Monday 1 February

Written by Chris Fewtrell Directed by Abe Juckes

Sophie and Sally are both griping about Rita having Jenny to stay and they want to make Rita "see sense". Kevin assures them there's nothing they can do, like it or not Jenny is there to stay for the time being. Tim thinks they should just steer clear but Sally reckons Jenny will show her true colours sooner or later and Rita will be the one getting hurt. Jenny comes out of Rita's flat to see the four of them glaring at her and says a civil good morning. She gets the same back! She turns and walks away.

Mary is making her way through chocolate and listening to sad songs. Dev comes in, having forgotten some paperwork (he says). He ascertains whether Mary has had breakfast and is told she's had chocolate, not a recommended breakfast for the kids but adequate for her needs. Indeed. He notes the musical artist. (Dido, "White Flag" sounding very much like "Fallen" by Sarah McLachlan) Mary spouts something that likens her to Dido as both being ethereal creatures that have no place, causing Dev to reassure Mary that she has a place with him and his family. She thanks him and says she'll be fine. He does look concerned.

Nick and Michelle stroll along talking about Carla who is getting fed up with the hospital. Johnny and Kate come along behind them. Johnny calls over to ask if Carla's coming out today, This is confirmed. Nick tells Johnny they don't need any extra help, thanks. Robert comes out of the door across the road. Nick had texted him earlier to say he would miss the solicitor's meeting due to bringing Carla home. Johnny offers to do the pick up run instead but Nick reckons that's not a good idea. He'll bring her home himself if Michelle will look after her for a little while? Michelle gladly agrees so Robert and Nick make plans to sign the new partnership contracts later. Kate offers to get some shopping in. Nick gives her his key but insists that Johnny stay away from Carla. Johnny moans to Kate that he really wants to do something. All those years of hiding and now that he can be up front, he's not allowed to do anything. Kate hands him the key and suggests he do the shopping instead, making him happy.

Tyrone and Fiz come out of the house bickering. Fiz is determined to sell her engagement ring because they couldn't afford it in the first place. They need the money more than the sentimental value. He tries to talk her out of it but she's not to be moved.

In the factory, Kate has arrived to find Sally trying to match up an order with an invoice but she's distracted and worried about Sophie. She tells Kate how Sophie lost Maddie and then Jenny kidnapped Jack on Maddie's funeral. Seeing Jenny back here is really upsetting Sophie, stirring up all those feelings again. Kate is sympathetic while Sally gets emotional. She thinks Sophie needs something to focus on to take her mind off it and suggests that Kate take her out for a drink. Sally figures if she herself does it, they'll only be going round the same old conversations. Aidan shouts for Kate from the office but she tells Sally over her shoulder she'll see if she can get Sophie to come out for a bit later. This, for once, doesn't really seem like one of Sally's schemes to matchmake.

In the office, Aidan asks Kate to go to the O'Driscolls' party and tells her to cancel any plans she might have had. Johnny was invited as well and Aidan needs Kate there to keep the peace because they can't afford to kick off in front of the clients. She refuses. Eva comes in bringing him a cup of coffee and hears the talk about a party. Kate suggests that Eva go with him. Aidan's not so sure but Kate pushes and Aidan agrees if Eva doesn't mind. Eva doesn't mind the idea of a fancy party with free food and bubbly one little bit!

Jenny and Rita are sharing a cup of tea. Rita is giving Jenny a pep talk about getting on with her life and putting the past in the past. A job is the best way forward but when Jenny offers to help in the Kabin, Norris puts his boot firmly against that proposal. Rita scolds him but Norris is not going to apologize. Rita then decides to decamp with Jenny for the afternoon, leaving him on his own.

Fiz turns up at the factory late after her dinner break, telling Sally and Kate she had to sell her engagement ring and explaining that they're well on their way to a much tighter belt with the lowest Frescho's bargain brand. Sally insensitively comments that brand is not worth feeding to a dog and they always have Fresco's finest. That makes Fiz jump up and run off to the ladies'. Nice one, Sal.

Johnny has arrived at Nick's with the shopping but breaks a jar of coffee. He crouches down with the nearby brush and dustpan just as Michelle and Carla come in. They're talking about Robert and the partnership and the fling. Carla can't get over how Robert can work with Nick after what they did. This, of course, shocks Johnny. He stands up, because they're going to find him there anyway. Michelle and Carla turn around in shock. He admits he heard it all. Carla says it was a mistake and she's not justifying it to him. He understands, she loves Nick. He loved Lou. Michelle gets bossy and insists that Carla deserves to be happy. Johnny doesn't plan to tell, anyway, he only wants her to be happy. She's still upset that Robert is going to be in her face all the time. Johnny leaves.

Rita and Jenny are in the cafe. Rita is trying to cheer Jenny up and not dwell on the nasty things Norris said. She then hands her a newspaper and a pen to go through the job ads while she supplies the tea and cake for sustenance. Kate has come in and defends Sophie but Rita gets her back up. Kate doesn't even know Jenny and certainly doesn't know the whole story but is prepared to tell her. Kate sits down.

Carla thinks maybe she should tell Nick now that Johnny knows. She thinks Johnny is a liability but Michelle doesn't think he'll let it slip. He knows what's at stake. Michelle keeps trying to get Carla to focus on her future.

Jenny has told Kate about losing her child. How it felt, how she didn't want to believe it was true but couldn't escape the reality of it. She didn't excuse what she did, with Jack, though. She's genuinely sorry and understands how Sophie feels and why. Kate asks if she has tried talking to Sophie but Jenny doesn't think she'd get very far. Rita asks Kate to put Jenny's case forward to Sophie. Kate says she'll try, maybe.

Fiz comes in moaning about Aidan. Tyrone is making a nice dinner for her. The kids are with Chesney and Sinead and he's going to give her a nice night in. He sees she sold the ring and she says she got a decent price for it. He brings out another box and it's got a metal washer in it from one of the cars. She smiles. He brings out a bottle of Prosecco, on special offer but that only makes her angry that he's not taking her seriously. She hollers at him and runs out of the room.

Kevin comes into the cafe to see Anna as she's clearing up and doing the washing up. He apologizes to her. He admits it wasn't easy accepting Jenny's return and explanation but he feels better for it. Anna reckons he might be right. She should say "stuff Pat Phelan" and move on. He tells her to go for it so she does, at the top of her lungs and then kisses him.

Mary is still wallowing, watching a soppy movie as Dev comes in. The movie is an old one where Shelly Winter has a cheating husband in Montgomery Clift who had an affair with Elizabeth Taylor. Shelly's character ends up dying, which seems to happen a lot with her characters. Mary is in bits. Dev tells her people are not gossiping about her, they're just concerned. She doesn't think much of that. He tries to insist that nobody blames her, that she's a victim. That doesn't help, Dev.

Sophie and Kate are having a drink. Sophie's recalling Maddie's 18th birthday when they went to a spa for the weekend. Over in the corner, Jenny and Rita are watching. Sophie mentions Jenny and Kate surmises Jenny's sorry for what she did. Once Sophie finds out that Jenny talked to Kate, she realizes Rita and Jenny put her up to this. Sophie is outraged and walks out just as Sally and Tim come in. It's awkward looks all around.

Aidan is shouting down the phone for his father who's not shown up yet. It's important, so where is he? Behind him, Eva slinks up wearing a tight red dress and looking like a million. When Aidan turns around, he says hi but doesn't look wowed. He tells her this is a business meeting as well and invites her to get into the Underworld van (he's got some samples to show Ritchie). Her face falls in disappointment. She teeters around to the passenger side but her dress is so tight she can't get up into the van. Aidan watches for a minute then comes around to lift her in, like he's tossing a sack of potatoes. Gosh, he's unpleasant, isn't he? He gets in and t hey drive off.

Robert comes out of the Bistro. Johnny runs across the road and shoves him up against a wall, insisting they have to have words. Now.

Tvor

Johnny's a man on a mission. He confronts Robert and orders him to pull out of the Bistro deal. But Robert isn't going to be told what to do by anyone and he tells Johnny that whatever father-daughter issues he and Carla have, he can leave him out of it.

Someone else on a mission is Sally who storms into the Rovers where she finds Kate, Rita and Jenny. She wants to know who's upset her daughter. Kate admits it's her fault for talking to Jenny but Sally points the fingers at Rita for taking her back in the first place. She tells Rita not to go crying to her when Jenny's smothered her in her bed for her pension book.

Carla is at home in the flat where Michelle has been making her a shepherd's pie for tea. She asks for a glass of wine by Michelle points out she can't drink with her meds. As Michelle is about to leave Johnny turns up. He wants to know if Carla's eaten. "With what you put in my fridge?" snorts Carla adding that she's not a pork pie and pickled onion kind of girl. Johnny remembers when she snuck into the pub as a child and stole the pickled onions off his ploughman's lunch. Carla retorts that a person will eat anything if they're hungry. Michelle leaves them to it.

Eva and Aidan arrive at the O'Dricolls' house in the Underworld van and we gather they're running late. Eva is dressed up to the nines in a tight red cocktail dress and tottering on high heels. Richie O'Driscoll opens the door and wants to know where Johnny is – Aidan promises he's coming later. To their embarrassment they discover it's a dinner party and the other guests are already half way through their meal. Noticing the rather large expanse of flesh on show, Julia O'Driscoll offers Eva a pashmina. "Thanks," replies Eva. "I'll drink anything, me". Aidan says he'll have one too.

Round at Dev's the children are having their tea. Mary's given them alphabetti spaghetti followed by mince pies from the freezer. Dev points out she only has to pop round to the shop if she's run out of food but as the kids whisper to Dev, she's acting all weird as though she's afraid to leave the house. While Mary bustles off to the kitchen Dev makes a phone call. He tells the person on the other end of the phone that Mary's getting worse and asks them to come round.

Eileen, Phelan and Jason are enjoying a drink together in the Bistro and Phelan is entertaining them with a funny story. Kevin and Anna arrive for their romantic meal and Anna reacts with horror when she sees Phelan. Eileen asks if they'd like to join them but Kevin says no thanks, they're having a date night.

In the Rovers, Kate is talking to Tim by the bar. She thinks Sophie must hate her but Tim says Sophie doesn't have it in her to hate anyone. Michelle wonders what Rita was thinking. Tim reckons she was thinking everyone deserves a second chance. Sarah's view is that anyone who takes someone else's kid deserves everything they get. Jenny's watching this exchange from the other side of the room and tells Rita that if looks could kill she'd be doing a CPR on her right now. Rita isn't about to stand down on this one and she tells Jenny to go up to the bar and order the next round of drinks. Sarah tries to avoid serving her but Michelle tells her to do it. Jenny thanks Michelle but her face falls when Michelle replies there's no thanks needed but that whatever she's doing back here she's to leave her cousin out of it.

Ty is at home with Fiz and he's been working out a weekly budget. He hopefully suggests that they could set aside a small amount for treats – for the girls he adds, hastily – and maybe the odd pint? Fiz hands him his coat and his face lights up as he thinks they're going out. It falls again as Fiz tells him no, they're turning the heating down to save money.

Sally's at home with Sophie. She's wittering on about her election campaign and how she's been told she should start using social media. But as far as she can tell, all people ever seem to put on Facebook are pictures of food and wonders how her posting a photo of liver and bacon is supposed to get her any votes. Sophie is sitting miserably on the sofa. Tim comes in with Kate and Sally wants to know where he's been all this time. He says he's been trying to convince Kate to come and talk to Sophie.

Johnny is eating shepherd's pie with Carla. He tells her that whatever it is that's been going on with her and Robert, he feels responsible. She tells him that she's only just discovered that he's her father so the last thing she wants to discuss with him is her sex life. While this is going on his phone keeps ringing. It's Aidan calling but Johnny ignores it.

Meanwhile, at the dinner party, Aidan is in trouble. It seems the O'Driscolls have a rule of no mobile phones at the table. They make him hand his over and then all the other guests follow suit and place theirs in a large bowl. Then Julia announces they're going next door for the fun part of the evening and gives Aidan's bottom and cheeky squeeze. Eva looks in horror at Aidan at the implication. Before they move to the next room Aidan asks Richie if they can have a quick word about work. But since Johnny hasn't even bothered to turn up for the second time it looks as though all bets are off as far as the order is concerned.

Sally and Tim have been reduced to sitting in the conservatory to give Kate and Sophie a chance to talk. Sally tells Tim it's very uncouth to wear his hat indoors but it's freezing out there.

It's just as chilly round at Fiz and Ty's. Luke comes in and finds them huddled in their coats and Fiz explains about keeping the heating bills down. Luke asks Ty if he'd like to go for a pint. Ty's face falls – he can't afford it – but he perks up again when Luke offers to stand him a round.

Tim's had enough of hanging out in the conservatory. He bundles Sally past the startled girls who are talking in the sitting room and tells them they're off upstairs so Sally can get changed and then they're going back to the Rovers.

Dev's reinforcements have arrived. He's asked Erica to come round to see if she can persuade Mary to go to the Rovers. But Mary can't face the outside world and says she's staying in to read "The Scarlet Letter". Following the theme of the novel Mary says she's thinking of sewing a large letter 'H' onto her knitwear. Erica points out that Whore is spelled with a 'W'. Mary replies she meant 'H' for Harlot but at least she now knows what Erica really thinks of her.

The entertainment at the O'Driscolls' isn't quite as dodgy as it might have first appeared as the guests are enjoying a bit of karaoke. Richie decides it's Aidan's turn but Aidan isn't keen (which is a nice bit of irony as Shayne Ward, who plays the part, was a previous winner of X Factor). Richie implies this will put paid to any orders with Underworld so Eva steps up to the plate. Making the most of her sizeable assets and slinky red dress she is clearly impressing Richie with her performance of "Hey Big Spender". Julia comments to Aidan that he has a good one there. "Tell me about it" he replies, admiringly.

In the Bistro, Phelan Eileen and Jason are continuing to enjoy their drink together. Robert comes out of the kitchen with a dish of lasagne. He suggests Nick might like to take it home for Carla so Nick asks him to look after the bar and says he won't be gone long. Phelan goes over to Kev and Anna's table and asks if they can have a quick chat about work but Kevin firmly tells him not now. As Phelan walks away, Anna thanks Kevin and gives him a kiss. Phelan doesn't look best pleased.

Johnny is still round at Carla's. She tells him his fifteen minutes is up but he's been enjoying their chat and doesn't want to leave. He starts to ask her why she would risk her relationship with Nick for someone like Robert just as Nick comes through the door. They abruptly stop the conversation and Johnny takes his leave.

Aidan and Eva arrive back in the van just as Johnny is confronting Robert on the doorstep of number 1. Aidan hurries across and wants to know what's going on. "Do you want to tell him or shall I?" asks Robert before letting himself into the house. Johnny claims it's nothing, he just doesn't like the way Robert treats Nick. But Aidan is furious that whatever happened stopped Johnny from turning up at the O'Driscolls. He says that if it wasn't for Eva they could have kissed goodbye to any future business with them. Aidan tells his father he's let him down again but he supposes he should be getting used to it by now. Johnny sighs as Aidan declares him to be a waste of space.

Wednesday 3 February

Nick is fussing round Carla, who's on the sofa, making sure she has everything she needs before he goes off to work.

Jenny is in the Kabin with Rita, looking through the job pages in the paper. Aidan comes in for a paper and Rita asks if he's looking for staff. He says they are looking for a cleaner, so Rita puts Jenny forward. He asks if she can start a 8 o'clock and says he'll give her a trial. When he's gone out, Jenny voices her concerns to Rita, they're hardly going to welcome her there with open arms. Rita is sure everything will be fine. Just then Billy comes in, and, seeing how worried Jenny looks, asks if everything is all right. Rita explains about the job, and Billy gives her lots of encouragement, saying it was difficult for him, too, when he first came.

Carla is still on her sofa when there's a knocking on the door. She thinks it's Nick, forgotten his keys, but when she opens it, Robert comes striding in, demanding to know why she set Johnny on him. Carla tells him she knows nothing about it, and asks him to leave. Robert doesn't believe her and says that now Aidan is asking questions, but eventually, when Carla says she'll sort it out, he goes.

Tyrone is moaning about the fact that he's got meat paste sandwiches for lunch, when Luke is planning on fish and chips. Fiz gives him some money, so he cheers up for a moment until she tells him that the 3 quid she's just handed over has to last him all week. Luke goes off to work and Fiz pulls Tyrone back and asks him to ask Luke for a bit extra in rent.

Jenny is sweeping up in the factory when the workers arrive. Sally demands to know what she's doing there. Jenny tells them she doesn't want any trouble, she needed a job, the factory needed a cleaner, but Sally is having none of it and marches off to the office where Johnny, Aidan and Kate are sitting. "What is she doing here, sweeping up?" she says as she bursts through the door. "I think you've answered your own question," says Aidan. Sally, all high and mighty, asks if he has any idea of Jenny's history, she's a criminal, and if she is kept on, she, Sally will have no option but to tender her resignation. "Fair enough," says Aidan, "we'll be sorry to see you go, but respect your decision." Sally is flabbergasted, but has no choice then but to slink out of the office.

Erica and Dev are in the shop, wondering what they can do to cheer Mary up. Just then Rita comes in, come to ask how Mary is. They tell her that she still hasn't left the house.

Simon goes home to pick up his p.e. kit, and Leanne shows him an ad in the paper for some football trials later. He seems interested, so Leanne suggests they ask Nick to take him.

Tyrone and Luke are sitting eating their lunch. Tyrone is looking longingly at Luke's fish and chips, but also trying to broach the subject of the rent. "Listen, there's something I've been meaning to ask you," he says, still gazing at Luke's meal. Luke then picks up half the fish and half the chips and generously hands them over to Tyrone, adding a helping of mushy peas too. "There you are, all for one and one for all," he says. "Now, what was it you wanted to ask me?" "Nothing, it doesn't matter," says Tyrone.

It's lunch time at the factory, and they're all round the table chatting as Jenny wipes tables down, when Sean goes to his locker and finds his French Fancies are missing. At first he accuses Beth, who is adamant it wasn't her, but goes on to say that it's a bit of coincidence that stuff should start going missing the day that Jenny starts working there. Johnny and Aidan then appear and Johnny tells them to hurry up and get back to work, muttering quietly to Aidan that he hopes his cleaner isn't going to be more trouble than she's worth. Aidan is sure she'll be fine. They're still squabbling when the door opens and Carla and Richie O'Driscoll come in behind them.

They are all now in the office, and Carla is trying to pour oil on troubled waters. Richie can't believe that Johnny and Aidan would have a disagreement in front of all their staff, as Carla tries to explain it away, adding that Johnny is the best in the business and she'll keep them in line. Richie points out that she's not in the best shape herself, but Carla assures him she'll soon be back full time, and she's keeping an eye on everything. As Aidan sees him out to his car, Carla goes over to Johnny and demands to know what he thought he was playing at with Robert.

Erica arrives to visit Mary and finds her in the dressing gown watching daytime tv. She explains that Dev wants her to make a nice meal for the children later, but she has no idea what to make them. Mary says she's not in the mood for cooking or company. Erica says Mary doesn't have to cook, just tell her what they'll eat, and asks if she'll come with her to help choose the ingredients. Mary looks doubtful. "Come on, it'll be fun," says Erica, "for the kids."

Back in the office at the factory, Johnny explains that he was just trying to help. Carla is furious, and tells him that if she wanted someone to fight her battles for her she'd find someone bigger and scarier. She tells him to stay out of her personal business. Just then the phone rings and Carla answers it to find it's Sally saying she wants her job back. "I didn't know you'd lost it," says Carla, "what's been going on here?"

Over at the bistro, Robert is telling Leanne they can't get complacent and wants to come up with some new ideas. Just then Nick arrives back with Simon, they've been to the football trials and Simon got a place in the team! When he's gone off to the kitchen to tell Zeedan, Nick remarks that it's good to see Simon with a smile on his face.

Fiz arrives home to find Tyrone has bought the children some comics, she's not happy but he points out he can spend his pocket money on whatever he likes. She starts to ask him if he asked Luke about the rent, but before Tyrone can say anything, Luke comes in. He sits down and says that he knows that they're not charging him full whack for the rent and feels he ought to be paying more. "Would an extra 50 quid a month help?" he asks. They tell him that would be great.

Sally goes back to the factory, she's got her job back, she tells Beth and Sinead that the place wouldn't function properly without her, Carla practically had to beg her to reconsider. Just then Beth discovers that 10 pounds is missing from her purse. "The phantom thief strikes again," mutters Sally, and is sure it's Jenny. Sinead is sure she wouldn't be daft enough to start nicking on her first day.

Dev and the children arrive home to the smell of something lovely cooking for dinner. Erica tells them how she and Mary went shopping and got some posh pizzas from the Italian place in town. Mary seems a lot more cheerful as she lays the table and Dev hugs her, saying it's nice to see her smile again. As she scurries off to the kitchen, Erica turns to Dev and says, "One step at a time, but we have made some progress today." "Thank you," whispers Dev.

Jenny is in the pub, telling Billy and Rita that the day was a disaster from start to finish. Just then Sally, Beth and Sinead come in, and Sally remarks pointedly that someone is spending their ill-gotten gains. Rita asks what that's supposed to mean, and Beth tells her about the missing food and money. "It wasn't me," says Jenny, and pushes her bag under Sally's nose, telling her to check it. Billy tells Sally she shouldn't go around making unfounded accusations. Sally tells Rita to be careful about the company she keeps, or she'll be tarred with the same brush. Billy tells her that the only person tarring anyone with anything is her, and Sinead says that Billy is right. Sally sighs, and then tells Jenny she's watching her, and one step wrong and she'll have her out of the factory faster than her feet can carry her.

Friday 5 February

Hello,

We begin with Rita and Jenny in the back room of the Kabin sorting out the magazines. Kevin and Jack come into the shop and Rita tells Jenny to stay where she is. She does, but she's almost weeping as she hears little Jack. She tells Rita there's nothing sadder than a child without it's mum. Rita points out that a mum without a child is worse.

It seems to be lunchtime in the factory, though Beth, eating a salad roll, points out that salad isn't proper food. Aidan's puzzling over a broken-down sewing machine and Johnny offers to help him fix it. Aidan grudgingly accepts because it's beyond him. Beth has a new bumbag (Americans please note: They are NEVER called fanny-packs here!) to keep her assets safe from thieving colleagues. They discuss the possibility of improved security but Kate doubts management will cough up the money for CCTV. Sally thinks it's disgraceful she should have to work alongside a THIEF - the last word said very loudly in case Jenny couldn't hear it.

Tim's finishing off cleaning the bistro windows, though even I could reach the top of them so I don't know why they'd pay someone to clean them. He chats to Zeedan and then takes his bucket and squeegee away. Zeedan spots Simon and asks how things are going. Simon mumbles something and Leanne tells Zeedan that so far all he's said in the counseling sessions has been about Peter.

Tim's on his way home for a post-windows nap and makes the mistake of talking to Sally and Ken together. Ken hasn't had a chance to work on the campaign so Sally offers up Tim's services for the afternoon.

Sinead takes Johnny a cup of tea and listens to him talk about his idea - real-life models, rather than stick-figure fashion clothes hangers. Sinead thinks it's a brilliant idea and that Aidan will love it. Johnny points out that Aidan will reject it if he thinks it's Johnny's idea.

Dev's cheered by seeing Mary with a smile. Erica suggests she and Mary go for a drink. Mary would rather not go to the Rovers because it's the scene of her humiliation.

Aidan's on his way out but Sinead hits him with the idea of real women as models. He loves it and promises to suggest it to the O'Driscolls.

Tim's checking out Ken's living room. He wants to know who the bloke it who looks like a pug chewing a wasp. Uncle Albert, of course! Every time Ken suggests making a start on the campaign strategy, Tim finds some reason to delay for a few more minutes.

The factory workers discuss the weekend. Sally says something snarky about Jenny and Johnny tells her to drop it. After, while he's staying late to wait for a delivery, Kirk tries to make conversation with Jenny, though conversation has never been his strong point. He thinks Sally treats her unfairly. Jenny says Sally's like a fly buzzing around her head. And you know what happens to flies. "They get swatted!" Kirk suddenly seems a bit scared.

In the Kabin, Mary and Rita have a cuppa. Mary thinks she's been used, abused and cast away.

Jenny's sweeping outside the factory when Tyrone, Jack and Sophie appear in the garage. Jack pauses and waves to Jenny. She waves back, in a small way.

In the pub, Sally's trying to stir up trouble for Jenny. Eva comments that Jenny's got lovely hair. Sally tries to talk about her campaign but all she manages is to make Beth laugh because he campaign team consists of just Ken. Aidan is back from his meeting and tells Sinead the customer loved the idea of real women as models, though Sinead tells him it was Johnny's idea. Sally and Beth immediately mention their modeling credentials but Aidan asks Sinead if she'd consider it. Eva immediately gets up and leaves.

She arrives in the bistro and suggests she and Leanne go into town.

Sophie checks on the progress of some work on a car and goes back into the garage office to find Jack has gone. Kevin arrives and send them out to all four corners of the earth (Viaduct Street, Rosamund Street) looking for him.

Erica arrives at Dev's and tells Mary to get upstairs and get herself tarted up.

Aidan has found Eva and tells her he didn't pick her because she looks like a model and nobody would believe she was an ordinary woman. He talks her round and she agrees to meet him in 20 minutes. Leanne tells Eva that Aidan's clearly smitten by her.

Kevin desperately hunts in the ginnel.

At home, Kate tells Aidan that weddings are a celebration of family but if they're all still at each others' throats then maybe she should cancel hers. "Please talk to each other. Sort it out!"

In the pub, Michelle is stressed because she can't look after the bar and go and fetch Amy. Mary comes in with Erica and immediately assumes Sean and Sinead are talking about her. They're not. Sean tells her that what she needs is a rebound relationship - he puts "I Will Survive" on the juke box for her.

In the factory, Jenny hugs Jack close and tells him she's sorry and that she loves him.

Sally's not very impressed by what Ken and Tim have done so far. Ken asks if she's heard the news. She hasn't. A councilor has been arrested for fraud and there's to be a bye-election in four weeks!

Kevin tells Rita and Sophie he's sure Jenny must have taken Jack. Just then, Jenny comes out of the factory holding Jack's hand. "Come on, Sweetie," she says. "GET YOUR HANDS OFF HIM!" screams Kevin, with his caps locked! He tells Jenny that this time she's going to get what's coming to her.

The end (for now).

On with the report. This particular episode is number 8833 and was written by Susan Oudot and directed by Abe Jukes. Copyright remains the property of ITV to whom many thanks.

The first scene this week is in the Street with much shouting going on. Indeed I thought I had been transplanted to Walford. As ever no-one bothers to check the facts before sounding off so Jenny is back in everyone's bad books for allegedly kidnapping Jack. Sal really digs the claws in and it justifies everything Sophie (who is really to blame for leaving him unsupervised) believes about the unreformed witch Jenny. Rita is trying to get the truth - but no-one will co-operate as they are like a lynch mob choosing between the rope or the ducking stool. Rita takes Jenny away.

Johnny is talking to Aidan over a few drinks. He calls the affair with Carla's mother a mistake. Johnny says it was his love for Aidan's mother that enabled him to carry on after her death. He is simply asking for understanding. Kate returns and is pleased not to find a dead body. (Shayne Ward seems to be adapting well to a new career as an actor btw).

Over at the Bistro Eva and Leanne are dolled up with the former repeating chat up lines for their entertainment as Aidan is now late. Andy is a man of mystery and does not use chat up lines. Eva plans to go and give Aidan a piece of her mind - but Leanne knows he will get round her (exactly what she wants of course). She says she will not be a no-show - but Leanne knows just what will happen.

Sophie is trying to make excuses for her failure. Anna arrives and is glad that Jack is safe. Anna weighs in to support Sophie against the mad woman. Jack calls for his Daddy and Kev goes upstairs. Anna observes that they are not having much luck.

In the Rovers Jenny is declaiming her innocence to Rita and that she knew taking him back would cause problems. She says Jack simply appeared next to her in the factory. Rita sounds unconvinced (but honestly most of the time Jack was with her she looked after him and cared for him - even when they ran away - he has no great reason to feel scared of her). Jenny notes the reticence and storms off. Erica and Mary join Rita at the bar.

Out in the Street Sal spies Audrey. Sal notes that Audrey did politics with Alf and then later she reached the top all on her own. Sal makes the mistake of assuming that Audrey simply inherited the baton and the contacts. Sal says that knowing the right people is important. So Sal wonders if Audrey could pass on her contacts list (completely overlooking to Audrey's annoyance her knowledge of the processes involved). As Jenny walks by Sally loudly observes her surprise that she is still able to walk the streets. Jenny gives as good as she gets. Sal says Kev is soft for not dobbing her in but Jenny responds that he was soft in the head when married Sally! When Sally is a councilor she will get rid of people like Jenny she observes to Audrey. Audrey reminds her about contacts and gets her address book out which Sally rapidly grabs and heads off to Ken's with Audrey in hot pursuit. Ken is very pleased to see Audrey at his front door, she is very embarrassed.

We hear Kirk counting as Eva determinedly marches into the factory. He loses track of his counting.

Ken and Audrey are now there to help Sally - local politics is a mutual back scratching club as Alfie used to say. Sally observes that there is a thin line between support and corruption. Sal has been thinking about campaign strap lines "Need a pal? Vote for Sal!" or "Sally Metcalfe: It's Time". {Audrey observes that is not original - but then perhaps she is the only one who remembers Gough Whitlam and Australia in 1972). Tim chimes in "Don't be silly, vote for Sally." Which goes not get selected. Tim gets his wish and is allowed to go to the Rovers. In the background Si is gaming and still wants to know what policies Sal will be promoting. Apparently most of Audrey's contacts are dead!

Eva enters the unlocked factory (remember Kirk is still counting his delivery) and calls for Aidan, although the lights are off and there is no-one home. She gets her phone out and then hears noises. She calls for Kirk but he is outside. She calls Aidan - still no response. The noise is upstairs. When she gets there a strange figure emerges from behind some boxes. The hideaway says in accented English that she is not a thief. Eva wants to know who she is and why she is hiding up there.

After the break the intruder is trying to say she has done no wrong. She begs Eva not to report her - they will hurt her and her family. Kate comes in to tell Eva that Aidan is at her house.

Leanne is unsurprised by Eva not showing up. Leanne is sad, spends her night's at her workplace and has been stood up. Andy indicates that over there she has been getting an appraising eye for some time. She thinks he is joking. Andy says that the guy is a seven or an eight. Leanne glances round and suddenly sits up much straighter.

Gathered at the Rovers bar are Liz, Eileen, Mary and Erica, the last of which is proclaiming she is good mates with Dev. Liz knows she is not a lady who has male mates. Mary stands up for Dev who has always been a good friend to her and possesses qualities lacking in other men, who are mainly lying untrustworthy charlatans. She goes on to call them a gaggle of libertines, philanderers and inveiglers. [I love it and so obviously do the scriptwriters; Mary can get away with saying almost anything, using a wonderfully extensive vocabulary and yet thanks to her delivery it still sounds "right"]. Tim does not understand the words but reckons if he said something similar he would be called sexist! Mary thanks Erica for getting her to see this - around these women the corpses of dead relationships must lie ten deep. And she knows they can feel her pain. The other three look a little distressed through hearing the truth. Erica is the first to admit it and calls for another bottle ahead of a long night.

Anna is trying to re-assure Sophie. Kev comes downstairs - Jack is asleep and Jenny was telling the truth. Kev feels terrible - he sounded off with no proof. He is going to apologise.

On the Street it is now dark and Jenny is carrying two rather nice, light but fully packed, expensive looking, leather bags and placing them in the boot of a car. Kev tells her that Jack has confirmed her story and he is sorry. Jenny does not blame him - if the roles had been reversed she would have felt the same. Her past will always haunt her. Kev just felt sick at Jack being missing again. Jenny says she is going but Kev says that is ridiculous. Rita and Norris also appear out of the gloom and Kev tells them to stop her going. Norris supports Jenny's departure. Kev says that Jenny needs people to support her - especially Rita. Rita says she must stay for now as she likes having someone she can talk to. Kev offers to carry the bags back in. Norris is less sure.

Eva has sent Leanne a text "Feeling ill, off to bed". Andy gets her to stay for a drink as the man is still casting approving looks. She agrees to another "last one". The stranger approaches and offers to buy a drink - which Andy delivers. Tom. Leanne. They shake hands.

Endless political discussions at Number One. Audrey raises recycling and the lack of collections. Sal approves of the environment but Si wants to know about wind farms and the one on the Red Rec, so the kids lose the green space. Sal falls for it - but Ken guesses that Si is on a wind up. Ken says that they need to talk about Sal's manifesto as Audrey departs.

Tom tells Leanne to call him as she types his number into her phone. He walks off leaving half of his pint behind. Leanne tells Andy that he seemed nice enough. But she will not call him. Andy says the guy is an eight! Leanne guesses he has just had a major tip. And she is right - but there is still a wide smile on her face as she looks at the phone.

Erica is walking Mary home. She tells Mary that not all men are as bad as Brendan. She reminds Mary of the good bits of the relationship. The bad bits hurt but it will pass. Erica assures her that the right man is out there somewhere. And the good bits will happen again. Mary calls her very wise - to Erica an unexpected compliment.

Johnny and Aidan are still talking about the latter's mother. Aidan looks at his watch and realises he is hours late for Eva. Kate tells him she has gone home and that she has explained to Eva it was Kate's fault that Aidan had not turned up. Aidan tells Kate as he goes that they are not there yet - but closer. She says they had better be by the wedding.

At the factory Eva is asking the intruder her age - 16. Slowly as she eats the girl tells her story. She has been brought from Poland to the UK to work - but she has run away. She was working as a maid and she worked hard, but not hard enough. The people who brought her do not treat her well. She is hungry and she has no money. Apparently she owes the people money to pay for her ticket. They will not let her go home. The people have her passport and that she must stay here. Eva says none of this is right and that she should report them. If she does report them they will hurt her family and her sisters. And then they will burn her house down. Eva thinks it is unbelievable. The girl wants help and Eva nods.

In the Rovers Sally sitting with Tim and Kirk is questioning if the stresses are worth it. Kirk reckons that she needs the dog owner votes and she would be home and dry. Kirk returns to work and Tim heads to the gents when Jenny walks in bold as brass. She sits with Sally who thinks that Jenny is kidding. Jenny explains that Kev has asked her to stay once he found out the truth. She finishes by asking if the cat has got Sally's tongue. She tells Sally to think very carefully before crossing her. Or what asks Sally. "Believe me" says Jenny as she leans forward menacingly "You really don't want to know". Jenny stands and departs. Sal looks discomforted.

I observed to my wife that I am looking forward to Jenny and Tracy crossing paths - now that could be frightening.

For the record and from the titles: Marta Zarek is the new female arrival and is played by Edyta Budnik Tom Finlay is the new male arrival and is played by Daniel Casey.

Given her track record it would be nice if it went smoothly for Leanne for some time.

No doubt the team have done their research - but surely Marta's "running away" would lead to the family at home suffering over the unpaid debt in exactly the same measure as she is suggesting for any attempt to report her treatment? So with the damage done, going to the police as Eva suggested cannot make it worse? Or have I missed something?

Monday 8 February

Written by Simon Crowther Directed by Duncan Foster

Leanne has a look through Simon's homework assignments and discovers that he has to pick a country and list some facts about it. He's picked "V" and suggests Venezuela but he's not actually done the assignment yet and it's due today. He figures he can do it on the bus or after school in detention but she reminds him he's got his first football match later on. He shrugs and says he can guess at the information. When he goes into his room, she pulls out the laptop.

It's early, and Eva has come into the factory to bring Marta something to eat, cookies and an apple. Eva asks if Marta plans to go out at some point but she'd rather not and besides, she doesn't have a coat. Remember that point for later. Eva hands over the newspaper and remarks that the local team, County, lost again. They hear Kirk singing a nursery rhyme as he arrives so Marta scrambles through a back door to hide. Kirk puts down his boxes and Eva makes a lame excuse for being early. Kirk is in early because Kate has to go pick up Caz who's coming for a visit.

Leanne has done all of the fact gathering on Venezuela for Simon, which isn't very helpful, doing his homework for him but never mind. Simon is grumpy about it and growls that he's doing Virgin Islands, as he's changed his mind. Typical teenager. He tells her he doesn't want her doing his homework for him and he doesn't want her to come to the football match. She assures him she's coming and bringing his granddad which further annoys him. He slopes off to school, and she runs after him with something he's forgotten.

In the cafe, Kevin is perusing the newspaper and thinking about a slogan for the new business. Phelan and Jason come in and join him. Jason tells him that the job should be finished today which pleases Kevin. They chat about a glass company slogan and Phelan then starts up a conversation about County and their defeat.

In the factory, Marta is peering through a slightly opened door. The workers are all busy and chatting as usual. Sean gets up and models his new winter coat that Billy bought him, a long, black number, double breasted with a big, fake-furry collar. They all tease him about it being rather Cossack looking and it doesn't seem like Sean likes it over much. Aidan and Johnny come in. Jenny pipes up and offers to make a cup of tea for anyone. Johnny tells her she doesn't have to skivvy for folks but Aidan orders one with sugar. Beth mentions she's getting her hair done later. Kirk comes through the door from the packing department and gestures behind him, saying he thinks there's a mouse because he's heard rustling out back. Everyone screams and scatters and Johnny practically levitates up the stairs in fright (while Marta is actually peering through a door at the opposite end of the room, mind you). Johnny decides it's the best time to get out and Eva doesn't think it's a mouse, just the breeze. Kirk thinks it sounds like a rustling of newspapers. Aidan doesn't think mice read newspapers but Kirk pipes up "Have you never seen Tom and Jerry?" (ha!) Aidan tells them all to get back to work while Marta moves away from the door that's hiding her and Kirk returns to the back area. I'm not quite sure how he's heard anything when she was nowhere near there. Anyway, Jenny asks Beth what she's getting done with her hair but Beth is rude to her, still thinking she's the one that stole 10 quid.

David rushes to open up the salon, a string of customers waiting. Ken comes around the corner and asks him if he knows when Audrey will be back to work (because he must not have a working telephone or maybe Audrey's avoiding his calls?). David is up to his eyeballs and rushed off his feet and doesn't have time to chat.

Anna is sweeping outside the cafe and overhears Phelan on the phone making calls and trying to find more work now that the current job is finishing.

In the Bistro, Leanne and Eva must have been talking about the man Leanne was chatting to the other night. Leanne declares she really doesn't have time for a new fella but Eva thinks she should call him.

In the pub, Beth, who said she was going to work through lunch to get off early for her hair appointment, is not actually working though Sally reminds her of her supervisory status. Kirk comes in with good news and bad. The bad news is that he invited Jenny to sit with them but when Jenny arrives, Beth and Sally get up and leave, Beth ordering Kirk to follow, leaving Jenny alone at the bar.

Phelan looks to see if Jason and the rest of the crew are looking towards the Arches (they're standing over in front of the Kabin) before making his way carefully into the premises and sliding the doors closed.

Leanne goes into the kitchen and apologizes to Zeedan for all the talk he must have overheard about this man chatting up Leanne. She insists she's not ready for a new relationship but he tells her she should ring Tom. She is grateful he feels like that and then tells him about Simon's football match and invites him along. After she leaves he does look a bit hurt and thoughtful. Still, it was a very grown up thing to say.

Inside the Arches, Phelan is fiddling with the electrics fuse box. After the break, he leads the crew inside. The lights don't work and when Jason flips the fuse breakers, it hisses and sparks and the whole thing goes dark.

We're at the football match now and Leanne is helpfully tying Simon's boots, the laces having got all knotted up. He doesn't seem to be upset at all that, first, she's there, and second, she's tying his shoes like he was 6. She does start to annoy him though, when she scolds him. His mate starts teasing him and that, naturally, embarrasses him as does Ken's attempt at helping. Any teenage boy is going to be mortified at all this.

At the Arches, Kevin has come over and learned that there's now a problem. Phelan makes out that the electrics weren't fitted very well. Kevin is on the phone to the contractor who had signed everything off and the conversation doesn't go well, while Phelan and Jason make jokes about cowboy builders. Phelan offers to fix it with Jason but it will take a few days. Phelan looks smug.

The match continues. The referees and coaches/managers are shouting and encouraging the teams. Zeedan is getting into the match, with encouragement shouted from the sidelines while Ken witters on about competition. Leanne is surprised when Tom comes up behind her. His son is on the same team as Simon, it turns out. They establish that he's separated and she's divorced. Simon notices Leanne smiling up at Tom and his mate, Kylie, on the other team, sidles up with a disparaging remark about his mother flirting at a football match. Oh this isn't going to be good, is it?

David is working on Beth's hair, another queue of customers waiting. While she talks about this and that, David is putting dye on her hair and Beth notices that it smells different than the product Audrey usually uses. David takes it into the back. Gail comes in and asks David that Kylie wants to know what to make the kids for their tea. He's incredulous that the pair of them can't figure it out for themselves, as am I but it's all contrived to make David more flustered than he already is. David picks up a customer note card, looks at it, then looks up at Beth, concerned.

Back at the match, it's half time and Simon is very clearly in a foul mood. He comes up one side of Leanne and down the other for chatting up his manager (Tom). Leanne defends herself but it's no good. Simon is furious.

Sean opens his locker and it's empty, or rather, empty when he's expecting his coat to be there and it isn't. He throws blame Jenny's way but she defends herself. She takes children, not coats! This time, Sally actually defends Jenny because, as she rightly points out, Jenny has been there all the time and they would have seen her, and where would she be hiding the coat since she's not wearing it. Izzy is surprised at the defense. Johnny comes out to find out what's going on and is surprised at the accusations, too. Kirk comes back out and again says there's been something in the back room and he even thinks he heard it talk. Marta is still peering though what I thought was the door but it seems as if it's a pile of boxes in the back. And if Kirk heard something behind the boxes, I've no idea why he didn't just look to see what it was. They all go round and round about it all until Marta bursts out through, scattering the boxes, wearing the coat, and plows through the group of people, upsetting Izzy in her chair. Izzy lands on the floor in considerable pain while Marta escapes out the front door.

Kevin is still trying to think up a slogan for the business but not getting any helpful suggestions from Jason and Phelan. Anna comes in, not looking happy to see the company Kevin is keeping. He comes to the bar, but when he tells them that Pat is going to help them rewire the electrics, she informs Kevin that she overheard him earlier looking for work and reckons he sabotaged things. Phelan's cool but Jason and Kevin defend him.

Kylie and Simon are struggling on the pitch, Kyle continuing to wind up Simon. The manager for Kyle's team gets into an argument with the referee while Simon goes charging back to tussle with Kyle, blocking him from receiving the ball. The adults' attention is taken away from the action by the argument. Next thing we know, Kyle is on the ground crying out with Simon standing aggressively over him, screaming at him to get up and that he deserved that. Leanne looks on, horrified.

Kyle is lying on the floor of the gym. He looks badly hurt. Simon claims it was an accident when he went for the ball but the boy's dad calls him a liar and says he saw him going for his legs. Ken offers to call an ambulance while an angry Leanne pulls Simon to one side and tells him he'd better be telling the truth.

At the factory Izzy's also in agony after the fall from her wheelchair. She tries to put a brave face – she regularly dislocates her joints apparently – but on this occasion the pain looks really bad. Jenny appears clutching a pile of belongings and tells everyone that the girl who fled has been sleeping in the factory. Aidan goes to call the police but Eva quickly stops him. She says they won't be able to do anything and besides what would the O'Driscolls think if they see the police hanging about?

Anna's getting herself into a state in the Rovers. Why will nobody believe her that Phelan must have deliberately sabotaged the electrics just so that he and Jason could take over the job for Kevin? Well, that's probably because she refuses to tell anybody what he did to her. Anna storms off in a huff, leaving Eileen to tell Kevin that he doesn't half know how to pick them.

Back at the football, as Kyle is taken off by ambulance, Simon claims again that it was an accident but Kyle's father threatens that he and Leanne haven't heard the last of this. Leanne asks the Tom the manager if this sort of thing happens often. He says no but then again it's a contact sport. Simon said it was an accident and it's not like he's done this sort of thing before, is it? Leanne looks quite sick.

Tim's trying unsuccessfully to fit a large parcel into the postbox when Anna comes storming out of the Rovers. He asks her what's up and she goes off on one about Phelan and how nobody, including Kevin, will believe what a nasty piece of work he is. Tim also thinks she's overreacting but he offers to go and have a word with Kevin on her behalf. He'll just have to take Sally's parcel back to her first.

Beth and Kirk arrive at the Bistro. She's all dolled up and accuses Nick of having a cheeky feel when he pulls her chair out for her. He does his best to keep a straight face as he reassures her that she's quite safe where he's concerned.

Eva and Aidan are next to arrive at the Bistro. She's taken him there for a quiet word, away from everyone else at the factory.

In the Rovers, Phelan is putting on his charming act with Eileen, Jason and Kevin. Tim comes in and asks Kevin if he can have a word. He tells him it's personal and Phelan jokes you can get pills for that sort of thing.

Over by the bar Caz asks if anyone fancies a game of darts. She says she's not a bad player as there's not much else to do at the base of an evening, apart from crying into her pillow because she's missing Kate. Sinead sympathises – it must be hard being away from each other, especially with everything that's been going on recently, the stuff with Carla and that. "What stuff?" asks Caz. Sinead looks awkward and says she's best asking Kate. Caz says don't worry, she intends to.

Tim's talking to Kev about Anna. Kev is trying to be sympathetic but he's reaching the end of his tether, especially after what he went through with Jenny. Tim tells him not to give up – he and Anna are good together.

Ken has driven everyone home from the football. Leanne thanks him and Ken says he hopes Simon's friend will be OK. Simon yells that he's not his friend. They had been planning to go to the Bistro but now all bets are off. Simon says it's not fair, he didn't do anything wrong. Leanne replies that he never does but people still seem to get hurt. Simon yells back that it wasn't his fault. He hurls his kit bag at Ken's car before running off with Zeedan in hot pursuit. Leanne looks in despair at Ken and tells him she can't keep lying for Simon and protecting him. She says she just can't do this any more.

Caz is talking to Kate about what's been going on. When she's heard the whole story she tells her that she shouldn't have had to go through it all on her own. Kate replies that she didn't – she's made a couple of mates recently. One of these mates comes along just then and Caz looks distinctly put out by Sophie's appearance.

In the Bistro Eva has told Aidan the whole story about the girl in the factory. She's worried he's going to sack her but Aidan is prepared to forgive her. She has a kind heart and she's generous too, he tells her – the drinks are on her. Eva's worried Sean will kill her if he finds out she knew who stole her coat – Aidan promises not to tell if she doesn't.

Leanne is talking to Ken while they wait for Simon and Zeedan to reappear. She's really worried that things have gone too far now. He may be having counseling but this is more than just hitting someone in the playground. Ken suggests they wait to hear from Tom about the extent of Kyle's injuries before they do anything further.

Anna's at home, drowning her sorrows in a bottle of Pinot Grigio. Gary advises her to just ignore Phelan – he'll only be around for another week or so. As Gary leaves, Kevin arrives. He's come to tell her much the same thing. Anna says she'll try so Kevin suggests they go into town for something to eat. But Anna's not in the mood so Kevin gives up and leaves her to her moping.

Johnny turns up at the Bistro for a drink. Seeing Jenny sitting on her own he decides to join her. They exchange some friendly banter and he buys her another glass of wine. This could be the start of an interesting new relationship …

Kirk and Beth are tucking into their meal in the Bistro. At least Kirk is – Beth's not feeling too good as she's come out in a nasty rash all over her face. With rather bad timing Robert appears to ask if everything's OK with their meal.

Sinead and Ches are on their way home when Beth and Kirk come bursting out of the Bistro followed by Nick and Robert. Nick is sure her rash has nothing to do with them but Beth claims she was "pigging gorgeous" before she went into the Bistro. Robert reckons she's just looking for a way to get out of paying for the meal. Kirk takes Beth off to A and E.

Across the street, Zeedan finally spots Simon leaning against a wall. He tries speaking to him about what happened at the match. Simon says he already told them, he went for the ball. Zee says that he missed it big time. Simon shouts back that he doesn't want to talk about it and marches off. Zee says if he keeps on like this nobody will want to know him – even his mum's had enough. Simon replies that Kyle called Leanne a slag during the match and he's right. Zee demands Simon takes back what he said but Simon refuses. He tells Zee that he did it, he hurt Kyle and when he was stretchered off he was glad.

Nick comes back into the Bistro. When Jenny hears what happened with Beth she asks if it was something she ate and, if so, please give her compliments to the chef. She turns back to Johnny and asks why he's being so nice to her as he must have heard something about what she did. Johnny says she's not the only one who's made mistakes and buys them another round.

Anna's sitting at home with an empty wine bottle, feeling sorry for herself. Gary comes home and asks where Kevin is. Anna says she's fed up with Phelan ruining her life. Gary says that's only because she's letting him. He says Anna should tell Kevin the truth so that he'll understand. Anna's worried he might leave her if she does. Gary says he'll probably do that anyway if she doesn't.

Leanne comes home where Zeedan is waiting for her. Simon is in his room but before Leanne goes to see him Zee says he's got something to tell her. He says that Simon told him that Kyle had been winding him up and he said he wanted to hurt him and that he was glad about what he did. Even though she suspected it, Leanne is still shocked to hear this. Zee tells her it's not her fault but Leanne sobs that it's still her responsibility. She says she's tried everything but nothing works and Simon won't listen to anyone. She wonders what he'll do next time someone makes him angry – stab them? Leanne makes a decision: she's going to the police tomorrow to tell them what he's done.

Wednesday 10 February

It's first thing in the morning and Leanne is snappy and sharp with Simon, and tells him to get ready for school. He hands Eva a birthday card and then goes off to his room and Leanne, who had completely forgotten, apologises to her sister. Eva tells her she should listen to Simon and get his side of the story. Leanne, however, is in no mood to listen, she says she can't ignore what Simon said to Zeedan, and she must go to the police.

Nick and Robert are walking down the Street as Beth and Kirk come out of their house. Beth, with a face that is red and blotchy, says she's no better, she's been scratching all night. She tells Nick that, as it's coming up for Valentine's day, if she gets a free meal, plus drink, she'll call it quits. Robert tells her that whatever she reacted to, it wasn't his cooking. "Are you calling me a liar?" snaps Beth, then tells them stuff their free meal, ("I never offered," says Nick), and stomps off, saying she's calling the council.

Leanne and Simon are standing at the bus stop. "Mum, about Kyle......" Simon starts to say, but Leanne interrupts and says she doesn't want to discuss it. (Why not? She's not a very caring mother, is she? Well of course not, she's not his real mother!) The bus pulls up then, so she snaps at him to come straight home and marches off.

In the cafe, Alex is trying to persuade Anna to go and talk to Kevin, but she says she won't. Tim comes in then and sides with Alex, telling her to go and see Kevin.

Back at the flat, Leanne looks at the card that Simon gave Eva. He's signed it 'Big love, Simon' with lots of kisses. Leanne seems quite upset.

In the new florist shop, Tracy is still trying to educate Todd in the art of flower identification and arranging. She tells him that even Robert knows the difference. Todd remarks that Robert is now Mr. Perfect, and reminds Tracy how he slept with her worst enemy. "Me and Robert are fine," says Tracy, "end of!" But Todd continues to needle her about 'beautiful and successful Carla', which Tracy obviously does not like.

Dev is at the garage, talking to Kevin about buying a new car, when Anna comes along, so he makes a hasty departure. Anna then tells Kevin that she knows she's been a complete nightmare, but she's going to get her head together, so can they start with a clean slate? Kevin smiles and agrees, and they kiss.

In the bistro, Nick tells Robert they can't afford a visit from the food hygiene inspectors. Robert assures him that they're bullet proof, but Nick isn't so sure. (They should be, if they're serving food!)Just then Leanne comes in and Nick remarks that she looks shattered. She says it's nothing a double espresso won't sort out.

Izzy is wheeling herself down the Street, carrying some rolls of fabric, when she drops one. Erica rushes over to pick it up for her, and Izzy explains that Mrs. Connor lets her take roll ends home as she makes her own clothes. Erica says she'll help her carry them home if Izzy will teach her to sew sometime.

Robert goes into Tracy's shop to borrow her keys, he's forgotten his. She thinks she'll go home with him as they'll have the house to themselves, but Robert has other ideas. He's knackered and just wants to crash out for a while. Tracy is quite put out, as Todd smirks and tells her she must be losing her touch.

Leanne is in the bistro when the coach of the football team comes to see her to tell her that Kyle has had an operation, there was a double break in his leg. He'll be out of the team for six to eight months, or, possibly, will never play again. He tells Leanne to tell Simon not to blame himself.

Leanne is in the police station, talking to two officers about her 12 year old son.

Erica gets back to the shop to find Dev has returned and found it shut. He asks where she's been, but she doesn't want to tell him as she made a promise, and they bicker until she pulls out a £20 note and says that should cover the time she wasn't working! He protests that he doesn't want her money.

Sally is in the bistro, talking to Steph and running one of her campaign ideas, that of an all night bus service, past her. Steph doesn't seem that impressed, telling Sally that taxis are always available late at night. That's not the answer Sally wanted!

Kevin and Anna arrive at the bistro, and Kevin gets Sally and Tim to join them, although Anna doesn't look too thrilled at the prospect.

Leanne is still at the police station, talking about Simon. She tells the officers that, while she's not trying to justify what he's done, he's got a heart of gold really, he just gets angry sometimes. They ask when he first assaulted her, she tells them it was in June of last year, but wasn't really an assault, more of an outburst, he threw a tv remote at her. Then it went on to him saying nasty things, and then kicked her, and after that it all got worse until she ended up with a night in hospital. She explains she sent him to stay with his dad, but when he came back it was no better. She then tells them that he has now broken a lad's leg playing football, and it wasn't an accident.

In the bistro, Sally reckons she should have gone in for politics years ago. Tim reminds her that she hasn't won yet. Sally goes on and on about her 'demographic'. Anna wants to know what that means, and Sally tells her that she, for instance, is a hard-working, single mother, something that Sally herself was until a short time ago. She ponders on whether her slogan should be 'Been there – done it!' Tim remarks that she'll be having t-shirts made soon. She thinks that's a great idea. "Oh Sally, behave," says Kevin, but Anna agrees with Sally. "I can just see Tim and Kevin wearing one," she says, "Sally – been there, done it!" There's a slight pause, and then Kevin and Tim roar with laughter as Sally glares at Anna.

We then see a shattered and miserable-looking Leanne walking out of the police station.

Back in the bistro, Sally is still pontificating about being a councilor. "You see, listening is so important," she says to Anna, who retorts that she doesn't think Sally knows the meaning of the word, and goes on to say that the only thing Sally has talked about all evening is herself. When Tim protests that's a bit unfair, Anna asks what else they've talked about. She's met with silence. "I don't have to listen to this!" snaps Sally, angrily. "No? But listening is so important," says Anna, sipping her wine. Kevin says he thinks they should get the bill.

In the florist's, Tracy is looking thoughtful, as Todd prepares to leave. He tells her he was only joking about Robert, but she tells him she hasn't given it a minute's thought.

In the flat, Eva is testing Simon on some school work. "Where've you been?" he asks her. "Out," snaps Leanne. Then Simon asks if there's any news of Kyle, and Leanne tells him it's bad, Kyle may never play again. Simon says he must go and see him and say sorry. "Oh, you're sorry are you?" snaps Leanne, "yesterday you were glad!" Simon realises that Zeedan has told Leanne what he said. "I knew I shouldn't have said anything," he says. "No!" shouts Leanne, "you shouldn't have ruined that poor kid's life!" "I didn't mean it," says Simon, "not on purpose, I would never have hurt Kyle – you do believe me, don't you?" Leanne just stares at him and then storms out of the room, as Simon starts to cry.

It's morning and Leanne looks glum. Simon comes out of his bedroom saying he's not hungry and that he feels really hot. But Leanne's wise to the old hold-your-hot-drink-against-your-forehad trick. Simon pleads to be allowed to stay home for a duvet day with her. It's been ages since they snuggled up together to watch a film.

Kylie sneers at Beth because of her skin condition but David shushes her. He admits the dermatitis might not be Nick's fault. It might be David's.

We see one of Sal's election posters just before we see her. She approaches Dev and is sure he'll support her and put a poster in his window but Dev points out that as a shopkeeper, he should remain neutral. Sally's annoyed and stomps off while Erica tells Dev how pompous he sounded. Sally meets Izzy and seems to see her as another poster-child for a cause. Luckily, Izzy's wheelchair is quite fast.

Ken visits Leanne and assures her she only did what she had to do. She says Simon doesn't know she's been to the police. She plans to tell him after their film, when they're both relaxed. She doesn't want Simon locked up but Ken says they'll just give him a bit of a scare.

Beth claims she's in pain but she's getting no sympathy from Sally. Kirk's desperate to get her to stop scratching the rash. Sally says some people know rely pain, and looks pointedly at Izzy. Beth says she's reported the Bistro to environmental health. She can't understand why Sally's not supporting her.

Simon and Leanne settle down together on the sofa. Simon leans his head against Leanne.

In the pub, Michelle serves meals to Mary and Norris and comments that it's nice to see Mary smiling again. Todd arrives but tells Michelle he doesn't want a drink. He just wants to hide from his boss.

Nick and Audrey come in and order drinks. Nick tells Michelle that Carla seems to be recovering nicely. Michelle says she's going to a wedding fair on Monday - why doesn't she take Carla with her? Nick likes the idea of a night off from being Carla's slave. Ken arrives and Audrey goes to talk to him.

Izzy is clearly in pain as she goes into the cafe. Erica goes to help but Izzy protests. Erica tells her it's OK to ask for help sometimes. Izzy admits that her body is so inflamed at the moment she's having trouble coping with the pain. She's read that cannabis helps but that's not really an option so she's sticking with the prescribed medication. Erica has a friend who might be able to help.

Ken's told Audrey about Simon. Audrey is more worried about the strain on Ken and tells him he can't be the strong one all the time. With impeccable timing, Sally comes over to their table and orders Ken to get more posters done. Also, has he seen what's happened to Beth? That's a health and safety issue. She thinks the voters will identify with Beth. Ken's had enough of her Trump-style winging it on policy. He tells her he can't be her campaign manager any more. Oh no! He suggests other people - Dev (not interested); Yasmeen (way too busy); Norris . . . but before we can hear more, Audrey notices Beth's hair and asks her if she's had her highlights done in a different colour. She has.

The film finishes and Leanne tells Simon she has something important to tell him. Oops. Too late. The doorbell goes - it's the police. They just want to ask him a few questions.

As Simon is told he's not being arrested at this stage, he turns his full fury face on Leanne.

Just as David is telling Kylie he can't let Nick carry the can for his mistake, Audrey storms into the salon and demands to know whether David did a patch test on Beth with the new colour. He didn't. Audrey is more than annoyed. She points out that Beth's sensitivity is well documented on her notes.

Sally sits with Norris and Mary to talk about all the problems in the borough - potholes, roundabouts (though Mary points out he doesn't have a car). Sally tells them that she and Ken have parted company over political differences and she needs a new campaign manager. Mary and Norris immediately start vying for the position. Sally tells them to come round to her house tonight so they can discuss who will get the job.

Kylie points out how busy David's been and that he was the only stylist in the salon after Nessa left and Audrey was recuperating. Audrey admits taking her eye off the ball but she says they'll just have to tell Beth the truth, even though they might be liable for damages.

Tracy's trying to educate Todd in the business of flowers. Apparently funerals are far bigger money-spinners than even Valentine's Day but Todd can't manage an appropriate level of sympathy. Also, it seems that Tracy is also going to the wedding fair. (As the narrator said when Little Flick's mother and father got back to the station house: "Now THIS is going to be a surprise!") Todd starts to stir trouble, commenting on Robert willingly going to the fair with Tracy when Carla and Michelle are going to the fair. See, he might not have been drinking in the Rovers but he was paying attention.

Outside Leanne's as a horrified Ken and Zeedan watch, Simon is stuffed into a police car. From the back seat he shouts "Mum! Mum!"

David and Audrey go to the bistro to tell Nick who blotched Beth. Beth and Kirk come in, Beth talking loudly about her anaphylactic shock (allergic contact dermatitis, Kirk reckons). Kylie takes exception to her attitude and squares up to Beth just as an environmental health officer arrives.

In a police station interview room, Ken's playing the part of "appropriate adult."

Nick tells the inspector that the source of the skin condition has been identified and it was the dye, not the diet, what done it. That doesn't matter. The inspector says that now he's there he has to carry out an inspection. Customers overhear this and leave.

Leanne and Zeedan sit and wait for the police to interview Simon. She says Simon looked terrified but Zeedan thinks that might be a good thing. Kyle received a nasty injury but will be OK. What if the next person Simon batters isn't so lucky? Leanne admits she didn't just tell the police about Kyle, but about Simon's violence towards her. "What have I done?" she cries.

The end of the first episode.

Whilst I know we all like good stories the fall out sometimes can be hurtful. When he first joined Alex Bain was a delightful addition. Teenagers can be difficult and Simon's life has not been easy as we know. I just hope that in the future we can see some of his more playful and gentle side be redeveloped; at the moment he is morphing into the younger David Platt.

Never mind this is my update for episode 8838, written by Ella Greenhill and directed by Duncan Foster. Copyright remains the property of ITV Studios to whom many thanks.

We are at the police station where Zeedan and Leanne are waiting for Simon's interview to end. She is feeling guilty because Simon is still a child. And she will end up with the police thinking Simon is a violent thug. Leanne blames herself for doing it all wrong. Zeedan says she must tell Simon why she was forced to do it.

In the interview room Simon is being asked about circumstances at home. Ken is almost answering on his behalf. The policeman just wants to hear Simon's side of the story. Simon asks what Leanne has told them. Simon tells them that anger overwhelms him and he does not mean to hurt Leanne or anyone else. He cannot control it. He does not do it on purpose. Ken puts his arm around Simon as he breaks down in tears.

At the Bistro Beth (with Kirk) is staring at David (with Kylie) and asks how he is going to put it right. David refuses to do anything. Beth turns to Kirk for support. They all jump at one another and Nick tells them to calm down with Audrey telling David to get Kylie under control.

In the shop Eva is telling Erica that Leanne is a bit stressed so she is buying her some soft centre chocolates. Eva says she will be eating the nutty caramel! As Eva leaves Izzy rolls into the shop. After some hesitation Izzy asks if Erica can get her some cannabis. The pain is upsetting Izzy. And nothing else seems to be helping Izzy at the moment so she really wants to try it. Erica does not know how much but she takes £20 for now. Sean comes in as he has been sent for coffee by Alya (who must be around somewhere although invisible recently). He is unsure how Alya can drink so much coffee. They send Sean on his way so they can finish their discussion. Izzy says that as a mum she cannot take drugs - it is illegal, but she hates the pain and does not know what else to do.

Tim is stretched out on the sofa as Sally barrels into the house. She is not impressed by his afternoon lack of activity as he watches a programme about giant otters. Allegedly he finished his round in record time. She hopes he is not cutting corners. Anyway he has been to Freshco for a meal deal thingy including fizzy wine. Sally is now all smiles. The doorbell goes and Tim the assistant is sent to answer it. He announces Norris and Mary as visitors for the councilor. Norris has to tell her that there is definitely nothing right. Mary adds that they are experiencing work-related difficulties. They are poles apart in their political persuasions. Norris calls Mary impossible to work with. Which she calls rich coming from him. They bicker. Both Mary and Norris agree that Sally has to chose between them.

Back to the Bistro where Gail has arrived having been texted by Audrey. She wanted the fighting stopped and therefore summoned someone with experience! Beth merely wants an apology for dodgy hair dying. David responds that her head is to blame. Kirk chips in that she has to go to a special shop for bubble bath. Beth decides to go to the Weatherfield Gazette (other newspapers are available). Kylie decides to call her bluff. Audrey instructs David to apologise. David says he is sorry OK? He is sorry she had an allergic reaction and her face turned red and blotchy and she now looks stupid. Audrey asks if there is anything she can do for Beth. She wants free cuts and blow-dries for a year. Audrey agrees. Nick sends Kirk and Beth on their way.

Back at the police station Leanne is wondering how long answering a few questions takes. She wants to see her son. She takes a breath and calms down and worries about how they arrived at this pretty pass.

Mary and Norris are both trying to impress Sally - Mary makes an impromptu speech which gets ridiculed by Norris and Tim meanwhile wishes he was in another universe. Mary and Norris bicker and Sally says she must deliberate. Mary and Norris give each other the evil eye. Tim asks Sally what she is doing - she is making them sweat because people are happier if they feel they have fought for their success. Tim wants his house back! Sal returns to the pair and says that she has decided her new campaign manager is ... (Mary is smiling assuming she has won and Norris is downcast) ... is Mr Norris Cole. She turns to Mary and says that in the light of her recent fling with a married man, Sally did not want to be linked with such a sordid scandal. (Sally that was not very politic was it?). Mary is downcast and Norris is triumphant.

Back in a cell like room the police continue talking to Simon. They ask if meant to hurt Kyle. Simon says no. Simon says Kyle had the ball and Simon tackled him and he did not do anything wrong. Ken tells him to be honest. Simon gets angry and jumps up knocking over his chair and shouts at them all that it was an accident. Why won't people believe him? His bad temper and lack of control is obvious to all. Time for a break.

Simon leads Leanne, Ken and Zeedan out of the station. Simon does not want to know Leanne and Ken suggests that Simon should come back with him. The police have released him pending an investigation. Ken says Simon will not admit anything. They cannot understand why he would mess things up now. Ken tells Leanne she has done the right thing and that Simon will come round.

In the Rovers Sean is bringing Michelle up to date with the state of Beth's face. In the background Sally is having a good laugh and Sean cannot see her as a councilor. He thinks she is more of a dictator. Tim has overheard and tells Sean that this means a lot to Sal -she cares about people and this Street. Her controlling side is only because she cares. Tim continues that she loves everybody around here apart from the odd few. Sean looks shamefaced. Tim adds that she cares even when she is nagging in that high-pitched voice. Michelle confirms that Sal will get her vote and Sean adds his as well. Sal asks Tim to join the campaign strategy discussion; she wants a supportive husband!

Izzy is struggling with pain as Sean arrives with her drink. She says she is alright but turns down a night on the town saying she is a bit skint. He is surprised seeing she gave money to Erica. Billy is busy with old dears at the church and Sean feels abandoned. Sal appears and joins them. Izzy is clearly suffering as Sal says she is excited. She assumes they will vote for her. Sean senses an opportunity and will consider his option if Sal buys him a drink. He wants a double g&t but settles for a single. Izzy's phone beeps. Sean accuses her of a secret love interest. It is none of his business.

Mary disconsolately enters the Bistro and asks for a table for one. It has been a bad day but as her (fabled) mother says it is not the winning but the taking part which counts. Mary adds that Sally has made a BIG mistake. Big eared Gail wishes to know what mistake? Mary tells her the mistake is appointing Norris to lead the campaign. Gail will not say a word against Sally who is of course her best friend, but she would not jump at the idea of working with her. So the job is a poisoned chalice asks Mary. And the menu is for Valentine's Day which is a slap in the face for single women like them. Michael and Brendan cannot tame independent women like them - they should propose!

Ken and Simon return home and cross paths with Norris who hopes Ken has no hard feelings as Norris has replaced him as campaign manager as he is sure Sally needs someone who can lead her to victory. Ken assures him he is perfect. Norris also wants to know why the police took Simon away earlier. Tracy has emerged from number one, tells Norris it is none of his business and he should jog on. Tracy wants Ken to go for a drink - but Ken says Simon is staying for a while and sends Simon for a small chips. Tracy is annoyed because Ken does not buy her chips when she is arrested. (Different rules for children and grandchildren - we all know that). Tracy tells Ken not to let Simon watch anything violent and head off to the Rovers.

In the Rovers back yard Erica hands Izzy a little packet the latter expresses thanks and is sorry for the trouble caused. Izzy says it all feels wrong - but the pain has been unbearable.

Eva, Zeedan and Leanne are together with Eva seeking to reassure Leanne that Simon will not hate her forever. Leanne is going to bed when the door buzzer goes.

At number one Ken is lost in thought - but his gaze turns to Deirdre - how he misses her in these difficult situations. Tracy returns from the Rovers where it was DULL. Only Sally holding court. She wants to know if Ken can look after Amy on Monday night as she and Robert want to stay over at the hotel. Tracy tries to make a joke of Simon but it falls flat and Ken says he could do without her sense of humour at the moment. Ken was distressed by Simon - lying as far he could tell - very distressing. Ken thinks Young Offenders may be a possibility - but if Simon really did hurt Kyle on purpose then perhaps that is the right solution.

Back at the flat Leanne, Eva and Zeedan watch a recording of the incident which Tom (Kyle's father) has brought round and clearly the broken leg was an accident. Now Leanne does not know what to do; they explain to Tom that Leanne has reported Simon to the police and so they will now have to disclose that it was an accident. Zeedan does not understand why Simon had claimed to have done it when he hadn't. None of them really grasp it. Leanne in particular should have believed Simon - but did not. She observes that Simon will never forgive her.

Roll titles.

The circus around Sally is fun at the moment. The subtitlers think she is going to be a counselor which is a lot different to a councilor. Whilst there is some humour there it would be nice if she actually became a good people's representative - not an Alf replacement but someone who does care for the community and looking after local matters in a public spirited way is important and deserves to be taken seriously as well. Sally Dynevor has the ability and range to do it justice and I hope they will give her a chance to be serious as well as do the comedy - which she and Tim seem to have in spades. Tim's ability to put Sean on the straight and narrow was also particularly well done.

See you next week.

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Tracy say on Friday's episode that she and Robert were going to stay overnight after the Wedding Fair? That's what I remember. But today, Robert's on the phone to the hotel making plans to book a posh suite and asking them to keep it a secret from his wife who is booked in as a vendor at the fair. Todd and Tracy arrive back at Number 1 with Todd whinging about being left in the shop with no stock, depleted after Valentine's Day. They come through to the living room. Robert lies that he was on the phone to a mate. Tracy grills him about the mate but he doesn't bite. She snaps and orders him to take the flower arrangement she's brought with her to the car. Todd assures Tracy that he was only winding her up over Carla and there's no evidence that Robert's having an affair but Tracy's hackles and suspicions are up. She thinks he's organizing another rendez-vous and if he is, she's going to make sure they both pay for it.

Michelle finds the remnants of Nick and Carla's Valentine's dinner when she arrives to pick Carla up. Nick asks after Steve and we get a long, sad face on Michelle along with a complaint that Steve didn't send anything and only called to apologize before going to a party, leaving her to work in the pub as usual. Are we leading up to something, here? Nick doesn't think Carla is up to the wedding fair, still being in a lot of pain. Carla comes in and assures him she's fine, painkillers do the job though he worries that she's taking too many. She's coming and she needs the day off, surrounded by wedding finery and a soft, comfy hotel bed at the end of it. Nick tells Michelle to look after Carla who goes off to get showered.

Eileen complains to Jason that her cupboard doors are broken. Jason is too busy to sort them out for her. Phelan jokes that it's typical of having a builder in the family. Anna passes by behind them, throwing a sneer at Phelan's back, which Anna catches. At another table, Eva has told Aidan all about Marta. She's worried about her, now she ran off. Marta has no cash or food. Aidan suggests that maybe she went to a homeless shelter which seems like a good idea, so Eva picks up her phone to find some and call them to ask if anyone has seen Marta. Izzy comes in and, spotting them, asks if they like her hair which is in a bit of an updo rather than hanging down and she seems much perkier today.

At Number 1, Leanne has brought the video to show Ken and feels terribly guilty. Simon comes in and upon hearing the news, looks at her with contempt. She apologizes again and says she's taking it to the police and will fix it. If looks could kill.

Back to the cafe, Anna is chatting to Norris who tries to find out which way she leans, politically. Sally has been asking Eileen about (I think) Valentine's day and cards. Eileen recalls she only got one from Todd, Jason having been too busy and when Sally asks if Michael got her anything, she murmurs it was a small, very small bunch of flowers. Tim got Sally some corner shop flowers. The pair of them commiserate about men not getting the hint about proper gifts. Eileen then complains that she's doing all the work at Streetcars with both owners out of the country. Sally look thoughtful. Eileen leaves and Sally sits with Norris. He tells her about an idea about a photo opportunity stressing her lifestyle and family. He reckons voters want a woman they can identify with. His idea seems to be "housewife" rather than someone that holds down a full time job as well as doing family duties but never mind. We see Tim come in and notice them. When he hears them talking about a photo shoot, he backs up really quickly and leaves, bemusing Anna. Norris promises to take the photos himself on his tablet, it's got enough pixels and a photoshop app.

Tracy comes into the hotel lobby and finds Robert talking to the desk clerk about their room which, we hear, is ready for the taking now. He covers when Tracy approaches and leads her off. She questions whether he was flirting with the clerk. Of course not! He asks what her problem is. Michelle and Carla come in the main door. That's Tracy's problem. Tracy goes over to them and it's all very awkward. Robert even looks uncomfortable when he finds out Carla and Michelle are staying over. Tracy and Robert ask each other if the other knew Carla and Michelle were coming. Robert asks Tracy if something's going on but she retorts "you tell me!" and then goes to set up her stall.

Jason catches Phelan unloading some cupboard doors. Seems they're old stock that a company was getting rid of and he thought they would suit for Eileen. Jason mentions Michael's good intentions which amuses Phelan. By the end of the conversation, Phelan has persuaded Jason to let him fix the cupboards, resulting in brownie points for Jason. Izzy is watching from across the road. Jason notices and asks if she's all right. Izzy tells Jason he's an idiot for employing a man that will likely wreck his business. It's clear Jason doesn't take her warnings seriously. He probably should.

Anna mithers Tim in the cafe. He's avoiding the photo shoot. Eileen arrives and when questioned, mentions that the electrical work will be done by the end of the week. Anna's happy to hear that. Tim hides behind his newspaper when Sally comes in but she comes straight over.

Robert has finished helping Tracy set up and now thinks he's probably surplus to requirements but Tracy quickly insists he stay with her just as Michelle and Carla arrive through the door to start browsing the stalls. The two women start looking at things heading away from Tracy's stall. A customer irritates Tracy by asking if she does cakes and is given short shrift. Robert decides to go off and have a look around but she won't have it.

Leanne has done what she says and tells Simon the police aren't going to take it any further. Simon still refuses to go home with her. Ken does say he can stay but ... Simon interrupts and says he's not going home. Leanne keeps trying to talk to him but he accuses her of nearly putting him in a young offender's prison. At least there's still someone he respects because he actually asks Ken if he can leave the room and does when given permission. Leanne is bereft. Ken advises that Simon just needs time. In the other room, Simon calls his father.

In the cafe, Nick is sitting with Alex chatting about Valentine's cards. Turns out, Alex got 7, one from his mother, one from Anna and 5 from mystery admirers. Nick is astounded and impressed at all those admirers. Cheeky lad tells Nick there's a lot of him to admire! Jason and Todd are standing by the door, Todd telling Jason he could make Eileen happy with a card but Jason has a better idea. Kitchen cupboards. Eva's still calling round to places to see if she can find Marta. No luck, so far. Aidan arrives and tells her he covered for her with Johnny.

Sally and Tim are dressed in good clothes, standing in the kitchen, she with a wooden spoonful of soup. He's objecting to the whole set up, it's fake and people will know it. He points out they never cook together but Sally badgers him into smiling and tasting the soup. The photo is taken but Norris doesn't look impressed with the results. He suggests a photo of them relaxing in the conservatory so she rushes off to change into appropriate clothing. Tim sighs.

Robert is talking to a punter who's moaning about the price of flowers. He finally escapes by pulling Tracy over and taking off. She half-listens to the man who could bore for England while, with a worried look, watching Michelle and Carla who are wine tasting. Michelle wonders if Carla should be drinking while on painkillers. Carla is looking a bit wobbly and is in a bit of pain. She left her painkillers in the room, though. She insists that she'll be fine with a pill and a lie down and doesn't need Michelle to go with her. Tracy sees all this, shoves a business card at the man and rushes out the door after Carla. Carla walks across the lobby on the phone to Nick, reassuring him she's ok. She gets into the lift, watched by Tracy who then goes to the desk to find out what room number Carla's in. Because the clerk does remember seeing Tracy with the other two earlier, she does tell her the room number. Tracy heads to the lift as well. Once she's out of sight, Robert comes across with the overnight bag and asks if it can be taken to his and Tracy's room then asks after the chef at the hotel, an old friend of his who happens to be female. Upstairs, Tracy follows Carla to her room and pushes her inside once the door is open.

Sally and Tim are now sitting in the conservatory. Tim, wearing a summery Hawaiian type shirt, is sipping a beer. Norris isn't so sure that's the image they want even though Tim insists he likes beer. Sally agrees with Norris, however. They discuss other scenarios such as a summer barbeque. Tim puts his flip flop down. He's not going outside and freezing in the February air dressed like a beach boy. He complains that it's all a set up and they never do the things they're trying to convince the voters to believe. He thinks it would make more sense to show him up a ladder washing windows. Norris suggests a compromise would be a hard working Sally, relaxing in the conservatory while waiting for her husband to come home. This suits Sally very well so Tim makes his getaway to change into something warmer.

Carla digs in her bag for her painkillers. Tracy grabs them and asks her where Robert is. Carla doesn't know what she's on about. Tracy starts to rant about Robert having an affair with Carla which is stoutly denied. Carla is getting desperate for the pills and if Tracy doesn't hand them over, she'll call the police. They scuffle over the phone and Carla's arm is bruised a bit. Tracy is determined to confront Robert when he walks through that door no matter that Carla insists he's not expected.

Ken is trying to placate Leanne with platitudes about how difficult parenting is. He admits he's made plenty of mistakes. Her phone rings and she sees it's Peter who has heard Simon's side of the story. Of course he doesn't know it all and Leanne insists she was trying to help. She hands the phone over to Ken.

Carla tells Tracy that Robert loves her and she (Carla) loves Nick. The idea of the affair is all in Tracy's head. She asks again for the painkillers. Tracy finally asks about the night at the casino. Carla tries to pretend she doesn't know what she's talking about but Tracy reveals she was in the kitchen when Carla and Robert were talking about that night in the bar of the Bistro. Busted!

Tvor

Written by Joe Turner and directed by Gill Wilkinson

Carla tries denying she slept with Robert but Tracy calls her liar - she heard everything in the Bistro. Tracy's planning to confront Robert the moment he comes into the room and refuses to believe Carla when she insists he's not coming. For a moment Tracy appears to show some compassion when she asks if Carla's in pain but it's only so she can take the painkillers and put them in her own handbag.

In the Rovers, Tim's grumbling about having to pose for pictures with Sally for her political campaign while Sinead's feeling nervous about her forthcoming photo shoot for Underworld. Aidan comes in and offers to buy Eva a drink. She's been trying to track down Marta who broke into the factory, but to no avail.

Robert bumps into Michelle at the wedding fair. He's looking for Tracy who seems to have disappeared.

Up in Carla's room Tracy's phone rings. It's Robert but she ignores the call and continues to interrogate Carla who finally admits she slept with Robert. Tracy wants to know why. Carla tries to explain it was a one-off, it didn't mean anything but it was the night she found out about Johnny. She begs Tracy to give her the pills but Tracy refuses.

Eileen comes home to find Phelan in her kitchen, fixing her cupboards. Now he's there, he might as well finish the job she tells him. She's clearly rather pleased.

Tracy helps herself to a bottle of wine out of Carla's mini bar while she continues to pump her for more information. She's convinced Carla only slept with Robert to spite her. Carla says if she heard everything that went on that night she'd know that Carla tried to persuade Robert not to buy into the Bistro but that he refused to leave Weatherfield and the only reason for that is because he loves Tracy.

Leanne goes round to Ken's to see Simon. She knows Simon's rung his Dad. She tells Simon that she's sorry for calling the police, it was the hardest thing she's ever done but she didn't know what else to do. Ken tries to back Leanne up but Simon can barely look at her. Peter has said Simon can go and stay with him for half term. Despite what happened last time he went Simon has decided anything is better than staying at home with Leanne. Ken has offered to drive him down so they both go off to pack their bags.

Tracy is enjoying the fact that Carla is in pain but she says the only question now is how she makes her suffer some more. Her phone rings again and this time she answers it. On the other end Robert asks where she is. Tracy says she needed a break. Robert tells her he wanted it to be a surprise – he's booked them the best room in the hotel and wangled them a gourmet dinner thanks to his friend. He says it wasn't easy keeping it a secret as Tracy is a deeply suspicious woman. Robert tells Tracy he loves her and she replies that she loves him too and she'll be down in a minute. The moment she comes off the phone Carla asks for her pills but Tracy hasn't done with her yet. She tells Carla that, whatever happens, she believes she and Robert will be fine. But as for Carla and Nick, she just doesn't see that having a happy ending …

While Simon's upstairs packing Ken talks to Leanne. Eva rings and says she'll pop round to say goodbye to Simon. Ken's pleased as he's worried about Leanne and doesn't want her to be on her own.

Sinead's still in the Rovers, talking about her photo shoot. Beth thinks it's a brilliant opportunity but Chesney doesn't appear nearly so keen.

Meanwhile Aidan has discovered that there's more to Eva than he realised. She cares about people, not just her hair and nails. Eva describes herself as a multi-tasking-renaissance woman. Aidan smiles in agreement.

Sally comes into the Rovers. She's on the lookout for prospective voters and turns her attention to Steph and Andy who are just trying to have a quiet drink. In an attempt to get her off their backs Andy says he's sure they'll support her policies, whatever they are. In that case, Sally says, they'll agree with the need for a compulsory tidy gardens contract.

At the wedding fair Robert is still waiting for Tracy when Michelle comes along. He asks if they're planning on eating there this evening and tells her that he and Tracy are staying over. Michelle says in that case they'll order room service. Robert asks where Carla is. Michelle tells him she didn't feel well and has gone to their room. Robert says Tracy's done the same thing. Michelle says she'll go and check on Carla and instructs him to stay there.

Michael arrives home with a bag of chips as a treat for Eileen. He's most put out to find Eileen relaxing on the sofa with a glass of wine while Phelan has just finished fixing her kitchen cupboards. Michael was planning to do the job but he just had to get his toolbox sorted first. Eileen tells him he missed the bus on that one. Michael glares at Phelan.

Eva has come round to say goodbye to Simon. Leanne asks for a hug but Simon says he can't as he has his backpack on. She tells him she loves him and will be counting the days until he comes back. Simon replies that he might not come back. Ken hands Leanne the keys so she can take care of Eccles until Robert and Tracy get home.

Tracy's still holding court in Carla's room. She says she'd like to see Nick's face when he hears that Carla slept with his chef. Carla tells Tracy he's not going to find out. Tracy ignores this and says it's not just his chef but his business partner as well. She says Nick will remember that Carla tried to persuade him not to sell to Robert. Tracy tells Carla she's enjoying this because, for once, she's in charge. Of course, there is a way that Nick could be spared the horrible truth, Tracy says but before she can tell Carla what this is, Michelle comes in and wants to know what's going on. Tracy claims she found Carla by the lifts. She didn't want to leave her on her own so she helped her back to the room. As she leaves, Tracy tells Michelle and Carla that Roberts booked them into the bridal suite so they might see them at breakfast. The moment Tracy has left, Michelle asks Carla what really want on.

Back in the Rovers, Sally is continuing to bore Steph and Andy rigid about her tidy gardens scheme. Across the room Tim observes that Sally's a bit like a shark. Kev agrees that once she's sunk her teeth in … Sean suggests giving her a bash on the nose. He read somewhere that's what you should do in the event of a shark attack.

Beth's still talking about Sinead's modeling. Sinead points out it's only for one catalogue but Beth's dead proud of her. Sinead's worried about Chesney but he jokes that if it turns out his girlfriend's a supermodel he'll just have to live with it.

Anna comes into the Rovers in a cheerful mood. She joins Kev and Tim at the bar.

Meanwhile Phelan comes in with Michael and Eileen. As Eileen goes to get the drinks, Michael speaks to Phelan. He tells him that, from now on, he'll take care of any odd jobs that need doing at home.

At the bar Anna asks Kev how Jason's getting on. He says he'll be done in a couple more days. Anna says that's very good news as she glances over at Phelan.

When Sally asks Andy and Steph if they're planning on having a family, Sean comes to their rescue and tells Sally that she can't do any more "politicking" in the pub. Sally complains that he's banning free speech and she'll be taking up with the management. She instructs Tim to drink up as they're going home. "One bang on the nose is it?" Tim asks Sean, checking on his advice about how to deal with sharks.

Tracy emerges from the hotel lift where she finds Robert waiting for her in the lobby. She tells him she had to sort something out. He works out she must have been with Carla so she tells him the same version she gave to Michelle and is all sweetness and light and looking forward to the romantic evening Robert has lined up. She tells him he's a really sneaky man before giving him a kiss.

Back in their room, Michelle and Carla are planning to go home. Carla has told Michelle the full story of what went on and Michelle says she feels like smashing Tracy's face in. Carla tells Michelle that Tracy can destroy her whole life, just like that.

Wednesday 17 February

Michelle and Carla are up in Carla's flat. Nick calls to say he's coming over, and Carla is worried. Michelle tells her to just say she missed him, and tell him she's fine, so, when he arrives, that's what she does. Nick asks if they saw Tracy, and Michelle tells him they did, but didn't really have a chance to chat to her. Nick then says he has to rush off for a meeting with Robert.

Sinead sees Chesney walking down the Street and rushes over. She tells him she's off to another shoot, and he says she might get spotted by a talent scout. She laughs and then asks if he'll go with her.

Tracy and Robert arrive home where Amy is eating breakfast. Tracy is full of how they got upgraded and what a wonderful room it was. She tells Amy she's brought her a present, and gives her the tiny bottles of hotel bathroom freebies, shampoo, shower gel etc. Amy is NOT impressed. Robert then rushes off to meet Nick.

Jason and Pat go into the cafe, and Jason tells Anna it's Pat's last day. "Ah, what a pity," she says, sarcastically, "poor Pat, on the dole!" Jason remarks that he knows she's not Pat's biggest fan. "She used to be, back in the day," says Pat, "she used to laugh at all my jokes, but that was when I was a big somebody."

Mary is in the Kabin, where Norris tells her he's not going to stock the magazine about the paranormal any more. She says that just because Brendan was a big fake, it doesn't mean she's lost her interest in the paranormal. Gail comes in and looks at the local paper headline, it seems that Freshco are going to open a superstore, and Norris isn't happy about it. "You're piddling in the wind if you think you can stop it," says Mary, but Norris reckons he's a doer, he makes things happen, that's why Sally chose him as her campaign manager.

Carla is chatting to Michelle, she says it just comes down to a simple choice, either she tells Nick or Tracy does. Michelle thinks it might just be a wind up, Tracy might be trying to make Carla sweat, why would she wait 4 weeks after finding out about her and Robert. Tracy has said there's another option, but Carla doesn't know what it is. Michelle reckons Tracy's going to start demanding a load of cash. Carla doesn't care about that, but can't risk Nick finding out from Tracy, and wonders if she should just tell him, explaining that it was just a meaningless, pointless one-off. "With his chef," adds Michelle. "He's going to dump me," says Carla.

Sinead and Chesney are at the photo shoot. Aidan is there and remarks that people are fed up seeing stick-thin models. Always defensive, Beth demands to know if he's saying Sinead is fat. He says he thought it would be best to use a real woman, and one who actually makes the underwear.

Eileen comes into the cafe and thanks Phelan for the wonderful job he's done on her kitchen, it now looks like a show home. He says it was worth it to spend an evening in her company, and, continuing in creepy, sucking-up mode, says that she and Jason are two of the nicest people he's ever met, and he's going to miss them. Eileen asks what he's going to do, and he says he's sure something will turn up, he has a friend in Bournemouth who has some labouring work. Just then Kevin comes in to say goodbye, and thanks Phelan for the work he's done for him.

The O'Driscolls arrive at the photo shoot, they're interested to see their underwear being modeled.

Tracy is arranging flowers outside her shop when Carla comes along. She tells Tracy that she's not going to be pushed around by her any more, she's going to tell Nick everything!

When she arrives at the bistro, Gail is in there, talking to Nick, and then turns and tells Carla that she's just suggested something for the wedding, adding that they're all looking forward to it and she's sure that Carla will make her son very happy. Carla looks increasingly agitated and stressed, as Gail continues to witter on. "Gail, will this take long?" she asks eventually, so Gail gets the hints and leaves, saying that Nick will tell her all about it. Carla then turns her attention to Nick, saying that she has something important to tell him, and thinks they should be alone. Just at that moment, Robert comes into the bar, saying that he wants Nick to come and look at a website they might order from. Nick goes off to the office with him, telling Carla he'll just deal with that first.

Aidan tells Sinead that the photographer was really pleased with her. Beth says that if she hits the big time she'll need a manager – and she's volunteering!

Eileen tells Jason that he should keep Phelan on. "What's it go to do with you? Do you fancy him or something?" asks Jason. Eileen scoffs that of course she doesn't, he's just a good worker and they should hang on to him. Jason points out that they hardly have enough work for one, never mind two. Phelan then comes in and hands Jason a business card of a developer in Salford who might be able to put some work his way, and then he can put some Pat's way. He then says he must get going, and hugs Eileen goodbye.

Norris is complaining to Mary that he can't get hold of Sally, even though he's rung her and rung her. He's written a letter to the editor of the Gazette, complaining about the proposed new superstore, and he wanted her to look over it before he sent it on her behalf. Mary tells him that he's not a lackey, if he feels that strongly he should just send it. Norris thinks she's right and puts the letter in an envelope and goes off to post it.

In the bistro, Sinead and Chesney are having a post photo-shoot celebratory lunch with Aidan, the photographer and the O'Driscolls. Steph comes for the order, and warns Sinead to be careful, she'll never know where those photos might end up.

Nick comes out into the restaurant and sits down with Carla. He's in a good humour, and tells her that Robert has really injected some energy into the place. Then he asks her what she wants to talk about, and holds both of her hands. Before she can speak, Steph comes over and asks him to go and give them a hand, so he has to leave her yet again.

In Eileen's house, Jason is just finishing a phone call. Then, grinning, he tells Eileen he can't believe it, and says he's now going to ring Pat.

Alya arrives home, it's her birthday and her grandparents present her with an antique sewing machine, which she's really pleased with. She tells them that her friend Rana has called her to wish her happy birthday and she's going to go out to dinner with her.

As Sinead and Chesney prepare to leave the bistro, she tells him that the photographer has offered her another modeling job, for a knitwear catalogue. "Are you going to do it?" asks Chesney, looking worried. Sinead says of course she will, why wouldn't she? Chesney says he thought this was just a bit of fun. Sinead agrees that it is, but the money will come in handy.

Tracy comes into the bistro, sits at the bar and orders a drink, and looks over to see Carla sitting on her own. Nick then comes back and sits down with Carla again. She takes a deep breath. "Nick I've done something bad," she says. "What have you bought?" laughs Nick. She tells him she hasn't bought anything, and this is serious. Then, before she can say another word, he says he's got something to show her and pulls a little box out of his pocket. This was what Gail had been talking to him about earlier. They are sapphire and diamond earrings, which his dad gave to Gail before they were married, and he wonders if she'll wear them for the wedding, they're old, borrowed and blue. "They're hideous!" says Carla, picking up the box. Nick laughs, and says he'll tell her that Carla has some others to wear for the wedding. As they talk about Gail, and how she's accepted Carla into the family, Tracy looks across, nervously. "So come on," says Nick, "what's the big confession?" Carla loses her nerve then. "You're right," she says, "I've been flexing the plastic again."

Kevin goes into the cafe, where Anna is counting the takings. He's in a good mood, his new business is up and running. Anna is in a good mood too, because Phelan has gone, presumably, so she says she thinks they should celebrate.

Phelan, however, has just arrived to see Jason, who tells him he's hired! He rang the number Pat gave him earlier and they'd just been let down by someone. They're converting a school house into flats and they start tomorrow!

Back in the bistro, Tracy goes and sits down with Carla. "I knew you'd bottle it," she says. Carla tells her she couldn't do it to Nick because she loves him and she wants to marry him. She points out that Tracy loves Robert, so why would she want to go and ruin everything? Tracy tells her that the only thing Carla can do now is to move, to sell up and move away, to leave her and her boyfriend to get on with their lives. Carla says that she owns the factory, Nick owns the bistro, how could they move away? Tracy thinks Carla should persuade Nick to sell his share to Robert, who already owns 20 percent anyway. "You've really thought this through, haven't you?" says Carla. "Persuade Nick to sell up and leave town, or your relationship with him is over," says Tracy, and leaves the table. Carla sits looking stunned.

Anne Logan

Friday 19 February

Hello,

Carla's told Michelle all about Tracy blackmailing her. Maybe it is time for her to leave town . . .

Anna goes to visit the new garage. She's all perky and cheerful and wishes Kevin luck.

Jason brings Phelan a cuppa but lets him know that from now on, it'll be Phelan making the brew. Phelan reckons they'll make a good team now that he's bringing his contacts to Jason's business.

Beth's trying to describe a dream to Chesney and Sinead as they cross the road to work in the rain. Sinead is teased about her new life as a model. Johnny and Kate arrive at the same time.

Sally's also gone to look at the new garage, but she reckons she would have made it look more feminine. Sophie arrives with a copy of the Gazette featuring a story quoting Sally's "PR guru" Norris Cole on what she thinks of plans for a new, expanded Freshco. The story says she opposes the plans because of the effect a bigger supermarket will have on local businesses. It makes the point that she's married to window cleaner so knows about small businesses. Plus the picture makes her nose look big! "Wait till I get my hands on Norris!" she fumes.

Izzy's zipping along the pavement with Jake on her knee and stops for a chat with the new, happy Anna. Anna tells her how glad she is that Phelan has gone. But behind her, Izzy can see Phelan looking at Jason's van. She points him out.

Sally catches up with Norris and reads him the riot act. He is never to publish anything without her permission again. And he won't use unapproved photos. "And you're my campaign manager, not my PR guru!" When she's finished with Norris she sends a text to Michelle asking if she can have a pow wow.

Michelle is a bit bemused by the request. She and Carla sneer and what must be Sally's political plans. Michelle goes off to make arrangements with Sally and Carla chats with Nick. She asks if he ever feels crushed. Because everywhere she looks all she sees if things that remind her of every bad thing that's happened to her. She feels like running away and tells Nick she'd like to move away. She asks him to think about it.

Anna rages over to Phelan and demands to know what he's doing there. He tells her he'll be sticking around a while longer. He and Jason drive off leaving Anna looking sick.

In the cafe, Izzy tries to ring Gary to tell him about Phelan. Cathy's very sympathetic even though she doesn't really know what's going on.

Over at the bistro, Nick tells David what Carla said. David points out that Carla seems to try to run away every six months. While Leanne looks over the proposed new menu, Nick asks Johnny what he likes about being in business. Johnny likes the fact that he answers to nobody and he especially likes the challenge.

Izzy tells Gary that Jason's given Phelan a job. They're in the pub and Sophie hears this and is puzzled. "What happened?" she asks.

Sally comes out from what appears to have been a friendly chat with Liz and Michelle. She tells Tim and Norris that she wants to see them at Streetcars at quarter to five and they'd better be on time. "Wear a nice shirt," she tells Tim. He asks if they're having a night out.

In the factory office, Johnny is thrilled by the unretouched pictures of Sinead in some smalls. He's sure the O'Driscolls will love them, too.

Nick's surprised to see Carla in the pub. She tells him she was sick of the sight of the four walls of the flat. He asks if she was serious about going away. She was. He tells her things are pretty good for him at the moment but he promises to give it some serious thought.

Alya's in the bistro waiting for someone. Her grandparents come in to book a table for later and then her friend arrives. Zeedan is behind the bar and you can hear the clanging as his jaw drops to the floor. Robert tells him to put his tongue back in.

Liz is on the switch at Streetcars, moaning to Sally about Fat Brenda not being there. Norris and Tim come in and Sally misquotes the Bible and makes her big announcement - Tim is now an equal partner in Streetcars!

Anna is still furious. She takes a hammer to Jason's van. Gary and Izzy are horrified. David is amused. Phelan refuses to let Jason ring the police, sounding very reasonable about it. Anna leaps on him, hitting and hitting, though luckily she's had the hammer taken off her. Kevin sees all this going on.

More later.

The end of the first episode.

Margaret Carr

This is episode 8843; the writing from the pen of Jan McVerry; the director was Gill Wilkinson; rights remains the property of ITV to whom many thanks. Any additional snide comments are entirely my own addition!

Action opens outside Jason's yard where little Anna is laying into Phelan quite furiously. He does not reply in kind and it takes Gary, Kevin and David to pull Anna away from Phelan who says he returned from a job to see Anna smashing up his van. Izzy watches from the sidelines. Anna thought he would be gone and she wishes he had drowned in Dubai. Phelan needs the work and the money - and Jason has got it. Phelan says he will call the police if Gary does not take her home. She says Craig and makes it clear he is not to tell Faye about this.

In the famous Streetcars armchair Tim needs plenty of sugar in his cuppa for the shock - why does Sally want to do this to him - he likes his window round. Sally points out that the round is cold in winter and now he will be sitting in a nice warm office with biscuits to eat. Liz tells him that Lloyd is sorry to be selling up.

Norris observes the electorate prefer blue-collar, Sally says cabbies can be pretty common and tells Norris to pipe down. As everyone else departs Sally is in control of the switch until Fat Brenda appears for her shift. Norris tells her that she lacks a consistent political message and she just blows with the wind. If he cannot show her loyalty Sal tells him ... on your bike Norris. At which Red Two comes on the radio.

In the Bistro Yasmeen and Sharif are reporting on their walk to Alya and her old friend Rana (who is a refugee from the sadly canceled " Cuffs" but looking far more glamourous in this role) whom we have never met before. They saw a heron or a cormorant on the canal. Nick asks Andy what he wanted to do when he grew up - Leeds prop forward and there is still time! Zeedan emerges from kitchen and delivers the food to the two girls. Zeedan turns his attention on Rana - but she seems keener on Andy. Rana invites Alya's grandparents and Zeedan says he is working - but she ignores him and the older couple go off to their table. Rana tells Zeedan the food tastes good and then she asks handsome Andy to stick a voddy in her drink; so clearly she likes a nice drink.

Back at Eileen's, Eileen, Michael (who has appeared out of nowhere), Phelan and Jason are discussing sweet little Anna with the squeaky voice who appears to have become completely unhinged according to Jason. Phelan says he would never raise his hand to a woman. Michael is ordered to pour a brandy. Michael gets pushed to one side as EIleen sets about repairing Phelan's lip.

Tracy is consulting a magazine until Rita says the lending liary is closed. Norris comes in and Rita senses he needs her care and attention so Tracy is given short shrift.

Gary sees Izzy and Jake into Anna's living room and they ask Faye if she has seen the dumper truck. Anna reaches for a bottle of wine and pours herself a large glass. Faye is sent to give Jake a bath. They discuss Anna's predicament.Gary observes that if Phelan is going to be around Anna has to get a grip or Phelan will win public sympathy. Izzy concurs with that view. Anna stomps out to get some fresh air.

In the Rovers Liz is talking Tim round on the cab business and Sal has made her mind up - Sean observes "And that lady is not for turning"!. Liz says not many wives would risk everything on their husband. She could go for a cruise around the Med or swan around in Louboutins adds Sean. Liz tells Tim he should thank his lucky stars. Tim says what Sally really wants is a respectable bloke on her arm - trophy male. Tim thinks twice and says he will drink his pint in silence.

Sinead arrives with a brown envelope. Sean insists on seeing the contacts and they are amazing - he calls her stunning. Chesney looks on gloomily. He grabs them to prevent Tim seeing them. Liz reckons Sinead looks good. And next month she has a runway show in Nottingham - real clothes for real women. It is all to maximise her potential. And that Tim is what a real trophy babe looks like!

Norris is complaining that he was dismissed like an underling.Rita locks the shop door. Norris continues to complain about her being Erinockovich with the grace of Ann Widdecombe! They disagree over Emily's view of the situation - Norris's view is that the voters deserve better.

David arrives at the Bistro responding to Nick's text . They sit in a corner and pass Yasmeen observing that Rana has some spirit and she is certainly cheering up Alya. Rana can come round when she likes. We switch to Rana who is recounting being whisked off to Paris, Mandarin Oriental, by some man who has booked separate rooms because he respects her. We revert to Nick and David. David says that if could walk away from Weatherfield and leave his past behind he would. But he supports Nick going - because that way he and Carla have a clean start away from families and the history. Nick is worried he and Carla are too old. David says he should sell up and become a surfer dude. And David points out the if Nick refuses then Carla will feel trapped - not a good start to married life. Nick 's face may be expressionless but it seems that David supports Carla's request.

After the break we find Carla asleep on her sofa when Nick lets himself in. He tells her she is right - they have done Weatherfield and they should move on. Sell the Bistro, hand over the factory - but it could be a blast .Mountains, seaside, lakes, but no more terraced streets. Nick says they can do anything and they can do it together. They kiss and hug and Carla is obviously relieved.

Kev has a bottle of champagne to celebrate his first day of the new garage. Sophie observes that Anna has ruined all of the effort for a brilliant day.

In the Rovers Chesney is looking at the pictures of Sinead more carefully - and we get to see them as well.Chesney can see she is good. He takes one of the photos and puts it close to his heart. Nick and Carla are discussing the possibilities - perhaps a bar cum restaurant that needs doing up. Buy cheap build it up - near the coast? Nick keeps talking about visitors back and forth and Carla tips some milk down the drain so she has an excuse to go and buy some more. It will be a wrench being away from Michelle too.She will pop to Dev's. Nick recalls a weekend in Salcombe, she recalls a trip to Torquay. Looks like it is South Devon for now.

Phelan thanks Mike for cooking the meal. Michael had had to stretch a meal for two to four and it lost some flavour. Phelan insists on doing the washing up having realised he has ruined a quiet night in. Phelan refuses to report the attack to the police - it would not serve any good. And he calls Michael "Mike" again. Eileen seems to be enjoying his company just a little too much in my view. And if Kev will fix the car then it might not be at all serious.

Rana and Alya are having a great time telling Zeedan and Andy about one of Rana's boyfriends. Yasmeen wants her bill and Sharif points out to Zeedan another customer waiting for service. Obviously he has not been concentrating on the job this evening.Yasmeen hopes that they will see Rana again soon as she has got Alya smiling again.

Sally walks into the Rovers and finds where Tim is "hiding". Tim asks if she has heard of the concept of "democracy" - or giving folk a choice and letting them make up their own minds. She responds by saying she has faith - you see a person with potential and you help them out and you put your money where your mouth is. Sally notices that Liz has a new hair do. TIm agrees it knocks years off her ... not that she needs it of course. Well Liz is pleased with it. And StreetCars is sorted isn't it? Sal admits to being heavy-handed and apologises. He tells her she did the right thing.Rita comes in with Norris behind her. Rita likes Liz's new hair-do. Norris then announces he is withdrawing from Sally's campaign and he hands over a copy of his nomination - supported by Rita. So they are now both standing.Rita merely observes that she hopes the best man, woman or monster-raving lunatic will win.

Anna arrives at Kev's and is greeted by Sophie. The latter goes to look after Jack and Anna follows Kev through to the living room.Kev observes that Anna appears to be obsessed with the past. Some bloke who did the dirty on Owen and Gary. He thinks she still wants Owen. Anna says she wants Kev. She pleads with him - but he says he has been through a mess with Jenny and does not want another one. He says the children are his priority. No more destructive relationships. Anna tries to get him to think about it - but he is going with his gut feelings. She has to sort her head out - but without him. She leaves.

Tracy is ironing when Carla appears through the back door. Carla confirms that Tracy has won - she and Nick are leaving. They will sell up and ship out. Tracy congratulates them.Carla turns to go - but Tracy turns the screw as she wants more. Nick has to sell to Robert without Robert being away re that it is a done deal. Tracy wants it settled in 48 hours. Carla objects so Tracy extends the deadline to a week. Carla does leave this time She is almost beaten but to keep her man she has to find a way.

Roll credits

With the announcement of Paula Lane's departure we can expect that Callum's body will surface later in the year. Tonight has seen the addition of a new character as I have recorded - Rana.

Monday 22 February

Written by Jayne Hollinson Directed by Judith Dine

Sally's feeling fragile this morning. She's affronted that Norris would betray her and run for Council against her and is afraid nobody will vote for her. She also wonders if Tim is being ungrateful for her gift of Streetcars as well. Tim earns good husband points for assuring her he'll vote for her and will give Streetcars a go but he's not giving up his window round.

Michael comes out of the house with Eileen. They spot Tim and wonder how he'll be in the cab office. Phelan comes along, saying he's going to take his van to Kevin's to get sorted after Anna's melt down. Anna and Gary come out of the Kabin spurring Eileen on to make a loud and pointed remark about Anna being lucky Phelan didn't press charges. Gary murmurs to his mother to ignore Eileen. Sally overhears the exchange and wonders what "she's" been up to this time.

Carla has filled Michelle in on Tracy's latest demands. Michelle is furious but Carla thinks maybe it might not be such a bad thing if she leave town and starts somewhere fresh. They're thinking of Devon, near the sea.

Cathy has a disaster in the cafe. Anna finds her mopping up after streams of water have cascaded over the floor. She was so keen to make sure everything was turned off as Roy prefers that she also turned off the freezer and fridge and it all thawed out and melted. Oh dear. That means they have no milk, no food that's usable. Rita and Norris are there and he spouts off about health and safety and then realizes that could be a good issue for his platform. Anna comforts Cathy who is mortified, telling her they all make daft mistakes. That, of course, is key to Norris making insinuations about Anna's recent behaviour until he's stopped in his tracks by Gary leaning into his face and Rita dragging him out.

Phelan is at the garage with the van. He refers to Anna as Kevin's girlfriend until Luke pipes up to say that's not the case anymore. Phelan doesn't twirl his virtual moustache, playing it low key when he hears the news, but you know he's pleased at the result. Kevin offers to fix the van for free by way of an apology. Another result. Tim expresses shock that Kevin has dumped Anna and reckons Phelan must have done something to push her to this extreme. Kevin has had the wool pulled firmly over his eyes, however. He knows there's history but that's no excuse (and he's right, actually). Tim stoutly defends Anna and remarks that Phelan's only been on the street five minutes. He knows who he trusts but Kevin isn't about to take her side, though that does give him pause for thought.

Steph's 21st birthday today but it turns out Andy didn't book the night off for the two of them. She's not best pleased. Carla arrives, telling Nick that she's broken the news to Michelle. He winces and wonders if she'll tell his mother. Nope. No way. He mentions maybe Leanne will want to buy the Bistro. Robert hears the end of that and asks what's going on. Nick has to admit he's selling up but wanted to talk to Leanne first. Steph isn't too happy, worried that she'll lose her job. Tracy marches in with Robert's forgotten phone and listens on with interest. Robert's a bit miffed at not being consulted since he owns part of it. Nick tells them all that he and Carla are moving away. He tells them all it not going to happen straight away.

Tim shows up at the cab office. Michael and Eileen are nervous that he's going to start stomping around with big boss boots but Tim assures them he's not going to interfere. He sits down with the newspaper and lets them get on with it.

Rana, dressed in a nurse's uniform under her coat, comes whinging to Alya that she was made to wash out commodes rather than doing proper nursing duties so she's pulled a sickie today. That doesn't reflect very well on the NHS staff, now, does it? Alya leaves for work but Zeedan is there and offers a nice meal at lunch for her to cheer her up. She flirts and kisses him on the cheek and heads off. Zeedan is like a happy puppy.

Carla has gone into the factory for a few hours. She's also asked for Kate to come in as well. She tells Kate, Aidan and Johnny that she's moving away after the wedding. She wonders if they can buy her out but she could also stay as a sleeping partner if necessary. They all look shocked. Aidan reckons they might be able to get a loan. Johnny and Kate look gutted at losing a family member. Carla assures her they can always come for visits.

Eileen watches Tim root around in the biscuit tin. Right, time for a staff meeting, about biscuits. He describes his favourite kind, some sort of lemony cream "sandwich" type ones. Eileen rolls her eyes, and informs him he has to sort out the rotas and some invoices that need paying. Michael will show him how to use the switch.

Cathy still feels terrible but she's off to get some emergency supplies, having ordered the rest of what they need online. She takes her reusable bags and leaves. Luke comes in and asks for a specific type of sandwich and Anna knows it's for Kevin. She explains the problem, no ham or mayo available, sorry. He also feels bad for Anna and Kevin's breakup. He leaves, Phelan arrives and asks for a coffee. He sits at a table and plans to stay there al afternoon, with his coffee and a newspaper.

Eileen catches Tim playing games with the switch microphone and Michael laughing. She throws a packet of biscuits at them.

Johnny asks Carla if she's running away because of Robert. She denies it and denies she's running away from him, too. He says he'd like her to stay. Kate comes in as she leaves and hugs her dad.

Anna is stressing, with Phelan watching her every move, giving her that smug grin.

Andy asks for forgiveness and hands her a present. She smiles but when she opens it, it's a new kettle. Andy is proud of himself for remembering that she'd complained that the old one leaked. She smiles tightly and thanks him. Over at another table, Rana is now whinging that her manager is showing her how to make beds, complaining that she's a nurse, not a maid. (As I recall, all of that is part of the job, right?) She flirts more with Zeedan as Alya comes in. Rana compliments the food and Zeedan looks to be just about to take credit for it when Robert comes up and indicates that Zeedan chopped the peppers only. She smiles and says they were the best bit. Robert pulls Zee back to the kitchen, slightly but not too irritated to find his apprentice out of the kitchen and chatting up a customer. Rana tells Alya she'll come over tonight for a visit. Tracy arrives and asks Robert if he's thought about buying out Nick. Robert doesn't know what Nick is asking and doesn't know if he can raise the money. She pushes and flatters and tells him he has to grab the opportunity. He thinks she's right and will talk to Nick.

Tim, Rita and Norris are in the pub chatting with Michelle about biscuits, Tim not remembering the name of the lemony ones he was describing earlier. Norris loves a fig roll, which has the added benefit of keeping one regular. Rita scorns him, only he could take the fun out of biscuits! But Norris remembers the name, Lemon Puffs, and Tim kisses Norris on his little bald pate in gratitude. Sally is not very happy to come in and see Tim kissing the enemy and gets a sharp retort for it and directs one at Rita for supporting Norris as well. The conversation descends into political insults until Rita drags Norris out. Michelle sees Gail looking glum in a booth and commiserates with her. But it turns out Gail was glum at a particularly high electric bill, due in part, she surmises, to the cold annex. Michelle has accidentally let the cat out of the bag that she's about to lose her baby boy to the wilds of Devon.

The last customer but one leaves the cafe. Phelan is still there. He gets up and flips the open sign around to closed and tells Anna they have to have a little chat. He tells her not to worry. She spits that she's repulsed. He suggests she could close her eyes "like last time" and he wouldn't mind. She pretends that Kevin will be there soon but he knows that's a lie. She's bolshy and mouthy but he growls and then tells her she's going to be a quiet, good little girl and listen.

Kevin has returned in the breakdown truck and is dismayed to hear there's no buttie waiting for him. Luke tells him that Anna is gutted but Kevin is angry at Luke's interference.

Phelan points out that Anna has shown herself to be unhinged but he's been patient long enough. He wants a public apology. She's defiant.

In the Bistro, Gail is waiting at the bar when Nick and Carla arrive and starts right in. Carla says it won't happen until after the wedding. Nick gets a bit irritated and says, as he's a grown man, if he wants to move away he will. Gail takes umbrage and goes off to the corner to sulk. Carla remarks that he must have missed the sticker that said "Fragile" , that is to say, he didn't handle that well. Robert comes out of the kitchen and says he'd like first refusal. Nick wants to talk to Leanne and Robert understands. Nick takes him to the end of the bar and says he'd want 100K for his shares. Robert looks flustered but says he's still interested. Tracy pokes sticks at Carla who says sunny Devon is a much better prospect than Weatherfield.

Anna gives Phelan a load of abuse, refusing to apologize. He moves in close and insists on it, tomorrow in public. He turns to leave and she starts screaming at him that she's not afraid of him. He cracks, grabs her and shoves her up against the wall, a hand under her throat, hollering that she should be afraid. He starts to threaten that he could have her if he wanted but springs back as Kevin comes through the door. Kevin takes in the scene, Anna trembling against the wall with Phelan a couple of feet away. Kevin wonders what the hell he thinks he's doing.

Phelan tries to make out there's nothing going on but even he can't smooth talk his way out of this one. Kevin shouts at him to leave Anna alone and Phelan's temper comes out as he realises Kevin is starting to believe Anna over him. He leaves the cafe and Kevin asks a shaken Anna if she's alright.

Out in the street Phelan tells Jason a very different version of events He claims he went to reason with Anna and while he was trying to calm her down Kevin came in and got the wrong end of the stick. Jason advises him to keep well away from Anna.

Back in the cafe Kevin is trying to make sense of why Phelan has it in for Anna. She says it's just because she was with Owen and she's Gary's mum. Kevin asks if there's anything else. Whether or not Anna might have said anything else we'll never know because Cathy comes bustling in with the shopping.

Ken has arrived back with Simon after his visit to Peter so Leanne pops round to see him. Ken tells her that Simon's been a bit withdrawn but otherwise it was quite a successful trip. Simon's quietly polite with Leanne. At least he seems to be talking to her although he wants to stay with Ken rather than going home with her.

Steph's fed up. It's her 21st birthday but even though the Bistro's not busy Nick won't let her have the night off. Andy doesn't help her mood when he promises to buy her fish and chips later to make up for it.

Gail is worried about Nick's decision to leave Weatherfield. She reminds him what sort of family he's marrying into, what if he needs her support when he's all the way down in the wilds of Devon? He points out that there are things called trains to get her there and besides she coped when Sarah lived in Milan. Leanne comes in at that point and overhears Gail asking Nick what will happen if he has a relapse after his accident. Leanne asks Nick what that was all about. He apologises for springing it on her then explains that he's selling the business and moving away with Carla. He tells her that he's given Robert first refusal on the Bistro but nothing definite has been agreed yet.

We return to the cafe where Kevin tells Anna that he'd gone round to try and make up with her and now he's seen what Phelan's really like he's sorry he didn't believe her before. He apologises but Anna isn't about to go running back to him. She says it's too little, too late – Kevin should have trusted her before.

Robert's on the internet, searching for a loan to buy the Bistro but he can only come up with £90,000 so he's short of £10,000 to make the hundred thousand that Nick is after. Ken comes home with Amy so Tracy decides to tap her dad for the shortfall. He doesn't have that sort of money lying around. How about her mum's life insurance money she asks. "MY money," corrects Amy. There's no way Ken will even consider it. Robert assures him it's not a problem but Tracy, as usual, is put out.

Tim's tucking into the biscuits at Streetcars and complaining to Michael about the stresses of running two businesses. Michael changes the subject to Eileen – he's worried that Phelan is pulling the wool over her eyes about what he gets up to. Tim agrees – after what Anna's told him he wouldn't trust Phelan as far as he could throw him. Now it's Tim's turn to change the subject. He says it's nice to have a break from Sally and all her political campaigning. Unfortunately, he's facing away from the door and doesn't see Sally come in. Tim swiftly tries to backtrack when Sally makes her presence known. He suggests they should go for a drink later. Sally says as long as he's paying. Then they can go for a takeaway afterwards and he can pay for that and all.

Meanwhile, in the Bistro Steph's getting more annoyed by the minute. She tells Andy she's writing a list of friends she can go clubbing with later since nobody else seems keen to celebrate her birthday. Nick passes by and asks if she's used her new kettle yet. Andy smiles secretly to himself. In the end he can't hold out any longer. He gives Steph her proper present. Her eyes light up when she opens a sparkling heart shaped necklace and then again when Nick informs her she's got the night off. Everyone's chipped in for a luxury spa break and Andy tells her she has one hour to go home and get packed. She whacks Andy for playing a trick on her before hugging him and telling him he's the best boyfriend ever.

Over at one of the tables, Carla, Johnny and Kate are drinking Champagne. Tracy comes in with Robert. She doesn't look best pleased.

Eileen comes out of her house with Jason and Phelan. Kevin shouts from across the street that they need to watch Phelan. He calls back that Kevin should back off. Or what? Kevin wants to know. "Are you going to pin me up against a wall and threaten me, like you did with Anna this afternoon?" asks Kevin. The others exchange awkward glances.

Phelan makes out he's the injured party. He asks Kevin whether he actually saw anything. While Norris strains to hear what's going on from across the street, Tim and Jason have to restrain Kevin from hitting Phelan. Phelan responds by telling Kevin if he wants to accuse him of anything he should do it through a court of law.

While they close up the cafe, Cathy asks Anna about Kevin. Anna tells her that part of her wants to get back with him more than anything but she just can't forgive him for not believing her when it mattered. Cathy tells Anna that most people are given a second chance.

Norris and Rita go into the Rovers where all talk is of what just happened with Kevin and Phelan. Norris observes that Tim was involved and wonders what the electorate would think of Sally's husband been involved in fisticuffs. Sally immediately rises to Norris's goading so Rita requests they have suspension of hostilities while they all enjoy their drinks.

Liz has a word with Tim about Streetcars. She's been speaking to Steve who wanted to know how he's been getting on. Tim assures her all is under control; he's even done the rota. Liz looks a bit skeptical when he claims it's a piece of cake, a bit like being a window cleaner. She turns her attention to Sean and asks him to take care of the bar while she nips out for a minute. In view of the argy bargy going on due to election fever, she gives Sean her full permission to bar people.

Rana and Alya are reminiscing about their time at uni when Zeedan comes in. He's been allowed home early as work is quiet and Rana comments that the Bistro's loss is their gain. He mentions Nick is selling up. Rana says they were about to cook but now Zee's back he can work his magic in the kitchen. Sorry, replies Zee, it's his night off. There is something he can do, though …

In the Rovers Sally accosts Ken who is trying to have a quiet drink. She wants to make sure he's still going to vote for her and not switch allegiances. Looking at Norris she says she can't understand why anyone would vote for a candidate who's past retirement age. She tells him he's hardly Churchill. Norris retorts that the words Angela and Merkel don't exactly spring to mind when Sally's name pops up. Sean appears and says any more from them and they're barred, under Liz's orders.

Zee presents two plates of tinned sardines on toast to Rana and Alya. It's amazing what a squeeze of lemon juice and a dash of Tabasco can do – they seem half way to being impressed. As they eat, Rana tells Alya she's got an interview at the medical centre tomorrow. Alya offers to lend her an outfit. She says it would be fantastic if she got the job as it would mean her spending more time round there. Wouldn't it, agrees Rana, looking directly at Zee.

Tracy comes into the Bistro to see Robert. She's been trying all afternoon but can't find anyone to lend the money they need. She wonders whether it's worth testing the water with a lower offer. Robert wanders over to Nick who is standing with Carla. Leanne listens in as Robert offers Nick ninety grand. Nick looks a bit surprised – the price is £100k. He says thanks but he'll wait to see what else comes along. Robert tells Nick he knows where he is if he changes his mind. He walks away and Carla sighs to herself. "He'd better change his mind" warns Tracy who is standing behind Carla.

Kevin's locking up the garage when Phelan turns up. He asks Kevin when his van's going to be ready. Kev throws the keys onto the floor by Phelan's feet and tells him to get someone else to fix it. As Phelan picks up the keys Kev says that he knows something went on between him and Anna. Phelan warns Kevin that it's not a good idea to cross him. Kevin says he's going to dig until he gets the truth. "Happy digging," says Phelan, adding that he hopes he doesn't discover more than he bargained for ….

Wednesday 24 February

Nick and Carla discuss Robert's offer over breakfast. Nick grumbles that it's 10k less than he wanted, but Carla points out that it could be worse, and they know Robert would be good at running the place. Nick's not so sure, and anyway he wants something back for the all blood, sweat and tears he's put into it. She just wants to get a move on with their plans to leave Weatherfield as soon as they're married. He kisses her, but says he's not going to jump at the first offer.

In the cafe, Anna sees Izzy rummaging in her bag and asks if she's lost something. Izzy says she's lost a small address book, adding that she just popped in to see how Anna is, after everything that happened with Kevin. She invites Anna round for tea later, telling her that Gary is coming too.

Robert is worried, but Tracy is sure that Nick is going to accept their offer. Robert wants to know how she can be so sure. Just then there's a knock at the door and Ken lets her in. She's come to see how Simon is. Tracy tells her he's already gone to school, and bids her goodbye. Leanne asks Robert if he's ready to go, they can walk in together. "Where do you think you are? Sweet Valley High?" snaps Tracy, but Robert grabs his jacket and goes off with Leanne, leaving Tracy with a face like a smacked backside.

Izzy goes into the shop and asks Erica if she can get any more 'stuff'. Erica says her mate has gone back to Spain but she'll text him and ask if he can suggest someone else. She asks if Izzy has thought about talking to her GP, and Izzy looks doubtful but says that she will.

Sally and Tim walk down the Street and see Norris putting a newspaper headline on the board outside the Kabin, reading: 'Freshco Gets the Go-Ahead'. Jason thinks it's great, he can see a contract there, but Norris is worried that it will put the small concerns out of business. Sally, trying to win Jason's vote, thinks job-creation is a good thing.

Sean is in the gym talking to Gary. He asks how Izzy is, after her accident at work the other day. Gary says she's been better, but will see how she is when he goes round for tea. Just then Sharif comes out of the gents toilets, he's found a syringe in there. Gary thinks they should get a sharps bin, but Sharif is worried that if they do it will seem that they're promoting steroid use.

Kevin is sitting in the office at the garage, deep in thought, while Sophie witters on around him. Tim arrives and asks if he's ok. He replies that he can't stop thinking about Anna. Sophie reckons he just needs to give her time and she'll come round, and Tim agrees, he says they're meant to be together.

Zeedan and his grandmother are walking down the Street when they meet Alya, and then Alya's friend Rana come's along, she's on her way to her job interview at the medical centre.

In the bistro, Steph has a serious hangover, and declares that she's never drinking again! Then she says she can't stop thinking about Jamie's trial tomorrow, she's got to go and give evidence, she's dreading it. Then she rushes outside for some fresh air.

When she's gone, Robert remarks that it would be good to buy the place, it would be great to own his own place again, being in charge, calling the shots, he loved all that. "Yes, so did I," murmurs Leanne, "shame you can't afford it then."

Izzy is back in the shop, and Erica tells her that her friend has suggested she try a place called The Blue Ghost in town, apparently she could get her hands on anything in there. It's a bit rough, and Erica is working today, but she's off tomorrow and will go with her then. Izzy says it's ok, she'll go now. Erica is worried, but Izzy says she's desperate. "I don't want you going on your own," says Erica. "My pain's bad, I'm going," says Izzy, and wheels herself out.

Sally goes into the cafe and asks Anna if she can do her a superfood salad. The best Anna can offer is a ham salad, and then Mary, Cathy and Yasmeen ask her her views on the new superstore. Eventually Sally, sensing what they want to hear, tells them she's against it.

Izzy wheels herself into the Blue Ghost cafe in town, and attracts quite a lot of attention.

Alya and Rana go into the bistro. Zeedan asks how the job interview went and Rana tells him that when she wants something she usually gets it. They go to sit down and Alya tells her to stop flirting with her little brother.

Back in town, Izzy asks a young guy in the cafe if he can get her any 'stuff'. He acts shocked and asks her if she thinks he looks like a druggie. She's mortified at first but then he says he's only winding her up and then produces a small plastic bag which he sells her for 20 pounds, winking over her head at a man sitting behind.

Anna, Faye and Gary are walking down the Street on their way to Izzy's, when they meet Sophie and Kevin coming the other way. They stop and greet each other, but it's awkward. Then Tim comes along and says he wishes the two of them, (Kevin and Anna) would just kiss and make up. Gary tells him he's not helping, and they walk on.

In the bistro, Steph is still suffering when Carla comes in and asks for a large glass of wine. Then she asks Nick if he's any more thoughts about selling to Robert, telling him it'll be quick and there'll be no hassle, and they'll have the money in the bank. He tells her if he's not had any other offers by the end of the week, he'll accept Robert's.

Izzy is back at home, opening her packet of marijuana only to discover that she's been done, and it's oregano. Just then there's a knock at the door and Gary, Anna and Faye arrive.

Cathy is in the Rovers with Mary and Jason, talking about the superstore, and saying how worried she is that local businesses will close. Just then Sally comes in and Jason tells them how she's all for it. Cathy corrects him, Sally is pro local business. "No," says Jason, "she's very 'job creation'." Sally then finds herself in a very embarrassing situation, having told everyone what they want to hear in order to get their votes. Norris is there too, and tells her that if she sits on the fence too long she'll get splinters.

Dinner is over at Izzy's and they're all finishing off the clearing up. Anna says she's got to get Faye home, she hasn't done her homework yet. Gary senses that all is not well with Izzy and asks how her pain is at the moment. She says she'll get there, and assures him she's ok, so he leaves with Anna and Faye. When they've all gone, Izzy breaks down and cries.

Carla sees Tracy in the Street and tells her that Nick will accept Robert's offer if there are no others by the end of the week. She tells Tracy she's gone her a favour by giving her the push to get out of Weatherfield. Tracy smirks. "You think I've done you a favour? No, you've become my bitch, babe, I always knew you had it in you!"

Friday 26 February

Hello,

We begin in the bistro where Nick is puzzling over what seems to be a wrong wine order and Leanne's puzzling over the rotas, which are more complicated because she's given Steph and Andy the day off together. Nick is so stressed he's quite rude to a customer on the phone and Leanne has to sort it out. It turns out she's given Steph and Andy the day off together because Steph's giving evidence in court. Nick tells her he wishes it was her taking over the bistro rather than Tracy and Robert.

Kirk, Sinead, Chesney and Beth are in the street and Kirk discovers during the conversation that all cheese comes from milk. They talk about Sinead going on location for her photo shoot. Ches doesn't seem exactly happy about it.

Tracy talks to Robert about the kind of flower display she's going to have in the bistro in a sort of cross-advertising plan to boost the florist business. Robert thinks she's getting a bit ahead of herself. Isn't this storyline just a rehash of Tracy wanting to buy the pub?

Izzy goes to the gym to hand over Jake to Gary. She seems quite stressed. Sharif also seems stressed - he's been having to see to some repairs.

We see Izzy using a public lift for disabled folk. As she opens the gate she seems in a lot of pain.

Leanne goes to see Ken to collect Simon's washing. Ken says he's happy to do it but Leanne won't hear of it. Leanne tells him she looked into buying the bistro but the bank said No. She had hoped to be able to tighten up the way it's run, to make it more profitable and more stable to provide for Simon's future. He'll be going off to college in a few years. Ken looks thoughtful.

In the factory, Beth's lost another tenner. Someone's stolen it from her purse. She's about to go off to Dev's to see if someone has just been in with a ten-pound note when she finds it - not stolen after all.

In the factory office, the Connors talk about Kate going to sit in on the meeting with the O'Driscolls. Izzy rings them and Aidan snaps at her. Carla takes over the call and tells Izzy it's fine to have the day off if she's unwell. Carla suggests they continue the discussion about Kate over at the cafe.

Robert and Tracy talk about food quality. Tracy thinks profit is more important than quality. She's not that interested in Ken's opinion because she thinks he'll just trot out a whole lot of socialist stuff. Ken asks her whether she's buying the bistro for anyone else. Yes, she is. She's buying it for everyone around here. "Imagine Liz's face!" she says. "And Amy?" asks Ken. "She's got her inheritance to look forward to," Tracy says. "Now is Tracy time!"

Mr O'Driscoll has arrived at the factory. Aidan is confident they can handle his order but O'Driscoll wants proof - facts and figures, now!

Gary and Jake are in the cafe and ask Anna whether she's seen Izzy. At another table, Carla and Michelle tell Kate it will take time for Aidan to take her seriously because he still thinks of her as his little sister. Carla tells her to hang round the office as much as possible, watch, learn and bide her time.

Gary's still worried about Izzy.

In the bistro, Zeedan tells Alya he's worried what will happen to his job when the bistro is sold. Alya's friend arrives. She's looking for a job in the area.

Ken wants a quick word with Leanne outside the bistro. He tells her he'd like to invest Simon's inheritance in the bistro. Leanne protests and asks what about Tracy. "I'll handle Tracy," Ken tells her.

Back at Ken's, Leanne tells him she'd never forgive herself if anything went wrong - "It's Simon's money." Ken is confident she can make it work, though he says she will need some money from the bank as well.

Sinead has sent a text message to Chesney asking him to wish her luck but he's still not replied. Aidan comes out and announces he's just signed a contract which guarantees them work.

Gary's still worried because he doesn't know where Izzy is. Anna points out that Izzy doesn't have to tell him anything. They're not together any more.

We see Izzy go into a dodgy-looking pub.

A noisy lunch party has arrived at the bistro. Carla goes to see Nick. Zeedan asks Robert about his job. Robert says Zeedan is his apprentice. Who else is he going to order about?"

Nick and Carla sit at a table and he tells her he's worried he's selling his share of the bistro at a knock-down price. Carla reminds him he's not leaving until after they're married. He could always make it a condition of the sale that he keeps running it until then. Or, they could buy a civilised place in Devon. Nick leaps up and says he's going to call the solicitor and get the contract signed.

Leanne's back at Ken's. Everything is sorted.

Izzy's found the bloke who sold her the fake cannabis. She demands her money back. He seems quite threatening.

Tracy's in the bistro with some flowers. Carla points out that it's not her place yet.

Alya's friend still seems to be flirting with Zeedan.

Leanne comes in and hears that Nick's on the phone to the solicitor.

Izzy's trying to persuade the bloke to give her what she paid for. She refuses to move until he does. "Are you really so stupid?" he demands.

Leanne's in the office with Nick. She tells him she wants to make an offer. Ken comes into the bistro and wants to talk to Tracy. Before, he can, Nick comes out and says there's been a change of plans. Leanne has also put in an offer and it's only fair to consider both.

The end.

Margaret Carr

Good day as they say in Australia which is probably where I shall be when you read this. I am taking an extended break as we are undertaking a mega holiday visiting Singapore, Australia, NZ and Bangkok on the return journey. Various colleagues will be standing in whilst I am away.

This is episode 8848. The writer tonight was Perrie Balthazar and the episode was directed by Judith Dine. Copyright remains the property of ITV to whom my thanks for producing it in the first place and to permitting these updates to be published.

Action commences in the Bistro where Leanne's bombshell offer for the business is undermining Tracy's carefully laid plans to secure her advancement to multi-billionaire! Robert expresses surprise that Leanne can raise the money. Tracy weighs in unbelieving - and Leanne confirms that she has only matched Robert's offer. Tracy and Leanne bicker. Carla stands there looking more and more discomforted as Tracy wades in saying that she and Rob will be running the place and Leanne should stop acting like a spoilt kid. Tracy goes for the low blow asking if some old punter has stepped up or a desperate sugar daddy.

Ken has listened to all of this and tells Tracy that is enough as Leanne and Nick go to discuss details. Ken admits he helped Leanne by using some of Simon's inheritance from Deirdre. Tracy is stung by this admission. Tracy reminds him he refused her the same money, denying her and Amy a future (with Simon's money?). Tracy cannot believe that Ken has said it and accuses him of grief talking, or perhaps dementia. Tracy turns on Carla to ask what she thinks. She does not answer.

Poor Izzy is in a terrible state trying to pick her phone up off the floor. A fight breaks out elsewhere in the room and her "supplier" goes to the disturbance allowing Izzy to get back in her chair and make a hurried exit.

In the Bistro kitchen Tracy is dishing it out to Robert. She says they have to find the money to offer more - but Robert knows his limit. And he knows where Nick's loyalties lie. And Ken favours Leanne as well. Rob tells Tracy that her constant attack mode with everyone, including Carla does not win friends. Tracy does not like the sound of this. Robert tells her to let it go as it is over.

For reasons which are beyond me Audrey is in the gym. Gail wants her to sign up so that they can share M&D (Mother & Daughter) time. Audrey would prefer some G&T time. Michael is also in the gym downing wheatgrass and wanting a "how-to" on the barbells (the place has gone crazy). Gary is trying to sell two for the price of one for bootcamps. Audrey thought that was where you send delinquent (is there any other kind) hoodies. Gail says Kylie has been barking at her all day she does not need a a drill major. Gary has been expecting Izzy and is a little surprised she is not with them. He will get some of the visitors signed up and will then give her a call. Meanwhile we see his phone vibrating on a counter.

Aidan is seeking to calm down a Mr Willis with an apology. It is not going well - apparently there will be a minor delay - no more than 2 weeks. Eva enters the office with a cup of tea. Johnny hears the end of the conversation as he comes into the office. He hopes Aidan is joking. Eva says she is going to collect Simon from football. Johnny says that it is not a good idea to tell a customer that they will not get their order on the contracted date. Gambling with customer loyalty is dangerous. He wants an explanation from Aidan.

Chesney approaches the factory carrying a bundle of flowers and meets Rana who tries to claim them! Alya emerges and knows they are for Sinead who is modeling the underwear range. Rana says he will have to be careful - Victoria Secret's girls are always in demand with film stars and the like. Chesney's mobile goes and it is Sinead - they want to take her for a drink so she will be home late. He is disappointed but accepting. He walks off forgetting the flowers and the girls call him back. Rana takes a call on her bright orange mobile. She turns round and announces that she has got the job in the medical centre. Which means she will be seeing more of her old mate and much more of her unexpectedly quite hot little brother! She proposes cocktails and filthy kebabs in the early hours. Alya agrees providing Rana pays for the kebabs.

Gary appears to have signed up Michael for the gym! Audrey has signed up for a twerkout (!) and Gail is doing the zumba. Michael says that they will be surprised at his endurance levels - well you were married to Gail observes Audrey and Michael points out that he still is. Erica comes in looking for Izzy but she is not around and Gary finally looks at his phone and sees the missed messages. He calls Izzy and rushes off.

Zeedan gets his break when Tracy comes into the kitchen at the Bistro to talk to Robert. Once again it is all about Tracy getting close to what she wants and then it all going wrong. Robert reckons he is the loser - stuck in the kitchen taking orders. He wants it all for the family and he was nearly there. Tracy decides that she will get the place and he is not to ask how. And a wide smile lights up Tracy's face as she leaves.

After the break Gary arrives at the pub where he finds a distraught Izzy who demands to be taken home. She admits she has gone to the pub for weed.

Ken is telling Leanne that he is getting a vegetable balti for tea which is Simon's favourite and Leanne says she will drop in later to see him. Nick has decided to delay his decision on the sale for a day. He acknowledges Leanne's contribution to developing the Bistro and how hard she has worked - which means making a decision is difficult. Steph and Andy return from court. The sentence was three years for the photos - there may be more for the burglary. Simon comes in - they won, just. He is pleasant in greeting Leanne.

Aidan and Johnny leave the factory - the former feels that Carla is leaving him in charge. Johnny warns him on the downside of the O'Driscoll order dominating the factory's capacity. Aidan points out that it is highly profitable compared with other contracts. Eva joins Aidan as Johnny leaves and Aidan asks after Simon who has cost Eva a tenner in football cards (do they still exist?). Aidan asks her out but Eva sees Marta, the illegal immigrant, stealing around in the shadows and comes up with a fatuous reason for not going out with him - it is her booze free day!

Ken is explaining the arrangement over the money to Simon and Nick is saying that he has had enough of being in Weatherfield. Tracy is constantly eyeing up Carla. Simon acknowledges that leaving has helped Peter and Nick makes it clear that Simon can visit him when they have settled.

Izzy and Gary are back at her flat and she is clearly in pain and feeling weak and vulnerable. Izzy says she was ripped off £20 for oregano. She makes it clear that she has only done it when Jake is not there and it is not to get off her head - it is to relieve the pain. She loses her temper to stop his moralising.

Rana and Alya emerge from the latter's home as she tells the former to be gentle with Zeedan who is going in the other direction to work. They are going into town - does he want to join them? He has to go to work.

Michael is consuming a kebab exchanges some banter with Chesney and then heads into the night as Sinead appears and wants one of Chesney's specials. Hardly the right food for a supermodel notes Ches. She reassures him that she is doing it for their future - but he still seems a worried man.

Izzy is steadily explaining how difficult it is and why she is using weed. The pain is getting worse and she is a stubborn cow. She has proven all the doubters wrong until now - and she does not want social services climbing all over them. She does not get high - but it does ease the pain for a while. She does not WANT to smoke it - she has to. She admits Erica provided the earlier supply. The tablets are driving her silly and she does not want to go on to morphine and she does not know what else to do. He tells her to stop worrying - he will help her.

Eva and Marta are back at the flat. Marta is clearly now very ill. Leanne comes in and agrees Marta can stay one night as Si is not there. Leanne goes for a bath. Eva tells Marta to relax. Marta insists no doctors and no police.

Tracy demands entry to Carla's flat. Tracy has been thinking and what is going to happen is that Carla is going to give Tracy £10k so she and Robert can increase their bid and then Carla is going to make sure that Nick accepts the higher bid. Carla says Nick will still sell to Leanne - but Tracy makes it clear that Nick must accept Robert's offer, unless she wants Nick to know what a lying piece of trash he is marrying. Tracy makes it clear - £10k and 24 hours. Carla pushes Tracy back out of the flat but it does not wipe the smile off her face and the closing shot is of Carla working how to keep all the plates spinning.

Roll credits.

And that is it from me for a few weeks.

Regards

K Richard Whitbread

Nick is torn. He wants to sell to Leanne but fears that if Robert decided to leave, she'd be up the creek, as he's the best asset. But he isn't sure he wants to sell to Robert. Either way, they have two buyers and both offer him a fresh start. Carla won't push him either way. He says he will make a decision by the end of the day.

Over at Barlow Towers, Tracy is snarky with her father, calling him a back stabbing Judas, shaming her dead mother. Ken just shrugs, not giving in to her emotional blackmail. Simon reckons Ken is in trouble and both kids agree to Ken's suggestion that he might keep out of the way for awhile. In the kitchen, Robert is advising her to drop it but admits he wants the Bistro and if he can manage to scrape a few more thousand together, they might have a chance. Tracy is confident they will win.

Gary and Izzy are in the cafe. Gary tells her about an old mate he knows that can get what she needs. She's reluctant to put him in that position but he insists. Elsewhere, Carla has been telling Michelle that Tracy wants her to give her 10 grand. It might be worth it for the fresh start but Michelle points out Carla doesn't have that kind of cash. Carla looks thoughtful.

Eva has been trying to get Marta to eat but she's not well and has no appetite. Leanne thinks she needs the hospital but Marta refuses. Leanne whispers that Eva really should let the professionals deal with it and leaves in a hurry for work. Eva calls in sick.

There's a school parents' evening. Sarah asks about the time but Bethany passes it off as not very important. Bethany and Sarah talk about how difficult pregnancy is but Yasmeen comes up and gushes over the bump. Bethany doesn't think it's a big deal but Yasmeen offers the "new life" point of view and says some lovely things about Bethany who will be a big sister. Bethany goes to the bus stop to go to school. Kylie and David come along, not at work as it's slow and Audrey's at the gym. (I guess they've just locked up the door, then). They invite Sarah into the cafe for a coffee and bun. Amy, Simon and Faye join Bethany at the bus stop. Bethany looks uncomfortable and then walks away, telling the others she's just not in the mood.

Carla is in the factory when Johnny, Aidan and Richie come into the office. We find out that Richie has transferred 30K into Underworld's account as a deposit on the first big order. Carla's pleased then looks like something has occurred to her. She decides she'll be the one to get them coffees and slips out of the office.

Liz and Michelle are in the corner shop, Michelle moaning about not having Steve there. Erica and Mary both think she's lucky to have a bloke. Liz just wishes she could be under the sun in Spain. Mary proposes a night out for the women. Dev suggests a quiet drink in the pub but Mary thinks they should go all out, why not? They're single and face many lonely nights so they should take the bull by the horns. Erica agrees that a girls' night out is just what they need. Liz agrees but Michelle thinks someone needs to run the pub.

In the gym, Yasmeen is wandering around pumping iron and stops to talk to Audrey and Gail who are on the cross trainer machines. Audrey is perky and enjoying herself but Gail looks like it's a struggle. Audrey suggests Gail needs a break but she replies, while practically in slow motion, that she's fine.

Izzy has pulled a sickie as well and asks Gary to pick up Jake later. Gary hasn't been able to get hold of his mate but promises to get her what she needs.

The Connor men and Richie shake hands and usher Richie out. In the office, Carla is logged into the bank and transfers 10K from Underworld's account to her personal one. She hears Aidan and Johnny come back and shuts down her laptop. Aidan wants to go over the figures with her but she says he's on her way out. Outside, she calls Tracy and tells her she's going to the bank for the money and sets a time to meet.

In the salon, Gail is recovering on the sofa and drinking tea that Audrey has made her. Audrey is a bit smug that she was on the intermediate setting on the machine while Gail was on the beginner one. Gail fails to believe it. She protests that she doesn't have a sedentary lifestyle (no, as a cleaner, I would say she probably gets quite a bit of exercise). It's established that Gail is going to the parents' night with Sarah but a nap is in order first. Audrey has to help her up. After Gail leaves, Audrey snickers that Yasmeen turned the level on Gail's machine up higher than Audrey's. Sarah scolds her but Audrey has enjoyed the little joke. Kylie is doing Mary's nails for tonight while David is finishing Erica's hair. Mary tells them they're all going out tonight. David asks when Audrey's going to hire someone and is told she's applied to a government scheme for a work student that they can train themselves. Mary thanks Erica for being her friend.

In the Bistro, Leanne hopes Robert will still stay with the restaurant. They talk a bit awkwardly about what might happen, hoping Nick makes a decision soon. Tracy is sat at the bar. Robert tells her he couldn't raise the extra cash. He muses that he could make a deal with Leanne and have Nick sell them half each, making him the majority partner when including his current 20 percent. Tracy is totally against that. He needs to trust her instincts, she's got a good feeling. Robert thinks they may need a miracle but then rushes into the kitchen. The miracle then walks in the door. Carla hands Tracy an envelope of cash that Tracy nearly dives into her handbag to snatch. Carla refuses to tell Tracy where she got it but Tracy wonders if she could have pushed Carla further. Carla tells her she's got what she wanted and that's it. Tracy pressures Carla into ensuring Nick accepts Robert's offer. Carla spins on her heel and leaves.

At the school, David has been sent to parents' night instead of Gail who is too sore to move. Sarah sighs. Bethany isn't there yet. Both Platts are reliving their youth in flashbacks. Sarah can't get in touch with Bethany and wants David to stay though he only had come to let her know Gail wasn't. David sends Kylie a text and waits with her.

Kylie tells Liz and Dev about his packing processes in the pub. Erica and Mary come in done up very glam. Mary wonders why Liz isn't ready but apparently it's still early. Erica suggests they have a drink while they wait for her to get changed. Mary jokes that she may or may not be a maneater.

Eva is feeling a little better. Someone comes to the door, and as it's Aidan, Eva hides in the bedroom while Eva wraps up in a blanket. He's brought grapes, magazines and chocolates. He's set to take care of her but she just wants to sleep it off. He then asks her to the O'Driscolls' as his guest on Wednesday if she's feeling better. She agrees.

Sarah and David are sitting with one of Bethany's teachers who says Bethany hasn't been in school much lately. Turns out she's lied and said her great grandmother Audrey has died and she's having a difficult time dealing with the grief. David reveals that Audrey is very much alive and fit and Sarah's fit to be tied but looking worried, too.

Aidan hears a bumping noise in the bedroom. Eva pretends she's left the radio on. She wants to go back to bed and rest and get better for their date on Wednesday and backs him out of the flat. Marta comes out with her (Sean's) coat on, intending to leave but Eva persuades her to day and have something to eat. Except when her back is turned, Eva slips out the door.

Johnny notes that Carla has been quiet and does she want to talk to him about anything. She insists she's fine. He asks her why there was a transfer of 10K to her personal account. Oops. That didn't take long to be discovered. Stay tuned for her answer.

Billy comes past just as Eva calls after Martha who is doing a runner. He catches her and notices how ill she looks. Eva tells Billy it's a long story. He plays the vicar card and reassures Martha she'll be safe with him and offers to take her back to his place.

Over at the factory Johnny and Carla are the only ones there so he takes her to task over the £10,000 she's taken from the account without consulting her fellow directors. He's worried she may have started gambling again but she assures him she isn't. He tells her if she's got problems she can always go and talk to him.

Sarah and David are at the parent/teacher meeting at the school. There's no sign of Bethany and then Sarah discovers why – it seems Bethany's been bunking off school and intercepting all of the letters and emails they've been sending to Sarah. The teacher says she's a bright pupil and wonders if anything's been going on at home that may have made her do this. David says no and Sarah gives him a bit of a look.

Tracy goes into the kitchen in the Bistro to break her good news to Robert. She hands him the envelope with the money and he's immediately suspicious – how did she get it? Tracy jokes that she mugged an old lady then claims it came from the starter loan she got from the bank for opening her shop. For the moment, at least, it seems she's managed to fool Robert.

Liz and Erica are glammed up ready for their night out with Mary when Sarah comes in with a face like thunder. She tells Liz about what happened at parents' evening. Liz is prepared to give her the night off, no doubt so she can cry off her planned evening out, but Sarah says she's happy to work. Then Mary arrives, all ready to get out there and play the field as she tells the others. Erica decides she fancies having a White Russian. Mary says she'll have one too then gets distracted by the arrival of three men, one of whom in particular catches her eye.

Billy and Eva have taken Martha back to his house. She still looks ill and frightened but refuses to see a doctor. Eve tells Billy how she found Martha in the factory. Billy tries talking to Martha who tells him "they" brought her here, made her work and locked her up. Billy asks who did this. Martha tells him it was the O'Driscolls. Eva looks shocked.

In the Rovers, Mary's getting stuck into the White Russians with a vengeance and regaling Erica and Liz with details of her fling with Brendan. "Too much information" they chorus when Mary refers to what they were getting up to while they listened to Barry White singing 'You're my first, my last, my everything'.

We now go over to Izzy's where Gary turns up with a supply of cannabis. She's relieved to see how much he's brought her as the pain is getting worse by the minute. Jake calls out from the bedroom so Gary goes off to see to him for her.

Johnny's having a drink with Carla in the Bistro. He's concerned for her but she promises him she's OK and that she's marrying the man she loves. Johnny goes off to lock up the factory.

On the other side of the bar Leanne asks Nick if he's made a decision yet about the Bistro. He laughs and says that as soon as he's made up his mind she'll be the first to know. Tracy appears and wants to know what's going on. She calls Robert to come out of the kitchen. They have something to tell Nick – they're increasing their offer by ten grand. Leanne is in no position to match this. But to Tracy's annoyance Nick doesn't accept straight away – after all he says, turning to Leanne, it's not all about the money. Robert asks him to make a decision so Nick says he needs half an hour with his fiancee first. Tracy is confident Carla will make him see sense.

Leanne and Tracy stand side by side behind the bar in the Bistro, arms folded, as they argue about who would be best at running the place while Nick discusses the pros and cons with Carla. He'd love to sell to Leanne just to wipe the smug expression off Tracy's face. Carla says so would she but is it really worth giving up ten grand for the privilege? She advises him to take the money and run.

In the Rovers, Mary's knocking back the White Russians as though they're milk shakes. The man she spotted earlier comes over to their table, clearly with his eye on Erica, but he's soon frightened off again by Mary's flirting. She's worried she's come on too strong. Liz, who's trying to keep a straight face, gently points out he was interested in Erica. Mary says Erica has bigger fish to fry. Erica wants to know what she's talking about. "Dishy Dev" declares Mary, noting that this makes Erica blush. Erica insists they're just good friends but Mary tells her to pull the other one, she's seen how Erica looks at him when he's stacking shelves. The conversation moves back to Brendan and Liz suggests that Mary should call it a night but she insists she wants another White Russian – this time one that's male, six foot two and with steely blue eyes like Tom Courtney in Doctor Zhivago. She makes do with the other sort and drains another glass.

Round at Billy's Martha's telling them how she was kept as a slave by the O'Driscolls before she hid in the van which is how she ended up at the factory. Eva wants to go to the police but Martha says no because they've threatened her family. She just wants to go home. Eva says she could pay for her flight but the O'Driscolls have taken Martha's passport and it's at their house. As luck would have it, Eva has been invited round to the O'Driscolls for dinner …

Back at the Bistro, Nick has made his decision – he's going to sell to Robert. Tracy flings her arms around Robert. "What a team," she crows while Leanne glowers in their direction.

Izzy has perked up considerably after her 'dose' of cannabis. She tells Gary if she only had herself to think about she'd put up with the pain. He says he understands and that he's going to help.

Dev meets Erica and Liz in the street as they help a very drunk Mary home. Dev takes over from Liz. As he and Erica help Mary inside she insists that the two of them fancy the pants off each other and that Erica turned down a man's advances earlier because she only has eyes for Dev.

In the Rovers Sarah is telling Gail about Bethany. She's convinced it's because she's a rubbish mother but Gail tries to reassure her that all teenage girls spring surprises on their parents. At that moment Bethany turns up. She doesn't look happy. When Sarah asks where on earth she's been, Bethany doesn't answer.

At Dev's, Mary is snoring away on the sofa while Erica tells Dev about all the stuff Mary was coming out with about the two of them. "Way off beam?" asks Dev, obviously thinking it wasn't in the least off beam and he looking like he might be about to kiss her. But the romantic moment is lost when Mary suddenly wakes up and announces she's about to be sick.

Back in the Bistro Tracy is already acting like she owns the place as she swans around with a glass of wine in her hand. Johnny comes in and asks Carla if she wants another drink. She tells him she's dead beat and wants to get home but then she stops, gives him a big hug and says thank you. Tracy announces that they should put up a sign saying 'Under New Management'. Nick points out they haven't even exchanged contracts yet.

Out in the Bistro kitchen Robert asks Leanne if she has any hard feelings. She says bitterly of course she has as she lost. Robert tells her that there will always be a job for her as long as he's there and anyway, he needs her. He gives her a hug just as Tracy peers through the door. Tracy raises her eyes to heaven and shakes her head.

Sarah is trying to give Bethany a lecture about her behaviour. Whatever's going on, she tells her daughter she won't put up with it. Gail asks what's wrong but doesn't get any kind of response.

As they walk home together, Carla asks Nick if he's OK. He tells her he's fine but as he glances wistfully back at the Bistro he tells her that he's really going to miss the place.

Leanne comes out of the Bistro and sighs heavily as she stands by the door. A moment later she's joined by Tracy who tells her she needs to start looking for another job. Leanne tells her that's not what Robert said. But as far as Tracy's concerned, she calls the shots. She tells Leanne her days there are numbered and that as soon as the contract's signed she'll be out on her ear.
