2014

Wednesday 1 October

Morning in the Platt's, David is quizzing Kylie on why she did it, but she doesn't know. Just then Gail and Michael come downstairs, he's suggesting they have a few days away - if he's facing a death sentence he might as well enjoy himself while he waits for results of tests. Gail picks up the atmosphere between David and Kylie and says that she doesn't know what's going on but she hopes they sort it out. "It's sorted," says Kylie.

Julie is browsing in the shop when Mary comes in and tells Dev that she can't babysit after all, she's promised to go somewhere with Roy. Julie jumps in and offers to help, which Dev accepts, much to Mary's annoyance it seems, although she tries to hide it.

Maddie is valeting a car when Tim comes by and tells her to lay off about his inability to read. "If I can't read why would I have these?" he says, waving a couple of newspapers in the air. He warns her not to let Sally know any of these 'false accusations' - it stops right now.

Liz is in the salon having her hair done, chattering to Audrey. Kylie sits at the desk looking worried and thoughtful. She then announces that she hasn't got any more appointments so she's off, and picking up her coat she heads off out of the door. Audrey and Maria wonder if Kylie is all right, but David mutters that she's fine, and then admits that they have been rowing a bit.

Over at Dev's house, Mary is clearing away the tea things and telling the children that they must behave well for Julie as she has no experience of looking after children. Just then there's a knock on the door and a large, fluffy emu head peers in, with Julie attached to the other end. "Say hello to Loopy Lulu!" she cries and rushes in squealing as the puppet makes a mad dash to the twins in the style of Rod Hull and Emu. As the twins giggle and Dev smiles, Mary stands on the sidelines and looks decidedly put out.

Yasmeen is holding forth in the cafe, telling Roy, Emily, Anna and her grandchildren that the area needs a community centre, and they all think it's a good idea, except Kal who has just come in and is rather scathing. She tells them she's off to the council today to discuss funding. Kal thinks she'll be returning very disappointed. Just then Tim walks in and Yasmeen hails him and asks if she can interest him in one of their books. "No ta," says Tim, and edges away.

Eva is behind the bar in the pub when Liz arrives back from the hairdressers. "Oh..yes, very nice," says Eva, obviously struggling for something to say. "And it's not too tarty is it!" Liz, a little taken aback, reckons it looks quite classy. "Anyway, who said anything about tarty?" Eva then tries to backtrack, makes a joke about "us blondes" and then dries up. Liz goes off out to phone Tony.

Gail and Michael come in and, in order to do something a bit different, order cocktails, and then see Kylie sitting on her own. Michael offers her a cocktail and goes off to get them. At the bar, Eva is a little nonplussed. "A mojito?" she queries. "Yes," says Michael, beaming, "and two pina coladas please." "Where do you think you are, Magaluff?" asks Eva, who then proceeds to look up the recipe on her phone, after asking how to spell mojito. Liz comes out from the back saying that Tony thinks her hair looks classy. Eva asks if they have any fresh mint and club soda. Liz stops in her tracks. "What?" Eva shows her the phone as Michael smiles across the bar. (I have to admit this is classic Corrie comedy, and I cried with laughter watching it!)

Julie is making up Addi and Asha stories for the twins, when Dev arrives home. She sends them upstairs to do their homework. As she prepares to leave, Dev tells her the wholesaler has given him a couple of bottles of wine to test, so asks if she'll stay and help him.

Kylie comes out of the pub and Eva rushes after her, asking where she's going to. Kylie eventually admits she's off to the estate and Eva is worried that she's going to get into drugs again. "Why does everyone think the worst of me?" snaps Kylie and marches off.

Gail and Michael are home again, and trying to book a holiday online. David comes in and asks where Kylie is. They tell him she was in the pub earlier but don't know where she is now, they assume she's gone to pick up the kids. Just then David gets a text message - Kylie has been held up and wants him to pick up the children.

Dev and Julie are sampling the wine, and giggling, when Mary comes in quietly behind them and makes them jump, and is very disapproving of their behaviour. Julie remarks that she didn't know Mary could come and go as she pleased, and Mary is delighted to tell her that she is considered one of the family. Julie makes a hasty departure.

Kylie is knocking on the door of a high rise flat, looking for her friend Gemma, when she sees her down across the road, wrestling with a large, bearded man. She shouts at the man to leave her alone and her friend informs him that Kylie is Callum's ex. This seems to do the trick as the man backs off and leaves.

Maddie arrives at Sally's house with a tin of soup for Sally who has gone to bed not feeling well. She tells Tim that she wasn't any good at reading when she was at school, she was in 'the unit' but she forced herself and now it's ok. Tim then confesses that he hates reading, he's pants at it, the words don't make sense. She says she wants to help but he's not interested.

Kylie and Gemma are walking round a park, catching up. She tells her friend about David and the kids and how they live with David's mam. They exchange phone numbers and part company.

In the pub, Yasmeen is telling Emily it didn't go so well at the council. Leanne and Kal come in as Emily asks whether Yasmeen's husband might help. Kal informs her that Yasmeen is doing this behind his dad's back.

Julie comes out of the kebab shop with chips, just as Dev comes out of his house with her scarf, looking for her. He gives her the scarf and places it round her neck. He tells her not to take any notice of Mary and she says she won't, adding that she had a lovely evening. He bends forward to pull her hair out of the scarf and she, misunderstanding, leans in as if to kiss him. He pulls back sharply and, mortified, she mutters something about too much red wine and runs off, leaving a trail of chips behind her.

David and Audrey are sitting at the kitchen table sorting out her car insurance documents. Audrey then asks him what the problem is with Kylie. She advises him to find some forgiveness and move on. Just then Kylie comes in and Audrey gathers up her paperwork and leaves. Kylie tells him she's sorry, but her words are a little slurred and he guesses she's been drinking. He makes for the stairs to go to bed. She asks him if they are all right. "No," he says, adding that he would really like to kick her out but he can't - and he points upstairs where the children are sleeping. "You're on the couch," he says as he goes up to bed.

Anne Logan.

Friday 3 October

It's morning in the Platt household. David gets up to find Kylie already downstairs with the children. Things are a bit awkward between them and Kylie asks David to tell Audrey she's not feeling well and won't be in today. Gail comes in from the back yard. She's been cleaning her walking boots with the idea that she and Michael might go for a bit of a yomp while they're away. Max asks if it's time for his pill and Kylie looks away. (I'm not entirely sure Gail knows what a yomp is. It's usually a march over difficult country while carrying all your kit, as soldiers do)

Eileen and her sister sit on Maxine's bench eating pastries. Julie tells Eileen all about an awful documentary on TV last night about a man with a tumour. She describes the thing in full detail and Eileen spits her food back into the paper bag. Liz comes past and is greeted cheerfully but seems very preoccupied.

Sally comes downstairs before Tim can take her a cuppa. He greets her with "Morning, Mariella," presumably in reference to Mariella Frostrup's deep and husky voice. Sally says her voice is coming back but Tim says he liked it husky and sexy. "I'll tell Deirdre to watch her step," Sally smiles. Tim says that since the caretaking job is a no-goer, he's going to be proactive with the job he's got and get some flyers printed for the window-cleaning business.

Julie and Eileen go into the Kabin only for Julie to walk straight into Dev. "I see you've bought a paper," she gabbles. Dev, obviously feel equally taken aback, explains that he likes to keep up with current affairs. He leaves and Eileen asks, "Is it just me or is everyone a bit weird today?" Norris comments that Julie seems a bit nervous. She denies it, then almost leaves without the mint's she's bought. Eileen looks at Norris for a moment. "Say something normal," she says. "That blouse doesn't suit you," Norris tells her.

In the salon, Audrey and Maria witter on about the car Maria would buy if she had the money. David is distracted and says he's got a lot on his mind. The phone goes. It's about Max.

Jason and Eva head for the cafe but when Eva sees Kylie sitting at the bus stop she tells Jason to go without her. Kylie tells her she feels a bit rough and is just getting some fresh air. Eva says they're mates, aren't they, so Kylie should tell her what's really going on. Kylie says she's going to see Callum. She couldn't find him when she went looking the other day. She wants to find out what's wrong with Max. "You know what's wrong," Eva points out. "The doctor told you." Kylie says she's worried in case Callum passed something else on to him. Callum's not right in the head. Eva says she's coming with her. Kylie protests but Eva says she's her mate. They get on the bus.

Anna takes a huge order from Jason, prompting Norris to comment on his diet. Jason says he's got a fast "metaphoric. . . er . . . meta. . ." Norris warns him that will change as he gets older. Emily tells Norris to leave Jason to eat his lunch in peace, though Jason hasn't got his lunch yet and judging by the size of his order it will be some time! Norris tells her he was just making conversation and Emily says that makes a change from gossiping. "I don't gossip," says Norris, "Though having said that, I might have some interesting information about a certain local convenience store owner. . ." He doesn't get the chance to tell Emily what it is as Yasmeen comes in and asks if she can sit down. She doesn't give Norris a chance to protest. She's got a pile of forms to fill in relating to getting permission for her community centre. Emily says she has some ideas about groups which might be interested in using the centre. There's the One O'Clock Club, for a start. I'm glad to hear the club has survived the death of Blanche but Yasmeen dismisses the very idea of the club using her centre. "It's not really what I had in mind," she says. "I was hoping to attract a much more diverse and, how shall I put it, vibrant clientele." "You mean younger," says Emily, clearly annoyed.

Tim unloads boxes of flyers from the back of his van as he chats to Kevin. Maddy comes to tell him that she didn't mean to offend him. She was just trying to help. Tim tells her to drop the subject.

David leaves a phone message for Kylie. He chats to Max about his tummy ache. Max, who has just scoffed a lot of biscuits, admits that he doesn't like it when David and Kylie fight and he doesn't like seeing his mother sad. He's seen her like that before. David suggests they think of a way to cheer her up.

Kylie and Eva arrive at a pub which Kylie says "sort of" used to be her local.

Maddy's in the Kabin buying gossip magazines while Emily tells Rita all about Yasmeen. Norris comes in. He's horrified and appalled. "Filth!" he says. Maddy buys a magazine and leaves as Norris carries on telling Rita and Emily how horrified and appalled her is. "Look what I've just had shoved through the letter-box," he says, showing them a flyer. "Ooh, I say, that IS rather risque," says Emily. Norris says it's disgusting. He's going to have to go and make himself a cup of tea to get over it.

In the pub, Kylie says it looks much the same, except for a few stains. She says there was cheap beer and a lock-in every night when she lived in the area. A bloke called Macca comes in and recognizes Kylie. He gives her a big hug and hugs Eva as well. "Any chance of buying us a drink for old times' sake?" he asks Kylie. He chats to them and tells Eva a story about Kylie stealing a bus. "You stole an actual bus?" asks Eva. "It was only a single decker," says Kylie. She tells Macca she's looking for Callum.

Maddy takes a magazine to Sally. Tim comes home and demands to know what she's doing there. He's home because he's just finished delivering flyers for the window round. Sally says it was very kind of Maddy to bring her a magazine. Tim brusquely says he's home now so cheers for coming round. Maddy was going anyway. Sally tells off Tim for being so rude but he says he was just worried about Maddy tiring Sally out.

When Audrey goes round to the house, Gail is still home. Michael's still getting ready. She's come to see how Max is. He's busy with David, baking a cake for Kylie. She tells Gail to have a wonderful trip.

In the Rovers, Julie has been sitting with Eileen and Jason. She's going back to work and Eileen accuses her of being boring and says she didn't have anything better to do than watch documentaries about tumours. Julie denies it. There's more to her life than work and television, though she can't think of anything else at the moment. Jason goes off - he's got to see Yasmeen about a quote for her project. Eileen gets another drink and takes the chance to question Liz about what's wrong. Liz tells her Jim wants her to visit more often and if she doesn't then Peter will get another almighty kicking. She doesn't care about Peter but she can't do that to Deirdre. She asks Eileen not to mention this to anyone.

Mary goes to the Kabin for her supply of sherbet lemons. Norris tells her he witnessed an intriguing interaction earlier today - between Julie and Dev. Mary draws herself up to her full height (not very high, but taller than Norris). "What are you talking about?" she demands. Norris says they were both in the Kabin and there was definitely something in the air and it was more than just Dev's aftershave. Mary won't believe this of Dev. "Julie, yes. But then she's a fantasist, not to mention a desperate woman of a certain age!" she snaps. "There, I think you'll find that's the correct amount. Good day." And she's gone, leaving Norris open-mouthed and confused.

Eva and Kylie chat to Macca, who hasn't had a job since his paper round. He's got dreams of what he'd do if he came into money. He dreams of a house with a garden. Kylie looks uncomfortable and doesn't mention she's already got this. She wants to drink up and get going.

Kev and Dev (clearly a double-act waiting to happen) snort together over a couple of flyers, daring each other to ring the number. Maddy comes along and they try to hid them but she grabs one. "Dirty widows!" advertises the flyer. "Ring this number. Satisfaction guaranteed." And there's a picture of a curvy woman at a window. "Oh, my God!" squeaks Maddy. Kevin denies they were really going to ring the number. But the flyers are all over the place. "You've got to be joking," gasps Maddy. She races away to start taking them off the line of cars parked in the street. Mary comes along and tells Dev she wants a word but it's a delicate matter and not for discussing in the street. They go into the shop.

Jason and Yasmeen discuss the quote. She's trying to use emotional blackmail to get him to quote a low price. Sharif walks round the corner and Yasmeen comments that he's back early. She looks guilty and he asks what's going on.

Kylie says they're leaving the pub and heads for the loo first, leaving Eva with Macca. He's impressed with her and tries to chat her up. Her beautiful eyes are like spacehoppers, apparently. He moves closer to her, touching her arm and suggesting they've got a connection. A rather good-looking bloke comes in and comes over to Eva, wanting to know whether Macca is bothering her. He tries to come on to her but Eva isn't playing. She asks his name and a voice behind her says, "That depends who's asking." It's Kylie, back from the loo. "Hello, Callum," she says.

The end.

This is my last update for a while as I'm settling into a new job. The first Friday update will be done by the lovely Duncan - and many thanks to him. See you all next year.

Margaret Carr

Good evening. In the week leading up to this episode I had a very quiet week. My wife had taken herself off on holiday to Westgate on Sea with her girl friends and I had the house to myself. I was deputed to look after grandson - but somehow I do not get the income she will receive for my sterling coverage. Exploitation I call it.

Anyway events in Weatherfield continue and this episode was written by Perrie Balthazar, the director was Audrey Cooke and the copyright remains with ITV Productions to whom many thanks for all of their wonderful creativity.

The opening scene this evening is on an estate in a pub and the words issuing from Eva "Callum as in "Callum" Callum?" And the hunk in leather adds to Kylie that he had heard she was back on the scene. She either wants money or trouble or both (no love lost there then). She asks if she can visit her old local from time to time and he remarks that the last time she was there "Blazin' Squad" was on the jukebox (and their last chart success was in the early years of this century). She asks how he would know seeing as how he has been inside for a while. One year and ten and a half months. Eva points out that he is "fit"! She had been expecting a twonk in a vest with a dog [really Eva - surely even you can spot that Kylie can pull ... hmm she has a point David is no hunk]. A blonde screeches into view - the girl Kylie met earlier in the week. Kylie and Eva want to go but Callum is buying a big round and it would be rude for them to go at this point, so they accept his hospitality. She calls him a cheapskate but he claims people change.

In his shop Dev is re-assuring Mary that he is not going to propose to Julie and that no-one will ever come between her and the twins. Dev tells Mary that they adore her cheese on toast as well as her. She can sense there are things between Dev and Julie and believes those things will grow. She wants Dev to be happy, but Dev tries to calm and reassure her. They hold hands and he promises that if he should ever meet the next Mrs Alahan, then Mary will be the first to know and he continues as the door opens that "he can categorically state that he has no romantic inclinations towards Julie whatsoever." Mary stares open mouthed at the new entrant - which is of course Julie who heard the finality of that statement. Julie says she is glad they have cleared that up and maybe he could put it in a text next time and she leaves.

David and Max have made some sort of cake and now need to clean up. Max says he tries to be good but it is difficult. Max asks if they can make dinner for Mum as well - Mums are special people and they need a fuss making. David does not think there will be enough time but Max offers to help.

Maddie (who is no longer mad as the ptf has been hard at work and she has now become an upright citizen of the Street) rushes into the Rovers to ask if Tim knows what he has done. She shows him the flyers which say "Dirty Widows" as in "pervy housewives" and it is likely to be a small problem. They rush out to gather the flyers. Liz chats to Eileen and the latter tells her that she needs to talk to Deirdre to explain the impossible position she is in.

Over at the health club Sharif and Yasmeen are arguing over the money for the community centre. Ahh that brings back some memories. Percy Sugden was the caretaker and when he retired he lodged with Emily Bishop. Opinionated and nosy and the Norris of his time, although possibly slightly less humorously. Coming back to now however whilst Sharif is not really as bad as he was painted by Kal, I regret to say that Yasmeen is not growing on me. Indeed I am not terribly impressed as yet by Kal or Alya either - the facial expressions are not matching the words or the sentiments. From performances elsewhere Zeedan can do better than we have seen and I hope they all fit in as I gather that they will soon be living on the Street. She is angry about the money invested in the gym and he about the community centre. Kal, Alya and Zeedan get dragged into the discussion. Yasmeen needs a project. Sharif was not informed or consulted. They accuse each other of spending the kid's inheritance. The argument is unresolved.

Maddy and Tim come looking for flyers in the Kabin. Norris has personally cleansed the Street of the defective flyers as they are not advertising window cleaning services. Maddy says it is simply a typo - she forgot to check with the printers. Tim says he will bin them all.

David and Max have prepared a dinner and Max is going to phone Kylie to ask when she will be home. David hopes she will appreciate it.

Dev catches up with Julie and wants to apologise. All she wants is some crumpets.

Back in the new pub another round is being consumed - although Eva is not participating as she would rather lick the drip tray. Eva says Kylie is a great mum and she is talked into staying another hour or two. Kylie's phone goes - it is "D" but she does not want to answer it. Callum downs a chaser saying that perhaps wifey is having too much fun here!

After the break Kylie takes the call and tells David that she is a grown woman and will be home when it suits her. And hangs up. David tells Max she has already eaten and they have not so need to cook dinner.

Back at the Rovers Eileen tells Liz to tell Jim McDonald where to go. Deirdre comes in and thanks Liz for what she is doing - which means Liz offers her a glass of red.

Sally, suffering with a sore throat, answers Tim's mobile. She asks how she can help the caller who is evidently impressed be her throaty conversation and then makes some request as Maddy and Tim arrive and ask for the phone. Maddy asks her to give the phone to Tim - but Sally is astonished and says into the mouthpiece "What did you say?" And she says it is not on offer and tells her caller that he is a sex fiend. She hangs up and calls him a pervert. Tim and Maddy explain what has happened. The phone rings but this time Sal does not answer it.

Kylie is telling Callum about how good David is at being a father to another man's kid. Eva has now worked out that the reason they are there is not in connection with Max but so that Kylie can get some drugs. Eva wants nothing more to do with it and leaves by herself. As she goes we get a shot showing more of Kylie than normal - much more. which the baggy top cannot hide! Anyway Joey Miller is owed money by Callum and is outside threatening to fire his car and all sorts of mayhem. Callum sends a bulky man out to sort because he cannot get into trouble as he would end up back inside. Callum wants to know what Max looks like. He has worked out that Kylie wants drugs and writes his number on her arm using her makeup. Kylie departs.

Sal, best as she can, is tearing a strip off of Tim. Maddy stands up for Tim saying it is a simple mistake. Sal is exasperated but is feeling tired so is going to bed. And she wants this all sorted before she wakes up - at which point the mobile starts ringing again. They should start by switching the phone off! And leaving it switched off for two years.

Peace appears to have broken out at the community centre. Sharif tells Mary that all decisions made by Yasmeen and him are joint [even though as we know they do not bother to tell each other]. She agrees. Sharif observes that she will now leave him in peace and can boss everyone else around. Sharif says that Yasmeen as the go-to girl will welcome more of her ideas on behalf of the community as he is more of a silent partner. Yasmeen should look worried at this but does not - never mind she might get better yet.

Kev is back and comes into the Rovers asking after Peter. The best Dreary can say is "You Know" with a sigh. She thanks him for asking. He says it must be taking its toll all the way round. She observes however that she can sleep nights because he is safe - looking meaningfully at Liz, then thanks her. She is going home to make a vegetarian surprise for Ken. He orders a pint but Liz says the barrel needs changing and tells him to sit down. She then says to Eileen - What else could she have done? Liz refuses to do any more to put pressure on Dreary because of the state she is in. Eileen says she is mad and should tell Tony and Steve before they find out from someone else. Liz observes that 30 years after she should have told Jim McDonald and his babycham where to go he is still her problem. (So he is).

Maddy finds Tim sitting on Maxeem's bench. He spouts some exotic facts to prove that whilst he cannot read (or write) he is actually quite clever. This includes revealing that Bird's nest soup is made from bird spit and is an oriental delicacy. Maddy is not sure you can say oriental any longer as it is probably racist. Maddy reassures him that Sal will not dump him because he lacks reading skills. Tim reckons he is doing alright. Home, girlfriend, job and he is a dad - so can't be all bad. He has found ways of coping - and he can only just about make out the football scores. Maddy wants him to talk to Sal - and he can get help. He does not want to learn - because he is afraid of the stigma. Sally must not find out he tells Maddy.

A very full figured Kylie arrives home and she apologises to David for running away. The old Kylie always ran away. David is not happy with her taking tablets. She has missed out on lasagne chips and gravy - and the cake. All down to Max. Max loves her and so does David. He tells her to sit down and then she realises what is on her arm so scrubs it off before she eats. He has made her "jus", so he must love her. She throws her arms around him and says thank you for everything.

Roll credits.

So any lessons this evening:
a) Get someone who can read to proof read anything you plan to distribute!
b) If things go wrong do not leave your mobile phone lying around
c) If he loves you he will make "jus" to go with the chips
d) If you want Peter battered half to death do not give into blackmail
e) Hiding pregnancies when shooting a soap is ever more difficult.

Corrie are allegedly having a big October. The threads are there - Peter and the trial, Kylie and the drugs, the Sharif family wars (or so it seems) and Tim's literacy skills - which of these will remain big for the rest of the month?

See you next week.

Monday 6 October

Written by Jan McVerry Directed by Peter Rose

Ken's on the phone to Peter's solicitor. There's a tap on the door but he ignores it. Solicitors charge by the minute! Rob comes downstairs and howls in agony, looks like he's walked on one of Amy's toys. He lets Liz in the door as Ken finishes his call. Liz asks after Deirdre but Ken explains that Deirdre didn't sleep most of the night worrying. He tells her that Peter's trial starts next week, Monday the 13th. Liz declines to stay.

Maddie has Tim in the cafe and is showing him the menu. He says he doesn't need it and demonstrates by watching Roy go by with a dish of something. He sniffs and determines it's a meat and potato pie and says he'll have one of those. Maddie has a hard time deciding what she wants. Liz comes in and joins Eileen and Sean. They know it's a prison visiting day today and can tell from the look of her she didn't get a chance to tell Deirdre anything. They also find out that Steve doesn't know she's visiting Jim even if it's on her terms. Some terms, Eileen scoffs, when the terms are visit Jim or Peter gets it. Sean is shocked. Liz figures Peter will be convicted and she will not be held to ransom any longer.

Jason and Gary are busy gutting the butcher shop with some help from Kal and Sharif. Alya is looking at the bits and pieces that came out of it, picking up some tiles and thinking they could use them and make a mosaic. She spills a bit of debris on Zeedan who jumps back, worried about his trainers. Yasmeen overlooks the job and reminds Jason they have to finish early. It's Eid and she's been cooking since Thursday! Kal hugs his mum and compliments her cooking to the nines, mentioning that Leanne will surely enjoy it. The joy kind of goes out of Yasmeen's face at that idea.

In the salon, David is trimming Beth's hair and Maria is working on a woman who's hair is vibrantly red. Kylie's snarking around, irritating everyone. Maria wonders why Kylie's not doing a lot of contributing in the shop. David says she's been ill and even though back to work now, just needs a bit of nudging.

Tony drives up, he's apparently been in Southampton and had a good time. Jason, Gary and Eva tease him that he's missed Liz. He drives off.

Kirk is eating a sandwich on the bench outside the Salon. Beth comes out and shouts at him for spending money they're trying to save for the wedding.

Tony gets back to the Rovers and Liz is tickled pink to see him. He suggests a romantic getaway and she's delighted but puts him off it for this afternoon. She's planned to do something with some friends. He even uses the L-word and that stops her in her tracks for a minute, thrilled to hear it. I think it nearly persuades her but not quite. He murmurs that she's got under his skin and pulls back but she tells him she feels the same way, just didn't want to be the first to say it. She maintains that she can't get out of her plans with an old mate. After that, she's all his.

Yasmeen is taking one of the contractors to task and has humbled him completely. If he had a tail, it would be between his legs. Norris and Emily stroll by. Naturally Norris has a few less than flattering words but when Sharif greets them, he's all smiles and politeness again. Sharif is dismayed to hear that Yasmeen has made it clear that the community centre will only welcome younger members. He confronts her but we cut away to...

The cab office. Liz comes in to tell Eileen that Tony came back early and that she'd lied to him about where she's going. Only guess what? He just said he loved her! Liz is sure he was sincere. Eileen looks like she might be a little jealous. Liz insists this will be Jim's only visit but Eileen reckons she could have done that in a letter. No, Liz insists, Tony is going to be her priority. This will be a one-off visit.

Tony is striding down the street on the phone and he's angry, something to do with someone letting down the side on the job in Southampton. He collides with Sean who has just come out of the house. He rants about people doing things behind your back and Sean, misunderstanding the reason behind Tony's frustration, lets slip that Liz is only seeing Jim for Deirdre's sake so that Jim will keep Peter safe. He doesn't get angry with Sean and tells him that he realizes that Liz is doing a favour for someone that has taken advantage of her generous nature. He looks sorely disappointed that Liz has lied to him, though.

After the break, we see Tony run across the road. Rob comes out of the shop to talk to him about some tellys but when Tony sees Liz go by in a cab, he runs the other way to his van, leaving Rob stood there like a lemon.

Kal trips over something that Zeedan left in the way and calls him on it. Zeedan, who hasn't been a lot of help from the sounds of it, gets cocky and sarcastic with his father who orders him to help out or go home and help with the cooking. Zeedan scowls that he's not cooking for "that slapper". Oh dear. The bag of (whatever it is) nearly lands on his head as his father orders him to smarten up. He will behave himself like a good son at the dinner or else and clean up that mess (which Kal himself made!) Alya takes the brush and starts to do it herself and hisses at her brother to help Gary and not make things worse, "you child"! He shouts back at her that they were raised to stand up for what they believe in and now he's being told to shut up. He doesn't consider that Leanne means anything to their family. Never will. Alya reminds him that today, Eid, is the day they should open their hearts and homes. She shakes her head in disgust.

Eva comes to the salon to see Kylie on an excuse to talk to her. They go into the back. Eva confirms that David doesn't know that she went to see Callum and has been keeping an eye on her all day. She promises that she won't go back and doesn't think Callum will come find her. She is not going back to that life.

Leanne isn't happy to be the cause of discord at the celebration. Maybe she should skip it?

Maddie finds Tim up a ladder. She points out that he could make his life so much better but he has no intentions.

Sharif has brought Yasmeen, complete with a bouquet of flowers to apologize to Emily. She mollifies her until Norris comes to the door. She invites them to dinner. Norris complains about eating early but Emily graciously accepts. She seems to know a bit about the celebration and Yasmeen confirms that she knows a little about the Bible as well she should, being a librarian all those years! She must have quite a cross-section of knowledge! She passes Emily paper with the address on it and peace seems to have been made. They close the door but hear Norris griping about antacid tablets behind it, and they walk away laughing.

In the cafe, Roy joins Ken who is thoughtful. Ken's been to the solicitor and it's hitting home with him. Roy explains that he's been called to testify for the prosecution and hopes Ken understands he must tell the truth as he saw it. He also hopes this will not come between them as friends. Ken says it never would though he's not so sure Deirdre won't get all emotional over it should the solicitors twist things in court. Kirk joins Beth who is having a coffee and a cake and tells her she's probably spent the same on that as he had on the sarnie. They've both been working their socks off. Kirk tries to find out if she and he are on the same page. Don't think so. She says it will all be worth it! His face falls a bit. More overtime for us, it seems.

Jason complains to Gary about getting caught in the middle of a family feud between Kal and Zeedan. Jason pulls Kal in to help out with a crowbar, mainly to get he and Zeedan separated for a bit. Gary takes Alya and Zeedan to task for bickering more than helping.

Liz's cab finally arrives at the prison. Tony's van pulls up across the street.

Alya is resentful of Gary telling her off. She flirts with him and he moves in, they nearly kiss but Kal comes around the corner taking orders for refreshments. They order teas and Gary asks for chocolate.

Tony confronts Liz in front of the door. She insists she's not here for Jim, it's for Deirdre. She defends the fact that she's dressed up as wanting to show Jim that she's doing well and happy without him. He calls her on the lies. They promises to be honest and not play games. She insists she loves him and this isn't a threat. But he gets all "Big Man" and orders her into the van. As expected, she immediately digs her stilettos in. He gives her an ultimatum. Come home now or we're finished. Now you just know that nobody orders Liz about, don't you? Find out what she does with this in the next episode.

Outside the prison Tony issues Liz with an ultimatum: if she goes in, they're over. But the lady's not for turning. Liz tells Tony she doesn't do ultimatums before strutting off in her high heels towards the entrance.

In the street, work is continuing on clearing out Fred Elliot's old shop. At least, Kal, Gary and Jason are grafting while Alya's more interested in saving the old tiles and Zeedan's only concern is keeping his new shoes clean which isn't helped when he drops the contents of a cream cake on them. While all this is going on, Zeedan takes it upon himself to invite Gary to join them for the Eid celebrations that evening.

Liz is now with Jim and he can tell she's worked up about something. He winds her up a treat when he guesses she's got man trouble. Liz is outraged even further when Jim suggests she should be choosing her men by comparing them to him. She says that she and her man love each other and at least she doesn't have to sit there wondering when he's going to wallop her one. She tells Jim that he's wrong if he thinks she came today because he ordered her to. She says she went there to set him straight and tells him that if he harms a hair on Peter's head then he'll never hear from her, Steve or Andy ever again. And with that she walks out.

Maddie goes into the Kabin and meets Tim coming out the other way. She's been looking up information on the web about literacy but when she tries to show it to him, Tim tells her to bin it, along with the leaflets. He's fed up with her do-gooding. Yasmeen is the next to come in. She's in a right state about all the cooking for tonight and went into the Kabin by mistake when she intended to go into Dev's for some stem ginger. Emily asks Norris if he's sure about going tonight but Norris says he wouldn't miss the opportunity to have a snoop around her soft furnishings.

Steve's in the cab office with Eileen. He's trying to persuade her to help him take a photo of a mole on his arm. Eileen's not at all keen but she's let off when Liz comes in, wanting a word with Steve. Liz makes it clear she needs to speak to him in private but Steve refuses to leave the comfort of the cab office so Eileen discreetly dons her headphones. Liz starts to explain about her visit to the prison but the minute she mentions Jim's name, Steve stops listening and starts talking about his mole again. He goes off in search of someone to help him, leaving his mother shaking her head in despair.

In the Rovers, Sean's in a state about what Tony's going to say to Liz while Eva's in a state with Sean for going on and on about it. Then Tony comes in like a man on a mission and marches straight through to the back. Sean decides to try and call Liz again.

David and Kylie are next to come in. When Kylie goes off to put something on the jukebox David questions Eva about the girly chat she had with Kylie in the salon earlier. Eva manages not to say anything but she warns Kylie that David's been asking questions.

Then Liz comes in. She tells a nervous-looking Sean that she knows he blabbed to Tony but adds it's nothing to worry about. She says she's used to dealing with grumpy brutes and then heads out to the back to face the music.

But it seems Liz underestimated Tony's reaction. She finds him packing the last of his things into a bag. Liz can't understand why Tony's going to let Jim spoil what they have with each other since Jim means nothing to her. But as far as Tony's concerned the fact that she lied is a step too far. Liz says she's sorry but Tony says don't be - this way he's got to know her better and he doesn't like what he's learned. And on that note, Tony leaves.

Gary arrives at the Nazir house where everyone is already tucking into the meal. Especially Norris who's taken a particular shine to the lamb tagine and wants to make sure he gets an extra helping in before too many other people turn up. Gary joins everyone at the table.

Back in the Rovers, Sean is very relieved when Liz appears back in the bar looking as though nothing is amiss. "I take it he left by the back door?" she asks, obviously referring to Tony. "Coward!" she adds before putting on a falsely bright smile. Everyone else catches each other's eyes and look surprised.

Back at the Nazirs they've got onto the dessert course when Kal arrives. Yasmeen pointedly comments that she thought he was bringing Leanne. Kal makes some excuse about not having a baby sitter for Simon. Yasmeen takes this to mean that Leanne didn't want to come until she picks up on the awkward atmosphere between Zeedan and his father.

Round at the Platts' David's using the self-timer on the camera to take some family photos with Kylie and Max. He says they have to have some photos for the family album to embarrass the children at their weddings or even the grandchildren's weddings. Kylie's face takes on a panicked expression when David asks whether she'd rather be called Gran or Nan.

Tim is looking at the pictures in the newspaper when he's joined by Maddie. He apologises for kicking off before and she says sorry for sticking her nose in. She says she can't believe he called her a do-gooder earlier but it's the first time she's felt able to do something for someone. She goes on admit to Tim that she couldn't have made it any harder for him and Sally when she first arrived, adding that she thought it would all go wrong so she decided she might as well make it sooner and that she must have done their heads in. "Soz," says Maddie. "I'm soz too," says Tim (which, for anyone not familiar with the vernacular, is young-person-speak for 'sorry'). Tim jokes to Maddie to get lost because he wants to get on and read the paper.

Back at the Nazirs the evening is coming to an end and Yasmeen is pressing leftover food onto Gary. Gary calls over to Kal that he hopes he'll take some home to Leanne. "Oh, she missed it mate," says Zeedan to Gary. "She wasn't wanted." Yasmeen's ears prick up and she looks at Zeedan. "Uh, didn't come" he corrects himself. Yasmeen turns to Kal and says she hopes he made it clear to Leanne that she was invited. Yasmeen looks pointedly at Zeedan as she says that she hopes that Simon was the only reason why Leanne didn't come. Zeedan and Gary leave then Yasmeen turns to Kal and says he must make sure Leanne has some of her tagine. Then Yasmeen notices that Gary has left his sweatshirt behind.

In The Rovers Liz continues to serve behind the bar with a falsely chirpy demeanour. Then Deirdre and Ken come in. They order a drink and Ken comments that they'll be drinking Champagne in there when Peter gets home. "Even if he's guilty?" asks Liz, rather sharply. Ken replies that he isn't and Liz says that's a matter of opinion. Keeping his cool Ken explains it's a matter of fact, not opinion. Liz says that nobody knows the facts apart from Tina and whoever killed her. Suddenly it all sparks off and the anger and hurt that Liz has been suppressing over Tony bursts to the surface as she lets rip with her feelings about Tina and everything that's happened. Liz marches off and, in attempt to keep the peace, Sean explains to an upset Deirdre and Ken that Tony's dumped her. Ken says he's not sure that excuses Liz's tirade. Sean says he blames himself entirely for putting his big foot in it about Liz going to see Jim. Hearing this, Deirdre now looks upset, realising Liz did it for her.

Gary is walking back towards the Nazir house when Alya comes running over, clutching his jumper. They're finally alone and they kiss. But the moment they do, Alya pulls away saying she has to go . She runs across the street, leaving Gary standing and smiling to himself.

In the back room of the Rovers, Liz is trying to explain herself to Eva. She says she's been so stupid. "It's how we are'" says Eva. Liz says not her. She adds that it was all her fault and flaming Jim flaming McDonald. Steve arrives and takes over Liz-watching duties from Eva who mouths "he wasn't worth it" at him on the way out. "He wasn't worth it," says Steve, putting an arm round Liz's shoulder. "The trouble is, I think he was ." replies Liz.

Wednesday 8 October

Ken is pontificating about Peter, prison and staying positive through his trial. Tracy is fed up with hearing about it, and Deirdre plonks sandwiches in front of them all, looking stressed and distressed. Rob thinks maybe they should change the subject, but that suggestion greatly irritates Ken, and he wonders if he's the only one who is taking this seriously. At this point Deirdre explodes, she's worried sick as Ken well knows, and bringing it up all the time isn't helping. Ken apologises and Tracy suggests that they don't mention the trial again for the rest of the day. Deirdre offers to cook a nice meal later, and Ken suggests her signature trifle for afters.

Alya and Zeedan are in the cafe when Gary comes in. After exchanging a few pleasantries Alya gets up and leaves.

Eileen visits Liz in the back room of the Rovers. Liz was trying to eat lunch but has no appetite. She supposes that being dumped is one way of losing weight. Eileen persuades Liz to come on a night out and she agrees if it's going to be a quiet drink and a chat – a bloke free zone.

Rob is chatting to Carla in the office when Roy comes over with a cake for her, and to tell her he's been called as a witness for the prosecution. Carla tells him that she has too, and Roy hesitatingly suggests that if she needs someone to talk to..... Rob snaps that Carla has him and Roy is instantly apologetic. Carla hastily tells him that's a really nice offer and assures him that she would far rather talk to him that grumpy Rob. Roy shuffles out and Carla turns on Rob telling him never to speak to Roy like that again.

Michelle finds Steve sitting in the back room of the pub, with a letter calling him to be a witness for the prosecution too. He tells her he's not worried about it, he's got bigger things to worry about – a mole on his arm! As Michelle laughs and tells him he's being ridiculous he voices his concerns about skin cancer, he thinks he ticks all the boxes.

Gary is pushing baby Jake down the Street when they meet Izzy and Julie. Gary has bought Jake some shoes and they are just showing Izzy when Alya comes down on the other side. She stops and watches the scene for a few moments and then hurries on.

Over at the Platt's it's time for Max's tablet but the box is locked and David has the key. Kylie is cross because she feels she's not trusted and she storms off out.

Carla visits Rob and apologises for snapping at him. The Barlows are about to sit down to dinner so Rob invites her to join them, and despite Tracy's objection, Ken is pleased and lays another place.

Outside, Eva sees Kylie at the bus stop and asks where she's going. Kylie says she's just going into town, but Eva doesn't believe her, she thinks Kylie is off to a certain pub. While they argue, the bus comes and goes without Kylie and she marches off down the road.

The Barlows and Carla are sitting round the table making polite conversation over dinner. As Deirdre gets up to fetch her trifle, the phone rings – it's Peter. Tracy answers and tells him that Carla is there. Peter wants to speak to her so Tracy hands her the phone, but Carla just takes it and hangs up, much to Tracy's extreme annoyance, and then leaves the table.

Gary arrives at the old butcher's shop where Alya and her brother Zeedan are working. Zeedan goes off home, leaving Gary and Alya alone. She tells him that the other night should never have happened, it's too complicated they are totally different people from totally different backgrounds. Besides, she points out, he has a wife and kid. He tells her they're not married and they've now split up so he's free to do what he wants. She tells him that she's not, and he must forget all about it. “Please, leave it, for my sake,” she says.

Back at the Barlow's, Deirdre is getting more and more stressed as she searches the kitchen cupboards for the hundreds and thousands to go on the trifle. Carla comes back to the table to a tirade from Tracy. As the two of them snap at each other, Deirdre brings the trifle to the table, she's given up on the hundreds and thousands. She starts to serve it only to find, to her dismay, that the jelly hasn't set. As Tracy and Carla argue, and Rob tries to pacify them, Deirdre finally loses all self control and picks up the bowl of trifle and hurls it over their heads to the wall where it makes a messy impact. There's a moment of stunned silence before she rushes from the room, sobbing. Ken rushes after her and Carla picks up her handbag and leaves, followed by Rob, much to Tracy's annoyance.

In the pub, Steve shows Izzy, Julie and Eileen his mole, and Michelle tells him to go and get it checked by the doctor, if only to put his mind at rest. Julie tells him he can't be too careful, and she and Eva have mole related horror stories to scare him with.

Just then Liz comes out, dressed up to the nines, and informs Eileen that she's changed her mind about the quiet drink and is planning on going clubbing. Julie says she'll come too.

Back at the Barlow's, as Tracy cleans the trifle off the wall, Ken urges a tearful Deirdre to go away for a few days until the trial is all over, and she agrees. When she is out of the room, Ken tells Tracy that as well as the stress about Peter, Deirdre also feels responsible for Liz and Tony splitting up.

Kylie arrives home with bags of clothes, she's been shopping. David tells her they need to chat, and shows her that the key to the medicine box is in the drawer. She says she doesn't blame him for not trusting him, and he tells her he does trust her. She tells him she loves him and the kids.

Carla and Rob are having a drink in the bistro and he asks if she'll be his best man at the wedding. She says of course she will. Then she confesses that she's worried about the trial and feels like running away. He says they'll get through it, and then Peter will be out of her life for ever.

Friday 10 October

Hallo, normally Margaret would be here but she is in a new job. Duncan volunteered but has had to step down so at rather short notice you have me. Not sure who will be here next week - you will have to wait and see!

This episode was written by Joe Turner, directed by Peter Rose and the copyright remains the property of ITV to whom many thanks.

Chesney is sitting at the table drinking from a mug as the action takes places off stage. We hear Beth and Kirk, both having overslept shouting at each other and tripping over each other as they race to get dressed and ready for work. They have to go without breakfast - and they have to keep working to find the money for the wedding. Chesney can see this will not last.

Kylie apologises to David for being a pain yesterday. She wants the family to "run away" for the day. You need to do something crazy from time to time to stay sane. She suggests the seaside. Except - David has Mrs Greenslade this morning special, they are in trouble with the school over taking Max out before and the baby has "Tiny Tots" this afternoon. David suggests they go at the weekend - but Kylie wants it and she wants it NOW! She is not impressed and goes to wake Lily.

Deirdre has gone. The rest of the family gather for breakfast and are talking about the impending trial. [NB Anne Kirkbride has been granted leave of absence by the team for three months. Wherever you are Anne we all hope you will feel rested and able to return at the right time]. Tracy knows how important it is for the whole family to support Peter and she insists that Rob should join the Barlow team. He asks about the shop - but after a discussion agrees to make arrangements and join the family.

Along at the Rovers a hung over Liz appears - apparently she had a dodgy olive the night before and Michelle is highly sympathetic. They can be bad {but not as bad as just too much booze}. Liz says she was in before midnight - Michelle confirms it as she heard signing and falling up the stairs. Steve is looking at pictures of his mole - he has had it more than two years and it is growing. It is classic melanoma. Liz tells him to go to the doctors and get it checked out. Steve was hoping it would go away. Michelle agrees the doctors is the best place to go. Steve was looking for support so both the women in his life offer to join him at the surgery! And whilst they are there they can get Liz's olive allergy checked out as well. The girls laugh and Steve says he will go on his own.

At the factory Sinead is carrying a huge (but probably empty box) and is looking for Kirk, Maddie has not seen him and they look behind some large boxes and find a sleeping Kirk. Carla has joined them and wants to know why he was sleeping on the job - she wants packing happening!

At the cab office Eileen who does not seem quite as bad as Liz is drawing circles around the growing mole on Steve's arm with a marker pen. Steve reckons his mother will live. He has made an appointment for 3:30. Eileen thought she had a new mole - turned out it was a melted chocolate button on her leg. Steve says Lloyd has a heart attack and all concerned are worried - he is merely getting ridiculed. Eileen thinks it really is just a mole and nothing to worry about. And if it is a problem then they will whip it off. Then Eileen spots one on his other arm and marks that one as well. Yasmeen wants a cab in an hour to her home - but she refuses to give directions. She sees no need to advise of its location and advertise it is empty and capable of being burgled.

Steph is walking along the Street and wants Kylie to look after the Bistro for an hour whilst she gets some drugs for her cold - she wants to go out tonight and needs to get better. Kylie says she is busy and cannot help.

Yasmeen stops Leanne in the Street and wants a word. Yasmeen says that she understands that Zeedan did not make it easy for her to come to dinner and she hopes Leanne had some of the tagine (apologies for any spelling errors). Leanne says yes it was really nice and thanks her. Yasmeen is obviously upset that Leanne did not come to dinner - but says no more and departs. Leanne thanks her again for tagine. They turn away and Leanne smiles.

At the Dog and Gun public house (on the estate where Kylie used to live) Kylie plays pool with her old friend and she checks that Callum is still dealing - looks like she is after drugs of her own - and a little less legal than those Steph wanted earlier. A guy sitting at the bar is giving Kylie the eye - looks like he might have a bone to pick.

After the break Carla comes into the shop and trades insults with Tracy. Rob arrives and Carla wants to check if he meant it about the wedding. Tracy wants to know "what about the wedding?" and Rob has to own up to having asked Carla to be his "best man" at the ceremony. Tracy's shouted response is "You've done what" and the camera cuts to Carla dissolving into laughter. "Over my dead body" adds Tracy. But Rob is not giving way - although Tracy then points out it is HER wedding! (To Rob). Tracy asks if he is trying to ruin her special day. Rob points out that Carla is the only family he has got. He wants this and asks her not to make a big issue out of this. Carla promises to only say nice things about Tracy in her speech. Rob points out that this wedding is as important to him as to her. And Tracy will be the star of the day. Carla says she would not be doing it if Rob had any real mates. Tracy agrees - but when Peter gets off next week he will be there front and centre.

In the surgery waiting room Steph is coughing and sneezing next to Steve who believes he is suffering from skin cancer with all of his moles marked up. Steph then announces that his number is up - and Steve rather agitatedly assumes that she means that he is at the end of his life. She points out that it is his number on the waiting system display! He goes into see the doctor.

In the Big House Ken is explaining to Peter why Deirdre is not there and explains about the trifle which was thrown. Peter reports that his solicitor is in a good mood and it is reassuring him that he will be found innocent. Ken is sure he is innocent and in a poor piece of writing Peter agrees he has to be found innocent beyond reasonable doubt. It simply came out the wrong way round. Anyway Ken sees an innocent man and none of it means Peter is a killer. Peter reports that Jim is leaving him alone. Ken says that Carla does not want to talk to him - and obsessing about Carla will not help. Stay calm and confident.

Kylie goes over to the weirdo at the bar who calls her a messed up smackhead. Callum intervenes - but Kylie cannot immediately recall the man. Apparently she torched his car - a red mini - now she does remember, it was a rubbish car. It was worth £2k and he wants compensation. She refuses and with Callum there as well the man walks away. Even Kylie knows he bottled it because of Callum. The pool game continues.

Steve is explaining how his right arm gets a lot of sunshine. The doctor confirms it is a common mole and meets all the requirements of a mole. The doctor asks if he has any other moles and Steve removes his shirt but before we see any more skin we leave the scene thank goodness.

At the Roy's Rolls Maddie Chesney, Beth and Sinead are discussing Kirk's sleep behind the boxes. They need the money for the wedding and Beth wants it to be spectacular. Chesney and Sinead think there may be another way without working themselves into the ground.

Callum wants to know about Max. Kylie says that he might be disappointed Max not robbed or beaten anyone up yet. Perhaps he takes after Kylie (oddly he cannot take after either of them Max is a beautifully fair haired lad and I cannot say that about either parent!). Kylie reckons there is little hope for the lad either way. She reminds Callum she is not on her own any more - but she needs a bit of help to get through the day. Callum reckons he can help her out. And then he says "Welcome home". He knows she will be back on the drugs.

At the Rovers Michelle is worried Steve has not returned. Liz is convinced it is a mole - and then she and Eileen and Michelle start thinking that it might be serious.

Back at the surgery Steve is putting his shirt back on and the doctor has inspected all of the moles and blemishes and assures Steve there are no problems. He has nothing to worry about. Steve does not seem at al relieved. Steve smiles - he says he is relieved and the doctor asks if there is anything else he is worried about. Steve does not want to waste any more of the doctor's time. So he gets up and heads to the door. At the door he stops and the doctor says that a lot of his patients wait until they are about to walk out of that door before they tell him what the real problem is. Steve says "Yeah well I am fit as a fiddle" then sighs but does not move. Then Steve says that he cannot seem to get through the door. The doctor tells him to come back and sit down. Steve sighs again and turns and retraces his steps. The doctor asks what is troubling him and with a very troubled look on his face Steve prepares to answer.

Roll credits - another episode in 30 minutes.

Best bit in this episode - Carla forcing Rob to tell Tracy about the best man.
Second best bit - the doctor having time to listen to Steve
Third best bit - Kirk asleep
Worst bit - Kylie deciding to ask for drugs and then not backing down and getting out there.

See you all shortly.
Richard

Fancy seeing you all again so soon! Where does the time go? This is being written knowing the outcome of Peter's case - but this episode is before it commenced.

This episode was written by Julie Jones and directed by Peter Rose. Copyright remains the property of ITV to whom many thanks.

This episode opens at the doctor's surgery where Steve is saying there is nothing else bothering him. The very young looking doctor tells him to take his time - and Steve says that "well is not sleeping so good ... and ... and he has got all these pointless things going round in my head you know ... I get hung up on ... things that ... shouldn't matter. Driving to the airport - constantly trying to find a better faster route, current personal best is 21 minutes and 12 seconds. If I do the run again I can find ways of doing it faster - new shortcuts ... and then he has people constantly going Steve where are you? Then they are all having a go at him for going awol - and he cannot do right for doing wrong. Listen to me droning on - just feeling a bit under the weather. The doctor keeps nodding.

Kylie is back on her old patch and Sean is buying drinks. Sean sits down and asks what he can do for her - nothing heavy - just a bit of wizz (which for the uninitiated apparently refers to amphetamines - I had to look it up). Kylie and Sean revisit a little past history - she is not doing drugs but has in the past.

Steve continues "I am a nightmare to live with, mess everything up and he does not know what Michelle sees in him now that they ... implying that they are no longer having sex ... The doctor says low libido. Steve says he bets she regrets getting back together. Steve reckons he is a cliche - turned 40 and poor old me. The doctor says he is probably suffering depression and there are options. He suggest counseling to help with depression. Steve denies he is depressed - but the doctor wants him to follow up by completing a questionnaire. The doctor says Steve needs to talk to someone - but Steve is in denial and saying that there is a waiting room of ill people outside gets up and leaves.

Sinead and Ches are trying to talk Beth and Kirk into a wedding based around up cycling in the cafe - shabby chic. Sinead assures Beth she will have an amazing wedding and with a sigh Beth accepts she cannot have the big wedding - but she has not get given up.

Audrey is asking David when is Kylie going to be home - but he has no idea. David does not believe the story that she has gone to Gorton to do nails. David says that he believes she is faking things at the moment. David is trying to be supportive - but it is not being returned.

Jim McDonald walks in on Peter and tells him he is going to be banged up for the rest of his natural. Peter tells him the only reason Liz came in to see Jim was to get Ken off her back. Jim says Peter does not want to get the wrong side of him. Peter says he could not care less. Peter is convinced he will not be staying. Jim says that if he sees his face in there again, he for one will be gunning for him.

Carla and Rob meet in the Street - Tracy is making him go to court so he will be there when Carla gives evidence. Rob is very dismissive of the need to support Peter. Carla shakes her head.

Kirk and Beth come into the Rovers. Michelle greets them with the wedding folder and costings. Beth tells her that the deal is off. Michelle knows they could not afford it. Liz sides with Beth and Kirk on something cheap. Michelle threatens to invoice them for the work concerned. Michelle thanks Liz for her support. Michelle is furious.

Sean is making gibes about David and Max. She tells him to shut up and give her what she wants. She gets angry and goes to storm off - he forces drugs on her as she goes.

After the break Tracy asks Michelle if she has ever thought of improving the smoking area? Then she asks about the helicopter - all booked and the deposit paid Michelle responds. Tracy thought that might be the case - it needs to be cancelled and replaced by a horse drawn carriage so that Amy can be a princess for the day.

Inside the Rovers Ken is telling Rob that Peter is innocent and will walk away. Rob tries to put the other side. Liz wants to say sorry - she let her mouth run away. Ken accepts it and says emotions are running high.

Kylie returns to the Street and starts snapping at Audrey - the latter reminds her of the need to look after the children who rely on her. Ken comes across the Street and they agree that family life never gets easier. Audrey reckons they deserve peace and quiet at their time of life. Audrey is off home for a quick snifter as Alf would have put it. She hopes all will go well in court.

Liz tears Steve off a strip whilst he is sitting in the back room. She wants to know how it was at the doctor - just a mole nothing sinister. Liz asks after his sense of humour failure - she says he seems a bit distracted and she asks if he is OK - he says he is fine. He is still the cheeky chappy - but mothers know when something is not right.

David wants to know what is wrong with Kylie - she can talk to him. She comes clean and tells him she has been sitting in the pub. David says the kids have missed her. He tries to hug her and she tells him to get off and storms out of the house.

Steve is off to the cab office and as he passes Michelle she asks. He tells her it was something and nothing and heads off to work.

Sinead is already working on the wedding and has produced a mood board and assures Beth it will not be boring and predictable - she says the celebs are all going for the simple approach and finally Beth accepts the simple approach.

Peter wants to use Jim's phone - Jim is not happy and wants to know who. Peter wants to speak to Carla. Jim digs the phone out from its hiding place. Jim tells Peter it will cost him. He phones Carla and tells her not to hang up. Peter just wants to hear her voice. He wants to remind her of what they had until he broke it. He loved her like mad and still does - but she is going to tell the truth.

In an alley Kylie opens the paper and looks at the drugs.

David is taking the children for a walk and Kylie sees them leave. Kylie runs for the bus and jumps on ignoring David and Max's shouting. David reassures Max that she will be back. We have a final shot of Kylie on the bus.

Next week we will mainly be in court as everyone tells their bit of the story of Tina's death, apart of course from Rob.

We all know that Corrie has the good and the bad. At the moment I think the whole Steve McD story is amazing - although I am ignorant of real depression (well we all have off days - but it is not the same thing) the whole way it has grown - becoming 40, Lloyd's heart attack, Jim re-appearing in his life, the mole, the airport run and now we have to believe that he is not having sex with Michelle ... wonderful.

And for the ladies the best bit of the Kylie story must be Sean - a new villain but no doubt the bad boy (who might make good over time - who knows) with the good looks. Enjoy ladies.

See you next week.
Richard

Monday 13 October

Written by Joe Turner Directed by David Kester

Peter's trial starts today. Deirdre's been on the phone and considering coming back but Ken decides he's going to call her and reiterate Tracy's assurance that they'll all be there to support Peter. Rob says the trial will change all their lives. Forever. If only they all knew! Tracy thinks he's just showing how much he cares.

In prison, Peter's steady as a rock but his heart's going like the clappers. Clelland takes a good look and reckons Peter will be ok. Peter's ready to fight back. Clelland seems confident that Peter will win. There seems to have been a nice friendship between the two as Clelland wishes him luck before Peter is led away.

Steve is ironing a shirt. He had trouble sleeping but says he's ready for the trial and won't let Peter down. He's even thinking that 20 minutes on the treadmill at the gym will help him stay sharp and focused. Michelle is impressed. I think.

David is griping at Kylie for taking off. She says she met up with mates and went clubbing. She looks like it, too. David is a bit irritated but when Kylie calls herself rubbish, he objects. He picked her so she can't be rubbish. She promises to do better and offers to sort out the kids today. David doesn't think so but she promises, she's let off the steam and feels better for it. But he can see she's in no state to take care of the children. She insists he can trust her.

Kal has agreed to keep an eye on Simon since Simon couldn't face going to school with the trial starting. Steve is sweating on the treadmill when Michelle comes in to chivvy him along. He's going to be late if he doesn't get a move on. But the thought that he's only got 20 minutes to get ready makes him look like he's going to be ill.

Eva comes into the cafe with a newspaper for Todd so he can look for somewhere to live. He complains that he's got no money for a flat and no job. Meanwhile, Anna had been keeping an eye on a group of young men that look a bit shifty in their hoodies and is relieved when they leave. Fiz brings in the cake order. Tyrone is getting his cast off. Roy is a bit quiet and goes off to get changed for court.

Mary and Norris have stocked up on snacks and drinks for court and are heading over to the trial fully armed for a potentially long day. Rob is looking for excuses, telling Carla he doesn't want to leave her on her own but she assures him she'll be fine. Ken and Tracy come out of the house. Rob comes over and lies that Carla's in a state and he thinks he should stay with her. Tracy and Ken are not best pleased. Rob promises to be there tomorrow. Tracy feels like he's not there for her, either. Steve and Michelle are heading to a cab and David is going as well, car sharing with Rita and Steph.

Tyrone and Kevin chat about Roy's state of mind prior to the trial. Fiz pops back out to run back to the cafe for one more cake. She agrees that Roy seemed nervous and she recalls it's soon the anniversary of when Roy and Hayley went to Blackpool last year. Kevin reckons Roy is tougher than they think.

Carla is supervising the movers taking her belongings out of Peter's flat. Rob has come back to help her. He urges her to make sure she gets her revenge or retribution. She needs justice too. Carla points out that what Peter did to her isn't illegal though Rob thinks a 20 year sentence would be entirely satisfying just the same. Carla's clearly on edge and checking the time, knows that the trial has started.

Peter is being led into court with the spectators taking their seats. All Rise and the court is in session. Peter looks back to see who's there and gives them a little smile. Everyone is seated.

After the break, we have Steve pacing in a room where Roy is also waiting. Witnesses, I assume but if that's so, why are Mary and Norris there instead of in the courtroom? Oh I see. Apparently Mary and Norris are witnesses as well. Steve checks the order of appearance. Leanne and Roy are the first two, with Steve after them. Carla will be the last witness. Steve asks Roy if he's nervous. Roy says he is a bit. Steve is obviously very nervous. Roy has a book to keep his attention and he and Steve are both getting irritated at Mary and Norris' wittering. Roy is the first one called. Steve asks to borrow Roy's book!

Kal and Simon find Carla and Rob on the pavement surrounded by boxes and are told that Carla's moving. She assures Simon his stuff is all packed up together. Kal invites Rob to the park with them for a kick about but his phone rings and he takes the call while Simon (who's voice is starting to crack, I think) argues with Carla over an old car that is in the "throw away" heap. Kal's got a plumbing emergency at the gym so Carla offers to keep Simon for a few hours. Simon seems amenable. He's going to check out the rest of the goods before Carla throws it all out. Eva comes by and finds out that Barlows Buys may be closed for a fortnight due to the trial and the honeymoon later. Ching! Eva has an idea! (three guesses and the first two don't count) Carla calls Rob so he turns and leaves.

Roy swears in. He tells his story, wherein he saw Peter going into Tina's flat at 8:30. He saw Peter leaving about 30 minutes later and described Peter as being extremely agitated when he came out.

Anna is mopping up. Kevin is waiting to be served. Rob is in the cafe with Simon, telling him his mother sold all his toys for booze and is dead now. Simon mentions that his real mother is dead too. Peter thinks forming a club would be a good idea. Simon wonders why so many adults are rubbish. Poor kid. Rob says it's harder to be an adult, Simon thinks it would be great, you can do what you want. Rob reminds him that kids don't have any responsibilities. When asked if he wants kids, Rob says maybe, but he'd probably be a terrible parent. Simon seems to think he'd be better than he thinks. (Simon's actually acting like a 12 year old instead of a 5 year old here). Simon says he misses Tina and is sad he never got to say goodbye. That's making Rob a tad uncomfortable as you might expect. He asks Rob if he'll take him to see Tina's grave. Rob isn't so sure that's a good idea. Simon mopes that it proves his point. Adults can do what they want, kids just get told what to do.

The witnesses are sitting impatiently. Leanne has joined them. Steve is pacing again and goes out of the room for some fresh air.

In the courtroom, Roy's love of trains is brought up, and he's referred to, somewhat sardonically, as a trainspotter. He's asked why he thought Peter was distressed and agitated. The fact that it was dark is brought up but Roy explains there was plenty of street lighting. Now the defense is doubtful how Roy could have noticed Peter's state while it was only a quick moment and he was busy closing the cafe. Roy scores a point by saying his years of trainspotting have helped him develop an eye for detail.

Kylie is back at the Dog and Gun and asking Callum for another lot of speed. He says he'll sort her out. She is in a hurry but he delays her.

Carla has come in to get Simon. All Anna can tell her is that Rob and Simon left and Kevin adds that it was 20 minutes ago. Carla is upset because she's not been able to get hold of Rob or find where they went. She calls again.

Steve is in the mens' room and jumps when Norris comes in. Steve is really worked up into a state. Norris reminds him he's not on trial but Steve just whirls around and leaves.

Rob has answered his mobile. He's in the middle of the cemetery with Simon who is sitting by Tina's grave. He hasn't told Carla where they are, though. Simon is getting upset and is crying. Rob kneels down beside him. He doesn't know what to say when the child sobs and asks why she had to die. Rob pulls him to his feet. Simon then launches into Rob's arms, blaming his father for killing Tina. Rob grabs him and says, forcefully, that Peter did NOT kill Tina, he promises. Who did, Simon asks. Um....

Stay tuned for part 2 when Rob will very likely not tell the truth.

Written by Jonathan Harvey and directed by David Kester

Tonight's second episode opens in the graveyard where Rob is trying to convince Simon that he knows his dad didn't murder Tina, without actually telling him how he knows. Rob gives Simon a hug as he tells him to remember his dad isn't a murderer. As he says this, Rob catches sight of Tina's photo smiling up at him from where it's propped up on her grave.

In the court waiting room, Norris is irritating Leanne by reciting tongue-twisters in preparation for his stint in the witness box. Leanne starts to ask a seriously stressed Steve if he's O.K. but then she's the next to be called.

Meanwhile, on the other side of town, Callum is making Kylie wait for her "supplies" while he shows off his new motor. Finally, he tosses a packet out of the car window which puts a smile on Kylie's face, she hands over some cash and then trots happily off up the road.

Back on the street, Carla is tearing her hair out wondering what's happened to Simon and when she finally sees Rob who tells her where they've been she's furious. What's Leanne going to say when she discovers he took Simon to see Tina's grave? Who needs Alton Towers when you've got a cemetery she asks, sarcastically.

In the court, Leanne is being questioned by the prosecution. He wants to know whether Peter was faithful to her and Leanne tells him about the affair with Carla. She's asked whether Peter was ever violent towards her. Leanne says he wasn't. But when she's asked whether Peter was ever violent towards anyone else Leanne hesitates before admitting that Peter attacked her ex-husband, Nick with an iron bar. "Well, we've all done it," Tracy whispers to Ken who looks at her incredulously.

Now it's the turn of the defense to cross-examine Leanne. She asks about the night Leanne found Tina. Leanne describes the scene, how Tina was lying in the road and that she saw Carla standing on the balcony above. The barrister repeats what Leanne has described, ending with the fact that Carla Barlow, the woman who had just discovered that her husband was sleeping with Tina, was standing on the balcony. Leanne looks flustered. Peter nods and allows himself a slight smile.

In the cafe, Roy us busy scrubbing pots while Anna comments that the door keeps swinging open. Then Fiz and Ty come in and ask Roy how he got on in court. He tells them what happened so they invite him around for tea to cheer him up. Then Anna hands Roy the post. We see Roy look at the first envelope; it's addressed to Mr and Mrs R. Cropper. Roy puts his head in his hands. Just then, Sinead and Chesney come in. "Roy?" asks Sinead, seeing his obvious distress.

Back in court, the defense barrister is continuing to question Leanne who explains that at first she assumed Carla had pushed Tina but she doesn't believe that now.

In the cafe, a visibly upset Roy is telling everyone about the letter. It was from the hotel he and Hayley stayed in last year, asking if they would like to go back again at a discount rate. Roy is in a state and announces he has to get on and tidy up. He goes over to have a look at the door that keeps swinging open and as he does so he glances out into the street where there are half a dozen youths in hoodies, looking across towards the cafe in quite a threatening manner.

In court it's now Steve's turn to take the stand. He swears his oath on the bible but is so nervous he even has difficulty telling the court his name. He manages to answer the first few questions about Peter being his friend but when he's asked what advice he gave to Peter about the affair Steve says that he told Peter to shut Tina up. "What's he playing at?" Ken whispers to Tracy. In the dock, Peter looks understandably shocked.

We return to the street where Eva's having a word with Todd on the bench. He doesn't look that impressed when she tells him she think she might have found him a job in Rob and Tracy's shop. But, as she explains, having him living with them is putting a strain on her relationship with Jason and not everything is about him and sometimes you have to take one for the team.

In court Steve's looking more and more like a rabbit caught in the headlights and now he's being cross-examined by the defense. She's trying to get him to admit that when he says he told Peter to shut Tina up he didn't actually mean Peter should use violence towards her. Steve starts to get really stressed and then has an outburst, asking the barrister if she realises what it's been like for him and finishes by asking her how she'd feel if her best mate killed his girlfriend and she thought it was all her fault. Everyone in the courtroom starts to exchange incredulous glances. Peter looks totally shocked.

At Peter's trial, the prosecution barrister is reading out all of the 'formal admissions'. The descriptions of Tina's injuries cause Rita to wince and there are a few exchanges amongst everyone sitting in the gallery. Then the bracelet is passed to the jury to examine while the barrister explains how it was found by Deirdre in the outhouse. Rita winces some more when the barrister mentions the discovery of some of Tina's blood.

Roy is round at Ty and Fiz's for his tea and Hope has drawn a picture of him. Fiz comments Roy looks a bit lonely in the picture causing Roy himself to look sad and lonely.

Steve is back in the Rovers and has sunk even lower into his depression after what happened in court. He doesn't know what made him say he thought Peter was guilty. Michelle and Liz try to reassure him that the court won't take any notice of what he thinks but they exchange worried glances.

Leanne is also feeling bad about what she said in court and has gone round to see Ken and apologise. He's very understanding and doesn't blame her at all. Simon is listening outside the door. When he hears Ken say they may have to prepare themselves for the worst, he comes in and says they won't need to. Ken asks what he means so Simon explains that he knows Peter isn't guilty because Rob told him his dad is innocent. Ken and Leanne look at each other in puzzlement.

Back in the Rovers, Norris is relishing his involvement with the trial. Of course he hasn't actually seen inside the courtroom yet so he offers to show everyone some photos he took on his phone of the waiting room. Steph's upset and points out some of them weren't that lucky and had to sit in court listening to the whole thing. Norris can't understand what's rattled her cage and comments she's milking her role as the injured party - after all, he says, she was only Tina's flatmate for five minutes.

Eva goes over for a word with Tracy and Rob. She tells them she's found someone to take over the shop while they go on honeymoon. Tracy misunderstands and in true Tracy style tells her the customers will find Eva's "assets" a bit too distracting. Tracy manages to slip in several more bitchy comments while Eva explains she's talking about Todd who is listening in from the next-door booth. Deal done, Eva goes and speaks to Todd and tells him now she's sorted a job out for him, he can start looking for somewhere to live.

Tracy shouts across to Steve behind the bar that he was pathetic on the stand today. Michelle jumps to his defense and the two woman start an exchange of words. Steve tells the pair of them to pack it in. "She's right. I was useless today. No change there, then," says Steve as he wanders off, looking like he has the cares of the world on his shoulders. We see him help himself to a measure of whisky.

David's sitting on the sofa when Kylie comes bursting in, full of life and appearing as though she's on speed (which, of course, she is). She babbles on, asking how his day was but obviously forgetting all about the trial. When David, clearly down in the dumps, tries to tell her one thing about his day Kylie asks him to change the subject and says she's fed up about talking about flippin' Tina as it's getting her down. Kylie's rushing around to get something for their tea but a miserable David tells her not to bother for him, he's going out to get some chips.

Tracy and Rob arrive home to find Ken sitting at the table, looking very serious. Tracy asks how Amy is but Ken says it's Simon he's more worried about. Looking at Rob as he speaks and raising his voice, Ken says that he knows Peter is innocent but they can't definitely say that he'll be coming home. Tracy looks confused and glances at Rob. Rob tells Ken he was just trying to bolster Simon up a bit. Ken mentions the "chat" that Rob had with Simon at Tina's graveside. "You took him to Tina's grave?!" exclaims Tracy. Ken goes off to bed and Tracy starts to question Rob. Rob gets angry and says he's sorry he showed an interest in Simon and claims he was only trying to help.

It's lights-out in the prison. As Peter lies in his bunk bed, his cell mate tells him that tomorrow's another day. He says that he knows things look bad but juries are fickle. At the moment Peter's the dish of the day but when his missus is on the stand they'll have someone else to lay their suspicions on. Peter says he wishes he could protect her. "Will she be trying to protect you?" asks his cell-mate. Peter says she hates him and that when she takes the stand tomorrow, bearing in mind everything he's done to her, she's going to make sure he suffers.

The scene shifts to Carla who is standing in her empty flat, drinking a glass of red wine. We can only try to guess what's going through her mind.

Wednesday 15 October

Behind the scenes in the court, Peter is waiting nervously for the day to begin. He's nervous because today Carla will be in the witness box.

Back in Coronation Street, Carla calls at the Rovers for Michelle who's not quite ready - a problem with her hair it seems, and Tracy is leaving Todd in the shop with instructions not to buy anything, only to sell.

Ken and Rob step outside of their front door as Leanne walks up the Street. She makes sarcastic remarks about Simon's state of mind after his talk with Rob. Rob apologises and says he wasn't thinking. Then Tracy comes out, ready to go, as Carla and Michelle come out of the pub. They all get in their respective cars and set off to court.

In the back room of the pub, Liz and Eva are enjoying a cuppa. Liz looks at her phone briefly, but it wasn't Tony texting. She tells Eva she doesn't care - but if he were to text she could ignore it and then he would know she didn't care. Steve walks in looking morose and gloomy. Liz remarks on him not going to court today. "Well, I suppose you've done your bit," she says. Clearly the wrong thing to say. Steve gets to his feet. "Thanks Mum, I'm going back to bed," he snaps and off he goes.

In the courtroom, Mary is in the witness box, telling the prosecution how, on the night of the murder, she saw Peter appear from Rosamund Street in an agitated state, and how he was rather abrupt with her. She noticed scratches on his face and he'd told her he'd been scratched by a cat. Peter's defense counsel asks if she'd been drinking at the party and she confesses that she had. The counsel goes on to ask Mary if maybe Peter was agitated because he was in a hurry to find his wife and tell her about the affair. The prosecution then stands and announces to the judge that they don't intend to call Norris to the stand, and goes on to call Carla instead. Rob looks worried.

A clerk enters the witness waiting room and announces to Norris, to his dismay and disbelief, that he won't be required, he's free to go. "That can't be right," blusters Norris, "I have important evidence to impart!" Carla is summoned instead and leaves Norris stuttering and incredulous.

In Coronation Street, Roy is watering the flowers outside the builder's yard, when Chesney comes running down the street chasing four teenagers who have apparently short-changed him. They stop and there follows a rather unpleasant exchange which Roy gets involved with. Just as it's looking like it might turn nasty, there's a shout and an irate Anna comes rushing down from the cafe, telling them they don't frighten her and they can get lost. They wander off, and Anna turns to Roy and asks if he's all right. He says he is, and shuffles off back to the cafe.

Carla is in the witness box, telling the prosecution that Peter's manner was edgy and nervous, and then they went into the back of the pub and he told her about his affair which started on the night of their wedding. She goes on to say how Tina had turned up earlier at the party with a packed bag, expecting to run off with Peter. Instead she found him toasting Carla's pregnancy, so when Peter went round to her flat later she had made threats and attacked him.

Todd goes into the cafe and announces proudly to Eileen that he's got a job in Barlow's Buys. She's not all that impressed.

Back in court, the defense counsel asks Carla what she did when she found out about the affair. She admits that she went round to have it out with her. Peter's counsel reminds her that when she went through the bar several people heard her threaten to kill Tina, and then later she was seen on Tina's balcony. Carla says how she looked in the flat but, not finding Tina, she went out on the balcony. The questions from the defense go on and on, making Carla's situation look worse and worse, until Peter eventually jumps to his feet telling the barrister to leave Carla alone. The judge tells him to sit down and be quiet or he will not be allowed to remain.

Liz goes into the cafe and finds Eileen there. She asks if Eileen has seen Tony, but she hasn't. Liz then tells her she's heard drumming coming from somewhere outside - it sounds like Animal from the Muppets, only not as good. She then adds that it could have been coming from Tracy's shop, but there's no one there so it couldn't be.

Carla tells Peter's barrister that Peter wanted to tell her everything before Tina did, and the counsel points out that this could mean that he thought she was still alive, and therefore did not kill her. Eventually Carla agrees. "I don't think he did kill her," she announces to the court.

The judge tells Carla to stick to the facts, not her opinions. Carla replies that they are based on facts, and goes on to explain that when Peter saw Tina being put into the ambulance on that night, he looked at her, genuinely shocked, and said, "What the hell have you done?" And then adds that when he was in hospital, thinking he was dying, Peter asked to see her and told her he knew she'd killed Tina. Carla reckons that if he thought she'd done it, it meant he couldn't have. She's asked if anyone else was there at the time, and she said there wasn't, but adds that she told her brother but he said it wasn't solid enough to go on. Ken and Tracy stare at Rob with expressions of disgust on their faces.

In Tracy's shop, Todd is beating hell out of a drum kit when Eileen comes in. Sarcastically she tells him he could always start a band and call it 'Feckless'.

The Corrie residents are leaving the court, discussing Carla's testimony. Ken asks Rob why he never told them what Peter had said. Rob stammers that he thought it was the drugs talking, or he was messing with Carla's head. Carla herself then appears and Ken thanks her for being so honest.

Todd goes into the cafe and tells Eva and Leanne that after flirting with a woman customer she offered to let him her spare room. Suddenly Roy, behind the counter, announces to all that he's closing. Anna wonders if it's because of the lads, and says he shouldn't let them get to him. She then realises that this is all connected with Hayley, and he confesses that he can't seem to let go of her.

A delighted Peter is back in his cell, telling his cell mate about Carla's testimony. He's sure she still loves him.

Roy knocks on Tyrone's door and asks if he and Fiz will accompany him to Blackpool so he can scatter Hayley's ashes.

Back at home, a worried and agitated Rob demands to know what on earth Carla thought she was playing at, saying she thought Peter was innocent? She snaps back at him that she does, and they end up arguing. She thinks Rob has a personal vendetta against Peter, but Rob says that Peter was messing with her head. She ends up telling him that sometimes it feels that it's Rob who isn't being straight with her. They argue some more and then Rob tells her to wait until tomorrow when Peter's on the stand. They'll rip him to shreds.

Friday 17 October

Hello again. I had hoped Duncan would be here tonight, but allegedly he has had to go and write something to earn some money so turned down the unpaid gig at this end of Update Towers. I could do with a paying job too - the car is due the annual MOT and service plus the car tax so it is an expensive month.

Right you are ladies and gentlemen, time to visit a thoroughfare in Weatherfield where the lasses are bonny and the lads are likely to end up in prison. This particular episode of events was written by Chris Fewtrell, the director was David Kester and ITV are responsible for the copyright and therefore with many thanks to them. This is series 55 episode 202.

Above the cafe Roy is looking through a photo album of pictures of himself and Hayley when Anna comes bustling upstairs to say good morning. She asks what he would like in his butties for his trip to Blackpool but he says all of the choices would be nice. She will do a selection but there is not need for a flask. He holds her ashes and Anna hopes all goes well. Roy thanks Anna.

At the factory Carla and Sal are discussing the imminent arrival of Waddles who are looking to make some big purchases although Sal thinks it is an unfortunate name for an underwear outfit. Carla hopes she will keep such views to herself as Kerry Waddle is hard enough to impress as it is. Sal is sure she has heard it before and it might be a good ice breaker. Carla is adamant - do not break ice with Kerry - skate! Rob wants a word and Carla tells Sal to make some coffee. No pretext - she does want coffee. Rob says he went overboard last night - but he is daft enough to care. Rob wants her to stay away from the court - but she says she will go if she wants.

Liz comes over to Eileen on Maxeem's bench wearing fluffy slippers and Eva comes past. They both remark on her unusual footwear and she observes that no-one ever says anything about her killer heels! Eva reports that Todd has moved out - to Eileen's surprise. Some flat and not on the Street apparently. Liz observes that if chucked off Manchester Town Hall roof then Todd would still land on his feet. Liz's phones pings with a text message - then heads back to the Rovers.

In the public seating Norris is observing about lambs going for slaughter when nudged by Rita as Ken, Tracy and Rob arrive. Norris offers Ken a humbug and Ken agrees that he is. Ken asks Norris to remain seated and not to circle overhead during the proceedings, Ken would appreciate it. Tracy seeks to reassure Ken and Rob looks shifty. Peter Barlow is called to the stand. Tracy holds hands with Ken and Rob.

Roy is eating a barley sugar to alleviate travel sickness as he explains to Audrey who says that driving is not a lot of fun at times. He is going to Blackpool to spread Hayley's ashes. Audrey does not know what to say. Roy thanks her for being understanding. She walks over to the garage and speaks to Kevin about her car. Luke is in charge and will get it purring by lunchtime.

At the cafe four youths are hanging round and they drop a can which he picks up and puts in the bin to their cheers. He climbs in the car. The youths shout "See you later Roy".

The court is about hear the evidence when Carla arrives in court. Peter is answering questions from his counsel - Tina was unharmed when he left her. Peter did not deny that Tina scratched his face. He explains he went to see Carla to tell her about the affair on his terms, rather than Tina doing it. He loved Carla and wanted to minimise the pain. He had the affair because he was weak and she was young and a lot of fun and it was an escape from the realities of life. He did care about Tina - too much to do any harm.

After the break we are in the Rovers and Eileen is observing that Liz must have grown a good three inches since earlier this morning. Liz says she is never going out in her slippers again. Liz's phones p'tings again. Another text. Apparently the fifth time today and in answer to Eileen's query it is NOT Tony - wrong ex. It is Jim McDonald so it is. He has got a mobile and he is pestering her. Eileen says she needs to nip it in the bud. Liz is just waiting for the end of the trial so she can tell him where to stick his text messages.

Sal and Tim are having a drink at the bar and discussing Waddles' Underwear. Tony comes into the bar and he checks he is not barred and just wants his usual. Eileen says that once he has had that he will want a drink. Liz asks Eva to serve him on the grounds that she has better things to do - indeed anything else would be better.

In Blackpool it is a blustery, nay very windy day [the team who got landed with this job must have found one of the very few days this summer when the weather was not perfect!]. Roy has two bags - his usual one and the one with ashes. Anyway they are on the same spot. He rolls up his trousers and paddles into the sea.

Luke has finished work on Audrey's car and he says it is now in better than new condition because he has been working on it and tuned it to perfection. She is not convinced and on looking inside the car alleges that he has failed to clean up the oil which he has smeared everywhere whilst working. Maddie looks on incredulously throughout the conversation. Audrey cannot start the car and gets out of it. Maddie says she has valeted the car but Audrey says not well enough and asks for it to be done again. Looks like Audrey has lost confidence in driving!

Back in court Peter is now being cross-examined by the prosecution counsel. Peter says he is not proud of what he did. He was confused. Did he make it clear he was staying with his wife? He did. So he was going to discard Tina once he had his fun. Peter tries to explain the credit card and train tickets. Peter was going to tell Tina it was over - he was simply buying time. None of this makes sense. Peter had been trying to Tina out of his life for months (which looks plain awful as he says it).

Back in Blackpool Roy is putting his socks back on and Ty wants to know where the ashes should be scattered. Roy talks about traditions elsewhere - cremation and burial in a long boat. Two old people are failing to open a deck chair and Roy helps them. They thank him for his assistance. The couple obviously love each other and Roy upset rushes away.

Eileen tells Liz off for being uncool staring at Tony who is playing darts with Tim and Kev. Eva observes that she doubts Tony is scoring well the amount of time he has spent staring at Liz! Liz observes that until he makes the first move looking is all Tony will be doing. Eileen and Eva smile. Kev tells Tony to throw the arrows and Tim observes that Tony is obviously hoping that one will get lobbed over from the other side of the bar as Liz and Tony again avoid looking at each other. Kev says he is in for a long wait if he expects Liz to make the first move.

Roy apologises to Ty and Fiz for bringing them on a fool's errand. Roy says it is a mistake - some places cannot be returned to - they become lost off the map - this is no more the Blackpool of 12 months ago than this (referring to the ashes) is Hayley. Fiz tries to reason with Roy. But Roy says this is not Hayley - she has gone and no meaningless ritual will solve that. They sit and Fiz says Hayley lives whilst Roy lives and this is the last thing they can do for her. Roy says he cannot accede to this request of Hayley - it may be nothing - as he cuddles the box containing the ashes - but it is all he has.

Sophie and Maddie are outside the cafe which has a small sign "back in fifteen minutes" but they notice the door is ajar and the woodwork around the lock is broken. Anna is returning from getting change and she sees the problem and calls the police.

Prosecution are still asking questions. Peter agrees that Carla and the unborn baby meant more to him than anything else. But Tina threatened this family. Again Peter agrees. Peter agrees that he and Tina argued violently. He left the flat agitated and with scratches on his face. Peter says yes. He admits he lied to witnesses about the scratches. Counsel then says that he admits entering the ginnel where the murder weapon and bracelet were placed in the outhouse of number one. Peter denies going near the outhouse. Peter cannot explain his fingerprint on the bracelet - but cannot remember the circumstances. The prosecuting counsel then suggests that he told Carla about the affair to distract attention from him. Peter does not stay calm and is rocking back and forth in the witness box. Peter says that the allegations are wrong - it was simply time to tell the truth - but he is now shouting and worked up. He was at breaking point he shouts. And his own performance is not going to help his plea. We see the faces of Ken and then Rob as the prosecution counsel says no more questions m'lud.

Roll credits.

The story about Audrey losing confidence in driving appears to have come out of nowhere in very short order.

Things are not going well for Roy at the moment. And we have some more to come.

Meanwhile if Tony and Liz do not resume bedroom relations soon the conflagration will be impossible to extinguish.

Nice to see Kev and Tim enjoying a pint and some arrers together. Any minute now Sal is going to realise Tim prefers the company of Kev to her!

See you soon.
Richard

It has been a relatively quiet time at Update Towers recently. During the week however we went to see Marti Pellow as Che in Evita - the lady playing Evita is the real star however. Dinner afterwards was at the Criterion Restaurant in Piccadilly Circus. A very good meal was enjoyed in what must be one of the best dining rooms in London. Good service too. The day after this episode was transmitted I had the great good fortune to watch my team put 8 goals past the opposition. You do not see results like that very often in the Premier League.

Anyway to events in Weatherfield. Tonight's spicy little number was written by Simon Crowther and directed by David Kester whilst the copyright remains the property of ITV to whom many thanks.

Events continue at Roy's Rolls where Anna, Maddie and Sophie are checking round following the break-in. No significant damage but Anna wants to tell Roy before anyone else does.

In court Peter is explaining why he needed a cigarette in the ginnel before breaking the news to Carla.

Maria and Audrey are discussing juries and Maria is bewailing the lack of a man. Luke arrives with the keys to Audrey's car but she still refuses to collect it and starts coming up with excuses for not driving. Luke suggests that he will accompany her; she denies she is scared - but he suggests a trip into the country and Audrey accepts she has to go. Maria tells Luke to look after her.

Peter was explaining he told Carla the entire truth as he wanted to keep Carla and that was his only chance of maintaining his marriage, also he was expecting Tina to turn up at any moment (in the gallery Rob asserts otherwise - saying Peter already knew she was dead). Carla's response to the shocking and unexpected confession - and that it all started on the wedding night. No one else knew except Tina. So the damning detail was given because Tina would have revealed it. Carla was furious and stormed out saying she was going to sort it out with Tina. Steve then sat with Peter - he was mainly worried that Michelle would discover he knew about the affair. They did not move until they were told that there was something wrong outside - an ambulance had arrived. Peter went out to see what was happening - he did not think it was connected to Tina. And then he saw her being put into an ambulance. He felt shocked and confused. She was a nice person and it was a mistake getting involved with her. However it was over between them so he had no need to kill her - it is not part of him to kill.

Roy returns and goes to the door - and sees the damage. He finds Anna inside and she explains what has happened.

Kev, Tim and Tony are still playing darts - and they have another round. Tony is waiting for Liz to crumble and Liz is waiting for Tony to apologise. Liz tells Eileen that she has had enough of men throwing their toys around; the one thing she does not like in a man in stubbornness. Well there are a few other things! Eileen graphically rolls her eyes! Liz just wants him to admit he is in the wrong. She says there is no chance that she will be the one to cave. Over at the bar Tony expresses his feelings for Liz to Eva. He says that Liz is being stubborn and he cannot abide a woman who is stubborn and sulky or gives out the silent treatment. (The words exactly mirror!). Eva says that Liz wants him back and he says that of course she does - but he is better off single. If she said sorry he would forget about it (exactly the same words as Liz again). Eva reckons he does not tell Liz the entire truth and he semi-admits that she might have to ask the right questions. So no immediate reconciliation there, but a lovely piece of mirrored scripting and acting. They stare at each other.

Upstairs in Roy's flat it is a mess - it has been turned over. Roy says it was the teenagers who did this - mindless vandalism, wilfully destructive. Only bored disillusioned youth. The police arrive - but a picture of Hayley has been screwed up.

Following the break we return to court where the prosecuting council is making his summing up statement. He draws a picture of Peter's wrong doing. The missing charm, plus Tina's blood and his fingerprint appear to be the main evidence "proving" his guilt. Peter Barlow alone was responsible - a manipulative serial seducer. Do not let him seduce you.

Anna is fussing around Roy and Ty returns. Ty says it is bad luck - but Roy explains about the youths outside - when they came in they destroyed the cctv like professionals (Roy has cctv - amazing). Anna cannot raise Owen to get repairs made. Ty goes to get Jason. The photo album was destroyed. Anna says she should have been more careful. The police depart.

Jason has been trying to get hold of Tony - but no phone. Eva tells Liz what Tony said earlier. She also reports that Tony does not like arrogant women - whilst Liz does not like arrogant men! No closing the gap then.

defense council presents her summing up statement. "Why would Mr Barlow admit to damning details of the affair if he thought Ms McIntyre was already dead?" Was this a logical step for a man who has just committed murder? The murder of the only person who could verify those details. The brief tries to dismantle the "grand plan" of which Peter is accused. And a reminder the finger print was not on the charm. And there is no sign of a bloodied iron bar in the out house and no blood stains on his coat. (Aside - I thought this defense statement was weakly put. The counsel should be seeking to establish "reasonable doubt" in the minds of the jurors and she does little or nothing that we hear or see to provide the possibilities of either Carla or a third party being responsible).

At the salon Audrey has eventually returned. She has had a lovely afternoon. They went for a drive and found a pub overlooking the whole of Cheshire where they had a marvelous sandwich. She extols Luke's abilities to Maria. She never realised how fascinating it was to be a mechanic. She had a chicken wrap, Luke had a ploughman's and he insisted on paying. But Audrey is still feeling a little nervous driving on her own so they will be going out together again. Right says Maria knowingly. Audrey observes that Luke has the most wonderful eyes you know and she likes his smile - lovely isn't it? And he has got such lovely delicate hands for a mechanic. [Audrey is in love]!]. Luke comes in and returns the car keys. And says he will see her the next time. Audrey preens herself.

Jason has fixed the door. Anna is not sure what to do with the damaged trains.

At the Rovers a last pint is being consumed by Kev and Tim who are getting on very well. I think they might just be turning into best friends forever!

Todd returns Eva's keys - he has moved out of the flat. Tony puts his glass on the bar and as he is going Eva asks him if there is anything he wants to say to anyone nodding and swivelling her eyes towards Liz. He says "Who?". Eva leaves the two of them to chat. Liz says she would rather change a barrel and heads off to the cellar. Tony states that she only has to say one little word. She hears and turns round and says she can think of two. And they semi-glare at each other.

In the cafe Roy is clutching his bag (containing Hayley's ashes) to him and Ty asks if he is going to be OK as he and Anna are going. He assures them he will be alright. Roy thanks them as they depart and then he not only locks the door but places a chair under the knob and then a table against the chair.

The judge is summing up the evidence. It is a brutal and heinous crime and they must base their decision only on the evidence heard in the court - they must not consider Mr Barlow's character as an adulterer -they must simply reach a conclusion if he was responsible for the murder of Tina. If they are not sure they must reach a verdict of not guilty and they must be unanimous. The jury retire. [Awful summation - but then clearly the defense argument was not well put].

Roy is wandering around the flat holding Hayley's ashes tightly. He sits at the table and takes her ashes out of the bag and looks for somewhere to put them safely. He opens a cupboard and puts them therein. And looks around the room, feeling scared, oppressed and very alone.

Roll credits.

Where do we stand then? Well if you are accused of murder do not use Peter Barlow's defense counsel - she was pretty limp if you ask me. If there is reasonable doubt then he might have a chance.

Clearly Liz and Tony will make it up at some point or this stand off would not be continuing. It saved on writing time tonight - using the same dialogue twice over but was entertaining for the viewer!

And Roy - I hope this is not going to be a long term story that damages Roy - he is far too valuable, perhaps once she has resolved her problems with Peter, Carla will be able to help Roy back to a good place. Or perhaps Yasmeen's centre will get the youths into a useful place in society.

See you next week.

Monday 20 October

Written by John Kerr Directed by Tim Finn

Sinead and Fiz chat about the possibility of Peter going to jail. They saunter over to Roy's and ask how he is, post-breakin. He says he's ok, as well as can be expected. He ushers them in to the cafe.

Today might be the day the jury brings down a verdict. We don't know for sure but Ken's got a load of shopping in from Dev's in case Peter gets to come home. He's confident that the jury will see that Peter's innocent. Rob runs across to see Carla who's got a meeting later on. She isn't going to the courthouse to wait and see if there's going to be a verdict today. You can't blame her for not wanting to waste all that time on a "Maybe". She straightens Rob's tie and sends him back across the street.

Kylie is straightening out Max's clothes and looking at him with a lot of emotion but she tells him she's just starting at his beautiful little face. David gathers him along to walk to school. Kylie says she's going to clean up and cook for Gail and Michael who are due back later. David is surprised. He unlocks the box and gives Max a pill. Even though he's already let Kylie know where the key is, she still looks a bit stricken when he does this. David and Max leave and the instant they go out the door, she's digging in her purse for a wrap of speed and gazing at it, what to do, what to do? Take it? Not?

Roy tells Fiz and Sinead that he hasn't heard anything from the police. Anna has a little rant about the hoodlums and hands him two plates of food which he takes over to Fiz and Sinead, but has forgotten who ordered what. They gently sort out the plates. Fiz thinks he should take the day off but he prefers to keep busy. Fiz invites him to go to the pub for his dinner with them later. Anna insists he will go.

Peter is doing sit ups in his cell to pass the time and keep focused. Jim comes in and mocks him. Peter says he's confident he'll have the luck to be freed but Jim isn't so sure.

In the pub, Michelle wonders if Steve is going to go to court and if so, he needs to get changed. He's worried that if he's there and Peter is convicted, he'll feel worse. She says he can stay and keep Liz company if he doesn't want to go. Liz interrupts and says she's going to see Jim and put her foot down. She's going to tell him that she's not coming again and is sick of him interfering in her life. Michelle asks Steve if he's coming with her, as she'd prefer it if he did come. He agrees and she thanks him. He goes back to get changed just as Tony comes in. He and Liz are a bit snarky to each other.

Ken comes into the cafe where Leanne, Kal and Simon are having a bite to eat. Simon has his phone and is insisting his dad will get off. Rob promised he was innocent. Kal and Leanne try to temper his high hopes but he's not having any of it. Kal takes Simon back to the flat to keep him occupied with some video games, leaving Leanne and Ken to talk. Ken wants to talk to her about what will happen no matter what Peter's verdict is. Owen comes in and he's got a letter in his hand and bad news. He has to go to court for a repossession hearing on the house. She's pragmatic about it as they figured it was coming. they'll have to start looking for somewhere to live.

Roy is sitting with Beth, Fiz and Sinead at dinnertime. Roy changes the conversation away from the break in but he can't think of anything to talk about. When he says he watches documentaries, it seems her idea of one and his are vastly different. Over at the bar, Liz is ready to go. Eva says she'll be fine there on her own and finds out that Liz is going to the prison. Tony overhears and makes sarcastic remarks and the pair trade insults. Tony tells Eva he won't be making up until Liz says she's sorry. Good luck with that, mate.

At the courthouse, Rita and David are sat in the corridor. Norris joins them and Michelle and Steve arrive. Tracy and Rob chat with Steve and Michelle. Steve apologizes to them which gives Tracy reason to bite his head off but Rob smooths things over and they all sit down too.

Roy leaves the pub with the girls who are heading back to work. Sounds like he's carried on an extensive conversation on steam trains. The girls go to work and Roy heads back to the cafe but he spots three youths coming and he hurries around the corner, clearly frightened to confront them.

Over in the prison, Liz and Jim are settled in. She scolds him for phoning her non-stop and then lays down the law. She's not coming anymore. She only came because of Peter and has no feelings for him. He doesn't seem to believe her, yet. He says he's on the list to be moved to an open prison and that means he could have day releases and come to see her anytime he likes. They could get back together, he could come home! She's horrified, not chuffed.

Tracy has cancelled her dress fitting. Ken thinks she should have gone but Tracy, for once, has done a non-selfish thing and just as well because someone comes out to tell them the jury has come back with a verdict and court will soon be in session. Ken's face drains of colour and he's the last one on his feet. Rob assures him it will be ok.

Liz finds out that Jim has known about the move for awhile and he's only had to keep his nose clean. She realizes all this has been a plan. All his guff about the visits being the only thing keeping him going behind bars was just that, emotional blackmail. She points out there is no future for them. She states firmly that she doesn't want to see or hear from him again and will call the police if he shows up at the pub. He starts to get angry and tries to use guilt, thinking she'd be grateful he looked after Peter for Deirdre. Wrong thing to say. She gives him the evil eye, gets up with out a word and storms out, leaving him with his head in his hands, realizing he'd blown it. She turns back and whispers, she and Steve are finally rid of him.

Carla and Sally greet their customer, Mrs. Waddle. But she's very curt and is in no mood for fripperies like compliments and she doesn't have much approval when Leanne comes over to have a word with Carla. She says it's important so Carla sends Mrs. W. in with Sally. She's going to be a tough customer. Leanne tells Carla that the jury is coming back. Carla says it's not her concern anymore but thanks Leanne for the news. She's more concerned than she lets on, though.

Roy has finally got back to the cafe where he finds Anna looking through property rentals in the newspaper. She admits the house is going to be repossessed. They don't know where they'll go but something will come up. He shows her to a table for a break.

In Underworld, Mrs. Waddle explains why she's looking for a new factory to produce quality product on time. Carla is a bit distracted and she's handed a list of quantity and prices.

Kylie is on her way back from the shops with a load of food to cook and runs into Eva. She says Michael and Gail are due back and she's cooking a meal. Eva is impressed that she's got so much energy. Wonder where that came from?

Carla has assured Mrs. Waddle that they can meet the needs but she's clearly distracted. Sally tries to take up the reins but the client scolds Carla, having had the feeling that she'd rather be somewhere else. Right you are, and Carla gets up and leaves Sally to it. Sally is flustered but pastes a professional smile on and turns back to the client.

Owen returns to the cafe to walk Anna home. He sees them out the door then hurriedly locks up behind them, lodging a chair under the doorknob for good measure. Outside, Anna tells Owen that Roy lent a good shoulder to lean on. He says they'll find somewhere close so Faye won't have to change schools.

Peter is waiting with the solicitor, hoping against hope. The guard comes to fetch them. Peter wonders why it came down so quickly but the solicitor doesn't say whether a quick verdict is a good thing or a bad one. Peter takes a deep breath before they head to the courtroom where Ken is looking deathly pale and worried. Everyone watches Peter come into the dock. Carla rushes in and sits down, telling Rob she's a glutton for punishment. The jury foreman stands and affirms they have agreed on a verdict. Peter glances over his shoulder at his family and then faces the music as the episode ends there.

Is he guilty or not guilty?

Finally, the moment comes that everyone in the court has been waiting for so if you don't want to know the answer, please turn away now.

You can almost hear a pin drop as the foreman of the jury gives their unanimous verdict: guilty. Peter grabs onto the side of the witness box for support, Ken mutters that they've got it wrong and Tracy looks shocked. Peter's barrister asks for some more time before addressing the jury. The judge announces that sentencing will take place on Friday and Peter is taken down.

Simon is in the kebab shop with Leanne and Kal when the news comes through on his mobile phone. He cries out that they're saying his dad's guilty and that they're liars before rushing out of the shop. Leanne rushes after him, leaving Kal behind to mind the shop.

As Carla leaves the court, Rob stops her and gives her a hug. But Carla doesn't share his euphoria and, when Rob says he hopes they lock him up and throw away the key, Carla can't understand why he's quite so happy.

Back on the street, Leanne is trying to comfort a very distressed and angry Simon. He's clinging on to the fact that Rob said his dad didn't do it but Leanne tells him nobody saw what happened the night Tina died and they have to trust the court's decision. As she hugs him tight she tells Simon to remember his dad loves him and he always will, no matter what.

Meanwhile Gail and Michael arrive back from their jollies to find Kylie seems to have turned over a new leaf. The house looks tidy, she has a meal on the go and she appears to be full of beans. Kylie tells them David's on his way back from court but once she's imparted news of the verdict she's keen to change the subject.

Sinead, Beth and Fiz are in the Rovers, discussing Peter. Beth claims she always knew he was guilty. They move onto the more cheerful subject of Beth's wedding dress. Sinead's worried her design has too many embellishments or, as Fiz puts it, all the sparkly bits make it look cheap. Beth look cheap? Whatever next?! She glowers at Fiz. They ask Sean his opinion. It turns out he's never been a fan of glitter ever since an unfortunate incident involving sparkly confetti and a gale force wind. Then Roy comes in for the second time that day. He claims the cafe was very quiet, orders a tomato juice and joins the three women which is distinctly out of character.

Round at Anna and Owen's Anna is dishing out plates of spaghetti while they fill in Gary about how they're about to lose the house. They tell him that Faye doesn't know yet but they're hoping to stay in the area so she won't be too badly affected. Faye then comes in and they carry on as though nothing is amiss.

Back at the Rovers Roy is ready to buy another round but Fiz has to leave. Sinead's about to go too but when it looks like Roy will be stuck with Beth she catches Fiz's frantic look and decides she can stay a bit longer after all.

At another table Sean is gossiping to Eileen and Tony about Carla leaving Sally in the lurch with a client so she could go off to the court. Liz comes through from the back just as Tony goes up to the bar to buy a drink. Eileen asks Liz if she would like one but when Liz sees who's paying she declines. Then Michelle and Steve arrive back from the court. Steve's face is so long it makes him look as though he's the one who's facing a life sentence for murder.

Next door, Ken, Tracy and Rob are also arriving home. Ken slumps into a chair. Tracy tells him he needs to phone Deirdre and tell her what's happened before someone else does. Rob comments that she must have been half expecting it. But Ken isn't listening. He says he can't believe his son has been locked up. (You'd think he'd be used to it by now but I suppose murder is a step up from bigamy). Ken's thoughts turn to Simon. In a rare moment of compassion Tracy reassures her dad that she doesn't often agree with Leanne but she knows she'll look after Simon. Rob adds that Simon will be fine. Ken asks the world in general how anyone in the family will ever be fine again.

Round at the Platts' Gail is waxing lyrical about the holiday, oblivious to the fact that David and Kylie are on another planet. Kylie gets up to clear the plates and have another quick look at the packet of speed in her handbag. She hastily puts it back when Michael comes up behind her. He tells her David's lucky to have someone strong like her in his life. Kylie's expression shows that the irony isn't lost on her.

In the Rovers all talk is of Peter and the court case. Rob and Tracy walk in just as Eileen's saying that if you don't want to do the time, don't do the crime. Tracy tells the assembled company that they make her sick, picking over the bones of other people's misfortunes. Liz tries to pour oil on troubled waters which gives Tracy the chance to have a go at her about Jim. Liz disappears out the back. Then it's Eileen's turn to have a go at Tony for the way he's been acting with Liz. Michelle suggests he should go and talk to her as she's dead upset. Eileen can't believe Tony's pig-headedness - he wants to go after Liz, she wants him to go after her, so what's stopping him?

Meanwhile, Steve's in the back room, trying to persuade his mum to make the first move with Tony. She goes off on one about how men are scheming and manipulative and then explains she's referring to Jim, not Tony. She admits to Steve that Jim's been calling her using an illicit mobile phone and then tells him how Jim's going to move to an open prison and that he's known for ages. Steve is furious, especially when he realises that his dad pretended to want to see him when all along it was just so he could get in touch with Liz. He storms out and says that first thing in the morning he'll be "up that prison".

Carla goes into the Rovers. She's surprised to see Roy in there so Sinead whispers to her about the burglary. Roy tries to brush it off but Carla looks concerned and tells Roy if he needs to talk he should ring her.

Carla orders herself a glass of wine. Michelle suggests she should take it easy but Carla points out her husband's just been convicted of murder. Then Tracy starts having a go at her so Carla decides she's not going to stay for a drink after all. Rob rushes out after Carla, thus upsetting Tracy.

Anna, Owen and Katy are doing the washing up and talking about how the move will affect Faye. But when Faye comes downstairs looking for her maths book and picks up on the news she doesn't seem that bothered by the idea and says most of her schoolmates live in flats.

Out in the street Rob is hurrying after Carla when Leanne comes rushing out of the kebab shop and confronts Rob. Carla wants to know what's been going on so Leanne explains he's been filling Simon's head full of ideas that Peter didn't kill Tina She adds that now Simon thinks that when the trial's over Peter will come home and everything will be back to normal. Leanne marches off and Carla turns to Rob, looking confused.

Roy's getting ready for bed. He hears noises out in the street and goes to look out of his bedroom curtains. We see him pull a cricket bat out of the wardrobe before throwing it to the ground then sitting on his bed with his head in his hands.

Leanne has taken Simon round to see Ken. Ken gives him a hug and tells him that whatever's happened, Peter will always love him. But Simon says he doesn't love him. Ken gently suggests he'll take him to see his dad. But Simon says he hates Peter, he doesn't want him to be his dad and he doesn't even want his name. He wants to be called something else. He wants to go back to his mum's name and be called Simon Richards. "He murdered Tina and I don't want anyone to know he's my dad," sobs Simon before falling into Ken's arms.

In the prison we see Peter being led into an empty cell. He has the expression of someone in total shock. As the door is locked behind him he lies down wordlessly on the bottom bunk.

Back on the street Rob is with Carla who is arguing with him about what he said to Simon. Why on earth would Rob say those things since he, of all people, was so convinced of Peter's guilt? Rob tells her that Peter's now been found guilty so she should let it go. But Carla says she can't because no matter what he or the jury think, she happens to believe Peter is innocent.

"But if Peter didn't kill Tina then who did, eh? Who?" Carla asks her brother.

Wednesday 22 October

It's breakfast time and an angry Steve confirms that he's going to visit Jim, although he's not sure what he's going to say to him. He's cross because Jim used him to get to Liz, and Steve feels he's been stupid by believing him.

Over at the Platt's, Kylie is tired and tetchy. David wonders if she's coming down with something, so she plays on this and says she's feeling a bit clammy . He suggests she takes the day off, and she says she'll think about it.

In the Barlow's house, Ken is reading an account of the trial from a newspaper, annoyed because what was allegation before is now being reported as fact. Rob looks increasingly uncomfortable as Ken reminds them that the blunt instrument has never been found and probably has the real killer's fingerprints on it. He's off to see Peter later, they have 28 days in which to appeal. Tracy is then worried that they may have to postpone the wedding.

Roy is on his hands and knees, removing chewing gum from the floor of the cafe with peanut butter, much to Tyrone and Fiz's amazement and. Roy asks them if they'd like to come to dinner later, but they can't because of the children, so they invite Roy to their place instead.

In the salon, Audrey is raving on about how lovely Luke is and how he's looking for a new car radio for her. Just then Maria rushes in, the school have rung to say that Liam isn't feeling well and she has to go and fetch him. Audrey says she'll do her client. Katy is sitting in the chair and remarks how hard it must be juggling a child with a career.

Kylie is in the salon but obviously still not feeling right as she brings Katy a coffee when Katy had actually asked for tea. Audrey tells her there are paracetamol out in the kitchen and Kylie goes out there. Once there, she first take the drugs out of her bag, but then thinks better of it and puts them back, taking instead the paracetamol.

Tony is sitting with Eileen and Jason. They discuss his relationship with Liz, and he reckons it will be back on when Liz apologises. Eileen urges him to swallow his pride and he scoffs, until he hears Liz talking in a flirty manner on the phone with the guy from the brewery.

A stressed and snappy Yasmeen is packing up the books in the cafe, aided by her husband and grandson, ready to take them to the community centre. Then Kal comes in and she asks him to go fetch a fridge for her from the second hand shop. He asks Zeedan to help him, but Zeedan isn't keen until Yasmeen gets cross with him.

Steve is sitting opposite Jim, but he's not saying a lot at first. Then he tells Jim that he feels used. "You've lost me?" says Jim. "No," says Steve, "it's you who's lost me."

Audrey and David leave the salon. They're off to do the hair of the residents in an old folks home. Left alone, Kylie rushes out to the back, about to take her drugs, but is foiled by Maria who has come back to work bringing Liam with her. She stuffs the little package into her makeup bag and takes it into the salon with her as she starts sweeping the floor. However, no sooner does she turn her back than Liam goes over to the makeup bag and starts to open it. Kylie spots him and shouts loudly at him, upsetting the child and annoying Maria, who rushes to cuddle her son.

Back at the prison, Steve continues to rant at Jim. He's annoyed because Jim told Liz he's going to be there for years, all the time knowing it isn't true. He's been reeling her in, hoping he can pick up where they left off, and if that doesn't work he'll lace it with threats to beat Peter up. Jim splutters that it isn't true, but Steve is on a roll now. "Well, two can play these games," he says and to Jim's astonishment he hails a guard and tells him that Jim has been using a mobile phone to harass Steve's mother. Jim, spitting venom, makes to lunge at Steve when the guards grab him and haul him away. "I'll have ya!" roars Jim as they drag him off, "I swear to God I'll have ya!"

Tony, somewhat apprehensively, walks into the back room of the Rovers where Liz is applying her lipstick. "What do you want?" she demands to know. He says he's wants to see how she is, how she's been. "So?" she snaps. "I care," he says. "Apology accepted," says Liz. They then argue a bit over the fact that she lied to him, and how she went to see Jim to help Deirdre. Then Liz's phone dings with a message. Tony wants to know if it's Greg (he was obviously worried when he heard the phone call earlier) and he snatches the phone. She wrestles it off him and she ends up apologising to him about lying before, and then they're hugging and laughing!

In the Salon, Maria tells Kylie she's still waiting for an apology for shouting at Liam. Kylie snaps that it wouldn't have happened if Maria didn't treat the place like an after school club, and she should keep her son under control. Maria snaps that she's not the one who has to medicate her son so he can sit still. Just then Audrey and David come back in and want to know what's going on. They continue to squabble so Audrey sends them both home and tells them to come back tomorrow in a better mood.

Peter goes to the shop to see Tracy and Rob, and tells them that Peter is going to appeal, and he wants their wedding to go ahead. However, appeals don't come cheap and he's going to have to sell the shop. Rob and Tracy stare at each other, dismayed.

Back at the Rovers, Liz and Tony are now in the bar planning on a meal later at the bistro. Laughing Liz waves her phone and says she'll see if Greg has text her a better offer. Tony says Greg is a four letter word he never wants to hear again. "You do know he's gay, don't you?" says Michelle who is drying glasses behind them. Just then Steve comes back in and tells his mother that Jim won't be bothering her again, but he doesn't want to talk about it. He goes off through to the back.

Roy arrives at Tyrone's and Fiz's, and Sinead and Chesney are there too of course. Tyrone asks Sinead if Beth and Kirk have a caterer for their wedding yet – maybe they should ask Roy? Roy says he'd be delighted to do it and it would be his wedding present to them. They agree to talk about it tomorrow.

Just then there's a loud, frantic knocking on the front door and Tyrone goes to answer it. As he opens the door, Cilla bursts in, shoving a large hold all into his arms as she pushes past him. "I knocked at Kirk's," she says, "he said you were over here!" They all turn and stare, dumbfounded. "Well, don't look so pleased to see me," she says.

In the new community centre, Yasmeen is ordering Kal and her grandson about, getting them to move the furniture and fittings, as her husband puts the books on the shelves. She tells them she's decided to name the place Jamila House, after Kal's late wife and Zeedan's mother.

Back at Fiz's, they are all sitting down to eat and the conversation is stilted and strained. Cilla tells them she's back from South Africa and now living in Wolverhampton. She asks how long Sinead and Chesney have been seeing each other, what happened to Katy, and if Fiz still has just the one child. Fiz tells her they've also got Tyrone's little girl too. Cilla says she can't wait to meet them all. Fiz tells her she could have seen them every day if she hadn't moved abroad. Fiz then demands to know why her mother is there now. Cilla says she just wants to see her children and grandchildren. "Well you could have let us know you were coming," snaps Fiz. Cilla replies that she didn't know she needed an appointment. Chesney notices that Cilla's wrist is strapped up and asks what's wrong with it. Cilla brushes off the question, saying she just gave it a bang. The conversation rolls along with Cilla firing off questions. Then she turns to Roy. "Where's your other half? You've not split up from Hayley have you?" she asks. Roy tells her about Hayley, and there's an embarrassed silence and then Cilla goes off to the bathroom, leaving Chesney to wonder what she wants. "There'll be something," says Fiz.

In the pub, Michelle wonders if Liz and Tony will be moving in together soon. Tony says his flat is a bit small, so Liz says that if Michelle doesn't mind he can move into the Rovers. Michelle says she doesn't mind. Just then there's sound of Steve, clearing his throat loudly. "What do you reckon love?" says Michelle. Steve, however, is not in a good mood and snaps that he's surprised they've even bothered to ask him, they treat him like a joke most of the time. He continues a tirade, telling them that he grassed his own father up today – do they know what that's like? He'll probably get an extended sentence now, and they just think he's a waste of space. They stare at him in amazement. "You know what? I may as well not even exist!" he shouts, and goes off out to the back again.

Hi folks. Let me get the bad news over quickly. While Margaret is away (learning how to pick up a telephone!!!), and Duncan is busy writing elsewhere, you are stuck with me!!!!!!!!

To be perfectly honest, I watched this episode and when I finished, I suddenly remembered I was supposed to be making notes for the report. So I had to watch it again !

So we start with Cilla waking up on the sofa muttering about her cashcard. There is an empty can of beer on the sheets.

Cilla apologises to Fizz and Tyrone about all the inconvenience of her being there and offers to treat them to dinner. She then says that the sofa is lumpy and that she is going back to sleep in Fizz and Ty's bed.

At the Barlows, Tracy tells Rob that her mother is staying with Bev (mother of former barmaid Shelley - neither of whom have been mentioned in many years), and her (Bev's) brother has died and Deirdre is staying with her and would therefore will miss Tracy's wedding (In real life the actor is taking a few months off for exhaustion). Tracy is very annoyed. Rob tries to pacify her by saying that it is probably better as her mother tends to show herself up at these occasions.

Michelle remarks that Steve had a very disturbed night. She is not sure what is wrong. Steve apologises to her.

In the salon, Maria is having sly digs about Kylie to Audrey. David tries to calm them down. Audrey tells her that her 1pm appointment has telephoned and now her daughter wants her nails done as well. Audrey reminds her about hygiene procedure, as the woman is 'hot' on health and safety.

The Nazir family are putting the finishing touches to the Community Centre. Yasmeen decides something is 'not right'. She realises that the bookcases are in the wrong places. Zeedan protests they are where she wanted them. However, she demands they be moved to the other side of the room..

Kylie's phone rings in the salon. She says it is Mrs Alexis, the woman whose nails she is supposed to be doing. She says she wants her to come round immediately.

Michael is chatting to Steve in the cab office about Japanese traditions. Michelle comes round and invites Steve to the bistro for lunch. Steve says he is unable to because 'Fat' Brenda has a stomach upset. Michael confirms that she is okay and she is coming in soon. Steve presumes he has got his wires crossed.

Kylie meets Callum in the pub. He offers her a game of pool. She says she doesn't want to play, but he manages to give her some drugs.

Norris, Rita and Audrey are waiting outside the new Community Centre. Norris notes it is called Jamila House. He wonders what Jamila is. Audrey thinks it maybe a hairy fruit. Rita then asks what is a hairy fruit, to which Audrey responds that Kiwi Fruits are hairy. Emily suggests that Audrey takes orders for a quick trim before eating ! Norris is getting annoyed as it is past 1pm.

Inside the Community Centre Yasmeen is happy the bookcase has been moved but then complains that the books are not in any sort of order.

Back outside, Norris is complaining that it is still not open. Emily offers to go in to find out what is happening. Zeedan comes out to apologise that they have some last minute snags.

Tracy and Rob arrive. Rob's phone rings. Tracy has left her phone in the shop. Rob passes his phone to Tracy. It is Ken who tells her that Peter has been sentenced to a life sentence with a minimum of 15 years.

David arrives home without Kylie. Gail asks where she is and David explains she is on a mobile job. Gail tells him that Michael is reading up on Japan and its customs. Michael says it is so different from his childhood. Gail expresses concern to Michael about David and Kylie.

Callum tells Kylie that he wants to see Max, his son. Kylie doesn't want this.

Everybody who was outside the Community Centre has gone to the Rovers. Yasmeen comes in an announces a delay in the opening of the Community Centre. She asks everybody to come back in an hour.

Michelle come to the bar and tells Liz that she is taking Steve for a romantic lunch.

Callum tells Kylie that they have both changed. She says she cannot stay as she has to pick up Max from school.

Michelle is alone in the bistro and is ringing Steve. Tracy and Rob come in. Tracy is annoyed that Michelle is there and not planning their wedding. When Rob tells Tracy that he has upgraded their honeymoon to First Class, Tracy's mood immediately changes!

Yasmeen finally opens the Community Centre. Norris asks Zeedan what Jamila is. He explains that it was his dead mother's name.

Steve is in the back yard of the Rovers, as Michelle finds him. He says he forgot and has had "one of those days". Michelle says he will join him for a chat and drink there.

Audrey arrives back at the salon. David is annoyed that she has had three hours for lunch. She says she has been supporting the local community. David explains to Audrey that a client is coming back to have her hair redone as she is not satisfied with it. He says Maria has gone off to pickup Liam. The phone rings it is Mrs Alexis. It seems that Kylie didn't turn up.

Kylie runs to the school to see Max at Callum's car.

Will Callum take Max? What is going to happen with Peter in prison? Will the real murderer be caught? Will the police realise they have charged the wrong man? All this to follow in the following days!

Martin Rosen

This is series 55, episode 208 and it was written by Mark Wadlow, directed by Tim Finn and the copyright remains with ITV Studios to whom many thanks for their continued efforts in entertaining us.

We open at the school where Max in contravention of all he has been told is talking to stranger Callum. [Locally we have to go into the playground and wait and anyone not recognised is challenged - I know this because of the few times I collect our grandson Max I am usually questioned]. Kylie tells Callum he cannot go near Max - but as Callum points out they are related. Kylie seems more worried about David finding out than anything else. Callum reckons that just adds to the buzz and he offers to give them both a lift home. Maria is approaching and Kylie tells Callum to get lost, so he roars off in his white car which he has been sitting in throughout. Maria asks if she is alright - Kylie claims she has been telling one of the dads that Max cannot make a party. Maria nods and they walk back together.

In the smoking area at the back of the Rovers Michelle is in ultra concerned and trying to be gentle (which is most not-Michelle) she says "Steve I'm not trying to get heavy with you." She just feels he is acting strange and she does not know why (and of course she is looking like a million dollars). Steve has the face of someone who is worried but does not know why. She adds that after Peter and Tina she thought they had decided that they were going to be honest with each other. But now whenever she wants to try and talk to him ... he just ... well ... clams up. As she talks he looks around as if looking for someone else to talk to or a reason for getting up and walking away from the table; he is like a fish out of water. She continues - Just look at him now (well don't - it is a wonderful picture of someone on the edge and really uncertain) - Steve has gone back into his shell and cannot even look at her. She asks if this is down to Peter - is he still in shock? Steve hides his face in a hand and says that it is simply not easy to talk about all this stuff. And Amy comes to his rescue appearing through the back door with Tracy to show off her bridesmaid's dress. And he gets up and Michelle looks resigned at getting nowhere as Steve admires the dress - Tracy says she begged to get dressed up. They all agree she looks beautiful but Michelle looks as if she has tears in her eyes as she looks on. Tracy tells Amy to keep away from the mucky fence. Steve is pleased to see her in the dress. And then Steve feels some rain and reckons they should all go in because they do not want the dress ruined and Michelle knows the moment to talk to Steve has vanished - he has found a release. Michelle looks so worried and concerned that she cannot get through to Steve.

Along at the Platt residence David is looking after the baby when Max and Kylie return. Five minutes until tea time. Kylie is wearing a very large top - it still seems stuck on a bump!!! David asks if Max and Kylie are OK. Max says he met a man with a post car at the school gate. Kylie claims it was a mate's dad who is a show off. David wants to know which mate and Kylie claims it was Zane's dad and asks about tea to change the subject. Apparently Gail has done shepherds' pie. AGAIN. David has a flyer on cookery classes for kids, suggesting they sign up Max who has become interested in cooking and it might be a laugh. Kylie is underwhelmed. She says she cannot drop one of her mobile clients. David asks after the client and Kylie tells him a pack of lies about getting another job.

At the new community centre Yasmeen wants to say a few words. She says her family thought she was crazy wanting to rent the shop - but now = Kal interjects that they still think she is crazy. Laughter. But now says Yasmeen they also said that no-one would be interested. But she says the opposite is true - with many new friends lending a hand to get the centre opened she knows the place will be successful and she wants it to inspire and instruct. She wants to thank a special person (and most of those gathered believe that dear dear Emily will get mentioned in dispatches) and that person has gone to great lengths, pulling out all of the stops possible. So she wants to give a huge thank you to her husband Sharif! (Huge disappointment in Emily's corner). In another corner Gary is flirting with Alya, calling her feisty. She agrees. He asks her out. She says there are a hundred reasons why not. And he says that is not a problem - he would like time to get to know a girl instead of it all being about - well you know.

We move over to the Rovers where Amy is in the bar (does the Rovers have a child licence - it seems unlikely). Tracy tells Amy to sit quietly and play on her phone. Carla with new much lighter hair colour (she is not quite blonde yet) is getting a drink. Steve comes into the bar and says he is off to work as they are short of drivers. Liz tells Tracy Amy has to go but she responds she just needs a quick drink to calm her nerves. Liz points out there is nearly a week till the wedding. And Michelle agrees saying that even the last details are sorted. Tracy says she has pre-wedding jitters, she wants everything to be perfect. She has some pictures of the hair style she wants on her phone. Amy refuses to surrender the phone and Tracy knocks over a drink trying to get it - which luckily misses the wonderful dress! They go home before any damage is done. Carla asks Michelle if she wants a drink and the latter responds that she needs one!

Over at the Dog and Gun Kylie storms in and tells Callum to stay away from Max. Callum says he wanted a shufti to see how he had turned out. Callum reckons the lad has his eyes and would be good in a fight - not as good as his Mum Kylie replies. She again tells Callum to stay away from Max - Callum just shrugs - clearly he will do what he wants.

Cilla's back, larger than life (indeed larger than before) and meeting the children for the first time. Chesney warns Joseph to guard his piggy bank. Cilla says she is chuffed to meet him at last. Chesney clearly cannot stand Cilla being around and "acting like a normal family" but Sinead tries to keep the situation under control. He calls Cilla a lousy mother. Chesney does not believe Cilla has just come to see them - nearly six years and then she suddenly appears.

Back at the Dog and Gun, it is clear that Gemma has had a touch too much as she sways out of the toilets to the bar. She tells Kylie not to be boring and leave her alone. She wants her hair dyed black and asks if Kylie can arrange it. Kylie says she only does nails. Kylie tells Callum again to stay away from Max - if only for Max's sake as it would screw with his head as David is his dad and he is a good dad. Callum reckons he could be a good dad - nice car and plenty of dosh. Kylie points out the money comes from dealing drugs. Callum calls Kylie a user in both senses of the word. Kylie re-iterates that Max has a family with a job and a nice house, she does not want to lose any of that so will Callum just back off? He calls her sexy when she is angry. She says he will never see her again if he persists. Callum says he was merely curious, he does not want regular weekend access. Kylie says not a chance and he replies telling her to calm down and take a chill pill - he has a supply to hand! She agrees to a drink when Gemma at the bar falls off her stool and lies on the floor shaking and clearly having a fit.

After the break Kylie and Callum are trying to help Gemma and decide they need to take her to hospital and do not have time to wait for an ambulance and blue flashing lights - Callum says it will be quicker in his car. Callum gets a couple of the lads to help carry her to the car. He then tells Kylie to get back to her hubby and her boring pathetic little life.

In the Rovers Carla is asking Michelle about her problems. She says it is Steve - that something has changed and she does not know what it is. Liz chips in that perhaps Steve is feeling guilty over what he did to Jim, although she is glad that he did it. Michelle is sure that he has gone off her and Liz acknowledges that Steve has definitely gone off of her. Eileen agrees - Steve is a right moody so and so at the moment. And Michelle reckons it must be her fault as she must be making him unhappy. She admits she cannot get him to talk about it and then he goes into his cave and then she feels worse - and she is making it worse by drawing attention to the problem. She is unsure, perhaps she should just accept that he no longer feels the same way about her.

Stand by for the most surprising announcement of the year. Cilla "He's right, I was a lousy mum." And then she looks at Chesney and adds "You are supposed to say I was not THAT bad". But he remains silent as the grave. She claims she had good points. She put chips on the table every night and they could drink all the pop going - a kiddie's paradise in fact. She carries on that it would serve her right if none of them wanted anything to do with her. The longer she stayed away the harder it was to phone up. even though she missed them so much; but they are still family. Fiz weighs in that Cilla has hardly lifted a finger since she arrived, not bathed the kids and hardly played with them (so not much change there then). Cilla points at her strapped up arm, which Ches reckons is part of the act to get sympathy in his view. He asks how the accident happened to her arm. He suggests that she was drunk and got in a fight. Cilla reckons that her long absence is the cause of the problem. She realises that she was mad to think she could walk back into their lives.

Back at the Rovers Michelle reckons she should stop wittering - Carla has much bigger problems to worry about. Carla still cannot believe the length of Peter's sentence (it was a murder!). 15 years will mean Simon will be a grown man by the time he returns and Peter will miss all of those birthdays and Christmases. Michelle is more worried about Carla than Peter, but perhaps she can move on now. Carla rejoins "What like Tracy has, you mean - after all she is hardly shedding a tear for her brother is she?." Carla adds that it looks like Tracy could not care less about her brother.

Back at the Community Centre Kal is concerned about Katie who has been dragged in as waiting staff - which is not really her job. She does not want to be taken for granted and he acknowledges that. Meanwhile Alya is asking Gary if he has ever been out with anyone he does not sleep with. He says he can think of a few he wishes he had not gone out with. She calls him a stud. She says she is flattered but it would not work. He carries on trying to prove it will work. She reckons that sooner or later he thinks she will not be able to resist him, so when he realises the truth he will hate and resent her. So they should stay friends. He cannot just be her friend - he wants more no matter how hard it is - but not in that way. She smiles.

Kylie arrives at A&E with Gemma. A nurse arrives with a wheelchair and Kylie reports that she collapsed in the pub and may have been taking drugs.

Cilla is moving around with difficulty and Sinead returns and sits her down. Cilla thought once upon she could do anything - but she just threw herself at fellers. Sinead wants to know the truth. Cilla says she has osteoporosis which means she has very thin and brittle bones and it is very painful. She swears Sinead to secrecy.

A doctor (?) appears and tells her that Gemma Winter is doing well and they will be keeping her in for 24 hours to monitor for side effects of the drugs. Kylie is allowed to see her. Kylie says once she is out they need to get her straight. Kylie says she cannot continue living like this. Kylie's phone goes - she has to get back to her family - but she will visit tomorrow.

At the Platt residence the wonderful Maria has turned up with some milk for which David lavishes praise. They had lots but it has gone sour. Maria says that Kylie was weird at school earlier - David thinks something is going on but does not know what. Kylie phones to report she is on her way back - but David's tone of voice implies he does not believe her.

Steve is on the switch taking a call when Michelle arrives and apologises for earlier. Steve ends the call. She had hoped he would be home by now but as she was all alone eating her favourite pud and she thought that if Steve cannot come to the black forest gateau then the bfg could come to Steve. Steve remains non-responsive, no smiles for his better half and no cheeky grin or reply. He manages a "great" between sighs. She adds "Two plates, two forks and conversation is not compulsory." Steve looks almost relieved.

Kylie returns home. David is washing up. She apologies for being late but David does not believe her. The kids have been good. He suggests she stops the mobile nails as it is simply taking up too much time. She counters that the money is good (well then where is it?). David says money is not everything. He could have painted the house in the time she has taken over one pair of nails. She lies claiming she has done three sets of nails. David snaps and says he wants to know everything - names, addresses, exact treatments. Kylie cannot get her lies in order and breaks down in tears.

Michelle is eating the cake and says it is lovely but Steve hardly touches his and says he is working. She says she will go. As she departs Steve says he loves her (and btw I really think he does). He ends the call and again holds his head in his hand.

David is telling / asking Kylie - that none of her mobile clients exist do they? It is all lies? "I am not stupid Kylie I know where you have been." She looks at him and asks if he followed her. He says he has no need to, because he knows her. It is the same as Christmas - she has been out drinking. She cries. He says he know she has been standing up the clients because of the drink. She is partially relieved that he does not know the truth that she says she is so sorry and cries even harder. David thinks he has the truth and holds her. She says tonight was the last time - she means it because she does not want to lose him.

Roll credits.

Well Kylie has semi convinced David that it is merely alcohol and nothing stronger, but we know better don't we boys and girls [and perhaps the girls might comment on the relative attractiveness of David and Callum because I am unable to provide judgement - but the bad boys usually win the girls].

Cilla - now the question must be does she really have osteoporosis or is it all an elaborate con? It might be true - and Sinead has fallen for it but Chesney will not believe it in a million years.

And finally repeating comments made here previously the current story around Steve and Michelle is outstanding both in content and execution. Simon Gregson has of course been around a long time and normally has not much more than enjoy life's lighter side with comedic moments and an ever changing growing list of beautiful women on his arm. Tonight one really had to feel for him and Kym Marsh - through all the difficulty they showed that their characters care for each other but are they coming to the end of the road (again?). We have seen soap breakdowns before - Arfur in 'Enders many years ago - but this story is being stretched over a long period and many elements are contributing. And so far we have avoided the inevitable end of programme announcement "That if matters in this episode concern you then please contact ..." But I suspect they will come.

In the meantime this is entertainment and tonight covered taught us about the dangers of drugs and chocolate gateau.

Be in touch next week.

Tracy is having a Bridezilla argument over the phone with her harpist and ends up sacking her. Rob wants to call her back but Tracy decides it's not worth the aggravation. Talk turns to Peter's 15 year sentence. Ken wonders if he'll even still be alive when Peter gets out if the appeal goes badly. Rob every so helpfully points out that if they lived in Texas, Peter would be facing the electric chair. Charming. She mentions Rob's upcoming stag do, a night in with Carla, with disdain.

Kylie is on the phone to the hospital to find out how Gemma is. She finds out Gemma is discharged and is relieved. She hangs up as David comes in. He assumes she's hungover from being out at the pub yesterday. Before any further conversation, Gail comes in from the garden, having been run ragged by Max. Gail mentions a kids' cookery class at the new community centre later and Max is well up for it. Gail takes Max up to wash his hands. Kylie avoids David's questions on why she's so quiet but deciding she's going to take the kids to the cookery class instead of Gail.

We're in the cafe now. Gary's there and smiling as Alya has come in with flyers. She makes several suggestions that are not going to work, with Gary watching her and agreeing silently with Roy, but with a cheeky grin. They settle on the notice board at his suggestion. Katy comes in next to get Joseph's soft toy from Chesney. There's a bit of conversation about Cilla who may be leaving today. The leaflets are starting to be passed around, Maria having seen one and she's come in after Katy, recommending the kids' class for Joseph. Gary and Alya flirt.

Rob shuts up the shop, on his way to get his suit. Carla walks by and says that Ken has a visiting order to see Peter and asks Rob if he's told her everything. Quite all out of the blue, it seems, right there on the street. Rob reminds her that Peter was convicted but she implies that innocent people do get sent down. He tries to explain that he thinks she's just grieving for her lost marriage, her mate, and she has to move on. It's not so easy. Rob urges her to let it go at least until after the wedding. Michelle strides by, busy on the phone trying to scare up another harpist.

Kevin comes into Streetcars to let Steve know the results of a cab being serviced. Gail comes in with lemon drizzle cake for Michael and Eileen. She pops back out. Eileen puts Michael's bad mood down to being with Gail, (well, she would, wouldn't she?). Michael shows her an appointment to get the results of his cardiology tests. He's scared witless to hear them. He's sure he's on borrowed time. Eileen finds out that Michael hasn't told Gail that the results are in. Eileen insists she'll go with him.

Carla discusses miscarriages of justice with Roy. Roy points out some of the evidence, like the bracelet in the back yard. Carla points out there are other people living in that house. Beth and Fiz come in and call Roy over to serve. Fiz passes over the cake order while Beth harasses Carla into going to the hen night. Carla isn't up for it. Beth does know that Tracy can be difficult but she has seen a different side of her when they were roomies. Even Fiz tries to cajole Carla into going. Carla says she has to keep the groom out of trouble.

In the Kabin, Michael and Kevin are discussing old time magazine ads with Norris. Michael pays for some headache tablets and leaves. Emily comes in with a post office card for Norris for a deliver. He gets all flustered and goes into the back to call them to rearrange delivery.

Beth has a case full of hen night accessories for Tracy including a pink boa and the traditional L-Plate (for those that don't know, when you're learning to drive in the UK, you put a big L on the back of the car so people know you're new on the road). Tracy is disdainful of it all. Been there many times, chuck. Everything is kind of tacky but she agrees to wear a banner. Ken returns and tells her that Peter is in a blue funk. Ken, ever so helpful, has encouraged Peter to start a journal to record his feelings. Tracy is polite but teases him anyway. Ken apologizes that Deirdre isn't there but Tracy hugs Beth, saying she's got her mate. (the only mate).

Rob brings a big bag of Thai food to Carla's. She's thoughtful. Rob tells her that the subjects of the trial and Peter are off limits for tonight but she explodes in a torrent of analysis, like the police picked the culprit and tailored the evidence because there are all kinds of people in the house. Rob keeps trying to divert her, accusing her of being selfish. It's his wedding and she's not lifted a finger to help and she can't be bothered to be supportive of him. He even tells her to leave if she can't get on board (even though it's her flat!) After the break, she's got the wine open and she's apologizing. She pours them drinks and they start to laugh when she calls herself a selfish, obsessed cow and he brings up something that sounds like "fun" or "phone" or something similar, I couldn't make it out but I think it was something that meant something to them, possibly from their younger years. Carla mentions Tracy and Rob doing a bunk from their engagement party and he says he got a crick in his neck from their shenanigans on the settee which threatens to put her off her food.

In the pub, Tracy has a few people in the booth with her, Beth, Sinead, Fiz and Izzy. Izzy doesn't think she'd ever want to change her name. Tracy is bitchy about Izzy not being asked to marry someone. Sean is asked to join them for a drink. He does look awkward, like a spare part. Good old Emily toddles in with a card. Tracy opens the card which has a religious design on the front and a verse inside on what love is from Corinthians 13, a lovely verse, but Tracy is dismissive and disrespectful of it. She and Emily go to the bar and Fiz and Izzy both mutter that they don't even like Tracy. Sean asks Tracy and Emily, where's the stripper? As he says that, Chesney comes in, giving the girls reason to whoop! Chesney tells Sinead that he was supposed to go to Tyrone's for a last bevvy with his mam but she went to bed early. Sinead knew she was poorly but though she doesn't seem to have gone into detail, Ches doesn't believe her anyway. He goes off, leaves her with a kiss. In the back room, Michelle is trying to hire some sort of musician, a guitarist at the moment.

Carla decides to go out, ostensibly to get a bottle of champagne for them to have in their orange juice for breakfast but doesn't let Rob go with her. Does she have another destination in mind? She forgot her wallet and Rob had to call her back for it. Hmmm...

Gary and Alya meet on the street, which must have been pre-arranged. Gary surmises maybe the real reason she doesn't want to date him is because he's a bit of a loser whereas she has a bright future. She insists she's not a snob and she knows when someone is genuine and kind. It's mutual admiration between them but she pulls her hand back when he goes to take it. Slowly... she reminds him.

Carla has come into the pub and is chatting to Liz who's recalling that Deirdre didn't approve of Rob at all at first but has come to really like him. Liz is glad to see people having fun. The last party they had in the pub was the engagement party where Tina died at the end of the night. Liz mentions that Tracy left the engagement party on her own at one point. Carla finagles Liz into the ladies' loo on an excuse to talk to her while Fiz, Izzy and Sean fire up the karaoke, singing the every so appropriate "Band of Gold". Carla and Liz talk about the other party in the loos, Carla subtly questioning the timing of Tracy's exit with Deirdre following her not that long after. Tracy comes out a a cubicle and she tells the story that she and Rob were up the stairs like rats up a drainpipe. Not the settee, then? You can see the alarm bells ring in Carla's mind. The stories don't match. Tracy and Liz go back into the pub, leaving a thoughtful Carla.

David has tucked up all the kids while Kylie is finishing the washing up. She affirms she's staying in with her family and they chat about the fun they had with the kids today. After he goes back upstairs, she takes out her drugs and washes them down the sink.

Carla has returned back to the flat to find Rob wiping off the dishes. Carla comes at him, wondering why he didn't call off the wedding. Instead he's suckered in the whole Barlow family with no regard to what this will do to them. Rob's mystified. She tells him he can't go through with it. She knows he lied about the night Tina died. He was gung ho to blame Peter because it suited his own purposes. He looks very uncomfortable. She shouts at him, he knows Peter didn't kill Tina and now she can prove it! I think Rob needs new underwear!

Tvor

Written by Debbie Oates and directed by Kay Patrick

Tonight's second episode jumps straight back into Carla confronting Rob about the night of the murder. She knows that either he or Tracy is lying about what happened that night. Carla starts to dial the number for the police so Rob grabs the phone off her. Right, Carla tells him, she'll announce it at the wedding. She goes to leave, whereupon Rob finally admits that he lied ...

Carla waits for him to tell her Tracy did it but instead Rob says she couldn't have. He tells Carla about Tracy making the delivery of knock-off goods. He's starting to get really worked up, trying to explain himself away and why he lied to the police. He says he couldn't risk telling the truth, not given his prison record and he couldn't drop Tracy in it. Besides, he says, the police got their murderer so why does it matter? "Peter is where he belongs and my Tracy is innocent," Rob tells his sister. Carla is lost for words and grabs hold of the bottle of Champagne.

Over the road in the Rovers the hen night is hotting up. They're playing Forfeits and Beth is murdering a Gloria Gaynor number on the Karaoke machine.

Back at Carla's flat she and Rob are now standing on the balcony drinking the Champagne. The mood has lightened and she's teasing him about the embarrassing stories she could put in her speech tomorrow. Carla also admits that she couldn't have got through this last year without Rob's support. But as she peers over the edge of the balcony Carla raises the subject of Tina again and Rob starts to gets angry. Why can't she just let the subject drop? Carla apologises and suggests they open another bottle. She promises not to talk about it any more although she can't help saying to Rob that he was an idiot to lie about Tracy's alibi. After all, she adds, if Tracy's alibi is false, it makes a right mess of his. Rob looks very awkward and suggests they go back inside.

Suddenly Rob flies off the handle and asks Carla if she's going to line up all the guests tomorrow and accuse them all of killing Tina. Carla looks shocked. "I didn't accuse you," she says. They stare at each other for a moment and then Rob leaves the flat.

We return to the hen do in the Rovers. Liz suggests to Michelle and Steve that they should have an early night and she'll finish up but Steve immediately makes an excuse that he has to go and tidy the cellar. Michelle and Liz exchange glances. Liz rings the bell for last orders then Ken comes in, looking for Tracy.

Out in the street we see Rob heading in the direction of a taxi but before he can get there, Tracy spots him and calls over to him. She jokes he's not supposed to see him and the other hens comes across and make them turn their backs on each other. "You know I love you, Trace," says Rob, a look of panic on his face. Tracy looks surprised. "Rob, we're all right, aren't we?" she asks, starting to worry about his behaviour. Beth assumes he's just drunk and instructs him to go home and drink lots of water.

Michelle has gone round to see Carla. As she pours out what I calculate to be about Carla's fifth bottle of the night, Michelle prattles on about Steve's strange behaviour. Meanwhile Carla is sitting and fiddling with the wedding rings. Michelle misunderstands something Carla says and for a moment she thinks Rob has been cheating on Tracy. "Has he confessed to something?" she asks. No, nothing like that, Carla tells her. Then Rob walks through the door. Michelle looks at him and tells him, straight out, she wants him to tell the truth and nothing but the truth. Rob looks shocked. "Are you going to turn up tomorrow and marry Tracy Barlow?" she asks. Rob almost smiles with relief as he guarantees he will. Michelle takes her leave but, as she goes, she tells Carla to make sure Rob keeps his promise, "else there'll be murder," she adds.

Rob pours himself a glass of wine as he starts babbling on about getting cold feet and apologises for walking out. Carla asks where he was. Rob replies he was just walking and getting some air. "The night Tina was murdered," says Carla. "Where were you?" The pieces are falling in to place. Rob knew that Carla didn't do it. "You're my sister," he explains. Carla says that anyone can do anything if the circumstances are right. She asks Rob to tell her outright that he's innocent. "I'm innocent, alright?" he replies, avoiding her gaze. She asks him to say it again and look her in the eyes. He does it but Carla tells Rob that she's known him all her life. She starts to run through all the details while Rob begins to get worked up. Carla finally knows and Rob knows she knows. Carla begs Rob to tell her the truth. "You killed her, didn't you?" she asks, almost sobbing. "Just tell me the truth. Just one word. It's me," she begs. "You did it, didn't you?" Rob lets out an almost inaudible "yes" as tears begin to roll down his face.

Rob is babbling way, trying to explain himself to Carla. He tells her Tina's fall was an accident. Carla points out that murders don't just happen. An emotional Rob tells her this rage just came over him. He tries to lay the blame on Peter and then says that Carla hated Peter. "Don't you dare make out you did this for me," she says in measured tones. Carla starts to get angry and emotional; she had every reason to want Tina dead but she screams it's something you say, not something you do. Carla goes to leave. She tells Rob she's going to the pub, she needs to talk to Michelle. But Rob doesn't want her going anywhere or talking to anyone. Carla is incredulous when she realises Rob wants to go through with the wedding tomorrow as though nothing's happened. To Carla's horror, Rob locks the front door and angrily pushes her down onto the sofa.

Tracy's back home with Beth and Sinead. The reason Ken came to find her is that Amy was trying on her bridesmaid's dress and managed to tear it. Tracy is not amused.

Back at Carla's flat Rob is now shouting at his sister. He's still blaming Peter and screams at her, asking how she could choose Peter over him. Carla reaches out and picks up a heavy-looking ornament. Now Rob looks confused. "You're scared of me?" he asks. Carla points out that he's locked her in and taken her phone. Rob gently lays the phone and keys on the table and asks what she thinks he'd do to her. He says he'd never hurt her. Rob tells Carla to go and tell Michelle and phone the police – he just wanted a chance to explain. A tearful Carla is lost for words; she looks at Rob and shakes her head.

Back at the Barlows Ken's examining the damage to Amy's dress. He reassures Tracy that no one will notice and she apologises for her earlier meltdown. She tells her Dad how lucky she is to have Rob. Ken replies that's all that matters, even if one or two little things go wrong at the wedding tomorrow. Tracy agrees – all she wants at the end of the day is to become Mrs Donovan. Ken tells Tracy that, for what it's worth, he thinks Rob is the lucky one.

We return to Carla and Rob. She give him her phone and says that if the call to the police comes from him, if he makes a confession, they might be more lenient. Rob replies that he'll be 60 years old by the time he comes out. He begs Carla not to do that to him. She reminds him Peter is innocent, he'll appeal, they'll find new evidence. What about the murder weapon? Rob tells her it's in the bottom of the canal. Rob gets emotional again. He says some nights when he's in bed, he's scared to turn round in case the face he sees isn't Tracy's but Tina's, lying there with her eyes open. "You don't know what this has done to me," says Rob. "What about Tina? And me?" asks Carla. Rob tries a new tack and says if Peter's let out he'll go back on the bottle and drink himself to death after six months while he rots. "What about Simon?" asks Carla. Rob says he wants a family of his own and if Carla turns him into the police his life is done. Carla tells Rob that she loves him but she can't look Simon and Ken in the eye. "But if I can do it ..." replies Rob. He says they only have to get through tomorrow. Then one day at a time. He swears that he'll be a better man and that he'll be a better dad than Peter could ever be. He begs her to do nothing and just let tomorrow happen.

Wednesday 29 October

A worried looking Rob is sitting on the sofa, wondering if he should bother to iron his wedding shirt. Carla, looking pale and drawn, doesn't answer him and takes her coffee to her bedroom.

At the Barlow's, Audrey is doing Tracy's hair, as Kylie gives her a manicure. Ken tells them that Simon's not coming and Tracy feels that's just as well, she doesn't want any miserable faces on her big day. She then has an 'almost human' moment (well, for Tracy anyway) and expresses her sadness that both Deirdre and Peter won't be present. She wavers - maybe she should have cancelled? Ever the philosopher, Ken tells her that they never know what's round the corner so if she has the chance of happiness she should grab it with both hands.

Just then Gail arrives, all chirpy and full of beans, and asks Ken if she can borrow his kimono. She explains that she's making Michael a Japanese meal and she thought it would help her look the part. As Ken goes to get it there's a knock on the door, it's Michelle with the flowers. She whips out a camera and takes a quick snap of Tracy with her hair in rollers, much to Tracy's annoyance. Michelle explains that it's just for her website, but Tracy retorts that today is about her not Michelle, so she can lose the camera. She then moans at Michelle for not bringing her a bottle of champagne or bucks fizz or something similar.

Back at Carla's, she still giving Rob the silent treatment and he still doesn't know whether he should get showered and changed for the wedding.

Norris is sitting outside his front door, and tells Katy, who is passing, that he's waiting for a delivery. Emily comes out and implores him to come indoors. At first he refuses but she tempts him saying she's cooked him devilled mushrooms on toast. He then asks Katy if she'll watch out for him for two minutes. She tells him she's on her way to work and can't be late. He tells her that with her family's reputation (?) he thought she would have jumped at the chance of doing a good turn. She then agrees to wait in his place.

Rob has got himself into his shirt and has found Carla's 'Best Bird's Speech' on a piece of paper. She comes into the room and he remarks that it's a good speech. He starts to read parts of it ….."we had nothing to our name but we always had each other....." "he's always been there for me, supported me, by my side no matter what......" She tells him she didn't know what he was when she wrote that. "You're not going to tell anyone are you?" he asks. She just tells him to get ready.

A delivery van drives away just as Norris comes back outside. Katy hands him a card. "Sorry we missed you." Norris is flabbergasted. Katy tells him the delivery driver was in a big hurry but insisted that Norris sign for the parcel personally. She says she knocked but he obviously didn't hear. He says he finds that hard to believe, he has the ears of a bat. She tells him he shouldn't slag off someone's family and if her dad were to hear what he'd said he'd wipe the floor with him.

Kylie arrives back home from doing Tracy's nails and asks David to fix her a butty. He opens the fridge and finds a whole lot of Japanese food. He's very scathing, especially as she seems to be spoiling Michael and he has to make do with Coco Dinosaurs for breakfast. She retorts that it would be nice for her and Michael to spend some quality time together.

Over at Tyrone's, Cilla says she's leaving today, she feels she's outstayed her welcome. Tyrone tells her she's welcome any time, and Fiz glares at him. Cilla says they make a lovely couple, these are the best days of their lives, they're young with the world at their feet. She then becomes quite philosophical saying it all goes by so quick, then they're old and knackered with the best times behind them. Fiz stares at her, puzzled.

In the back room of the Rovers, Michelle tells Liz that today had better go perfectly or she'll be for it with Tracy. She says that Steve has promised her a lift to the venue, and Liz informs her that Steve has gone out, she doesn't know where, but if he can't be found Tony will take her. Liz then notices Michelle's glum face, and Michelle confides that things are no better between her and Steve - he couldn't be less interested in her. Liz tells her that everyone goes through patches like that, she must give him some time.

Back at the Barlow's, Tracy has got her bottle of champers, her hair and make up are done, and Ken, Beth and Emily are toasting her. Emily then produces a cameo brooch and says she'd like Tracy to wear it as her 'something borrowed'. Tracy is less than impressed, but Ken says it's very kind of her. Beth then produces a blue garter for her 'something blue' and jokes that Rob can take it off later with his teeth. Emily makes a hasty departure.

Dressed in his morning suit, Rob is waiting outside Victoria Court. He sees the flower memorial to Tina and goes over to stare at it. Just then Carla comes out. He turns to her and says he's sorry, so sorry. She stops him and says they'd better get off, he shouldn't be late, but then she steps over and stares at the flowers too.

The beautiful white carriage and gray horses have arrived outside Tracy's door, with Kirk, Sinead, Sean, Beth and Mary waiting for her to come out. Eventually she appears, with Amy at her side. Sean tells her the dress is amazing. "I know," beams Tracy, "how gorgeous am I?" "And me!" pipes up Amy. Sinead is quick to say that they both look fantastic. Tracy, Ken and Amy get into the carriage and Ken tells her she looks radiant. She tells him it's because she's happy and it's all down to Rob.

Eileen is waiting with Michael in the hospital waiting room. He thanks her for coming with him. She tells him she's taking her life in her hands, if Gail finds out there will be trouble.

Sinead visits Cilla and urges her to tell Fiz and Chesney what is wrong with her before she leaves.

The wedding guests are milling around outside the wedding venue, and are given glasses of something sparkling by a waiter with a tray. Beth tells Sean she thinks he was giving Sean the eye. Emily is wondering if the brooch she lent Tracy was rather old fashioned. Norris is of the opinion she will never see it again.

A nervous Rob gives Carla the rings to produce later at the alter. Michelle calls everyone to go inside. As they start moving, Carla tells Rob she just needs some fresh air and will be in soon. He looks worried.

Fiz, Chesney, Sinead and Tyrone are having a goodbye lunch with Cilla in the cafe. The conversation is somewhat strained, and Cilla thinks they can't wait to see the back of her. There's an awkward silence and then Fiz mumbles about them being short of space.

The horses and carriage trot up the drive with Tracy, Ken and Amy on board. When she gets out, Michelle appears with a photographer and directs the proceedings. Ken quietly tells Carla that he can't help thinking that Peter should be with them. He says that people think he's delusional but he knows in his heart that Peter didn't do it. He says he doesn't know how Peter will survive in prison and tells her that Simon is struggling too. He will have to grow up without his father. Carla looks thoughtful.

The family escort Cilla to the bus stop. Sinead asks if she would like them to wait with her but she tells them there is no need. Fiz tells her to keep in touch, and then they all walk away.

Across the Street, Eileen and Michael get out of a taxi and hug briefly before going their separate ways, just as David and Kylie come round the corner and see them. Kylie wonders what all that is about and David says he's going to find out.

The wedding guests are seated and awaiting the arrival of the bride. Carla finally comes in and walks up to Rob. "Where have you been?" he asks, nervously. She stares at him looking sad. "Please tell me you haven't....?" says Rob. "I'm sorry," whispers Carla.

Friday 31 October

We open with Michelle getting Ken, Tracy and Amy ready to go into the ceremony. Amy realises she hasn't got her flowers. She thinks she must have left them in the carriage. So Michelle throws off her shoes and runs barefoot after the coach!

Meanwhile Rob is asking Carla what she has told the police.

With all this going on, the guests are waiting for something to happen!

Kylie and David are discussing having seen Michael kiss Eileen and whether to tell Gail. Kylie says they work together so it was probably a friendly kiss to a colleague..

Norris is wanting to slip away to collect his parcel. Although he says he doesn't know what it is.

Beth is trying to matchmake Sean with one of the waiters.

At the Platts, Gail and Michael are eating Japanese food with chopsticks. David and Kylie come in.

Back to Rob and Carla, and he accuses her of betraying him.

When Gail leaves the room, David and Kylie confront Michael about him and Eileen. He says that she is just a friend.

Michelle having run some distance comes back with the flowers in her hand.

Rob and Carla are talking at the back of the Registry Office. Rob tells her that he has decided that he is going to go on the run. Tracy is left confused. He tells her to ask Carla what it is all about. She tells Tracy that Rob killed Tina. Tracy accuses Carla of lying to save Peter's skin. Carla turns round and accuses Tracy of giving him an alibi for the night of the murder. Tracy and Carla have a bitter argument when the police arrive. ("Hello, hello, hello, what's going on here")!!

Fizz tells Chesney, Sinead and Tim that Cilla has gone.

The police tell Tracy that they want to ask her some questions. Beth comes in and offers to comfort Tracy. The police tell everybody to wait and not leave. Norris is concerned and wants to go to get his parcel.

Chesney says that he doesn't believe Cilla is ill. He says that she has lied before. Sinead says that she is certain that Cilla is speaking the truth.

Ken says he wants to tell Peter what has happened. Tracy is annoyed that her father cares more about Peter than her.

Fizz and Chesney race off to the bus stop, but Cilla isn't there.

Rita tells Emily that Rob killed Tina, but she believes that he was finishing off what Peter had started.

Liz asks Tony if he is concerned that if Tracy is asked who she was with that night. He says that he has every confidence that Tracy will keep her mouth shut.

The police wonder why Carla didn't contact them sooner. She confirms that he made a confession to her.

Gail is trying to get David and Kylie out of the house, Michael tells Gail about Eileen. Gail is annoyed that he took Eileen to the hospital rather than herself.

The waiter comes over to Sean and Kirk. He gives Kirk his telephone number, much to Sean's annoyance.

Gail and Michael are arguing. She wants to know the outcome of his tests. He tells her that they were positive.

Mary has taken Amy away to Roy's for a milkshake. She suggests that they go to Roy's for a milkshake and then onto Dev's to watch a DVD, have a hot dog and some popcorn. Amy is concerned that she maybe responsible for the marriage not going ahead. She explains that she left her flowers in the carriage. Mary assures Amy that it is nothing to do with her.

Ken and Tracy are sitting on the steps of the hotel. The police want to ask Tracy some questions, inside. She says she won't go so they arrest her for perverting the course of justice.

So will what happens next? Will Tracy be thrown in the slammer? Will the police believe Carla, after all they have a convicted murderer in jail. My friend Richard will be along shortly to continue this story, and you will have me back for next Friday's episode.

Martin Rosen

This episode was delivered at the end of the half term holiday week here in the UK and we spent one day with one of our grandchildren and a daughter visiting the Harry Potter studios near Watford and we made two trips to London for visits to the theatres and partaking of a meal. So it was a busy week. And it has been busy over in Weatherfield where we have been enduring the wedding of the year(!).

This episode was written by Carmel Morgan and directed by Kay Patrick on behalf of ITV Studios which retains all copyright and to whom many thanks.

We are of course still at the wedding of the year, which in fact is not a wedding and Tracy is being taken away in handcuffs about which Ken is protesting loudly. The entire panoply of guests are watching including Carla and Michelle. Beth wants to know why she is being arrested and says to Trace that she needs to think of the compo she will get she sues them. Ken talks to Tracy and tells that it is self-preservation time, she is a mother with responsibilities and she cannot put her neck (or Peter's neck) to save Rob's. She just wants Rob. Ken sympathises but he tells her to be truthful, straight and above all courteous [Tracy - courteous?]. She nods her assent and crying the car door is closed and she goes. Tim suggests they should have written "Just arrested" on the back of the police car in shaving foam and gets a dig in the ribs from Sal for his pains.

Back at the Platt residence there is relief and worry. Michael is confirmed as having a poor heart - technically Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (and I am grateful to the sub titling team at ITV for providing spellings of both of those as it is beyond me!). As Michael observes "Try saying that without your teeth in". The letter had upset him he explains and so when Eileen offered to accompany him - well. Gail says sorry about her outburst. David said it looked like ... well sticks and wrong end of come to mind. Michael is on medication to help.

At a convenient interview room they are questioning Tracy. They ask about her giving a false alibi for Rob for the night of Tina's murder. Tracy bites back - but the officer wants to know if she was with Rob, before, during and after the engagement party. Tracy gives no ground - it is the truth. The officer said she should think again and reminds her of Ken's advice - but rejoins Tracy that is because he is desperate to get Peter out of prison and Rob is the perfect scapegoat. The officer says she knows Tracy is lying. Tracy then lashes out at Carla saying she wants Peter out of the toy cupboard so that they can drink themselves to death. The officer suggests that Rob doing a bunk proves his guilt as an innocent man would have stood his ground. The officer adds that via Carla they know where the murder weapon was lost and the search is underway. She maintains the previous story that they were together. The officer presses her again but she clams up. The officer observes that at least she is getting her value for money from her dress!

Ken and Carla are waiting outside the police station. Carla has just given her statement - she feels a very bad sister. She makes it clear that she has reverted to Connor and she had never got used to Barlow anyway. Ken says she has done the right thing. Carla however has condemned her brother to free the lying, cheating specimen she married. Ken agrees that Peter is that and worse - but he is not a murderer and he genuinely thanks her. Ken has been trying to get the news to Peter and is awaiting a call. At the moment he is more worried about Tracy. Carla departs.

In the Rovers Rita is recalling with Emily that it explains why Rob was so kind to Tina's mother. Emily observes that Ken must be torn - thrilled for Peter and heartbroken for Tracy. Rita reckons Tracy has had a lucky escape! Michelle is desperately trying to get out of some of the liabilities for the wedding - but not having much luck. Liz thanks Dev for taking care of Amy - but in fact he isn't - it is Mary who is going good - playing hair salons. He asks after Steve - allegedly he is doing the books in the back but mentally he is on Planet Steve. Liz passes it off as concern for Peter. Liz admits she thought Peter was guilty. In a quiet corner Tony tells Liz that he had no idea Tracy had given Rob a false alibi. She is more interested in knowing what Tony will be telling the police. He tells her there is nothing to worry about, but she is not convinced.

At Roy's Rolls Sinead, Ches, Fiz and Ty discuss Cilla's revelation. Both Fiz and Ches fell pretty bad about things. Sinead says she have spoken up sooner but there is no agreement on that. And they have no address to track her down in Wolverhampton. Fiz starts to worry about Cilla being ill and fragile. Sinead gets up and says she will be back later.

Peter wants to know what is so urgent when he gets hold of Ken on the phone. Ken says that Simon is fine but that Rob killed Tina,; he told Carla and is now on the run. Peter reacts with visible relief [he knows he will soon have easy access to alcohol] but says nothing. Ken confirms that Carla has signed a statement. Peter says that even so nothing is proven. Ken agrees to tell Simon the news. Peter asks if Tracy knew. Ken assures him that she did not have an inkling. "This is the best of times for you and the worst of times for her" Ken paraphrases Dickens. And he is sure a lot of people will be apologising to Peter. Peter is more focused on Carla throwing him a lifeline - he obviously hopes that they can reconcile.

Back inside the police station the questioning continues - of the first bride ever interviewed. The officer is pressing her to tell the truth - does she want to be banged up for perverting the course of justice, as a jailbird she can obviously manage being in the Big House. Tracy suggests that Carla be given a lie detector test, she continues to say that Rob was with her. The officer turns the screws - when they have Rob and the murder weapon the defense team will tell him to plead guilty and leave Tracy to be hung out to dry. And this time Amy will know for sure that her mother lied and will inevitably suffer for her mother's crimes. Tracy finally admits that she was not covering for Rob. He was covering for her. The detective is intrigued. She admits she was moving some goods for the shop ... which might have fallen off the back of a lorry. But Rob insists on the shop stock being kosher. So whilst she was otherwise occupied Rob had time to attack and kill Tina. She still does not believe he killed Tina - but no longer does she say he was with her throughout the evening. The officer knows now that she has a motive, an opportunity and soon will have the murder weapon - more than enough to convict Rob as the alibi has gone.

After the break we find Rob has found haven in a B&B with a pretty draconian set of rules. And a wisecracking door man.

Carla and Michelle are discussing Rob and Carla is almost wishing that Peter had done it rather than Rob. But Carla says she could not do nothing.

In the back room of the Rovers Steve is looking at the books and Liz why he came in the back. Steve says he just wanted to avoid the bar and the small talk. Steve tells his mother that every morning he wakes up and he makes one bad decision after another - well apart from being with Michelle. Liz says he needs to show Michelle some tlc. Steve seems to ignore her and tries to concentrate on the books. Liz leaves.

Gail has brought Audrey up to date. David and Kylie are looking up the medical problem online and possible treatments - which include a heart transplant. Michael admits he knew of the possibility but did not want to cause alarm. Gail suggests that Michael should again try to contact Gavin, his son - because he needs to know. Kylie reckons he could be found quickly and it would be something positive to focus on. Michael says to try.

Sinead returns home - with the bad penny behind her. It turns out Sinead lied to get Cilla to return - Ches has not fallen off a ladder. Fiz tells Cilla they know about her problem and she knows that Sinead has let t' cat owt ' bag. Sinead is not sorry however. Fiz is glad she knows and is comforting - but Ches is not yet won over.

Ken brings Tracy home. Tony spots her and wants to know the score - she has been released on bail and he asks Tracy to contact him if she needs to. Tony gets nothing out of her. Tracy has lost Rob, she has lost everything. She breaks down crying.

Cilla is suffering a bit with pain. Fiz wants to know what will happen - and Cilla jokes about it before telling them about the longer term prognosis. They say she is staying.

In the Rovers Beth and Liz discuss getting Michelle to transfer the unused cake to her wedding but Liz advises she does not ask for a day or so! Steve appears and says he is going to check on Amy, whilst Liz tells Tony he better have a good story for when the cops come round.

David has found that Michael Rodwell lived in London until 2006 but since then there is nothing - he must be working for MI5. Lost without trace. Michael reckons that he might be dead. David reckons that it is impossible to vanish these days. Gail assures Michael that David and Nick will find his son and he will not be on his own.

Tracy phones Rob but he refuses to take the call.

In prison Peter finds a picture of Carla in a book and pulls it out to look at his saviour.

No extra comments this week as I am still running late.

See you soon.
