Monday 2 March

Written by Julie Jones Directed by Duncan Foster

Gail has decided on her wedding dress. Understated she says. Michael has woes, doesn't think he looks good in a suit and feels like he's in trouble when he wears one! Audrey harkened back to her Alfeh, who wore a suit every day and a trilby hat! Max decides he doesn't want to go to the wedding. Michael distracts him by racing him up to the bathroom.

Tracy is moaning to Beth about Liz banning her but she hasn't told her what's it all about. Tracy pretends it's just down to jealousy. Tracy spies Tony down the road and tries to fob Beth off but Beth wants to buy one of those scent diffusers for her cousin whose husband works in an abattoir, coming home every night "smelling of death". She finally gets Beth to leave and gives Tony a piece of her mind. He rightly points out that she knew Liz would kick off at the box of stolen goods and Tracy did push the envelope. They go into the shop as he asks why she didn't tell on him. She reckons she's not done with him yet. He suggests they "meet up later" in that case but she's cagey.

Anna chats to Faye about a school trip but Faye doesn't want to go. She's also showing signs of a cold and Anna determines that she seems to be running a bit of a fever. She's going to make a doctor's appointment. Faye runs out and away from Anna fussing and the potential of a probing doctor.

Maddie tells Sophie she dreamed of Annie Lennox. It wasn't much of a dream, actually. The girls notice Jenny's jacket still laying over the sofa. Hmmm. Overnight visitor, it seems. Sophie doesn't seem best pleased. Kevin and Jenny come in, he warning Sophie "not a word!" and offering Jenny breakfast.

Faye and Craig are waiting at the bus stop. They both say they didn't sleep well after viewing the video. He thinks she's in denial and pretending it's not happening. Anna runs across the road with her forgotten butties but, after taking one look, can tell Faye is feeling worse and insists on taking her to the doctor later.

Ga'Andy and Gail are in the Kabin. Ga'Andy is going with Michael to pick out a suit. Gail charges him with the duty of taking care of Michael and helping him to pick out something stylish. Steph pops in as Ga'Andy leaves. Rita makes an admiring comment about the young man. Steph teases her and warns her off, he's "mine" she laughs. Gail and Rita chat about the wedding plans and all there is to do. Steph offers to help and Gail gratefully hands her a list and some money. Steph pays for her magazines and goes off. Norris asks if she's changing her name and Gail affirms she is. Norris gives them a brief history of his own marriage disasters. Myrtle was first, seducing him with her milk puddings. He should have seen this as a sign that she was insipid and boring. He recalls she bought him gray trousers, shirt and jacket one year. He felt like a walking shadow. Then there was Hurricane Angela. He advises Gail to stay single.

Michael makes Ga'Andy promise not to do anything daft on the stag night. Ga'Andy promises. No strippers, either! He worries for his heart! Steph offers a Nana-gram. They just talk about the war and make cups of tea! Ga'Andy chivvies Michael along. They're meeting David in town. Michael nips to the look and Ga'Andy goes over Gail's list that Steph has. Steph mentions that she forgets that Ga'Andy really isn't Michael's son. He admits he's grown quite fond of Michael and he feels like he belongs. (Remember, he too had a difficult relationship with his own father).

Tyrone and Kevin are in the cafe. Tyrone wants all the gossip about Jenny. Kevin can't complain. Tyrone chuckles. Roy brings over their order and asks Tyrone if he's very busy today because he was hoping for a driving lesson. As he doesn't seem to be, Tyrone is quite happy to do it. He sets a time for 5 p.m. (rush hour. Not really conducive to an already nervous beginner, is it?) Gary suggest Roy take up one of the driving video games for practice. Roy attempts to go along with the joke as best he can.

David tries to get Max to hurry as they're late. Max really doesn't want to go. There's a knock on the door and Max lets Callum in. Callum has several bags of new clothes. Max proclaims them very cool but David won't let him keep the clothes. They argue in front of Max but Callum pops a baseball cap on Max's head before he leaves. Max runs upstairs shouting that he hates David. Callum seems to consider that a result.

Faye is at the doctor's office. The doctor has diagnosed a bit of a viral infection and will prescribe paracetemol. Faye does her best to get out of the office but not before Anna speaks up and mentions that she is concerned that Faye isn't eating properly. Faye is mortified and runs out the door. Anna discusses it with the doctor, thinking it could just be typical of most girls her age and the doctor, at least from sight, doesn't think Faye's weight seems out of the normal range. I guess the baggy clothes are fooling everyone!

Maddie and Sophie are in the Kabin where Norris wonders why, of all the men in all the world, Jenny had to walk into Kevin's life. Sophie defensively asks why it's such a problem? Norris backtracks, saying Kevin is a nice enough bloke but he's not exactly full of witty repartee. Sophie takes offence but Rita adds that Jenny is always out for what she can get. Rita worries that Jenny is after Kevin's money. Sophie knows he doesn't have a lot. Rita hopes Jenny will leave when she finds out (but of course, we saw that conversation already, Kevin already told Jenny she's not getting owt off him). Maddie tells them that Jenny stayed over last night. Rita predicts it will end in tears.

Anna approaches Faye outside the clinic. She accuses Anna of making a big deal out of everything. Anna only wants to help, and tells her she's her treasure. She wants her to be happy and healthy and Faye needs to talk to her if anything's bothering her. Anna recalls Faye when she first came, feisty as all get out. She makes sure Faye understands that she's not on her own anymore. Faye glances across the road and clocks Craig coming along. Craig is happy to see her and Anna hug, thinking the truth has come out and goes across to them, saying he's glad it's all sorted. Faye stops him and protests that he doesn't know what he's talking about. She's been diagnosed with a virus, that's all! She takes off like a shot, telling Anna she's going to stay at Tim's tonight. Anna calls after her but it's useless. Craig leaves Anna there as well.

In Barlows', Beth is haggling over the price of the scent diffuser when Liz comes in to see Tony, all smiles and good cheer. She's brought him a hot chocolate. Tracy tells Liz she's barred from the shop. Liz magnanimously offers to life the pub ban if Tracy apologizes. Pigs flew past the window just then, did you see them? Tracy tells her she's got a long wait. She invites Beth to the Bistro where things are much more their speed, good drinks and decent food rather than hotpot with gristly meat. That sends Liz into a frenzy. You do NOT dis Betty's Hotpot! Tony pulls her back from attacking Tracy and leads her out, leaving Tracy giggling.

Faye is installed on Sally's sofa and allows Sally to fuss over her. Sally persuades Faye to take a mug of hot lemon and honey, like it or not. It's good for her! There's a knock on the door. Craig has come to see Faye. Sally reluctantly allows it, warning him that Faye is likely contagious. Sally goes upstairs for a minute, just long enough for Fay to give Craig a scolding and him to put that down to her hormones. He gets one of Sally's cushions upside the head for his troubles and Sally catches that and scolds the pair of them. Sally offers them a drink but Faye rudely makes him leave.

Liz is in the Kabin now. Norris doesn't get any more gossip out of her than a mention that Tracy is being her usual gobby self. Jenny comes through the door. Liz says hi but goes anyway. Jenny asks for a few minutes of Rita's time. Norris objects but is sent home and Rita tells Jenny she can have five minutes. Once he's out of the door, the women turn to each other.

Gail pops in to the cafe to pick up some cakes she's ordered. She sees Callum in the corner with his shopping bags. Callum says he has to take them all back thanks to David. Before she can pursue that line of conversation, Steph runs in with Gail's shopping from her list, and hands over the change. She mentions she has to go to Gavin's flat to take delivery of the wedding present. They leave. We see Roy sitting, ready and waiting for Tyrone. Why he waits, he and Gary talk about the organic veg supplier for the cafe who's left town. What will they do to replace their supply? Roy will endeavour to replace, wanting to use someone local.

Jenny hands Rita an envelope. It's part of what she owes Rita. She wants Rita to realize she's genuinely sorry for what she did all those years ago. Rita wonders where she got 300 pounds if she doesn't have much money as she'd said. Jenny won't tell her, but assures her she didn't get it off Kevin. Rita cooly says she owes her noting. The money was to make her go away and she tells her again. Go away and leave her alone. Jenny doesn't take the envelope back so Rita tears it up and turns her back. Jenny leaves but Rita looks troubled.

Max comes downstairs still wearing his hat along with his wedding suit. Gail, Audrey and Michael tease him, declaring he can't wear the hat on the big day but he insists he can, Callum bought it! Max doesn't like the suit, either. David scolds him for taking his upset out on everyone else. Things fall apart and the lad and David argue, with Max tossing the hurtful "I want my real dad" out. Ouch.

Steph lets herself in to the flat and hears music. A man comes out of the bedroom and asks who she is and why does she have a key to "his" flat.

His flat????

Tvor

Written by Debbie Oates and directed by Duncan Foster

Steph is in shock at the sight of the man in the flat. She stutters that she's Andy's girlfriend. He introduces himself as Gavin, as if she didn't know. He clearly likes the look of his mate's girlfriend and insists she stays for a cup of tea.

David suddenly seems to have lost his parenting skills. Max is refusing to take off the hat that Callum gave him. Gail steps in as the voice of reason, gently explaining to Max that whatever anybody else says, David is his real Dad because he's done everything for him while he's been growing up. David does a poor impression of a good Dad, petulantly telling Max that Callum only gives him stuff. Max says he likes stuff and he hates David.

Ty is taking Roy off for a driving lesson. They're going to combine it with an outing to visit some organic farm shops to supply the cafe. Sharif and Michelle watch in amusement as the Woody lurches its way up Coronation Street.

Across the street, Beth is trying to pull out of a night out with Tracy. Tracy may have been barred from the Rovers but the Bistro isn't out of bounds and she insists Beth is coming with her, whether she likes it or not.

Steph is like a cat on a hot tin roof as Gavin tries to regale her with stories of his time in Thailand. He mentions he lost his phone which means of course that he didn't get any of Andy's messages. While all this is going on, Steph spots a couple of payslips on the table addressed to Gavin Rodwell and hastily stuffs them in her pocket. She says she has to get back to work. She hurries out of the door before Gavin has a chance to tell her there's a package there for Andy.

Round at Sally's, Tim is wondering what's up with Faye. Perhaps Craig is her boyfriend? Sally says there's only one way to find out – talk to her. She sends a very reluctant Tim upstairs to have a word but at that moment Faye comes down. Tim asks Faye what was wrong with her boyfriend ‘mardy-pants'. Faye declares he's not her boyfriend and stomps back upstairs.

Katy is discussing arrangements for later. She's going to meet her mother in the Rovers but Izzy's not going. Owen casually suggests he and Anna should go too. He thinks the more they all get on, the better and that Linda is the best way to get through to Izzy. Anna decides that in that case she'd better go to the pub too.

Steph's back in the Bistro. She's desperate for a word with ‘Gavin' but he's too busy talking to Leanne about Gail's suggestion that he and Nick should do their wedding speeches as a rap. Before Steph can talk to ‘Gavin', Gail and Michael arrive. She finally catches up with ‘Gavin' in the store room and manages to blurt out that Gavin is back. As in the real Gavin.

Tim admits to Sally and Sophie he can't talk to Faye – what if her problem is ‘something girly'? He decides the answer is to give her a box of chocolates – they always seem to work when Sally's in a mood. Sally tells Tim what she needs right now is a parent. Good idea, says Tim, and goes off to find Anna.

Steph and Andy are in the storeroom in the Bistro, desperately discussing the Gavin situation. What are they going to do? Steph hopes that Gavin won't suspect anything and will just think Andy has a nutty girlfriend. At least she managed to hide the payslips she tells him. Gavin will kill him if he finds out, says Andy, and it will kill Michael if he finds out. It's a total disaster.

Sophie goes into the Kabin where she notices Rita has been crying. Rita tries to pretend everything's fine but then admits that she's upset with herself for allowing Jenny Bradley to get to her. Sophie tells her it's not surprising because Jenny hurt her and she'll probably end up hurting her dad as well. Sophie says of all the women Kevin had to go and pick her. Rita suggests that maybe she picked him and says that Sophie would do well to keep an eye on her. Sophie decides what Rita needs is a trip to the pub and she'll get Norris to lock up.

Ty and Roy arrive back from the driving lesson as Sharif walks past. Ty's behind the wheel. He explains to Sharif that it was getting dark and his nerves couldn't take any more. Sharif asks if they found any farm shops but it seems that wasn't much of a success either. Ty suggests Roy should get an allotment and grow his own stuff. Sharif says he might look into it. In that case, says Roy, he'll look into it too. Sharif says perhaps he'll look into it first ….

Sophie's doing a good job of cheering Rita up with a drink in the Rovers.

Katy comes in, followed by Owen and Anna. She's annoyed that they're gate-crashing the meeting with her mother. She stomps off saying she's going to cancel. Then Owen has a go at Anna for not backing him up by insisting that Katy stayed. Anna goes over to the bar where she's joined by Tim. She pours out her frustrations leaving him no chance to get a word in edgeways. When she finally asks about Faye he tells her he's on top of it and says that Sally told him to stop fussing over Faye and to go out for a drink.

David comes downstairs. He had to wait until Max was asleep until he could get the hat off him. he's upset and angry about Callum. he's damned if he does let Max see him and he's damned if he doesn't. What can he do? Michael tries gently suggesting that he might reach a compromise by letting Max see him just occasionally. This presses all the wrong buttons with David who angrily tells Michael to get out of his house.

Beth and Tracy are having their drink in the Bistro but while Beth chats away Tracy seems totally distracted. She tells Beth she's not in the mood and might call it a night. This doesn't go down well with Beth who only went out with Tracy because she insisted. But Tracy changes her mind when she receives a text from Tony. "Missing me?" it asks. Tracy's mood lifts and she decides to stay for another drink after all.

Michael's over by the bar telling Andy about what happened with David which leads him on to talk about their relationship. Unlike Callum turning up in Max's life, at least with him and Andy they're adults, says Michael. Andy seems very on edge but he mutters that none of what happened in the past or how they got together matters, it's how they get on now that's important. Steph interrupts and drags Andy off for another word. Andy hates himself for what's happened and lying to Michael but Steph says that before he tells anybody anything he's going to have to face Gavin first.

David is slumped on the sofa looking miserable. Gail comes downstairs and has a go at him for the way he spoke to Michael. She tells David Michael isn't on Callum's side, he was only trying to help and he doesn't deserve to be thrown out of the house. What's she supposed to do? Sneak him in the back door when David's not looking? Gail asks David if he's sorry. Yes, he's sorry Michael couldn't come up with a better solution. And nor can he, adds David. Gail tells David that he must see he's just making things worse for himself. But David says if he just gives in and does what Callum wants …. Gail tells David if he's the one calling the shots and the one who's explaining things to Max then Callum can't go around doing what he wants. In other words, do things his way. David tells Gail he hates all of this but what else can he do? He admits he'll just have to roll over and let Callum have his time with Max.

Wednesday 4 March

It's morning in the Rovers, and Anna is cleaning and talking to Liz and Michelle about the forthcoming school trip to France for Faye. Anna says they don't really have the money, but she'd really like her to go. They're going to a meeting at school about it later. The conversation then turns to Linda, Anna reckons every time she turns round, there she is. Michelle points out that Linda is Katy and Izzy's mum, but Anna wishes she'd go back to Portugal.

Katy, meanwhile, is asking Steph if she has plans to out this evening, she wants to invite Callum round for dinner. Steph is derisive about Callum, but Katy can't see what the problem is, she thinks he's a really decent bloke. (!) Steph eventually agrees to make herself scarce later.

When Katy has gone out, Steph and Andy talk about Gavin. Andy thinks he should deal with him by himself, but Steph won't hear of it.

Alya goes into the community centre and sees Roy there, preparing the lunch for later. Just then Sharif comes in and Roy breaks the news to him that there is only one space available at the allotments. Sharif says he's been told the same thing, and is being interviewed for it straight after Roy. "May the best man win!" he says, laughing. Roy doesn't look so happy.

Outside the front of the Rovers, Linda asks Katy and Izzy if they can have a get together later. Katy says she has plans, but just then Callum walks up and hears this, and wants to know what she's doing. She tells him she was going to ask him round to her place, but he says he can't keep her all to himself and urges her to go and enjoy a night with her mum and her sister.

Across the Street, David runs into his mum and Michael and tells them that Max threw a big tantrum on the way to school. "Three guesses as to why," he says, looking across at Callum. David then walks over and tells Callum that he's decided that he can spend time with Max, and tells him to be outside the house at 4.30.

Craig sees Faye walking down the school corridor and asks if she's going to the meeting about France tonight. She says she is, but she doesn't want to.

Roy is up in his flat, surrounded by gardening books. He tells Tyrone that he's preparing for a 'high stakes game of horticultural mastermind', and explains how he and Sharif are in competition for the allotment. A kind of gardener's high noon without the firearms.

Steph and Andy have arrived at Gavin's flat. He's scathing and sarcastic, and then says he wants to talk to Andy. He holds up a payslip. "When exactly did I start working at Nick's Bistro?" he asks. He holds up Michael's first letter. "Have you been opening my mail?"

Audrey goes into the pub and is served by Eileen. She asks for a gin and tonic but Eileen warns her that she shouldn't be drinking if she's going to be doing customers' hair. Audrey changes her order to an orange juice, much to Michelle's annoyance. Audrey has a paperback book with her, a romance novel. Eileen then decides it's time for a break and goes off out the back, leaving Michelle even more annoyed. Ken comes in and sees Audrey's book and suggests that he provides her with something a little more challenging to read – in fact he insists. "Oh that would be lovely," says Audrey, but she doesn't sound very convincing. He tells her he'll pop round to the salon later.

Michelle takes Liz to one side and says she's had enough of Eileen. "She's got to go," she says. Liz says she's not going to tell her, Michelle will have to do it.

Back at Gavin's flat, he's discovering that Andy has been pretending to be him for months.

"I think you'd better tell me what's been going on here."

Andy tries to tell a disbelieving Gavin how he tried to get hold of him, called him and left lots of voicemails, but he's heard how he'd lost his phone. Then, he started to get to know Michael.... "Don't tell me you actually feel sorry for him?" scoffs Gavin, and tells them Michael is a waster, always has been. Steph protests that Gavin doesn't even know Michael, but Gavin reminds her that Michael left him and his mum high and dry. Andy tells him that Michael isn't well, he has a heart problem and Gavin could have it too, he needs to get checked. Gavin doesn't appear to take that on board, he just reckons that Michael could be worth a few quid and Andy and Steph are knee deep in fraud. He thinks he'll pay Michael a visit and see for himself. "Where does he live?" he asks. Andy shakes his head, he's not saying. Gavin tells them to leave, he wants to think about it all.

Michelle finds Steve in the cafe. "It's Eileen," she says, sitting down. "We've got to get rid of her." "Bit extreme isn't it?" asks Steve. Michelle says he knows what she means. Steve reckons she's not that bad. Michelle says she's worse than bad, she has to go and Steve has to tell her. "You're scared of her," says Steve, and Michelle admits that she is. Steve admits that he is scared of Eileen too! He doesn't want to be the one to tell her, but Michelle says they won't have a business left by the end of the week. Steve finally says he'll play Michelle 'rock, paper, scissors' for the honour of telling Eileen. So they play, and Michelle loses, so she goes off saying that when she tells her, Steve had better be there to back her up. "Do I have to?" he asks. "Yes you do!" she snaps.

Anna and Owen have arrived at the school for the meeting about France, and sit down next to Jackson and his parents.

Callum arrives outside David's house to pick Max up. David tells him he doesn't want Callum to mess Max about, he's 8 years old and his mum has gone missing.

Back at the school, Faye comes into the meeting hall and sits down with Anna and Owen, next to Jackson, who looks very uncomfortable. After a few moments, Faye jumps up, telling Anna and Owen that she's left something in the library, and rushes out.

Audrey is just finishing at the salon when, much to her dismay, Ken arrives with a huge book – Anna Karenina. "It's an incredible piece of literature," he tells her. She thanks him somewhat half-heartedly.

Craig finds Faye in a corridor. She tells him she wants to go home. Just then Owen comes out to find her, and she tells him she doesn't want to go to France. He urges her to come back into the hall. "Can't you drag yourself away from Craig for a few minutes? I'm starting to wonder about you two," he says. Faye is distraught. "Why do you think you're so funny when you're not?" she shouts, and runs off, telling him to leave her alone.

Andy and Steph are now in the cafe. He gets a text message from Michael telling him he's in the Rovers. Steph says Andy must tell Michael the truth before Gavin does, it's going to be better coming from him. "Not in a busy pub though," says Andy.

At another table, Tyrone is quizzing Roy on vegetable gardening. Sharif comes in with Alya and says he can see he'll have to be on his toes when they're interviewed. Alya wonders if space can't be found for both of them, but Roy is adamant there is only one allotment vacant.

Izzy, Katy and Linda are walking down the Street when they meet Owen. To Izzy's annoyance he stops to talk about the days when the girls were young and says he still has the photos. He invites them all up to the flat to see them. Linda thinks that sounds good, but Izzy says she's tired and has to go home.

Michael is at the bar in the Rovers, buying the drinks. Eileen questions the wisdom of him drinking, as Steve, Liz and Michelle look on. Then Steve urges Michelle to go and speak to Eileen, so, reluctantly, she does, however, after a hesitating start nerve fails her and all she can manage is to ask Eileen to go and fetch a crate of lemonade from the cellar.

Andy and Steph arrive at the Rovers and ask Gail and Michael if they'd like to come back to Steph's to watch a film with them. Just then Gavin walks in behind them.

Owen is showing Linda and Katy the old photos when Anna comes out from the bedroom, saying that Faye is tired. Owen is sure she'll be ok in the morning, and carries on showing the photos. Anna gets cross and snaps that Owen is just sweeping it under the carpet while he takes a nice trip down memory lane. Linda thinks it's time she went, and leaves hurriedly.

Steph and Andy are having a conversation with Gavin in hushed tones. Gavin is disgusted to find Michael in the pub, proving that he's a waster. He then asks Andy how much it's worth to keep quiet, and then asks for £5,000. He says that he'll keep the secret safe and go back to Thailand for good. Just then Michael comes over. "Sorry to interrupt, but the good lady is desperate for some crisps," he says. Then he holds out his hand to shake Gavin's. "Michael, Gavin's dad," he says. The real Gavin just stares at him and then says to Andy, "Think about it," and leaves.

Anne Logan.

Friday 6 March

Hello, and off we go with the first Friday episode.

Gail and Michael do the dishes and hear David get up. Gail comments that it won't be easy for him having to trust Callum with Max on his own.

Gavandy (I'll call him that so we don't get muddled up with the real Gavin) and Steph discuss where they can get the money from to keep Gavin quiet. The answer is: Nowhere. Katy comes out of her room, closely followed by Callum, which is a shock to the others. Steph stupidly asks why he's there. Callum says she know why and tells a disappointed Katy he has to go. "All those deals to make," says Steph. Katy tells her to shut up. Once they're alone again, Steph and Gavandy agree they'll just have to tell Gavin they can't get the money.

Things are tense as Anna and Owen discuss Fay. Owen thinks she's just having a teenage strop but Anna thinks there's more to it. She knows Fay is worried about her weight, for one thing. Owen tries to brush that off - all girls are worried about their weight. Before you know it, they're shouting at each other again and Owen storms out, saying he has to concentrate on his own girls.

There is hammering on the door of the pub, which isn't open yet. It's Gail, just come to see how they're getting on with the preparations. She has to remind Liz, Michelle and Eileen that it's her hen party tonight. Michelle promises to put up some balloons and Gail produces a huge, tacky picture of herself and Michael which she wants on display.

Steph and Gavandy go to see Gavin and explain they just don't have that sort of money. "Then borrow it!" he snaps. Gavandy can't understand what's happened to Gavin. He never used to be this sort of person. Gavin's not interested in discussing it. He wants the money. He refuses to give them more time. In fact, if they don't get it, he still wins. Either he gets to live the way he wants (very cheaply if all he's after is five thousand pounds!) or he gets to tell his lousy father exactly what he thinks of him.

Anna leans on her broom outside the cafe and Liz stops to ask after Fay. Sally comes past and tells them she's just off to a power lunch. They admire her briefcase, a necessary accessory for the high-powered executive. As Sally struts away, Anna asks if there's any thing in the briefcase or whether it's just for show. Sally's furious and stomps off.

Steve's been to a therapy session. Lloyd doesn't really know what to say. They're interrupted by Michael coming in to remind them of his stag do. Steve and Lloyd had both forgotten. Lloyd realises just how awful it's going to be when Steven mentions he can't drink while taking his anti-depressants and Michael can't drink because of his heart condition.

In the cafe, Tyrone learns of Roy's appointment tonight at the house of the chair of the allotment association. He says Jack had an allotment but only so he could get away from Vera. He offers to take Roy there but Sharif says he might as well give Roy a lift since he's going as well. Tyrone is a bit suspicious of this but Roy thinks it's a very kind offer.

Things are all apologetic between Anna and Owen and they agree to go out, just the two of them.

In the bistro, Steph and Gavandy snipe at each other. Nick takes a phone call from someone called Morgan, who turns out to be the invisible chef. He's even more invisible tonight because he's ill. Nick was just off to do the banking but he'll have to stay and ring round the agencies to find a replacement. Can Gavandy do the banking for him? Can you see where this is going? Steph's got a pretty good idea.

Steph tries to convince Gavandy not to do what we all think he's going to do. He says he'll tell Nick he was mugged. Nick can claim it back on his insurance and nobody will know. "Except us, and I don't think I can live with that," says Steph.

Max waits at the window while David hopes Callum's been killed by a rival dealer. Callum arrives, to Max's delight, and David lays out the rules: Have him back by quarter past seven and no sweets, "They make him hyper."

Ken drops into the salon to see how Audrey is getting on with Anna Karenina. Emily comments that she loved it. Maria does everything she can to try and embarrass Audrey. Ken hopes to discuss it more fully when Audrey has a moment. She says she can't wait.

Roy waits outside the cafe. Tyrone sees him and tells him Sharif was trying to pull a fast one - Tyrone saw him drive off 20 minutes ago. Realising that this is an example of devious, underhand tactics, Roy accepts Tyrone's offer of a lift.

Michael's ready to kick off his stag do but Gavandy's not back. Nick isn't sure what's keeping him - he sent him to the bank. Steph phones Gavandy. Michael asks he to come over for a drink. Lloyd toasts Michael and Gail.

Sharif pulls up outside the cafe and knocks on the door. There's no reply and the cafe is closed. He looks puzzled.

Gail's hen party has begun. There's Gail, Maria, Sally and Audrey. They discuss Audrey's book. Audrey protests that she does read - just not books this long or with so many Russian names. She's already lost track of who is who. Eileen comes over and wishes Gail luck, but only so she can mention that this will be Gail's fifth wedding. Audrey points out it's the sixth, because Brian came back for more. Gail comments that at least she's been married. Eileen describes herself as more picky than Gail. Michelle breaks up what is promising to be a fight by getting Eileen back behind the bar.

Max is home with an enormous teddy bear which Callum won for him at the fair. To annoy David, Callum asks Max for "a kiss for Daddy."

Liz is with the hens now (the party, not Sharif's chooks) and they're discussing getting men trained to do things such as change nappies. Sally points out that Kevin barely did any of that with their girls, yet he seemed quite happy to do all the work with Jack. Gail talks about how perfect Michael is. Their laughter is interrupted by the arrival of Erica. Gail is suddenly not at all happy.

Anna and Owen are out on their own but Anna's still anxious about Fay.

Gail demands to know whether Erica is here to see Nick. We see the tacky picture of Gail and Michael now has a moustache. And Eileen has a smirk.

Steve's asleep on the sofa when Michelle comes in. She's furious about Eileen drawing the moustache on Gail. Steve points out that she lost Rock-Paper-Scissors.

Gavandy is outside waiting for Steph. He doesn't think he can go ahead with the plan. But now Steph's changed her mind. Michael's sitting inside beaming all over his face. They can't let him find out the truth. She says they have to make it look good, though. She musses up Gavandy's hair, rips his shirt and then fair whacks him across the face.

For those who wonder if updaters do anything else then at the very end of this report I detail my signature and a link to photos. Updates do get posted to both the blog and there are links to the restaurant reviews. Both are likely to have seen additions as we are out and about.

Tonight's episode was written by Damon Rochefort and directed by . Copyright remains the property of ITV. This is series 56, episode 47 or 8591 for the technically minded.

We open at the Bistro where the stag do has foregathered and Gavandy returns looking uncomfortable and a red mark on the side of his face where Steph smacked him one earlier. He tells a pitiful story about being mugged in an alley he used as a short cut. He refuses an ambulance but Nick calls the police. Steph gets him a brandy. Steve arrives and wants to know what has happened.

The hen do in the Rovers is watching Michelle chatting to Liz's mate Erica who has returned. Gail does not think much of her potential daughter out of law, reckoning she must be a lot older than her Nick. Maria does not think age differences matter and Audrey gives a display of the green-eyed monster by referring to her having a much younger gorgeous young man (Luke). Audrey would like to be 20 years younger. Sal observes that she would then still be twice his age. Maria then points out that Sal is older than Tim. She suggests there are only a couple of years between them but Maria reckons they must be dog years. Eileen offers Erica a fiver if she refers to Gail as mother-in-law to her face. Gail has heard of women like her who pray on younger men - panthers! Audrey counters with jaguars!. Maria corrects them - cougars. Gail does not want Erica getting her claws into her son again.

Somewhere away from the Street Roy and Ty are approaching their destination and they meet Sharif coming from the opposite direction. He accuses them of dirty tricks - he did go back for Roy but he had to go and get petrol earlier when Ty saw him driving off. Anyway they approach the front door and Aunty Brenda from Stella is there to greet them. Roy offers Sharif the first interview who compliments his host on an impressive pair of hanging baskets. Roy and Ty are sent to the through lounge to join in watching a programme about tornadoes.

In the Bistro Gavandy is being interviewed by a police woman and Steve is trying to tell jokes - not very well - although the other laugh. She is going to check the cctv cameras to see what they show. Steph immediately gets very nervous as she knows they will not show the robbery. Gavandy says they must both keep their heads. Michael gets them to join the stags.

The hen do are now arguing about who has ate the nuts. Gail has been counting the three g and ts which Erica has had in the last hour (and knocks back another glass of wine herself. Eileen comes to clear some of the many glasses and Audrey asks her to take a picture - annoying Gail who has spotted the moustache drawn on the picture. Eileen takes a second one. Liz offers them a bottle of bubbly on the house. Liz goes to get some classes whilst Audrey says the photos are good - particularly the one of Gail. Eileen suggests getting it framed to go on the mantelpiece to keep the children away from the fire. Gail tells her to close her mouth and open the bottle. Liz stops Eileen firing the cork at Gail. Eileen is prepared to bury the hatchet for one evening but Gail is not telling Eileen to fetch another glass - Eileen thinks it is for her; but Gail corrects her - it is for Liz.

On the other side of the Rovers Owen and Anna are sitting in silence when Katie, her mother (Linda) and Callum arrive together. Callum gets the drinks. Owen instantly spots that Callum carries a lot of cash and wonders who carries that sort of money. Katie says someone who wins (implying he gambles) trying to pass it off.

Michelle wants a word with Liz - she has to sack Eileen. Liz refuses to sack one of her best mates. Apparently Eileen is rude, slovenly and she might be drunk. We see her push Callum just a little too hard in the background as they all laugh over some joke. Liz says she will have a word later.

In the Bistro Steph drops a tray of drinks. Gavandy helps clear it up when his phone goes - it is the real Gavin. He wants to go to Steph's for the money - but they know they are short of cash. Gavin then walks into the Bistro and warns Gavandy that he will soon tell the old man if he does not get the cash.

Sharif and Roy emerge and both think they gave good accounts of themselves. As Roy walks back to the car he makes a decision. He is grown man dependent on others for lifts. It is wrong. He tells Ty to strap on the L plates and he will drive them home.

After the break the en do is singing when Ken enters. He had expected to find Audrey reading Anna Karenina. Sal asks if that is the tennis player. Ken offers to refresh the ice bucket and they accept. He agrees to join for one drink as he wants to know what Audrey thinks of chapter one.

Linda is going to learn Portuguese. Owen asks what Callum does and he responds security without any details. Owen asks for more details. Callum thinks it sounds like prospects.

Gail asks Erica if she is still there - no she left an hour ago and this is simply a hologram. Gail is pleased she is drinking in the Rovers and not the Bistro. Gail is sure that like Nick, Erica realises what a mistake that all was. Eileen tells Erica and Liz that Gail and Nick have a weirder relationship than Norman Bates and his mother. [PS Does anyone know when Bates Motel is returning? - another great tv series]. Todd arrives and Erica having seen the red rag waved is off to the Bistro!

At the Bistro there are no happy faces and the stag do winds down. Michael has a few things to sort. Steph wants to see Gavandy home safely. Erica arrives. "In all the bars in all the world I have to walk into this one" she says to Nick who has a huge grin on his face and clearly looks like the cat what got the cream!!

Back in t'Rovers Todd asks his mother for a freebie - but she turns him down. Audrey is asked to explain the story. Sal dismissive earlier comes up with a comment that the early events merely foreshadows what happens to Anna later and Ken is clearly stunned by her comprehension of the book. Sal claims to have read it many times to keep brain sharp. Ken departs wishing Gail well for Monday. Audrey then calls the massive book boring. Sal denies reading it - merely googling it when she went to toilet! Everyone apart from Audrey collapses in laughter and Audrey holds her head. At Audrey's suggestion it is a round of sambucca as she loves it. Gail asks Eileen for four shots. She responds that they have white and black so Gail orders two of each which Eileen accepts. Gail is astounded at how polite she was.

Owen is told off by Katie for having another go at Callum. Gail overhears Owen asking about what Callum does so she says "He is a drug dealer". "You what?" says Owen and she repeats it. She had it from the horse's mouth (well I do not think Kylie looks like a horse - but there you are). And Callum has been to prison an' all. Callum glowers under his eyebrows. Makes for a good cv. Katie launches at Anna and Owen pointing out how often Gary has been in court. Katie points out that he has bought the drinks all evening and has had nothing but abuse. She gets up and leaves with Callum. Anna goes - she has not enjoyed this evening. She tells Linda she should not have come - but Owen would have ruined it all by himself anyway. Owen goes after Anna.

The hen party knocks back the shorts. Steve returns with Lloyd and tells them about Gavandy getting mugged. Gail grabs he coat and departs.

At the Bistro Nick is reminding Erica that they had agreed to knock this on the head but she points out that women can change their minds. Steph and Gavandy depart. Nick tells Erica, who is trying to leave, not to play hard to get as it does not suit her. They lean into each other and kiss. Gavin, Steph and Gavandy depart together.

In the Rovers Sal, Eileen, Todd and Liz (displaying a lot of her legs) are sat around a table; all have had quite a bit to drink. Eileen observes that this will be Gail's sixth marriage. What has she got that Eileen does not have? Todd observes a load of dead husbands. Sal observes that relationships are never what they are cracked up to be. Eileen - "easy for you to say when you've got someone to keep you warm", she continues that Tony is the nearest she has had and he is shacked up with her best friend. Eileen says who could resist a woman like Liz - she has got her own pub! Sal suggests Eileen goes on the internet. Eileen says she has done that and met the weirdos, she would like to do it the old fashioned way. Todd suggests some good photos and he will big up her profile. She is distraught.

Out the back Michelle and Steve are discussing sacking Eileen - and she does have her good points. Steve thinks they might have been too hasty.

Back inside Sal cannot understand why Eileen is so upset. Liz does not want to see her upset. Steve comes in and assumes that Liz has just told Eileen she is sacked - but of course he has it completely wrong and although they try to stop him he effectively confirms her dismissal. (and no union reps or appeals!). Michelle realising that Steve has tripped over his own feet tries to correct it by saying it was only ever a few trial shifts. Liz explains that Eileen is upset over her (lack of) love life. Eileen stands - at least she knows that she is unemployable as well as unlovable. She staggers and does not want to hear any more and tells Jason to come on - he says his name is Todd. She slumps onto a seat. Obviously nearly everyone has had too much to drink.

At Steph's flat the money is counted. £2476 is a long way short of £5k which real Gavin wants. Real Gavin tells Gavandy and Steph they have until Monday to find the rest of it or he will talk to Michael at the wedding - the prodigal son returns.

Michael is telling Gail that Gavandy was behaving oddly. Anyway says Michael nothing is going to stop him from making Gail his wife on Monday. Absolutely nothing. And they head upstairs to bed.

What did we learn this evening?
a) That telling Michael might be easier than lying and stealing
b) Why is Audrey not reading the paperback version rather than something the size of year's bound magazines?
c) Michael is getting married on Monday.
d) Eileen is not getting it
e) Nick is.

See you next week.

Monday 9 March

Written by Chris Fewtrell Directed by Alan Grint

It's the morning of the wedding. Gail is tickled that Sarah and Beth will be able to see them during the reception due to the technology of video chat. David makes a sarcastic remark about how airplanes are very good for allowing people to actually be there. Gail dismisses that. Sarah is very busy. Max is playing a card game with David, something to do with guessing the heights of various things and people. Audrey recalls simple games of Happy Families. David makes a disparaging remark, considering it's not that appropriate for their family. Gail remands him. It is Happy Families today! She wants them all to behave and act like normal human beings. Audrey reports that she didn't even buy a new hat this time around and when she says she'd worn it to Gail's wedding to Richard, David quips "Oh the lucky hat, then!" Audrey reminds them all that time is ticking along and they need to get ready. David and Max go upstairs. Gail admits to Audrey that she has no doubts but does have butterflies. She's still worried the effect the stress will have on Michael's health. Audrey figures that marrying the person he loves is the best remedy of all.

Michael is in the Bistro, fussing over his vows. Andy and Step are fretting over Gavin while helping Leanne set up for the reception. Andy admits he's heard nothing from Gavin nor the police. Leanne straightens the bride and groom on the cake and Nick rushes in, late. He's clearly had a long and enjoyable night with Erica, much to the women's amusement. Gavin goes over his speech with Andy. It's a bit soppy but Andy reckons it's fine. He hesitates when Michael asks him about his own speech because of everything that's happened. Michael understands but Andy says he'll come up with something.

Owen is chatting to Jake at the table about work worries, though of course Jake doesn't really understand a word. Katy comes in with Joseph to ask if he can mind Joseph. Owen tries to object to her relationship to Callum but Katy stops him cold. She's a grown up and reminds him that everyone makes mistakes. Blinders still firmly on, I see. She mentions to Owen that Linda wants to come round later to see the little ones before she returns to Portugal. He doesn't mind. He's still glad she's going back, though.

Eileen complains to Julie and Todd in the cab office about Michelle and Steve. She's determined not to go into the pub again until she gets an apology. Julie suggests an evening in with a DVD but, knowing Julie's favourite type of movies, Romantic Comedies, Eileen is most certainly not in the mood. Julie goes off in a huff. Todd thinks Eileen was a bit hard. Julie was only trying to cheer her up. Eileen feels bad now and plans to apologize. She'll do a movie but only if it's one she's interested in for a change.

Emily comes into the cafe where she finds Billy and Sean. She apparently missed a musical fund raiser at the church but Billy wants to run some ideas past her. Emily orders a cup of tea and a bun from Roy who then finds Anna off in another world. He inquires if she's ok. She is. Katy and Callum come in and Katy tells Anna that Owen is looking after both Jake and Joseph and that Linda is there to see the children as well. Callum orders two takeaway teas but Anna looks upset.

In the flat, Linda is on the floor with the children. They reminisce about their own children. Linda regrets missing her girls' childhood and so many other things. Owen agrees that they would both made better choices but there's no point digging it all up again. You only get one life and you have to make the best of it. Linda agrees and smiles at him. He looks a bit uncomfortable and turns to get the boiling kettle.

Steph knocks on Gail's door and is let in just as we see Gavin coming down the street. Andy and Michael come out of the Bistro. Andy is still nervous but Michael is just excited. Gavin comes around the corner and walks across to them. Andy tells Gavin they're going to a wedding and Michael says that "Gavin" is his best man. Gavin tells Michael that his son hates him, has for all the years he's known him. Andy said they sorted things out and Michael says he was lucky that Andy was able to forgive him. Gavin spits that if he was Michael's son, he'd never forgive him. Ever. The cab to take them to the registry office pulls up. Gavin points out that Andy doesn't look a bit like Michael (and, in a way, Gavin does resemble Michael a bit in his build and looks, good casting!) They get in the cab as Gavin leaves. Michael advises Andy to stay clear, his friend is clearly a nasty piece of work. Andy broods as he watches Gavin walk away.

In Platt Towers, Steph, Gail and Audrey are drinking champagne while Gail is still fretting while Audrey is fussing over her hair. Audrey reminds her she can't go through life expecting the worst to happen. Gail points out that it usually does. And Steph has a lot of good reasons to worry that it will! Gail is also upset that her mother is wearing the same hat she wore to her and Richard's wedding and it's giving her flashbacks! Steph hesitantly, and not very convincingly assures Gail everything will be all right.

Linda and Owen chat about time progressing and good times they used to have. She even remembers the night they met. He recalls he'd just been dumped by a girl, something he'd lied about, turning it around because he was embarrassed she had told him he couldn't dance. Linda recalls that he looked a bit like Freddie Mercury when they met, with long hair, tache and bell bottoms! (but better teeth) They share a laugh over their memories. She then expresses again her regrets for having the affair. It's all water under the bridge. They notice Joseph is tired and Linda asks if she can put him down.

Billy and Sean are still talking to Emily. Her idea of a Bring and Buy doesn't really suit but Billy suggests that they will be having a Christian Comedy Night. Emily looks very disapproving. He assures her the comedians will not push any boundaries and since she doesn't want to appear to be too old fashioned and "po faced" she agrees to go along with it. Billy is pleased.

Leanne and Kal stroll down the road, he having offered what sounds like an hour of afternoon delight. Julie, suited and booted to work in the kebab shop, hollers out to Leanne. (Julie's covering for Chesney and their other regular employee). There seems to be a crisis and Julie needs Leanne's assistance. The chip fryer isn't working.

At the registry office, Nick takes charge to ease the obviously stressed groom and best man while David has taken the kids to a last minute loo break. He goes off to find out where they need to be. Michael notes that Andy has been a bag of nerves especially since they ran into their friend. Michael reminds him that he can talk to his father about anything but Andy just pretends the mugging has shaken him up more than he thought. Andy feels he's let everyone down but Michael insists that what happened was not his fault.

In the kebab shop, Leanne remarks that she's often told Dev that the fryer was dodgey as she fiddles with the plug. She puts it back in the power point and tells Julie to try again. Dodgey indeed. When they flip a switch it all sparks up and smoke fills the area. All the lights go out, too.

Todd has brought Eileen wine snacks but Eileen tells him that Julie has begged off due to the chip fryer conflict. Todd isn't really in the mood to watch a movie. Eileen jokes that she should try internet dating and after a joke at her expense, Todd says she really should try it. He urges her and offers to write her a good profile. She doesn't think it's a good idea. Tried it once and it was a disaster. Todd encourages her and points out that she doesn't have to commit to anything so she agrees to let him set her up on a site.

Owen confers with Anna on the phone as Linda comes out from putting Joseph down for a nap. She's impressed that he was offering to cook tea but noticed that he didn't mention that she was there. Owen knows Anna wouldn't have liked it and there isn't any point in worrying her unnecessarily. Linda realizes that Anna feels threatened by her and asks if Anna has any reason. She bites the bullet and admits she's upset about what happened back then and upset at seeing how much she's missed. He interrupts and apologizes for cutting her out of the girls' lives but what they had is in the past. She reckons it doesn't have to be. She admits she still loves him and suggests that he and the girls all move to Portugal and they can start a new life together. He looks like the defensive walls have just popped up all around him.

Gail comes downstairs in her pale (pink, I think) lacy dress and looks very nice, elegant. She tells Audrey she's feeling better, more settled. She asks her mother if she's being daft. Audrey admits she might have thought so six months ago but has come to know that Michael is a kind and gentle man and he genuinely loves her. She has one more fret over Michael and Audrey offers to nip over to the Bistro for one more warning to the staff not to let Michael drink too much. She leaves Gail alone. Gail sits down and looks at herself in the mirror and tells herself she deserves this, just as there's a knock on the door. A portent of doom, perhaps? She goes to answer the door and finds Gavin outside. She thinks it's the driver for the wedding car. He introduces himself. Gavin Rodwell. The real one.

Gail is still trying to process the fact that the man standing on her doorstep is Gavin Rodwell. How can he be? He shows her his passport and invites himself in. "Then who is …?" begins Gail. Gavin helpfully explains the other bloke is his flatmate Andy.

Meanwhile over at the register office, oblivious to the nightmare scenario back at home, Michael is in fine form and is busy regaling Nick, Andy and David with a story about how he once got arrested at a stag do.

At Anna and Owen's flat, Linda is about to leave but not without chancing her arm one last time with Owen. But he's adamant that he and Anna love each other and their relationship is for keeps. Just then, Anna appears. She's not impressed when she sees Linda. But Linda knows when she's not wanted and leaves them to it.

Over at the kebab shop the electrical fault has caused the power in the flat upstairs to go, too. Zeedan turns up at that moment and offers to take a look but there's no way his dad will trust him. Julie is in a state about losing customers and Leanne's worried about Si having to sleep in a cold flat. Kal's not keen but Zeedan insists on calling Tony to see if he can come and sort it out.

We return to Gail who is still trying to come to terms with what Gavin's just told her. She can't believe Andy would do something like that. There's a knock at the door. Gail quickly shoves Gavin upstairs before letting in Audrey and Steph. Audrey thinks Gail looks a bit peaky. She has got a bit of a dicky tummy, she admits, and insists her mam and Steph must go on ahead to the wedding to reassure Michael she's coming and she'll follow on in a taxi. Audrey wonders whether she's having second thoughts. No way, insists Gail, of course she wants to marry Michael. As soon as they've gone, Gavin reappears downstairs.

Back at Anna and Owen's, Anna is banging around the kitchen. Why did Owen lie to her about Linda being there? Linda was the love of his life she sobs and the mother of his children. Owen admits he didn't say anything because Linda asked him to go back to Portugal with him. "I knew it!" screams Anna. But Owen grabs hold of Anna, holds her tight and tells her that he's not going anywhere because he only wants to be with her.

Round at the kebab shop they're still waiting for Tony to arrive. Julie decides to ring Dev. After a phone call that lasts all of 10 seconds she relays the news that Dev's uncle has been taken seriously ill which means he'll have to stay in India for a while longer.

Anna has now calmed down and is beginning to feel silly about the way she reacted. Owen reassures her that Linda didn't turn his head, even for a second, and tells Anna that she has no idea how beautiful she is to him. He says that there isn't a day goes by when he doesn't thank his lucky stars that she decided to take a chance on a bloke like him.

Gavin is laying his cards on the table with Gail. He's after money. Andy only came up with £2,500 and he wants five grand so Gail needs to come up with the rest. But where's Gail going to get her hands on that sort of cash? In that case, Gavin says, he'd better ask her other half. "No!" exclaims Gail and says that if he has any kind of compassion …. Gavin sneers at the thought of anyone having compassion for his dad. He says he feels nothing for him and then corrects himself – if he keeled over and died, he tells Gail, that would be a very good thing. He adds that if Gail wants him to show her just how much he hates his dad, there'll never be a better day than this.

The registrar is checking her watch. If Gail doesn't turn up soon it'll be too late. Audrey and Steph arrive and insist Gail's on her way but Michael doesn't buy the story of her dicky tummy for one minute – he's convinced she's stood him up.

Meanwhile, back at home, Gail's begging Gavin to believe that his father isn't a bad man, that he's never stopped loving his son and that Gavin shouldn't do anything to upset him as he's not a well man. But all Gavin cares about is getting the other half of his five grand. He makes to leave so Gail tells him to wait, she needs more time.

Round at Eileen's, Todd's taking his mum's photo, ready to upload her profile onto the internet dating site. Julie arrives back, full of tales of woe about the electrics in the kebab shop. She gets stuck into Eileen's bottle of wine without waiting to be asked then announces she's forgotten to bring round the DVD, Never fear, Todd tells her, they have all the entertainment they need. Julie perks up considerably when she discovers what they're up to, much to Eileen's discomfort.

Owen and Anna are having a quiet drink in the Rovers when Liz points out that Linda is sitting by herself over in the corner. Owen suggests they leave but Anna's not going anywhere now she knows she's got her man.

Julie's taken over the writing of Eileen's profile. She reckons it brings out Eileen's caring and nurturing qualities but Eileen's done with being nurturing, she declares she wants adventure and excitement. Todd has a go and – apart from getting him to knock ten years off her age – Eileen's delighted with the end result. She reckons she'd go out with herself if she read her profile.

We return to wedding where the registrar tells Michael she's sorry but they've run out of time. At that moment, Gail arrives. "I'm so sorry!" she cries. She says she's ready now but an angry Michael tells her she's too late. Gail sobs that he knows she wouldn't have missed this wedding for the world but Michael is furious and tells her he doesn't know anything anymore and then storms out.

Leanne, Kal and Simon arrive at the Nazirs and break the news to Zeedan that Leanne and Simon are staying while the electric get fixed. As if that's not bad enough Zeedan's told that Simon is sharing his room. He stomps upstairs in a rage while Si looks smug and makes himself at home with the tv remote.

Back in the Rovers, Anna speaks to Linda. She tells her she knows it's going to be hard going back to Portugal alone when she was hoping things were going to be different. But she and Owen aren't ready for Linda's reply. She tells them that she's going to ask Izzy and Katy to go back with her.

In the Bistro Steph and Andy are trying to work out what's happened when Gail appears. She's come to speak to Andy and it doesn't take him long to work out that Gail's seen Gavin and she knows the truth. Andy asks what Gavin told her. Gail replies he told her a lot but mostly he came to demand money. He came to blackmail her, sobs Gail, so that the man she loves and was going to marry doesn't find out the truth. Andy tells Gail that she can't make him feel worse than he already does but Gail says she thinks she can. Gail says she came to tell Andy that if anything happens to Michael because of what he's done she's going to hold him accountable. "Both of you," she adds, looking at Steph.

Wednesday 11 March

David is ranting about Callum, but Gail obviously has other things on her mind – Michael. Just then Andy arrives, with Michael in tow. He's persuaded him to come, he thinks they should talk. Michael tells Gail he's spent the night thinking about her explanation and he doesn't believe it, he wants her to tell him the truth. He starts to get agitated, but then stops, a little breathless. Andy and Gail are obviously concerned and he starts to say he's fine, but when Gail urges him to tell the truth he admits he's been feeling out of breath lately and is seeing the consultant tomorrow. He turns to leave, saying this has been a waste of time. Gail tells him that whatever he thinks, she's totally committed to him and would never lie to him. Andy looks extremely uncomfortable.

Owen goes into the cafe and tells Anna that his girls are going to go out for lunch with Linda. He thinks the only reason she wants the girls to go to Portugal is to get one over on him and he's going to tell them that. Anna warns him not to go steaming in, after the way he's lied to the girls in the past anything he says now will make them more likely to go, just to spite him. She tells him to stay out of it and hope they see sense.

Meanwhile, Izzy, Katy and Linda are enjoying lunch in the bistro. She tells them that she's leaving next week and wants to spend as much time with them as she can. Katy says they can come and visit in the summer, it's easy from Manchester. Linda then tells them she would like them to go back with her, to start a new life in Portugal. They stare at her, stunned.

Leanne and Kal are at the breakfast table. Leanne gets a call from Tony, he's looking at the flat but it's going to take longer than he thought. Zeedan hopes he hurries up, he can't put up with Simon sharing his room for much longer, he woke him up at 6am. Just then Sharif arrives home, telling them that it was so good Yasmeen has stayed another night. They then explain to him that Leanne has no electricity in her flat and she and Simon stayed with Kal and Zeedan last night. She hurriedly tells him that if it's a problem she can go somewhere else, but Sharif tells her it won't be necessary, she's most welcome.

Linda is selling Portugal to her daughters. She tells them it's a fantastic country, the weather is great, the schools are good, they could live with her unless they wanted to get a place of their own, she would take care of the rent. They could work for her too, they'd be unlikely to get the sack! They ask if Owen knows about this. She tells them he does, and of course, he doesn't want to lose them, but it's their decision.

Eileen meets Gail outside. She starts to make glib remarks about what happened, but Gail doesn't bite. She walks on, looking sad, with Eileen calling after her that she was only mucking about.

Back in the bistro, Linda wants to know what the girls are thinking. Izzy is doubtful, she doesn't think she could take Jake away from his dad. Katy also thinks it's a big thing. She's just starting a relationship with Callum, and she doesn't think she could take Joseph away from Chesney, although she does think it all sounds amazing.

Gail is also in the bistro, talking to Andy and Steph. She tells Andy he can now add wrecking a marriage to his list, and bringing Michael round did no good. She asks them if they're any nearer to sorting out the money, but they aren't. Steph wants to know if she's going to tell Michael, but Gail can't while his heart is the way it is. She says that unless they want Michael's death on their consciences they'd better find the money. When she's gone, Steph asks Andy what they're going to do. He thinks they should go and see Gavin and make him see sense.

Eileen meets Michael outside, and tells him how down in the dumps Gail was earlier. Eileen felt sorry for her, she thinks Gail and Michael make a good couple. She leaves Michael looking thoughtful.

Sean is also out in the Street and bumps into Billy. He can't go out with him later because he's working, but he invites Billy to come and sit and bar and chat while he works. Billy's got some flyers for the comedy night, and Sean offers to give some out for him. Just then Emily comes around the corner, but she's vague and distant and doesn't seem inclined to stop and chat. Sean wonders if she disapproves of their friendship.

Owen sees Linda walking along. "Well?" he asks. She tells him it's just going to be her going back to Portugal, the girls don't want their sons taken from their fathers.

Julie and Todd are looking at the internet dating site with Eileen. She's not impressed by the responses she's had so far, and wonders if there is anyone normal amongst them. Todd urges her to be realistic, she's not going to find Colin Firth!

Steph and Andy go to see Gavin. They tell him they can't get the money and he should be grateful for what he's got. Andy can't believe he was ever mates with such a scumbag. Gavin tells him he wants the money tomorrow or he's going to tell Michael the truth.

In Kal's house, Leanne offers to cook the evening meal as a way of saying thank you. Sharif says if she needs eggs he can get them from the hens in the back garden, and takes Simon out to show him.

Katy and Callum are sitting outside the fish and chip shop while Max rides around on his bike and Joseph runs after him. Katy tells Callum about her mum's offer of living in Portugal. Callum says he would have gone in a flash. Just then Max and Joseph have a collision and Joseph ends up on the ground. As they pick him up, Chesney comes along all guns blazing, demanding to know what's happened, and tells Callum to keep his son under control. Callum retorts that Chesney's son is a wimp, and the two of them start squaring up to each other until Katy intervenes and tells Chesney that Joseph is fine and he can go. Katy and Callum then end up having a row and he calls her a slapper. He walks off just as Linda arrives on the scene. "I'd say you just had a lucky escape," she tells Katy.

Billy is in the Rovers chatting to Sean who is behind the bar. Emily comes in and Sean serves her with sherry. He asks if she's coming to the comedy night. "Some questions are best not asked," she says, "as a refusal often offends."

Callum takes Max home a few minutes late, to a grumpy David. David calls Max, who is getting a bit hyperactive, to take his pill, and tells Callum he only sees the good bits when he takes Max out. Callum retorts that seeing Max like that won't put him off, he's here to stay. As he leaves, Callum asks Max if he'd like to meet his other Gran, and David gets very annoyed and asks what he thinks he's doing. Callum tells David he can't stop Max seeing his relatives, but David thinks he should have run it by him first. "You're forgetting, I'm his dad, I'll do what I think is best for him," says Callum.

Leanne, Kal and the family are sitting round the table. They all like the casserole Leanne has cooked. Just then Leanne gets a call from Tony. The flat needs rewiring completely and she won't be able to move back in for another week.

Michael arrives at the bistro to see Gail. Much to her relief he says he thinks he was a bit hasty. As they're talking, Gavin comes in. Michael sees him and tells Gail that he gives him the creeps, and he doesn't even know him.

Katy and Linda have gone to the cafe for a cuppa, and discuss Portugal again. Linda points out that Chesney can always visit, she'd pay if money is a problem, and if it didn't work out Katy could always get the next plane back.

Gail goes up to the counter and tells Gavin that she will find the rest of the money he wants by tomorrow, on condition that he leaves right now and never comes back. She goes back to the table and Michael suggests that they book another date for the wedding.

Up in their flat, Anna, Owen and Izzy are talking about Katy breaking up with Callum and the fact that neither of the girls are going to Portugal. Just then Katy and Linda come in and Katy breaks the news that she's now decided to go to Portugal after all. Anna thinks this is just because she's on the rebound from Callum and should wait until things settle. Katy says she doesn't want to wait, she wants to go now. Owen thinks it's all about him, and Katy admits that part of it is, things haven't been the same since she found out the truth about her mother. Owen asks what she's going to say to Chesney. "That's the only problem," says Katy, "I have absolutely no idea."

Friday 13 March

Hello,

Friday the 13th isn't popular with Michael and Gail - not when he's got an appointment with the consultant. Michael's still a bit snappy about being jilted. David's been out buying sweets to buy Max's devotion. Callum's taking him to meet his "real" grandma later.

Preparations are under way for Fay's surprise birthday party. Izzy points out to Owen, Anna and Gary that it might be their last celebration all together as a family if Katy goes to Portugal. Katy arrives and insists they are going.

Todd's having his toast when Eileen puts the laptop down in front of him to show him a forklift driver called Adrian. She's meeting him later. Eileen's put out a selection of clothes so she can decide what to wear but Todd's not impressed by any of them.

Leanne and Simon are at the cafe for breakfast. Leanne's surprised Simon's not eating more. When she and Toyah were his age they would have grabbed everything they could. Tracy hears this and makes some sideways comments about Leanne and Toyah's thieving past - to the great interest of Zeedan, who is listening. But Tracy's called over by Sean, who tries to persuade her to go to the comedy night at the church. The thought of going into a church puts Tracy right off. Kirk also refuses to go, saying he doesn't really like comedy.

Gail hands over an envelope of money and tells Andy/Gavin/Gavandy she's going with him. She's not going to hand over any money to the real Gavin until she's sure he won't be coming back.

Chesney and Anna chat in the cafe. When he leaves, Anna talks to Gary about how devastated Ches will be if Katy takes away Joseph. Craig and Fay arrive and Anna tells Fay she can have anything she wants. Fay is a bit alarmed by talk of a birthday cake because she doesn't want a fuss.

The real Gavin opens his door to Gavandy and Gail. The place is a mess and he's clearly hung over, though he brightens a bit when he sees what's in the envelope. He promises to leave Michael alone now. In fact, he's off to Leeds. Gail and Gavandy both tell him he shouldn't be driving. Gail points out he's probably still over the drink-driving limit.

On the landing on their way out, Gail tells Gavandy that all they have to do now is learn to live with themselves.

It's break time at the factory and they're talking about Sinead. Sean thinks they could all do with cheering up and suggests Billy's comedy night. "Think of it as a works outing," he says. "Look what happened on the last one," says Kirk. Sally starts to tell an anecdote about a Lenny Henry show she once went to. Suddenly, everyone is keen to get back to work.

Gail joins Michael at the hospital where the consultant is running late. Michael points out he'd rather be going off to Amsterdam or Morocco rather than sit in a waiting room.

Craig and Fay walk home together. Fay suggests they go to his place but Craig says they should go to hers because her mother's a better cook than his. Behind Fay's back he sends a text to Anna to say they're on their way.

Inside the flat, it's cheers and balloons when they arrive. Tim is limping and says he's fine. He just fell off the ladder when he saw a spider. Gary takes Fay aside to ask if she's OK.

Simon's on the sofa with Zeedan, watching a film he shouldn't be seeing. Zeedan is not happy. Simon tries to get out of going to Fay's party but Leanne insists he get his coat. She bends down and quietly tells Zeedan that it's fine if he has a problem with her, but he shouldn't take it out on Simon. "He's just a kid."

Steph and Gavandy discuss how relieved they are. Gavandy's phone rings. It's clearly something serious. "What? Are you sure?" he asks the caller. He seems close to tears.

Back at the party, Craig tells Fay that Anna forced him to keep his mouth shut about the party. We see Owen playing happily with Joseph. Tim tries to persuade Fay to get up and dance but she won't. She stands up and tells everyone she has to go over to Craig's to get her MP3 player.

Tracy interrupts Todd using his laptop in the shop. It seems he's visiting online dating sites, though Tracy thinks some bloke called Geoff is a bit old for Todd and she doesn't like the look of him at all.

Julie's trying to persuade Eileen to do some role playing before she goes off to meet Adrian. Julie asks whether this is what she's wearing. It's presentable, but is presentable enough? Doesn't Eileen want alluring? Eileen doesn't want alluring. If he turns out to be some "twonk with halitosis" she wants to be able to get rid of him. Todd arrives and thinks she looks good, though he and Julie argue over whether Eileen should be wearing a scarf. Eileen leaves them to it.

Outside, she greets Sean and Billy, wishing them good luck for the comedy night. Billy is nervous about the whole thing and asks Sean if he could tell people he's the vicar's pal, rather than his boyfriend. They're having enough trouble adjusting to a new vicar without adding a vicar's boyfriend into the mix. Sean is a bit disappointed and says he's not going.

Over at Craig's house, Fay tells him she feels bad about disappointing Anna. Craig says once it all comes out about the baby Anna will understand. Fay denies this. Anna is NEVER going to find out about the baby. She can't do that to Anna, not after what the family has been through. And now with Katy taking Joseph away to Portugal . . . "You what?" asks Chesney, who has arrived in time to hear this last bit.

At the hospital, Steph and Gavandy see Gail waiting for Michael to come out of the consulting room. "It's Gavin," they tell her. "He's dead!"

The end of the first episode.
Margaret Carr

When this episode was broadcast I was in Nerja in Spain (an hour from Malaga by road). Weather was pretty good most of the week and the food good all week. Hopefully photos and updates have reached the blog link at the end of the update. We visited the Alhambra - why is that important? Because it is located in Granada and now the link becomes obvious; Granada the TV company was named after the Spanish City and of course Granada was responsible for the delights we are about to sample. The Alhambra is a series of palaces marking the height of the Moorish period in Western Europe - the last 150 years has seen some remarkable restoration work on them and they remain as a monument to that period of Muslim history.

Tonight's events in the Street of Weatherfield were written by Jan McVerry and directed by Alan Grint; copyright these days is the property of ITV, although no doubt the Granada company remains a dormant entity!

We open at the hospital where Gavandy and Stephanie are advising poor browbeaten and devastated Gail (who looks older with every passing calamity at the moment) of the death of the "real" Gavin. Steph recounts the events of the accident and Gail's initial response is to ask Gavandy if he had arranged for the brakes to be tampered with! Steph is outraged. Gavandy has lost a mate and is upset - but as pointed out he had a ticking bomb in his chest and a bottle of vodka in his veins (not much chance of escaping those two).

Leanne and Si turn up at Faye's party - but no-one is pleased to see them and it is explained that Faye has gone to get some proper music. Leanne has a glass of wine and Si has a large dry white ... lemonade! (It should be a large R White lemonade of course). Leanne says that Faye will be sat on a wall somewhere eating chips, happy as Larry. Si says who is Larry? Tim pipes up that all the Larries he has ever known are miserable gits and tells us about them. (Larry was a boxer in NZ in the 1890s who won $150k and a newspaper used the headline which stuck). Chesney storms in and wants to know if it is true that Katie is off to Portugal. She can think again about taking his son.

Back at the hospital Steph is filling in the details - the police phoned Marty in Leeds as the last number on the phone and he called Gavandy. Gavandy is blaming himself for not pushing the heart problem and for everything, saying the death is his fault.

Back at the party Leanne and Si depart and Anna ushers Tim out as well. Faye and Craig return. Katie is telling Chesney that she meant to come and tell him - pointing out that she had told the others that she needed to talk to him - so revealing they all knew. Chesney is wound up. The party breaks up with Katie and Chesney arguing over the potential for a better like where Katie cannot say any Portuguese apart from peri peri chicken (and that is all you need in my experience). Chesney goes off on one about Linda and her big talk about Portugal and accuses Katie of having fallen for it. Inevitably at this moment Linda wanders in (and once again avoids saying "Joe" which was about all she used to utter in 'Enders) and defends herself against the tirade. She emphasizes the outdoor life and that Joseph will be safe (I wonder if she only got the job because she knows the name of her grandson). Chesney responds by pointing out that Joseph's place and his family is here. "End of" says Chesney departing. Owen lobs in his feelings - until Linda showed up they were all getting on just fine.

Back to the hospital where Gail has been getting drinks. Gavandy is trying to explain that he has a long history with Gavin and the two of them had a great time for years. Gail points out that Michael will never get to meet Gavin. Michael appears through a door and apparently the news is not good.

Linda and Katie discuss the arrangements. Katie wants to go - but Chesney even if he sees the villa and the town is not going to leave Sinead at the moment; so they think about leaving Joseph behind. Katie comes clean and admits that Chesney is a great dad and she is the flaky one. They talk about Katie's future with her staying in Weatherfield - but she does not want to let Linda go now she has found her. She can spend summers in the sun - but she does not look convinced.

At Sharif's house Zeedan finds Si and finds out the party got canned. Si complains he cannot pull girls - he is wearing clothes from the market, the precinct and last season's strip. Cheap and there is no reason to hang out with him despite the cute face.

In the Rovers Eileen is consuming some Dutch courage. And another. She admits that coming into a pub is no fun when you work in one. Julie, Sean and Todd arrive to provide moral support but she sends them on their way as she does not need it! She is quite capable of scaring off "Mr Country Walks" on her own without help. She sends them off the stock up on consolation chocolates.

Behind Sean he can here Emily (wonderful, wonderful Emily) talking to Rita about a piece of pottery which she recognised as valuable and had rung a dealer and had raised £320 for the hospital friends. Sean wanders over, coughs and expresses his opinion that Emily apparently is unable to conceive of love and faith (referring to himself and Billy) in a modern way. Emily is totally lost by this tirade and as Sean continues Billy appears behind his shoulder. Sean calls Emily a bigot for not being at the comedy night supporting Billy. Emily and Rita are both taken aback.

At the Platt residence Gail and Michael return. Team Rodwell reports that the measurements show no improvement since the op with no more oxygen getting through - hence Michael being so tired. Gail is surprised at Audrey's knowledge - but of course it is not dis-similar to Alfie's problems. A really cheering assessment states David naming a dead person in this situation! All this talk of death further upsets Gavandy {as t'other is dead now I suppose he can just be Gavin?} given he has lost Gavin. Other options exist but Michael is realistic - he will not qualify for a transplant. Leanne texts wanting Gavin and Steph at the Bistro. Michael suggests they all go to the Bistro but David has to stay and wait for Max.

Billy apologises on behalf of Sean for not explaining matters. Sean is still in combat mode but Emily wants a word herself. She is no homophobe - but Sean disagrees saying her actions speak louder than words; that she has been cool and sniffy with them. Sean accuses Emily of not liking Billy; but she says she is a traditionalist and prefers a good choir to a night of alternative comedy and everything else is in Sean's imagination. Sean admits that he may have misjudged the situation and if so he is very sorry that he has offended her. She is saddened but not offended and both Billy and Sean accept her generosity and consider the matter closed. Billy realises that life with Sean is not going to be easy.

After the break we open with Todd and Julie scoffing chocolates when Eileen returns home. Eileen did not bottle it - she rang him and agreed to get to know him before they met. Todd promises to find her her perfect man.

Michelle brings a drink out to Sean and comforts him - and the Billy comes out as well. Sean says he despises himself. Billy says that words must be cheap to Sean the way he throws them around - despise, bigot, injustice. Sean says he is an idiot. Billy seeks to explain their worlds are different - and he does not need Sean to stand up for him in that way. Billy says that as a vicar his priority must be his parishioners. Billy's mission cannot be reduced to a set of glib headlines - far more subtle than that and he does not want to be Sean's next crusade. Sean says it has been over since Billy asked that they be just friends. Billy disagrees. Billy says that he came in earlier to apologise for that comment - which was just as well as it saved Emily. Billy goes.

Leanne comes in on Si and Zeedan looking at new trainers - £100. Leanne recalls being a fashion martyr in the nineties - so says Zeedan why is Si dressed like a kid and not a teenager. Si promises to keep the white trainers really white. And they will never ever go in the washing machine [lovely relationship developing between Z and S. The former is becoming almost likeable; he just needs a shave, a collar and tie and he will almost be a respectable young man. Do not knock the collar and tie - watch out for Callum in the near future]. Leanne agrees - there will be some new trainers.

Izzy and Katie are discussing San Rafael. Katie says she has nothing other than a nice smile and she wants a new start and can abandon her past history. Izzy says she will not hold her back - but she has to sort Ches out herself.

On the bench Ches is trying to think. Joseph was not an accident - they chose to have him and to bring up. And if Katie goes to Portugal then Ches will be no better than his own father. He believes Katie is selfish. Owen says it is down to Linda and her money - and Katie is thinking about herself. Chesney agrees.

Max has been worn out and David returns downstairs from putting him to bed. There is a letter from the solicitor - mediation is being proposed and David knows he is only a slippery downhill slope to losing Max.

Gail tells Gavin that he must be the best Gavin he can possibly be for Michael's sake. But she forgets this is a soap and the truth always comes out.

Roll credits

What did we learn tonight:
a) Emily likes good choirs
b) Emily does not like alternative comedy
c) Gavin and Andy bagged Munros (look it up for yourself)
d) Katie wants a better life and frankly who can blame her - just watch out for when Linda starts talking about "Joe"!

And in place of ITV player this week the hard disk on the recorder in the corner was used - gainful employment after several years. See you next week.

Monday 16 March

Written by Joe Turner Directed by Jo Johnson

Emily and Billy make peace on the doorstep but Sean casts a worried glance from over the road (which she notices). Elsewhere, Chesney comes out of the house with Joseph, watched by Katy with a look of respect for Chesney but disappointment for herself on her face.

In the cafe, Gail, Michael, Steph and Andy are having a morning breakfast treat at Andy's treat. Gail is quiet but pretends she's just concerned. Michael is going to talk to Lloyd to see about getting back to work. Slowly, he assures Gail. After he leaves, Gail gives Andy the evil eye. Andy promises to stay and be a good son to Michael but he can't do it on his own. Katy comes in and is surprised to see her father there with her mother. It's Linda's last day. Katy tells her mother that she can't take Joseph away from Chesney and can't go without him so it's off. Linda's gutted and tries to persuade her, citing the wonderful opportunities for her and feels like she's losing Katy all over again. Katy promises to come visit and to see her off.

Simon casts aspersions at Kal's habit of putting yogurt on cereal. Zeedan comes in from the garden, having done egg duty. They realize that Simon doesn't know what's going on and they decide to recruit him to the team and fill him in on the undercover operation. Simon is most definitely in!

Chesney sees Katy outside the cafe and is defensive, promising solicitors if she insists on taking Joseph away. Katy shouts that she's not going. That's told you. What does he say? "Are you sure?" She affirms it so he goes off, mollified. Owen tells her she made the right decision but she reckons she had no choice.

Callum arrives at Number 8 with a bag containing a kid's version of the Manchester City away strip. Gail tells him it's wrong to spoil a child but Callum says he wants Max to have what he never did. When he mentions mediation, Gail is sure the authorities won't give the care of a child to a hooligan but Callum informs her that his mother is coming too, Max's real grandmother. Maybe they can arm wrestle for him!

In the gym, Katy is moaning to Izzy when Callum comes in. But Katy tells him to get lost. No can do, Callum tells her smugly, he's there for his intro to the gym. Kal points out the appointment in the book which she hadn't noticed, it being right under her nose and all. Kal wonders why Katy is there as she had a Personal Trainer exam today. Dismayed, Katy realizes she's not going to get there in time. Kal mentions it will put her back three months. Oh dear.

In the hospital, Beth is visiting Sinead with Chesney and telling her all the factory gossip. Sinead misses it but is assured she'll be back soon enough. Chesney is just sat there looking miserable. Sinead asks what's up. He says everything is ok now and tells her that Katy was going to take Joseph to Portugal but he managed to persuade her to change her mind after kicking off about it. Beth doesn't trust either of them but Chesney assures them that Joseph isn't going anywhere. Sinead asks if he's coming to her physio session, it really helps when he's there to encourage her.

Linda is waiting outside Streetcars with Owen, Anna and Izzy, ready to go. Izzy promises to stay in touch. Linda tells Izzy not to be too hard on her father and Katy finally turns up just as the cab does. It's clear Katy has been crying. It's emotional all around as Linda says goodbye and gets into the cab and drives away. Owen offers them all a drink in the Rovers but Izzy and Katy aren't in the mood and Anna goes back to work.

Tyrone is having his dinner in the cafe and is sitting with Emily who's asking after Fiz. Tyrone tells her that Fiz is exhausted looking after her mother and the kids (so that settles the question about where the children are). Tyrone is going there on the weekend to give Fiz a break and says he really misses them. Anna rushes back in and Sean comes in behind her. Emily goes over to talk to him. Sean apologizes again for his behaviour. Emily puts it down to being passionate but Sean realizes he often gets passionate about all the wrong things. When she asks if he's spoken to Billy, he quietly says that he can't face him, sure he's messed it all up.

Katy finds Callum in the pub. He's on the phone arranging something or other. Katy sits down and insists he buy her a drink.

In the Bistro, Gail wants Andy and Steph to hold the fort now it's quiet while she goes to check on Michael. Andy doesn't think it's a good idea, Michael will know from Gail's expression that something's up. Gail caustically remarks that it's his fault she has to lie to the man she loves. She tells Andy that as soon as Michael's better, he has to leave for good. Andy looks like he's been kicked in the gut. Steph comes over and tells them they have a very big problem. She's realized that Andy has been using Gavin's National Insurance number for his payroll and once Gavin's death is registered, all manner of flags are going to be raised if someone realizes a dead man is still being paid. Steph considers that she could delete Gavin from the payroll system...

Sharif is having an egg dish at the Bistro and they are found lacking, not a patch on his fresh ones. Why he even bothered to order eggs at a restaurant when he thinks he has his own fresh ones, I don't know. Zeedan wonders the same thing. Sharif says he ordered the omelet to prove his point. Ah.

At the conspirators' table, deleting Gavin is not seen to be a good plan. Steph suggests they then use Andy's number against Gavin's name in their payroll system. Gail isn't sure it will work. Surely the name difference will show up somewhere. (That's how Mike Baldwin sussed out Hayley's real identity. Her National Insurance number was still hung on Harold Patterson's name) Andy says he knows his number and Gail reckons it might be a bad plan but it's the only one they have. As Nick and Leanne won't be back for a few hours, it looks like that's what's going to happen.

In the pub, Katy is getting drunk and angry and resentful as she commands Callum to buy her another drink. He's refusing and drags her out to take her home. Billy comes in to see Emily at her request. She tells him she was talking to another of his parishioners who has developed a serious problem to do with communication. She hopes he can help. Now. Here. What? Sean comes from the back room, and stops short, seeing Billy. They realize they have been set up. Billy chides her. He's got a lot of important things to do but she reminds him that she, too, is one of his parishioners and tells him to get over himself. Jaws drop. (Oh Emily, you've still got it!) She points out they are both stubborn and advises the caring vicar to deal with it and leaves.

Nobody can find the key to Nick's office! Andy thinks there must be another key somewhere. Gail is livid. She orders them back to do their jobs and deals with it herself, pulling out her phone to call Owen.

Sharif has come in from the garden. Simon is doing homework at the table. He offers to help but Simon says he's got it in hand. Sharif goes upstairs to shower. When he leaves, Simon pulls the egg carton out of the fridge.

Callum is leading Katy home. She stumbles as she gets her keys out. She glares at Callum who has caught her before she'd fallen and tells him she doesn't like him. He assures her the feeling is mutual. Chesney comes down the road just then and sees her struggling with Callum who's only trying to keep her from falling over. He runs across to rescue Katy. He confronts Callum who tells Chesney he should be scared of him but leaves Katy to Chesney and stalks off. Katy starts to cry, she feels stupid. He takes her inside.

At the hospital, Sinead is wondering where Chesney is. She tells Beth she's going to stand up on her own today but she wants to do it for Chesney. Beth is pleased for her. The therapist comes in to fetch her and she can't wait for Chesney as she has other patients waiting.

Sharif catches Simon putting eggs in the hutch. Simon tries to lie that he was just comparing the eggs but it's no good. Sharif suspects that Simon isn't alone and realizes Kal and Zeedan have been setting him up.

Inside, Chesney talks to Katy who tells him the disaster of a day she's had. She can't seem to do anything right. Chesney's phone rings but he turns it off.

Sinead is at the parallel bars and ready to stand up but is upset Ches isn't there. She's encouraged by the therapist to go for it. She raises herself up slowly and gingerly lets go of the bars but stumbles. Try again. She concentrates and lets go again, but stumbles again. She's discouraged and upset. Beth holds her and lets her cry.

Owen has changed the lock on the office door (or just got through it) and doesn't charge Gail for it. She makes him promise not to tell Nick and Leanne she was foolish enough to lock her key inside. She insists he take some cash, for hush money if nothing else so he does, with a laugh. She goes inside and sits at the computer. The password to the computer is conveniently Nick's birthday. She opens up the payroll application and changes the number which she has written on a piece of paper. Before she can save it, Michael opens the door and interrupts.

Katy's feeling sorry for herself. How has she messed up yet again? She has visions of herself waking up one day as middle aged mum with a husband who drinks and she'll wonder how she ended up there. She tells Ches through her mascara-stained face that she doesn't want that for herself and she doesn't want it for Joseph, either. Ches asks if she's having second thoughts about Portugal.

In the Bistro Michael tells Gail she'd never make a poker player – he knows she's covering something up. Digging herself ever deeper into a hole Gail tells him she was checking the wages on the computer because she thinks Leanne's underpaid her.

At the hospital Beth is trying to reassure Sinead that she will get there eventually. But Sinead has sunk into a depression over Ches not turning up and she pretends to be asleep.

Billy and Sean are having a whispered argument by the bar while Emily and Julie watch hopefully from a distance. Billy says he can't behave in the way Sean would like him to, he's a vicar and he's made a commitment to the church. What about his commitment to him, Sean wants to know. Billy insists he is committed to him – he just can't share it with the world. Sean replies that he can't be a person he just puts away in a box before spinning on his heel to serve another customer.

Round at the Nazirs, Simon looks on as Sharif suddenly starts faking a bad back. Zeedan asks if he can get his father anything. Sharif replies that he could do with some help with the chickens later. When Kal comes in Sharif catches Simon's eye and puts his finger to his lips.

Ches is saying goodbye to Katy. They seem to have made up their earlier differences. Ches says he doesn't want to lose Joseph and Katy promises he's not going to. Beth appears at that moment. She's furious with Ches for abandoning Sinead at the hospital in her hour of need. She tells him about Sinead trying to stand up and says that if Ches loves her then he needs to get his act together.

Leanne comes into the Bistro. It's obvious Gail's on edge about something so Michael tells Leanne why – she's underpaid her. Only trouble is, Nick overhears and tells them that he was the one who did the wages.

Katy is round at Owen and Anna's. Her Dad is giving her a hard time when he hears she forgot to sit her exam. She decides to take Joseph home but at that moment Ches turns up. Katy asks if he's alright. He replies that there's something he's got to say.

Chesney has come to a big decision. He tells Katy that seeing what's happened to Sinead has made him realise that you never know what's round the next corner and that you should take every opportunity that comes your way. He thinks going to Portugal will be good for Joseph and so he's prepared to let Katy take him there after all. Owen tells them they're making a big mistake but Izzy says it's called making a decision. Katy can't believe what Ches has done for her – for both of them Chesney corrects her. Since they'll be leaving within a couple of days – this is Coronation Street, after all, where you can emigrate to another country with barely time to pack a toothbrush – Katy suggests Ches takes Joseph home for the night.

Julie and Emily are watching Sean and Billy. Emily fears her interference hasn't helped. But as it turns out, her fears are unfounded. As the two men continue to talk Sean admits that although he'll find it hard to keep his feelings under wraps for the sake of not upsetting Billy's parishioners, he's never had feelings like this for anyone before and he just doesn't think he can give Billy up. Billy smiles at him. The feeling's mutual and it seems their relationship is back on track.

Ches turns up at the hospital to see Sinead. He's come to apologise for not turning up earlier. He's also got something to tell her he says.

In the Bistro they're discussing the "mistake" with the wages. Nick now believes that it's his fault and puts it down to still have problems with his memory so now Gail has that to add to her list of things to worry about. When she gets Andy and Steph on their own she tells them exactly what she thinks of them and the mess they've got her into.

Sharif is giving instructions to Kal and Zeedan. He can't move with his bad back so he needs them to talk to his chickens. Kal and Zeedan look confused. Sharif explains that the chickens started to lay eggs once he began talking to them.

Sinead is giving Chesney a hard time about his decision to let Katy take Joseph to Portugal. He insists it will give Joseph a better quality of life but Sinead thinks he's only doing it because of her situation. She tells Ches she can't be responsible for him losing his son. He tells her that the only way she's responsible is that it's made him realise you have to grab every chance you get. He says that Sinead is his chance and that no matter how long it takes he's there for her. Sinead says that she can't let him do it.

Nick is stressing over his mistake with the wages. Leanne tells him it was an easy mistake that anyone could make but she offers to take on the payroll if it would help. Steph says she couldn't help overhearing and she'd be happy to do it. Problem sorted. For the moment, at least.

Sean brings over a round of drinks to Julie, Emily and Billy to say thank you. Emily mentions that one of the parishioners needs to raise funds for a special piece of medical equipment and wonders if the church could help. Good idea says, Billy. Emily has a suggestion. How about a butler auction? She heard something about it on the television. Billy and Sean struggle to keep a straight face but Billy says he thinks they might get away with it. What's a ‘butler auction' Julie wants to know. Billy and Sean aren't about to explain but Billy suggests perhaps they should also have something a bit less risquι such as a bring and buy sale.

Sharif is watching Kal and Zeedan as they talk to the chickens. He suggests they recite some poetry. Suddenly it dawns on them – Sharif knows what they've been up to. He tells them they don't need to humour him any longer – the chickens will be gone by the end of tomorrow.

Katy's on the phone to her mother. She's making arrangements to leave on Friday. The family express surprise that she's leaving so soon. Owen still doesn't want her to go at all but Katy says if she doesn't go she'll always regret it. She tells Anna she'll always be grateful to her for taking her in as one of her own but she wants to get to know her real mum. "Real mum?!" exclaims Owen. He says that woman coming back into their lives was the worst thing that could have happened to their family. He asks Katy one more time not to go. Izzy tells him bitterly that Katy's going and his grandson's going and that he's got nobody to blame except himself.

Chesney is at home with Joseph lying next to him on the sofa. He tells his sleeping son that even though he won't see him every day he'll be thinking about him and wondering what he's up to. He says that any time Joseph needs to talk to him he'll be there because he's the most precious thing in the world to him and letting him go is the hardest thing he's ever done.

Wednesday 18 March

Chesney and Beth are sitting at Sinead's bedside. Chesney tells her that he's meeting Katy and Joseph in the park later. She isn't happy about the situation with Katy taking Joseph away, and is sure that Chesney wouldn't have made the same decision if she wasn't half paralysed, although he tells her he would.

Sharif is gloomily talking to his hens, telling them they've made him a laughing stock, when David comes out of the house with a bowl full of eggs that Gail found under a bush in her garden. The hens must have been getting though a hole in the fence, much to the amazement of Alya, Kal and Zeedan. Sharif, of course, is delighted and bursts out laughing.

Lloyd and Steve are in the taxi office when Andrea comes in all happy because she's got tickets for 'An Evening of Northern Soul'. Steve thinks that sounds brilliant, but Andrea could only get 2 tickets.

David and Gail are talking about the mediation meetings. He wonders if he's doing the right thing, and Gail tells him that he's doing what is necessary.

Kal and Leanne are in the cafe when she gets a call from Tony, telling her that she and Simon can move back into her flat tomorrow. Kal looks less than delighted and she teases him about missing her.

Kirk arrives at the hospital to see Sinead. She asks him if he thinks Chesney is giving up Joseph because of her. Kirk tells her not to be daft. She asks him if he'll take her outside in a wheelchair for some fresh air. He's doubtful but eventually agrees, so he goes off to find a wheelchair.

David and Gail are in the waiting room, waiting for the mediation session to begin. Callum comes in with his mother, who introduces herself as Marion. Then someone comes out of an office and calls both Callum and David in. "Remember, calm and relaxed,” Gail mutters to David. "That goes double for you,” says Marion to Callum.

Kirk wheels Sinead out of the front door of the hospital. Sinead asks to borrow his phone and promptly calls a taxi and tells Kirk he's taking her home. Kirk is horrified but Sinead reckons that Chesney's making a big mistake and she needs to get home and change his mind. She wants him to see that 'this' (her disability) isn't forever. Kirk refuses and starts to wheel her back inside, but she screams and so he eventually tells her to calm down, he'll take her.

Sinead and Kirk arrive back at home, and he's worried in case Beth catches them. Kirk thought Chesney would be home by now. "I must need my head examining,” he says. He tries ringing Chesney, but they hear his phone ringing – under a cushion on the sofa! She tells him to go and find Chesney at the park where he's taken Joseph. Kirk doesn't want to leave Sinead on her own, but she points out that she's not going to be going anywhere, so he heads off to the park.

Gail and Marion are still in the waiting room and they get chatting. Marion says that she thinks Max is a smashing little lad and he's a real credit to David. Gail says that Max means everything to David, and to her. Marion thinks that she and Gail must therefore be the voices of sanity in all of this.

Sinead has wheeled herself into the kitchen and is trying to reach something from a high shelf. Just then Beth comes in the front door and hears that the radio is on. Then she hears a crash and rushes to the kitchen to find Sinead collapsed on the floor.

Callum is talking to the mediator, and seems to be making a good impression. He tells her that he almost hit rock bottom and then he met Max, and from then on his life had purpose and direction. He says he loves Max to bits, he's only been in his life for a short time but he's realised that Max needs him – and he needs Max.

Kirk, Chesney, Katy and Joseph arrive back at the house to find Sinead being carried out to an ambulance. Chesney can't understand why Sinead was even there, until Beth tells him that Sinead didn't want him to give up Joseph. Chesney gets into the ambulance and goes to the hospital with her.

David is telling the mediator that he knows the home situation is not ideal, but they're making it work. He knows Max needs his mum but he also needs continuity. The mediator then brings the session to a close and arranges another one. Callum is aghast. "You mean we've got to do this again?” He thinks it's an open and shut case but she tells him that mediation doesn't work that way. He starts to get angry. She tells him they're there to talk and hopefully find a compromise solution. Callum reminds her that Max is his biological son, but she tells him that isn't the only issue. "It is to me,” snaps Callum, jumping to his feet. David starts to snipe at him, telling him he ought to control his anger – which only makes him more angry.

Meanwhile, outside the office, Gail and Marion are sitting together doing a crossword puzzle in a magazine, and getting on like a house on fire. Just then the boys come marching out of the office. Callum tells his mother they're out of there and marches off.

Lloyd in in the pub, talking to Michelle and Steve about the Northern Soul evening. Just then Andrea comes in and says she feels ill, she'll have to give the concert a miss. Michelle then suggest that Lloyd takes Steve instead, while Andrea looks downwards and smiles.

Katy, Izzy, Anna and Owen are sitting in the pub. Katy is worried that Sinead's situation is her fault, but Izzy tells her she's not responsible for what Sinead does. She's going because she wants a better life for her and Joseph. They all reassure her that she's doing the best thing.

Leanne and Kal are in the garden feeding the chickens. She then tells him she'd like him to move in with her. He's really pleased.

Steve and Lloyd are walking down the street about to go off to the concert. Steve suddenly stops, and tells Lloyd he's depressed not deluded. He knows things aren't right between them and turns back. "Tell Andrea thanks for caring,” he says as he walks off.

The family come out of the pub and Anna and Katy walk off home. Owen asks Izzy how long she's going to keep him in the doghouse, he can't keep saying he's sorry. She tells him she's glad he's made it up with Katy but it's too soon for her.

Michelle walks into the living room at the Rovers and is surprised to see Steve there. She asks why he's there. "You can't just bail on your best mate,” she says. He tells her Lloyd doesn't feel like his best mate any more. "So fix it,” she says. He tells her he doesn't know how to.

Sinead is back in her hospital bed. She tells him she knows what she did was irresponsible, but he says he doesn't want to talk about it. She tells him to ditch her and fight for Joseph. He tells her he's doing it for Joseph. Katy has the chance of a better future and he wants Joseph to be part of it. He points out that if she and he broke up, and he kept Joseph, he would be alone and hating himself. That's not the sort of father he wants to be. He tells her she's stuck with him, and kisses her. Then he heads off home to say goodbye to Katy and Joseph.

Anne Logan

Friday 20 March

Gail has made Michael's lunch and they discuss rebooking the wedding. Michael happy for any date except the 13th. Gail suddenly spots the obituary page in the paper and there's a death notice for Gavin Rodwell. She puts her hand over it and when Michael wants to take the paper with him to work she suddenly manages to spill her tea over it.

Owen has breakfast with his daughters and they discuss Katy leaving later today. Izzy is still upset and she leaves. A few minutes later, Katy leaves too. Anna comes over to ask Owen if he's OK. He tells her he feels as if he's losing both daughters, not just one.

Katy catches up with Izzy outside. She suggests Izzy cut Owen some slack but Izzy's still upset that he lied to them for so long.

Kevin and Jenny kiss goodbye and Kevin asks what she's doing tonight. Jenny has the whole day off, Kevin gets a call from the childminder telling him she's got chickenpox and can't have Jack. Kevin can't think what to do but then asks Jenny if she'd take him. Jenny seems reluctant but agrees.

In the bistro, an indignant Gail tells Gav-Andy and Steph that she had to steal the newspaper from the cafe and sneak out with it up her shirt like a common thief. "Has my Dad seen this?" asks a horrified Gav-Andy when he sees the big picture of Gavin Rodwell with the notice. Gail says he hasn't. ". . . and he's not your Dad!"

Andrea arrives at the taxi office looking for Lloyd but he's out. Michael invites her in for a cup of tea. Angela flops herself down in the armchair and it falls apart. "Oh, my god! What am I going to do? They love that chair?" she wails.

Gav-Andy's getting his coat. He doesn't care what Leanne says but he can't handle being at work today. Steph tries to tell him he's not the only person struggling with all this but he goes anyway. Katy comes in to say Goodbye to Steph and there's a nice little bit of ribbing each other before they hug.

A taxi stops in the street. The bottle-blonde passenger argues with the driver over the fare. She hasn't got the money to pay for it. Then she says she's only come for her poor dear grandmother's funeral and starts to cry. The driver backs off, tells her she doesn't have to pay and drives away. Gav-Andy goes over to see if she's OK. Of course she is. She wasn't crying at all. He asks if he can help and she says she needs someone to carry her bags. And she's thirsty so he could bring them over to the pub.

In the pub, Gav-Andy tells Michelle that if Leanne asks, Michelle hasn't seen him. He sits down in a booth with the blonde and discovers her gran is fine - she just made up the dead one to get out of paying the taxi fare. But the bit about her having no money was right. Gav-Andy asks how she's going to get on without any money. "I'm doing all right so far," she tells him, raising her glass.

Sharif goes to the cafe and gives Roy a gift of some eggs from his hens. Roy is grateful but Anna's suspicious. She reckons Sharif is up to something.

Gail pulls lots of pink things from the washing machine, followed by David's red tee-shirt. She curses him and is interrupted by someone at the door. It's Barbara Deakin, come give her the sad news about Gavin.

Roy meets Chesney in the corner shop and says he knows how difficult today is for him. Chesney goes off to work. Rita's buying some paracetamol when Jenny and Jack come in. Rita leaves, though Jenny says she shouldn't leave on her account. Jenny explains why she's got Jack and says they're after some sweets. Sophie knows what Jack likes but Jenny argues that he shouldn't have them because he's too young and might get them stuck in his throat. Sophie says he's had them for ages but Jenny insists on taking something different.

Michelle is appalled to hear that Andrea broke the chair. Lloyd comes in and Andrea hustles him out again, saying she's got something to show him.

It seems the blonde woman is a college student in Milan. Gavin manages to mention his girlfriend and the blonde assures him she's just after some company. Oh, and another drink.

Barbara asks Gail what time Michael will be back. Gail says he won't. He's in hospital again and they don't know for how long. Barbara wishes she could have seen him. He needs to know how Gavin died. Yes, he was in a car crash, but that happened because he had a massive heart attack while driving. He had the same condition as Michael.

It seems Michael is as good at fixing things as he is at burglary. Lloyd tells him to go early - it's near enough the end of his shift anyway. Andrea is so sorry she broke the chair. Lloyd tells her not to worry. It's been broken before, by Eileen. Steve fixed it that time.

Sophie talks to Kevin, objecting to Jenny having Jack. Surprisingly, it's Rita who intervenes and tells Sophie Kevin can see who he likes. Kevin thanks her but she says she did it for Sophie, nobody else.

Roy meets Sharif outside the cafe. He says he's got an appointment with the allotment committee later and if they offer him an allotment he's going to take it. He says he'll give Sharif his eggs back. Sharif says they weren't a bribe. They were a gift.

Roy goes to find Chesney in the kebab shop. He tells him he'll regret it if he lets Joseph go without telling him how much he loves him. Chesney doesn't take that much persuading. He sticks his cap on Roy's head and races off.

He's just in time. The whole family is gathered to see off Katy. Doesn't anyone drive their loved ones to the airport? There's a taxi waiting and Chesney has time to tell Joseph he loves him very much while all around him the usual cliches echo (Call when you get there. We're always here if you want to come back. This is it then.). Owen tells Katy he knows he's hurt her but when he looks at Katy and Izzy he knows he's done something right. "I'm proud of you and I love you." Katy gets into the taxi and tells the driver to go to the airport with one stop on the way.

Barbara finally begins to leave. Gail assures her that if Michael can't go to the funeral she'll go herself. A look of horror comes over her face as she spots Michael up at the corner of the street.

The end
Margaret Carr

A quiet week post holiday. Catching up on the happenings at home (including the Corrie backlog of course;-)). We have a Sky + box; for those overseas this is a PVR which also decodes Sky satellite signals. Before we went away the disk was about 65% empty. As it was only a week I was a little surprised that it was 49% empty on return - we need to get it back up to much higher levels before our next break.

This evening the continuing ramifications of Andy's impersonation of Gavin continue to grow and the intricate and extensive web of lies surrounding the Rodwell / Platt hosuehold are starting to reach the point where I cannot remember who has told what to whom. Gail in particular is now at the centre of this ever growing sea of deceit and every inch of the lines on her face showing her growing unease.

This episode was written by Jan McVerry, whilst it was directed by Jo Johnson. Copyright remains the property of ITV to whom many thanks for all of the entertainment they have provided.

We open with Gail seeking to find a way of getting (by physically manhandling) and keeping Aunt Barbara in the house whilst stopping Michael returning from his shift at the cab office. She suddenly remembers the window cleaner is next door and she has to rush out to pay him whilst asking Aunt Barbara writes down the messages which needs to be passed to (the hospital bound) Michael concerning his late son's funeral. Outside she runs towards Michael, who just wants to get home and get his feet up. She almost orders him to the pub on the grounds that the house is untidy because she has been cleaning and needs time to put everything away. He gives in reluctantly when Steph arrives and they go to the Rovers together. Gail says that once she has cleared up the mess indoors she is going to need a stiff drink herself.

In the Rovers the new blonde has necked the first drink Gavin has bought and she says it does not compare to a vodka and cranberry and he falls into the trap and is cornered into buying her one as Steph arrives. The blonde tells Michelle that if cranberry is too exotic she will settle for orange! The blonde wonders how these museums of pubs stay open - after all they do not even have an espresso machine. Broad northern accent - is it true she has come from far away, or even Milan?

Steph is far from amused that the un-named blonde is with Gavin and she hopes the blonde has a return ticket. The blonde asserts that the English sense of humour is over-rated and Gavin asks for the name of one Italian who has made people laugh. Michelle responds with "Mario Balotelli". Gavin reckons he does not count and Michael cites Charlie Cairoli and gives and impression of him - which is totally lost on everyone else at the bar! The blonde seeks to get out paying for the round on the grounds that they do not take euros. This winds Steph up even further. The blonde asserts that she likes it round here and cannot see herself going to the airport in the near future.

Gail is explaining to Aunt Barbara that there is no chance of Michael making the funeral and accepts it is a pity that he and Gavin never had a chance to patch up their differences - but as Gail points out it might push him over the edge. Everyday they are treading on eggshells and facing another hurdle. But if Michael cannot go then Gail will be there in his place. The aunt departs saying she will be in touch. With the door closed Gail collapses in relief.

Joseph is running down the hospital corridor and into Scout ^H^H^H^H^H Sinead's room. She wants a cuddle and Katie arrives behind him. Katie gives Sinead some flexi-tickets for a flight to Faro - she wants them to go out as soon as she is better. And we wave farewell to Katie and Joseph.

At the allotments Roy is surprised to find Sharif at the allotments. It turns out that Sharif was given the ground but he has offered to share with Roy at least until another one becomes free. Roy says it is most generous and he is happy to accept and they shake hands.

Jenny Bradley seems to have fitted right back in and she has been looking after Jack - having gone swimming. Maddie tells a story about being pushed in a pool when she was seven and suddenly a strange look comes over Jenny's face and she asks what happened. Sophie says she obviously drowned by Maddie simply says her attacker fell into the foot pool later. But Jenny continues to look very worried, not laughing at the jokes.

Steve steams into the cab office asking what is the point of allowing Michael back to work and then let him go home when he feels a little off. Lloyd advises him that it is not Michael that needs tlc and steps back to show the completely destroyed chair. Andrea tells the two of them to scrap it. She suggests a new recliner with a back massager. Steve points out that Streetcars without the chair is like salt without vinegar or lager without lime or indeed Ant without Dec. Lloyd starts passing Steve tools and they will need chocolate biscuits - which luckily are in stock as Andrea demonstrates.

The new blonde is telling the pub that she has never met her real father but according to her mother he is a waste of space - but she feels something is missing. Steph is giving her the comprehensive evils! She tries to hold Gavin's hand but Steph soon puts a stop to that. The blonde accuses Steph of having controlling behaviour - it starts out with simply caring and then just gets worse. Steph tells her that the only problem she has got is her and her big gob. Michelle shouts at them to play nicely. Steph and the blonde argue and even start a bit of pushing and pulling when Gail arrives and says "Steph" loudly and they stop. Steph tells Gail that the blonde needs a slap. The blonde throws her arms around Gail and says "Gran". "Don't you friendly face me Bethany Platt" says Gail "what are you doing here?". Methinks that Bethany has some explaining to do.

After the break Gail points out that Bethany has been drinking and that she is 14. Michelle reclaims the glass and tells her to get out now. Gavin has to admit to buying the drink. Michelle wants them out and Gail turns on Bethany and gives her an earful - but even from this distance it looks like water off a duck's back as it makes no impression on Bethany. The latter claims it is a surprise, Gail continues to strop and Bethany does a teenage eye roll. Bethany claims she has come over because she fancies a decent cup of tea - but it is the middle of term and there has been no early warning from Sarah-Louise that Bethany was coming. All very strange.

Jenny is saying that dinner looks more impressive than it is really - just a one pot thing that cooks itself (somehow I think that is not true). Around the table are Kev, Soph, Maddie, Jenny and Jack. Kev gets a phone call from Ty - breakdown call out. He heads out. After some chit chat about the weekend Jenny sees Jack grab an onion off the plate and thinks he has put it in his mouth. She goes into panic mode to get him to spit it out but more calmly Soph checks his mouth and the shallot is in his hand. Jenny says she should have moved the plate away. She is so sorry he could have choked. The girls are not worried but Jenny is beside herself with the possible consequences. Jenny suddenly decides she has to go - and nothing the two girls can say will dissuade her - she is clearly distressed about something which has happened in the past. Choking / drowning - but what? She goes in a hurry. Sophie calls her a weirdo.

At the Platt residence Bethany is explaining that so long as she is not under Sarah-Lou's feet the latter does not mind where she is. Steph delivers a proper cup of tea. Apparently she spends more time in the office than in the flat - the new boss is driving things hard. Bethany feels lonely in the flat and alleges that Sarah-Lou helped pack her bags when she suggested a visit. Bethany turns on the "puppy dog eyes" and says "I want my Nanna". Gail falls for it hook line and sinker. Even Steph thinks it is an Oscar winning performance. David arrives and wants a word with Gail and reminds her about Monday and the reconciliation session. But Gail has forgotten. She is double booked.

At the allotments Sharif is treading on Roy's Maris Pipers. And he is planting sweetcorn which will be shoulder high and block the sun. This is not going well. They continue to bicker gently and Roy asks the woman (Aunty Brenda) about the adjacent plot. That belonged to Mr Matthews and the committee are waiting to hear from his widow.

In the hospital Chesney is now with Sinead who shows him the tickets. Sinead is going to run down the beach to the sea with Chesney and Joseph and she is going to do it this summer. She certainly seems more optimistic.

At the cab office the chair is back in one piece and Steve is allowed to sit in it first. It does not collapse and it is better than new. Andrea offers a drink - but Steve is not drinking so Andrea and Lloyd depart leaving Steve in the chair.

Katie phones Owen - they are just about to board the plane. Owen was hoping that Katie would change her mind. He says Faye has been overlooked this year and she is going to get their full undivided attention.

In the Street Gail updates Gavandy and Steph on the visit from Barbara earlier. The post mortem shows that the real Gavin collapsed at the wheel of the car with a heart attack. The family have had notice to clear out the flat. Andy's name was never on the tenancy. Steph tells him to move into her flat as she has plenty of room. Gail says he will need his suit for funeral on Monday. Despite his protests he has to go.

Kev returns home and is angry because Jenny has gone and Sophie is unable to explain why. Sophie reckons that there is something not right with Jenny. And now she is not answering Kev's call. Kev goes and Sophie asserts that Jenny is the only woman she knows who can start an argument when she is not even in the room!

Gail is on the phone. Turns out that maybe in Milan Sarah Louise has been extremely distressed by her daughter's disappearance. David tells Bethany that she has been busted big time. Gail tells S-L to get a good night's sleep. Once off the phone Gail says that there is only one version of expelled and only version of stealing money from her mother's credit card to pay for the flight. Apparently S-L thought Bethany was on a school trip to Florence - so Bethany is right to assert that S-L had not noticed! Gail is going to book Bethany's return flight and Bethany reels off the flight departure times to Bergamo (which is many kilometres outside Milan - I know I have done the road trip!). 13 25 every day apparently. Bethany says she is not going back. David points out it is his house and he says who stays and who goes. Bethany says she will either sleep on the streets or find a good looking guy to take pity on her. She asks after Gavin. Dail says she will do as she is told. "Gran - you can rant and rail all you like but I am not going back - there is nothing there for me any more!". She flounces off upstairs.

Roll credits.

What have we learned this week?
a) How to spell Charlie Cairoli (CC)
b) That CC did 40 years at Blackpool Tower Circus every summer - a world record at a single venue
c) That Blackpool honoured CC with a statue
d) That Bethany is a pretty strong individual for a 14 year old teenager - with the gift of the gab and the attitude to go with it - but no Italian accent, which is slightly odd.
e) On Monday Gail has to be in two places at the same time.

And I will be back a little later than usual next week as thanks to the football the Friday episode will be set on Sunday evening.

Monday 23 March

Written by Chris Fewtrell Directed by Matt Hilton

Morning at Platt Towers. David's used up all the milk. Bethany complains and Gail won't be too pleased, either. She comes down and is dressed in a black suit with white top under. David notices it's a bit funereal. She pretends she just wants to look smart for the mediation and suggests she not go at all if he's going to be picky about what she's wearing. David quickly backs down. He wants her there because Callum will have his mother there, too. David is anxious the mediation works because he doesn't want to go to court and cautions her about making friends with the enemy, aka Callum's mother. Gail protests they were just being civil to each other. Max asks if he can come but is told he can't because kids can't go.

Maddie and Kevin are talking about Jenny's abrupt departure the other night. Kevin is mystified as to the reason. Maddie assures him she and Sophie were nice to Jenny. Kevin worries that Jenny has gone off him and there has to be more to it than just the shallot incident. He tries to call again and she picks up this time. They make a date to meet up at dinnertime. Sally and Tim come along just then and Sally has no good to say about it. Tim thinks she should give Jenny a break. Sally lists a number of body parts she could cheerfully break and adds that Rita has been quite upset about the whole thing. Kevin insists that Jenny has changed but Sally doesn't believe it.

David and Bethany discuss life in Italy. Weather is mostly better and the food definitely is. Gail assures her that she'll be eating the food soon enough. She's booked on a flight for Sunday. Bethany complains that Sarah is always working. Bethany tries to wheedle her way in, saying she could even work at the Bistro to help support herself. No dice, Gail commands. She's going to be on that flight. Bethany whines. It has no effect. Gail reminds her that Sarah's the boss of Bethany and what she says goes. David notices Gail getting ready to leave and reminds her that the meeting is at 1. Gail promises to be there, just has a few things to take care of. (like Gavin's funeral) She leaves. Beth complains to David about Gail. he explains you have to know how to handle Gail, butter her up a bit. Bethany tries the excuse that's actually David's house and he could agree to her staying. No way, David puts that to rest. He's got enough to deal with so either she persuades Gail or he'll drive her to the airport himself. Big *sigh* as only a 14 year old can.

Craig meets Faye at the bus stop. Faye complains that she's tired and isn't getting much sleep. Craig is so worried about her! People used to die giving birth. Faye doesn't think that happens these days. He points out that's because they get proper help, doctors and everything which she isn't doing. They go quiet as Tim and Maddie come around the corner. Faye is not inclined to even bother to look like nothing's on her mind but isn't about to tell her father. Maddie just puts it down to normal teenage girl stuff and implies to Tim that it's Faye's time of the month. If only! They continue on to the cafe for a butty.

At the church, Gail has met up with Andy and is hoping the service isn't dragged out too long. Andy suggests Gail really didn't have to come but she does feel obligated because she took Michael's chance to know his son away as well as the chance to say goodbye. It's the least she could do. Andy and Gail agree they shouldn't be seen to know each other. Gail then greets Barbara in front of the church. Gail assures her that Michael would have come if he could have. The hearse pulls up and Barbara is overwhelmed with the reality of it all. Gail clearly feels uncomfortable.

Steve is relaxing in the newly repaired chair, extolling it's virtues as one of his favourite places to be. Steve is pleased with his ability. Lloyd reminds him that they both had a hand in fixing it. He then reminds Steve that they have to tackle the accounts. Tomorrow, Steve suggests.

But over the road in the pub, Michelle is going through a shoebox of junk she's found to clear it all out. In it she finds a set of toy chattering teeth. Liz remembers they were a favourite of Steve's when he was younger. Liz hunts for an earring as Michelle rifles through the contents. Liz mentions having had to escape Amy's recorder practice because she was playing the same tune over and over, endlessly, practicing for a recital. Michelle finds a couple of brown envelopes, bills, and opens them. She goes white with shock.

At the church, the service is over and the coffin is being carried out to the cemetery to the sound of the church bells. Barbara pulls Gail over and asks her to come to the wake because Gavin's mother, Susan, wants to speak with her. She had wanted to have a talk with Michael but he's not there so she wants to speak with Gail. Gail reminds Barbara that she has to be somewhere but in the end, all the guilt buttons are pushed and Gail reluctantly agrees to a short stop.

At the mediation office, David is restless. Callum trades barbs with him. His mother tries to soothe things but Callum pokes sticks at David for his mother not being there.

In the cafe, Sally has come in for a bacon butty and makes a bit of an underhanded insult at Anna for managing not to gain weight working around so much food. She sees Jenny at a table and approaches with a few snide comments about upsetting Rita. Jenny states she didn't come back for that. Kevin arrives at the end of Sally's snarky comments and she leaves. He brushes Sally's attitude off and says people will move on to someone else soon enough. She apologizes for leaving the other day while he was gone on a call and assures him it wasn't anything he did. She declines to elaborate and says she doesn't think they should see each other anymore.

Michelle is clearly preoccupied and looking worried. Steve, Lloyd and Andrea come in. Andrea tells Michelle that Steve did an airport run, a very normal trip with no obsessiveness. Steve is pleased with himself and Michelle is as well. Steve is feeling quite good and a bit frisky. Liz comes in and hears the news and is pleased as well. Liz notices Michelle looking upset but thinks it's about Steve though points out Steve is getting back to normal. That's half the problem, she whispers.

In the cafe, Jenny is trying to persuade Kevin that their relationship just isn't going to work in the face of all the opposition. Kevin makes an impassioned plea but she really isn't inclined. He wants a chance to sort it out, give him a chance. He pleads for her to meet him tonight for a drink and if she still feels like that, she can walk away. She reluctantly agrees.

At the wake, Gail is whispering to Andy that she really has to go. She hasn't spoken to Gavin's mother, Susan, yet but she really has to get going. Barbara and Susan come up and Susan is introduced. A few condolences are given. Susan explains she never did have any other children. Barbara and Andy leave them to it.

David is still trying to get the session delayed while waiting for Gail. This time, Callum's mother seems to be included in the session as would Gail, one assumes. David is on edge and already making pointed remarks as to Callum's business. The mediator can't delay as she has another appointment and when David suggests they reschedule, Callum objects. He feels David's messing them around and they should just forget it altogether if that's the case. David doesn't want it to go to court so agrees to go ahead. The session begins, hopefully in a more constructive manner. Callum apologizes for losing his temper last time, prompted by his mother. Everything Callum or his mother say has David making rude remarks, even though the mediator chides him.

Michelle shows Liz the letters, tax bills from the Government Revenue department totaling over 10 thousand pounds. She doesn't know how they can raise that. She says the letters were unopened and Steve must have put them in the box to ignore them. Michelle worries that Steve is getting better and can't see how she can drop this news on him.

Kevin comes into the Kabin to talk to Rita. Unfortunately, Norris is there and throughout the conversation, adds his own interfering, judgmental remarks into what is clearly none of his business. Kevin insists on talking to her even though she doesn't want to hear it.

Back at the wake, Susan still has Gail in a corner. She asks after Michael's health. Susan makes a remark to the effect that she shouldn't be surprised he ditched the funeral but Gail insists Michael would have been there if he could. Susan apologizes. She admits that when they split up, she purposely made Gavin hate his father. She now wants to make her peace with Michael, realizing that grudges are pointless. (A bit late for that, and she knows it) Gail says she'll pass on the message but panics when Susan says she wants to talk to Michael, fill him in on the lost years and what Gavin was like.

Callum tells the mediator that he kept his distance at first but now wants to do right by his kid. David suggests the best way would be to get lost. He is scolded. Callum then tells big lies about the bad marraige that David and Kylie had, the rows and then the drugs. he even has the nerve to say he tried to help Kylie get off the drugs! All this riles David further. He shouts that Callum is the one that gave her the drugs in the first place but of course Callum denies it and looks very pleased that David has lost his cool completely.

At the mediation session, Callum is keeping up the pretence of being the perfect reformed character while David does himself no favours and continues to scowl. The mediator is all for calling it a day when Callum's mum makes a suggestion. Why don't the two men spend some time with Max together? The mediator thinks it's a great idea and Callum is quite happy to oblige. David seems beyond caring and scowls some more.

Meanwhile at Gavin's wake, Michael's ex-wife is pleading with Gail to let her see him. She can't understand why he wouldn't want to be in touch when he was so desperate to do so before Gavin died and she really wants to put things right between them. Gail tells her that Michael was also hurt by their marriage break-up and she doesn't want to do anything to upset him in his current condition. Gail promises to talk to Michael and then catches Andy's eye from across the room.

Kevin is in the Kabin pleading with Rita on behalf of Jenny. He tells her that Jenny wants to split up with him because of the way Rita feels about her being around. Ignoring Norris's constant interruptions Rita tells Kevin that if that's what he really wants she won't stand in his way.

Amy is practising her recorder. It's so painful to listen to that Liz resorts to bribing her with some money to go off and buy some sweets. After Amy's gone Michelle comes in for a word. Liz says that Steve's tax bill does seem very high. She wonders if there could have been some sort of mistake and offers to have a word with the tax office.

Craig's borrowed a book from the library on giving birth. He tries to give it to Faye but she says she knows it's going to be horrible so she doesn't need a book to tell her. Craig tells her she needs to make all sorts of decisions like where she's going to give birth. At that moment Anna comes along and invites them to go for a drink in the cafι. Craig makes his excuses but before he goes he manages to hand over the book to Faye who stuffs it in her school bag.

Jenny goes over to see Kevin in the garage and tell him she hasn't change her mind. Kevin admits that he went to speak to Rita on her behalf. Jenny says he shouldn't have done it but Kevin asks why not. After all, he says, it's the truth. Jenny looks awkward.

Andy and Gail arrive back from the funeral. Steph comes along and asks how it went. Gail says it's up there with one of the worst experiences of her life. "And believe me,” she adds, "it's got some competition.” At that moment, David comes storming round the corner, wanting to know where Gail's been. He tells her that he could lose Max thanks to her not turning up at the mediation session. Gail doesn't know what to say so Andy steps in and says it was his fault. David asks why so Andy buys himself time to make up an excuse by suggesting they should go inside and talk.

In the Rovers Liz tells Michelle it's not good news. She's spoken to the tax office and the bill is correct. She tells Michelle the problem isn't going to go away. If they don't make plans they could lose the pub so she says Michelle has got to talk to Steve.

In the time it took to get indoors Andy's come up with a story to explain Gail's absence from the mediation. He tells David he had a funny turn, thought it was his heart, Gail took him to hospital but it turned out to be nothing more than a panic attack. Just then Michael arrives home in high spirits. Gail manages to whisper to David not to mention anything about "Gavin's” funny turn in case it gives Michael one of his own.

Kevin and Jenny are in the Rovers. She's not sure he should have spoken to Rita. In fact she's not sure about their relationship altogether. Kevin persuades her to go and have her tea with him and Jack, if only so she can say a proper goodbye if she does decide to call it quits. Just as they're leaving, Rita comes in with Norris. Jenny tries to thank her but Rita can't bring herself to reply. Norris tells Rita that now she's given the green light to Jenny and Kevin's relationship they'll be in the Rovers every night. Rita isn't too concerned and says that at one time she thought a lot of Jenny. She tells Norris that she can't quite put her finger on it but she thinks Jenny seems different and reckons life hasn't been very kind to her.

In the next door booth Lloyd and Andrea are telling Michelle that they've planned an Easter Break away and ask what she and Steve are up to. Michelle says nothing much and Lloyd picks up that something's wrong. Michelle admits they're in real trouble and says she doesn't know how they're going to get out of it.

Round at the Platts' Michael is asking all about the mediation, blissfully unaware of what's been going on. A slamming door heralds the arrival of Bethany. She's been shopping thanks to £20 she's managed to borrow off Uncle Nick and spent it on a top that's more holes than fabric. Gail says she's not going out in that. David asks them to stop rowing. Andy and Steph wisely decide it's time to leave and Michael suggests they all go to the Rovers. Gail doesn't fancy it so Bethany, who's picked up the hint from David, says she'll stay in with Gail and have a girls' night in. She tells her gran that she can give her some fashion tips.

Anna is alone in the cafι with Faye. They sit down for a chat and Anna asks if Faye's OK. She says Faye always seems tired at the moment and says even her dad's noticed something seems to be wrong. Faye finally has the ideal opportunity to confess all but she just can't do it and makes out she's just upset about Katy going. Anna tells her that Katy made a big mistake having a baby so young but at least now she's finally getting her life back. Faye looks at her ruefully as Anna adds that not many girls in her situation get that opportunity.

Bethany's doing her best to butter up her gran and she starts by bringing her a large glass of wine. Gail looks shocked when Bethany tells her that back in Italy her mum lets her drink wine all the time. She says she lets her get away with murder and just wants to be Bethany's mate. Bethany declares that what she needs is authority and ground rules like Gail has given her. If only she was allowed to stay … Gail laughs and says Bethany must think she was born yesterday. If she wants authority, adds Gail, she can start by going to bed now. Bethany instantly loses her charming demeanor and scowls that she helped herself to a large glass of wine while she was in the kitchen and then stomps off up to bed.

Lloyd and Andrea are discussing the tax situation by the bar with Liz and Michelle. Lloyd's worried it could affect Street Cars. Michelle tells him he should be more concerned about his best mate. Just then Steve comes in. He appears in a very upbeat mood then stops in his tracks when he sees everyone else's glum faces.

Round at Kevin's Jenny is helping Jack do a jigsaw. Kevin tells her she's a natural with kids. He wants her to stay. She seems to want it too but something is stopping her. Finally Jenny agrees that she'll keep seeing Kevin and then, to his delight, asks if she can take Jack up and put him to bed.

Michael arrives home with a bag of fish and chips. It's all too much for Gail. They're bad for his health and so is his drinking. Michael protests that a chip butty and a couple of shandys aren't going to kill him. But Gail is wound up with the stress of all the lies and she goes on and on at him. Michael tells her she's being ridiculous. Gail starts to sob and Michel comforts her. He tells her that it matters just as much to him. If he goes he'll lose her too, it cuts both ways. "What's this about, Gail?” asks Michael. But of course she can't tell him and replies through her tears that she just needs to be on her own for a bit. Michael hands her the packet of chips before walking out.

Michelle is showing Steve the tax letters. He admits that he just couldn't face all those brown envelopes so he put them away and then he managed to forget about them. Michelle tells Steve it's not his fault but he says he can't believe he's done this to her. She tells Steve it wasn't him who did this, he wasn't in his right mind. "Well I am now,” says Steve determinedly. Michelle says they'll find a way out of this together but Steve replies that it's his mess and he'll sort it. He tells her not to worry he's fine and he can handle it.

Wednesday 25 March

Michelle comes down in her pyjamas and finds Steve sitting in the bar. He couldn't sleep and has been going through the finances. She tells him not to worry, they'll work it out, and he replies that he feels surprisingly calm about it all, it must be the tablets he's on.

Michael is telling Gail that he just felt like having a few drinks and letting his hair down. She's worried about his health and asks him to promise not to touch another drop. He gets cross. "What is wrong with you?” he shouts, and storms out. Gail then turns her attention to Bethany who is on the sofa in her dressing gown. She tells her to get dressed, she's off to work and she's taking Bethany with her, she's not having her lazing around all day. "But I'm on holiday!” wails Bethany.

Liz comes down into the bar. Steve is still being calm about the money owed to Inland Revenue. Liz points out that if he goes bankrupt she and Michelle get dragged down with him.

Faye is in the cafe with Craig, getting the key to the flat from Anna. Sally and Tim are there too, and, in the course of conversation Tim mentions that Dev's flat is empty. Faye and Craig exchange glances.

Just then Sean comes in asking if he can put up posters for the Butler Auction they're having on Sunday. He explains that they're trying to raise money for a poorly little girl, and suggest to Sally that she could put Tim up for auction. "Who'd pay for him?” she scoffs, "he's bone idle!”

Outside, Faye tells Craig that she now knows where she can have the baby. He's worried and says she needs to be in a hospital. She says they'll check it out after school. He says he's got a bad feeling about it.

Gail and Bethany are walking across the Street. Bethany tells Gail that although she likes books, school in Milan was rubbish. The teachers didn't care whether she was there or not. As they arrive at the bistro, Audrey comes out, and she's delighted to see Bethany, so Bethany wastes no time in asking if she can come to work at the salon – it's a better option than washing up in the bistro.

Steve arrives at the taxi office with a pack of about 50 toilet rolls. They were on special offer. He and Lloyd discuss Steve's tax bill, and Steve assures Lloyd that it is just for the pub, the taxi office is fine, running at a profit. Lloyd remarks that Steve seems remarkably calm about it. Steve tells him it's the medication, and then wonders if he could sell an organ. "Have you got one?” asks Lloyd. "A vital, not a Hammond,” says Steve.

Sean and Billy are in the pub, discussing the butler auction. At the moment they have no butlers. Sean tells him he asked around the factory, but there were no takers. They then both state that they want to be the auctioneer. In the end Billy says that if Sean can recruit one person from the pub, then he can be the auctioneer.

In the salon, Bethany is about to start sweeping up when she spots Audrey's copy of Anna Karenina, and asks if her great grandmother is a fan of Russian literature. Audrey confesses that she's had it ages and is only on page 4. Bethany tells her it's worth sticking at, and then says how she's wrote an essay on it, and seen the films. Audrey and Maria are amazed.

Steve and Lloyd are still chatting. Steve says how he loves Michelle to bits, he's put her through so much and she's still there for him. Lloyd urges him to tell her. Then he goes on to talk about a firm called Coopers. They lost the contract, but Lloyd thinks there might be a way to win it back, and he's jotted down a quick proposal. He hands Steve a card with notes on. "Proposal? Yeah, that's what I need to do, good thinking,” says Steve. Then he sighs and says he's worried he'll screw it up. "Do you want me to do it?” asks Lloyd, but Steve says it's his mess and he needs to sort it. (Are these two talking about the same thing?) "There's nothing to be scared of,” says Lloyd, "just get over there and work your magic.” Steve smiles and tells Lloyd he's right. Then, handing back the piece of card, he goes off out of the door, leaving Lloyd looking puzzled.

Sean and Billy are trying to persuade Sharif and Kal to put themselves up as butlers for the auction. In the end Kal says he'll do it if Sharif does it. "Ok,” sighs Sharif, "but don't go telling your mum.”

Over in the salon, Bethany is outlining the plot of Anna Karenina to Audrey. At least, up to the end of part 1. "How many parts are there?” asks Maria. Bethany tells her there are 8, but they're good. Audrey comments that Bethany is very well read for someone who has spent their life bunking off. Bethany says how she hates the school there, she gets picked on. They ask if her mum knows, but Bethany says Sarah is far too busy to care about her. They've been there 7 years and she still doesn't feel like she belongs.

Liz and Michelle are chatting in the back room when Tony comes in and realises that there's a problem. Liz tells Michelle he'll have to know, they tell each other everything.

Faye tells Craig to get the key to the flat above Dev's shop. She tells him it's kept under the counter, she knows because her dad got locked out once when he lived there. She tells him to go in the shop, buy something, distract Sophie and get the key. "I can't!” says Craig, but she stares at him so, sighing, he walks towards the door.

Liz and Michelle are telling Tony about the income tax bill. Tony says he thinks he can help. He sold the house the bought for Jason and Eva to cash buyers, he gets the money next week. Michelle protests that they can't take his money. "Can't we?” asks Liz. Tony says they can call it a loan, and Michelle eventually agrees to that, promising to pay back every penny.

Craig comes out of the shop, but although he's bought nuts he didn't get the key. He's not sure how he's supposed to distract Sophie. Faye hustles him back across the road and pushes him back into the shop. While he's asking for more nuts, Faye sticks her head round the door and tells Sophie she thinks someone just took some flowers. Sophie rushes out and while she's gone Craig leans over the counter and gets the key.

Michelle is in the back room of the Rovers when Steve comes in with the large pack of toilet rolls, and seems a bit agitated. She asks if he's ok, she doesn't want him worrying. He then starts to try to talk to her, keeps stopping and starting, and then eventually asks her to marry him! She says of course she will, it's what she's always wanted, so he makes her a ring out of toilet tissue!

Michael arrives back at Gail's house, and then Audrey and Bethany come in. Audrey tells Gail how unhappy Bethany is in Milan. "Tough," says Gail.

Faye and Craig have let themselves into the flat above Dev's shop. It's cold, dirty and full of stock. Craig says he can't let her have the baby in there.

Kevin and Jenny go into the pub, where Tim and Sally are already at the bar. Sean and Billy come in, and look around for potential butlers.

Michelle and Steve come into the bar and Lloyd wonders why Michelle has tissue around her finger. "Have you cut yourself?” he asks. Michelle says they couldn't afford a rock. Steve then tells everyone that he proposed and she said yes! Tony looks surprised. "Expensive things, weddings,” he mutters.

Audrey is still battling on Bethany's behalf. Gail points out that it is not their decision anyway. Audrey says they should talk to Sarah. Gail says she has already spoken to her earlier and she wants Bethany home and the flight is booked. Bethany leaves on Sunday.

The champagne is flowing in the pub, and Jenny persuades Kevin to be a butler for the say and says she'll pay.

Quietly, Liz asks Michelle if she's happy. She says she is....but she's a bit worried about the timing of all this. "I shouldn't be thinking like that, should I?” she says, "I should just be happy.”

Sunday 29 March

Hello, it's Sunday yet the vicar is in the Rovers' bar leisurely discussing plans for the butler auction. No, I don't know why he isn't rushing from church to church trying to cope with three parishes at once like all the other vicars. With Liz and Michelle, Billy and Sean discuss the kind of hot totty that's going to be on offer at the auction. Liz not-so-secretly hopes for Gavin and Michelle wouldn't mind bidding for Luke. Liz brings the tone right down with her comment about Jason doing her skirting boards! They discuss the engagement and we hear that Carla's sent her congratulations from LA.

There's butler service just up the road as Bethany lounges on the sofa and Gail waits on her. Beth tells her she's pretty much packed. Max and David come in from the back yard and announce that it's snowing. Max is going to see his "real dad" today. Nick arrives and mentions Bethany's flight home and she gets very snippy. When she stomps off, Nick comments that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. "Do you think it's too early for a glass of wine?" asks Gail.

The script said Craig and Fay sit outdoors so that's what they're doing, snow on shooting day or not! They're discussing the suitability of the flat as Fay's birthing unit. Tim and Sally walk past and Tim asks them what they're plotting. Nothing, they say. Tim invites them to go to the cinema with Sally and him but they refuse. Tim tells Sally that Craig and Fay are up to something. She says it'll be something and nothing. Craig tells Fay he wants to help as much as he can but if she insists of giving birth in the flat then he has one condition.

We don't hear what it is because we move swiftly over to the taxi office, where Steve tells Lloyd he thinks Michelle just agreed to marry him out of pity. Lloyd agrees that Steve's timing might be off. After all, a symptom of depression is making rash decisions and he is faced with that big tax bill. Steve decided to go for a walk.

The Nazir men discuss the butler auction. Sharif is all for going "smart casual" but even Zeedan thinks formal suits might be the way to go.

David and Max, meanwhile, are at Langworthy Park (ironically, this is the park from which the famous lines of chimney pots were filmed for the opening credits of the show in the 1960s) to meet Callum. He's there already with a football.

Nick is trying to get Bethany and her luggage into the car for the trip to the airport. She tries to tell him she's left her phone charger inside but he's already seen it in her hand luggage. As soon as he turns his back, though, she grabs the car keys, throws them into the garden and legs it. A surprised Todd sees her and asks Nick what Bethany is doing back here. "Driving us all mad!" says Nick.

Sean cuts up the pub's bunting. Who needs "Congratulations" or "Happy Birthday" bunting when you can have "Butler Auction." Though the first of these now says "ONGATATIS" as Liz points out. "It sounds like a gum disease." Billy promises her they will replace the bunting. Sean says that it's all in aid of a good cause, a very sick little girl.

Beth's at the bar telling everyone Kirk won't be in the auction. She's not pimping out her husband. They go home to cook a roast dinner. Andrea asks Michelle if she can see the ring and is a bit disappointed by the tissue-paper replica. Steve makes the excuse that they can't afford a ring just yet and Michelle adds that they'll be having a long engagement so there's plenty of time. That seems to upset Steve and he leaves the bar. Liz tells Michelle to go after him. Liz tells Tony that if they reveal Tony's paying Steve's tax bill, it might cheer him up. But Tony says everything isn't finalised yet and he doesn't want to get Steve's hopes up.

Michelle tells Steve he doesn't look like someone who is over the moon about getting engaged. Steve can't understand why Michelle has agreed to marry him. He's done so much wrong in the past year. He doesn't know why Lloyd is still talking to him. Michelle says Lloyd loves him, just as they all do. This doesn't convince Steve. His self esteem is so low he thinks he's not good enough for Michelle and she'd be better off without him. He loves her too much to let her saddle herself with him. He wants to go back to the way they were and breaks off the engagement. He walks out, leaving Michelle in tears.

Craig and Fay talk about the looming birth while Beth and Kirk cook dinner and argue over whether Goofy is a dog or a horse. When they get the chance, they snaffle a bag of potatoes from the kitchen because they weigh about the same as a baby.

Andrea goes back to find Michelle and hears what Steve has said. She tells Michelle she can't tiptoe round this in case it gives Steve a relapse - she should decide what she wants and go after it.

David and Callum play football (the soccer kind) with Max, though it seems David's been nominated to be in goal. Callum says his father was semi-pro and football skills are in the genes. The ball almost hits two women walking past and Callum tells them Max loves playing with his dads. They make the assumption that the men are gay partners and Callum plays to this by putting his arm around David and telling them they want a little girl next.

Tracy's annoyed that Todd hasn't finished the stocktaking on his day off. Todd retaliates by pointing out to her that a new shop, part of a chain of secondhand dealerships, is opening up in Tile Street. Todd manages to slip in the information that Tony has sold the house he bought for Eva and Jason. You'd think he'd been expanding the shop or looking for somewhere bigger. The house sale is news to Tracy and she sweeps out of the shop again.

Nick's on the phone to Gail explaining he's lost Bethany and dissuading her from calling the police. Behind him, she slips into Barlow's Buys and meets Todd.

Nick stops Craig and Fay to ask whether they've seen Bethany. They haven't, but Todd brings her out of the shop. "Traitor!" snaps Bethany.

Lloyd and Andrea discuss Steve breaking off the engagement. Lloyd confesses to what he said earlier on to Steve and tells Andrea what Steve said about Michelle agreeing out of pity.

Steve is on a seat in, you guessed it, Langworthy Park. He's on the phone to his therapist.

Max wants to go for pizza with Callum but David rules that out. Surprisingly, Callum tells Max he has to obey David. "I hate you!" Max tells David in the time-honoured way.

Leanne sees Steve on the bench, stops to say Hello and they get talking.

Craig's at the bus stop with a holdall which contains the potatoes. He's distracted by Todd calling out to him that there's a reduced bus service on Sundays. Unluckily, that distraction is all it takes for someone to snatch the bag. Luckily, the lad drops it as he makes his escape. Unluckily, the bus runs it over!

Tracy comes back to the shop all tarted up and in a different mood. She even lets Todd go home early.

Leanne is still trying to talk to Steve. Why did he propose in the first place? He tells her he wanted to see Michelle smiling again. And to make up for what he'd put her through in the past year. And because he loves Michelle. But he's pretty sure Michelle only said yes out of pity. Leanne explains that the mood swings are part of his mental condition. But she reckons Michelle probably feels just as badly as Steve does. She urges Steve to talk to Michelle. She says it's the worst thing in the world when your partner goes out and you don't know where he is and worry he's under a bus. If he doesn't face this he's going to regret it for the rest of his life.

The end of the first half. More later.j

Due no doubt to the need to show a highly important football match on Friday evening Corrie was shunted to Sunday and played as a single episode rather than two separate halves. Interestingly those on screen knew that the events were taking place on Sunday so this was included in the planning, setting and writing of the episode.

Anyway over to Weatherfield where happenings this evening, after the second break were written by Damon Rochefort and directed by John Anderson whilst the copyright remains the property of ITV to whom many thanks.

So after the second break we resume with the preparations for the Butlers' Auction at the Rovers. Sean assures Emily he will keep it almost clean. Meanwhile Andrea is reporting that Steve thinks Michelle does not want to marry him - and vice versa. Michelle promises to take charge of the situation.

Craig returns without any films as his mate was out. Kirk suggests Rosemary's Baby. Craig has to tell Faye that it all went wrong.

At the Platts Bethany is made to speak to Sarah-Louise - so she grabs the phone from Gail and says "Dispetosa" which apparently means "spiteful" and then storms back upstairs. Meanwhile David tells Max to stop behaving like a child when he asks to go and have a pizza with his dad - but Max observes he is a child! Once Gail has found out what it means she tells Bethany that language is unacceptable in this house - to the sound of the bedroom door being slammed. David gives Max his dinner and asks what he says. Max says he wants pizza!!! Gail gives S-L a telling off - the latter obviously puts the phone down! From upstairs comes the loud music and Nick departs - with the words "See ya, wouldn't to be ya". Gail responds to Max leaving the table by telling him to eat it. Gail wants a peaceful Sunday so puts her coat on and goes leaving David to deal with the teenager. Gail is off to the auction in the hope that she can bid for a whole new family.

Back at the Rovers the various butlers are turning up - Sharif is so smart he may need to be renamed Omar Sharif [how long have the writers been waiting to drop that one in?]. Ty says he only changed out of his overalls because he had gravy down the back - how come asks Tim? Ty likes gravy! Andrea arrives from the back and asks Liz for more candles - but Michelle has already had two boxes - what is she doing in there - arranging a satanic mass? The ladies from the church at the bar with Emily raise their eyebrows and Liz apologises for the turn of phrase. Liz is short handed and Andrea is talked into helping behind the bar. Steve arrives and Lloyd distracts him to the bistro. Tony says he wants to pop out because an alarm is going off. Jenny wants some more drinks and Sal says she and Tim will get their own. Jenny points out she was not offering! Andrea lets Michelle know that Steve will be about an hour.

Time for another break after which we find that Tony is at the Barlow shop where Tracy has been tarting up her makeup. She offers him a kiss from the "Easter Bunny". Tony says he needs to be in the pub but Tracy works on him to the back room.

Liz wants to tan Tony's backside - and Emily asks if the language could be modified please? Andrea then asks Norris if he is to be auctioned and he responds that this is a pub not the "Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" to which Mary introduces Emily's friends from the church - so he has to apologise as well! Mary seeks to explain that he was referring to a Dolly Parton film. When he says he is Norris the ladies star laughing. Liz wants Michelle to do some serving because "God only knows where Tony is" and then realises what she has said and the ladies get another apology!

Sean starts the auction. Sharif is up first with Kal. After observing they have good hair and teeth Mary offers £20 for the two. Emily - £25, Mary £30 - Emily £35, Mary £40. Zeedan shouts £100 and gets the two - Yasmeen has been bidding by phone and wants the gutters doing and has a long list of other jobs! Liz observes that she is right behind Yasmeen as she would not want another woman getting her hands on her man.

Tracy and Tony emerge from the back room, the latter adjusting his clothes. He has to get back. Tracy tells him about the new place opening up which will put them out of business. Tracy tells a fantasy story about her grandmother's bakery being closed down by a mini-mart - and even Tony knows when she is in la la land!! He knows about Blanche! Anyway Tracy wants somewhere bigger and Tony spots that Todd has let on about the house being sold. Tracy eventually admits it. Tony has to go - but he will think about it. And they do not want to go the same way as old Ma Langton's bakery. Tracy smiles.

Steve and Lloyd are drinking in the Bistro and Lloyd decides it is time for Steve to face the music.

At the auction Kev is sold to Maggie - one of the church ladies. her car needs a service. The other church lady wants to get Ty for the same reason!. Maggie and Celia are keen "Carry On" fans and reckon that Sean looks like a young Ken Williams. Tony returns "Thank Go.... Heavens" says Liz. Sophie is the next butler - but she has a tummy bug. Jenny suggests that Sally should stand in for her. Everyone calls her name.

Steve approaches and Lloyd says he just needs to talk to Michelle. Inside Steve walks up to Michelle - they need to chat she says and Steve assents. He wants a pint first. She goes through to the back. Liz says he needs to sort this out. He thinks he has really messed things up this time.

Back inside Jenny bids £30 for Sal. Norris - £40, he wants his hob cleaned. Gail - £50 - she can do her cleaning and Gail gets a day off. Jenny - £60. Sal asks Tim to bid - but he is completely skint, sorry. He then goes to the bar and asks for three pints, two white wines and a pack of pork scratchings. £70 says Norris. Maggie says to Emily that she thought she said he was a penny pincher. Emily denies it. Apparently Norris can squeeze a pound coin so tight the Queen's eyes bleed according to Celia were Emily's words. Annoyed Norris turns round and bids £100 (against himself). And Sal is sold!

In the back Steve sees Michelle's romantic preparations and knows he is in the wrong place. He storms out front to abuse Tony, thinking he has arranged it for Liz as some form of Parisian knocking shop. Michelle shouts at Steve. The she grabs the microphone from Sean and says over the pa that Tony did not do that to the back room. She did - for them. He goes over to her on the stage and she says she knows he has been through a difficult time - but he is not on his own. She accepted the proposal because she loves him. She calls him an idiot - but he is her idiot. With the entire pub watching, and Leanne suddenly appears from nowhere - and Sal telling everyone to shush - Michelle can say that the most important thing is that no matter what happens they are therefor each other. She silences Steve - "Steve MacDonald - you are the only bloke that can make me laugh and I mean really laugh, often not on purpose I grant you, you're kind, you're generous and you are mine." She drops down and still holding his hands "Will you marry me". Steve has a huge smile on his face as there is a huge "Ahh" around the pub (mainly from the females and we see Mary put her hand on Norris' arm). Steve responds "What no ring?". "Of course I will marry you". She leaps up into his arms and they kiss. Leanne says to Lloyd that she likes happy endings and it makes a nice change. Lloyd kisses Andrea. Steve is saying that he does not deserve Michelle and she tells him to never say that again. And they kiss again. And again.

Roll credits.

Aspects of Corrie are definitely positive at the moment. Steve's descent was well handled; I am less certain about his recovery. The introduction of Bethany appears a masterpiece so far; although I cannot work out where they all sleep. Once Kylie returns I fear for David's sanity surrounded by all those women. Tony should be told that Tracy is a killer - even if released. Missing Deirdre and her stuffed marrow.

The writing in this episode - especially the "naughty" bits and the one liners (particularly from Max) were all beautifully done. In these written diatribes it is impossible to convey the looks, the interplay and the cross cutting (such as from Liz's comments about other women having their hands on her man and the next scene being Tracy manhandling Tony). This was good.

Monday 30 March

Written by Simon Crowther Directed by Judith Dine

Amy is *still* practicing her song on the recorder and you'd think after all this practice she might be a bit better. Tracy's ears have had enough and she distracts Amy from playing by praising her and asking her details about the concert. That lasts about 2 minutes and the dulcet tones of the recorder are wafting through the air again. Oh dear.

Liz can still hear the recorder song, too, and isn't really looking forward to the recital though she will go to support her granddaughter. Tony reminds her it will all be over after today! Tony wishes her luck and tries to get out of attending, citing an appointment dealing with the money from the house sale but that's a no-go. She insists. Steve and Michelle arrive. Steve has a photo of somewhere local at night that almost looks like New York. (but probably doesn't). The point of the scene is that Michelle wistfully wishes she could go to New York but it's expensive. Steve agrees and reckons they will be going to that local spot after all. Tony looks uncomfortable.

Bethany is less than impressed with the Weatherfield breakfast of cold cereal. She tells David and Michael she usually has a pastry or a cornetto. There's a bit of confusion there because she's talking about croissants and they think it's an ice cream. Gail comes downstairs and tells Bethany she can put in some time at the Bistro. For free. Peeling veg. Bethany wonders why David seems so happy to be a hairdresser. He doesn't seem the type. Gail scolds her for being rude but she rightly points out that he put drugs in her doll when she was little and she thinks that gives her free reign to say what she likes. David has nothing to add to that one.

Craig and Faye are discussing their plans outside in front of the cafe. His attempt at the dry run with the potatoes went disastrously wrong. He really thinks her plan is not going to work and she's upset. She asks him to keep the flat key but they scuffle just as Tim comes round the corner. They cover and say everything is ok. Tim looks at them suspiciously.

Sharif takes delivery of a large box. It's a plant pot for his allotment. Simon and Zeedan come along. Sharif asks them both to come to the allotment later in the afternoon to help him to earn a bit of pocket money.

Sally rings Norris' doorbell to do her day as his butler for charity. He tells her she's late and presents her with a long and detailed list of things she's to do. He's staying off work to supervise.

Michelle looks a bit glum, thinking about the taxes and looking longingly at wedding dresses online. Liz brings out tea and says that Tony is talking to his solicitor. Michelle wishes they didn't have to rely on Tony's loan and doesn't think Steve will be too happy about it. No choice, though. Tony comes out and says the money has been released and he'll transfer the money. Michelle gives him a kiss on the cheek.

Michael thinks he'd like to buy a quilted plaid/checked shirt and a trucker's hat. He wants to change his image. Gail realizes he's been watching Deer Hunter again and it's giving him ideas. He thinks his current fashion statement is too home-ly, he wants to look like a man's man. He think thinks he and Gavin could go hunting for a bit of male bonding. Gail can't understand. He doesn't hunt! Audrey pops in for David's iPod so they can try out their new Bluetooth speakers. Gail invites her for tea tonight for bangers and mash. Bethany comes downstairs to head to the Bistro. She's dressed in a pretty frock and looks far too nice to be peeling spuds but she wants to make a good impression. Gail insists she take her makeup off but Bethany just waves her off and leaves.

Tony's in the shop and Tracy chats excitedly about expanding the business. He lies and says the house money hasn't come in yet but promises it will come her way when it does. She chats about her business plans while flashing some thigh, which he seems to appreciate.

Gail has bought a bunch of flowers at Dev's. David sees her and questions it. She says they're for her since nobody else will buy them for her. She asks how the new speakers are but is dismayed to hear that one was damaged in transit. They go off in opposite directions. Gail takes the flowers across the road, looks back to see if David's watching.

Liz and Tony are getting ready to go to the recital. Michelle asks them to save seats because Steve isn't back yet. They agree and get off. Outside, Liz and Tony see Ken and Tracy about to get in the car. Ken invites them to drive together with them and he insists. Tracy tries to finagle it so that she's sharing the back seat with Tony but Ken insists that Tony is taller than the women and should have the front seat. Tony agrees and Tracy scowls, having to share the back with Liz. They all get in and belt up. Away we go!

Steve arrives back from the cash and carry. Michelle wants to talk to Steve before they go. He gasps, drops the box of crisps and wonders if she's pregnant! No, she laughs. But she tells him that Tony is loaning the money to pay off the tax bill and she's already sent the money off. He's a bit taken aback and you can see he is a bit let down by it but knows he really doesn't have a choice. He quietly agrees with Michelle.

Zeedan has nothing good to say about the type of person that finds pleasure in allotments as he and Simon gather up gardening instruments. Sharif has told them where to plant his seeds and points out the dividing lines between his and Roy's side. Zeedan insists he knows what he's been told. Sharif leaves them to it and Zeedan immediately heads inside the little shed and leaves Simon to do all the work.

At the school, Tracy, Tony and Liz arrive. Ken's car has broken down so he's had to wait for Kevin's breakdown truck. They sit in the front row and tell other parents they're saved seats. They get a hard time from more than one parent who want to sit in the front row. There was a letter sent out about banning seat saving, one woman whines. Michelle and Steve arrive just then.

Sally is on her knees scrubbing Norris' doorstep. I didn't think anyone did that anymore! She's embarassed when Audrey spots her but chases Norris inside when the phone rings. Tim ambles up for a word. He starts to talk about Faye and Craig but Norris catches them talking and that's not allowed while Sally's on duty! He adds 4 minutes onto the total time she's got to work for him. Nasty little prig. Tim teases her and heads off for a pint.

The recorder recital is in full voice. Tracy is pulling her blouse down to expose more cleavage for Tony who's sitting next to her. Parent's and Steve as well are all taking video of the kids. They finish to enthusiastic applause.

Gail is at the cemetery. She puts the flowers on Gavin's grave, which is conveniently right at the front beside the church. In a bizarre scene, she starts to talk to the wooden marker about how Michael only wanted to find him and say sorry and let him know about the heart problem. She tells "Gavin" that Michael is a wonderful man and witters on about how families are not always easy but she's tried her best with hers. She says there's always something that happens that you least expect, for example, her granddaughter showing up from Italy out of the blue! She then leans in and asks "Have you got time for this?" Ludicrous.

Tim comes out of the pub and sees Faye by the clinic with Craig, telling him not to worry. When Faye walks away, Tim comes over. He pulls Craig over and says he wants to have a chat with him.

At the school, there's a little reception going on. Parents are milling about with coffees and teas while waiting for the kids. Steve talks to Tony and thanks him for the loan, promising he'll pay it back quickly. Tracy comes over, curious. Tony tries to put her off but Steve lets the cat out of the bag about Tony bailing him out with the house money. Uh oh. Tony scarpers and Tracy gets the rest of the details. She's less than impressed and glares at Tony over her shoulder.

Michael is still talking about hunting in the woods or climbing Snowdon. Bethany comes in, exhausted. Turns out she wasn't allowed to peel vegetables so she had to waitress instead. (But she's too young to serve alcohol!) As Gail points out, it meant she couldn't skive off. David asks Gail where the flowers are that she bought. Gail lies and says the flowers wilted almost immediately. Audrey is in the corner, still valiantly plowing through Anna Karenina. Bethany notices something out the window and runs back to the kitchen. The door opens and it's Sarah! She's furious! She lights into Bethany, shouting things like she was supposed to be in Florence, she was expelled and she stole from her mother! Gail introduces her to Michael as Sarah Lou. She is strenuously corrected. "It's Sarah!!!" before turning around to Bethany again as the ending music plays.

Bethany and Sarah's row escalates into a full-blown slanging match. Sarah tells her daughter she's going back to Italy whether she likes it or not, Bethany responds by picking up an ornament and hurling it across the room and Sarah squirts some washing-up liquid back. It misses Bethany and lands all over Audrey. David finally has something to smile about.

At the school concert Tracy's giving Tony a hard time for lying to her and then lending money to pay off the tax bill. She asks Steve what it feels like to be bailed out by his mum's boyfriend. Michelle jumps in to defend Steve. They're saved any more argument by the arrival of Amy and Liz. Amy is keen to tell them that the wrong note had nothing to do with her. It was the fault of Will Biggins on the end of the row. And he smells, she adds.

Sally arrives at the Rovers with Norris. He's taking full advantage of the fact that she's still on duty and dispatches her to the bar to fetch him his half pint. Sally snarls at Sean that she'd rather do a 10k run in high heels.

Meanwhile Tim is settling down with Craig and a couple of cans of lager. He suggests they watch some footie and have a bit of man time.

Back at the Platts' Bethany and Sarah still haven't sorted out their differences. Bethany complains that Sarah cares more about her new boyfriend Roberto than she does about her. She goes upstairs and then Michael comes in and asks if everyone can stop fighting. "You must be the burglar," declares Sarah. "Failed burglar," corrects Michael as he introduces himself.

At the allotment Zeedan comes out of the shed and is pleased to see that Simon has finished the planting. He hands him a fiver just in time before Sharif comes back. There's only one problem. Simon has been working in Roy's half of the allotment. Zeedan has to take the blame which earns him an earful from his grandfather. Not only that but Sharif makes him stay behind and undo all of Simon's hard work.

Tracy arrives back from the concert in a taxi. She's on the phone to Ken who tells her that the clutch has gone on the car. Liz has decided to wave the white flag of peace and asks Tracy if she wants to go into the Rovers for a drink. Tony gives Tracy a look and says he's sure she has things to do but Tracy can't wait to stir things up some more and accepts Liz's invitation with alacrity.

Across the street Jason encounters Bethany sobbing on a bench. He hardly recognized her since she's grown several feet since the last time he saw her. He asks how her mum is but looks a bit lost for words when Bethany replies that she hates her life.

In the Rovers, Sally still has another 39 minutes of acting as Norris's slave. He won't even let her buy herself a drink. Meanwhile Ken comes in and tells Tracy the car's going to cost £200 to fix. Liz decides everyone needs cheering up and tells Sean to open a bottle of fizz. Tracy raises her glass to the happy couple, Steve and Michelle, then looks over at Tony and Liz and says "to both happy couples". Tracy describes Tony as the knight in shining armour then tells Liz that his armour isn't quite as shiny as she thinks it is. "I think it's about time we told them the truth, don't you?" asks Tracy, looking straight at Tony. Liz looks confused.

Tony glares at Tracy and says that he doesn't think now is the time or the place. "Oh, it so is," says Tracy. But before she can spill the beans, Norris spills his beer all over the table. He demands Sally gets a cloth but she's finally reached the end of her tether. She pulls off Norris's scarf and uses it to mop up the mess. The distraction has given Tony time to gather his thoughts. He tells Liz that he and Tracy were planning to expand the business but instead he used the money to lend to Steve. Looking Tracy straight in the eye Tony tells her that their partnership is very important to him and he promises to make it up to her. He adds that they can discuss it later, in private. Tracy walks out and Liz says she can't believe she's saying this but perhaps Tony should go after her.

Back at Sally's the football match has reached half time and Tim starts to talk to Craig again about girls but at that moment Sally arrives home. Tim is skirting round the issue so Sally comes straight to the point and asks Craig if there's anything going on between him and Faye.

Out in the street Bethany is telling Jason all about her problems in Italy. He seems surprised and says he thought she and her mum were dead close. She tells Jason they used to be until Sarah got together with Roberto. According to Bethany pasta's got more personality. She sighs that her mum has never gone for brains in a bloke. "Apart from you, of course'" she adds hastily, looking at Jason. At that moment, Sarah appears. Jason is shocked – he had no idea she was back. They greet each other awkwardly then Jason leaves them to it. Sarah tells Bethany they need to talk.

Sally and Tim are giving Craig the third degree about Faye. He insists there's nothing going on between them but he has to come up with an excuse as to why they've been as thick as thieves recently. He makes up a story about how there's a girl at school he fancies and Faye's been giving him advice. Tim and Sally fall for it but then start arguing between themselves as to how women like men to first approach them. While this is going on Craig uses the opportunity to beat a hasty retreat.

Sarah and Bethany are finally talking to each other. Bethany complains that she hates her school and her mother spends all of her time working and she never has time for her any more. Sarah said she had no idea Bethany was so unhappy. Bethany begs not to have to go back to Italy and Sarah promises they'll talk about it. Gail's cooking bangers and mash to tea but Bethany wants chips. Her mum says they can't get chips, Gail will be really hurt but she doesn't take much persuading and the two of them head off to the chippy, giggling like a pair of naughty schoolgirls.

Tony meets Tracy in the back yard of the Rovers. She's really angry with him for lying about the money and threatens that one word from her could blow everything out of the water. Tony says if she does that she'll lose the business. She points out it's his business too. Tony promises he'll make it up to her but Tracy tells him to spare he the cliches and then marches off.

Gail's serving up her sausages while Sarah and Bethany chomp on their bags of chips. Gail says she thinks she preferred it when the two of them were arguing with each other. Audrey claims the pair of them are worse than Kylie. Sarah says sorry for kicking off earlier and Michael points out the ornament she smashed was one he'd given to Gail. Bethany says they throw things all the time in Italy and she and her mum start laughing about an incident when Sarah chucked a lasagna over someone's head. Gail asks how long they're staying for, perhaps a couple of days? David points out there's a nice B and B over on Tile Street but before he can says anything Gail offers them his room. Audrey says they can't stay with her because she's got boiler trouble.

Bethany asks Michael if it's true he could drop down dead at any moment and then goes on to talk about how she once saw someone collapse and die in the street. The conversation is interrupted by David who's noticed that the flowers Gail said she threw out aren't in the bin. She says they didn't even last until she got home so she threw them away in the bin in the street. Audrey tells her she should complain to Dev. Gail desperately tries to steer her off the subject.

Tony knocks on the door of number one. Tracy opens it but she's not about to let Tony come in. He's keen to make it up to her and suggests they go away for a weekend together somewhere. For a second it looks as though her resolve is about to weaken but when Tony goes to kiss her Tracy pushes him away. She tells him that it's over between them and from now on they're strictly business partners. "Go on, run along little poodle. Grandma's waiting," says Tracy nastily before shutting the door in Tony's face.
