Stella is poking her nose into Dev's business again this morning, knocking on the door first thing and asking if there's anything he needs. He's in the middle of getting the kids out the door though they're reluctant to go to school. He promises it will get better. He promises that none of what everyone says about their mother is not true. 100%. He sends them outside to wait while he talks about it to Sunita. She thought he was going to follow the kids' lead. He says he is. They believe she was innocent.

Sean, wearing one of those new trendy onesie (i.e. a grown up baby-grow all in one), comes out yawning and notes that Eileen spent all night up watching telly. Paul comes in from his shift, safely and has brought bacon rolls for breakfast, in bed, Eileen suggests.

Back in the pub, Stella is talking to Gloria and Karl about Dev. Karl thinks Dev is wallowing and Gloria agrees, considering she thinks Sunita's guilty, too. Stella thinks the pair of them are callous, Dev has lost the love of his life.

Carla tells Rob they need to speak later but Tracy insists on having it out in the middle of the street. Carla tells him she's having papers drawn up by her solicitor and insists he's going to sign them. Sean earwigs until Carla sends him inside. Tracy's mouth starts up but Peter points out Carla could easily have sent them both to prison which shuts her up just long enough for the conversation to end whereupon she accuses Rob of rolling over.

Inside the factory, Michelle snarks at Sean for being late and then tells everyone that Rob and Tracy are no longer working there but won't give out any details. Carla comes in and joins Michelle in the office, confirming she's told the workers the news.

Tina watches over the baby in the incubator. Tommy arrives and asks after his health. He's doing ok, she says and she's being discharged later today. She says she's glad but she seems drawn to the baby.

Gary and Izzy are heading to the hospital and chat about baby names. They both know what they'd like and it turns out they both like the same name. Jake.

In the shop, Dev is talking to Sophie about the kids. What if they're right and Sunita's innocent. Sophie thinks he's becoming obsessed and reminds him that the police have closed the investigation. She doesn't think it's a good idea for him to be on what will likely be a fruitless quest. He starts to go over some of the inconsistencies like Sunita determined to get back to Dev even though he'd finished with her. Lloyd is there as well. Dev takes a call from the school. Asha is having trouble this time.

The workers are teasing Kirk for saying he's going to miss Tracy. Beth thinks he was a proper gentleman, never even copping a look when Tracy would bend over and when he bends over, Beth smacks him on the backside. Sean is tired and needs a decent night's sleep. Sally's phone dingles for a text and Sean notices she blushed. She admits she's got a date on Friday. Carla scolds them back to work again. Sean has a theory why Carla is out of sorts and will tell them later. In the office, Michelle tries to tell her that Rob dug his own grave but Carla feels like she's handed him the shovel.

At school, both Steve and Dev are in Brian's office. Turns out Asha pushed Amy over because Amy teased her about her mother. Steve blames Tracy as a rotten role model. Seems the kids have apologized and Brian suggests they leave it at that. Steve leaves but Brian wants more discussion with Dev. He ascertains that because they don't know more detail about what happened the night of the fire, they are coming under more attack from the kids. Brian suggests Dev talk to them both now and explain everything. Dev is reluctant and doesn't think it's going to help but says he'll talk to them.

Rob comes into the Bookies for the wages he feels he's owed. Peter pays him what he asks for but then pulls some back for all the damages from the broken coffee machine that he never got fixed when asked. He manages to take back almost all of the rest for this and that. Rob takes what little remains and then notices horse called Wrath of Khan and bets the 100 that was left on it.

Tea break in Underworld and the girls are teasing Sally a bit about internet dating. Sean poses the theory that he thinks Rob and Carla were the ones that stole the missing silk. Michelle comes in near the end and they cover with a pretty stupid lie. Michelle knows something was up but didn't catch it.

Dev has told the kids more and they ask their father if Sunita tried to kill Stella but he says he doesn't think that, because they believe in her so much. She'd never hurt anyone in a million years.

Rob watches the race and ends up winning the 7 to 1 odds so he gets 800 quid, which is 100 more than he had asked for back wages in the first place. Carla has come in and scolds Peter for taking the bet in the first place. They bicker but oh, look, apparently the winning horse has just been disqualified and Rob doesn't win a penny! Peter gloats like a gloating thing, much to Rob's chagrin and he slinks out the door. Then Carla tells Peter off but it doesn't bring his jubilant mood down a bit.

Sean runs into an old friend that he's not seen for awhile. They catch up and spot Marcus as well. The friend reveals he's met someone, also an old friend and they're getting married on Friday and they're invited. They explain they're not together anymore. That doesn't matter, they can come anyway and bring new partners. The friend is anxious for a proper catch up. Marcus looks a bit ill at the thought and Sean looks as if he's thinking "Oh this should be interesting".

Izzy and Gary see Tina packing to go home. Tina's glad to see they seem to be getting on better and Tommy tells them he and Tina are back together. Izzy and Gary look surprised but say they're pleased and they reveal the baby's name, Jake. Tina looks surprised by says it's nice. They go their separate ways and Tina expresses horror at the name.

Rob and Tracy are in the cafe, Rob feeling like a mug and Tracy agreeing. He thinks she could easily jump ship but she's determined to stick with him. He can be anything he wants and she reminds him that he should fight for that 30%. Sean and Marcus are having lunch together and talk about the wedding. Sean thinks he needs a new outfit since the best man is a fashion critic. They agree it will be nice to see their old gang again.

Dev, Steve, Lloyd and Karl are chatting at the bar. Steve reckons Amy is taking on too many of Tracy's characteristics. Steve and Lloyd exchange quite funny Tracy "stares". Stella gets caught up on the kids' scuffle. Dev tells them that he explained how he feels to the kids, that Sunita isn't a murderer.

Sean comes in after work to find Eileen having a nap. Sean wonders if she's ok but she says she is and he's not to tell Paul she was napping. He comes down from having a shower, singing loudly to The Smiths. Sean leaves again.

Back to the bar, the men think Dev is grieving but he denies it, his conviction is it's true. They point out that even the police think it's true that she burned the pub. Dev says the evidence doesn't add up. She wouldn't send him a text full of love and hope and then go over to the pub intent on arson and murder 30 minutes later. Gloria points out it doesn't make sense because she wasn't thinking straight. Also, Dev recalls that Stella and Sunita had a public argument at lunchtime as well, which is when they think she stole the keys. Dev doesn't think she'd have two arguments in one day if she was planning on nefarious deeds. Karl listens quietly from behind the bar. Gloria is callous but Stella tries to be sympathetic as do his friends though they don't think he's on the right path. He is sure. She's innocent and that's that. He's got to talk the police into reopening the investigation. Oh Karl doesn't like the sound of that!

Dev's in the Rovers telling Steve and Lloyd about his plan to prove Sunita's innocence. Karl tries to talk him round, telling him it will only make the children more confused but Dev's on a mission and says he's going to the police so Karl offers to go with him for moral support. But Dev doesn't need any help and says he feels better than he has done in ages.

Tommy has brought Tina home from the hospital. She's complaining that Izzy and Gary have decided to call the baby Jake but that's not the true source of her worries. She tells Tommy that she feels she's deserted the baby and she's struggling with her emotions over leaving baby Jake at the hospital. Over at Underworld, Sean goes into the office to offer to make a brew but Michele and Carla realise he's only on the hunt for some juicy gossip and they aren't about to satisfy his curiosity. After he's left Michele tells Carla she reckons Tracy will dump Rob after what's happened since Tracy only likes men who are handsome, gormless and minted. "Like Steve?" asks Carla, cattily.

Lloyd and Steve go round to see Dev and find him going through all of Sunita's things. He's found her diary and text messages on her phone. They list everyday activities with no mention of any plan to burn down the Rovers so Dev is convinced this proves her innocence. While Steve goes off to put the kettle on, Dev puts through a call to DS Willats at the police.

Back at Underworld, Rob has gone over to sign the contract to hand his 30% share in the business to Carla. She was hoping for a bit of humility from him but Rob isn't about to apologise. In fact, he wants her to give him £50,000 for helping to build up the business. Carla can't believe the cheek of her brother, especially when he plays the poverty card and she reminds him of where they both came from and how she knows what it's like to be skint.

Over at Eileen's, Sean has popped home for a snack between his jobs and is complaining to Eileen about his lack of sleep which has been caused by Eileen's own insomnia. Paul meanwhile seems to be the only one who is blissfully unaware that Eileen has been unable to sleep every time he's out on a nightshift.

The police arrive at Dev's following his phone call. They understand it's urgent and send Lloyd and Steve packing before asking Dev if he has some new information. They look a touch unimpressed when Dev reveals that the hard new evidence they need to reopen the case is no more than Dev's gut feeling and strong belief that Sunita is innocent.

Lloyd and Steve are in the Rovers filling in Gloria, Stella and Karl on the visit from the police. Gloria is still 100% convinced Sunita did it and Karl says if they don't try to talk some sense into Dev the children are going to end up in front of a shrink.

We return to Dev's where he's listing all of Sunita's good points to the police, even including the fact that she recycled long before it became a requirement. DC Willats is trying to remain polite but he reminds Dev that Sunita was drunk, emotional and threatening on the night of the fire. He also mentions the stolen keys but Dev says Sunita never stole anything in her life apart from a lipstick when she was nine years old. DC Willats brings up the incident with the criminal damage to the car last year, pointing out that Sunita was capable of acting out of character. "Please," begs Dev. "The person who did this is still out there." But DS Willats replies that he's sorry but all the evidence is to the contrary.

In the back room of the Rovers Karl is comforting Stella who is distressed by the fact that she's having to relive the night of the Rovers' fire all over again. She says if only she hadn't tried to set Dev straight about Sunita but Karl tells her to look him in the eye. He reminds her that Sunita is the guilty one and she has to stop torturing herself.

In the Rovers, Sean is ear-wigging and making bitchy comments while Maria and Marcus are trying to have a conversation. Maria tells Marcus that she hopes he doesn't mind but she's agreed that they will have drinks with her friend Donna on Friday. Maria seems surprised that Marcus looks so happy with the idea but Sean knows exactly why Marcus would be keen to be busy on Friday evening.

Tina and Tommy are having a drink together and she's complaining to him about how the Windass family are fawning over the baby when, speak of the devil, Gary and Owen arrive. Tina doesn't exactly look thrilled when Gary asks to sit down at their table.

Paul is about to go off on his nightshift. As he goes to kiss Eileen goodbye he finally notices that she looks worn out. She insists that she's fine but Paul tells her to make sure she gets an early night.

Dev is round at Stella's questioning her about what happened on the night of the fire. Stella's really upset as she recalls her conversation with Sunita earlier in the evening. She tells Dev how she thinks Sunita must have leant over the bar and swiped the keys while they were talking. Karl tells Dev they need to wrap the conversation up.

Out in the bar, Sean is doing his own interrogation with Marcus. He wants to know why he deliberately forgot about the wedding reception he'd promised to go to on Friday. Marcus tries to make out he didn't fancy it but Sean tells him he means he can't face it.

Tina tells Tommy that she wants to go back to the hospital to see the baby who she's started referring to as "my little boy". She says she's worried about him left all alone in his incubator with no company. Tommy doesn't look happy but he agrees to give her a lift.

Rob turns up at the factory to see Carla who has summoned him via a text message. He thinks she's come around when he spies a cheque lying on the side but he's disappointed when he sees it's only for £5,000. Carla tells him it's intended to keep him out of prison. "It's to ease your guilty conscience more like," says Rob. Either way, they have words and then Rob scribbles his signature on the contract. Rob tells Carla it's not all bad news because he's decided to stick around with Tracy. Carla predicts that Tracy will have him back inside prison by Christmas. As Rob walks out we see Carla on the verge of breaking down.

Dev and Karl are in the back yard of the Rovers, having a heart to heart. Karl tells Dev that the buck stops with him, that if he hadn't had the affair with Sunita she wouldn't have hated Stella so much and Dev says if he'd been a better partner she wouldn't have been tempted to stray. But Dev is on a mission to clear Sunita's name. Karl points out that she did have a motive, along with the keys and that she was found in the pub. He says that nobody sympathises with Dev more than him and Stella but it's got to stop. He says that Dev is the one who will suffer if he doesn't draw the line, him and his kids.

Wednesday 5 June

It's very early morning and Eileen is already out washing her windows, waiting for Paul to return home from his shift. She's pleased to see him when he arrives, and takes him in for breakfast.

In the cafe, Roy thinks he's seen a rat out by the kebab shop.

Sean asks Marcus if he's told Maria about Ben's wedding, but Marcus doesn't want to talk about it.

Tommy and Tina are also in the cafe, having breakfast. Sylvia says it's nice to see them together again, and supposes it's 'job done' now that the baby is born.

Dev goes to see Paul, he's got questions about the fire. He can't understand why, if Sunita started the fire, she didn't get out as soon as possible. The fire started in the cellar, why was Sunita found in the back room? Paul can't really help, and Eileen gently asks Dev to go. All this is watched by Karl from across the road.

Tracy and Rob are in the cafe, discussing what he's going to do with the five thousand pounds given to him by Carla. Deirdre hears about it and hopes they haven't been up to any more scams.

Over at Underworld, Carla gets a phone call from another factory owner. It seems that Rob rang him earlier asking about work. Sadly, Carla tells Michelle that she told him not to even think of employing him.

Tommy is in the Kabin talking to Rita when Tina comes in. She says she's going to go up to the hospital again. Rita tells her that she's done enough and should think about taking a break from it all now.

Gary goes into the hospital and a nurse tells him that Jake is having an X-ray as he brought up milk with bile in it.

Sean is in the salon and tells Audrey about the wedding do on Friday. He says that Ben is an old friend of himself and Marcus. Audrey assumes that Marcus will be going too, but is surprised that Maria hasn't mentioned it. Maria overhears this, but as far as she's concerned they are going for a drink with a friend of hers on Friday. She wonders if Marcus has been invited. Sean tells her that Marcus was invited, but has said he has other plans. Maria is puzzled.

Beth and Craig are in the Kabin, he is choosing crisps. Norris is wittering away to Karl when Dev comes in, waving a £20 note and asking for change. He then turns the conversation round to the night of the fire, and asks Norris if he saw anything unusual. Norris doesn't think he did, but Craig suddenly looks very worried and tells his mother that he doesn't want anything, and hurries out. As Karl goes to leave, he apologises to Dev for coming on strong last night, but he was upsetting Stella. Dev tells him it won't happen again. Karl goes on to say he thought he saw him doing the same to Paul earlier. Dev repeats that it won't happen again. Eventually, as Lloyd comes in, Karl leaves.

Izzy and Gary are in with the baby, worrying. The doctor comes in and tells them that Jake has an inflammation of the intestine, and they're going to take him off milk and put him on a drip. It's possible that he might need an operation. The condition could be fatal.

Dev is in the cafe with Steve and Lloyd, and Roy confronts him over the situation with the rat outside the kebab shop. Dev, however, has his mind on other things. He talks about the fire, and tells Steve and Lloyd how Karl has said he feels responsible as it was his affair with Sunita that started it all off.

Audrey and Maria are in the pub when Marcus comes in. Maria asks him why he never said anything about the wedding reception. She assumes it was because she had already arranged to see her friend, and he agrees that was the reason. She tells him she would far rather go to a wedding reception, she can see her friend any time.

Tina tells Tommy that she's thought about what Rita said, and she knows she's right. She's done her bit with the baby, and now it's over to Izzy and Gary. Just then her phone rings, it's Izzy telling her about the problem with Jake. She goes rushing off to the hospital.

Deirdre is in the cab office, ordering a cab. Just then Steve gets a text from Fat Brenda, she can't make her night shift. Eileen offers to do it, although she's just done a day shift.

In the Bistro, Rob confronts Carla about the bad reference she gave the other factory owner. He's furious, but Carla wonders how he would expect her to find one good word to say about him after what he did. He snaps that he won't forget this, but Carla tells him he made this bed for himself, now he should lie in it.

Over in the Rovers, Lloyd tells Karl to get off Dev's case. Karl points out that Dev is going round upsetting everyone. "Since when have you cared about other people's feelings?" says Lloyd, and Steve tells him that if Dev needs telling that he's out of order, it will be his real mates who do it, not Karl.

Over in the hospital, the doctor tells Gary and Izzy, Tina and Tommy that the baby will need an operation as he's not getting any better.

Roy comes into the cafe with a large plastic bag full of rubbish that he's collected from outside the kebab shop, including half-eaten burgers and kebabs. He's sure that there must be other rats lurking.

Back at the hospital, Tina is in bits, worrying about the baby. She tells Tommy that she wants to help him, but there's nothing she can do. He puts his arm around her, and she weeps.

Anne Logan.

Friday 7 June

Here's the first half of the hour-long episode for Friday.

Sylvia comes down to the cafe to find Roy emptying the freezer. Someone's left the door open and all the food will be ruined, he says. He and Sylvia both denying doing this and Sylvia blames Anna, who isn't there.

Tina's in the waiting room at the hospital with Gary and Izzy. The doctor comes in and tells them it's not good news. They will have to operate on the baby. He says the surgeon will be along to explain more and someone has to sign the consent form. "Tina?"

Eileen's furiously scrubbing her front step. Deirdre makes a comment and Sean steps outside (and is told off for stepping on the step) and mentions that Eileen worked all night at the cab office and hasn't been to bed. Paul arrives home from work and makes an unfortunate mention of the step-scrubbing reminding him of his Nan.

Anna and Owen arrive at the hospital. Tina comes back and Gary makes a sharp comment about her taking a long time. She explains she wanted to read the form carefully and make sure what she was signing.

Dev spots a target in the shop. He thinks Tyrone will empathize with him - after all, who else would appreciate that the police don't always get it right. Tyrone points out that things do look bad against Sunita but Dev points out that in Ty's case the truth came out in the end. It's all down to Dev (and his clipboard) to prove the truth.

Tina's left the neonatal unit and sits with her head in her hands. She asks Tommy if they've been to take the baby to theatre yet. Tommy tries to reassure her but she says she felt as if she signed his death warrant when she signed the consent form.

Roy's cooking all the food from the freezer. He says he'd rather give it away than waste it. Sylvia's appalled at this attitude. She makes a deal - they'll continue to sell the food and if it's not all sold by 4.30pm, Roy can start giving it away.

Sean watches from a table as Marcus, Maria and Liam come into the cafe. Marcus suggests they should all go to the beach rather than to the wedding reception. Maria points out she's already had her best dress cleaned. When she and Liam have gone, Marcus goes to have a word with Sean. Sean defensively says he didn't mean to mention the wedding reception in front of Maria. Marcus says all he asked was that Sean keep him big gob shut for a change. Annoyed, Sean suggests that instead of having a go at him, Marcus would be better taking a good look at himself.

Sally, Sophie and Jenna discuss what Sally might wear to meet her internet date. You can't go wrong with a Peter Pan collar, apparently. Sally's close to backing out of the date but Sophie says she and Jenna will come and pretend they're not with Sally. Then they'll be there if things go badly and can rescue her when she gives them a pre-arranged signal.

Deirdre's in the taxi office booking a cab to go into town. (The tram runs right over the top of the street. Is there no station nearby?) Ah, it's all a plot device so she can mention how hard Eileen's working and that she's worried about her.

Back at the hospital, the doctor explains the surgery went well. They've removed a small portion of the baby's intestine and hope that will get rid of the necrotising enterocolitis. And yes, they can see him. Owen, Izzy and Gary head off through the doors without a backward glance. Only Anna checks to see that Tina is OK with this. As they're left alone in the waiting room, Tommy holds Tina.

In the bistro, Marcus and Maria arrive at the wedding reception. Maria is put out that she's introduced just as "the lovely Maria" with no mention of their relationship or her status as his partner.

It must be 4:30 or later because Roy's laid out all the food for folk to take. Brian, of course, is there with a calico bag at the ready. He explains that Julie's away looking after her mother. Sylvia, who is still annoyed that Anna left the freezer door open, says some very sarcastic things to him about the amount of food he's taking. Then she tells Roy that he's been acting very oddly lately, even by his own standards.

In the pub, Tyrone tells Steve and Lloyd about Dev. They suggest Dev needs something to take his mind of it, though none of the options they suggest (golf, paintballing) seem right. They ask Stella and she says she doesn't think they need to do anything for Dev except to listen to him and reassure him he's not alone. Karl watches this conversation thoughtfully.

Sean chats to the happy couple but won't tell them any gossip about Marcus.

Karl takes drinks to the Steve and Lloyd and tells them he's seriously worried about Dev. He asks whether they think Sunita started the fire and Lloyd admits it looks that way. Karl tells them the night was the worst night of his life and he thought he was going to die but it's his way to keep all of that inside himself. He says they're not doing Dev any favours by going along with his ideas. Grief is a terrible thing but even allowing for that, Dev's not in his right mind. "I really think he's losing the plot."

Tina's annoyed she's not with the baby. She says he knows her voice and will be distressed that she's not there. "It's cruel to keep me away." She tells Tommy she's messed up. She's totally out of her depth and doesn't know what to do about it.

As they cross the road to the Rovers, Sally regrets choosing that venue - though Sophie points out she'll be able to get home quickly if it all goes wrong. They discuss the signal that Sally needs help. Sally thinks she could play Rescue Me on the jukebox. Sophie thinks a text message will do.

Eileen comes in to find Paul's made a casserole. Deirdre arrives for a chat and Paul goes off to work. Eileen opens some wine.

In the pub, Stella notices Sally and her daughter and Jenna are sitting apart. At the other table, Sally's on her second wine.

At the wedding reception, Marcus has been trapped by the newlyweds who start to question him. He tries to escape to the toilet but they keep him there so they can give him some advice: He'll never pull while he's with his "wingman," his new BFF. They start to ask questions about how long Marcus and Maria have been friends and, with Maria listening, Marcus tells them they're not just friends. They share a flat. Then he takes a deep breath and adds, ". . . because we're together." Maria doesn't look happy that it took so long for him to admit this.

Tina tells Tommy she loves the baby. "What am I going to do if I lose him?" Tommy points out that Jake's not hers to lose. Tina knows that but she says her heart doesn't. She realised this when she knew he might die. "That's when it hit me. I don't think I can hand him over."

The end of the first half.

Taking up where we left off, Tommy is questioning Tina, he can't believe she really wants to keep the baby. She is confused, is not sure herself what she really means.

At the wedding reception Sean is sitting at the same table as Marcus and Maria, the latter of whom has a face like a smacked backside. Marcus is not having a good time either, saying it is getting too cheesy for his taste and suggests to Maria that they leave. Maria, stonily faced, asks him if he really wants to leave because he is ashamed to be seen with her. He denies this, but she is not convinced and storms off to the loo.

The atmosphere is no happier back at the hospital either. Tommy figures the whole thing has turned into a mess, both are blaming themselves. Tommy blames himself because it was his money problems that started it all, and Tina is blaming herself because she was an idiot to believe she was going into it with the idea she was doing something good for someone, and had no inkling she would end up feeling the way she does about the baby.

Anna and Owen arrive, so they put on brave faces for their benefit. Anna is full of sympathy for Tina, saying how hard it all must be for her too, but has no idea what is really going on in Tina's head because she tells her she is just fine, just worried about the health of the baby.

The large glasses are out and are being filled up from a bottle of red over in No. 11. Eileen and Deirdre are well on their way to feeling little or no pain. Deirdre seriously tells Eileen that when she gets to the pearly gates, and 'thingy' asks her to sum up her life, she will tell him "disappointed". Eileen nods in solemn agreement, and tells her she too will tell him "disappointed - with an undercurrent of fear". Deirdre asks her what she is frightened of - not that she will remember the answer in the morning, and Eileen tells her that life is frightening enough, but then along comes something even more frightening to slap you round the face. Deirdre tells her she should try walking in her shoes. Eileen looks down concerned and asks her if they are not comfy then? Realising she is talking about her philandering husband, she tells her that her Paul would never stray. Deirdre slurs "Aww, that's lovely, but didn't he live with you 'and' his wife for a bit?" She immediately apologises, telling her that her remark had been below the belt.

Eileen is too sozzled to take offence though, and only notices the word 'belt'. She tells Deirdre she has noticed she wears a lot of belts, and asks her where she gets them. "Ooh all over", says Deirdre. "They could tell a few tales could my belts". Eileen giggles at the thought of 'talking accessories'. "Actually, I bought this one online", says Deirdre. "Shall I give you the link?" - Pregnant pause - "Nah - you're all right", says Eileen pulling a face. "Oh - OK", says a puzzled looking Deirdre. I loved this scene between drunken Deirdre and Eileen, and especially as they were talking about Deirdre's belts, the accessory we have been ridiculing online for years! Ha ha!!

Now we are in the Rovers, and Sally is still impatiently waiting in a booth for her blind date, while Sophie and Jenna sit across from her at a table. Suddenly a nice looking stranger comes in holding a large bunch of flowers, Sophie is well impressed, though remarks he looks nothing like his photo. Not surprising as he goes over to a woman sitting at the bar, kisses her and tells her she looks lovely. Sally's expectant face falls, as does Sophie's.

Maria comes out of the loo, and Marcus asks her if she is OK. She is very uncomfortable and feels everyone is talking about them. He assures her they are not that interesting, and nobody is talking about them. He is wrong though, they are the hot topic of conversation between Sean and the happy couple. They are asking in surprise if Marcus is actually sleeping with Maria, which gets overheard, and immediately gets Maria's back up. She tells them it isn't always about sex, but they contradict her, and ask Marcus if he is with her because he wants kids. He retorts that he fell in love with Maria, but they are not buying that one, and ask Marcus if he has been going to one of those people who claim to cure gays. Sean gets his two penn'orth in by suggesting that possibly Marcus is just having a mid-life crisis.

Marcus fights back that he hasn't stopped anything, he has simply fallen in love with a woman, but is still a gay man. Maria stops dead in her tracks and stares at him with her mouth open. Her reaction doesn't go unnoticed by the two men, who point out that even Maria can't get her head round it, and that it is too bizarre for words. Marcus reminds the Groom that when he helped him come out to his parents, he had told them 'you can't help who you fall in love with', which is all he has done, fallen in love with a woman. His friend finds this totally unbelievable, so Marcus ushers Maria out the door, saying he has had enough.

Rita arrives at the hospital, and is delighted to hear the operation on the baby has gone well. Just as Tina goes ahead of her to go back to see how he is doing, Tommy grabs Rita's arm, and quietly tells her about Tina's decision to keep the baby. Rita is horrified, and asks him to stay out, for a bit, as she would like to speak to Tina alone.

Inside the room, Rita tells Tina she knows about her decision. She tells her he is beautiful, and can see why she might be feeling confused, especially after the operation. Tina tells her it has nothing to do with the operation, she felt it the second he was born. Rita points out he is not hers to keep, biologically he is just not hers. Tina snaps that you don't know how it feels until you have had a baby. (Ooh, low blow!) She immediately apologises, saying what she meant was she always thought she was the least maternal person in the world, and now look at her. Owen comes into the room, so that is the end of that conversation.

Out in the hallway at the hospital, Rita puts her arm around Tina and assures her that what she has been told will stay with her, but they haven't finished their conversation yet. Tina nods in agreement, and thanks her for coming. After Rita leaves, she looks indignantly at Tommy, who asks what she had said to her. Hands on hips, she defiantly tells him she had pointed out the baby isn't hers. They don't have time to discuss it further because Owen approaches, he tells them he was waiting for Rita to leave so he could give her what he came for, and hands her an envelope containing the balance of the agreed sum of money. Tina is upset, saying she feels like a prostitute. Owen assures her there is nothing sordid or wrong about what she has done. He goes on to say that all she has to do now is sign the baby over to Gary and Izzy. Knowing how unstable Tina is feeling, Tommy asks Owen to please give them a little time on their own, which he is more than willing to do.

Tina is losing it now, she cries that she is selling her baby - that she might as well stick him on EBay, because that is how the little one will see it when he is older. Tommy tries to tell her it's not like that, selling a baby is what his father did with him. "Exactly!" cries Tina, "And you have hated his guts ever since!" Before they have time to discuss this any further, yet another Windass shows up. This time it is Gary, who is in a bit of a panic because the consultant wants to see them all.

Stella, Karl and Audrey are wanting Maria and Marcus to tell them all about the wedding, and are surprised to see them back so early. They are not really in the mood to discuss it however, and Maria has one or two bones to pick with Marcus. It's all slipping into place now as to why he had kept quiet about the invitation in the first place. Marcus on the other hand doesn't relish the idea of washing their dirty linen in public, and suggests they go outside for a bit of fresh air. (It's nice to see Pete Reidy sitting supping his beer in the booth behind them. Did you read his page on my website? He is an excellent country singer! Anyway, I digress...)

Out of earshot, Maria wants to know how Marcus could have told his friends he was gay. "But I am", says Marcus. Maria is still gobsmacked by this, and tells him it completely undermines their relationship. He just doesn't get what the big deal is, but she points out that it makes her look like some kind of fad, something he will get fed up with in short order like a new diet. (Actually she said "fed up of", but I couldn't bring myself to type that, because I hate it!!!) He tells her she is just being stupid, but she asks him how long he lasted on the 'Atkins'. "Two weeks", says Marcus. "Exactly" snaps Maria, and storms out.

The consultant tells the relieved little group that he is pleased with Jake's progress, and possibly in a couple of days they will remove the ventilator, and will possibly be able to consider some feeds. Nobody is more happy to hear this than Tina.

We are now in Sally's very pleasant back garden. She is sitting out there in front of the outdoor fireplace which is blazing up the chimney, and is having a glass of wine with the girls. She tells them she has never been so embarrassed in all her life, including the times she has been seen in public with Rosie in one of her more revealing outfits. Someone is at the door, but Sally is depressed and couldn't care less who it is, so Jenna goes to answer it.

She has to slap on a false smile when she sees who the visitor is though, because it's Dev. He has come to quiz Sophie some more about Sunita's last moments. He asks her if she held anything back from the police, which annoys Sophie, who tells him of course she didn't hold anything back. He then asks if Sunita was upset or angry when she left the Bistro. Sophie tells him she was upset. He then asks her why she just let her go, why she hadn't stopped her. Sophie is getting upset now, telling him the fire wasn't her fault, she couldn't have known what Sunita was going to do, she had just assumed she and Dev had just had a row. Dev tells her they hadn't had a row, not then. Sally tries to interject that he is upsetting Sophie, but he takes no notice.

The very complicated argument is still going on at the back of the Rovers between Marcus and Maria. He tells her a tale of a famous gay singer who really upset the gay community by falling in love with a woman. He points out he was still gay, but just loved a woman. Maria doesn't care about him, she wants Marcus to say he is straight. He tells her he doesn't care about labels, doesn't even care about designer labels, but doesn't tell her he is straight. He suggests they go and pick up Liam, but she wants to stay and have another drink with Audrey, her fabulously straight friend. Sighing, he kisses her on the cheek and leaves.

The three women are now in the conservatory, while Dev is sitting in the back garden thinking things over. Sally assures the other two he will leave shortly, as soon as he realises he has made a fool of himself. Jenna suggests putting on some music, but Sophie doesn't want party music, or it will encourage him to stay. Sally suggests Adele. Dev comes in and apologises for earlier. Sally tells him they understand, and assures him he didn't make a fool of himself -LOL, I don't think it had occurred to him that he might have until she said that. He suddenly notices the music, and stops to listen. Sally says "Yes, it's Adele, isn't she miserable?" Dev starts to cry, it had apparently been Sunita's favourite song. Horrified, Sally motions to Jenna to take it off, but he wants to hear it, saying it would be good for him. He sits down, but doesn't listen for long before he starts pressing Sophie again to try to remember something else from that night. Sally has had enough, and tells Jenna to turn the music off. She tells Dev she is really sorry for what he is going through, and can't begin to imagine how he must feel, but has to ask him to leave, as she can't stand by and watch him upset Sophie any more. He bursts into tears again, and apologises to them.

A very drunk Deirdre is lurching down the stairs singing and praising the merits of potpourri. It's all wasted on Eileen though, she has fallen asleep in a drunken stupor on the sofa. Covering her up with the blanket that just happens to be draped on the back, (have you ever noticed how these houses always have a blanket at hand any time someone falls asleep in an inappropriate place? Personally, I would have to go to the airing cupboard/linen closet to find one!) Eileen stirs and asks if it is Paul. Deirdre tells her who she is, and Eileen mumbles "belts". "Pardon?", says Deirdre.

Not one to go home while there is still a drop of wine left, Deirdre perches on the little bit of sofa that is left, pours Eileen's dregs into her own glass, and sips away to the sound of Eileen's snoring.

Back at the hospital, Tina is apologising for the things she said earlier to Tommy. She tells him she feels now it was just the stress of the operation talking, and when she really thinks about it, how can she possibly raise the baby on her own as a single mother, it makes no sense.

Karl is just coming around the corner, and spots Dev leaving No. 4. He is begging Sophie to be sure to let him know if she remembers any little thing more - anything at all. She tiredly tells him she will, and slams the door in his face.

Audrey and Maria are leaving the Rovers, and the latter seems a little perkier than she did before. However, she poses the question to Audrey that if Marcus is still a gay man, what is he doing with her? Audrey jokes, telling her she can't imagine, her being such a plain Jane and all. Maria worries that from now on, every time she sees a good looking man she will worry that Marcus fancies him. Audrey points out that if he was straight, she would have the same worry, only with every pretty woman. Maria is still having such a hard time with it though, telling Audrey the two of them have such an amazing time both inside and outside the bedroom, and just can't get her head around the fact he still considers himself to be gay.

Karl is talking to Stella, saying they can't pay any attention to Dev, as he is talking a load of nonsense. She tells him she knows deep down that Sunita started the fire, but with Dev going on and on about it, she just can't get the whole thing out of her mind.

Tommy comes into the room where Tina is fondly watching over Jake. He tells her if she is serious about wanting to keep him, and she assures him she thinks she is, (well, that must be a record turnaround, it was only four paragraphs ago she was saying the opposite!), he tells her in that case, she should know he will stand by her, and help her bring him up. She asks him not to offer that if he doesn't mean it, but he tells her he really does mean it. He goes on to say he already let her down once, and will never make that mistake again. If that is what she wants, he will be beside her all the way. She asks him if he thinks she can really do that to Izzy, and he tells her he thinks her mind is already made up. She nods, saying she is sure it is what she wants. He tells her in that case, they will do it together.

Monday 10 June

Tina is gazing into the incubator when Tommy arrives. She's a bit tetchy. The nurse says the baby has done so well over the weekend that he can come out and be held for a short while. Tina looks excited but her face falls a bit when the nurse suggests they call Gary and Izzy. Tommy is given the task of phoning while Tina has a bit more time alone with the baby.

Paul and Eileen are walking to the cab office. They're arguing about her state and he thinks she should go to the doctor, she looks pale. Lloyd takes the mick as well. Eileen admits she and Eileen had too much to drink on Friday and is still recovering. Paul gets out before he puts both feet in his mouth.

Meanwhile, Armstrong/Windasses are in the cafe when Gary arrives with the news.

Dev has Steve in the corner shop and is explaining, in that on-edge righteous manner he's had recently, that he has been reminded by a cousin how poorly Sunita holds her drink. As Karl comes in, he points out that Sunita had a lot to drink the day of the fire and he found a half empty wine bottle in the back yard. How could she have sneaked quietly to the pub and managed to set it afire in that condition? Steve concedes the point. Karl smiles weakly.

At the hospital, Gary and Izzy haven't arrived yet. Tina decides she wants to hold the baby now. The nurse gently objects and reminds her that Izzy and Gary were promised the first hold. Tina pulls rank as the legal mother.

Maria and Audrey are in the cafe. Maria admits she's being irrational and wishes things could just be simple. She leaves. Tracy and Rob are looking at job ads in the newspaper and there's nothing appealing. She thinks she'll go into town but Rob thinks they both need to get work and start grafting. This elicits a chuckle from Audrey at the thought of Tracy grafting (working) and remarks that hard work is a foreign concept to her. Rob defends her talents but Audrey isn't won over.

Gary pops into the cab office wondering where his ordered taxi is. He finds Eileen asleep in her chair. When woken up she calls one of the cabs and tells him to get back to base. Gary realizes she hadn't even ordered the cab he called for an hour since. Lloyd and Steve arrive and hear Gary's complaint. Lloyd insists she apologize and promises to help Gary out and then promises to have a little talk with Eileen.

Baby Jake is brought out to a nervous Tina who's sitting in a rocking chair. When the baby is put into her arms it's clear she's emotional and awestruck over the tiny scrap in her arms. Tommy slips in as she stares at the baby. She whispers that she can hear him breathing. Tears trickle down her cheek and she kisses him on the forehead. Tommy looks concerned but agrees he is beautiful.

After the break, she's smiling. The nurse warns that he will have to go back in the incubator soon. Just then, Gary and Izzy arrive and are dismayed to see her holding him. Izzy questions it. Izzy starts to get upset but Gary smooths things over and asks if Izzy could hold the baby, too. The nurse promises they can work something out.

Lloyd is expressing his annoyance towards Eileen. Steve tries to stay out of it but is dragged into it. Eileen is defensive. Lloyd tells her she needs to get a grip. After he leaves, Steve offers that she can go home for a rest but she declines. He leaves too, just as Deirdre arrives. Eileen admits to her friend that she's falling apart.

Izzy is cuddling the baby. Gary wants to talk to her and says watching her hold the baby makes all they've been through worth while. He leans in and promises the baby he'll never let him down. The nurse comes back in and they know they have to put the baby back in the incubator but they are assured there's always tomorrow. Tina and Tommy are watching through the window.

In the cab office, Eileen tells Deirdre she can't settle down at night for the fears of what could be happening to Paul. Deirdre insists she needs help.

In the hallways, Tommy points out that Tina will tear Izzy and Gary's life apart if she keeps the baby. She's conflicted and feels guilty for loving her own baby. She apologizes but he says it's not him she needs to say that too.

Leanne is making an appointment for her hair. Audrey asks if she can slip in for a late lunch. David needs to pop into town and asks Maria to cover but he won't and Maria shouts at him just as Marcus arrives. Audrey plays referee and orders them to sort themselves out by the time she gets back from her late lunch.

Dev is making copious notes in the shop when he hears a car alarm go off. He leans out the door to see someone shutting it off down at the end of the street and is struck by an idea. He goes back inside and grabs a package of candles, lights a couple and climbs up to the smoke alarm, blows out the flames and then, holding the smoking wicks near the alarm, sets it off. He then jumps down and goes outside where he sees Lloyd who wonders what's going on. Mind the show, he shouts and goes running around the back and down the ginnel to his own back yard at Number 7, Karl hears him clattering past the wheely bins and peeks out the back gate of the pub yard to see Dev come back out of the yard of Number 7 and looking triumphant over something. Is he judging the distance to sound ratio? I think so, but Karl looks mystified.

At the hospital, Jake is back in the box with Izzy and Gary watching him. They discuss how weird it was that Tina had held the baby earlier. He says they need to have a chat with Tina about her taking more a back seat. Izzy is Jake's mum and it's time for her to take over.

Maria and Marcus are sitting on the bench. She wants to know where she stands. He insists he's committed to her. She thinks her idea of commitment and his is vastly different. He's hurt. If she means because she's a straight woman, then he doesn't really have an answer to that. Where do we go from here? He takes Ozzy and walks off. Across the road, Eileen and Deirdre come out of the clinic. She admits she told the doctor that she wasn't sleeping but not why. He gave her a small prescription for sleeping pills but Eileen doesn't think it's going to help much but Deirdre thinks it will at least help her get caught up on her sleep and she can think more clearly. She hopes so because currently, she has no idea what she's going to do in the long term.

Leanne chats to Stella in the pub. Stella can hardly wait to move back into the pub (in about a week). With Karl listening in from a few feet away, she says Dev's rambling isn't going to stress her own when she moves back in and she admonishes Leanne for never visiting anymore. She invites her and Nick for a drink later but Leanne tries to get out of it as short notice. Stella plies the guilt so Leanne agrees and leaves. Steve comes in, it seems Karl has texted him. Karl describes Dev's antics in the ginnel and thinks Dev has lost the plot completely. He thinks Steve should stop humouring and encouraging Dev. Steve wants to support his friend and isn't going to be the one that causes Dev to lose hope.

Tracy comes to find Rob in the Bistro. She is pleased with herself. She's got a job. Marketing by telephone. Audrey is there and scoffs at it as a telemarketing job and doesn't think Tracy has the temperament for it. Tracy admits to Rob it's not a very good job but he just says she'll be fine.

Outside the hospital, Tina is pacing. Tommy says she's got to tell Gary and Izzy now what she's decided. He'll come with her. They turn and go in. The new parents, Owen and Anna are all in the lounge making small talk about how happy they all are after Izzy got to hold the baby for the first time. T&T arrive. Owen hugs her warmly to thank her for what she's done. Anna follows that up with a kiss on the cheek as well. Gary asks them to sit down and says that he and Izzy want to talk about what happens next. Tina agrees. The end credits roll. What happens next? Stay tuned!

The Windass clan are gathered at the hospital where Tina breaks the news to them that she's decided to keep the baby. They can't believe what they're hearing and Gary points out that it's their baby. Izzy can't believe it's happening but Tommy says he's really sorry, Tina means what she says.

Audrey's doing Leanne's hair when Maria comes bursting into the salon after her set-to with Marcus so they go into the back so that Audrey can try and talk some sense into her. She tells Maria she's got to trust Marcus, it's clear he loves her to bits and if she's not careful she'll spoil the relationship. It's not the only thing that's in danger of being spoiled so Audrey hurries back to Leanne before she gets sued for ruining her hair.

Back at the hospital Gary and Izzy are trying the sympathetic approach with Tina and they tell her it's understandable she's bonded with the baby. But Tina now thinks of it as her baby and Owen accuses her of reneging on the deal. Tina says she'll give the money back which causes Anna to call her a nasty little cow. But worse is to come: to the horror of Gary and Izzy Tina tells them she's decided they shouldn't be allowed to see the baby any more.

We return to the salon where Audrey takes a phone call from Marcus. He has a message for Maria - he wants her to meet him in the Bistro after work. Despite Audrey telling her not to be so ridiculous, Maria decides it can only mean one thing: Marcus is going to dump her.

Round at Eileen's, Sean is full of news about a big fire over at Thornton Street. Only trouble is, while he's telling Jason, Eileen overhears and it sends her into a state. Sean and Jason tell her she's going to have to do something about the fact that she's not eating or sleeping and worrying about Paul all the time but she won't speak to him about it because last time she did, they almost split up.

Gary, Izzy, Anna and Owen are on their way home from the hospital when they meet Rita and Dennis. Rita is horrified when they tell her what Tina has done. The Windasses are equally upset to discover that Rita knew what was going through Tina's mind and Izzy starts to lose the plot. Rita keeps repeating how sorry she is so Anna tells her that if she's really sorry she's going to have to try and talk some sense into Tina otherwise she won't be held responsible for her actions.

Tracy comes home and is most put out to discover Peter and Carla are there, along with Deirdre and the children. She tells them she has work to do for her new job. "She means cold calling," explains Deirdre. Tracy insists it's called something else but it's clearly a sales job and for some reason Tracy is reluctant to divulge what exactly it is she has to sell.

Paul arrives home from work and Eileen looks mightily relieved to see him. Sean mentions the fire so Paul tells her he wasn't involved as he was called out to another shout but when Eileen's out of earshot Paul admits to Jason that he was there but, as he tells him, what Eileen doesn't know won't hurt her.

At the hospital, Tina is telling Tommy about all the things they'll need to buy for the baby. Tommy gently points out that Gary and Izzy will have already bought things themselves but she just can't see how this might be affecting them. Tina tells Tommy she knows how hard it will be for him when she takes home the baby and offers to let him go but Tommy is going to stand my her, no matter what. But just as Tommy is giving Tina a kiss, Rita and Dennis arrive. It looks as though Rita's on the warpath. "Have you totally taken leave of your senses?" Rita asks, angrily.

Rita is reading Tina the riot act but Tina is not about to be swayed. According to the law the baby is hers and she's not going to let the fact that biologically he belongs to Izzy and Gary worry her. She says that when she went into this she didn't know Gary and Izzy were going to split up and then lists all the Windass family's failings and says she's not going to let the baby go there. Rita thinks Tina is just looking for excuses.

Round at Anna's they're all in shock. Owen says he feels like going to the hospital and just grabbing the baby while Anna's anger is all directed towards Tina. She says if she wanted a baby that much she should have had one of her own. Gary tells them that he and Izzy are going out for a walk.

In the Rovers, Stella is attempting to have a drink with her family but it's all a bit tense what with catty remarks from Gloria and Leanne unable to conceal her dislike of Karl. Dev comes over to the bar and Leanne is interested to hear his latest theory that Sunita may have heard the smoke alarm which was the reason she went into the Rovers on the night of the fire. Karl says that Dev will be claiming next that Sunita was dumped in the pub by aliens.

Eileen can't eat her supper and Sean says it's because she's exhausted. Paul finally realises what everyone else saw weeks ago: Eileen is a nervous wreck. They need to talk, so Sean and Jason leave them to it and go to the pub. Eileen admits to Paul that she's been to the doctor and got some sleeping tablets but he says that's not the solution. They need to do something about the problem although he's not too sure what.

In desperation, Tracy has set up her phone and laptop in Amy's bedroom but Peter, Carla and Deirdre are listening outside the door. There's much hilarity when they discover that Tracy is working for Bogden's Bathrooms and her job involves selling toilets. Peter can't resist telling her that her customers don't want to spend a penny while Deirdre informs Tracy she's looking rather flushed.

In the Rovers, Leanne and Nick are making their excuses to leave when Sean and Jason arrive. They mention that they've just seen Dev who's been going on about how Sunita couldn't possibly have started the fire. Stella says that what if it's true and that she really was trying to help? Her mother tells her not to let it get to her and Karl agrees, telling Stella she needs to put all that stuff out of her head. Karl then adds he's just going out for some air.

Meanwhile in the Bistro, Maria arrives for her meeting with Marcus. She skirts round the table warily, looking like she thanks Marcus is about to attack her. When he asks what she'd like to eat Maria asks if they could just get on with it. "Sussed," says Marcus as he reaches behind him and then places a gift-wrapped present on the table. It seems that Audrey was right after all. Marcus's gift is a silver heart shaped necklace. He tells Maria that he would no more look at another man than she would, that he loves her and that from now on the "G" word is banned. Maria promises that, in return, she'll stop being so paranoid.

Karl goes round to see Dev and give him a bit of "helpful" advice. He tells Dev that he should stop going on about Sunita because some people are starting to think he's a bit unhinged. But Dev just wants to be left alone with his bottle of whiskey.

Gary and Izzy are out in the street when Tommy and Tina arrive home with Rita and Dennis. Rita quickly tries to usher the others inside but not before Izzy begins to get hysterical. Tina tells her she's sorry, she didn't mean to hurt her, but she had no choice. She says the moment she held the baby she knew she loved him. "I thought you were my friend. I trusted you," sobs Izzy as Gary pounds on Rita's front door in frustration.

Wednesday 12 June

Izzy sees Tina in the Street and calls out, she wants to talk. Tina, however, doesn't want to get involved in another slanging match and hurries away.

A rather fraught Dev goes into the pub, he wants to speak to Stella. Gloria and Karl are setting up for the day, and Gloria tells him that Stella has just nipped out. Dev pulls out his paper time line of Sunita's last day, he thinks if he and Stella put their heads together they might come up with some answers. Gloria and Karl are against this, but Stella herself then appears and takes him to sit down and go through it.

Anna is ranting on about Tina, while Izzy gets the phone book and starts looking up solicitors. They know that Tina has all the rights, but Izzy wants to find someone who can tell them their right, and possibly find some loopholes.

Back in the pub, Dev is chattering ninety to the dozen, and then tells Stella he thinks the pub keys were planted in Sunita's drawer. He suddenly leaps up, if he can find the inventory the hospital gave him listing Sunita's possessions when she was admitted, and the keys aren't on it, then he will know the keys were planted.

Over at Eileen's, Paul is still upset that Eileen was going to take sleeping pills. He suggests she talks to a professional. Just then there's a knock on the door, it's a couple with a small boy who want to thank Paul for saving the boy's life. Eileen looks stunned.

In the cafe, Tracy is moaning to Rob about her telesales job, but she's not jacking it in. He's off to his new job, but won't tell her what it is.

Tina, Tommy, Rita and Dennis have arrived at the hospital, and Rita and Tina are gazing at the baby, Tina tells Rita that he's doing well now and has put on weight. Rita warns her about the hard work to come, and says that there will be people who say that she stole another woman's baby and flaunted him under her nose.

Back at Eileen's, it's being spelled out exactly what Paul did and the risk he took in saving the boy. The woman tells Eileen that she's got a very special man. Eileen says that she knows.

Tina tells Rita that she's going by instinct, and her instinct is telling her she can do a better job with the baby than Izzy. She doesn't want to see him passed from pillar to post round the Windass family. She thinks it will be Anna raising this baby, whose own son went off the rails.

Izzy and Gary are back from seeing a solicitor. They've been told that even if they take Tina to court they don't stand a chance. She has got a decent flat and she's in a relationship. Izzy isn't going to let it lie, however, she says she'll dig up dirt about Tina and find a reason why she's not a fit mother. If the law won't protect her family she'll do it herself.

Mary and the children arrive at Dev's to find him furiously tipping boxes of papers and letters all over the place, searching for the inventory that he can't find. He shouts at Mary, blaming her. She hastily sends the children upstairs and turns and goes back out of the front door.

David goes into the Bistro with a present for Kylie. It's a pregnancy pillow, she's not been sleeping lately. She thanks him with a kiss, and gets back to work. After he's left, Nick comments to Kylie that David really loves her. “Yes,” she says, “he does.”

Mary rushes into the pub and tells Stella and Karl that Dev is acting strangely. “Unhinged,” says Karl. Mary thinks the pressure must be getting to him.

A dejected Izzy tells Anna that this baby was her only chance. She can't put her body through pregnancy again, she couldn't bear another miscarriage, and adoption is out. She doesn't want another baby, she just wants Jake. Anna gets up, she tells Izzy to ring her dad and tell him she's on her way, and goes out of the door.

Karl takes Mary back round to Dev's, offering to help. Suddenly Dev is jubilant, he's found the inventory. He starts to read it out, and Karl looks worried. “Gold ring, lipstick, wristwatch....” Dev begins, and then, “set of keys......” Karl can't seem to believe it and has to check for himself, almost laughing as he reads it. “Well, now it's time to put a stop to all this,” he says. Mary tells him he's got post there that hasn't been opened, he needs to start dealing with the here and now. Dev agrees that he will, and gets Mary to take the children out for pizza. When she's gone he tells Karl that this means nothing, it's simply a dead end and he will pick up the trail somewhere else.

A shocked Eileen is asking Paul why he never told her about rescuing the boy. She feels ashamed that he couldn't tell her and from now on he must come home and talk about his job, good or bad. She needs to start being grateful that he does what he does. She's proud of him.

Tina gets out of Rita's car in front of her flat, to find Owen changing the lock and Anna bringing all her stuff out in bin bags.

Kylie tells Nick that David does so much for her, she wants to take him away for a weekend. He says if she tells him when she wants to go he'll change the work rota. Just then David comes in, but Kylie quickly changes the subject.

Rob comes in to the Bistro and tells Tracy that he got the job. It's debt recovery. She's pleased.

Izzy and Gary come along just as Tina is picking up her things. Izzy warns Tommy that Tina is using him, to make her look settled in court, and that the baby has a family. She tells him that as soon as Tina gets what she wants, she'll dump him, just like she did them. As Tina starts to put her things in Rita's car, Anna asks Rita if Tina's had her hands on Rita's cheque book yet? Then she says that although Tina thinks she's saving the baby from a broken home, she should have a look round, she's made them stronger.

Friday 14 June

Gail and Kylie work companionably in the kitchen discussing the proposed romantic break for Kylie and David. David and Max come down and David is sarcastic about Kylie's choice of filling for Max's lunch sandwich.

Rita assures Tina and Tommy that they're not in the way. Tina says they'll have to find somewhere else to live once the baby comes home - that's only fair. Rita jokes that a baby won't keep her awake as much as Dennis's snoring and then tells Tina that the best way she can show her thanks is by letting Rita see her smile more often. When Tina and Tommy have left the flat, Dennis tells Rita that Tina's got a point - they're both a bit old to have their lives disrupted by a new baby. Rita agrees that Tina's in a mess. And though it's of her own making, she means the world to Rita and Rita's going to stand by her, no matter what Owen and Anna and their children say.

Out in the street, Tina and Tommy have been seen by that very clan. Izzy wants to just put her head down and ignore them but Anna and Gary metaphorically spit and hiss at them. Once Tina and Tommy have walked away, Gary tells Anna he thinks Tommy believes Tina's made the wrong decision and they should get him onside. But Anna says the person who can change Tina's mind is Tina.

There's a mystery at the cafe. Someone's been in during the night and arranged all the condiments in perfect size order. Sylvia suggests it was Anna but Roy says order isn't really Anna's thing - she's the Jackson Pollock of the griddle. Beth suggests it's a ghost. Brian talks about poltergeists. But Roy refuses to listen to either of them. He doesn't believe in the supernatural.

Steve sees Eileen breakfasting with Paul and reminds her she's due at work in three minutes. She bites his head off and he goes out. Paul suggests she was a bit hard but she says Steve deserved it. "He spends most of his working life asleep in lay-bys!" (That's rest areas to our NZ subscribers) She tells Paul she's fretting over fretting. Meeting that rescued child has made her realise how important Paul's work is. She's determined to sort out her head.

There's niggling in the pub and when Gloria's niggle is to have a go at Stella for not washing up the glasses, Stella explodes and tells her she never does any work. Gossipping with the grey mafia and downing G&Ts does not constitute a day's graft. "You're a flaming liability!" Gloria flounces off and a slightly repentant Stella tells Karl she just needs more sleep.

Roy's still making his point that the mystery will be solved by resorting to facts, not the supernatural. Steve and Dev are at a table and Steve tells Dev the fact is the pub keys were on the inventory. Dev is adamant that if Sunita set the fire she wouldn't have stayed in the pub. Roy overhears and congratulates Dev on wanting to stick to the facts. Steve explains that the keys were on the inventory of Sunita's belongings when she was admitted and the police found the keys. "The pub keys?" asks Roy. "I assume so," says Steve. Roy points out that this is a just a hypothesis and Dev suddenly realises someone could have switched the keys.

Kylie and Gail are in the street with Kylie finishing a phone call. She says all the cottages in her price range are booked up for months. Nick watches as Kylie looks totally disheartened.

Gary goes to the garage to see Tommy. He asks whether Tommy thinks Tina's doing the right thing. He asks Tommy how he would feel if Tina was in Izzy's place. Tommy says he has to respect Tina's decision. Tina comes first second and third to him.

Stella's in the bar with Karl. Gloria's nowhere to be seen. She's still sulking. Dev comes in all excited and tells them about the key-swapping theory. He's going to wait until Mary's there to look after the kids, then he's off to the police station. He's going to persuade them to re-interview the hospital staff. Karl thinks he's clutching at straws. He says Dev's too wound up to be safe on the roads so he offers to drive him to the police station and to be there as moral support. A happy Dev leaves the pub with a worried Karl staring after him.

Mary has fetched the kids from school. Aadi's been in a fight trying to defend his mum's reputation. Mary tells Dev the teacher is very concerned about the kids. Things are getting out of hand.

Stella doesn't think Dev's theory is far-fetched. She's worried that the real arsonist might still be out there somewhere (All together now: "He's behind you!"). She says she can't take the stress much longer. Karl promises her it will all be over soon.

Paul's gone to see Eileen at the taxi office and he's taken custard slices (aka vanilla slices/custard squares) with him. He thought she seemed stressed. Steve comes in and at Paul's prompting she gives Steve an apology, which he appreciates, and one of the custard slices, which he appreciates even more. Brian comes in. He's snaffled some of Julie's self-help books after overhearing Eileen in the cafe earlier. She's not that keen but accepts them. Steve scoffs - both the custard slice AND at the idea of self-help books.

Mary's got the children settled upstairs. Dev asks her to look after them while he goes to the police station but she questions his wisdom. She thinks Sunita would have wanted him to attend to the needs of the kids first. The children need to grieve and they can't do that while Dev's so involved in trying to prove Sunita's innocence. Dev protests that it must benefit the children if he keeps up the fight to prove their mother innocent. "Ah, but it's not you doing the fighting," Mary points out. She says encouraging the children to believe in their mother's innocence is only making them the target of bullies. She says she'll take the kids to the cinema to give Dev time to think or to go to the police station - whichever he decides.

In the pub, Hayley's worrying about the goings on in the cafe. Beth's still sure it's a ghost and Gloria backs her up. While Hayley tries to explain to Beth that there must be a logical explanation, Gloria tells Karl he's drinking too much and asks what's wrong but he won't say. He walks outside just in time to see Mary pass with the children on their way to the cinema.

Nick meets Kylie in the street and they talk about her idea of booking a cottage. He tells her to find a nice cottage and he'll cover the extra cost. This could be the last chance Kylie and David have of a romantic break away. Kylie accepts his offer and gives him a thank-you kiss. Of course, David sees this.

In the cafe, Gary tells Anna about his conversation with Tommy. Izzy comes in for a private word with Gary. She tells him they have to present the best front possible if the custody battle ends up in court so she wants him to move back in. He'll be sleeping in the spare room but the court will see them as settled and stable.

Tina's been to the hospital to see the baby and tells Rita she's sure he recognises her. Tina plans to start work in the pub again. She says she might have to pay lawyers so she needs the money. She says she saw the look on Izzy's face earlier. She never meant to hurt Izzy like this. Rita says that she has and now she has to find a way of living with that. In court the other side will play on any vulnerability. She tells Tina to go and have a lie down. When she's gone, Tommy tells Rita and Dennis about his conversation with Gary. Dennis suddenly realises that both Rita and Tommy think Tina's made the wrong decision. They say they want to back her but he says that sort of blind loyalty is doing Tina no favours at all.

Karl's in the ginnel. He puts on gloves (uh oh) and turns away as Paul comes out to the bins. Then he heads to Dev's back door. Inside, Dev looks at the timeline and other paperwork he's gathered to try to clear Sunita's name. Paul knocks on the back door and Dev lets him in. He asks whether Dev's ready to go to the copshop. Dev slumps on the sofa, telling Karl that everyone around him thinks he's doing the wrong thing. Karl, who is standing behind the sofa, tells him his friends just want the best for him. Dev asks how it can be best to have the mother of his children damned by a lie. As Dev gets more upset, Karl lifts one of Aadi's golf trophies and grips it in his gloved hands.

Taking up where we left off in the last episode, we are in Dev's living room, and Karl is crouched behind him, golf trophy in hand, frantically begging Dev to stop all this, pleading with him so he doesn't have to do what he knows he has to do to prevent it going any further. He screams at him to reconsider, telling him no matter what he does, he is not going to make Sunita look any better, the kids have already lost her, and - leaning menacingly over him shouts, "If you don't stop, they might be in danger of losing you as well!"

Tina is awake in the bedroom, and is listening to them all talking in the living room, discussing how they all think she is making a mistake, but will support her because they love her. She comes out, forcing a smile, and tells them she is off to the hospital. Tommy tells her he will go with her, but she insists on going alone.

We are now back with Dev and Karl, and Dev notices Karl is holding Aadi's trophy, but mistakenly believes he has picked it up to admire it. Karl doesn't let up, he talks and talks to Dev, pointing out he is doing his children no favours by keeping up the crusade. After getting the same lecture from Mary earlier. Dev is starting to weaken in his resolve, and tells him he is right, and will drop it. He pats Karl on the hand, telling him he is a very good friend, then asks him why he is wearing gloves. Karl stutters that he has eczema, and Dev questions it no further.

Next we are treated to Gail, dancing round the living room singing "Daddy I'm falling for a monster", then plonks herself down next to a startled Kylie on the sofa, and says in a deep voice "He's got a black heart". I assume it is a well known song in the UK, but am afraid it is totally lost on me, LOL!! Anyway, apparently it's one of Gail's favourite songs, well it would be, she's fallen for a few monsters in her time hasn't she? She looks into Kylie's lap at the brochure she is perusing of a perfect cottage which also has a jacuzzi called the 'love tub'. Gail then spots the cost, and is taken aback, telling her there is no way she can afford it. Kylie tells her she has someone helping her out. "Who? Richard Branson?" asks Gail. Kylie tells her the benefactor is Nick, but before she can ask her if she is crazy, David arrives home and the brochure is hurriedly hidden, but doesn't go unnoticed by David. He wants to know what it is, and is told it's just something she printed off the internet for Gail. He of course wants to know what, so Gail tells him it's 'Twenty things to do with olives' LOL!! Trust Jonathan Harvey not to forget about the cupboards full of olives in Gail's house! Kylie backs her up, and David lets it go, but looks as if he doesn't really believe them.

Karl is walking back down the ginnel from Dev's and the whole episode must have really unnerved him, because he suddenly throws up. (Oh dear, it seems he doesn't have the stomach for this murdering malarkey does he?) Beth and Craig come around the corner, she is teaching her son what to do if their rubbish bin is full, you just use someone else's. They notice Karl bringing up his last meal, and Beth shrugs, saying he must have eaten a dodgy prawn or summat.

In the Rovers the topic of conversation is revolving around Tina and what she is doing to Gary and Izzy. Tommy is agreeing with Tyrone, but feels there is nothing he can do. Deirdre gets in her two penn'orth, saying she thinks it's disgusting what she's doing. Tommy of course feels the need to defend Tina, and tells her he doesn't want her opinion. She snaps back that she doesn't care, she is going to give it anyway, and tells him it's wrong, it's not her baby and shouldn't be keeping it. The Windasses come in at that point, and she apologises to them. They tell her no apologies are necessary, she is talking perfect sense, and buy her a drink. Gloria pipes up that she was mentally agreeing with Deirdre, but her ruse didn't work, because Stella tells them she doesn't need a free drink. Tommy is looking very uncomfortable, and Tyrone asks if he would like to go somewhere else. He tells him no, because it's something he is going to have to get used to.

Next is a very peculiar conversation. Gloria asks Deirdre if she has had her hair done differently, and is told she hasn't. She goes on to tell her that whenever she thinks of her, she always thinks of her with a perm. Deirdre tells her she hasn't had a perm for years. (No she hasn't, and when she had, neither Gloria, or Stella knew her - let's not forget writers that this family is very new to Weatherfield - some might even call them interlopers, but not me of course! ;-) )

Karl arrives home, and Stella goes to kiss him, but he fobs her off. She notices he is shaking, and he explains that away by saying it's all been upsetting talking to Dev. He tells them Dev is feeling a little better, and is no longer going to the police. Gloria asks him how he is, whether he too has calmed down, and he assures her he has. He quickly goes through to the back and wipes his mouth, watched from the doorway by a puzzled Gloria.

Beth and Craig are heading into Roy's Rolls, and she is bent on having a little fun. Sylvia tries to get them out, saying they are just closing, but Beth is not to be deterred. She pulls out her phone, telling Roy she has a new app that can detect ectoplasm. Waving the phone around, she tells them it feels 'dead haunted' to her, and asks if anyone has ever died on their toilet. Sylvia replies they haven't, but if she would care to bob through, it can be arranged.

Roy has had enough, and demands they leave, but she is just getting started. She tells him the app is detecting a ghostly presence on the wall tiles - or maybe it's just grease. Roy loses his temper, and tells her there is no way a phone could possibly detect ectoplasm when it doesn't exist. (I am having a little trouble swallowing this storyline about Roy not believing in the paranormal. Back in March 1996 an update written by Adrian Carter reads "Meanwhile in the Rovers Jack and Vera were in the bar investigating strange noises from the cellar. The sound according to Jack was that akin to a rat, or perhaps cockroaches. Vera, of course, instantly supposed it to be something of a supernatural nature with shades of the Ivy haunting coming back into play. The culprit turned out to be Roy who whilst the pub was open had taken the opportunity to do a spot of impromptu ghost hunting in Rovers cellar. His conclusion was that whilst there was nothing to see in regular ghostly terms. There was he said a possibility of a non-standard invisible ghost (it was explained in more complex terms than that but I'll be damned if I'm typing all that out). So you see Roy not only believed in ghosts back then, but regarded himself as somewhat an expert on the paranormal - a case once again of the writers not knowing their history!)

Anyway, Beth can see she has pushed Roy too far, and makes a hasty exit along with her amused son.

Steve comes into the cab office to find Eileen immersed in a book. It's a self-help book, and with a degree of sarcasm, she reads Steve a passage from it. He asks if she has any air freshener as he has just had a very smelly bloke in the cab. She smiles serenely and tells him he should be looking for the positive in the situation, Steve is not impressed, and points out he has a stinking cab because he had a very drunk and smelly individual along for a ride, and there is nothing positive about that. She smiles sweetly and tells him "But he was alive". She stops teasing him and tells him the book has taught her one thing, that she needs to get some help. Seriously she tells him the fire service offers counselling for staff and their relatives, and she has decided to get some.

Tina is leaning over the incubator talking to the baby. Smiling at him, she tells him Grandpa would have loved him, and goes on to say he used to sing her a lullaby when she was a baby. She promptly breaks into a quiet rendition of 'Hush Little Baby', and tells the little fellow at the end of it that she doesn't know what a mockingbird is either. This is probably because the bird, as well as the lullaby is American, and according to Wikepedia, Mockingbirds are a group of New World passerine birds from the Mimidae family. They are best known for the habit of some species mimicking the songs of other birds and the sounds of insects and amphibians, often loudly and in rapid succession. So now we know more than Tina and the baby!

Watched by a concerned Gloria from the doorway, Karl downs a stiff brandy, and leans head first into the wall. She tells him she knows something is wrong, and demands he tells her what it is. She asks if he is gambling again, or it's possibly another woman. He tells her it's not as simple as that would be. She asks him what he has done, and he tells her nothing, and that's the mad thing, but came so close. Obviously she wants to know more now, so sits down beside him to get the full story. He is close to tears and shaking, telling her it never leaves you, and he is so scared. She is confused, and asks him if he is talking about the fire, is he having flashbacks? Obviously thankful she has hit on a pretty good reason to cover the real reason for his distress, he tells her it is, he is having flashbacks. Gloria is full of sympathy, telling him it must be hell for him living there if that is how it is affecting him. He tells her he is doing it for Stella, he knows how much the pub means to her. She throws her arms around him and hugs him, telling him she is so sorry it is so bad for him, and encourages him to be strong.

Mary and the children arrive home. She sends them upstairs to get into their pyjamas and to brush all the pic 'n mix out of their teeth, then they can come down and tell their father all about the film they just saw. A tearful Dev thanks her, and tells her he doesn't know what he would do without her. He goes on to say he has decided to drop all this investigation, and wouldn't be going to the police.

In the Rovers the Windass clan are giving the evil eye to Tommy who is obliviously playing a game of darts with Tyrone. Rita walks by and says a cool hello to Anna, who replies in the same tone. Izzy can't stand it, saying she has spent her whole life trying to get people not to feel sorry for her, now she is getting nothing but pity, making her feel she should have victim tattooed on her forehead. Tina comes in and walks over to Rita and Dennis. Rita asks her how the baby is, and Tina hesitates, looking over at the Windass table. Anna yells at her to tell Rita how Gary and Izzy's baby is, "You know, the one you stole!", she shouts. Tina tries ignoring Anna, and tells Rita he is doing well, in fact he smiled at her today. Anna shouts over that she is being ridiculous, as he is too young to smile.

Tyrone is getting uncomfortable, telling Tommy they should have gone somewhere else. Tina apologises to the Windasses, saying she didn't intend to rub their noses in it. Izzy replies that doing that is just a by product of her selfishness. Saying that, Izzy has had enough, and wants to leave. Tommy comes over and tells them that Tina didn't plan any of this. Gary snaps back that they had plans, until Tina threw them in the bin. Tommy tells him he should have thought about that before they split up. "Actually", says Gary, "We are back together now". Tina looks shocked, "Oh 'eck" says Rita. Izzy confirms it, and tells Tina they plan to fight her every step of the way.

Tina tries to smooth things over by saying she was probably a bit hasty when she banned them from seeing Joe. There is a deathly hush in the Rovers as Tina's words sink in. Izzy is horrified that she would change his name, as is Gary. Deirdre gets in her two penn'orth by saying "Named him after her bonkers Dad by the sound of it". Tina turns and the look in her eyes should have permed Deirdre's hair back up nicely by rights. However, Stella decided a voice of reason is called for, and tells Tina to go home as she doesn't like the look of where this is heading. Tina points out that she works there, but Stella tells her she doesn't tonight. The Windass clan are leaving anyway, saying they don't want to breath the same air as Tina.

Around the dinner table, Sylvia is relating a tale told to her by Emily Bishop. She relates that Emily had woken up one night to find a man sitting on the end of her bed. She was convinced it was a ghost, but Sylvia is more of the opinion it was probably Norris, and has him pegged as one of those voyeurs who enjoys watching people sleeping.

Roy has had enough of all this ghost talk, and doesn't understand the business of Beth's app. Sylvia assures him there was no app, she was just winding him up. That just upsets Roy all the more, realising he is being ridiculed once again. Sylvia assures him there is nothing wrong with being unique, "Look at Alma Cogan", she says. (Alma Cogan? I remember her from the early 60's, and don't remember her being mockingly unique! She sadly died of ovarian cancer at age 34) Anyway, her words did nothing to calm Roy down, so she suggests they all go to the Rovers for a sherry. Roy reminds her he doesn't drink. "Then start!", retorts his mother.

We are back in the Rovers now, and in comes Steve and Eileen. Deirdre tells them she was just on her way out, but as they are there she will stay for a bit, and Steve knows this is his cue to add her drink to the round. Everyone is surprised to hear Eileen order a pineapple juice and soda for herself. Even when Steve offers to stick a vodka in it, she doesn't back down, telling everyone she is trying to take control of her feelings. "Oh how wonderful", gushes Mary, who seems to have appeared from nowhere.

David is grilling Gail as to what the piece of paper was that Kylie had hidden earlier. She tells him again it is '20 things to do with olives', but he is not buying it, telling her she hates olives. He is worried though, and asks her if she would tell him if the paper was from the hospital, and there was something wrong with the baby. Kylie chimes in from the sofa that she can hear everything he is saying, so David tells her in turn to show him the paper. Refusing, she assures him it wasn't from the hospital, and there is nothing wrong, and tells him again it was about olives. Taking her cue, Gail tells them she thinks she will have an olive right now, and gets one of the hundred jars from the cupboard, and actually manages to eat one for David's benefit.

Stella finds Karl smoking in the back yard, telling him it's vile, asks if that is why he refused to kiss her earlier. He nods his head. She can tell something is wrong, but he won't share it with her. She tells him to remember he can tell her anything - anything at all, and heads back inside.

Aadi and Asha are now in their pyjamas and have come downstairs to talk to their father. He tells them he has something very important to say, and goes on to say that although they all know their mother didn't start the fire, and they all know she loves them very much, they must all keep it to themselves from now on, and they must concentrate on moving forward as a family. Asha wants to know if he is going to stop trying to find out what really happened, and he tells her he is. Aadi questions this, saying he had earlier told them the truth was very important. Dev responds that it is important, and the truth will always come out in the end. He then packs them off to bed. As Aadi is leaving he notices his trophy has been moved, and wants to know why. Dev doesn't say, just puts it back in its rightful place.

Alone, he once again looks at his collection of paperwork, and taking a deep breath puts it all in the bin, even though you can see by his face it's the last thing he wants to do.

The topic of conversation in Rita's flat is of course the baby and Tina's decision. It is obviously bothering Tina a lot that she has become such an outcast in the Street. Dennis wants to know how Tommy feels about it all, and he doesn't have a lot to offer, saying he hates her being attacked everywhere she goes, but will back her on anything she wants. Rita asks Tina a direct question, pointing out that the reasons she made that decision have changed, i.e. he wouldn't have a stable home with Gary and Izzy, but they now appear to be making a go of it, does she feel the same? Tina gets defensive, saying she feels stronger than ever that she has made the right decision, as she doesn't trust them to stay together - and besides, he's her baby and she's keeping him. Rita quietly, but firmly points out he is her baby with their genes. Upset and angry now, Tina flies off the handle, saying she can give him as good a life as anybody, and if they don't want to support her, they can all go to hell! With that she storms out of the room. The scene ends with Rita rolling her eyes to the ceiling and swallowing a good stiff drink.

Roy sets up the cafe for the day and notices that the front door is open. Outside the only thing stirring are the birds. Hayley startles him from behind. Roy worries that they've been burgled and they both rush back inside to check the till (which would have been emptied out by Roy the night before, wouldn't it?)

David catches Kylie and Gail whispering about the surprise night away but they cover up. David catches the lie and worries that there's something wrong with the baby. He knows they're up to something but leaves the house with Max. Kylie tells Gail she's enjoying keeping David in the dark and will spring the surprise on him just before the taxi arrives.

Roy affirms that there is no money missing from the till and is sure he locked up the night before. Roy thinks the door should have been opened from the inside. Sylvia states that there are a few of the neighbours that he's upset lately and perhaps one of them is playing a trick on Roy.

Outside the shop, Nick has a joke with Sophie. Behind them, Dev comes out with the twins, drilling them on spelling. Karl overhears and admires their spelling expertise. Dev says he's feeling pretty good and thanks Karl for what he said to him to give him pause for thought. Dev agrees he was driving himself mad with unanswered questions.

Michelle is organizing breakfast, who wants what? Katy asks for toast and she'll do hard boiled eggs and soldiers for Joseph. They're out of bread and Steve thinks he'll just go the the cafe. Michelle requests bread and milk on his way back and Ryan asks for some cans of ale (for later, I assume!) but hasn't got the cash to pay for it. He promises to go to the bank later. Steve catches a whiff of a baby needing his nappy changed and leaves poste-haste.

Tina is looking to come back to work. Stella questions her but Tina says it's all covered. Baby's still in hospital and when he comes out, she is requesting just evening work when Tommy can babysit unless, of course, she can have some maternity leave on full pay. Stella promises to sort something out for the shifts and Gloria worries that there will be trouble in the pub when "that lot" come in and see her working there. Tina aggrees to work in the afternoon. Stella takes her into the back for a look round seeing as they've all moved back in now.

In the cab office, Michelle is sharing a cuppa with Steve who's griping about the overcrowding in the flat. He doesn't want to be the one to talk to Ryan about the extended guests but Michelle thinks it will be better coming from him than from her.

Karl is in the back yard of the pub shifting bottles. Stella finds him there and compliments him on the tidy cellar and says Tina's come back. She also asks him what he said to Dev who was singing Karl's praises to her. He seems distracted and says he's thinking about death. She gathers him into her arms.

Kylie asks Leanne if she can go home early to pack before their overnight trip. Leanne agrees to a half hour early which is an hour later than she wants so when Nick arrives, Kylie asks him. He cheerfully agrees and argues when Leanne objects. David arrives and asks her to lunch but she's already said she'd work through due to getting off early. David tries to get out of Nick what Kylie's keeping secret from him but he denies knowing anything. Nick assures him there's nothing to worry about but because David is so annoyed, Nick says that Kylie is organizing a nice surprise but he won't say more than that. He tries to bluff it out of Kylie but she doesn't bite.

Roy is in the flat and is peering throught he net curtains down to the street while Sylvia heats up some soup. She leaves Hayley to fuss over Roy. She doesn't think anyone is trying to mess with his head but he can't think of any other explanation.

Tina is getting David to do her hair. Audrey brings up the mystery, and how David is getting antsy. He says whatever it is, Nick has said Kylie has been planning it for awhile. Audrey is in on it too, from the sound of it but nobody is revealing anything to an increasingly tetchy David.

Steve finds Ryan building a massive sandwich and eyes it with lust. Steve opens a little door to discussion and Ryan leaps through it complaining about the baby's inhospitable hours and the overcrowding. He feels like he doesn't have a choice, now that Katy's in house. Steve advises that whatever he wants, let the woman think it's her choice. It doesn't seem to make a lot of sense to Ryan.

Tina shows Stella baby pictures on her phone and reminds her the baby's name is Joe now. Owen, Izzy and Gary come in, glaring at Tina behind the bar. Owen and Gary don't want to stay but Izzy is not leaving. Owen reminds Stella she owes a last two thousand and Tina owes him 15 grand. Stella reminds the men she doesn't want any trouble but he keeps needling Tina about the money and asking if she's heard from their solicitor.

David asks why his name is removed from the appointment book for tomorrow and she tries to gloss over it but he pushes. Where is he going? Where is Kylie taking him? He nags and nags but she holds out so far.

Katy and Ryan come in and have been discussing living arrangements from the sound of it. Steve listens in with interest as Katy suggests her dad's flat which is now empty. She's assuming the three of them will live there together, but Ryan, at the prospect of a messy flat and baby that screams at 3 a.m. looks ill. Steve tucks into a massive sandwich.

Tina gripes to Tommy about having to pay Owen back. She thinks she'll need every penny if they're fighting her in course for HER baby! Tommy tries to defend Owen wanting his money back.

Michelle is picking up tea in the corner shop for the factory. They have a mildly run of the mill discussion about petty cash. David comes in to ask after the cost of flowers. Too high. He goes back out and picks a smaller bunch and buys them. The women are impressed he's buying Kylie flowers "just because".

In the pub, Steve is telling Dev and Karl about Ryan's dilemma. Karl asks after the kids' spelling test and Steve notices that Dev is feeling perkier. Dev puts it down to Karl. Stella watches them with approval from the bar. Tina comes in and approaches the Windass/Armstrongs and tells them she's not paying the money back and is using it for court costs. That doesn't go over well. She wonders why they can't just be polite after that and storms out, a shouting Gary and Izzy behind her.

David arrives home to an empty house and is about to go upstairs when Kylie and Gail come in so he skips up the steps further so he can eavesdrop on their conversation. At first it's just small talk about Max and kids. Kylie calls up for David but he stays silent. Kylie thanks Gail for offering to mind Max. David's radar goes up when Gail asks if Kylie is doing this out of guilt. Course not, she denies. David moves closer to the stairwell. Kylie is grateful David doesn't "know" and Gail hopes he never does. Uh oh.

But first, we're in the back room of the pub where Leanne has arrived with Stella. Stella has asked Leanne there to tell her something. She's set a wedding date and wanted Leanne to be the first to kno.

In a wholly contrived explanation scene, Gail tells Kylie that what happened between she and Nick stays in the past, gone and forgotten. Kylie promises it was only the one night and will never happen again. David sinks down to sit on the step. Gail thinks she can smell flowers. Not likely, Kylie mumbles. Gail affirms they should stop talking about it altogether (Makes a change from her constantly sniping at the pair of them ever since she found out). Kylie says she regrets all of it but wishes it hadn't happened on David's birthday. Gail scolds her. She slept with David's brother, it's despicable any day of the week. And there we have it folks, they've laid it all out for David who now knows the secret. He looks stunned and shattered, eyes filling up with tears as he hears Gail and Kylie talk about how they hope the baby is David's. Kylie follows Gail out to the back yard where she's going to peg out the laundry so David makes his escape out the front door.

David is walking along the cobbles in a daze, clutching the bunch of flowers which had been intended for Kylie. He slumps down onto a bench and hurls them into a bin.

In the Rovers Karl is busy proving his worth but Stella is keen to give him the night off which makes Gloria suspicious that her daughter must be up to something.

Back out in the street Nick and Leanne see David moping on the bench. Nick assures him that he's going to love Kylie's surprise and adds that she's quite a girl - which he almost certainly wouldn't have said had he known what David now knows ...

Next to come along is Stella who asks Leanne if she'll join her in the Rovers later when she's going to announce that she wants to set a date for the wedding. But Leanne can't bring herself to be there in view of her feelings towards Karl.

Over the road, Hayley and Sylvia are dragging a reluctant Roy in the direction of the Rovers. They insist he needs a drink to take his mind off the strange goings-on in the café but he doesn't look convinced.

Round at Gail's, Kylie is explaining to Max that she and David are going away for the weekend but at this rate it doesn't look like they're going anywhere. For some strange reason he hasn't come home and he's not answering Kylie's phone calls ...

But Kylie isn't the only one to be upset. As David nurses a pint in the Rovers, the incessant ringing of his mobile is driving Norris demented. But David isn't in any mood for pleasant conversation and offers to kill two birds with one stone by ramming his phone down Norris's throat.

The Croppers have arrived for their drink and when Beth spots them over by the bar she takes great delight in telling Tracy that there's a ghost in the café and someone's put the evil eye on Roy.

Over at the cab office, Ryan is talking to Steve about the Katy situation when Michelle arrives and wants to know what's going on. She can't believe it when she hears that Steve told Ryan that if you want a woman to do something you have to make them think it's their idea. Michelle asks why Ryan doesn't simply tell Katy the truth and he admits that he tried but he just doesn't know how.

Meanwhile, Norris is in the corner shop, bending Dev's ear about the menace of mobiles going off at inappropriate moments when, lo and behold, his own phone starts to ring. But it's only another modern-day irritation - someone is trying to sell him compensation for a whiplash injury. As Norris points out to the caller, he doesn't even own a car.

In the Rovers, David's still glowering over his pint, Gloria is furious that Tina's been allowed to be absent from her shift to visit the baby and Beth is winding up Roy by telling Tracy corny ghost jokes within his earshot. Suddenly it dawns on Roy: Beth is the one behind the strange goings-on in the café.

At the bar things start to kick off between Owen and Tina so David steps in. He tells Tina she gave birth to the baby so she shouldn't let anyone take him off her. "Then again, it depends whose it is," he adds cryptically before walking out. Gloria wonders what's rattled David's cage.

Stella's gone to see Dev to warn him that she's going to make an announcement that evening in the Rovers about setting a date for the wedding. She thinks Dev might not want to be there but he seems genuinely pleased for them.

Kylie's anxious to get off but David's still not come home when, talk of the devil he walks in. A relieved Kylie tells David she's got a surprise for him. "That's funny," he replies. "I've got one for you and all."

Kylie decides to go first with her news and tells David about their night away but, far from looking excited he asks if she wants to hear what he's got to say. But before he has a chance to say any more, Max comes down the stairs with perfect timing. He hands David a drawing he's done of the cottage and says that Mummy's taking him away because she loves him. David couldn't possibly say anything more in front of Max so he makes out that he simply thought Kylie was up to something with all the whispering that's been going on lately. He agrees to go away with Kylie. "A night alone with you - what could be better?" he asks with a menacing tone which seems to go right over Kylie and Gail's heads.

Katy goes into the pub to ask her dad a favour. She's delighted when he says she and Ryan can move into the builder's yard flat with Joseph - that is, until he adds that she'll have to pay rent. Owen puts Katy straight - she got herself into the mess so she'll have to pay the consequences. He adds that even if they could afford to pay rent, he wouldn't want "that waster" living on his property. Meanwhile Chesney is listening into the whole exchange from the adjacent booth.

David and Kylie are setting off for their night away and Leanne, Nick and Gail are waving them off. David looks as though he's off to his own funeral but still nobody else appears to notice.

Back in the Rovers Stella hands Owen a cheque for his final payment but his good mood is soon spoiled when she asks whether, in return, he could take the heat off Tina and Tommy. He can't believe his ears when Stella says they're finding it a bit hard going at the moment and asks if Owen could cut them some slack on the money they owe him. Anna says at least the cheque from Stella should help with the legal fees but Owen explains that it's a mere drop in the ocean. If necessary he'll sell the flat to pay for it but he's going to make sure he gets his grandson back if it's the last thing he does.

Katy arrives back at Michelle's with the news that they can't move into the flat and is annoyed with Ryan when he doesn't seem that bothered. But he's saved by the bell with Chesney arrives to drop off Joseph. Chesney admits to having overheard the conversation in the pub and says that if Katy isn't welcome at Michelle's he doesn't want Joseph living there. Katy says she only made out that was the case to persuade her father and Michelle confirms they're very welcome and they love having them around. "Don't we Steve?" she asks. "Yes we do," Steve agrees, hesitantly as he exchanges glances with Ryan.

Kylie and David arrive at the cottage. She's so busy being delighted that she still doesn't notice David's menacing look as he follows her inside ...

Back in Weatherfield Leanne's had a change of heart. She goes into the Rovers to tell Stella that she's decided to attend her "setting the wedding date announcement" drinks after all. But when she asks for an orange juice instead of a glass of wine, Gloria's imagination goes into overdrive and she tells Eva that she reckons Leanne's pregnant.

Back at the cottage, Kylie has magically produced a romantic meal for two but she can't work out why David's in such an odd mood. She tells him if he's worried about how much it's costing he needn't do because Nick helped her to pay for it. David's mood darkens still further. Kylie's distracted by the baby kicking so she gets David to have a feel. "That's your daughter. Everything you've ever wanted," says Kylie. "How could I ever forget?" asks David.

Michelle and Steve are off out but before they go, Michelle reassures Katy that she and the baby are welcome to stay for as long as they like. It's just a shame that Steve and Ryan don't seem to share her sentiments. As soon as they've gone Katy asks Ryan why he seemed relieved when he heard they couldn't move into her Dad's flat. He tries to make out that's how he always reacts to bad news but it's pretty obvious he's not thrilled with the situation he finds himself in.

In the Rovers Michelle and Steve are discussing their domestic arrangements. Michelle reckons that Steve is to blame for putting stupid ideas into Ryan's head and not having a proper word with him in the first place.

While this is going on, Stella is gathering her family around her for the big announcement. As they crack open the Champagne she tells them it's time she and Karl set a date for the wedding and adds that she doesn't know what she would have done without him these last few months. Gloria wants to know how long she has to plan her outfit and Stella tells her she's thinking of September. Leanne raises her glass along with the others but her face tells a different story.

We return to the cottage where David and Kylie are lying by the fire. She asks him once more what the problem is but he claims he's just tired. Kylie tells him that she loves him and just wants to make him happy. Kylie goes up to bed and David says he'll follow her up in a minute. As the title music plays we see him sitting alone with a dark and menacing expression on his face.

Wednesday 19 June

Kylie wakes up to find David sitting in the bedroom watching her. He says she looks so innocent, like a little girl. He then says he had a nightmare about the time he was trapped in the car when it went into the canal. She suggests he comes to bed, but he gets up and walks out of the room.

Back at home, Gail is planning on taking Max to the Red Rec to play football. There's no school because of a burst pipe. Nick wonders if it's wise, her exerting herself at her age and tells her to be careful.

Kylie tells David that he's in a really weird mood, and asks what's wrong. Eventually he tells her that he doesn't like surprises. She says she thought she was doing something romantic, she spent a lot of time planning it. She thought it would give them some time to themselves before the baby comes, but all he wants to do is sulk, and ruin it. She goes off to have a bath, and David opens the patio door and walks off.

In Michelle's flat, she's cross with Steve and Ryan. She asks her son if he has any idea what it's like to be a teenage single mum. (Of course he doesn't!) Ryan says he likes Katy..... Steve adds that Ryan's not keen on the whole package. “Did I ask for your opinion?” snaps Michelle, and tells Ryan that he's just stringing her along and it will only get worse, the longer he leaves it. Just then Katy comes out of the bedroom, and says that she knows it's a bit crowded with her and Joseph there, and she could always go back to No. 6. Ryan mutters that it might be for the best, as Michelle says they'll see how it goes. Then she says that she thinks she and Katy should have a night out down the pub, and Steve and Ryan can babysit.

David, wearing the hood up on his jacket, comes across a man pumping up his bike tyre on the footpath. He asks him to move the bike. The man asks if he could just go round, but David snaps that he doesn't want to go round, and asks again for him to shift the bike. The man protests that he'll only be a minute, but David doesn't want to wait a minute and picks up the bike, throws it out of the way and starts to walk on. “Are you insane?” shouts the man. David runs back to him, plunging his hand into his pocket as if he has a weapon in there. “Yeah,” he snarls, “are you?” The man hastily backs down and apologises, and David runs away. Back at the cottage, Kylie has got out of her bath and is looking for David.

Dennis and Rita are in the back room at the Kabin, having a heated discussion about whether Rita should use her life savings to help Tina in her fight for the baby. Norris is listening at the door when Tommy comes in. Norris urges him to be quiet, telling him about the row. He can't find out what it's about if Tommy keeps talking. In the back room, Rita tells Dennis that she's going to do all she can to help Tina, while he thinks she's a fool. Just then Tina comes into the shop and wants to know what Tommy and Norris are doing. Norris splutters that he's showing Tommy some new motor magazines.

David is still running angrily along the footpath. He comes face to face with a group of hikers who have to scatter to get out of his way.

Gail and Max have returned home, he wants to go swimming but Gail is exhausted.

It's lunch time, and Norris goes home to find Emily up a step ladder outside the house, cleaning windows. He can't wait to tell her that Rita's marriage is on the rocks, and then launches into a hasty recap of the situation regarding money, Tina and the baby. “So they've discussed this with you, have they?” enquires Emily, and, as Norris turns away, she then falls from the ladder, landing flat on her back on the cobbles. Norris shouts for help and Marcus comes running up, telling Norris to call an ambulance.

David arrives at the edge of a steep rocky interface, with a sheer drop below him. He stops, breathless, and looks down.

Emily is being strapped to a wheelchair and loaded into the ambulance by paramedics. Norris goes with her to the hospital.

David is still standing on the edge of the rocks, looking for all the world like he's about to jump, when suddenly his mobile phone rings. It's Max, telling him that Gail is useless at football, and wants to know when he's coming home. David says he'll be home tonight. “Bye, love you,” says Max. David responds that he loves him too. As he hangs up, he seems to come to his senses and steps back from the cliff edge.

Tommy and Tina are in the cafe. Tina has had a text from Rita, Emily hasn't broken anything, she might have a sprained ankle. Tina then asks him what was going on earlier with Norris. He tells her about Rita and Dennis having a row about Rita using her life savings to pay for Tina's legal fees.

Kylie has come out looking, and finds David sitting on a wall. She's worried, thinking he might have had another seizure. Then he says he thinks he's losing her and it's going to end in disaster. She tells him he's frightening her, and asks if they can please just go back to the house. He needs to ask her a question first – but he doesn't think he's going to like the answer. “Do you love me? Like, for real?” he asks. Kylie's face softens. She says she knows she's murder to live with and she does stupid things, but she loves him more than anything in the whole world. “Are we going to be ok?” he asks. She assures him they will be. He then asks her to promise that no matter what happens, she will never leave him. “Can you promise me that?” he says. “I promise,” she replies, then asks him if he loves her for real, because the way he's been acting over the last few days....... He stops her and tells her that he wouldn't be there if he didn't love her. Then they get up and walk back to the house.

In the pub, Stella and Karl are discussing wedding venues.

Michelle and Katy are sitting at a table discussing single motherhood. Michelle says she made loads of mistakes but her family were always there to help her out, and she urges Katy not to give up on her family, she's sure they won't give up on her. Just then Chesney comes in and goes over to the bar.

Emily is at home with a sprained ankle, and Rita and Dennis have arrived with flowers. Dennis asks if Norris had anything to do with the accident, as Marcus found him at the scene. Emily tells them it was an accident, Norris was so wrapped up with telling him silly stories he hardly noticed her fall. “What stories?” ask Rita and Dennis in unison, but Norris hurriedly changes the subject.

At the flat, Ryan is practicing nappy changing on a large teddy bear, with Steve giving instructions. Just then they realise that Joseph really does need changing, so Steve goes off to read the paper!

Katy goes over to Chesney and asks why he's spying on her. He denies it, and she tells him she's happy for the first time in a long time. Ryan's great, everything's great.

Tina tells Rita she knows what she's planning and she won't let her do it. Rita needs her money. Rita wants to know who told her, she thinks it was Dennis. Tina tells her that it was Tommy, through Norris – Dennis was the only one who kept his trap shut.

David and Kylie have returned home and Max gives him a big hug. Quietly, in the kitchen, Kylie tells Nick that David was weird. As Kylie then prepares to take Max up to bed, Nick offers David a drink in the Rovers.

Michelle and Katy get home to find it's all quiet, Joseph is asleep in his fresh, clean nappy. They send Steve and Ryan off to the pub, and then Michelle tells Katy that when she saw her talk to Chesney earlier it looked as though there was unfinished business there, it seems like they still have feelings for each other. Katy assures her that she doesn't want Chesney back, and she and Ryan are great. She's happy there.

Karl and Stella have agreed to get married in Weatherfield Register Office, and are hugging when Steve and Ryan walk in and order beer.

David and Nick are over at a table. Nick asks about his trip, David says it was emotional. Nick says he's worried about David, and he's sure something's not right. He asks if he's done something to upset David. David tells him that he loves Kylie more than his own family, and blood is not thicker than water. He finishes his beer and tells Nick he'll get them in, he owes him one. “In fact, after everything you've done, I owe you big time,” he says, “but I'll pay you back, I'll make sure I pay you back for everything.”

Friday 21 June

The Tour de France is interrupted to bring you this update:

It's Friday morning and David's standing looking up (well, glaring up, really) at the Victoria Court apartments.

Sean's had a late night and he's in the cafe seeking a fry-up. He asks Roy about the ghostly goings-on and it seems Roy's still convinced it's Beth. In fact, he's convinced she's got Sean to ask about it. Hayley's on her way to work and Roy pleads with her to keep her eye on Beth during the day. Hayley doesn't want to spy on her co-worker but Roy pleads and gives her a kiss in public.

Leanne, Nick and Simon come out of the apartment block and see David. Leanne asks how the surprise mini-break went and David replies by looking directly at Nick and making a lot of twin-meaninged remarks about how gobsmacked he was, how good Nick is at keeping secrets and how there was all that sneaking about and still David didn't know.

Emily's in her nightdress and has a big stick. It's not to sort out Norris with, though. She's seeing whether she can walk about, even though the doctor told her to rest her ankle or she'd do permanent damage. Norris says he's taken the day off work and Emily is appalled. She insists he go to work. She's got the phone if she needs help.

David's back home and his mother's in martyr mode. She's only the lodger but if she doesn't remember to get the groceries or do the washing then nobody else does. David had to go out for milk this morning because he didn't think last night that they might need some. He and Kylie never think ahead. . . Before I can do it, David lashes out at her, shouting about her wittering on. He DOES own the house and he doesn't have to put up with her. She's lucky to have a roof over her head, though he's thinking of chucking her out, along with her hideous little ornaments and cheap tat. He wants to get the house deep-cleaned and de-Gailed. When Gail starts her mantra of "But I'm your mother," David tells her she's a lousy mother and always has been. He had a miserable childhood. Gail wants to know why he's being so nasty to her. "Because I feel like it," he says. He's going to put up her rent.

Hayley's miles away in the factory when Beth tells her she looks like she's seen a ghost. Hayley becomes very assertive and tells Beth, "If I find out you're behind all this, you'll have me to answer to." Hayley tells Sean that Roy doesn't believe in ghosts and knows there's a rational explanation and is frustrated by not knowing what that is. Beth jokes that she's been haunting the cafe, "And I would have got away with it if not for those pesky kids." She and Kirk segue off into a Scooby Doo interlude.

David's sulking in the salon. When Audrey asks whether everything's all right with him and Kylie, he replies that they've had a massive argument and he's kicked Kylie out. He tells Audrey straight away that that's not true but she's still no closer to knowing what's troubling him.

Katy's in the cafe feeling sorry for herself but she gets little sympathy from Anna. Anna thinks Owen's doing the right thing in refusing to help Katy and Ryan get a place of their own. Chesney comes in to collect Joseph. He's taking the baby to the park.

Out in the street, Tina and Tommy cross paths with Izzy and Gary. Izzy wants to know how the baby is and are they going to the hospital. Tina promises to ring her with any news. She tells them she's finding this really difficult. Gary points out that she's got the power to stop it. He says they won't give up in a million years.

Kylie tells Nick about David being really weird while they were away. Nick thinks David was probably just miffed because Kylie organised something without him knowing about it. Gail tells them about David's mood this morning. She assumed he and Kylie had discussed evicting her. Kylie explains it's all news to her. They'll need Gail more than ever once the new baby arrives. Gail thought David had grown out of his bad behaviour, but today "it was like he went out for milk and came back his old self." Kylie tells her she'll deal with David.

In the cafe, while Beth and Kirk order Scooby snacks, Katy apologises to Chesney for her bad behaviour in the pub the other night. Sinead arrives and greets Chesney and Katy realises that Chesney and Sinead are taking Joseph to the park together. As they push Joseph out of the cafe, Beth leans over to Katy and says how sweet they look together.

Kylie arrives at the salon and interrupts while David's seeing to a client. She demands to know why David's been saying nasty things to Gail and he says Gail annoyed him. He still wants Gail out but Kylie insists Gail stays. He still plans to increase Gail's rent. Kylie thinks they should talk about things like this. David says sarcastically that Kylie and Gail obviously talk more. Audrey interrupts them and apologises to the client on David's behalf.

If there's anything good that's come from Emily's accident, it's that she's had the time to use the phone and contact people she'd been neglecting. She tells Rita she's just been talking to Spider. He also told her to take it easy. She tells Rita she feels as if God's just fired a warning shot across her bows. "I'm not getting any younger." "I am," says Rita. Dennis has given her a new lease on life. "What you need is a fella." Emily promises to call Daniel Craig once Rita's gone back to the Kabin.

Tina's at the incubator. She's not feeling good after seeing Izzy pleading for the slightest scrap of information. A nurse comes in - the doctor wonders whether it's time for Tina to try breastfeeding the baby. Tina agrees but Tommy is worried. A minute ago she was questioning everything and now she's agreeing to this. Doesn't she realise that breastfeeding will only bring her closer to the baby.

In the salon, Audrey tries to counsel David. She thinks he's just got the post-mini-break blues. He insists Gail doesn't care about him and she winds him up. "I feel like my head's going to explode, Gran." Audrey thinks he's got a lot on his plate - working there, becoming a dad. But he shouldn't take it out on Gail and Kylie.

Hayley arrives home and is cross-examined about what Beth did or didn't do during the day. Hayley says Beth denies everything. Roy wasn't expecting this sort of head-on approach. He decides the only way to find out what's going on is to sit up all night in the cafe.

In the bistro, Kylie and Nick toast each other in fruit juice to try out some new wine glasses. They discuss David's behaviour without realising he's come in and hears everything.

Rita's been telephoned by Tina and passes on the breastfeeding news to Izzy. She's annoyed. "He's our baby!" Rita expresses sympathy but Izzy says she' knows where Rita's loyalties really lie.

There's a contractor's van parked near Victoria Court and the front door to the apartment block is wedged open. David notices these two things, removes a sledgehammer from the van and goes inside.

Tina doesn't think her first attempt at breastfeeding has gone well but the nurse says it takes time.

The camera focuses on a picture of Simon and then on a front door. The door is smashed open and there's David with the sledgehammer. He looks at a picture of Nick and Leanne and looks around the flat.

More later!

Oh yes, David is having a hissy fit inside Nick and Leanne's flat. He is in his glory swinging the sledgehammer willy nilly and things are flying - dishes, the TV, photographs - you name it, it's on the floor in pieces.

Oblivious to the mayhem going on at home, Leanne is suggesting to Nick they take the night off with a bottle of wine. He is reluctant as they have no coverage for the Bistro. "Oh Kylie doesn't mind working an extra shift do you Kylie?" says Leanne. Nick asks her if she is sure she can manage. "Apparently", replies an obviously peeved Kylie.

Mary and Norris are fussy over Emily, who is not very appreciative of the attention. Mary is about to make her a nice dinner with even a jam Roly Poly for dessert - or 'Greedy Girls Girdle Buster' as it was known in Mary's house, but she tells her she doesn't have much of an appetite at the moment. Norris tells her that is nonsense, she needs to build her strength up, and what she needs is some good old fashioned comfort food. Whatever would poor Emily do without Norris telling her what she needs and wants?

Emily perks up shortly after that though, because Norris takes delivery of a lovely bunch of flowers at the door. She is delighted to read on the card that they are from her niece Freda. Norris on the other hand is very uncharitable about it, saying it is typical of her to have them delivered instead of bringing them herself. Emily points out that Freda lives in Edinburgh, he replies that last time he checked there was a rail service between there and Manchester.

He can't bring Emily down though, she has brightened up so much she even thinks she might be able to manage a little jam Roly Poly after all. Norris smiles through gritted teeth.

Nick and Leanne are heading home, excited at the prospect of the romantic night ahead, with Simon being away for the night and all.

Chesney and Sinead are heading home too. They have had a good day at the park, and are laughing about Joseph trying to eat the bread instead of throwing it to the ducks. Chesney tells her how he used to worry over every little thing with Joseph when he was smaller, which Sinead finds endearing, telling him what a nice person he is. Ches comes over all embarrassed, saying it has nothing to do with being nice, it's just being a father. He then blusters he has to get Joseph home, and rushes off, leaving her standing there. Silly lad, this girl is ten times nicer than Katy, and he is treating her like dirt!

The laughter between Nick and Leanne stops abruptly when they arrive at their door, and see it is open. They stand horrified at the sight that greets them when they walk inside. Their whole flat has been destroyed.

Tina and Tommy are arriving back in the Street. Tina is fretting because her first attempt at breast feeding hasn't gone well at all. She is feeling inadequate, saying other Mums at the hospital are doing it as if it's the most natural thing in the world, yet she felt she was even holding him wrong. She asks Tommy what she is going to do if she can't ever do it, and he replies that if she can't, she can just go on doing what she is doing now, expressing her milk and feeding him with a bottle. She is not pacified though, and is still flapping about it when Izzy comes along. She begs Tina to tell her how the baby is doing, and is told he is doing just fine. Izzy tells she heard from Rita that she had started breast feeding and wants to know if he is feeding OK? Near tears, Tina tells her he is feeding just fine, then makes the excuse of feeling very tired, and leaves to go home. Izzy too is fighting the tears as she tells them she is glad he is doing OK, and bids them goodnight.

David is home now and asks Gail where Kylie is. She tells him she had to work late, and they had tried to let him know but his phone had been switched off. So saying there would be just the two of them for dinner, she lets him know she has just put a nice Toad in the Hole in the oven. He belligerently tells her he is not hungry. She is not about to be fobbed off though, and tells him he will be by the time it is ready, and thought they could have a little chat over dinner. He angrily tells her he doesn't want her dinner, and the subject of her rent going up is not up for discussion. She pleads with him to tell her what is going on with him, and points out that her trouble is that she always thinks she knows what he wants and what's best for him. She denies this, and asks what is wrong with him. Before he gets a chance to answer, the phone rings. It's Nick, telling her what has occurred at his place.

Roy is filling a flask with tea to keep him sustained during his vigil downstairs during the night. He plans to camp out down there to catch whoever is breaking in. Sylvia and Hayley think he is crazy to try staying awake all night, but he is dead set on doing it. He is still absolutely certain the intruder is Beth, and he just has to catch her in the act.

Gary is over in No. 6 and receive a text from Izzy reporting on her encounter with Tina. Anna feels so sorry for Izzy, having to deal with the fact that Tina is breastfeeding her child, and is not being very pleasant towards her either. Gary is wracked with guilt, saying the whole thing is his fault, and feels it would never have happened if he hadn't made that stupid pass at Tina. Anna is not having that though, and tells him there is one person and one person alone who is to blame for this mess, and that is Tina. They had an agreement and she went back on it. She assures him she will not get away with it, they will fight her for their baby. Gary sadly tells her that Tina has all the rights, it will never go their way, they will end up with nothing. Anna's face contorts in anger.

In the Rovers, Rita is asking Tina if they have told her when the baby can come home, and is told they don't know yet. Dennis advises them to get all the sleep they can while they have the chance, as they will get none once he is home. Sean teases Tommy about what a new man he will be when he is getting stuck into all that burping and nappy changing. Rita muses that he will be fine with it, that it's different now than when she was young. In her day, fellas thought they had done their bit by being present at the conception.

Just as they are all having a laugh about that, Anna, with the same look on her face that she had when we last saw her, marches into the pub, straight up to Tina and whacks her across the face so hard even my cheek stung! Tommy springs to Tina's defense, and Sean asks her if she is alright. It's not out of Anna's system though, and she screams at Sean that he shouldn't be worried about that conniving little cow, she is just fine, it's Gary and Izzy they should be feeling sorry for, their hearts are broken thanks to her taking their money and stealing their baby. Tina tries to explain that she never meant for this to happen, and never wanted to hurt Izzy and Gary. Anna's in no mood to listen to her excuses though, and shrieks at her that it's not her baby - it never was her baby! Tommy tells her that is enough, and to shut up. Anna's on a roll though, and has no intention of shutting up. She asks him why she should when even he has admitted what Tina is doing is wrong. She screams at Tina to ask Tommy - ask Rita & Dennis - ask anyone, they will all tell her she is stealing someone else's baby.

In tears now, Anna turns to Rita, and tells them if it was anyone other than Tina, they would be saying the same thing she is, that what she is doing is wrong. Tina tells her she is just doing what is best for the baby. A sobbing Anna tells her to just keep telling herself that, she then pleads with Tina, saying if she wants a baby, have one of her own - have Tommy's baby, anything but please don't take her son's baby away from him.

Sean puts his arm around Anna and gently tells her it's time to go now. She sobs that she is going, and waving her arm around the room, pleading with Tina to ask them - just ask them.

The police are leaving Nick's flat, Gail and David are there giving them some moral support. David suggests they all go to No. 8 and get themselves a drink to settle their nerves, and he will wait there for Owen to arrive, who is going to fix the broken door. After they leave, he sits down, takes a photo of Nick & Leanne out from under the broken glass on the floor and gazes daggers at his brother.

Talking of Owen, he is in No. 6 when Anna comes in, and without saying a word heads straight for the fridge, takes out a bottle of wine, pours herself a glass and takes a large swig. By now both Izzy and Gary are concerned too, and ask her what is wrong. She tells them what she has just done in the Rovers, and they are horrified. Izzy especially is concerned that this will hurt their case when they go to court. Owen on the other hand is very supportive towards Anna, and assures her she had every right, she was just sticking up for her family.

Katy is about to knock on the door of No. 5 to collect Joseph, when it opens and she finds herself face to face with Sinead, who is just leaving. Chesney sizes up the situation and kisses a surprised Sinead, telling her he will see her tomorrow, and both he and Joseph have had a really nice afternoon. It had the desired effect on Katy, who frostily asks Ches if she can come in and collect her son now.

Once inside, she tells Chesney she is not happy about Sinead spending time with Joseph because she doesn't know anything about her. (But I guess it's OK for Joseph to live with Ryan) Chesney tells her quite rightly that all she needs to know is that she is not a druggie (like Ryan), and accuses her of being a hypocrite, saying she hadn't given Joseph a thought when she jumped into bed with Ryan. Katy doesn't like that, and storms out in a huff.

Hayley is pleading with Roy not to spend the night on the floor of the cafe, warning him it will do his back no good. However, his mind is made up, and he bids them goodnight as he heads downstairs.

After he leaves, Hayley sits at the table with Sylvia, remarking that Roy's behaviour isn't normal. Sylvia then loses her temper with Hayley, pointing out that Roy's behaviour is never normal, and therefore she should never have bullied him into taking a path that has resulted in all this confusion. Hayley defends herself by saying she did what she thought was right, she felt Roy had a right to know why his father had abandoned him as a child, and needed the opportunity to ask him. Sylvia points out that it has never been right to make her son face up to an issue. He is now behaving like a man who is having great difficulty trying to make sense out of what has happened.

Owen has fixed the door and is taking his leave of David. He hands David three keys for the new lock, one of which David slips into his own pocket the minute Owen's back is turned. I guess the demon brother is not through with Nick just yet!

Emily is trying her darndest to get Norris and Mary to leave, telling them they have done so much, they deserve a drink at the Rovers. To her dismay though, they won't hear of it, and decide that Emily now must be entertained with a game of Risk that Mary just happens to have with her. Emily does her famous eye roll.

There is a knock at the door, and Emily is excited, hoping against hope that it will be Rita and Dennis arriving to save her from what sounds to her like the most boring way to spend an evening. It's not however, it is another large bunch of lovely flowers. These are from her nephew Geoffrey, more commonly known as Spider, and she is thrilled. Needless to say, thrilled is not what Norris is over it. Out in the kitchen with Mary he rants about him being the one who is there looking after her, and spending time with her, yet she is delighted when her relatives spend two minutes swiping their credit card from a distance, but can't be bothered to show their faces.

In No. 8, Leanne, Nick and Gail are talking things through over a bottle of wine. Leanne is more upset that they did all that to their flat yet not take anything. She tells them she thinks she would feel a little better about it if they had, this way she just feels violated. Gail suggests they were possibly disturbed before they had a chance, or maybe they were high on drugs and didn't know what they were doing.

David comes home and hands Nick the keys, telling them the place is secure now. In comes Kylie and is shocked to hear the news. She suggests they stay the night at No. 8 as Max is at a sleepover. Leanne is glad to take them up on the offer. David then apologises to everyone for being such a pain earlier in the day, Nick smiles at him and tells him he wasn't any more of a pain than usual.

Now we are in the flat of Rita and Dennis. Tommy is pointing out to Tina that she could have Anna up for assault, but Tina wouldn't hear of it. Dennis agrees it was very out of character for Anna to be violent. Tina asks them all if they think Anna was right, that she is doing the wrong thing. Rita answers her, saying she has had misgivings about the whole surrogacy thing right from the start, which she has made no bones about. She always felt Tina hadn't thought the whole thing through as to how she would feel afterwards. But now it is perfectly obvious how much she loves the baby, and she understands she is trying to do the right thing. Therefore, no matter how far this battle goes, she will be on Tina's side all the way. Tommy tells her he feels the same. Dennis doesn't say anything, but he will do what Rita tells him I expect.

David is offering to help his brother clean up the flat tomorrow, saying he is sure Audrey won't mind under the circumstances. Nick tells him he will be very glad of his help. David points out that he appears to be dealing with the situation just fine, I guess he was hoping he would be a lot more upset than he is. Nick tells him he has just been on automatic pilot since it happened, doing what needs to be done. However, he tells him it worries him that something might have happened to Leanne and Simon, he couldn't bear it if it did.

David remarks that he and Leanne seem to be really solid at the moment, and Nick agrees they are. David goes on to ask him if he has managed to put all that Peter stuff behind him, and although he looks visibly stung a little, Nick tells him he has. David of course has to continue picking at the sore, and tells him Leanne is very lucky, because if she had done all that wedding fiasco to him, he doesn't think he would have been able to get over it. Nick points out that you can if you love someone. David tells him he knows it's just him, but if someone ever betrayed him, he knows he would never be able to forgive them, no matter how much he loved them, that it would eat away at him wondering if they would do it again, he just couldn't do it. Nick thinks about this for a minute, then laughs and tells him it's lucky Leanne chose him instead of David then. The seed of doubt has been planted in Nick's head though, which is exactly what David wants.

It's going to be a long night for Roy, from his position on the cafe floor he checks the clock, it's only half past ten - many hours to go yet, so he pours himself a cup of tea from his Thermos flask.

We flip back to David, who is still sitting on the sofa. Kylie comes down the stairs wondering why David hasn't come to bed. He tells her he has just been sitting there thinking, mostly about her and the baby. She asks him if he could come and think about it in bed, and checks with him that everything is OK. He tells her everything is fine, and he will be up in a minute. As she heads up the stairs he tells her he loves her. She replies that she loves him too.

Alone once again, David takes the photo of Nick and Leanne out of his pocket, looks at it, then tears it in half, leaving Nick in one hand and Leanne in the other. This lad is obviously intent on splitting up his brother and his wife.

Written by John Kerr Directed by Tim Dowd

Hayley finds Roy asleep on the cafe floor in the morning. She's exasperated with him. He is still determined to prove that it's Beth doing the tricks on him. There's no other explanation. Hayley's worried for his health if he keeps on like that.

Gary has let Izzy sleep and she's angry that she's going to be late for work. He was only worried about her. She agrees that she is tired and couldn't get to sleep last night. She's also down about the baby. Gary shows her a letter from the solicitor who says they could have a hearing in a couple of months. She's horrified at the initial costs but Gary is determined that nobody will keep his son away from them.

Around the Platt breakfast table, Kylie expresses shock over what happened in Nick and Leanne's flat. Gail doesn't remember things ever being this bad around Weatherfield. Nick and Leanne come down after a restless night. Leanne is furious over the breakin. David makes tea and offers to help Leanne clean up which startles her in his generosity but politely turns him down.

Tim and Faye are rushing off to work/school. He's forgot to make her lunch and hands her some cash. Jason hurries him along and then asks Tim to go for a few pints after they've finished today's job. Tim turns him down as he has to stay with Faye and seems regretful of the commitment. Faye seems to have overheard some of this and looks rueful.

Deirdre and Rita are visiting Emily while Norris fusses over the tea. They tease Norris about being a nurse but Emily compliments Norris' help while she's been laid up. Deirdre admires the flowers and are told they're from Spider and Freda, to Norris' snarky remarks. Emily says she couldn't have coped without his help.

Izzy has called in sick to work and she and Gary are in the cafe. Anna is sympathising but her advice isn't well received. Roy has been distracted and unhelpful, and his mother scolds him. Tina and Tommy come in and are not happy to see Gary and Izzy. Anna is nasty, Gary tells them they have a solicitor and they'll get the baby back. A slanging match ensues until Izzy shouts at them all to stop. She's sick of them talking about Jake like he's a thing, not a baby. Tina says the baby knows her, she's his mum. She apologizes for what it's doing to them but she's not giving him up.

Leanne and David talk outside the shop. He's sympathetic. Peter comes across, having heard about the break in.Peter hasn't told Simon and offers to have him another night. She says that's great. David offers to pick Simon up after school since he has to get Max anyway. Offer accepted and David goes off leaving Peter and Leanne wondering why David is so nice and helpful these days. David smirks as he walks away.

Gary, Izzy and Owen are talking about the baby situation. Izzy thinks a court case could go back and forth for years and they don't have that kind of money. Owen says he can remortgage Number 6 but Izzy refuses to let him. Owen says it doesn't matter. Jake is his grandson and he'll live in a rented room. Izzy seems to be defending Tina who, she knows, loves the baby as much as they do. The two men have no sympathy whatsoever. Owen doesn't want her to give up.

Deirdre is buying cigs in the Kabin. Deirdre complains about the cost and Rita suggests the nicotine patch. Deirdre's pithy remark about them only working if she stuck them over her eyes, preventing her from finding her fags cracked me up. She leaves and Tommy arrives. He says he's going to the hospital to see Tina. Rita wonders if everything is ok. Tommy tells her about the run in with Gary and Izzy. He says all the anger and upset over a baby seems wrong. Rita things he should tell Tina what he really feels even if Tina doesn't want to hear it. He's afraid he'd lose her if he did that but Rita doesn't think that will be the case. He can't live with a lie, Rita tells him, and he's got to talk to her before it's too late.

After the break, we're at the hospital. Tommy has arrived, saying he's a bit late because he was delayed at the garage. She coos over the baby and says he'll be well enough to come home in a few weeks, she thinks. He says they'll just have to find a place to live.

In the pub, Leanne finds Nick, David, Kylie and Gail having a drink. Leanne has tidied and cleaned the flat. She hopes the police find the culprit before she does. Gail and David get up to go and David assures Leanne he's not forgotten he'll pick up Simon later. Gail thinks it's very nice, what he's doing for them. The next stage of David's plan has him making a few remarks about how Peter and Leanne have so much history and insinuating they still have lingering feelings, without actually saying it but Gail picks up the bait, you can tell. Result!

Tina and Tommy are in the lounge. She can tell he's got something on his mind. He doesn't seem very enthusiastic and he finally admits it. He feels a bit of sympathy for Gary and Izzy but Tina says she knows what it's like to lose a baby even though the abortion was her choice but she still thinks about it. Tina admits she made a mistake, she thought she could be a surrogate and didn't mean to hurt anyone. Tommy understands. She asks him why he hasn't been able to look her in the eye since he arrived.

Hayley is buying some chocolate for herself in the Kabin. She asks after Emily and Norris makes it sound like Emily is recovering from a near-death experience and when Hayley sends her love, he sarcastically says that won't be enough, she has to spend a lot of money on gaudy flowers before Emily will look at you. He admits Spider and Freda are the ones he's meaning. He infers they're more concerned about their inheritance. Hayley gently chides him about questioning people's motives and perhaps he needs to be more open minded.

Owen returns home. Gary is on the sofa while Izzy is in the back garden getting some air. Gary decides to go talk to her though Owen thinks he needs to give Izzy a bit of time alone.

Tommy and Tina are still talking and she thinks they need to tell the truth. She admits that she's scared. Really scared. She recalls that when she lost her father she nearly didn't survive it. She nearly gave up. She admits it has got easier over time in some ways but losing her father changed her. It scares her because if she loses the baby, she doesn't think she can get through it.

David comes into the betting shop and asks if it's ok if Simon has his tea with Max. Peter is pleased and gives permission. He turns to answer the phone and just before David leaves, he spots Peter's lighter and cigs on the counter and takes the lighter. It's a nice metal one, not a disposable.

In the cafe, Roy has gone out. Sylvia doesn't know where he is. Anna wants to get off so Hayley, who's there after work, offers to help. Faye comes in and Anna comes over for a hug. Anna notices there's a tear in Faye's coat and Faye gets defensive about it. Anna offers to fix it and Faye insists she can do it herself. Tim admonishes her for being rude. He promises Faye they'll have a night in.

Owen and Gary talk about helping Izzy get through this crisis. The doorbell rings and it's Roy. He wants a word with Owen about his CCTV camera outside the builder's yard. He wants to have a look at the recordings to see if he can see anyone trying to get into the cafe. Owen realizes Roy isn't going away so leaves with him to go to the yard. Gary goes out to the back where he finds Izzy looking at baby pictures on her phone. She's concerned. Look at how all this upset is affecting them? How's it going to affect Jake? And suppose the court case takes years, how can she justify taking Jake away from the only mother he would have known? What will that do to him? It'll be their fault. She doesn't think she can do it. She wants to back down and let Tina keep the baby.

The episode opens with an emotional scene between Izzy and Gary. She tries to explain that she loves Jake so much that she's prepared to let him go for the sake of his happiness but Gary thinks that if she truly loves then she'd be prepared to fight for him, come what may.

Roy is watching the CCTV footage on Owen's camera. All it's shown so far is Deirdre popping outside for a quick fag. Owen has things to do but Roy begs him to let him watch for five more minutes.

Izzy is still trying to make Gary see her side of the argument. If they fight for Jake through the courts the cost could lose them their home and where will that leave Jake? And even if they win, it might take years and by then Jake will have bonded with Tina. Izzy tells Gary it would rip Jake's world apart. Does he really want that?

David lets himself into Nick and Leanne's flat. He is whistling to himself and playing with Peter's lighter. Is he about to use it to set light to something? No, it seems he has another plan in mind. We see him slip it down the side of the sofa and cover it with a cushion.

Izzy and Gary are still arguing about Jake when they're interrupted by Anna. She can't believe what she's hearing when Gary fills her in on what Izzy has been saying. But Izzy points out to Anna that she was prepared to give up Faye rather than risk letting her get hurt any more. It seems Izzy has finally won the argument when Gary says they should go and see Tina before he changes his mind.

At long last Roy has spotted someone on the CCTV. "She's headed straight towards the cafe." Roy tells Owen excitedly. But Owen is forced to point out to Roy that "she" can be seen relieving herself against a wall in a decidedly unfeminine manner.

Faye's Dad is having a word with her about the way she spoke to Anna earlier. He wants her to apologise but Faye swiftly manages to change the subject by talking about choir practice and asking what's for tea. It's beans on toast again but Faye makes out she's perfectly happy with that.

Tina and Tommy are at the hospital. She asks him to tell the truth about how he really feels and, at long last, Tommy is completely honest. He says he thinks that Tina is stealing a baby but adds that he'll still stand by her, no matter what. At that moment Gary and Izzy arrive. Tommy immediately springs to Tina's defense but before anything more can be said, Izzy asks if she and Tina can have some time alone together.

IN the cafe Roy is filling in Hayley about what he saw on the CCTV. He admits that it now looks as though Beth can't be the culprit although Sylvia observes that if any woman was capable of relieving themselves standing up it would be Beth. Hayley's had enough of the whole thing and thinks it's time Roy got a grip but he is determined to solve the mystery and his next suspect is Kirk using the logic that Beth may have set him up to do her dirty work on her behalf.

Back at the hospital Tina and Izzy are having a heart to heart by Jake's bedside. Tina tells Izzy she never expected to feel about Jake the way she does. Izzy says she understands because, as she reminds Tina, she knows what it feels like to carry a baby. But before Tina can say any more an emotional Izzy tells Tina she can't fight over Jake any more, she won't tear him to pieces. "You've won Tina, he's yours," sobs Izzy.

Leanne, Nick, Gail and Kylie are in the Bistro chatting about who might have broken into the flat. Kylie thinks it's weird they didn't nick anything. She says she wouldn't have left behind a laptop even if she'd been drunk and then, seeing the look everyone's face, quickly adds that they didn't grow up on an estate like she did. Gail suggests it might have been one of Nick's disgruntled ex girlfriends. "How many angry exes have you got?" asks Leanne, shooting him a look."Not as many as you," replies Nick as Peter walks in, right on cue. He tells Leanne that Simon has gone back home with Max for his tea. There's a bit of light-hearted banter between Peter and Leanne which doesn't go unnoticed by Gail.

We return to the hospital where Izzy and Gary are having a last few moments alone with the baby before handing him over while Tina and Tommy watch through the door. Izzy nods to Tina that she and Tommy can come in. "Just take him," sobs Izzy. But, to Izzy's astonishment, Tina tells her that she's right. "It's not about me," says Tina as Izzy gives her a quizzical look.

Faye and her dad are sitting down to their tea but he can't even manage to make beans on toast without burning it. Anxious to make amends, Tim offers a chippy tea instead but Faye's not keen so they settle on a takeaway pizza.

Back at the hospital Gary is now holding the baby and Tina is trying to explain her behaviour. She says she knows that Jake is their baby but after he was born she thought he was hers. Izzy says that if they'd known it was going to be as tough as it was they would never have put her through it. Izzy offers Tina a moment to say goodbye to Jake but she just wants Tommy to take her home.

Gail is getting steadily drunker in the Bistro. She's been continuing to watch Peter and Leanne and when David comes in she tells him that she thinks he might have been right about the two of them. David says forget he mentioned it – Peter might be up for it but Leanne wouldn't do it to Nick. Gail says she dreads to think how it would affect Nick. This comment seems to set David thinking.

In the hospital Gary and Izzy are still holding Jake and having a family moment together. Izzy thanks Gary for supporting her earlier about offering to give up Jake and he replies that she made him understand: it's about love. Their special moment is interrupted by the arrival of Owen and Anna who, when they're told the news, find it hard to believe that Tina has had such a complete change of heart. But Izzy and Gary reassure them it's true and Gary says they reckon the baby can go home with them in a month. "Come here granddad," says Anna, enveloping him in a hug.

As Hayley and Roy are closing the cafe for the night she tries to speak to him again about his behaviour. Hayley tells him it's alright to feel upset about the death of his father but Roy insists that it has nothing to do with what's been going on. Just then they both hear a noise coming from the direction of the toilet. It turns out to be Craig who went in on his way home because he'd forgotten his key . But Roy isn't interested in his explanation and flies off the handle, shouting at him like a madman. Craig rushes out as fast as his legs can carry him and Hayley looks at Roy in horror.

Tina and Tommy arrive home from the hospital. Tina stands in the middle of the sitting room looking totally bereft and the tears begin to fall down her face. Tommy rushes to hold her in his arms and she begins to sob uncontrollably.

Wednesday 26 June

It's first thing in the morning, and Roy comes down into the cafe. He's devastated to find the cutlery laid out in neat rows on one of the tables.

Around Rita's breakfast table, Tommy reveals that Tina was crying in her sleep. When Tina comes in they all try offering her tea and toast, but she doesn't want anything. Rita tells her she's done the right thing, and asks if she'd like to go out for the day, get a change of scene. Tina says she can't, she has to go and see Gary and Izzy, there's one more thing she needs to do for them.

Back in the cafe, Hayley and Sylvia tell Roy they're sure that all this isn't Beth's doing, and that he owes Craig an apology. Roy concedes that he does indeed, he shocked himself. Just then there's a furious hammering on the door, it's Beth, shouting for Roy.

Over at Faye and Tim's flat, he reminds her that she's promised to apologise to Anna. She reluctantly says that she will. He tells her it's good for her to have other people in her life, but she says she likes being with him the best. He tells her he hasn't got much in, so she should go and see Anna at dinner time, and she'll probably give her a sarnie. Faye then tells him that she'll go to a friend's for tea.

In the cafe, Beth (with Craig and Kirk in tow) is ranting and raving, she says she came home to find her little Craigy sobbing his heart out. Sylvia suggests bacon sarnies as a means of recompense, but Beth thinks that's nowhere near enough. Roy apologises, but is still adamant that it is Beth who is creating mayhem in the cafe. He knows it was her who rearranged his cutlery. Beth is incredulous. "All this because someone put a spoon in your knife drawer?" Roy goes on to say that Craig wreaks havoc at Beth's behest. Kirk butts in then and says that Roy is out of order because Craig hasn't got a bad bone in his body. Beth shouts that Roy isn't right in the head, and Hayley and Sylvia try to calm everyone down. In the end Beth storms off saying that they haven't heard the last of this.

Norris is fussing over Emily when there's a knock on the door. It's the postman with a package, and when he takes it in Norris sees that it's from Freda. Unashamedly, he opens it and finds a boxed set of Film Noir dvds. He removes the card and then goes and hands the set of films to Emily as a gift from himself!

Over at Anna's, Gary, Izzy, Anna and Owen are on pins waiting for Tina to arrive. Then there's a knock at the door - she's there.

They're setting up for the day in the Bistro when Peter comes in and gives Leanne Simon's reading book that he left behind. They chat amicably for a moment or two about Simon, but this obviously infuriates Gail who is mopping the floor. The next minute Peter's jeans are soaked, and she makes sarcastic remarks to Leanne who had stopped laying tables for a moment. Peter goes off home to change, grumbling that Gail is off her rocker.

Back at Anna's, Gary and Tina are setting off to go and get Gary's name down on Jake's birth certificate. Anna tells her they're really grateful, and they promise to let her know how he's doing.

Up in Roy and Hayley's flat, she is berating him for bullying Craig, she's sure he's completely innocent in all of this. He admits that he could have hit him - and that frightens him.

Rita and Dennis arrive to see Emily. She tells them she's much improved but feeling restless, but is being spoiled, and shows them the set of dvds that Norris gave her. Rita can't believe that Norris actually put his hand in his pocket, and Dennis remarks that they must have been expensive. Norris, embarrassed, mutters that you can't put a price on friendship.

Faye goes into the cafe but before she can speak Anna jokingly asks if her tummy is rumbling - she's sure she's come for her dinner. Faye, being contrary, says that she hasn't, and lies and says that her dad made her some, a ham salad and an apple. Anna then remarks that her jumper looks like it hasn't been washed in ages, and her hair needs cutting. This infuriates Faye, who snaps that she's sick of her, she's always fussing, and she storms out.

Just then, Beth, Craig and Kirk come back in. "We want compo and we want it now!" says Beth, claiming that Craig has been scarred for life. Roy offers a free meal, but Beth is dismissive and starts talking about lawyers. Sylvia butts in then and says that there would be no case to answer. Beth eventually asks for a month of free meals, but Sylvia says a week is all she's getting, take it or leave it. "We'll take it," says Kirk, quickly, and thanking them, he hustles Beth out.

Outside, as they walk away, Beth is furious. She wanted new clothes, a holiday and hair extensions. She tells Craig he should have milked it, he's been miserable enough lately. Kirk starts to say that Craig doesn't like argy-bargy, he's sweet natured. "No I'm not, I'm horrible, I've done a bad thing," blurts out Craig, suddenly, and runs off down the Street.

Gary and Tina have returned to the Street, he thanks her, apologises for all he did wrong, and says he'll never forget what she's done for them. He promises they'll treasure the baby and do all they can for him.

In the Bistro, Gail picks up Simon's reading book. She thinks Leanne needs a pigeon hole, then if there's something someone needs to drop off for her, they don't need to hang around and bother her when she's working. Leanne says that Peter was there for all of two minutes, and reminds her that she doesn't need to answer to Gail, she is, in fact, Gail's boss.

Norris catches Emily about to ring Freda, and stops her, saying she should send her a postcard instead. Emily isn't in the mood for writing, and wants to call. Norris stops her again, asking if she'll show him how to make dumplings.

Tim comes back home and asks Faye how it went with Anna when Faye apologises. Lying, Faye tells him it went fine. Tim then says that they're going to need Anna's help, Faye will have to go and stay there for a few days as he's off to work in Newcastle with Jason.

Tommy comes back to Rita's flat to find Tina cleaning skirting boards and cupboards. She tells him not to fuss over, to just be normal.

Gary arrives at the hospital and shows Izzy the birth certificate with his name on it. She's pleased, but wishes she was the official mother. He reminds her that once the parental order is sorted, she will be, it'll be done and dusted in a few months.

In the flat, Sylvia is getting tea, as Hayley asks Roy how he's feeling. He snaps that he's tired of this fascination with his feelings. He then goes on to reveal how upset he is that someone is coming into his cafe, his world, and destroying everything. Hayley tries to be the voice of reason, she says she's sure no one is coming in, they're never seen, never heard. Roy gets angry and storms out. Hayley is scared, she's never seen Roy like this before, and asks Sylvia, "You don't think he's having a breakdown, do you?"

Anne Logan.

Friday 28 June

We're in the cafe flat, where Roy has slept through the alarm. This isn't like him. It's enough not like him that Hayley and Sylvia are both worried. They're even more worried when he wakes up and uses sarcasm while refusing to go down to work in the cafe. He's got something to do on his laptop.

Tommy and Rita are worried too, but they're worrying about Tina. Tommy asks Tina if it's a bit soon to go back to work and she's quite snappy about it. Rita tells her that Tommy's just worried about her.

Tim and Faye are on their way to the bus stop when Jason stops Tim. Faye insists she can find her own way to the bus stop and Tim tells her to pop in and see Anna at the cafe to make sure it's all right for Faye to stay with her while Tim's away. Faye says cheerfully that she's sure it will be. Anna will be made up.

In the cafe, Roy gets Owen's order wrong. Anna doesn't see Faye come in behind her as she's showing Sylvia a picture of baby Jake. Sylvia comments that Gary and Izzy will have to say goodbye to sleeping the night through. Anna agrees. Though she says she'd far rather have a baby than a stroppy teenager. Behind her, her own stroppy teenager looks a bit distressed and leaves quickly.

A deliveryman arrives - it's something Roy's been expecting: A CCTV system.

Emily's doing a bit of dusting against Norris's annoying advice. She manages to get rid of him by saying that she wants some peace and quiet to watch the DVD boxed set he gave her and by putting some nagging doubts into his mind about what Dennis will be doing to the orderly Kabin while he's standing in for Norris. Norris has put a clothes basket of clothing on the dining table. I'm not sure if it was laundry to be done or ironed or what. Whatever, Emily picks up a shirt and an envelope falls on to the table. It contains a Get Well card. Emily reads it and makes a noise that sounds like "Grrrrr! Norris!"

Tina's outside trying to scrape chewing gum off the Rovers' windows when Garry, Izzy and Owen come past. They stop for a chat and tell her they're off to the hospital to see Jake. Owen wants to buy Tina a drink later. Gary doesn't think that's enough thanks. Izzy's just happy. Tina tells Izzy that Gary's one of the good guys and they part cheerfully. But once she turns back inside the pub, Tina's shoulders drop. [I think we need a new collective noun for the Gary, Owen, Izzy triumvirate because it's annoying to keep typing the names. Perhaps "Gozzy" or "Ozy" or "IzGO" or "Gownzy" - or maybe we just need a storyline that doesn't involve them!]

Back in the cafe, Roy's nearly asleep on his feet and Sylvia tells him to go back upstairs. He says he wasn't asleep. He was just visualising where the best positions would be for his CCTV cameras. Then Tracy comes in and has a go at Roy for having a go at Craig. Sylvia has a go at her for having a go at Roy. Anna also has a go at Tracy for having a go at Roy. Roy has a go at Sylvia and Anna for having a go at Tracy, then he goes upstairs to continue reading his instruction booklet.

In the bistro, Gail's finished work but for some reason Nick won't let her help out by doing something like the ordering. David comes in to fetch one of the bistro's mini-shepherd's pies because Kylie can't be bothered to cook. So he's there when Leanne has to go to sort out a mess with Simon - she's told him he can't go to Alton Towers for his birthday and now Peter's told him he can. When Gail mutters that Leanne's quick to abandon work when Peter's involved, David agrees with her. Slowly drips the poison of his revenge, methinks.

In the cafe, Brian asks Sylvia about the CCTV set-up and she tells him everything. Roy's up a ladder but appears to have gone deaf. Tracy, at a table, says the cameras are just so Roy can sit upstairs and perve at the customers. Oh, dear! Sylvia seems to have dropped tea in Tracy's lap. Tracy makes an enormous fuss but Brian speaks to her as if to a 10-year-old trying to get out of PE. He says her cup was almost empty and she's been sitting there so long it would have been near-enough cold anyway. Sylvia coos that it's a good thing Tracy was wearing her old clothes. They're Tracy's best jeans, actually, and she flounces out. Sylvia continues to lay all Roy's secrets bare to Brian, telling him about the letter from Roy's father.

Hayley comes in. She's heard the noise Tracy was making. Roy more or less ignores her and goes upstairs to continue the installation of the system. Sylvia has discovered that Brian and his father had a difficult relationship and she relays all this to Hayley. Hayley and Sylvia both say they're worried. Hayley says Roy's been like a man possessed. They hope that Roy will get to the bottom of the break-ins and things will return to normal. "But what if he's worse?" asks Hayley.

David's back in the bistro. Leanne's still not back and Nick seems quite tetchy. Leanne appears, annoyed at being waylaid by Deirdre, and Gail says something snarky about it being time she got back to work. Leanne snaps and tells Gail that just because the stereotype of a mother-in-law is an interfering old bat, it doesn't mean Gail has to live up to it. When Nick protests she tells him that Gail's been full of these comments all week. David watches all this quietly.

Sylvia takes Brian upstairs for a chat with Roy.

Emily's at home waiting for Norris, her lips tightly shut. When he comes in wittering on about Dennis's inability to run a perfect newsagent's shop, she waits for a gap in the babble and hands him a card. He opens it and his face looks a picture. He can barely speak so Emily reads it out: "Dear Aunt Emily, I know how active you are so you are probably going mad with your ankle. I hope the enclosed DVD boxed set will stave off the boredom." It's from Freda. And now Emily will have to ring and belatedly thank her for the card and the DVDs. "And this time you won't distract me!" she tells Norris.

Brian's saying something in psychobabble and Roy stops him. All this has nothing to do with his father's death. Someone is breaking into his cafe and his home and playing childish tricks. He can't work out who is doing it and wonders if all the talk of poltergeists by various people is part of a plot to make him think it's connected with his father's death. Brian can't think who would do such a thing but Roy knows Tracy has done much worse. The CCTV is the only way he's going to find out for sure.

Tim and Jason load the van ready for Newcastle. Faye comes along and Tim takes her home to pack, insisting that she does it properly. He doesn't want her going back and forth to the flat so Anna thinks he's a bad father.

In the pub, Rita arrives exhausted. Norris's little spot checks during the day have tired her out. She asks Tommy how Tina's doing. He thinks she might feel awkward. The GazzyO trio come to the bar and Gary challenges Tommy to a game of darts. Tina gets the others to sit down - she'll bring the drinks over.

Hayley still thinks maybe Roy needs a doctor. Roy is annoyed at this and even more annoyed when Hayley suggests he needs some sleep. When Roy finishes shouting at her, Sylvia tells him off for speaking to a woman in that way. She grabs Hayley and takes her off to the pub and away from the atmosphere there.

Jason's just about ready to leave and Tim says he just has to take Faye over to Anna's. He walks her almost to the front door. She pauses there as if she's going indoors once she's waved him off. But as soon as the van's out of sight she picks up her back and scurries back to the flat.

In the pub, Owen offers Tina his flat again but she refuses. She apologises to Rita but says things are complicated enough without having Owen as a landlord again. Izzy tries to apologise to Tina but Tina brushes it off, so Izzy tells her she can go and see Jake if she wants. Tina thinks that would be too complicated. Izzy asks Gary if he'd like to go home for an early night. She says it's time they got back to normal.

Sylvia and Hayley arrive back from the pub to find the cafe door unlocked. Inside, the chairs are piled high like some more complicated version of Pick Up Sticks . There's no sign of Roy. Hayley races upstairs and returns with the news that he's gone. "He's not there!"

Oh dear, we open on the Red Rec at night, and Roy is walking briskly along the path wearing his pyjamas, dressing gown and slippers, carrying his ever present shopping bag. He is heckled by a couple of yobs on bikes, who call him a zombie, circling around him. However, he is totally oblivious to them and continues walking, looking dead ahead.

Meanwhile back in the cafe Hayley and Sylvia are frantic with worry, they have looked everywhere for Roy but he is nowhere to be found. What is more, the cafe chairs are piled up one on top of another in a ridiculous fashion and the door is unlocked. Sylvia packs Hayley off upstairs to check if Roy has left a note telling them where he has gone, and also to check if his wallet is there, as she feels men never go anywhere without their wallet.

A nervous Faye is sitting at home alone. She hears glass break outside and rushes over to close the curtains and turns on the TV. The doorbell rings, making her jump out of her skin, but she huddles with her knees up, there is no way she plans to open that door. The caller at Tim's flat is persistent, and we now see it is Dev, their landlord. Faye finally gets up the courage to ask who it is over the intercom. He tells her he needs to speak to her father about overdue rent, but she explains he has popped out for something. Dev doesn't believe her, he thinks he is just trying to dodge paying what is due, so tells her in a loud voice to make sure he knows he is looking for his rent money.

Deirdre is on her way out with Eccles for his late night constitution. She lets him decide which direction their walk will take them tonight. Back in the cafe Hayley reports to Sylvia that Roy's clothes are still there, but his dressing gown and slippers are gone. Sylvia thinks this is a good thing, that he can't have gone far, but Hayley is even more worried and suggests they call the police, she is so afraid he has lost his mind altogether.

Deirdre and Eccles are now walking on the Red Rec, (something I would never do at night, as I doubt Eccles would be a lot of help in the event of an attack). Anyway, Deirdre (who is probably there in place of Ken, because Bill Roache is otherwise occupied at the moment) suddenly stops dead in her tracks when she sees this strange man in pyjamas and dressing gown striding towards her at top speed. Her look of fear is overcome by one of puzzlement as she recognizes Roy. She speaks his name as he marches by, but he doesn't appear to hear her. Putting her arm on his shoulder he stops, and she asks him if he can see her, but he looks right through her, mutters something unintelligible and starts to walk on. She realises now he is asleep, so runs in front of him, and shouts at him until he wakes up. He is horrified to realise where he is, and cannot imagine how he got there. He asks Deirdre why he is wearing his dressing gown, but she has no idea. She suggests they head off home, and walks with him.

David has called round to ask Nick to go for a pint. He is reluctant, but Leanne insists on it. He goes on the condition they are not going to talk about babies all night.

Deirdre has taken Roy back to her place, exactly why we are not sure. He is still a little confused, and tells her he thinks he should be getting home. She is not listening though, and offers him a brandy, which he refuses and asks for a glass of water instead. She is still not listening, and pouring herself a brandy asks him if he has done any sleepwalking before. Telling her he wouldn't know, but he did remember going to bed. She suggests he sees his doctor as there is a drug he can give him - she knows, she tells him, because she works in the medical centre. :-) She sits there trying to remember the long name of the drug until Roy finally asks her if she would mind if he got his own glass of water, she barely notices him helping himself, she is too busy trying to remember the name of the drug.

She rabbits on and on about all the sights you see on the Red Rec - then she qualifies it by saying "Well, you wouldn't - you were asleep". But goes on to tell him she is always seeing weirdos on there, and walks by avoiding eye contact, but this time she thought to herself "Oh 'allo, I know this one". Poor Roy looks a bit uncomfortable at being called a weirdo.

In the Rovers The Windasses are having a drink, and Owen asks Izzy if she plans to give up work when baby Jake comes home. She tells him she will be, as she can hardly take him to work with her. Gary tells Owen that as the sole breadwinner, he just might be looking for a raise in the near future.

Tommy, over at the bar is concerned about Tina having to watch them celebrating having their baby back, but Tina assures him that if she wasn't working, she would be over there celebrating with them.

In another booth Rita and Dennis are sitting with Norris. He tells them he knows they won't like him saying it, but feels Emily can be a very selfish woman. Rita indignantly tells him she definitely doesn't like him saying that. He presses on however, saying Emily never looks at things from anyone else's perspective except her own, she doesn't appreciate the difficult position he is in, that any moment he could be cast out onto the street. The other two laugh at him, saying Emily would never do that. He tells them he knows Emily wouldn't, but he doesn't have the same guarantee from those who will come after her. He goes on to say that when Emily dies, it will be either Spider or Freda, or any other relative who might come crawling out of the woodwork who will own her house, and he will end up with nowhere to live. (No Norris, they won't own her house, she mortgaged it to Richard Hillman to have the money to give to Spider to start his business in London - he may be dead, but as far as we know, it was a legal transaction, and she did receive the money, so whoever the house ultimately belongs to, I don't think it will be any of her family - did the writers forget this? I hope not!)

The brothers arrive, and David is still sowing his seeds of evil inside Nick's mind. He suggests the only reason Leanne was so willing for him to come out was so she could speak to some other man on the phone without him overhearing. Just along the bar, Dev for some reason makes a point of telling Owen about his conversation with Faye over the rent, telling him he was told Tim wasn't in, but he doesn't believe it.

The police in Weatherfield may not be very bright, but they certainly are quick, and willing to make house calls. A constable is now in the cafe taking down particulars on the missing Royston. However, they don't get very far when in walks Roy and Deirdre. A relieved Hayley throws her arms around him, telling him how worried they had been about him. He apologises to her, and to the policeman, who takes his leave without asking why he was wandering outside in his pyjamas. Deirdre explains to them about finding Roy sleepwalking on the Red Rec, and the ladies are shocked to hear it. Roy however is still in denial after Deirdre goes home, he just cannot believe he could have done all that, and found his way to the Red Rec without waking up. Sylvia suggests they all have a nice cup of tea and sit down to see what the 'eye in the sky', aka the cctv camera has to say about the incident. He is nervous about it, but Roy agrees the 'eye' will have the last word on the subject.

Owen is relating Dev's story to Anna, who is more concerned about Tim, who might not have been in the flat at the time, than she is about him possibly hiding from the landlord because of overdue rent. She wants to go round to make sure he is there, but Owen is against it, saying she will only annoy Tim and upset Faye. She is not happy though, and asks Dev if he actually saw Tim at the flat. He tells her he didn't, but must have been there as nobody leaves a kid alone at that time of night. No, he is sure he had told Faye to cover for him so he could avoid paying his rent.

Anna decides to call Faye, ostensibly to say goodnight. She asks if Tim is there, and is told he is. Faye takes a huge chance and asks her if she wants to speak to him. Her luck is in though because Anna tells her she doesn't need to speak to him, she just called to say goodnight to her. After hanging up, Anna frets that maybe she should have asked to speak to Tim, but Owen tells her she did the right thing, as he would only suspect she was checking up on him.

David is still working very hard on Nick, suggesting in several subtle ways that Peter could still be a threat to his marriage. Nick outwardly is not buying it, but you can tell it is bothering him inside.

Norris arrives home and tells Emily Rita and Dennis send their regards to her. She tells him she doesn't intend to tell Rita about the trick he played regarding taking credit for Freda's gift. Instead of being grateful, he moans about them being back to that subject again. Irritated, she asks him if he expected it all to be forgotten, and he snipes he has no doubt he is going to be reminded of it for evermore.

Emily points out to him that it wasn't just the lie he told her that upsets her, it was the fact that he also caused her to have to tell lies too, in that she had to tell Freda her parcel had been delayed, hence the length of time it took her to thank her for it. Norris sarcastically replies she should have told her instead that Spider had sent her a bigger gift, which would guilt her into sending her yet another, then she could say the same thing to Spider so he can reciprocate with another one bigger than that.

Emily is stunned, and tells him he says the most ridiculous things. He is not penitent though, and asks her if she cannot see that her two relatives are in competition with each other, jostling for place in her will like vultures circling round a dying animal. A shocked Emily is not best pleased at being referred to as a dying animal, but Norris doesn't care. He goes on to point out that they just want her house, and the second he or she inherits it, he (Norris) will be out on his ear. He bitterly asks her if she didn't find it odd that the minute she as much as twists her ankle, flowers start arriving from every direction. He flounces off to make some cocoa, saying "You mark my words, the vultures are circling!"

It's tea instead of cocoa in the Cropper residence, and they are grouped around the computer reading the instructions on how to play back the CCTV camera. They get it working, and Roy is horrified to see himself come into the cafe from upstairs, stack the chairs in that crazy way, pick up his shopping bag and leave the premises, leaving the door unlocked behind him. He just cannot believe he could do something like that without waking up, he can't understand why he didn't fall down the stairs, but the evidence is in front of his eyes, he now has to believe the cafe ghost is himself.

David and Nick are leaving the Rovers, and David jokes that he had better make a lot of noise when he goes in, in case Leanne is on the phone to her boyfriend. Nick is narked now, and asks David to stop making jokes like that as they are not in good taste. David apologises, saying it must be a touchy subject for him, considering Leanne's past, and will stop.

When Nick gets home, Leanne is busy texting on her mobile phone. He asks what she has been up to, and if there were any calls. She tells him none for him, but one or two for her. Of course he wants to know who called her, which irks her a bit, asking if she now has to tell him every time she receives a call. He denies this, but she sarcastically tells him one call was from Toyah (maybe to tell her she just landed a part in Law & Order UK? LOL), the other was from her mother, and if he didn't believe her, he could check her phone. He decides not to, but looks worried.

Roy's somnambulism (sleepwalking) is still under discussion at the cafe. Hayley is feeling much better about it all, they know who it is, why he is doing it, (stress over his father), and that nobody else is to blame, which means unfortunately they are going to have to apologise to Beth. Nobody is relishing that one little bit!

Emily and Norris have calmed down somewhat over their hot cocoa, and are discussing the situation more rationally. She assures him she would never see him homeless, but he points out he knows she wouldn't, but it's after she dies he is concerned with. (I love the way it is assumed by everyone that Emily is going to die before Norris, when we all know that age is very often not the deciding factor in these things) She assures him she will have plenty to say after she dies, because she will set her wishes out in her will.

Norris is not placated though, and tells her about the time he was married to Myrtle, and he had a sneaky peek at her will before she died, which doesn't surprise us does it? He goes on to say he discovered she had left everything to her son, leaving him, her husband with nothing. Emily asks him if he thinks she is the same as Myrtle, and he tells her he only mentioned it to stress that wills cannot be relied on, that people can use them to tell someone how they really feel about them, or use them to take revenge on someone. "What a good idea!" says Emily. "Yes, I never thought of that!" Norris now looks more worried than ever.

Sylvia goes off to bed leaving Roy and Hayley to talk things through. He is still very upset by the events of the evening, mostly by seeing himself on the camera, acting like some kind of mad person. He opens up to Hayley, telling her he knows he is not like other people, he tries to act normal, he really tries and almost succeeds, but then he sees himself like that, like some mad man wandering about in his pyjamas and dressing gown, and is so terrified that it is the real Roy.

She hugs him tight and kisses him, and I am left sitting here with my eyes all wet.
