2014

Wednesday 2 July

Kal's dad is showing his granddaughter, Alya, the ropes on the reception desk. Gail comes in and is horrified to learn that Alya is going to be working on the desk for the summer and she, Gail, is going to become the cleaner!

Andrea and Lloyd are in the cafe. While he's at the counter, she reads a text from her husband, Neil, asking what time she's going to be home. Jenna is telling Lloyd about a holiday she's found in Majorca for the two of them, she's going to book it.

Liane is also in the cafe, it's her birthday, and Eva gives her a card and a pressie of vouchers for beauty treatments. Just then Nick comes in, and Eva urges Liane to stay calm. They then start to discuss, in his hearing, where Kal is taking her later for a meal, and Eva tells her to make sure she has fun.

Maria is knocking on the Grimshaw's front door. Marcus opens it, half asleep, it's now too late for him to take Liam to school like he promised, and Maria is cross. He says the alarm didn't go off. She walks off and he goes back in and blames Todd for not setting the alarm. He says he thought he did - but we all know he's not to be trusted.

David and Kylie go into the bistro and tell Nick about Michael going round to see Gail, they ask him to go and talk to his mother, she's more likely to listen to him as he's her favourite. Nick says he'll go later.

Kal goes to see Lianne and gives her a necklace as a birthday present. They talk about Simon and how unhappy he seems to be.

Nick goes into the bistro and tells Alya he's looking for his mum. Alya, of course, doesn't know who his mother is, so just wishes him luck. Nick gets irritable and tells her sharply it's Gail he's looking for. Just then Gail appears with mop and bucket, and Nick wants to know what's going on, why isn't she on reception? Kal's dad appears and explains that his granddaughter needed a job for the summer. (So why couldn't she do the cleaning, I ask myself?) Nick then assumes this is all Kal's doing, and gets quite abusive. Gail tries to calm him down, but Nick goes on to say how Kal and Michael are both taking advantage of her and she can't see it. Gail asks what Michael has got to do with any of it, and Nick tells her to stay away from him, he's no good for her. Gail gets really cross and says she won't be told who she can and can't see by her own son, and tells him to leave.

Steve and Eileen are in the taxi office when Todd comes in to start his shift. Steve asks what part of "You're fired!" did he not understand? Eileen wants to know what's going on so Steve tells her how Todd called in sick yesterday and then was seen out and about with Marcus. Eileen then calls him and pillock and Todd tells Steve to stick his job, and walks out.

Back at the bistro, Nick tells Steph that something has come up and he has to go. She's horrified, a big party is due in and she can't deal with them all on her own. He tells her to call Leanne and see if she can come in. Steph points out that it's Leanne's day off and it's also her birthday.....and then the penny drops, and she tells him he can't use her to get back at Leanne, that isn't fair. "Who said anything about fair?" smirks Nick as he walks out the door.

Gail arrives at Michael's house to find him talking to a policeman. She starts to walk away again, but he urges her to come inside and he'll explain.

Once inside, she sees that his place has been turned over - burgled. Everything is a mess and his best shirt has been ripped. He says it's the area, someone is broken into every other day round there, he was hoping to save up enough to move to a better area, but now has no job. Gail says she wants to help him find another job. "Come on," she says, and off they go.

Leanne and Kal are just setting out on their dinner date. He tells her that if his dad asks where they went she's to say it was just a movie, as it's Ramadan. Just then her phone rings - it's Steph calling from the bistro. Leanne tells Kal she will have to go, she can't leave Steph to cope on her own. She tells Kal to go home, she'll call him later, but he says he's coming with her.

Todd arrives home and tells Marcus what happened with Steve. Marcus says that Todd never liked the job anyway, and puts on his jacket, he's off to see Maria and Liam and try to make up for this morning. Todd then lays it on thick about how hurt he is getting fired and asks Marcus to stay and keep him company. Marcus relents and stays, missing Todd's smirk as he takes his jacket off again.

The bistro is crowded and Steph and Lianne are busy. Michelle comes in for change and sees Maria sitting at the bar on her own, (who is babysitting?) and Kal is sitting at a table. Just then Nick comes in and thanks her for covering and chuckles that he hopes it didn't interfere too much with her plans. She tells him he's sad, and goes to get her coat. Kal gets up and tells Nick he's pathetic, and says he's heard about his visit to the gym and that whatever happened to Gail's job was nothing to do with him. Leanne comes back and they leave together.

Gail has taken Michael to the taxi office, he tells Steve and Eileen he has a clean driving licence, he's a hard worker - and he hasn't long been out of prison. He says he made a mistake but he's turned over a new leaf. Gail says she'll vouch for him. Steve says they need someone on the switch and agrees that he can start tomorrow at 1pm.

Outside, Michael is really pleased and thanks Gail for getting him a job. Just as he gives her a hug to thank her, David and Kylie come round the corner and are horrified. Gail explains that Michael just got a job at Streetcars, because if it wasn't for them he would still have a job at the garden centre. "I'm not having him working on our doorstep!" huffs David, but Gail points out that it is not up to him. As she walks off with Michael, David tells Kylie they have to do something about this.

Steve goes into the Rovers and Michelle tells him she's found a car for the new business, it's a limo, and Rob and Tracy might hire it for their wedding. Steve doesn't want to chauffeur Rob and Tracy, who he calls a 'mad cow'. Michelle tells him to be a bit more positive.

Andrea is in the pub with Lloyd, she's come to revise with Steve for their forthcoming exam. Lloyd tells her to go to his flat for something to eat when she's finished, but she tells him she won't be much company and asks if they could make in some other time.

Leanne arrives home and tells Eva, who has been babysitting Simon, about her ruined evening.

David and Kylie go back to the bistro and tell Nick how Gail has just got Michael a job at Streetcars. Nick says it's time he and David took a more direct approach.

Thursday 3 July

Much as it pains me, I have taken a break from my obsession with the Tour de France to bring you this Thursday episode.

Gail's at Michael's and he invites her in. She's brought him a present - a new work shirt. He moves to hug his thanks and Gail backs off. He mentions her kindness and she tells him to do himself proud.

In the street, Leanne tells Kal that Nick seems to have messed up the rota and suddenly she's working late. Dev listens from outside the shop. Leanne tells Kal that all she can do is not react and hope he gets tired of all these games. She leaves, her heels clicking on the cobbles, and Dev comes over to talk to a worried Kal. He assures him that Leanne can look after herself.

Nick comes out of the bistro and snaps to Leanne that she's late.

He's on his way over to the salon, where he asks whether David knows Michael's address. He doesn't but he can find out. David wants to know what Nick needs the address for and Nick says Michael's not taking the hint. Gail comes in looking for Audrey. David asks why she left the house so early and she says she had to go to the chemist. She asks what David and Nick are talking about and they tell her it was Leanne. "Yeah, Dave's a really good listener," says Nick.

Julie's having a sandwich crisis. She's fed up with ham and tomato, even though she makes them herself. Izzy suggests swapping sandwiches tomorrow but that just makes Julie nervous. She decides to make ham and tomato for Izzy just in case she doesn't like what's in Izzy's sandwiches and they have to swap back! Sally comes over and mentions the text message she's just got from Tim, full of kisses. She brags about how good their 11-month-old relationship (does it feel much longer to you?) is. Carla asks what they're talking about and everyone goes quiet. Julie says Sally has a rich and fulfilling relationship. Carla harumphs and says that's good. The others hiss at Julie for talking about good relationships in front of Carla.

Jenna has discovered more good things about the holiday hotel. Andrea says they'll have lots of fun. Lloyd wonders if she'll miss them because he thinks she's a bit preoccupied. She blames that on the exam this afternoon.

In the bistro, Nick snaps that the specials board (written by Leanne) looks as if a four-year-old has written it. He asks Steph to do it again. Audrey has a problem - she asked for her pasta sauce without cream and she's got cream. Nick turns nasty and gives Leanne a telling over over Audrey's head. He says she's been waiting 20 minutes and now her meal's ruined, though Audrey protests that that isn't true. Leanne goes to replace the dish and Nick tells Audrey he's sorry she had to witness that. "She won't be expecting a tip." Audrey tells him she thinks he was a bit hard on Leanne but Nick just turns and stalks away.

In the gym, Dev's on a treadmill, reading a magazine and giving Kal some life coaching. Kal worries about Leanne meeting his family but Dev says he should take his own advice and just go for it. "Your mum can't be that scary." "You want a bet?" asks Kal.

Sally's being unctuous. If you don't know what that means, think of Sally being annoyingly efficient and add snail slime. It's no wonder Carla's going off to a meeting with McNees. She tells Sally she's sorry she's such a pain to be around. Sally smirks.

David and Nick are on a council estate. We can tell this because there's an extra in a hoodie and there's a pile of rubbish in the car park.

Indoors, Michael sings Sweet Caroline very loudly as he irons his new shirt. There's a knock on the door. He's wary until David says it's the police and he opens it to find that neither of them looks like Sting or is wearing a uniform. "We were in the area so we thought we'd drop by," Michael is told. "You must be Nick," he says. David asks if they can come in and Michael asks why. "Because it's polite," Nick hisses in his face.

[break including an awful Andrex ad about "How clean do you feel after going to the loo?"]

Michael tells the godbrothers he's been burgled. He expects them to laugh at the irony but they don't. He hastily tells them it was Gail who sought him out, not the other way round. Nick says that's because she's a kind and generous person and people take advantage of her. David says that means she's a sucker for hard-luck cases. Michael points out that if not for Kylie's letter he would have stayed away. They tell him he must stay away now. No love letters, no calls. "No anything," snarls Nick. "And no job," David says. Definitely no job. Michael asks if he gets a say and Nick says he gets to say "goodbye." Michael tells Nick he knew a few hard cases inside and he can tell this isn't really Nick. Nick tells him that a year ago he had a future and an undamaged brain. "And zero anger-management issues," adds David - this seems to scare Michael more than anything they've said so far. Nick tells him that though Michael probably knows the legal system much better than he does, but he thinks if a court's told he lost it with the man who was terrorising his mum, he thinks they would be mitigating circumstances. Michael clarified that this means if he takes the job he'll get a hiding. The boys agree and go to leave. Nick turns to shake Michael's hand.

Outside, David tells Nick how impressed he was. Nick's good at this. "It made a change not being the crazy one," he says. Nick doesn't want to be good at this. He just wants Michael to stay away from his mum.

In the taxi office, they notice Michael's late. Steve's very tense. Andrea comes in and thinks he should relax. They tell her about Gail persuading Steve to take on Michael. Andrea is proud of them. "Everyone deserves a second chance." Lloyd agrees with her. He says it's good to put something back. Steve wants to know what happened to his opinion that "once a crim, always a crim."

David rings Kylie to tell her about the visit to Michael. Audrey comes in all hot and bothered after being at the wholesalers. She asks whether David's seen Nick and what they talked about. David admits Leanne was mentioned and says Nick seemed tense. "He wasn't tense," says Audrey. "He was cruel. He was downright cruel."

Carla's back from her meeting and McNees' order has been renewed. In the office she doesn't seem that happy about it, though.

Lloyd's on the switch when Gail comes in expecting to see Michael. Lloyd explains that he didn't show and he's had to call in Fat Brenda, who was supposed to be going for a wax. He tells Gail he's got bigger worries that Michael.

Sally and Tim settle down for a meal in the bistro. They argue over whether Sally should order a dish just because Tim wants to taste it. As Leanne serves their drinks, Nick barges past so the drinks spill all over them. Steph watches aghast. Leanne accuses Nick of doing it deliberately. Nick blames Leanne and offers the pair a bottle of wine . . . no, wait, a meal on the house. "Whatever they spend, I'm docking your wages!" he says.

In the Rovers, Steve's pessimistic over this afternoon's exam. Lloyd and Jenna discuss their holiday and ask Andrea if she's coming to wave them off. She hesitates and says she probably will. When she goes to the loo, Lloyd tells Jenna he thinks Andrea's going to dump him. She argues that Andrea adores him and that it's good she's not a control freak. After all, it was her idea for them to go on holiday together.

Tim appreciates an accident and especially appreciates the chance of a free meal. Sally knows it wasn't an accident and doesn't feel hungry. Tim's determined to order lobster cocktail and then an expensive steak. Nick comes over all Basil Fawlty and snaps at a man who complains he's been waiting 15 minutes. The man walks out and Nick tells him good riddance. He snaps at Leanne and is so nasty Sally tells him he should apologise. Nick says that's off the menu so Sally drags Tim out of the bistro. No steak for him tonight!

Gail goes to see Michael. She's angry and he tries to get her to go. She refuses and tells him he owes Steve an apology. She's not going anywhere until she finds out what's going on.

Steph commiserates with Leanne. Leanne tells Nick that the more he tries to hurt her, the more he hurts the business. "Good!" he says. Leanne's had enough and says she quits. Nick's pleased with that, too, but Leanne warns him that she's not finished with him yet. "I've not even started!" she says.

Gail's really annoyed with Michael. "Are you in trouble? You can tell me. You can tell me anything," she says. Michael tells her he can't be just her friend. "I want more. I need more, Gail. Working so close to you every day would be torture." Gail says she understands. "You'd like me to stay away." He says "like" doesn't come into it but it's probably for the best. She gets up to leave and tells him to get in touch if there's anything at all that he needs. As Michael closes the door behind her he's close to tears.

The end of this episode.

I like Michael. And I'm liking Tim more and more. I think the programme makers thought, "What kind of man would annoy Sally?" and made him her boyfriend. He says out loud all the things Sally refuses to admit she thinks.

Friday 4 July

Good afternoon. I am writing this whilst watching the men's final at Wimbledon, so I am a little distracted. This may impact on the following report.

If he wins Federer will be the oldest champion in the Open era. Would you bet against him?

Over in Weatherfield events tonight were written by Carmel Morgan, directed by Brett Fallis and remain the copyright of ITV to whom many thanks for allowing us to keep the world up to date.

Federer just about took the first set on a tie break.

We are in the gym where Kal is showing his mother around the premises, although there is no sighting of Leanne so far, which is a pity because mother can sum people up in 60 seconds. Apparently he is the favourite son (well only son actually). Mother wants to know if she is blonde, brunette or red head. When told blonde she asks if it dyed or natural. Kal claims it does not matter. Dyed then. Kal's father notes that mother's hair seems to unnaturally dark with no gray showing. She claims it is all natural.

Round at Platt Towers Max is fast turning into the spawn of the devil (which as he is not David's is hard to believe). This time he has a football he is refusing to hand over to Kylie. She gets him to eat his breakfast with the milk being good for Max's teeth and bones. He plays with the food rather than eating it and milk goes everywhere. He is driving Kylie insane. They go upstairs and David accuses Gail of thinking about Michael the crook. Max comes back down with the ball and throws it at the television which falls over and breaks.

Federer has just lost his service game.

Carla has a problem with the car and in the absence of anyone else Luke is looking after the garage and is told the car makes a clicking noise when it goes into fifth. He tries to ingratiate himself with the attractive woman in front of him with a bit of flirting but she does not take to it. He reckons he might pull.

One set all as Djokovich held his serve and nerve.

Leanne storms into the gym looking for a Nick Tilsley shaped punchbag. Kal signs at her to cut it off but she ignores and the bile pours out until Gail the new cleaner pops out from under the counter where she has no doubt been scouring the floor. Gail suggests she adds brain-damaged to her other insults of her son. Gail asks if Leanne and Kal are working out together. Gail says she is job hunting actually. Gail confirms that resigning was the right thing to do. She is given her wages and departs. Gail tells Leanne that "Actions have consequences." Alya says it could be worse - she has to swerve the "Asian Inquisition" (well no-one expects the Spanish Inquisition do they?). Kal says that his mother is dying to meet her. It will be more of an inspection than a meeting. Leanne suggests waiting until the dust has settled.

David wanders along the Street and ask Steve about his new switchboard bloke. Steve tells him that he did not show. David feigns ignorance and Steve says that Gail needs to be told that a career in recruitment is unlikely. Steve has texted him not to bother coming in. David is right made up with that result.

Back on Centre Court they both appear to have held serve all the way through the third set so it is time for another tie break.

Alya has heard of a job and tells Leanne about it. But she has a problem - no references, about which she will have to be honest. Kal reckons Nick will be unable to run the Bistro without her and will come crawling back. Kal again says that his mother and son need to meet him - come round at 6 tonight. They will be officially an item.

Djokovic is on top throughout the tie break and although it gets a bit tight takes the set - so he is now 2 sets to 1 ahead. Federer is starting to look tired and there are a couple of errors. And forgets to get a new racquet when they have new balls!

In the Street Peter swigging from bottle when he stops Carla. He tells her that he misses her. She wants to know what she is supposed to do with that. He tells her that once he wakes in the morning it takes a minute and then it hits him. He thinks about how much he has hurt her. He just misses her. She may be feeling it - but she cannot go there. He tells her she should when Luke comes over and wants to know if Peter is bothering her. Peter tells him everything is fine and it is a private conversation. Carla confirms she is fine with a nice smile. She turns on Peter and says she is hanging on by her fingernails, that is what she does. Whilst she is busy she can keep her mind off her problems - but when she seems him it overwhelms her.

Djokovic has broken the Federer serve. Looks like he will take the fourth set.

In Roy's Rolls Steph, Eva and Leanne are discussing how good the job was in the Bistro - no travelling costs and two minutes to get to work on top of the free food. Eva reckons that Leanne should be suing for unfair dismissal but Leanne is realistic - she just needs to work out what to do. Leanne reveals that she is meeting the whole of Kal's family later. And there is no cooking needed because it is Ramadan and therefore no food until sundown. And as Steph points out there are no drinks or nibbles either - not even water. Nil by mouth to sundown. Leanne looks a little unamused.

Federer has broken the Djokovic serve. So it is all evens again.

In the Rovers Jenna has hung up her pinny and is off on holiday. Lloyd arrives looking distinctly unhappy. But he cannot raise Andrea - he just keeps getting voicemail and wants to see her before he goes. Steve's phone rings - it is a message about the new vehicle he is getting to extend the business. It seems like good news. He texts back. Lloyd is not sure what it wrong this time and reckons he has blown it again.

Djokovic has broken the Federer serve. Looks like he will take the fourth set again.

In the Bistro Steph and Gail are putting together some amazingly awful flower decorations for the tables. (They need a florist urgently). They are discussing the events between Nick and Leanne the previous evening - but nothing will convert Gail, she will always support her son. David arrives and tells Nick that Michael did not turn up for work. David admits that even he was a bit scared.

Leanne is getting ready for the inquisition. Eva seeks to re-assure her that all will go well.

Amazingly it has gone from Djokovic being 5-2 up to 5-5 in the fourth set. Federer has been pulling all sorts out of the bag, including challenging a line call which gives him a major point.

After the break Leanne is facing the family. So far they know little about her. Kal's son has not appeared and Leanne is showing signs of being nervous. It seems he is struggling with the idea of a new woman in his father's life. Yas sees the photo of Simon and Leanne says they are not to be taken in by the angelic smile. Leanne explains the family pictures. So she comes from a fractured background.

Federer has taken two further games and so it is two sets all. An amazing recovery.

Andrea's husband is not going back to his job. He feels their marriage needs rekindling and moves to kiss her. He feels that there is a gap between them and he wants to close it. Andrea suddenly remembers that she is supposed to be baby sitting for Carolyn and disappears leaving him behind. He will wait up then.

Djokovic has had some falls during the game and has missed a couple of shots as a result.

Gail and Nick are discussing her visit to Michael who is going to give her a wide berth in future. Nick wants to know why she is pining for some loser. Nick says let him rot in the Newland estate. Gail is surprised Nick knows where he lives. Nick denies it.

And it seems that some medical attention has been summoned for Djokovic.

Outside the Rovers Steve shows his new purchase to Michelle - a VW camper van. Steve reckons it is cool and retro and will go down a storm for weddings. It cost £150 under budget. There is a pink fluffy steering wheel. Steve says that the van is hipper than a hypnotised hippy with a hip replacement, doing hip hop at the Hippodrome. Michelle is not convinced! She sounds unenthusiastic. Lloyd reckons it is a money pit. Michelle thinks it might be bit niche but it is only going to take one happy couple to give it a whirl and word of mouth will do the rest. She gives him a kiss.

Back at the Inquisition Leanne is telling her personal history and giving it quite a good spin. Mother asks if Leanne is a reader - she asks everyone because she is a librarian. Leanne responds chick-lit mainly - mentions Marian Keyes. Alya suggests a putting her on a stool for a 360 degree inspection. They discuss Nick - who is struggling with Kal and Leanne and it is not the real Nick - but this version is here to stay.

Andrea comes running into the Street and gives Lloyd a huge snog.

At the other end of the Street Luke is telling Carla that the car is not ready. But there is good news too - in lieu of the car he will see her home and also carries her handbag. Peter sees this little bit of tomfoolery. Andrea waves farewell to Lloyd and Jenna.

Play has restarted and Federer is serving a mean game.

Gail is once again at Michael's house and he wants to know if her boys know she is there. David and Nick will not notice her absence and Michael makes them a cup of tea. Gail finally finds out that the boys had been round to warn Michael off. Gail apologises for the way her bullies behaved. Gail could swing for them. Gail tells Michael to tell Steve what happened and she will sort out the bully boys.

And Djokovic is not moving so well now despite the medical attention.

Back at the inquisition the family are leaving - Leanne and Simon must come round once Ramadan is over. And Alya tells her well done for not saying it - Leanne "Saying what?" "Not even water" everyone responds. And they all laugh. Kal and Leanne hug and kiss it has gone well. As they emerge Nick wanders past - he was just going to knock - he will keep it brief. He is closing the Bistro. Leanne asks to discuss it later. Nick says Leanne is a stickler for good manners. He thought his ears were burning - because they had been discussing him. Nick calls Leanne such a lady - then he apologises - Leanne has many qualities - she is flexible, three cheers for lapdancing, oh did they not know - well Leanne does hide her light under a bushel - a red light naturally. She is always walking - Ancoats, Piccadilly, a small patch with a mattress strapped to her back. And nothing stops Nick. Leanne rushes indoors. Nick says they should get her to pull her cv out - it makes quite a read. And he turns and goes. The family stare open mouthed and upstairs in the flat Leanne simply breaks down in tears.

They are holding their serve through the fifth set.

What have we learned tonight?

It takes much longer to write an update whilst watching tennis.
Given Leanne's record would any man actually go out with her if she told them the truth? And does Nick know how the Italian restaurant?
The Street needs a florist.
And I am with Lloyd - the camper van is likely to be a humourous money pit - somehow I do not think Steve will be retiring on the proceeds any time soon.
And Carla is just a little too old to have her bag carried surely? Luke has got a twinkle in his eye though.
Almost forgot - Djokovic just about pulls it off in the fifth set.

Monday 7 July

Leanne and Kal's good mood this morning is short lived, cut off by the sight of workmen taking down the sign over the Bistro. Gail and Steph are watching. Leanne doesn't know what's going on though Nick had threatened to close the place down which disconcerts Steph, worried for her job. Gail asks how Nick was last time Leanne saw him and she doesn't have good things to recall.

Across the road, Alya sees Gary come along with the baby buggy and has a coo over wee Jake. Izzy wheels by but doesn't notice any sparks between Gary and Alya (though they seem to be there). She likes Alya. Behind them, Sally and Tim come smiling out of the house. Tim's got new aftershave or cologne, which Sally likes.

Gail is in the house moping about Nick losing the plot. David and Kylie are shocked. Gail is at her wits' end with both David and Nick. Gail decides she is going to put things right and orders David to come along with her to tell Steve why Michael didn't turn up for work. No argument.

Carla weary of seeing Peter's name everywhere, correspondence, bank statements. It's all a reminder. Sally brings some contracts in and points out that both directors have to sign them, she and Peter.

Steve is dealing with a difficult client who's upset there isn't more staff driving cars, making the wait longer. Gail comes in and faces a mouthful from Steve about the waste of space she'd recommended. She ushers David around to explain which he does, quite honestly, as it happens. Steve looks alarmed when David mentions that Michael is tagged and Gail begs for one more chance. Steve, with his usual feet of clay, allows Michael the chance. Gail gathers him in a huge hug for thanks.

Deirdre comes in from a difficult visit to Tescos. Narrower aisles and more self serve checkouts which, she admits, scare her. Peter takes her bags and tells Deirdre that Sally has called and passed on a message. Carla wants to see him at the factory. Deirdre is an absolute delight with her wittering on about Sally and complaints that nobody tells her anything. Peter is curious as to why Carla wants to see him. He thinks he ought to clean himself up though Deirdre warns him not to get his hopes up and please, don't use her hairspray. Huh?

Speaking of hairspray, we're in the salon, now. Kylie is chatting to a client about her holiday to Barbados, boring the life out of Maria. Marcus comes in and asks to see Liam. Maria allows him to pick Liam up at a mate's after tea and have him for an hour. Marcus asks her not to let Todd know. Maria reckons he shouldn't be with someone he has to keep secrets from. Kylie is taking all this in but becomes distracted. The client she's sitting with has gone all still and Kylie freaks out, thinking she's died. "Not another one" Maria murmurs. Marcus comes over but the woman in question has just fallen asleep. Marcus completes arrangements then hurries off to work as he's going to be late and is already on a warning. Maria gently tells him that Todd's bad news. Marcus doesn't disagree but doesn't agree either.

Outside, Todd sees Marcus come out of the salon and wonders....

In the factory, Peter has arrived, looking decent. Sally ushers him into the office. The workers are curious and peering over Sally's shoulder. Sally's curious as well though she, at least, knows why Peter's there. I think they're all expecting fireworks.

Leanne is buzzing Nick's flat. He's not answering so she leaves a voice message on his phone, hollering about wondering what he's going to do next, reveal her coke habit? or burning the restaurant for insurance? And you don't get three guesses as to who walks up behind she and Eva, hearing both of those statements. Leanne tries to do damage control, introduces Eva who says Leanne isn't normally like that. Leanne asks for five minutes to chat and explain. Yasmeen agrees, not unkindly, it has to be said and follows her.

Back to the factory, where Peter is sat in the office, fidgeting. Carla tells him she is going to move out of the flat and sever their business ties. Sally interrupts with a coffee tray. Carla's look sends her scuttering back out the door again. Peter is sad it's come to this. Carla hands him the papers to sign, has a cheque for his half, (Boy, the factory must have made a leap in business for her to afford that) and tells him she wants him out of her life for good. He doesn't want to sign and doesn't want her money. She restates her wishes and if he cares for her at all he will sign the papers. He quietly agrees to sign the papers, and does, but he doesn't want the money.

Leanne thanks Yasmeen for the opportunity to explain. They do agree they both want the best for Kal. Leanne admits that what Nick said about her past is true. It's not just a foreign country, it's a different universe. She made poor choices out of desperation. She insists she's not a bad person, she believes in right and wrong. Yasmeen asks Leanne to put herself in her shoes. Leanne says she'd want her son to be happy, no matter what gutter she came from and Kal doesn't have a problem with her past. Yasmeen still disapproves and from her point of view, you can understand why. She implies that Leanne will realize the right thing to do and will be able to cope (with giving Kal up, presumably). Yasmeen leaves Leanne to think.

Sally is regaling the girls about a romantic gesture Tim made the night before involving pot pourri. There's a bit of banter about bedroom antics but Beth's parting comment about soul mates seems to give Izzy pause for thought.

In the pub, Tim and Luke are in a booth. Luke is looking over his shoulder at Carla who's sat by herself at a table. Maria comes in and joins her. She commiserates with Carla about men. Maria notices Luke looking and thinks it's at her, probably disapprovingly but Carla dismisses it. Maria is uncomfortable and wants to go. Carla points out that maybe Luke is looking because Maria is gorgeous. But it turns out Luke was looking at Carla, he admits to Tim. Luke goes to the bar and offers Carla and Maria a drink. He turns on the charm and most definitely flirts with Carla but Carla turns down a drink. Maria accepts. As he goes to the bar, Carla tells Maria she's moving on and admits it's a good thing (though it seems like she's not quite 100% behind that statement). With that in mind, though, she tells Luke she'll have the drink after all then whispers to Maria "back in the game...".

Next door at Number 1, Rob and Peter and Deirdre are having their tea. Deirdre asks about the meeting with Carla. Rob puts his usual two pence in but Deirdre thinks it was good of Carla to offer him the money. Peter restates that he doesn't care about that. There's an interlude in the conversation when the subject of what Deirdre's cooked for tea comes up (turkey strips. She loves them. Rob seems to be tolerating them and delicately turns down a second helping) Deirdre suggests he take the money for Simon's sake. Peter pushes his plate away, appetite gone and decides to go out. This upsets Deirdre because she knows he's probably going to drink.

Todd and Marcus have a drink in the pub. Todd suggests they go for a meal but Marcus lies that he is going to see a co-worker. Todd sees Maria texting someone and Marcus' phone then buzzes. Suspecting the lie, Todd doesn't say anything but his radar is buzzing as much as the phone is. Carla comes out of the loo and notices Peter at the bar with an orange juice. She remarks that there better not be anything in that. Didn't know you cared. She returns to Maria, Tim and Luke and they chink glasses in a toast. Cheers! Peter slips a flask out of his pocket and tops up the juice.

Leanne has told Kal about her talk with his mother who had suggested Leanne dump Kal. Kal offers to talk to his mother. Gary happens by and mentions that there's a new sign up at the Bistro. They all go down the road to have a look while Gary pushes the buggy down Victoria Street and encounters Alya again. He admits he's a stay at home dad at the moment. She's impressed. He also says he's happily attached. Sort of. Hmm... They part ways on that note.

Nick has the biggest dirt-eating grin on his face as Leanne stalks towards him, wanting a word. The sign behind him says "just NICK'S"

Gail comes to see Michael to tell him she's spoken to Steve and he's going to have a second chance. He starts on Wednesday. She asks him to let her know if anyone in her family bothers him again. He calls her his guardian angel and invites her to stay for his tea. She agrees gracefully. He's quite grateful.

He and Leanne bicker and she says she's still going to have her share of the Bistro. Kal tells Nick he has no more respect for him anymore.

Leanne and Luke are now looking very friendly in front of the jukebox while a wobbly Peter gapes at them from a booth, topping up his drinks from his flask. Tim and Maria are ready to head out. Carla makes a few disparaging remarks at Peter's expense. He urges her to have a bit of dignity. She has had enough of Peter so insists that Luke come back to hers for more to drink. You don't have to ask him twice. As she passes Peter, she whispers in his ear that she's taking a leaf out of his book and going for a younger model.

Luke's looking through Carla's CD collection which is almost certainly a couple of decades adrift from his own. Carla's street cred is saved when Luke finds an album by The Kinks. As he tells her, "they knew what they were doing in them days".

Jason is locking up the yard when Gary comes along and asks if he's got any work. As luck would have it, Jason says he could do with a bit of help. They're interrupted by Alya sauntering past. She jokes to Gary that they must stop meeting like this. Jason tells Gary to stick his tongue back in then pointedly asks after Izzy. Gary ignores the question and suggests they go for a pint to celebrate his new job.

Carla is throwing some CDs into the rubbish. Luke asks what she's doing and she tells him she's trying to bin her past He asks how long she was with Peter but she'd rather forget about him. She starts to open up about how much easier life was when she was younger. "In the olden days'" jokes Luke. Carla joins him on the sofa.

On another sofa on the other side of town, Gail is sharing Michael's stew. Apart from the lack of a dining table his home looks remarkably well furnished for someone who is supposedly on his uppers. They chat about this and that and we learn that Michael's middle name is Marlon, after Marlon Brando. Gail notices a photo of a baby on the side. It's Michael's son and it seems he hasn't seen him for years. Michael admits he didn't behave very well. "All of us have pasts," says Gail which, in her case, is the understatement of the year.

Anna is out watching Faye at a dance rehearsal so Owen is having an evening in with Izzy and Katy. Izzy asks Katy whether she misses Chesney. She says she did at first but not any more. We watch the cogs going round in Izzy's brain. She observes that maybe women don't need a man in their lives. Owen looks concerned and asks if everything is ok.

In the Rovers Eva's pulling pints and Peter asks her whether she's heard the gossip about Carla copping off with "that young bloke". He claims he can't remember Luke's name.

Jason and Gary are having a drink. Jason goes off to the gents and Alya and Gary exchange a few words. There's definitely some flirting going on.

Todd is the next to come in. "No Marcus?" asks Eva. Todd says he had to go to see "his family", making quote signs with his fingers. He picks up some leaflets on the bar and asks who made them. Alya says it was her and Todd gives her the benefit of his unwanted opinion - shocking choice of font and too wordy.

Meanwhile Nick and David are in the Bistro drinking beer together. For some reason they're on their own with not a customer in sight. David tells Nick about Gail making him go to speak to Steve to persuade him to give Michael his job back. Nick can't understand what Gail sees in Michael. David has no idea but says maybe she goes looking for a lost cause. "Must be like looking in a mirror," mutters Nick. David asks Nick if he's sure he's doing the right thing, renaming the Bistro 'Just Nick's'. Nick says it's alright for David. He's got Kylie and the kids whereas what's he got? Thirty covers and a cellar full of marked up wine.

Back at Carla's she's pouring herself another glass of red wine. Luke tells her that Peter was an idiot to let her go. He says that she could have any man she wanted. "Any man?" asks Carla, looking at him with meaning.

During the ad break Carla must have downed at least another couple of glasses because as the theme tune fades she and Luke move in for a passionate kiss. But within seconds he's pulling away and telling her he can't. Carla looks confused and Luke looks flustered. He tries to explain. He thinks she's 'well-fit'. Carla's embarrassed and sits down on the sofa. Ignoring what's just nearly happened she tells Luke she can't bear being in the flat. Everywhere she looks she thinks of Peter and Tina and what they got up to there. Luke joins her on the sofa and takes her hand. Carla says she understands why he couldn't go through with anything - she's a mess and he's a gentleman. Luke says he'll kick himself tomorrow for saying no but he ought to go. Carla thanks Luke for being there and not knocking her back in front of Peter. Luke says he'd better leave before he changes his mind.

Izzy is still with Owen and Katy waiting for Gary to show up. Owen says he's probably in the pub. He picks up on the fact that Izzy doesn't seem very happy. She insists everything is fine between her and Gary and goes off to join him in the Rovers but Owen doesn't look convinced.

Steph's about to tuck into a plate of chips when Luke arrives for a chat. He tells her about what happened - or rather didn't happen - when he went back to Carla's. He says he couldn't go through with it because, unlike the Peter Barlows of this world, he could never take advantage of vulnerable women. Steph tells her brother that he's a far better man than Peter. This makes Luke feel much better and he helps himself to Steph's chips.

Eva's chatting to Steve behind the bar when Marcus comes in. She asks him if he had a nice time with Liam. Uh oh. Todd is sitting nearby having a drink with Jason and Gary. He is not a happy camper. He makes it quite clear in front of the whole pub that he doesn't appreciate being lied to by Marcus and stalks out. "Have I just put my foot in it? " asks Eva as the penny drops.

Izzy comes in looking for Gary. He tells her he's celebrating getting a job with Jason. With Izzy's arrival, Gary gets up to leave but she's keen to stay for a drink. The tension between the two of them is palpable.

Gail's evening with Michael is coming to an end. He would walk her to the bus stop but can't on account of his curfew and the tag round his ankle. Instead he does the next best thing and gives her a gift of a potted plant. It's known as a Dainty Dame. Michael explains it's very like Gail. It looks fragile but it has tough little blooms and it's very fragrant. Gail looks up at Michael like a love-sick teenager while Michael shakes her hand and instructs her to text to let him know when she's arrived home safely.

Carla's listening to music and contemplating life when there's an insistent ring on the doorbell. It's Rob, come to see if she's alright. She says she's fine and tells him to go back home to Tracy. But Rob says maybe he's the one who needs to talk to her so she reluctantly buzzes him up.

Marcus is at home with Todd. He apologises about lying to him about seeing Liam. Todd says that's not what's upsetting him then goes into a big theatrical number, telling Marcus that he knows what's it's like to want a kid. If we didn't know him any better it would almost seem convincing when he talks about losing Billy. He tells Marcus that when he had him, he felt like the weird one, fancying men and yet loving his son. Marcus says he hates seeing Todd like this but Todd tells Marcus he wants to be on his own. He refuses to talk about it and makes Marcus leave.

Gail arrives home, clutching her potted plant. David and Nick seem to have put their differences aside and are now united in their dislike of Michael. As Gail says, they're like the brothers Grimm, hatching their next plan to scare people. Gail refuses to let them spoil her euphoric mood, only looking momentarily alarmed when Nick suggests Michael might have given her a marihuana plant. She tells them she's taking it upstairs to bed with her and, judging by the dreamy look in her eyes, she'll probably be sleeping with it under her pillow.

Rob's makes Carla a fried cheese sandwich while she tells him about what didn't happen with Luke. She moves on to Peter then says she doesn't want to talk about him and asks Rob about his day. Rob chatters away about Deirdre's lack of cooking skills and then realises that Carla is on the verge of tears. Rob comes over and puts his arm round his sister.

"Why?" sobs Carla, breaking down. "Why do I let him get to me?"

Wednesday 9 July

Steve and Eileen are in the taxi office when Gail brings Michael in. Michael starts by thanking Steve for giving him a chance, and asks: "Do I call you Steve? Or Mr. McDonald?" "Steve!" snaps Eileen, so fast Steve doesn't even have a chance to move his lips. Gail wishes Michael luck and leaves him.

Over at the Grimshaw residence, Sean and Jason are eating their breakfast in silence, as Marcus grovels to Todd, apologising for seeing Liam. Todd relishes every moment, laying it on thick and making Marcus feel extremely guilty. They end up hugging to make up and then Marcus goes off to work. "Sorry," he says to Jason and Sean as he leaves, "enjoy your breakfast." "Enjoy it?" says Sean, "I nearly threw it up!"

Carla goes into the cafe and Roy asks how she is. She says she's making a new start and decides to forgo her usual double shot of caffeine for a lime and ginger tea. Roy points out that the ginger has healing properties. Carla says she's thinking of joining a gym as well. Just then Rob and Tracy come in behind her and Tracy makes some cutting remarks about her picking up teenagers. Eventually Carla turns round and tells Tracy she can't see why Rob is with an old, embittered jailbird like her!

At Anna's house, Faye tries to go off to school without anyone seeing her front view. Eventually she has to turn round and they see that she is wearing make up, and has been a bit heavy with the eyeliner and blusher, looking rather like a character from a pantomime. Izzy roars with laughter and Owen tells her to go and take it off, pointing out that she's 12, not 20. Faye argues that she hasn't got time to take it off, she'll be late, so they let her go. Laughing, Izzy says she can't remember the last time she got made up, so Anna suggests that she and Gary have a night out, she and Owen will babysit.

It's going well in the taxi office. Michael, with Eileen beside him, is taking calls. He gets a request for an airport run and Steve jumps up, he's trying to see how fast he can get there, keeping to the speed limits of course! When they're on their own, Eileen guesses that Michael didn't really meet Gail at bingo, and he confesses that they met in prison, after he'd burgled her house.

Izzy goes to the yard to see Gary and tell him they can have a night out. Just then Alya comes past, carrying a pile of fitness magazines. They have a joke and she walks on. Gary and Izzy agree to meet later in the Rovers.

Tyrone and Luke are looking at a car engine when Carla comes along. Tyrone tactfully goes in to make a cuppa. There's a slightly awkward pause, and then Luke tells Carla that they all do stupid stuff. "I just want to thank you for......you know....." she says. "No worries," he replies, but adds that, in case she was wondering, he would have! They agree that nothing happened, nothing is ever going to happen, and that's the end of the story. Tyrone just catches the end of this, and as Carla walks away he tells Luke he knew she knocked him back. Luke doesn't set him straight. (What a gentleman!)

Eileen and Michael have gone to the cafe, and he tells her all about the restorative justice system. He thinks Gail has been so kind, and he really appreciates her friendship. Good people like Gail are hard to come by. Eileen doesn't exactly agree with these sentiments. Just then David comes in and sneers at Michael. "Not feeling the love from the family, I take it?" says Eileen.

Gary and Izzy are in the pub, but don't seem to have much to say to each other. It doesn't help that Eva and Jason are all loved up at the bar.

Gail is walking down the street when a taxi pulls up and Michael gets out. Gail jokes that he's supposed to be the one sending them out to other people. Michael says he's got something for Gail and opens the boot of the car to reveal a large, brand new, flat-screen tv, in it's box. He explains it's to replace the one that Max broke, and he used some of his inheritance. "Inheritance from who?" asks an incredulous Gail. "A distant relative," says Michael. Gail thinks she can't take such an expensive present, but Michael wants to show David and Kylie that he is not just some parasite. He urges her to accept it.

At Eileen's house, Todd is on the phone arranging to meet someone called Johnny. When he's finished the call he's just asking Eileen where his blue shirt is, when there's a knock on the door. It's Marcus, offering to take Todd to the bistro for something to eat. Todd tells him he's not feeling well and wants an early night, and coughs a little for effect. When Marcus has gone, Eileen and Sean stare accusingly at Todd. He blusters that Marcus lied to him about seeing Liam. Eileen tells him that is not the same thing at all and he can't go around playing with people. Todd smirks and goes off for a bath. Sean mutters that he never thought he'd say it, but he thinks he had a lucky escape.

Gail is at home, trying to unpack the tv. She asks a delighted David to help. Then he asks how much it was and where she got it. She says she thinks it was around 200 pounds and reveals that it was a gift from Michael. David is so shocked he drops his end of the tv. He can't see where Michael would get that sort of money, he's sure it must be stolen.

Carla goes into the pub and finds Rob at the bar. Tracy has just gone to the ladies. Rob starts: "Look Carla....." but she stops him and says she's learnt her lesson, she's all humiliated out.

Anna and Owen are trying to settle baby Jake. Anna is sad that after all Gary and Izzy went through to get the baby, it seems like 'that man' has poisoned everything. Owen is sure that Phelan won't destroy Gary and Izzy, they'll pull through.

Gary and Izzy are outside in the Street, eating chips. They sit down on the bench and she says she wants to talk about him and her. She tells him they're broken, she doesn't know how to fix them.

Gail is setting up the tv, as David carries on making disparaging remarks about Michael and his inheritance.

Anna and Owen are talking about their relationship as well as Gary and Izzy's. She asks if he really loves her and he does, and she tells him she loves him, but she needs to take things a bit slow. He tells her to take as long as she wants, he's not going anywhere.

David has been doing some internet research and finds that the tv actually cost 449.00 and not the 200.00 that Gail seems to think. "Mother, will you just wake up?" he says.

Gary and Izzy go back to Anna's house and tell her and Owen that they're splitting up. Owen and Anna are upset at this news. "I guess it broke us all in the end," says Izzy.

Anne Logan.

Thursday 10 July

Good evening. Dead right it should not be me - but we have an extra episode this week so in lieu of getting on with some other jobs (how many more times can I put off my tax return I ask) I am back at the computer keyboard and hopefully recalling events in Weatherfield.

One diversion this week was a visit to Dorset and the Swanage Railway which is a steam railway which meanders from Swanage to Norden, which frankly is in the middle of nowhere but close to Corfe Castle, and is bus served thank goodness. At the end of next year the line will be linked operationally to the National network at Wareham once again and it will be a lot easier to reach. In the meantime explore - Swanage, the railway and Corfe Castle, a very beautiful corner of this wonderful land. The sun shone. Eddystone was heading the train and all was going to well until the return bus was late reaching the station. However the South West Train gods were obviously on my side - the train was sitting in the station well past departure time and I caught it. Whatever the reason for the late departure my thanks to those concerned who got me home on time.

In Manchester tonight events were from the hand of Martin Allen, whilst ordering the players around was Tim Finn, with copyright the property of ITV to whom many thanks for allowing this to be recorded for you.

We open at the Grimshaws where Todd is bidding farewell to someone he met last night. They kiss in front of Sean and the visitor leaves. Todd refuses to answer Sean's questions on the identity of the visitor. Todd is hungry and Sean threatens to tell Marcus - which does not seem to scare Todd at all. Sean is bemused.

Along at the Platt's David is going on about the tv probably be knocked off to Gail who says she is seeing Michael at lunchtime. Kylie returns from taking Max to school - she has fixed the trip to Barbados for tomorrow and David is unhappy - they cannot take Max out of school and he is falling behind. And then there is the salon. Kylie says she and the kids are going anyway and she is not worried about robber, robber man.

In the cafe Izzy and Gary are discussing their split in reasonable and calm terms - she tells him that working must come ahead of flat hunting. Katie comes in for a Danish and wants to know what they are discussing and Anna explains they are splitting up. Katie asks Owen if he can get them to change their mind - not a chance he says.

Audrey is counseling David that he cannot afford to waste the ticket and he should go. David does not want to go away whilst the cat burglar is around - he tells the story of the knock off tv. David reckons that there is always collateral with Gail's loony boyfriends - remember Hillman?

Back in the cafe Marcus has been summoned for a meeting by his boss and he tells Maria that he has had the odd day off. He denies that Todd is at the back of all of this - but goes before Todd catches them talking.

Audrey pops round to check up on Gail and gets the story on the tv - Gail will see him and try to work out if he is a liar or not. Anyway - it is not as if Gail has huge amounts to be stolen anyway.

At the gym Katie is depressed and explains to Alya that Gary and Izzy have split up - but Katie does not know why. Katie says Gary has been acting weird for a couple of weeks since he slept out one night and she reckons that Izzy must have found out. Alya comes clean to Katie that nothing happened but Gary did spend the night with her. She did kiss Gary but that was all and please do not mention it to Kal as within the family that would be very serious. (In reality of course Izzy knows nothing).

At the cafe Owen and Anna tell Izzy that they are going to try and have another go with their relationship. She is made up for them and is glad they are trying again.

Michael meets Gail in the Rovers and Michael reckons that Eileen is a bit of a card. Gail needs to ask Michael about the tv and the inheritance he claimed to have received. Did he buy the tv or did he steal it?

After the break he goes through his story again - but Gail does not believe - she wants to believe him. Either way it is the end of their friendship. He says he did not steal it - but the price he quoted was half the true cost. Gail reveals David checked the online price. Michael gets up and departs - he is giving up.

On the Street Alya says to Izzy that she is sorry they are splitting up and she wants Izzy to know that nothing happened the night Gary stayed with her. This is all a bit fast for Izzy and she wants chapter and verse. Alya realises that she has put her size 14 hob nail boots in her oversized gob. Alya again has to put it in context and ask that nothing is said to Kal. Just a kiss then Gary fell asleep. Alya and Gary were both mortified when she turned up on the Street. Izzy says her secret is safe.

Max is being a bad boy and will not turn the tv down. Max says he hates David and runs upstairs. Gail returns and she relates her discussion with Michael - and Gail feels she has done the wrong thing. And there is nothing between her and Michael.

Faye is briefing Gary on her upcoming party. Izzy comes in and Faye goes out. Izzy challenges Gary with the story and Gary admits to it - but he was not on the pull. Izzy wanted to talk about why they were not working. Gary apologises but it is too little too late. Izzy thinks Gary should move out immediately - she cannot trust him and he must go.

Eva, Julie and Sean discuss summer holiday plans. Marcus comes in and is not sure about Todd as he was not well last night. Todd is feeling better and sends a sweet message to Sean who is dismissive.

Back at the Platts Gail is now telling Audrey about Michael and then they start discussing Nick who is regressing. Anyway Kylie gets David to agree to Barbados and tomorrow it will be pina coladas. The door bell goes and it is Michael - Gail lets him in and he has the proof that he is not a liar. He shows the receipt for buying the television. David says he nicked the cash. Michael also has a solicitors letter confirming the payment of £1836 - so the story is true.

Marcus is telling Todd about the summons to see the boss. Todd invites Marcus back to his place. Sean tells Marcus that he saw Todd kissing another man this morning. Todd wriggles - a mate stayed on the sofa and Todd reckons that Sean jumped to the wrong conclusion. Sean did not see them together last night. Todd denies the kiss. Todd sounds off at Sean about interfering in his relationship.

Gail apologises to Michael and offers to take him for a drink tomorrow. The family cannot believe what they are hearing - Kylie's mouth is about a mile wide. Michael goes and Gail tears them all off a strip for not saying sorry - and she reminds them it was Kylie who wrote the letter which led to this pretty state of affairs.

And that is it for tonight. See you for Friday shortly.
Richard

Friday 11 July

Hello and welcome to the first episode for Friday.

Kylie and David are packing. They appear to be taking more stuff than would fit upstairs. Gail worries about it fitting in the car but Nick says he's borrowed Audrey's. Gail seems more worried about Nick than about David and Kylie and Max and Lily going on holiday. Nick's trying to make sure David's got everything. David is taking travellers' cheques - big mistake. It's all pre-paid cards now, as I found out last time I tried to cash a travellers' cheque.

Todd and Jason have a brotherly niggly argument over the right way to cook toast. Eileen comes down. Todd's phone gets a text but he refuses to look at it because it'll just be Marcus, who sends him texts 20 times a day. It is from Marcus - he wants Todd to wish him luck. Todd refuses and Eileen and Jason can't change his mind.

Izzy leaves Jake with Gary. They agree not to mention Gary's little almost-fling with Alya because Anna and Owen have enough stress. When she's gone, Owen tells Gary he shouldn't have given up so easily on the relationship.

Max is being awkward as they pack the car. He wants in the front and Nick has to drag him into the back. David tells Nick to take care of Gail. He's serious - Nick knows Gail's track record with blokes. Gail comes out to see them off and David warns her not to burn the house down or have wild parties. He says he doesn't trust her and he's got people keeping an eye on her. They drive off and Gail's on the phone before the car has moved off. "Everything all right for tonight?" she asks someone.

Alya is in the Kabin trying to make up her mind which sweets she wants. Carla watches impatiently. Finally she gets to buy her triathlon magazine - she's got a new client who's the north-west Ironwoman champ and she wants to swot up. Norris comments on the strain Carla must be under with this police investigation and Carla says not really. This surprises Norris. Has there been some new development? Carla tells him she knows something pretty crucial to the whole investigation. Norris can't wait to hear the inside gossip. Carla leans forward and tells him: "I didn't do it!"

Marcus has been suspended. Todd tells him it's not the end of the world. He's not homeless, he's not lost his job, and this way they can spend more time together. Marcus is annoyed Todd seems to be making light of it but Todd says he's just trying to look for the silver lining. "There is no silver lining," Marcus says. This is a wake-up call - no more late nights, no more partying, no more blowing money away. Todd changes tack. He thinks Marcus looks all worked up and tense. What he needs is a night out - just for a meal or a club to cheer him up and help get things in perspective. Marcus refuses. That's what got him into all this. "Right now every penny counts." Todd suggests maybe Marcus could spend a bit of time with Liam while he's off work. Marcus is startled that Todd would suggest this. Todd says if he can't cheer up Marcus, maybe Liam can. He points out Maria having a conversation with Roy at the counter.

At the garage, Luke's on the phone. It turns out his mate has just cancelled their night out. They were going to the stockcars. Tyrone loves stockcars and he and Luke agree to go together tonight.

Outside the cafe, Todd calls someone called Johnny and says he is free for lunch after all. Only trouble is, he's skint. "Ooh, that's so sweet of you," he tells Johnny, who must have just offered to pay.

Back in the cafe, Maria and Marcus make arrangements for him to take Liam to the park. He tells her he's happy with Todd and assures her she'll find a special man soon enough. She says she already has. He's five and Marcus is taking him to the park later. "He's the best thing in my life." [Run, Liam, run! This kind of comment usually presages a kidnap story!]

Rob and Tracy settle down for lunch at the bistro. Tracy thinks he should be apologising for neglecting her and spending time with his sister. Carla and her client come in and Rob annoys Tracy by asking if Carla wants to join them. He tells Tracy he knew Carla would refuse. He was just being nice. He has to explain "nice" to her. "It'll never catch on," she says, pushing up her sleeves and revealing THAT bracelet. He spots it straight away and asks where she got it. She tells him about Deirdre finding it. Rob looks shocked.

The more Tracy looks at the bracelet the more she likes it. Rob says she should hand it in. Or more precisely, give it to him so he can hand it to the police. There might be a reward, he says. Tracy says the bracelet is her reward. He suddenly gets antsy about getting back to the shop. Steph comes over and sees the bracelet. She asks for a closer look but Nick calls her back to the bar. Rob tries desperately to get Tracy out of there and back to the shop but it's too late. Steph's come back and demands a closer look at the bracelet. She's sure it's hers. Rob asks for the bill but he's ignored. Steph demands to know where Tracy got the bracelet and Tracy says Rob bought it for her. Nick comes over and Steph tells him her bracelet was stolen and now Tracy's wearing it. Tracy insists Rob bought it from a reputable jeweler. Nick asks Steph for a word. Rob tells Tracy to finish her meal. Tracy refuses. She's not going to rush away - that'll just look as if she's guilty. "You are guilty," Rob says.

Todd and Johnny head towards the bistro and see Jason. Jason wants a word so Todd sends Johnny in to get a table. Jason wants to know if Todd's messing Marcus about but Todd insists the bloke is just a friend. Though he does ask Jason to keep quiet about seeing them.

Gary's playing with Jake in the front garden when Alya comes past and stops to apologise. She thought Izzy already knew about Gary staying overnight with her. Izzy whizzes up in her chair and Gary says there's nothing going on. Izzy doesn't care. Alya says she's always messing up. She's worried Izzy will tell Kal.

At the garage, Steph tells Luke and Tyrone about the bracelet. Tyrone reveals that Tracy's been in prison for murder, but got out on a technicality, and that Rob's been inside too. Luke asks Steph if she wants him to call the police and she snaps that she's perfectly capable. She goes away to do that. Tyrone thinks the whole thing's just brought back memories of Tina's death but Luke's worried enough that he offers his stockcars ticket so Tyrone can go with Kirk. He wants to stay and keep an eye on his sister.

Marcus pushes Liam on the swing and gets a strange call from Todd - Todd's not there. Marcus thinks he must be just getting used to his new phone.

Izzy visits Owen and Owen says he had a word with Gary. Izzy tells him not to. Relationships end. She assures him she's OK and says she won't be relying on anyone else again. She has to toughen up because she's got Jake now. Owen tells her she doesn't have to do it all on her own.

Back in the shop, Rob and Tracy bicker over the bracelet. Tracy insists Steph can't prove it's hers. Rob wants to know why Tracy claimed he bought the bracelet. Tracy says if she'd admitted Deirdre found it, Steph would have thought it was her bracelet. "She already thinks it's hers!" Rob points out. And what if Steph does call the police. Tracy still refuses to hand over the bracelet. Too late. DI Hawthorne and DS Vanner come in and want to ask a few questions, following up a report of a stolen bracelet. Tracy says it's all a misunderstanding. Some people just like to make a fuss. It doesn't matter. She's made to hand over the bracelet, which goes straight into an evidence bag (which isn't sealed or labeled, so that'll never stand up in court). DI Hawthorne asks the sergeant to check the original description of the bracelet. They tell Rob and Tracy the bracelet appears to match the description of one stolen from Tina McIntyre's flat the night she died. "Would you know anything about that?"

Norris peers through the shop window trying to find out what's going on inside. Steph and Luke ask if he's got nothing better to do than poke his nose into other people's business. "I'm a concerned citizen," protests Norris. "You're a nosey parker," says Steph. "Go on, shoo! Go on!" Norris skedaddles out of there. Steph tries to see inside. She wants to go in and see what's happening. It's her bracelet. Luke tries to stop her.

Jason's told Eileen about seeing Todd with Johnny. She suggests maybe they are just friends. Then she sees them coming out of the bistro arm in arm. They stagger down the street and stop to kiss right outside the house - just in time for Marcus to see them from over by the bus stop. He abandons little Liam and races over to shove Todd up against a wall. Todd protests that Johnny is just a friend. Johnny protests that that's not what Todd said last night. Marcus looks as if he's about to bash Todd but Maria calls from across the street. "Marcus, what are you doing?" Marcus looks up and suddenly comes to his senses, realising that he left a small child alone in the street.

Steph bursts into Barlow's Buys and the police tell her this isn't the way they do things. She looks at the bracelet and tells them she can count off every single one - the teapot her mother gave her, the star she got for appearing in a school production. But wait, one's missing. The top hat is gone. "you can see where it's broken off." DI Hawthorne asks if she's sure the bracelet is hers. She is. The police turn to Tracy and Rob. "And you say Mr Donovan bought it for you as a present. So, where did you get it from, Mr Donovan." Rob looks like a pukeko in the traffic* as the ads come up.

The end of the first episode.

*Pukeko - Particularly stupid bird often seen squished on the roads in New Zealand.

Good evening again. That was just 24 hours, so here I am again. No personal news so straight over to Weatherfield where events tonight are technically series 55 episode 134 and were written by Joe Turner, directed by Tim Finn and we thank ITV for their efforts and note their copyright in all of the events recorded.

We commence tonight in the second hand shop where the police are asking Rob about the bracelet which Tracy had been wearing, originally stolen by Rob to make it appear that the death of Tina was a burglary which had gone wrong. Tracy admits her story was made up - Rob did not by it.

Marcus and Todd trade words and Todd breaks up with Marcus. Todd says he a tiny petty jealous little mind he is suffocating and it is not fun any more; Marcus responds by calling him selfish and manipulative (and I reckon that is an understatement). Todd calls him boring! Marcus storms off. Eileen drags Todd indoors.

Eccles is eating dinner and Deirdre is making a brew for Peter (who appears sober). Tracy comes in as Deirdre announces she has made a big cottage pie for dinner. It is Tracy - but followed by the two police and Rob. They want to ask some questions about the bracelet - which Eccles found and which was given to Tracy. The bracelet was stolen - and how was it found in the backyard?

Marcus apologises to Maria for being so stupid - he could have walked away. He has given up everything for Todd - he has been thoroughly used. Marcus is going to leave town - there is nothing left for him here.

The police want statements from everyone and they want to carry out a full search - so all four residents have to leave - there are some b&bs. They have to go.

Eileen is telling Todd off. Marcus was not happy with Maria says Todd - and at least he is not pretending to be straight. Todd tries to make excuses - none of it makes any sense. Todd claims that Marcus used to beat him - but even Sean knows he is lying. Eileen just tells Todd to get out of her sight NOW.

Luke and Katie arrive at Steph's with the intention of trying to cheer her up. She does not nee babysitting she says. They have nowhere else to go - so she is stuck with them.

Tracy says sorry to Rob for saying he had bought the bracelet and then she makes a clean slate of it by telling him that she put some of Tony's dodgy stuff in the shop. They argue. Tracy says they just want to find Tina's killer. Rob says he will take her and Amy to the pictures - he is very nervous.

Izzy finds Gary sitting on Maxine's bench; they agree that the important thing is Jake. Izzy offers for him to move back in. They have got to make a fresh start. They are acting like proper grown ups and proper parents.

In the Rovers the gossips are at work. Dreary cannot find anywhere to lay her head for the night. She also tells them all about the bracelet. Carla denies having anything to do with it - so Norris is convinced it must be Peter. The latter has found two rooms for the night. Dreary wants to know how the bracelet got there - Peter denies all knowledge and he seeks to convince Dreary that he is telling the truth. He cannot believe he is being accused by his step mother.

After the break Peter tells her that the rooms are booked in his name and he is going - Eccles can stay with her. He then sees Norris looking at him and asks if he wants to say something. Peter then tells the whole pub that he did not kill Tina.

Steph and Katie are looking at pictures of Tina. They have a silly discussion over who they fancy. Katie would fancy Carla if she was gay. Steph is upset over the bracelet which she has forever is evidence in connection with Tina's murder.

Eileen comes into the Rovers with Jason and he asks Todd what he wants to drink. Todd and Jason discuss relationships - Todd says Jason has got a good heart. Todd - just gets more bitter more cynical and more cruel adds Jason. Eileen does not want him to go back to London - but feels he needs a challenge so he is occupied and not bored.

Gary and Alya talk and he says that he and Izzy are going to look after Jake. Gary says you cannot pretend things are right when they are not and Alya pays him a small compliment.

Izzy is telling Sean that it is over with Gary.

Tony, Todd and Jason sit down together. Tony reckons that Todd has got the charm to get new business for the builder's yard and perhaps he should work for them.

Gail and Michael are finally have a proper drink and they both apologise to each other. Eileen walks past and Gail asks after Todd - she had heard he had had a fight with his boyfriend. Eileen asks if she can give Michael a word of advice - he says yes and she responds by telling him to run for the hills - get up and run as fast as he can and he must not look back. Any man who spends time with Gail usually ends up dead - Richard Hillman and Joe McIntyre are both mentioned - Brian is not! Eileen cannot imagine the bodies buried under the patio (hand on a minute that was Brookside not Corrie). "Run laddie run" she ends. Gail tells Michael that Eileen's family are a disaster zone. Lazy, selfish, mean. We have 'istory me and 'er says Gail. "Really bad history". Michael nods in acknowledgement. Michael accepts an apology for her outburst.

Out back Tony spells out to Todd how he could use his talents for the business. Tony reckons the three of them could be a good team and it is not Eileen's idea.

Steph is telling some of the history of Tina's story in recent months. They re-assure Steph that she did the right things.

Jason is talking to his mum about working with Todd. Marcus and Maria come in and Todd apologises - and Marcus is sorry he let Todd get away with it. Marcus announces his departure and he is gone!

Gail is explaining some of her history with men and she wonders if she gives out the wrong signals. Michael says that she needs to press the reset button. We should forget the mistakes and make a new start. She says she feels better already. Michael has to go before his tag alerts that he is not at base.

Tracy and Rob return and bump into Carla outside number 1. Carla is glad that they found the bracelet - it should mean that Tina's killer can be caught. And next to her Rob shuffles very uncomfortably.

Well what have learned this evening?

1. Todd is not to be trusted under any circumstances ever.
2. Gail and Eileen have history (just in case you are new to the programme)
3. Eccles likes his food.
4. The police have evidence of ill doing by a resident at number 1. So Peter did do it.
5. Alya seems to want to spend time with Gary; at the moment there is something that the actress does not have quite right for the person she is playing ... but the fit is not right in view.

See you next week.
Richard

Monday 14 July

Written by Chris Fewtrell
Directed by Ian Bevitt

The police are swarming over Number 1. Rob is not looking happy but Tracy blames it all on Tina, still causing trouble. She makes a lame joke relating to her stiff neck (from sleeping on Carla's sofa) but Rob snaps at her. Carla reckons Tracy might want to hold off from buying that wedding dress.

In the cafe, Deirdre is scratching and thinks the B&B is full of fleas or bedbugs. Peter hopes they can get back in their house later. Peter thinks the bracelet got dropped in the ginnel and got kicked under their gate. He thinks he'll need to talk to Simon to reassure him. Peter's very down on himself, figures everyone thinks he's guilty and there doesn't seem to be anything that would persuade them all otherwise. Deirdre is heartbroken.

Julie leads Marcus out of the flat and hopes he's doing the right thing. Marcus already has a cab booked. Julie chirps good morning to Peter who's heading to Leanne's to see Si but he just sneers. "Courtesy costs nothing" Julie utters, sadly, at the state of the world. She continues to tell Marcus that lots of people care about him but he figures he should get while the getting's good. Maria comes round the corner so Julie leaves them to it. Maria has a photo of Liam for Marcus and offers to send him more. They express regrets and agree it was a mistake. She gently says goodbye. Marcus' face is very much filled with regret.

Leanne folds her arms defensively when Peter says he wants to talk to Simon. She's not so sure that's a good thing but allows it. She tells him to back off if she says. Simon comes out, face in his hand held game. He ignores his father's attempts at conversation. Peter attempts to talk to him about the situation and assures him he didn't hurt Tina. Simon reluctantly puts the game down when asked but can hardly look his father in the eye. Peter insists he's innocent and the police will find out who really did it. He promises he won't be going to jail. Ever. Virtually ensuring he will because that's a Phrase of Doom, isn't it, and the wrong person always gets banged up on soaps at first before the guilty party gets nicked in the end. Simon breaks down and hugs his dad.

Eileen is out of shampoo, Todd has a smart mouth. She wants rent, he doesn't have it yet, but assures her that when he gets paid, she will as well.

Sophie leaves Maddie a voice message asking if she's coming back. Ever? Doesn't sound like she's heard too much from her. Leanne is waiting to be served and is short with Sophie but apologizes. Leanne tells her that Nick's revenge is wearing her. She says Kal has been great and offered to take her out but she's not got a sitter. Sophie volunteers (what about Peter? ah, wait, the drinking, I suppose. Can't trust him) because she's at a loose end and Leanne is happy to accept.

Gary and Jason are loading a van. Tony orders them to get a move on and Gary questions who the boss is. It's supposed to be Jason but even he is wondering. Tony apologizes and puts his enthusiasm down to wanting the business to work. Todd struts along to report for his first day but he's late. Todd promises to be on time tomorrow and turns to Tony who proceeds to encourage Todd into drumming up business. Todd reminds him he doesn't have a lot of knowledge but Tony doesn't think that's all that important because Todd has a silver tongue. Well, he's got that right, at least, and he knows how to flatter Todd. I reckon Tony knows exactly how to play Todd.

Norris is watching the police come and go while Tim does the Kabin windows. Leanne comes along and Norris asks if she knows what's going on. Leanne doesn't leave much of Norris' head left on his shoulders as she snaps at him about being a gossip. Right little Miss Sunshine, isn't she? Rita comes outside and bashes Norris a bit for skiving as well. Tim has a joke at Norris' expense about taking up curling, after the hour he's been sweeping the same stretch of cobbles. Norris isn't fooling anyone but Rita asks if anything has happened.

In the pub, Dennis is moaning to Julie about trying to persuade Rita to have him back. He reckons he might have been more successful if Norris hasn't been influencing her. Julie advises him to focus on Rita and ignore Norris. Lloyd returns from holiday, Andrea now by his side. He's brought Steve a snow globe with a cross eyed donkey in it. Lloyd says the holiday was brilliant but it's good to be home and he missed Andrea. He's sticking to her like glue, a sentence that doesn't seem to please her.

Deirdre chats to Tracy about this and that with a funny exchange where Deirdre mused that she'd hoped Tracy would be musical. Tracy reminds her that she played the recorder in school. "Not so's anyone wanted to listen" admonishes Deirdre which cracked me up. That reminds Tracy about the possibility of hiring musicians for the wedding but Rob reminds her they don't have it in the budget. Rob is in a miserable mood but puts it down to no sleep. The police inspectors come in and want to talk to someone again. There have been developments, the missing charm was found. In the outhouse. Difficult for it to be kicked from the ginnel into there. Rob loses all colour in his face.

After the break, they have been told nobody knows how it could have got there and confirmed the outhouse door is never locked as there's never anything particularly valuable in there, just old paint. The police point out that a stranger wouldn't have known the door would be open and why risk being seen stashing the stolen goods where they'd probably have to return for them later. Tracy takes offence at a vague implication that she could know something about it. Why would i kill Tina then wear the stolen bracelet, she points out, rightly so. Rob steers the conversation in Peter's direction.

Peter is coming out of the cafe at that moment. Carla has come home after looking at a flat in Victoria Court and she's going to put in an offer because she wants to get out of the flat and the memories. She's telling all this to Peter and tells him that she'll let him know when she can move out. She asks him about the stolen bracelet. She hopes he's telling the truth when he says he knew nothing about it before Deirdre found it.

Todd is pouring on the charm to a customer over the phone when Gary and Jason return from Tile Street and they see he's successful in booking a client for a roof inspection. He puts down the phone and gripes about the chatty old lady. Tony says he did good and Todd skips out to use the loo. Gary goes down stairs again, leaving Todd to tell his father that he doesn't trust Todd and doesn't want his own reputation trashed. Tony argues that Todd deserves a break and they can help each other. He promises to keep a sharp eye on Todd and he'll be sacked at the first dodgey sign.

Lloyd explains that holidays were good for getting perspective. You realize what's important. He asks Andrea if she's thought more about moving in. I'm sure she has but I wouldn't say she was too happy about it.

Tim asks Sophie to come across for tea tonight as Sally is missing her (Sophie is still living at Kevin's). No can do, Sophie is babysitting for Leanne but behind Sophie, Tim spots Maddie coming round the corner and unlocking the door to Number 13. Sophie runs across and exclaims that she could have met her at the bus station. Maddie just sniffs rudely and goes inside.

Dennis comes into the Kabin which is seemingly empty. Rita comes from the back room, and seems a bit upset. Steph wants Rita's help sorting through Tina's things to send to her mother. Dennis offers to help and his offer is accepted. Rita gets tearful about Tina, dying so young. He goes round and puts his arms around her, trying to comfort her and offering to make her a cup of tea.

Over the road, Maddie is surly and upset but it turns out she is sad because Ben is really happy and will have a great life. Sophie doesn't understand and Maddie doesn't elaborate, sloping off upstairs to unpack, not willing to talk to Sophie. When Sophie asks if she'll help her babysit, Maddie just whirls around and runs upstairs.

In the pub, Eileen is surprised that Todd has done a good job chasing up potential customers. Tony offers to get the drinks in but Eileen rushes them out the door because she's got something on for their tea. She thanks Tony for taking Todd on.

Marcus is saying goodbye to Liam with a hug and kiss. Todd comes out and sees them and is sarcastic. He and Marcus trade insults. Maria advises him to ignore Todd. They have a nice hug goodbye, watched by Todd across the road. Marcus says goodbye and walks to the taxi. He makes eye contact with Todd who looks a bit bothered but Marcus is just resentful.

Over by the Kabin, Rita is on her way to Steph's but Norris is harassing her about Dennis.

Tracy is banging on to Rob about the police. They spot Peter and Rob immediately has a go at Peter, accusing him of killing Peter. Leanne sees this start up and pulls Simon away but the police come out of Number 1 and approach the arguing men. The inspector wants a word... (with whom? stay tuned to find out)

It seems Peter is now the one the police are after. One officer relieves him of his fish and chips while another packs him into the back of the waiting car. Unfortunately half the residents of Coronation Street happen to be walking past at that precise moment, including Simon who is traumatised by the sight of his dad being arrested. Rob says it was inevitable but Tracy says she was dreading this moment. She just doesn't get it, she's sure Peter's innocent. She's also sure she'd recognise a murderer if she saw one. Well of course she would: as the saying goes, it takes one to know one.

In the Rovers, Lloyd is still on at Andrea to move in with him. Michelle drags Steve off so the two of them can have some privacy. Lloyd doesn't get what the problem is. Doesn't Andrea love him? She assures him she does, she just needs some more time 'to sort stuff out' but she keeps Lloyd sweet by telling him that 'no' has now turned into 'maybe' and that she'll go and call her landlord.

Dennis and Rita have arrived at Steph's flat to help her sort out Tina's things. Rita is distraught and says that if Peter is guilty she hopes he never sees the light of day again as he's wrecked so many lives.

Michelle goes out to the back of the Rovers where she finds Andrea sitting in the smokers' corner. She asks if she's got cold feet about moving in with Lloyd. Andrea assures her she hasn't but says she has other people's feelings to consider. Michelle assumes she's talking about her daughter and tells Andrea that, at age 20, she has her own life to lead and won't be as worried about it as Andrea thinks. She adds that life is too short and that she shouldn't let other people stand in the way of what she wants to do. She leaves Andrea looking thoughtful.

A distraught Deirdre is confronting the mess left in the house by the police search team. As if she wasn't upset enough already, Tracy and Rob arrive home and Tracy breaks the news about Peter's arrest. This tips Deirdre over the edge and Tracy shows remarkable sympathy given what she's usually like. Deirdre sobs that Peter looked her straight in the eye and told her he was innocent. The camera focuses on Rob's face and we see his eye begin to twitch. Could he be on the verge of cracking?

Down at the police station Peter is being questioned. He's accompanied by a lawyer who's about as much use as Peter's abandoned fish and chip paper. He remains silent while Peter is asked about the bracelet. Peter continues to insist he knows nothing about it or how it came to be in the outhouse. So why did it have his fingerprints on? Peter says he must have picked it up at some point, he really can't remember but he continues to insist what we, the viewers, know to be the truth - he's innocent. (If I'd been his lawyer I would have asked at this point how it's possible to take meaningful fingerprints from a charm bracelet, not to mention identifying Peter's from amongst all the handling it must have had since he picked it up. Unfortunately for Peter a) I'm not a lawyer and b) he didn't think to call me).

Meanwhile in the Rovers Carla's talking to Michelle about Peter. As she points out, the police arrested her but it didn't mean she did it. It's clear she has her doubts about Peter's guilt but Michelle advises her not to think about him.

Andrea comes back into the bar after supposedly calling her landlord and Lloyd is anxious to know what he said. Andrea hesitates for a moment and then tells Lloyd he said she can move out. Lloyd's ecstatic - that means she can move in with him. Andrea looks slightly panicked and tries using some delaying tactics - she has to give a month's notice. No problem, says Lloyd, the landlord only wants her rent, it doesn't stop her staying with him straight away. Andrea says he'll need to break the news to Jenna and she'll have to tell her daughter. She adds that she's going home now - after all, if she's moving in with Lloyd, she'll have lots of packing to do!

Back at the nick, the police continue to interrogate Peter. Hearing their version of events it doesn't sound too good. He wanted Tina out of his life, they had a row, she scratched his face and a short while later she was found half dead. And then there's the fact that he was spotted in the ginnel. Peter says he went there for a smoke, his nerves were shot to pieces. So can he account for his movements the rest of that evening? Well no, he can't because he went out drinking and of course he can't remember a thing that happened after that.

In the Rovers, all the talk is of Peter's arrest. Todd tries pointing out that the bracelet on its own doesn't prove anything but Norris claims to know far more on the subject since he was the one who spotted Peter in the ginnel. Then Kal comes in and puts them all in their place. He says that Simon's at home sobbing his heart out because he saw his father being carted off in handcuffs earlier and that if they all cared so much for Tina they should stop gossiping and show some respect for her memory.

We return to Peter's interrogation. The police tell him that with the list of evidence pointing at him he needs to come up with something if he's going to convince them he's innocent. His lawyer finally speaks and tells him he doesn't need to answer that. But Peter continues to talk and says that however much he may have wanted Tina out of his life he cared about her and would never have hurt her. At that moment there's a knock on the door and the interview is paused.

Back on the street, Maddie is moping on the bench outside the salon when Tim comes along. He joins her and they start to chat. Maddie opens up about why she's upset. Her brother Ben has found a wonderful home in Devon with a perfect foster family but he was really upset when she left. She can't keep coming and going in his life, she says, it's not fair on him. Tim understands - he says it's like him and Faye. Except he lives just round the corner, Maddie points out, whereas she and Ben live miles apart. She's made a decision about what to do but she asks Tim not to say anything to Sophie. As if on cue, Tim leaves and then Sophie turns up with a couple of kebabs. She joins Maddie on the bench and Maddie apologises for the way she was with Sophie earlier.

Andrea arrives home and we see her hastily putting her wedding ring back on as she walks through the front door. She's greeted by her husband clutching a casserole dish and a table laid with flowers and candles. Andrea puts on her panicked expression again and tells her husband she's really knackered and is too tired to eat so she thinks she'll go and have an early night, making it quite clear she's not expecting him to join her. By my reckoning it's all of about 6 o'clock in the evening so I can't help feeling that even the thickest of men would have some suspicion by now that all was not right.

Meanwhile, equally oblivious to Andrea's double life, Lloyd is discussing with Michelle and Steve what he's going to do to spruce up his flat for when she moves in. He thinks he may buy a couple of Yucca plants. Norris suggest a bonsai tree which gives Steve the opening to joke that he hopes that doesn't mean there's a full-sized version of Norris wandering around somewhere. Michelle says she thinks Andrea and Lloyd make a lovely couple. Steve's surprised at her change of heart but Michelle admits they just got off on the wrong foot. Steve is concerned for his friend that things will work out for the two of them, given his track record with women but Lloyd is confident that things are different this time round. He knows where he is with Andrea and says they're both going into it with their eyes wide open. Oh dear. Oh dear, oh dear.

Rita and Dennis are walking along the street together. He's carrying a box containing Tina's possessions. He offers to post it off to Tina's mother in the morning. Rita's grateful and asks if he'd like to come in for a brew. She tells Dennis that she doesn't know what she'd have done without him these last few weeks. Dennis says what she needs is a hug and he would oblige if he wasn't carrying a box. "So put it down," suggests Rita. Norris comes out of the Rovers at that moment and, to his horror, looks across the street to see Dennis kissing Rita and taking her in his arms.

Round at the Barlows' Deirdre has gone up to bed after calling Ken. Tracy sits down and talks to Rob. She's become remarkably caring about her family, all of a sudden. She's worried about her dad. He has a grandson at death's door and a son arrested for murder she tells Rob and it will break Ken if he's sent down. And then there's poor Simon - his life's ruined before it's even begun. Rob tells Tracy she's getting way ahead of herself, they haven't even convicted Peter yet. "Yeah, well you have," says Tracy. Rob claims he's only guessing, the same as the police. "I don't know who did it. Not for certain. How could I?" asks Rob.

Back at the police station, Peter has been waiting for an hour. Finally the two officers come back in. It seems forensics have uncovered some more evidence. There was dried blood in the outhouse where the bracelet was found and it matches Tina's, giving them reason to believe it's where the murder weapon was concealed. Peter is given the opportunity to add to his statement but he has nothing further to say. In that case, they tell Peter, he needs to go downstairs where they're going to charge him.

"You can't do this, you can't do this!" cries Peter as another policeman comes in and slaps on a pair of handcuffs.

Wednesday 16 July

We open with Peter, asleep in a cell. A police officer comes in, puts a tray of food down, and goes out again. Peter wakes up and looks worried.

Deirdre is also looking worried. When she learns that Peter will be in court later today, she asks Tracy to go with her. Rob tries to tell her that it's time she faced facts, but she just stares at him for a moment and then goes to get ready.

Rob decides to take Eccles for a walk, and meets Carla. Just then Leanne and Simon come around the corner, and Simon takes Eccles off for a little walk. Carla and Rob then tell Leanne that Peter's been charged, and Leanne gets very upset, assuming that Peter must be guilty and has lied to Simon when he said he didn't do it.

Inside the factory, the word is just getting round about Peter being charged, when Carla walks in and everyone goes silent. Carla guesses that they've all heard the news. Beth says that it gives her the creeps to think that a killer like that was in their building. Carla tells her that the only person to be frightened of is her, so Beth had better get stitching! As they all go to sit down, Sally takes Beth to one side and says she should apologise for wanting to get Carla arrested. Beth protests that she wasn't serious.

Peter is seeing his lawyer, who is explaining that Peter will be taken to the magistrates' court and then remanded in custody until the trial at the crown court. Peter asks if they can't try for bail - what about being innocent until proven guilty? The solicitor says it's highly unlikely he will get bail.

In the Kabin, Rita suspects that a very quiet Norris is giving her the silent treatment. She tells him it's bliss, keep it up all day. Norris then decides he has something to say - he was upset to see her with Dennis last night, he thinks Dennis is using Rita's grief as a Trojan horse and she can't see it. Rita says it's now her turn to give him the silent treatment, and she turns her back on him!

Tracy and Deirdre are just about ready to go to the court. Rob offers to give them a lift, if they're both so hell-bent on going. Deirdre says that she knows Rob never liked Peter, but he is part of the family.

Steve goes into the taxi office with an unopened envelope - his exam results. He's sure he's failed. Eileen snatches the envelope and opens it, and Lloyd reads out his results - he's passed with a Grade C. Steve is much relieved and asks Lloyd what Andrea got. Lloyd doesn't know.

Back in the Kabin, Norris says he doesn't want to see Rita humiliate herself again. Just then Rob, Tracy and Deirdre come in for mints and magazines. They explain that they're going to see Peter in court, and Norris says he hopes they lock him up and throw away the key. Rob gets very defensive and says if they wanted his opinion they would have asked for it. Norris starts sounding off again, but Rob shouts at him to keep his trap shut, and marches out of the shop.

Lloyd is trying to get hold of Andrea, but not getting any reply. He tells them he's been making room at his flat for Andrea's stuff when she moves in. Just then, Andrea bounces in, she's passed with a Grade A! She says they should celebrate, and suggests getting all the class to the Rovers later.

Sophie is talking to Maddie in the cafe, saying how Leanne has asked her to look after Simon later as she's having a nightmare time with Nick. Unfortunately, Nick is also in the cafe and hears all this. "Is she now? Poor Leanne!" he says, loudly. Sophie is embarrassed and apologises. She then asks Maddie if she'll go with her, but Maddie, who is being more prickly than usual, says no.

Peter is in his cell at the court house. The solicitor comes to see him and tells him he'll be taken to prison until the trial, which will be in about 3 months time. He says they will get the best barrister they can to put his defense forward - assuming Peter pleads 'not guilty'. Peter is shocked. He didn't do it, his solicitor does believe him, doesn't he? His solicitor says of course he does, but says that he might want to plead guilty to a lesser charge. Peter is outraged, he wants people on his side, people who will fight for him, not people who will haggle and try to cut a deal. He then sacks his solicitor, he doesn't want him to represent him.

Lloyd is in the cafe, talking excitedly to Jenna about Andrea moving in. Should he give the place a lick of paint? Buy a new settee?

Maddie tells Sophie that she's not going to contact Ben any more, it's stopping him from settling down where he is. Sophie asks why she doesn't go and live down in Cornwall close to him. "Would you come with me?" asks Maddie. "My life is here," says Sophie. Maddie says that hers is too.

Steve is in the pub, showing Michelle his exam result. She's amazed that he passed. "Why? Did you think I was thick?" he asks. She says no, she thought he was skiving. Carla comes in then, and tells Michelle how Peter is in court today and that Tracy and Deirdre have gone to watch. Carla can't believe that the man she married is capable of murder. Michelle thinks it is all the fault of the booze. Beth comes in then, and comes up to Carla and says that she never really doubted her. Carla thanks her brusquely and then sends her back to her machine.

Andrea arrives home to her husband. He's trying to make an effort and suggests ordering a takeaway and opening a bottle of wine. She tells him she's going out to meet her mates from college to celebrate the exam results. Then she goes off to get changed.

Carla calls Sally into the office and says she's been going through the applications for the PA job, and there is only one candidate suitable - Sally!

The classmates are all in the pub, when Andrea comes in. Lloyd gives her a packet of pork scratchings, and inside is a key to his flat! She's overwhelmed and says she needs air.

Leanne and a sad looking Simon are on the bench in the Street. Nick comes along and Leanne tells him she's worried about Simon. Nick offers to have word with him, and then sits down and tells him he's got a new game for the PS4. Would Simon like to come round tomorrow? Simon brightens up and says he would. Leanne gives him the door key and sends him home, saying she'll be there in a minute. She turns to Nick and asks if he thought changing the name of the bistro would airbrush her out of the picture. He tells her she lost her claim when she jumped into bed with 'soldier boy'.

A taxi pulls up outside the Rovers, and Andrea, who is still outside, is shocked to see Neil, her husband, get out of it. He'd thought he would surprise her! (He did that!)

Dennis goes into the pub to see Norris. He tells Norris to back off - or face the consequences.

Lloyd is at the bar, wondering why Andrea hasn't come back inside. Outside, Neil is telling her that he thought he'd come and try to salvage something of their relationship. She puts him off going into the pub for a drink by telling him that she's got a headache and would like to go home. She walks off with him round the corner and out of sight just as Lloyd comes out. He looks up and down the Street, but she's nowhere to be seen. He's baffled!

Norris scrubs the paper boy outside the Kabin. The boy appears to be covered with curry sauce or gravy. Norris addresses the boy as if he's real, saying he'd better get him cleaned up before Rita sees what someone's done. Dennis, carrying some milk, steps out of the corner shop and sees this. He ridicules Norris for talking to the boy but Norris says he'd rather spend time with the boy than with Dennis. Dennis asks what spiteful little schemes Norris has been dreaming up. "My marriage is none of your business," he says. Norris laughs. Dennis says he'll be back in Rita's life by sundown. "You'll see." Norris says he will indeed, "but you won't be!"

Michelle's in the Kabin buying batteries for the clock and for the TV remote. She doesn't know the size so she takes a packet of each - more money than sense, obviously! She says the clock's been stopped for months but Steve won't do anything about it. Now that the remote needs batteries, though, he's keen to get some. Norris comes inside and Rita asks what all the shouting was about. "Your estranged husband - he was goading me again," Norris tells her. "Apparently your marriage is none of my business. I don't know what you saw in him." To his horror, Rita agrees with Dennis - her marriage is none of Norris's business. Norris claims he was just looking out for her. Rita says there's no need. She can fend for herself. Norris is very grumpy now and goes out the back with his bucket.

Steve's in the taxi office with Eileen and Lloyd. He tells them that over breakfast Amy asked if he thought Uncle Peter killed Tina. He doesn't know what she's hearing next door. Apparently Simon's gone silent and won't talk to anyone. Lloyd seems very glum and Steve asks about Andrea's disappearance from the pub. Lloyd says she said she had a migraine.

At Andrea's house, Neil's looking for his maggots so he can go fishing. "Were you ashamed of me last night?" he asks. Andrea says she had a headache then tells him the students had agreed there'd be no partners. He suggests they go out later. She agrees, though not enthusiastically. "Love you," he says as he leaves. Andrea just smiles at him.

Tracy's doing her nails. Rob asks what's wrong and she says Deirdre rang Peter's solicitor this morning for an update, only to discover Peter had sacked him. Tracy thinks maybe he's thrown in the towel. But if he's no longer lying then he'll get a lighter sentence. "True," says Rob, looking thoughtful.

Emily's in the cafe collecting for a jumble sale. They're particularly interested in books, she tells Roy. Roy says he cherishes his books. "I'm a big re-reader." Anna isn't. When she finishes a book she gives it to Izzy or puts it in one of the charity bags that come through the door. This annoys Roy. She should use the library. "Not enough people do." He tells Emily that Hayley had a weakness for airport fiction. He'll see what he can find upstairs.

Michelle puts new batteries in the clock - though Steve says he's so used to not trusting it that chaos is likely to ensue. Michelle's thinking of buying a moving in present for Lloyd and Andrea, even though Lloyd already lives there. Steve hands over five pounds and is disgusted when Michelle says that's not enough. He gives her a tenner.

Lloyd is cleaning his flat so thoroughly he's likely to get some sort of chemical poisoning. He's doing it one-handed because the other holds the phone. "Do you want me to come over and help?" he asks Andrea. He says she should hurry. She can fetch the rest later. He's got a toaster and microwave. All she needs to bring is herself. "See you soon," he says.

In the shop, Leanne asks Sophie to sit for Simon for a couple of hours later on. She offers her a tenner, with a bonus fiver if she can get Simon to talk.

Deirdre fusses around clearing away the breakfast things. She tells Tracy they have to get moving and then collapses in tears because she doesn't want to go to visit Peter. Tracy tells her that even if Peter killed Tina in cold blood they've got to stick by him. The phone rings. It's Ken and Deirdre rejects the call. "I'll ring him later. We haven't got time now," she says. Why Ken would be calling between 1am and 5am Canadian time, I have no idea.

Michelle's taken the first booking for the Kombi van - a couple who are getting married in September 2015. She asks what Steve's going to wear. She's thinking of offering clients the choice of Steve in a chauffeur's uniform or dressed as a surfer dude in a Hawaiian shirt and a straw hat. "What am I? Huckleberry Finn?" asks Steve. Michelle doesn't understand why he's being so negative. They're on their way. She wants him to show more ambition. Steve's only plan for the future is to go off to the Cash and Carry. "Don't forget the crisps. We're completely out," she calls after him, not seeing him take a packet of crisps from his back pocket.

As Steve goes out the back, Andrea comes in the front door and asks Michelle if she has a minute. "What's wrong?" asks Michelle. "Everything!" says Andrea.

As Roy sorts out the books for Emily, he finds a very overdue library book written by someone giving advice on coping with cancer. Luckily, the Weatherfield library, unlike all the others, still stamps a date in the book, otherwise he'd have to go hunting for that little slip to find out when it's due.

In the smoking area, Andrea tells Michelle she's married. "If you look close enough you can see the indentation," she says, waving her fingers in front of Michelle. She tells Michelle about Neil working away and says she got bored when their daughter went away to college so she signed up for an evening class. She ended up sitting next to Steve and he made her laugh. He was someone to talk to and he wasn't Neil. She admits she had a bit of a crush on Steve at first, but Michelle knows that. "He was a mate." Under her breath, Michelle mutters, "Not any more he won't be!" Andrea says Lloyd is way more than that. "I didn't plan this. I didn't want to do this. And now I'm stuck trying to juggle two worlds. It can't go on. My husband knows something's not right." Michelle can't understand why Andrea's come to her. Andrea says all her other friends know Neil and she knows they'd try to talk her out of this. "And I don't want to be." Michelle says Lloyd's expecting Andrea to move in. "He's been round to borrow some Pledge!" Andrea has to make her mind up and fast. Andrea asks if Michelle's going to say anything. "I will if you don't get it sorted," warns Michelle.

In the Kabin, Emily and Rita talk about Norris sulking because Dennis gave him a bit of an earbashing. "I can hear you, you know!" shouts Norris from out the back. Emily thinks Rita should make Dennis and Norris fight a duel but Rita thinks the world should be spared the sight of Norris in tight trousers waving a pistol. Emily says Norris was only defending Rita's honour but Rita repeats that what's left of her honour doesn't need defending. She admits she'd hate to see Dennis back on the streets and is glad he's staying with Julie. Rita changes the subject to a TV programme called The Coast With The Most. Tonight it pits Tenby against Weymouth. They agree that Whitby losing out to Sheringham last week was a travesty!

In the cafe, Anna reads the blurb from a novel called Love On The Piste. Roy's loading up a bag of books. He says Hayley was well aware of the literary limitation of that sort of novel - that was part of their appeal. Eileen looks at the cancer book and Roy explains it's an overdue library book. He doesn't plan to explain to the library but will pay the fine. Anna asks if she can keep the ski romance book. As Roy goes off with the rest, Ann and Eileen exchange sympathetic looks.

Andrea's back at home and so is Neil with a couple of fish. He thinks life's not so bad. He's had an enjoyable day. Andrea says they have to talk. He wants to put away the maggots first but she tells him No.

Emily meets Rob outside her door. He says "the girls" have gone to see Peter. Dennis comes along with some books he says he thinks were Brian's. Of course, it's just a ruse so he can ask Emily about Rita. He supposes Norris is trying to give him a bad name. Emily says Rita is very loyal. She says Rita will forgive Dennis in time. And Rita's glad Dennis isn't on the streets but is with Julie. "She said that?" asks Dennis. Emily confirms it and goes indoors, leaving Dennis looking very thoughtful.

Lloyd has a bunch of flowers and looks thoughtfully at his car.

Andrea's told Neil she's leaving him. He can't understand why and thinks they could try more. He'll get a local job. But Andrea says it's too late. She's tried. Neil's upset. "You can deny it all you like," he says. "There must be someone else." There's a slight pause before Andrea shakes her head. "There's no-one else. I wouldn't do that to you."

Deirdre and Tracy sit with Peter in the prison visiting room and to make conversation, Deirdre asks if he's met anyone nice in there. She says she rang his solicitor. "I don't have one," he says. Deirdre says she discovered that and she's worried he's given up. "Are you pleading guilty?" Tracy asks. He says he fired the solicitor because he wanted Peter to plead guilty. "You both think I did it, don't you?" "What are we meant to think?" asks Deirdre. "If you didn't do it, why get rid of your solicitor?" Tracy asks him straight out whether he killed Tina. "You really think I could do that?" he asks in horror.

Simon is with Sophie and Maddie but he's not even answering direct questions from Sophie. Maddie reckons she'll get him talking with five minutes. The doorbell rings. It's Lloyd. He asks whether Tim is in (he isn't) and whether he ever lends out his van.

Roy is back. The library refused to take back the book because they're closing. down. He tells Anna it's all about money. "That's all this council cares about. They're turning it into a Freshco's." Anna says Izzy takes Jake to music sessions at the library on a Saturday morning. Roy says they're organising a protest. Anna's phone rings. "Owen, please don't tell me we've got another letter," she says.

Julie has left a camisole half-sewn to rush over the Rovers in answer to an urgent call from Dennis. He tells her Rita can't bear the thought of him living on the streets so he's got a plan. He wants Julie to pretend to argue with him and then throw him out in front of Rita - then Rita will take him in. He knows it's not a particularly good plan and Julie doesn't want to do it. He asks what she plans to do tonight. She wants to finish her book. Dennis wants to watch Coast With The Most, which she hates. He says they can argue about that and create a bust-up. What was the name of the novel? He tells her he's given some books to Emily for the jumble. Julie's furious. "Save that for the row when Rita's watching," he tells her.

Steve's back with a big carton of Dempsey's crisps which are labeled at 20p a bag. I'm assuming that's the wholesale price. "What did you get them?" he asks Michelle, but she's not got Lloyd and Andrea anything. She says she didn't have time. Steve asks what's wrong And is it to do with Lloyd and Andrea? "As soon as I mentioned their names you tensed up," he says. "I'm an expert in body language - I've got a PhD in secrecy. Plus I found Andrea's scarf in the yard," he says. "Michelle. Speak to me." Michelle sighs.

The End
Margaret Carr

Good evening. Well in the UK we are enjoying an outstanding summer this year. In past years I have been hidden in an office and not really been aware of the weather. Liberated from work has meant this year I have had a chance to see the sun and whilst we have not had a BBQ this summer I have had a lovely day at the races and seen the Beach Boys; Henley Festival - sunshine; Welsh holiday - mainly sunshine and very little rain; evening with friends in their garden - so warm and dry; various other outings and much sunshine and warm temperatures. Lovely.

Now over in Weatherfield the world cup seems to have passed by the lads on the Street; perhaps Kev's absence is the cause. This is series 55 episode 139; it was written by Perrie Balthazar, and directed by Ian Bevitt. Copyright remains the property of ITV to whom many thanks.

Michelle takes Steve into the back room and tells him the news - Andrea is married to Neil who is the father of the daughter. Steve - says "Married?" and Michelle explains - joint mortgage, together for over 20 years (is Andrea old enough?), matching slippers, ring on the finger (well in her pocket). Poor Steve is having trouble getting his head around this one. Michelle has told Andrea that she has to tell Lloyd or Steve will. Steve says Lloyd has been hard at it with his feather duster all morning. Michelle thinks Andrea will do it. Steve says she has been lying for months. They go back behind the bar. Michelle greets Lloyd who wants a word with Steve about Andrea.

In prison Tracy is telling Peter that she thinks the evidence proves he is guilty - and he responds by saying that if both Tracy and Deirdre believe he is guilty then the visit is over and he storms out. Well quite, talk about lack of support.

Outside the Rovers Lloyd wants Steve to assist on an errand of collecting Andrea and her belongings. Steve is highly reluctant - but cannot yet tell Lloyd what he knows. Lloyd drags Steve away and they borrow Tim's van. Lloyd has talked to her - she is definitely moving in!

Maddie finally gets Simon involved in conversation by playing his computer game.

Deirdre and Tracy are home and they describe Peter and the events from earlier to Rob who reckons it sounds like the actions of a guilty man. Tracy offers Deirdre a bath and then they will go to the Rovers - but Dreary wants to hide away. Tracy is worried about her mother - but Rob is sure Tracy is strong enough - but Peter has always stood by her when things were difficult. Rob reassures her that he will be around.

Lloyd and Steve arrive at a house. Lloyd knocks on the door and when the door opens some guy opens the door and denies knowing Andrea - it is the wrong house. Steve gets Lloyd back in the van. Steve tells Lloyd that Andrea has been lying and Steve calls her a lying cheating married cow. Lloyd looks completely broken.

After the break Lloyd and Steve discuss the situation - but Lloyd reckons he wrote the address down wrong. Slowly Steve convinces Lloyd of the truth of what he is saying. Lloyd wants some time to himself and Steve gets out of the van.

Maddie, Simon and Sophie are walking down the Street and at least he is talking to them - and also to Eccles to whom Simon gives a big cuddle.

Back in his flat Lloyd is opening the good luck cards and looking at the bottle of champagne when Andrea walks in and they look at each other.

In the Rovers Julie walks in with Dennis's bags and tears him off a strip and tells him to leave her flat forthwith. He has apparently been truly vile. He has outstayed his welcome. She stomps but returns and whispers that she wants the suitcase back at daybreak. Norris tells Rita not even to think about it - but Rita says "one night".

Lloyd shows Andrea the card from Jenna and he gets out the bubbly. Andrea says she wants to talk. Lloyd tells her that he already knows -via Michelle and Steve. Lloyd is pulling up a pew and she can tell a fairytale. She says she is sorry. Lloyd retells the story as he sees it - the single girl is not single. She disputes his version. She is married and she has lied so much it has nearly destroyed her. She does not love her husband - she has not loved him for years. But Lloyd believes it is an unhappy ending - she has brought her stuff and she has left her husband and she should have done it years ago. She admits to doing something terrible - but can they have a happy ending.

In the Rovers Norris does not think that Rita could be so stupid - but she tells him to be careful whom he calls stupid.

Tracy and Dreary come in and of course everyone is watching them. Steve asks after Peter - he is not good is the response. Tracy announces that Peter is a Barlow and the family will be standing by him. Rita says not to worry - they are only concerned about Dreary. Tracy tells Rita she should worry about dodgy Dennis. He is a thief, a tramp, fraud, - a really good catch. And they should all wind their necks in. And Rita tells Norris to keep his nose out of her business - he departs wishing her good luck.

Lloyd and Andrea talk about her life with Neil - it was not miserable - it was OK not good, not bad and she was used to OK and then she met Lloyd and found she was happy again. Neil was a good man and she did not want to break his heart until Lloyd came along - she wants one chance - but Lloyd says she does not get it. They were "IT". And he had promise himself that if it did not work with her - he would give up women - and he has a huge number of questions. He starts asking them - and she has definitely left Neil - he does not think he can ever believe what she says ever again. Andrea then admits that she has told Neil she is leaving - but she has not told him about Lloyd - so she has not told the whole truth. Lloyd picks up her cases and throws them down the stairs and tells her to go.

Lloyd collapses against the door frame crying.

And that is that for this week.

So what have we learned this week?

Andrea is still lying and homeless. I wonder where she will be sleeping next week.
Maddie suddenly has a good side - character transformation under way!!
We know Peter is not guilty - how much time will he serve?
Oh and has anyone thought to tell Ken, after all he is due back soon?
And Julie can be a bit empty headed at times - and that story was all a bit thin.

See you next week.
Richard

Monday 21 July

Written by Chris Fewtrell Directed by Michael Lacey

Owen is still trying to drum up work but isn't successful. His mate, Johnny Marathon may have something coming up if he gets a contract. Faye asks why he's called that. Owen explains it's because he always had a Marathon chocolate bar in his lunch as a kid. Owen opens an upsetting letter.

Deirdre has a letter, too, from the British Legion for Ken to attend a memorial for WWI to represent Uncle Albert. Uncle Albert won a medal, it seems and Amy wants to see it and take it to school for show and tell (do they still do that?). Tracy remembers Albert as a miserable old beggar whom she could never understand. Amy begs, Deirdre gives in and will try to find it. Turns out he saved two men in the war. Tracy reckons their family has now broken even (two murderers to balance off the two lives saved. Typical Tracy callous remark, that!)

Speaking of Peter, he's on his bunk in his cell while his cellmate wipes up his tea mug (plastic) and chattering about how some people can handle prison and some can't. This chap seems quite friendly. He also tells Peter he'll have his own trial soon and expects to be set free. He asks who's waiting for Peter who mutters nobody, he doesn't want to see the ones that there are. His cellmate offers a shoulder if Peter does feel like talking.

Lloyd is moping in the cafe. He tells Anna he's not as hungry as he thought. She takes the plate back and chews on the toast. Gary comes in. Roy clatters about back in where the loos are, trying to fix loose bolts. Gary offers to fix it for the offer of a free bacon barm.

Andrea has packed up her stuff and is leaving. Neil is tearful and heartbroken and insists he's not better of without her. He wants to sort it out but she thinks it is too late. He wants to fight for their relationship, he'll change. She tells him he's decent and she will always care about him. He just doesn't understand what he has done. Her taxi has arrived and he tries to stop her. She wants a clean break but he begs her to stay. He doesn't even care if she's got someone else and wants another chance. All she can do is say she's sorry and she leaves.

Lloyd is outside the office smoking. Sharif and Alya come along and righteously tell him smoking is bad. He's sarcastic. Eileen gives him a hard time as well and takes his packet from him. Even Michael agrees. Lloyd is tetchy and fractious. He finally admits Andrea has a husband, shocking Eileen and Michael.

In the cafe, Sharif and Alya ask for their order "to go" and are summarily corrected by Roy. It's "takeaway". He points out that he abhors Americanisms. Anna remarks that they're lucky they didn't order their eggs "over easy". Roy asks Sharif to put a petition for the library in the gym. We now find out that Sharif's wife, Yasmeen is the chief librarian and is spearheading the campaign to save the library (as a long time habitual library user, why doesn't Roy at least recognize her name? You'd think he'd have met the head librarian wouldn't you?)

Tracy is doing her nails while Deirdre searches for the medal in the sideboard (which also belonged to Uncle Albert. It's one of the few original set pieces left from the early days of Coronation Street). Deirdre expresses worry about Peter. Rob comes in after searching for the medal, too, not wanting to let Amy down. Tracy's not bothered. Deirdre finds it and pulls the box out. She shows it to Tracy who's unimpressed. Rob says he can polish it up. But when Deirdre mentions that old medals like that are valuable these days, her interest perks up.

Andrea approaches Steve on the street but he's reluctant to talk. She's dragging her suitcases behind her. She tells him that she really loves Lloyd and wants Steve to talk to him. Steve doesn't think Lloyd will ever trust her again. She works on him, cries and flings herself into his arms, sobbing. This last bit is seen by Neil who comes around the corner and then moves back, gutted.

In the pub after the break, Steve tells Liz that Andrea was upset. Liz thinks Andrea has some neck showing up. Steve isn't impressed either. Steve is looking at a map trying to work out a quicker route to the airport. Liz points out if he does it quicker, that's less income but he thinks it would leave him time to do more of them. Liz objects. What about the pub? She instructs him to be more proactive drumming up business for the wedding business. By the way, Neil is in the pub keeping an eye on Steve.

Eileen is sympathising with Lloyd in the cab office but reckons she never trusted Andrea. Which is, Lloyd thinks, another way of saying "I told you so". Michael recalls that Andrea has actually left her husband for Lloyd but after he mentions building a rockery for Gail, Lloyd moans that love is never what it says on the tin. He'd be better off to get out while the getting's good. Eileen takes a call for an airport run. Lloyd wants to take it but Eileen says Steve asked for all airport runs. She doesn't want Lloyd to take the job because he's in a bad mood and will spoil the mood of the holiday goers! Lloyd gives up and leaves.

The cafe is busy when Liz is in for a snack. Roy passes her the petition which she signs. She has fond memories of the library near her old school. It was quiet. She and her boyfriend were often chucked out. Sharif comes in as Liz leaves, handing Roy a sheet full of signatures. But as Roy peruses the signatures he can see that there are a number of fictitious names added. Sharif asks if Roy would come to the library to see Yasmeen.

Owen is trying to feed Jake who isn't having it. Owen chats to the baby as he does the washing up, all about getting a decent education. Anna comes in hearing the last of it and tells Jake he should be proud of his Grandad. Owen admits he's had a letter summoning him to bankruptcy court. The worst case is that Owen loses everything including the house. She says they'll survive. He tries to convince himself that a clean slate wouldn't be so bad.

Amy asks Tracy if she can Skype her Grandad on the laptop, I think to ask about the medals. Tracy offers a less than flattering memory of Uncle Albert but is admonished by Rob. He was a war hero, after all. Rob asks Tracy where she was earlier. She won't tell him. Deirdre comes in after work, tired. When she notices Amy about to contact Ken, she panics and shuts the laptop.

Peter's cellmate has come in from a visit with his wife. Peter apologizes for his earlier attitude. No problem, he's told. Peter admits prison is hard and he doesn't want to get used to it. His new mate advises that he's got to make the best of it. Peter tells him that his family think he's guilty and he thinks his dad has washed his hands of Peter.

Deirdre is out back smoking. Tracy asks why Amy can't talk to Ken. Deirdre tries several excuses from Ken still being in bed to him being busy. Rob questions her as does Tracy. Deirdre is reluctant to let Amy bother Ken. But why? Tracy decides to ring Ken so the truth comes out. Deirdre hasn't told Ken about Peter being arrested. None of it.

Neil gets into the back of Steve's car. Steve asks him if he's going to the airport. Hmmmm.

Tvor

Written by Damon Rochefort and directed by Michael Lacey

Steve's cab passenger is acting rather strangely. He claims he's off to the airport to meet his wife who's been away. In an effort to make conversation Steve says "when the cat's away ..." The man - who we know to be Andrea's husband Neil - asks Steve if he thinks he's a mouse.

Lloyd's trying to drown his sorrows in the Rovers but Liz spots him with a bottle of beer and reminds him he's not supposed to be drinking.

Roy comes in looking for signatures for his petition. Liz is surprised when Eva offers to sign it - she never had her down as a reader. Eva asks Roy what he's reading at the moment. He tells her it's a book about the Plantagenets. "What, the band?" asks Eva.

Jenna comes in and she also spots Lloyd with a beer. Liz explains the reason he needs a drink - Andrea's left him. As Jenna's face falls, Lloyd tells her she was right about Andrea all along.

In Steve's cab Neil starts to sing along to the song on the radio: "The female of the species is more deadly than the male". Still unaware of the identity of his passenger but aware he must have issues, Steve decides to change radio stations. Neil asks Steve his name then tries to shake his hand. He asks Steve to turn off the radio so they can talk. Steve has finally had enough of this weirdo and asks him to get out and pick up another cab. Neil gives him a tenner and tells Steve it's been nice chatting to him.

Round at the Barlows' Tracy is laying into her mum for not telling Ken about Peter while Deirdre is laying into a King Edward with a potato peeler. It turns out she and Ken haven't talked about much since he's been away other than the weather and what she's been watching on telly. He doesn't even know about Carla and the baby. Tracy says if her mum won't tell him, she will. Deirdre finally gives in and hands Tracy the peeler while she goes off to make the call.

Anna and Owen have assembled the family to make an announcement. He tells them he's been summonsed and there's a good chance he's going to be declared bankrupt. Faye doesn't look impressed. "So we'll go from being skint to total povs. Great," is how she sums it up.

In the Rovers, Jenna is going on to Lloyd about what she thinks of Andrea. He doesn't need to hear that right now and makes to leave, just as Steve returns.

Liz takes Steve to one side. He wants to tell her all about his weird passenger but Liz isn't interested. All she wants to talk to him about is Lloyd. She tells Steve they must keep Andrea well away from Lloyd as all costs. Steve agrees to have a word with Jenna and promises they'll sort it.

Back at the Barlows' Rob is helping Amy with her school project but they can't find the medal. Tracy tells them to shush - she's trying to eavesdrop on Deirdre's phone call to Ken. Deirdre comes back into the kitchen and admits that Ken was so upset when he heard Peter had been drinking again she couldn't bring herself to tell him about everything else. And she has some news. Adam is on the mend so Ken has booked his flight home.

At number 6, Izzy and Gary are giving Faye a pep talk. They tell her she needs to be grown up about the family's problems. Then Katy comes in bearing gifts. Well, a chicken and some vegetables to be precise that she fetched from the flat. Realising the food is technically Steph's Anna is all for Katy taking it back but Katy insists Steph won't mind. Owen takes Anna to sit down in the other room while the youngsters work together to prepare a meal for the family.

Out in the street Lloyd is just coming out of the kebab shop when Andrea comes running up behind him. He makes it quite clear he doesn't want to speak to her. Then Steve and Jenna come out of the Rovers and Jenna joins in and tells Andrea to leave her dad alone. Jenna takes her dad home leaving Steve to deal with a distraught Andrea. She plonks herself down on the kerb and he sits next to her. Andrea says she has nowhere to go. The hotel where she works let her stay there last night but now there's no room due to a vacuum cleaning conference. Before he knows what's happened Andrea talks herself into staying at the Rovers. "Are you sure Michelle won't mind?" she asks a bewildered-looking Steve. In the background we see Neil come round the corner and watch from a distance as a grateful Andrea flings her arms around Steve.

Emily is chatting to Roy as he sweeps the pavement outside the cafe. They're discussing the topic of libraries and Emily reminisces about Miss Stanesby, the very straight-laced librarian she remembers as a young girl growing up in Harrogate. They're interrupted by the arrival of Yasmeen who's come to talk to Roy about the library. Since he and Emily have just been discussing that very topic, Roy invites her to join them.

Steve's in trouble again. Liz has just gone upstairs to the flat to find Andrea wandering around in a bath towel. And that was after Liz had given him strict instructions to keep Andrea as far away from Lloyd as possible.

Tracy is also in trouble from Rob. He wants to know what she's done with the medal and when she tells him she's sold it he reminds her that it was of great sentimental value to her family. He tells her that when she's finished her drink she's going to go straight round to see her mum to admit what she's done.

In the cafe, Yasmeen tells Roy and Emily that Sharif is going to join them. While they're waiting for him to arrive they discuss the topic of Ramadan. Emily asks if it's only food and drink that's not allowed and looks rather discomfited when Yasmeen says they also can't have sexual relations. With a wicked glint in her eye Yasmeen admits to missing her mid-morning snack of bread pudding more, just as her husband walks through the door.

At number 6 they've finished their meal. Owen and Izzy have left, Anna's washing up and Gary says he's going upstairs for a word with Faye. He suggests to Katy she should use the opportunity to clear the air with Anna. So Katy joins Anna in the kitchen and tells her how sorry she was for the way she behaved. She realises now just what Anna put herself through for the sake of the family. Anna wells up and envelopes Katy in a big hug. It seems as though Katy has well and truly forgiven her.

In the cafe Yasmeen's surprised to discover there's more to Emily than meets the eye. While Roy is keen to tackle the threatened library closure with a petition, Emily thinks the only way forward is by protesting. Yasmeen is delighted she has a fellow supporter but makes the mistake of asking Emily if she's got the stomach for a fight. Emily assures her she has and then proceeds to list all the protests she's been involved with over the years. Sharif asks Roy to keep an eye on his wife. "I just don't want her arrested again," he says, adding that it's a long story. The meeting comes to an abrupt end when Yasmeen receives a phone call. She says it's from her grandson and adds, rather ominously, that she has to take it.

Deirdre is furious. Tracy has just admitted about the medal and her mother makes it quite clear what she thinks of her. She tells Tracy that people like Uncle Albert risked their lives so that people like her could spend their lives jiggling their iPods and worrying about their nails. She finishes by telling Tracy that if she doesn't find a way to get the medal back not only will she throw her out of the house, she'll never speak to her again.

Once again Steve is caught between a rock and a hard place. Andrea - who has made herself at home and is relaxing in Liz's dressing gown - asks him if he'll speak to Lloyd for her. Meanwhile, Steve is being called to go through to the bar. Liz says Lloyd wants a word with him. Lloyd thanks Steve for getting rid of Andrea and says he just can't bear to be around her. He tells Steve he's a good mate and that now Andrea's gone he can put this whole sorry mess behind him.

Wednesday 23 July

Steve and Michelle are having a hushed conversation outside the living room door about the situation with Andrea, who is going to chuck her out, and how Lloyd will feel when he finds out that they've put her up. Just then the door opens, and there is Andrea, fully dressed and informing them that breakfast is ready. It's her way of saying 'thank you'. With the wind somewhat taken out of their sails, Steve and Michelle sit down, and Michelle asks Andrea what she's doing to do. Andrea is waiting for her head to get straight.

In Anna's house, Owen tells her that they'll have a clearer picture of their situation after the court hearing tomorrow, and Gary tells her to stop worrying. When Anna has gone off to work, Owen tells Gary that he has a load of letters from bailiffs wanting their pound of flesh. In the meantime, he's going to ring round everyone he knows to see if they need a man with a van. He's hoping that if he's got a bit of work coming in, no matter how small, maybe he won't be made bankrupt at the hearing.

Audrey is in the cafe, opening birthday cards. Roy pushes the petition about the library closure under her nose. Sally is at the counter, wittering on to Anna about how she and Tim are off out later to the Thai restaurant. She asks Anna if she and Owen have ever been there. "No," snaps Anna, "it's next on our list, after the luxury trip to Barbados!" When Sally has marched off out, Roy thinks his petition is a futile exercise, people have more important things to worry about.

Owen and Gary are outside cleaning the van, when Neil, Andrea's husband, turns up and starts asking questions about the landlord of the Rovers Return and whether he's married. He then heads off in the direction of the pub. Owen then gets in the van, off to a small job. He tells Gary that when Stan drops the delivery off he mustn't leave it lying around, if Anna finds it she'll go mad. He also tells him to get Faye out of bed.

Back in the cafe, Anna can tell that Roy is somewhat distracted, and when she presses him he reveals that today is the anniversary of the day they found out that Hayley had cancer. He's found a little card that she gave him which reads: 'When your feet grow weary I will carry you.' Anna thinks it's a sign from Hayley. She knew Roy and she knew that when he believes in something he will fight for it, no matter what anyone else thinks.

Faye comes downstairs to find Gary in the living room. She wants something to eat but there's nothing in the house. Gary says he'll go to Dev's and get something, but warns her not to open the door to anyone, unless it's Stan dropping off some stock. He repeats - don't open the door to anyone you don't know.

Michael is making a rockery in Gail's front garden. Lloyd comes by as Gail comes out with coffee and biccies. He tells Gail he hopes she appreciates the amount of work Michael is putting in, and wanders off. Gail then tells Michael that Audrey is having birthday drinks at the bistro later and asks if he'll come. Michael doubts he will be welcome, so declines. He then goes on to tell Gail that his friend, who works 'in catering' has put his back out and asked Michael to help him out for the summer, and the good thing is he can fit it round his work at Streetcars. He won't reveal exactly what kind of catering it is, but Gail says he must come for a drink now - it'll be a double celebration.

There's a knock on the door of the Windasses house and Faye opens the door. A man and woman are standing there. "Are you here for Owen?" asks Faye, adding "come in," without waiting for an answer. Gary is just coming out of the shop, sees what is happening, and runs over, shouting, "No! No! No!" He rushes into the living room and tells the visitors to get out. "Owen Armstrong?" asks the man, and then goes on to say they are from a debt recovery firm and are there to recover outstanding liabilities to the value of £5480. "Or goods to that effect," adds the woman. Gary, instead of telling them that he isn't Owen, (I was shouting at the tv at this stage!) tells them they can't just barge in. The man points out that they were invited. "What, by a kid?" splutters Gary. The man asks if he's able to make a payment.

Still in Anna's house, while Gary tries to ring Owen, one of the bailiffs picks up Faye's laptop. She cries that it's hers and tries to grab it, asking Gary if they should call the police. The man says that the police would be only too pleased to see that this all goes as smoothly as possible. (I am horrified that these people can start taking items when the homeowner isn't even there - surely that can't be legal?) The man tells Gary that unless he can make a part-payment, they will start removing property. (Again I am horrified - Gary isn't even related to Owen, why should be be asked to pay the debt?) At this point Faye rushes out of the house.

Andrea meets Liz in the hallway and tells her she's bought more hair conditioner to replace what she used, and she'll tidy up and put the vacuum round. Liz tells her not to bother, they have a cleaner, but if it helps....

Liz walks into the bar and is just talking to Michelle about Andrea when Lloyd walks in. She gives him a big hug, and sends Michelle out the back to make sure Andrea stays out of the way.

Faye has gone to get Anna, and they are rushing home. As they arrive, Owen pulls up too, as the bailiff woman emerges, carrying Faye's laptop. The man then follows carrying their flat screen tv. The woman tells an agitated Owen to calm down and then sees his van. "Does the van belong to you?" she asks. He tells her that it is for his work. She asks again if he can make a significant payment. He says he can't, so she says they will have to start removing goods. Anna begs the woman to give them until tomorrow, but she won't be moved, telling her that the situation will only get worse. Anna then removes her necklace, begging and begging for more time, and telling Gary to go upstairs and get her grandmother's ring. The woman tells her that it's not enough and goes back inside the house. A crowd has stopped to watch, Sally amongst them, but she turns and shouts at them that it's not a circus and then steps forward and gently asks Anna if she needs anything. Anna sniffs that they'll be fine, so Sally puts her arm around Faye and leads her away. (These scenes were not easy to watch, and there has since been quite a backlash from viewers about glaring inaccuracies - the bailiffs entering when only a child was at home, for example).

Andrea walks out of the back of the pub, to find her husband lying in wait. His suspicions have been proved correct, he knew there was someone else and now he knows who! He marches into the pub.

Steve and Michelle are behind the bar, Liz is with Lloyd at a table, when Neil marches in from the back, with Andrea close behind. "Who are you?" Liz demands to know. Steve recognizes him as the 'weird airport guy'. Neil assumes that it is Steve who has ended his marriage. Andrea urges him to stop, it's nothing to do with Steve. "It's me mate," says Lloyd, "I'm the one you want to knock out."

Over at the bistro, Audrey is waiting for her guests as Nick is uncorking the champagne. Gail comes in with Michael, and Audrey hands him a glass. Nick takes Gail to one side, horrified that she has brought Michael and tells her she can be so selfish. She tells him that until he has children he will never know the meaning of the word. Michael gives Audrey a potted plant, and she chats to him while Nick looks on with face like a wet weekend.

In the back room of the Rovers, Lloyd assures Neil that he didn't know of his existence until a couple of weeks ago. Andrea tells Neil that she said there was no one else because she was going to leave him anyway, whether there was anyone or not. She thinks what they had in their marriage has gone. Lloyd tells Neil that Andrea has lied to both of them for month, now he can barely look at her. Neil tells Andrea that Lloyd doesn't her, but he does. Lloyd can't bear to stay and hear this, and is also annoyed that Steve and Michelle have put Andrea up. He walks out.

Back in the bistro, Nick keeps up a barrage of nasty remarks to Michael, until Audrey snaps at him - he apologises, but carries on. Gail tells him he's embarrassing himself. He says she embarrasses herself on a weekly basis. Gail turns and hugs Michael.

Anna is crying in her kitchen. Faye comes down and says she'll sell some of her stuff. Anna won't hear of it, and says they will get her laptop back for her, as soon as they can prove that Tim bought it for her. Owen promises them he will fix it, no matter what.

Anne Logan.

Friday 25 July

I hope your team is doing well if you're in the Commonwealth (excepting, of course, those countries which have already beaten New Zealand at something). Here's the first episode from Friday.

Anna's in the pub, cleaning her little heart out. She's disappointed Liz (having a lie-in) and Steve and Michelle (gone out) aren't there because she'd hoped for a sub (that's an advance on her wages, not bread or an underwater machine). Eva's not authorised, though she offers to lend Anna some money if she's desperate. Anna shrugs it off, saying it doesn't matter, it was just for some shoes she saw. Andrea wanders into the bar looking for something to do. She realises she's just getting in the way, though. Eva urges her to draw a line under everything and move on.

Back at Anna's, Faye tells Katy what happened when the bailiffs came. Turns out today's the day of Owen's bankruptcy hearing. Faye discovers the bread's stale and refuses any breakfast. Anna reminds her she's got a party to go to tonight but Faye says she's not bothered about going. She asks which is worse - the bailiffs or bankruptcy. Owen's all suited and booted and says there's a chance he won't be made bankrupt. A pal has offered him some delivery work and it might be enough to persuade the court not to declare him bankrupt just yet. After everyone else has gone, a weary Anna tells Owen that even if he's not made bankrupt, she doesn't know how they'll cope.

Faye is over at Sally and Tim's, wolfing down some breakfast. She tells them about the bailiffs taking the telly and the laptop Tim bought her. She says she couldn't produce a receipt to prove it was hers so they took it. She says she managed to kick two of them and Tim high-fives her, to Sally's disapproval. She asks them about bankruptcy, worried what it will mean. Tim says that's nothing for her to worry about.

Kal finds his mother putting up notices in the gym. He's been to Leanne's solicitor with her. His mother disapproves. Technically, Kal is having an affair with a married woman. Kal urges her to be nice to Leanne, though she tries to muscle in on coffee with the two of them. Leanne says she doesn't mind if Yasmeen joins them.

Faye arrives home and says again that she won't be going to the party. It's only when Anna and Owen aren't there that she confesses to Gary that she'd love to go but the girls are all meeting up for pizza beforehand. Gary gives her some money.

Yasmeen asks what the solicitor said. Kal's annoyed at her cheek. She's annoyed when she hears the solicitor thinks Leanne's got a claim on the bistro. She tells Leanne that the business isn't hers and she should be an independent woman and stand on her own two feet. When Leanne mentions Simon, Yasmeen snaps that Nick isn't even Simon's father. Simon's father's in jail for murder. Grrr...Kal tells her to shut up and she says she's sure Leanne will tell her if she doesn't want to talk about it. So Leanne tells her. "Thanks for your input, though."

Dennis and Rita are in the Kabin opening a packet of love hearts. Norris is sickened. When Dennis goes to put the kettle on, Norris tells Rita she's too soft a touch. Dennis was only supposed to be staying for one night. Rita tells him, "That's my spare room and I can have anyone I like sleeping in it."

Anna's hanging out the washing when Tim and Sally approach her across the back fence, expressing sympathy for her predicament and offering to have Faye to stay if it will help. Anna takes umbrage and rages at Tim about taking advantage of her problems to nick Faye. Gary has to come out and hold her back from attacking him. She accuses Tim of using Sally as his meal ticket. She says she can look after Faye but Sally says Faye was round there this morning practically begging for scraps. Gary guides his mother back inside.

Gary makes her a cuppa. Anna's calm now and ashamed of what she said. She realises now that they were only trying to help and want to go and apologise. Gary sits down for a chat and tells her about giving seven pounds to Faye for pizza. Anna's appalled. She could buy some proper food with seven pounds. He asks about her pay and she says she had to pay the leccy bill because they'd had a final demand. Gary tells her something will turn up. Anna doubts it will turn up before tea time. She tells Gary she's going out for a while.

Dennis and Rita are in the bistro. Dennis invites her out on a date but Rita doesn't think they're quite at that stage yet. Mary comes in to join them and Dennis goes to get her a drink. Mary's thrilled to see Dennis and Rita getting on so well. She loves happy endings.

Lloyd's at the bar but leaves just as Yasmeen comes in. "Ah, Nicholas . . ." He insists it's just Nick. She proceeds to tell him about Leanne's visit to the solicitor. It seems Leanne will be entitled to quite a lot, she tells him, advising him that it would be far better to work at staying together. Nick is very dismissive. Yasmeen tells him she'll put her cards on the table - she wishes Leanne wasn't involved with her son. "Well she is," says Nick. "And I'm not taking her back."

We see Anna take a deep breath and go into the Food bank.

Inside, she tells a young woman she's got a voucher from the Citizens' Advice Bureau. The woman says they'll make up a package of three days' food for three adults and a child. Anna's anxious about the carrier bags but is assured they'll just be normal carrier bags, not emblazoned with "Food bank." Anna's offered a cup of coffee but refuses. She's close to breaking down so the woman guides her over to a table and sits her down, urging her to have a coffee and to fill up with as many biscuits as she can manage. Anna's ashamed of having to ask for charity. "What sort of person can't feed their 12-year-old daughter?" She's assured that lots of people struggle and they're just being offered a helping hand.

Leanne sits on the front steps of the gym. Kal joins her. He tells her to ignore his mother. But Leanne thinks maybe Yasmeen has a point. She and Nick should be able to settle things without falling out. She's going to go and see him.

Eva's in the Kabin. She tells Norris to come and see her any time he wants any tips on customer service, like being pleasant or smiling. Mary comes in and it turns out Norris is grumpy about not being asked to lunch at the bistro. Mary thinks that would have been very awkward given his attitude to Dennis. Norris is cashing up as she talks and discovers he's twenty pounds short in the till. It has to be Dennis! He was hanging around all day and Norris left him alone in the shop for a while.

Andrea's in the street and seems undecided about something, then she turns and marches straight to the cab office. Lloyd wants to know what she wants and Andrea says she's a customer. She wants to come round into the office and does so against Lloyd's protests. He says if she's staying then he's going. Except he can't go anywhere because she's locked the front door and has the key. She puts it down her shirt and invites him to come and get it. Lloyd sits down at the switch. If she's staying, fine, but he's not talking.

Anna's cooking a meal using the food she was given. Gary's surprised to see it but she happily tells him where it's from. "There's no shame in being hard up." She even invites Katy to stay for tea. Owen comes in. He begged and pleaded to no avail. He's been made bankrupt.

Leanne and Kal go to see Nick though when he sees them he switches straight over to sarcastic mode. Leanne tries to stay calm and to say she doesn't want to fight but Nick takes great pleasure in telling her that if she wants the coat she left in the wardrobe, he's taken it to charity. He gleefully tells her that Yasmeen has told him all about Leanne's visit to the solicitor. Yasmeen comes along and happily affirms she did - and that she said she didn't want Kal involved with Leanne. Kal tells her she had no right. "I had every right!" she shouts. "You're my son and this woman . . . " She doesn't get a chance to finish before Leanne fires up like a rocket and tells Yasmeen what she thinks of her and that "Just Nick's" won't be that for much longer. She says she never realised what a small, vindictive man Nick had become. "You out-Norris Norris!" She warns Yasmeen not to look at her as if Leanne's something she's trodden in. "What you don't understand is that I love this man and nothing you can do or say will change that. Go on, do your worst! Who cares?" And she stomps off with a rather admiring Kal following her.

The end of the first episode.

Good evening. Another week has passed - but I am behind so let us head for Weatherfield and events there are happening, they were written by Susie Oudot, directed by Michael Lacey and copyright remains with ITV Productions to whom many thanks for their constant inventiveness.

We open with Nick ranting about how the bistro is his business and that Leanne cannot have any of it. Steph tries to get him to see sense and be fair - but Nick is having none of it. Gail comes in and Steph explains that Leanne believes she is entitled to 50% of the bistro which Nick denies. Then in a scene stolen from Monty Python (but beautifully done) both Steph and Gail point out that Leanne was a good manager, found new suppliers, put in new systems and a better rota and generally made the place run well; Nick reckons she was just a glorified waitress. Leanne will get her hands on the bistro over Nick's dead body.

Leanne is ranting at Kal in much the same way - Nick does not appreciate anything she has done, the place would have gone under but for her and the decibel level is just too high. Kal tries to calm her down - and then says he loves her as well. It quietens down and she says she loves him several times.

Owen is bankrupt and the figures do not add up. Owen does not know how he can get back on his feet - as Gary notes it could happen to anyone. In the meantime depression settles over Owen, Anna, Gary and Katie. The discussion continues until Owen wants to go for a walk when Faye comes rushing in and pushes past everyone. Anna goes out with Owen and Katie tries to find out what is wrong with Faye.

In the cab office Lloyd and Andrea are arguing, he tells her to go and throws her out of the office. Andrea opens the sliding door and tells him that her marriage is over and he responds that she broke his heart. There is a hammering on the door - it is Neal and he wants to talk to Lloyd. Neal wants Lloyd to tell Andrea it is over between them and she can go back to him. Outside Steve tells Neal the office is closed and tells him to clear off, Neil departs. Steve then gets his keys and lets himself into the office. Andrea hands back the key and she leaves as well. Steve and Lloyd discuss Andrea staying and Steve departs with the books.

Norris is counting the till and it is #20 down. Norris is convinced that Dennis has taken the money but Mary tries to convince him that he has no evidence, but Norris reckons the man has form.

In the Rovers Rita and Dennis are having a drink and chat with Steve. Norris and Mary arrive and the former accuses Dennis of taking the money from the till. Rita puts matters straight - she borrowed the money and tells Steve that Norris and Mary can buy their own drinks. Neal comes in looking for Andrea but Eva says she left ages ago by the back door.

Anna finds Owen on Maxeem's bench. He is lost in thought and she sits down next to him and she re-assures him that they will get through it. Owen reckons she is back where she started with nothing - and he was supposed to be looking after her. Anna says the Phelan thing has brought them both down - but they can move on together and he is a good dad to Izzy, Katie and Faye and he is a good man and the best thing that has ever happened to her. He thought he was the lucky one and they hold hands.

Steve is explaining to Lloyd about the reasons why Andrea stayed last night having nowhere else to go. Lloyd feels betrayed by his mate and Steve says he will tell Andrea to go.

After the break Nick and Gail discuss going to mediation - Nick does not want to do it because Leanne will win and if he does not go Leanne will win - Hobson's choice.

Owen and Anna come into the Rovers to see Steve or Michelle and Norris takes the opportunity to have a go at people who cannot pay. Owen reveals he has just been made bankrupt and gives Norris a right telling off. Norris goes and Mary apologises for his comments.

In the back Steve explains to Andrea that Lloyd is his mate. He gives her a list of B&Bs - he was trying to be helpful. She will ring round - and he says she can stay another night. She thanks him.

I am not sure just where Leanne and Eva are living with Simon - and where it seems Kal has moved in - but Nick comes round and sees Simon briefly before the latter heads to bed having told us he has been teaching Eccles tricks (can we see them please). Nick tells Leanne that he has booked a session with the mediator for tomorrow as 12 - Leanne says she is busy. Leanne and Nick argue - Kal nods at Nick - both know that there has to be some movement.

Andrea departs the Rovers - she tells Eva some friends phoned and she has somewhere else to stay. Lloyd walks past her as he goes to the gents and Steve finds out that the friends are Sid and Doreen at the Bridewell B&B, "Service with a smile while you stay for a while". Steve gives her a big hug and she thanks him and asks Steve to take care of him. Lloyd returns and demands a pint of lager.

Owen and Anna discuss their difficulties and Rita says she is sorry to hear of their problems. Owen and Anna depart hand in hand.

Outside Dennis points out that Norris is always there to support Rita - Dennis cannot remember many friends like that. There is a growing rapprochement between the two of them and Dennis leans in for a kiss and then puts his arm around Rita.

At home Katie has got nowhere with Faye and Anna puts the kettle on and she tells Owen about her trip to the food bank earlier - it restores your faith in people, places like that. Owen calls her an amazing woman.

Kal is talking Leanne into seeing sense out of mediation - not sorting right from wrong - but getting a solution without giving vast amounts to lawyers - she agrees to go.

Anna says Faye is going to sleep and she and Owen discuss the situation - their not being close - and it has been tough for both of them - and she does not want anyone else. And she tells him it is all in the past - it is all behind them. And she moves to kiss him. And then he kisses her back and then sighs in relief. And hand in hand they head upstairs reconciled.

What did we learn tonight?

Lawyers are expensive.
Eccles can do tricks.
Leanne is actually good at management.

And despite it being Owen who could not see a way forward with Anna after she slept with Phelan, she has just managed to drag him back to bed; somehow what went before did not quite lead to where we are. Never mind.

Mind how you and I will see you at the same time same place next week for a brand new show.

Monday 28 July

Written by John Kerr Directed by Terry Dyddgen-Jones

Anna's in a more cheerful mood, she and Owen are getting on better. Too much information, Gary decides. Faye is acquiring that teenage non-communication gene it seems. She says all is fine but wants to hang out with her mom today. Her face tells us there's more to this than she's letting on.

Gail carefully advises Nick to keep an open mind with the mediator but he's sarcastic because of all the cliches she's pulling out of the bag. She takes a call from Michael. Nick continues to be disrespectful even though Gail reminds him that Michael is her friend. Get a Dog is his advice, if she wants a friend. Sure, then she can sic the dog on him!

Kal and Eva are trying to do their bit with Leanne, advising her on how to keep calm during mediation. She's determined to but they don't seem to believe she can manage it.

Craig is buying magazines in the Kabin for his mother. Gosh isn't he growing up! Getting tall, voice gone all deep! Anyway he tells Rita after Beth is done with the mags, Darryl the rat gets them for his bedding. Norris, meanwhile, is sulking and giving Rita the silent treatment. The object of his sulk, Dennis, comes in to take Rita off to the cafe for a break.

Michael comes driving up in an old ice cream van that has very wonky sounding music. That is his mate's "catering" venture apparently. She offers to help him clean it up as it's her day off, all for the price of a cornetto.

Rita gets back to the Kabin and notices Norris is pleasant to the customers but not her and she gives him an earbashing for behaving like a spoiled child. He admits he was wrong about the money but maintains Dennis is a wrong'un. She accuses him of being spiteful and jealous and he accuses her of being misguided. He huffs off for lunch. She tells him to take his time.

Nick drives up to the offices where he's late for the mediation appointment and we see he leaves his car in a no-parking zone. Uh oh. Watch this space. It doesn't start well since he's late. The mediator introduces himself and they start off. The mediator, Oliver, lays out how things will go and how they should try to behave but even then, the sniping as already started. Oh dear.

At the Bistro, a group of 12 show up for lunch. Steph panics and calls Gail who is up to her elbows in soapy water. She doesn't take the call.

Down the road, Sharif is heading out for a meeting. Alya and Kal accompany him to his car. Alya is dressed up in a pink sari and looks a million pounds. Eva comes along and compliments her. She prepares to get in the car when, no surprise there, Gary comes out of the builder's yard and compliments her as well while Eva takes Kal to one side to talk to him about Leanne. Gary and Alya exchange some flirtatious comments before Kal urges her to get in the car as they're picking up food for a later party (after sunset of course, it's Ramadan)

Leanne is finishing up her side of the story. Nick says he thought they were working to get back together but she reminds him he'd moved out, even if he said at the time it was best for both of them. She complains that he pushed her away. Oliver tries to keep things on an even keel and brings up Leanne's claim for maintenance. They end up slanging at each other, with her bringing up the black eye he gave her. Accident, he claims, really? she claims. He loses his rag, reminds her she used to be on the game and the session is over. He storms out ahead of her.

But on the street, Nick discovers his car is being towed, much to Leanne's amusement. He's given a card with the location where he can get it later after paying the fine.

Rita has been telling Dennis about her row with Norris. Dennis does admit Norris cares for Rita. He worries that he went too far when he kissed her yesterday. She doesn't think he did but keeps him at arms' length anyway, she wants to take it one step at a time but he looks chuffed that he's probably in with a chance.

Julie and Fiz have been shopping but Fiz didn't find anything. Fiz mentions they are very crowded in Number 9. Meanwhile, Michael and Gail end up in a bit of a playful water fight over the garden hose. Fiz and Julie get wet, much to Gail's chagrin. They're a bit shocked but they're ok. Gail and Michael find it all very funny. He offers to take her for a ride in it later.

Faye is in the cafe. Anna wonders why she isn't out with her mates. Faye puts her off and is clearly bothered by something. Sharif and Yasmeen are going over Roy's petition though she doesn't think it's going to do any good at all. Roy puts on his coat as he and Yasmeen are going to a meeting where the library's fate is going to be discussed. Sharif reminds Yas that they still have to pick up their son before going to this do they're attending later and he doesn't want to be late. Again. Sounds like she often gets very focused. Sharif discovers she's got eggs in her bag. They make good missiles, right? He confiscates them.

The Bistro is full up and there's no room for Julie and Fiz. It sounds like Steph has been holding the fort all on her own. They mention that they've just seen Gail outside her house. They leave and a customer comes up to complain about the long wait just as Nick arrives. He offers to get her food to her as soon as possible but when she wants an apology she gets a load of attitude instead. He then finds out from Steph why Gail isn't there.

Kal is worried about Leanne. He's not heard from her yet. There she is, just coming along the road. It's evident things didn't go well. She says Nick only wanted to humiliate her and now they'll have to go to court. He offers to come back from the family party early but she would rather be on her own.

Anna tells Gary that she's pretty sure Fay is upset about something. He offers to find out what he can and joins her. He doesn't get very far.

Eva brings drinks and food to Fiz and Julie in the pub then goes over to see how Norris is doing with his meal. He pays his compliments to the microwave. He then gives Julie a hard time for throwing Dennis out of the flat. Julie blurts out that it was Dennis' idea all along. Oh dear, that's giving Norris all the ammunition he needs and you know he's going to use it.

Yasmeen and Roy return to the cafe and their petition has done no good at all. The library is going to be closed. Yasmeen is ready for a fight. They need to stage a sit in. She doesn't care if it's illegal, the library is more important than the law. Roy isn't so sure he's with her on that.

Craig comes in and sees Faye and wants to warn her that there are tweets and all sorts going around the social media sites saying she's been sleeping around. He didn't start them but he shows her his phone. She jumps up and goes to the toilet. Anna wonders what Craig said to her.

Norris returns to the Kabin after a very long lunch. Norris wants to tell Rita something, and insists she listen. Dennis is lying and treating her like a fool. Ask Julie. He explains that Dennis plotted with Julie. She doesn't believe him. He had promised Julie he wouldn't tell (ha, like that was every going to happen) but he now feels he has to. Julie thought she was helping Dennis win back the woman he loves, and I think he was, but Norris makes it sound like Dennis was just trying to get his meal ticket back. Rita's face shows doubts.

Gail and Michael have returned from their drive. He's looking forward to trying to make a go of it. Nick stalks over and starts shouting at Gail for shirking work. Gail defends her day off and Michael defends Gail which doesn't go down well with Nick who's at the end of his rope. Nick goes eye to eye with Michael. What's he going to do now?

Tvor

Written by Mark Burt and directed by Terry Dyddgen-Jones

Gail's trying to keep the peace between Michael and Nick. She tells Michael to go inside but he wants Nick to apologise first. A showdown is averted when Steph interrupts to tell Nick the credit card machine isn't working and people are waiting to pay. "This isn't finished" says Nick menacingly.

In the cafe, Anna's trying to lure Faye out of the loo. She eventually emerges and Craig tries to make his escape but Anna tells him to stay put. When Faye won't tell her mum what it's about Anna takes the phone and reads the offending messages for herself. Faye, Anna and Craig look respectively mortified, shocked and embarrassed.

Steph and Nick are back in the Bistro and she's trying to talk some sense into him. She says she knows he's upset about Leanne but he can't go round threatening people. They're interrupted by the arrival of Mary who wants to leave some leaflets about the library closure. When Nick hears Kal's mum is involved he very rudely tells Mary he's not interested. Steph goes to say something but Nick stops her before she can even open her mouth.

Dennis arrives in the Kabin carrying a large bunch of flowers for Rita. While Norris makes a show of ignoring him, Rita is civil to Dennis and agrees to meet him in the Rovers later. After he leaves Norris wants to know if Rita's taken leave of her senses. She insists she knows what she's doing and then repeats herself in case Norris didn't get the message the first time.

Back in the cafe, Faye insists to Anna that she hasn't done anything and we suspect the lady doth protest too much. Anna is just having a go at Craig of spreading filthy lies about Faye when Beth comes in. So she has a go at Anna for accusing her son. Anna says if she doesn't believe her she should read what's on the phone. Faye is even more mortified. Craig explains he was only trying to warn Faye, he knows she wouldn't do something like that. "You poor love," says Beth sympathetically to Faye then warns Anna off ever speaking to her son like that again.

Round at Gail's she declares to Michael that it's wine o'clock time. The two of them are in the back garden and clink their glasses together as Gail proposes a toast to the future.

Julie is walking past the Kabin when she's waylaid by Rita who wants to speak to her. Julie realises Norris has dropped her in it . Rita isn't taking no for an answer and makes Julie go into the Kabin.

In the cafe, Anna is trying to get Faye to talk to her. The mere mention of the word 'boys' puts Faye on the defensive and, once again, she says she hasn't done anything as she sucks a milkshake petulantly through a straw.

Nick's mood is going from bad to worse. Steph overhears him sacking one of his waitresses over the phone and then he tells her she'll have to work tonight. Just then Luke comes in and Steph says she can no longer go out with him as planned. Nick explains they're short-staffed. "Oh, and I wonder why'" observes Steph, sarcastically. She announces she's taking a break and when Nick says that's fine Steph answers back that it wasn't a request.

Rita is interrogating Julie in the Kabin. Julie accuses Norris of singing like a canary. Julie tries to avoid saying anything and is keen to leave but Rita wants the truth and she isn't about to let Julie go and warn Dennis. Julie tells Rita she was never meant to get hurt. Rita then realises that Norris was telling the truth all along. Julie tries to explain that she only got involved because she thinks Rita and Dennis belong together and begs Rita to forgive him. Rita accuses Julie of being a romantic and makes it very clear that there will be no more lies.

Steph's using her break to chat to Luke. He has some news - Ty has given him a pay rise. Steph is surprised as he's only been there five minutes but then admits she's rather proud of her brother. Meanwhile, Nick's starting to look contrite and even offers them both a coffee. Steph looks almost taken aback and then says she needs to get back to work. Nick thanks her for staying.

In the cafe Roy is telling Mary about the planned sit-in at the library. He starts to get worked up about the whole idea and Mary asks him straight out if it's his way of saying that he gives up.

Back in Gail's garden she and Michael have been sharing a pizza along with their wine. They seem to be getting on very well and Michael sneaks a bit of Gail's pizza. She spots him doing it and Michael laughs "once a lousy thief, always a lousy thief". Gail says she'll drink to that and they clink glasses again. They start to flirt over the topic of favourite ice-cream flavours. Gail admits to enjoying a 99 so Michael promises that the first ice-cream he makes will have two flakes in it, just for her.

The mood is a lot less harmonious over in the Rovers where Rita arrives with Norris in tow to confront Dennis. She tells him she knows all about his little charade as she's just been speaking to Julie . Dennis tries to speak but Rita won't let him get a word in. Wagging her finger she tells Dennis to stay away from her and then marches out. Dennis tells Norris it was his doing. Norris replies that Dennis brought it on himself, causing Dennis to tell him to shove it.

Rita is walking away from the Rovers when Dennis comes hurrying after her. He begs her to reconsider but Rita tells him he's never setting foot under her roof again. Dennis tells her she can't just chuck it all away. "Like you did before, you mean?" asks Rita. Dennis says that the past is the past and Rita replies that that is where he belongs. Meanwhile, Norris is following on behind and when Dennis finally goes her tells Rita he's sorry. "Me too," admits Rita.

Mary's in the cafe with Roy as he closes up for the night. He tells her that he's been mulling over what she said about the library and he's decided that it is important to him after all. In fact, he admits, it feels rather invigorating. "To care about something again," suggests Mary, reading his thoughts. She tells Roy that whatever decision he makes it will be the correct one before wishing him a good night.

Back in the Bistro Nick apologises to Steph for his behavior earlier. She takes the opportunity to suggest he should try to stop lashing out at people because even the ones who care can only take so much. Nick thinks about this and says he probably ought to go round and speak to his mum.

In the Rovers Julie goes over to speak to Dennis. She's feeling guilty about what's happened and offers Dennis his old room back. He's happy to accept but only for one night. After that he says he'll have to move on. Julie looks distraught. She's hoping he and Rita might get back together. But even Dennis recognizes he's gone too far this time.

Anna's enlisted the help of Tim to talk to Faye but he comes downstairs to say he hasn't got any more information from her. Anna's all for talking to the school but Tim isn't sure that's the right tack. She wants his back up. He tells her it's her call. One thing he does think she needs to do is apologise to Beth. Faye comes downstairs at that moment and is in total agreement with her father on that one.

In Gail's garden she and Michael have now added some romantic music to their wine and pizza. Gail says she's a bit chilly so Michael gives her his jacket. He offers to fetch a blanket but Gail suggests he could put his arm round her instead. Michael admits he's a bit out of practice with this romantic lark. Gail says she's glad. Finally they kiss.

Anna, Tim and Faye arrive on Beth's doorstep so that Anna can apologise. Faye mentions her mum is all for talking to the school. Beth doesn't think it's a good idea - she's had experience of these things and it'll only stir things up. Anna isn't about to take advice from the likes of Beth. To Faye's obvious relief, Anna realises she's outnumbered and agrees to let it go.

Nick arrives at Gail's. He lets himself in and goes through to the kitchen, looking for her. He glances though the window where he sees his mother kissing Michael. Nick's previous calm mood evaporates in an instant. He rushes straight out to the front, kicks the wing mirror on Michael's ice cream van and then hurls a couple of potted plants, followed by a brick which smashes the window of the van and causes Greensleeves to start playing again.

Upstairs in Roy's flat we see him pick up a book and take out a note from Hayley that's tucked inside the pages.

We then return to the street where Michael has rushed outside, alerted by the tune playing in his van. He stops in his tracks when he spots the damage. "Someone's 'ad a pop at me van!" he cries. Gail looks at him with a resigned expression. She knows exactly who is responsible.

Wednesday 30 July

In the bistro, Nick has a face like a wet weekend, and confesses to Steph that he did something really stupid last night....but he isn't prepared to tell her what. Just then Gail comes in with a face of stone. She knows that Nick trashed the ice cream van.

In the pub, Yasmeen is sitting with Mary, Emily and Rita, discussing the fate of the library and planning their protest, although Rita says she's not in the mood to demonstrate. Yasmeen say's she'll call Roy to see if he's coming.

Julie comes into the pub and tells Rita that Dennis is leaving Weatherfield. "Finally!" says Rita. She begs Rita to reconsider, she says Dennis only did it because he loves her. Yasmeen is impressed by Julie's passion and asks if she'll be joining them in the sit-in at the library, but Julie says she has bigger fish to fry.

Back at the bistro, Gail is berating Nick. "How could you?" she asks. He says he saw her kissing Michael in the garden. "So now you're spying on me!" she's furious, but claims that this isn't about her and Michael, it's about him and Leanne. He tells her she's being ridiculous, Michael is taking her for a fool!

Emily, Mary and Yasmeen are waiting at the bus stop, Roy hasn't returned any of Yasmeen's calls so they don't know if he's coming. Just then Craig comes along, and they tell him that the library is closing. Yasmeen's recognizes him, he's a regular. He says he likes it in there, he can't be picked on by other kids from school, and it's nice a quiet so he can get on with his homework. They urge him to join them, so he does. Just then Roy comes along, he was held up at the cafe, but has now left Anna in charge. The bus comes along and they all get on.

Gail is in the cafe, talking to Audrey about what Nick did to Michael's van. Audrey points out that Gail hasn't had a good track record with men, but she doesn't seem to be prepared to listen to those closest to her. "Not when it includes random acts of violence, no," says Gail.

Sophie and Maddie are looking after Simon. They ask him what he'd like to do, he doesn't know. As they walk down the ginnel he sees Eccles in the Barlow back yard and stops to fuss her, and then goes to ask Deirdre if he can take her for a walk.

The five protesters scurry across the library car park. They now seem to be in possession of a large banner which reads Free Books for All. When they get inside they find there is a security guard pacing up and down, who tells them that the library closes in five minutes. Yasmeen says that they're here to sit in and save the library. They drape the banner over a filing cabinet and sit down around it, although Emily grumbles that she can't sit on the floor so she and Yasmeen sit on chairs. Yasmeen whips out her phone to take a 'selfie' of the all which she plans to send out to the social media.

Rita comes out of the pub and sees Dennis ahead of her, heading into the Kabin. He goes in but Norris tells him that Rita isn't there and tells him to leave, rudely calling him a freeloader. Dennis is annoyed, and the two men square up to each other, and after a whole lot more name calling on both sides, Dennis finally punches Norris on the nose! He falls on the floor, and it's then that Dennis sees that the till is open. He pulls out a wad of twenty pound notes just as Rita walks in through the door!

As she helps Norris to his feet, Rita tells Dennis she was going to see if they could give their marriage one last go, but she was stupid. She tells him to put the money down and leave. Dennis tries to argue, but she yells at him to get out and hustles him out of the door.

Audrey, calling herself head of the family, is trying to sort out the situation with Michael, Nick and Gail. She urges Nick to say sorry, then maybe they can get somewhere. Nick says he may not want to say sorry or get anywhere, he likes where he is. Eventually Nick mutters that he'll pay for the damage. Gail says that's still not apologising though. Michael however, is happy to accept the offer and says he won't go to the police.

Simon, Sophie and Maddie have returned with Eccles. Simon goes into Deirdre's house to see if they can all walk Eccles tomorrow.

Dennis is standing outside No. 11, looking at his name that he engraved in the window sill many years ago. Julie comes along and tearfully tells him that she's going to miss him, the flat will seem so empty. She then gives him twenty pounds for a cab, which he takes, and, telling her to make sure Eileen never covers up his name, he hurries off down the Street, just as Rita comes out of the Kabin across the road.

Back at Gail's house, Michael points out to Nick that he's put up with his hostility, David's hostility, lost his job and had his van vandalised, but he's still there, trying to make things work with Nick's kind, charitable mother. Nick snaps that persistence is not next to godliness, and leaves.

Back in the library, the protesters are playing a game, trying to guess the titles of books from actions. Roy asks how the online campaign is going. "Have we gone viral?" asks Mary. Yasmeen tells them that the selfie has had 14 retweets, and she is currently emailing it to all her contacts on the council. Emily mumbles that she feels she might need to stretch her legs, and Craig says his mum will be wondering where he's got to.

Audrey has gone, and, left in the kitchen, Gail tells Michael that there is something she needs to say. He thinks that sounds ominous. She says he has much to fight for and she feels she's holding him back. He says that isn't true, but she says he needs to move on. She adds that her family is a mess, her son is brain damaged and she feels she has to choose. She's being forced into it, but has to choose her son. He says, "Family first," adding that he wishes he'd done that sometimes. He thanks her for everything, and then leaves.

The security guard tells the protesters that he has to lock up, and asks if they're going to leave quietly. Mary says she's worried about leaving her motor home overnight, and Craig says his mum will kill him if he doesn't get back. Emily mutters that her legs have gone to sleep. Yasmeen says that she and Roy will stay, the others can hurry along.

Gail goes into the bistro, where Nick is pouring wine for some customers. She marches up to the table and tells him, in front of everybody, that he got what he wanted, she and Michael have split up, she ended it for him. He tells her she'll thank him one day, he has saved her from massive torment at the hands of an unsuitable man. She tells him the only thing he's saved her from is the chance of a little happiness. She tells him that he's unhappy, so everyone else has to be unhappy, so now they're both miserable.
