school to teach. Of course Mike burns Karen, telling her she is bringing up the rear at the job center, which naturally upsets Karen. Fiz keeps going on about Kirk, and finally tells all to Toyah, who doesnt believe her at first. She wonders why Kirk isnt in the Rovers to celebrate with Fiz, who tells her she didnt tell him, and didnt want to be upset if he didnt get a card for her like her mother didnt. Awww! Is Fiz getting emotional?

Back to the Richard and Audrey saga. She insists it was the car that she saw. She storms to the salesman telling Richard she will talk to him. Richard stops her (aggressively I might add, saying the registration number was off by one number, that she just saw the wrong car, because the cars are bunched together by numbers. She thought she saw (which we all know she did), license plate V595, but instead it was V596. Audrey, the car is gone, its probably half way to Russia. The best thing we can do is forget it. Add another check mark under the squirmed his way out of another dicey situation for Richard.

After break number two, Mike is in Mr. Barlows classroom talking about the advantages of working instead of going to school. Of course loudmouth Ade asks him questions like Have you come to tell us how successful you are? and How do you measure success? Baldwin talks about his bank account and his luxury goods. He started his successful business empire by selling stuff on streets that he could get his hands on. Ade interrupts with You mean knockoffs, and Mike, agitated tells him hes wrong, people like that get behind bars.

Cut to Kirk walking past the Rovers, and Toyah catches up with him, telling him to buy a present for Fiz. He makes out that he doesnt know who she is talking about, and when he realizes she knows, she has a go at him, questioning his loyalty to Fiz, suggesting he was using her all along, because he is embarrassed to call her his girlfriend. Apparently he makes her sick.

Back to Mike teaching Kens class about work life. Candice seems to like the prospect of working at a factory all day, but Mike shoots that idea down, saying he wouldnt do that at all, thats why hes the boss! None of the girls at Underworld arrive in a Jag but him! Cant get enough of cocky Mike Baldwin! The man is a classic! He grins and tells him the car costs him a bunch, and that he pays cash. As Ken tells the class Mikes presentation is over, there seemed to be a small smattering of applause, not the glorious cheer Mikey is used to. He makes one final point that he doesnt want to see anyone lining up for a job at Underworld, because they can do better than that. Imagine if Janice, Hayley, Fiz and the crew could hear him say that to them!

Sunita persists at Deirdre, wondering out loud if she ever fancied Mike Baldwin. Deirdre is getting even more embarrassed, and walks away.

Next scene has Eileen, Steve, Vik, Les, and Vernon (havent seen him in a while), talking about Mickey Edwards, the jockey, which angers Vik, because Steve couldnt keep his gob shut about him. Les (ever the smart one) tells Vikram he isnt that soft to tell anyone about him. Vik leaves to pick up Mickey, and Les wants to know where he is picked up, and Eileen yells at him to pick up an angry customer at the Airport. Kirk wants to ask Les something, but he is in too much of a hurry to care.

Next scene has a very worried Richard talking to Gail. She mentions that he lied earlier about the car, which shocks him, and you could tell the wheels were turning in his head. Silly Richard! She was referring to the fact he didnt want to tell Audrey there was no car resembling theirs at the car dealership earlier; he just didnt want to upset her. Naturally he plays along with her, and he is content as a bunny again. If only Gail knew how much Dickey was duping her. Isnt he just so thoughtful?

Joe informs Geena she could go to the shop to talk to Dev, because Deirdre is off work. She is reluctant, because Sunita would still be working there, and he tells her to ask Deirdre when she gets off. She doesnt, but goes to the shop anyways. Hard to tell who is being more manipulative at the moment: Richard, or Joe.

Deirdre and Ken tell Mike how well he did in the classroom today, and Mike wonders how teachers arent happy, after all, its easy work. He inspired even Ade, who is talking about working toward his own venture. Mikes comment, He was probably glad he had someone talk sense, poked more fun at Ken.

Back at the flat, Fiz tells Toyah that her birthday has been brilliant, even without Kirk. Just then, he knocks on the door and tells her he bought her the present after borrowing from Les. They get sappy and hug one another for being there for each other, giving Toyah the shifty eyes. Kirk bought her perfume, which was totally what she wanted. His secret? Les told him to not buy her a deep fat fryer!

The last few minutes are devoted to Sunita and Geena in Devs shop. For some ungodly reason Geena tells Sunita her devious plan with Joe, to pretend they are split up, which angers Sunita and she says its dishonest. Geena makes out that she is the victim and Dev started it. Sounds as if she is in the second grade all over again! Course Geena goes on how they know where they stand with each other (uh huh) and how Dev is manipulative. Just then, she decides to tell Sunita about the affair Dev had with Deirdre on Christmas, and how she is probably the next on the list. Sunita, obviously distraught, doesnt want to believe it, and Geena says what do you think of your precious boss now Sunita? And that is all for this episode. Expect to hear more from Les battles with the council in the next few days, because they put him in there for a while today. Also, the storyline between Joe-Geena-Dev-Sunita just appears to have gotten started. Have a nice day

Friday 27 September

Breakfast at the Hillman home, and it's the day when the family photos will be ready for collection. Richard suggests that Audrey be invited to join them all to see them. (Such a thoughtful chap, is Richard!) Sarah needs a clean shirt, but none is to hand, and Gail suggests that she choose her cleanest dirty shirt. (Ohhh, standards are falling.)

Audrey receives a phone call at home from Gail, inviting her round to see the family photos, just as Audrey is loading the washing machine. Delighted, I'm sure...

Kirk arrives at Toyah's flat, looking for his shoes, and denies that he spent the night with Fiz. (How he got home without his shoes, I don't know.) He departs. Fiz appears, and Toyah tells her to tell Kirk that "de Nile" is a river in Egypt. [Joke!! denial - geddit?]

Joe meets up with Geena (who is still suffering a midriff crisis) and insists that she tell Dev about their cunning ruse of breaking-up with each other.

A police car arrives at the Rovers - the cops have come to question Shelley.

In the Corner Shop, Sunita is a bit cool towards Deirdre, even making tea for herself only. Fiz arrives, looking for something to help a hangover, and Sunita makes some catty remarks to Deirdre about being married to an older man. Kirk appears, and asks Fiz if she got what she wanted for her birthday. Fiz answers in the affirmative. (Nudge nudge!) Deirdre asks Sunita if there's anything wrong, but Sunita dismisses this with a remark about Deirdre being like a mother to her. Deirdre would have preferred 'big sister'.

Chez Audrey. She's left for work, but Richard creeps [is that the right verb?] into her house, and phones the Salon to remind Audrey to come round to see the photos after work.

In the cafe, Sarah is treated to some maternal pride from Eileen about Todd's going up to university to study law, while he pores over some prospectuses. Eileen asks Toyah why she never moved away from Weatherfield to some more salubrious part of the country, like Cardiff or Aberdeen, for her studies. (Scene is cut before Toyah is allowed to reply and tell Eileen to 'bog off'.)

Back in the Corner Shop, where Dev and Deirdre both wonder about Sunita's apparent coolness to the two of them.

The Hillman household, and Audrey and Gail are admiring the family photos, Audrey gushing about how lucky Gail is in having such a thoughtful man as Richard. Sarah arrives with sweet little Bethany and asks where Richard is. (I was wondering too!) Gail explains that he's with a client.

Richard is leaving Audrey's house [Is there some lack of time-sync here?] when a man arrives to read the electricity meter. Richard allows him access, and even knows where the meter is. (Mmmm - will Audrey not wonder how her meter was read in her absence?)

A longish scene in the Rovers... Mike is preening himself after his visit to Ken's class the previous day to talk to the pupils about his entrepreneurial skills, and Ken tells him that his pupils were impressed. Sunita watches Deirdre and thinks out loud to Shelley about her thinking she was/is God's gift. Shelley just happens to drop into the conversation that Deirdre and Mike had a fling a few years ago. (Might have been better not to have mentioned that, Shelley!) Peter arrives to collect Shelley and refuses a drink... ... and, on their way out, Joe arrives and Shelley admits to him that she told the police what she saw - that Joe had started the fight with Dev. Joe signals to Geena to meet him outside. Ken and Mike seem very friendly, and Ken suggests to Mike that he take on Aiden for a work-experience placement in the factory, which Mike refuses. Kirk arrives, just as Geena disappears to meet Joe. Toyah asks Fiz why she and Kirk are keeping their relationship a secret - are they ashamed of each other? Of course not. Following Toyah's advice to be open, Fiz approaches Kirk and, publicly, drags him off to 'her place'...

At the back door of the Rovers, Joe once again pleads with Geena to go and see Dev.

In Toyah's flat, Fiz calls the shots. She sits Kirk down and confronts him about their clandestine meetings. It's agreed - their relationship is now in the open, and they go off to consummate their deal. (Some things are best left to the imagination...)

Hillman domicile. Richard arrives late, but he explains that he's been working on his long-term plan. The photos are passed around, and Richard declares that he's the luckiest man in the world with such a lovely family.

Back in the Rovers, Jason and Tyrone are looking for Kirk and contemplating his suspected liaison with Fiz, with much banter. Fiz and Kirk arrive back from their chat in the flat, and seal their now-open relationship with a public snog. Toyah is pleased and congratulates Fiz.

Audrey leaves the Hillman's for home, only realising that she's left the washing machine on all day. Sarah, out walking little Bethany, meets Todd, who apologises for his Mum's remarks to her in the cafe that morning, and Sarah admits that her life is going to be around Weatherfield for the foreseeable future. Todd asks how David is doing, and Sarah is obviously proud of Ade for sorting-out the problem. Todd has no respect for Action Man...

Outside the back door of the Rovers, Joe again presses Geena to go and see Dev. [Time is of the essence, if you'll pardon the pun!]

In the Corner Shop, Deirdre is still wondering why Sunita is being so off-handed with her, but leaves for home without finding out the truth. Geena arrives to see Dev. [Sunita thinks it might be a good idea to have a revolving door installed for all the women in Dev's life!] Geena speaks to Dev and tells him that she has broken-up with Joe, as Dev wanted. However, he'll only drop the charges when he's sure that this is genuine; he's not a fool.

A sweet moment chez Hillman, with Richard remarking how photogenic they all are in the photos, and he isn't. Gail looks so happy. Richard appears so humble. A tender kiss is exchanged. Doorbell. The police enter, and inform Richard that they've found a body, which they believe to be the remains of the ex-Mrs Hillman, Patricia...

Sunday 29 September

Greetings. Up to my arms in water, with our kitchen sick being a little blocked. But I think (and hope) I have got it sorted! Anyway, with soggy script in hand ... here we go!

The police are at Richard and Gail's house. Richard asks them how they found Patrician's body. He thought that she had gone to Australia. They tell him that she never got there. The body was found by a man walking his dog by the canal.

Audrey returns home to find that all her washing was out of the washing machine (aah that is where my blocked sink came in!), and hanging up to dry.

The police arrange with Richard for him to come in and identify the body. They mention that he had been aware that Patricia had not arrived in Australia. When the police go Gail asks Richard why he never mentioned it before. He says that he was told on their wedding day and didn't want anything to spoil the day. He is certain it will be Patricia, because the police wouldn't have put him through this mental anguish unless they were virtually certain it was her.

Audrey tells Rita and Archie about her washing incident. They tell her that she probably forgot or Gail or Sarah probably put it out for her. Audrey tries to convince herself they are probably right.

Shelley has being using Peter's razor for her legs. Peter objects to it, and she demonstrates to him how painful leg waxing can be. He screams in pain!

Gina goes round to see Joe, making sure that Dev didn't see her, by going through back roads. She believes that Dev does trust her that she has split up from Joe but they agree they have to be very careful.

Rita tells Archie that she is looking for to the cruise that she is going on. Audrey comes by and Rita asks her if everything is ok. She wonders tounge-in-cheek whether anybody did any ironing for her?

Richard goes off in a police car to identify the body in the mortuary. Audrey sees him going off and asks Gail what is happening. Gail explains about Patricia. Audrey then asks Gail about the laundry. Gail says she knows nothing about it.

Vik goes to the Streetcars office to find the drivers sitting around. They are all waiting for a tip from the jockey.

Richard goes to the mortuary and identifies the body being that of his ex-wife. (oh no it's not, oh yes it is, oh no it's not ...!)

Vik tells Steve and Peter that he would share a tip with the others. Peter worries that it may affect his business.

When Richard returns home Gail is concerned that he has been away for a long time. He confirms that he identified the body as Patricia's. Gail wonders how it got there, but the police cannot thrown any more light on the matter. Audrey seemed surprised that he wasn't interrogate. Gail says he was there purely to identify the body.

Vik pretends to take a phone call from his jockey friend. Les and another driver follow him down the road. They are thrilled with the news that they overheard. The jump around singing "We're in the money".

Dev sees Gina in the street and asks if she has spoken to Joe about his ultimatum She says she had not, as far as she was concerned he was out of her life.

Gail wonders whether Patricia ever cashed his cheque. He says he would have noticed it if she hadn't. Gail tells Audrey to tell Richard about her washing episode. He sympathises with her, and Audrey thanks him for not laughing at her.

Gina unloads her troubles to Shelley. Shelley sends her home. She telephones Peter to say that she would not be in for supper which he was preparing for her.

Gina goes to see Joe again. He suggest she tells Dev that she wants to get back with him again. He believes this may be the only way that can prevent him going back to jail.

Archie asks Audrey if her mystery has been solved. Richard is at the bar ordering a whisky. Shelley thinks he is celebrating, but he explains he to got to identify wife's body.

Peter goes round to see Lucky in the florist, as he knows Shelley is working late. He explains his girlfriend us working. They make a date for tomorrow night.
