2016

Friday 2 September

It's Craig's birthday, and he's opened lots of presents. Beth reminisces and thinks she's done all right bringing him up. Sinead comes down too late to see the presents opened. They're all off to a workers meeting in the cafe for a team talk.

Nick and Leanne talk about baby names, such as Tiberius. Tiberius Tilsley. Tilsley? Leanne says they'll have to get married. They joke some more about names - Nicholas? Leanne refuses that one. It seems Nick's invited Gail for tea and Leanne's invited Eva. Leanne says this is all going a bit fast. Nick reassures her and says he doesn't care what the baby's called as long as it calls him Daddy.

In the cafe, the workers say they're going to stay outside the factory. Kirk needs loo - he seems to have nervous bladder and says he's not good with confrontation. They discuss who grassed them up. Sean thinks Sally. Izzy says Jenny. Beth says Eva. Jenny arrives and Sean tells her they're staying outside the factory until they know who snitched. Eva arrives asks what they're doing there. She's surprised - she didn't realise they were serious about the strike. Sean says in times of crisis they stick together. Sally's not there, which causes some comment.

In the back room of the Rovers, Liz isn't talking to Steve. She wants him to apologise for threatening to throw him out. He says he can't have her kicking off all the time. She shouts that she wants a grandchild. Steve says she's got one. "I meant two." "You'll have two," Steve points out. "I meant three!" Liz thinks Leanne probably did it on purpose. Michelle comes in. She's got an eye test this afternoon. Michelle quite fancies glasses but she says she's seen Steve squinting at change and thinks he needs them more than she does.

Aidan and Johnny argue - Aidan wants Johnny to tell who the mole was. Johnny wants Aidan to call the agency. "My girlfriend's out there - how do you think that feels?" Aidan asks him, though of course Johnny knows exactly how that feels.

Outside, Kirk has his legs crossed. Aidan comes out. "What are you offering?" they ask. Cakes. What kind, Kirk wants to know. But he has to race home - as he goes in he scoops up the post and puts it on the stairs. There's a Special Constabulary envelope on top.

Tim meets Craig at the bus stop and reminds him he's buying his first legal pint. Craig wants to nip home check post. Tim drags him away.

Liz has been in the bistro for some change. Leanne comes in - Nick says Liz asked how Gail felt about the baby. Leanne doesn't look happy.

Kirk's back from his toilet dash and is in the garage. He asks Ty if he can help. Ty is just annoyed. Kirk says he will just stand there, though he can't resist talking. Ty can't believe they're on strike - he asks what the union would say if they said they had been watching a film when they were meant to be grafting. Beth comes in, annoyed that Kirk's not with the others, and Ty says Kirk was helping him.

In the pub, Craig says he's waiting for his Special Constabulary letter. He says it's a stepping stone. He's talking to Kev, Steve and Tim and invites them to his birthday tea. Liz comes in. She in a temper and tells Craig OUT. Steve says he's seen the ID - Craig is 18 today. "It's true," he says. "Is it?" Craig and his grown-up mates say they're going anyway - going to the Wethy Arms. "Nice one, Mother," says Steve.

Aidan has a big box of cakes. Beth says she wouldn't eat one if he paid her. he will pay. Double if they finish the order. Jenny says she's not going to work but has to get something from her locker. Aidan continues the discussion with the others, pointing out, "One of you told the truth - hardly a cause for an industrial tribunal." They seem to weaken - Izzy takes a bakewell tart. The others snaffle their favourites. They agree to go back to work, though Beth and Kirk say they have to leave early for Craig's birthday tea.

Jenny's in office ratting to Johnny. He says the others are workshy. She says she had to go along with it, but, while nobody's around... they grab each other but then Aidan opens the door with the workers behind him. "So she's the spy!" says Sean. Johnny looks at Kate. "Hello, love. Strike over?"

Leanne is in the pub, annoyed that Liz talked to Nick about the baby. Liz tells her about Steve's threat. "It's all right for Gail to play Grandma. And Janice Battersby - imagine her knitting bootees. But me, the actual grandma - why should I go along with all your lies, miss out?" She says Leanne lured Steve into bed. "No wonder Steve wants rid of you," Leanne says. Liz says she doesn't know who to feel more sorry for - Nick or Michelle. Leanne says Steve's right - "Stay out of it because you're driving everybody mad."

The workers have lots of questions for Jenny and Johnny. Izzy says it's difficult to work with someone who reports back on their activities. Sean calls her a snitch. Johnny says this is nothing to do with any of them. Aidan calls him a hypocrite. Johnny orders them back on the machines "or you're out permanently." Aidan says their jobs are safe but to get back to work.

Beth and Kirk are back home with a crowd singing Happy Birthday to Craig.

Steve asks Michelle how her eye test was. It was fine, which is a bit annoying because she'd picked out some nice frames. Liz comes in and they tell her this. Liz laughs. Steve doesn't want an eye test with someone five inches from your face in the dark. Liz asks to see Steve - the juke box is playing up.

Kirk tells Craig there are some more cards on the stairs. Fay got him a comedy policeman's hat with a blue light on top. Craig starts opening the rest of his cards. He picks up the Special Constabulary letter. Beth shouts "Don't open it!" He does. His application has been rejected due to his failure to declare a relative's criminal conviction.

Steve sees Liz behind bar. She tells him the juke box was just another lie - "Chuck it on the pile with the rest of the lies." But she tells him he and Michelle are good together. "You finally got it right." She hugs him. Is she saying she realises he can't lose that relationship?

Nick calls Leanne Carla while they're doing dishes. Leanne doesn't mind. She doesn't want to pretend he wasn't happy with Carla. He says there is a box of Carla's stuff under the bed. He doesn't know what to do with it. He talks about Carla keeping stuff from him and asks Leanne to promise she won't keep him in the dark all the time. Leanne says she doesn't want him to leave. "Why would I?" Because she didn't have a one-night stand with a stranger - she had one with Steve, she tells him.

Gasp!

The end
Margaret Carr

This is episode 8982 and it was written by Ella Greenhill, the director was Menhaj Huda. Copyright remains the property of ITV and this particular update had the help of ITV Hub as well.

We open in Nick's flat. Leanne has just told Nick that Steve is the father of her baby. She tries to explain that it just "happened" which Nick has trouble comprehending.

Poor Craig. Not able to join the police and Beth knew. She denies knowing anything - and Craig thinks she is the convicted criminal. Kirk says she isn't Beth, Sinead says it is not her. Beth did not want Craig to find out like this. Apparently Craig's dad Darryl is in prison. Both look uneasily at each other.

Bethany is being bullied again as she comes out of the loser's class. Lauren calls her ugly and not brainy. (Remember this is the confident girl who waltzed on to the Street some months ago and was getting free drinks in the Rovers and so on when she arrived). Bethany stays mute. Lauren tells her that no-one punches her and gets away with it. Lauren calls her pathetic and about to pee her pants. A teacher appears behind Bethany And Lauren assures him they are both OK. He wants a word with Bethany.

Leanne is still explaining - she and Steve had a drink and it seemed like a good idea at the time but later realised she had been stupid. She says it was a one-off and will never happen again. She was worried about Nick at the time because things were weird between them. She thought they were long over as a couple - but he had said some things about them as a couple, so she was shocked. He had said she was the one and always had been. Nick reasons that he is not good enough for her but Steve is. She says no - she does want to be with him (Nick). He responds saying that she jumped into bed with the nearest pint-pulling moron. This silences her.

Turns out the teacher is the headmaster and Gary is in his office keeping his promise to come in on the first day of term. Gary has reported the bullying by Lauren. The head is proud of his anti-bullying policy and their zero tolerance approach. Gary tells him either the head deals with Lauren and her mates or a solicitor will be making a call. The head does not like threatening behaviour. Gary points out that Bethany doesn't either but it has been going on for months, so get it sorted.

Back at Craig's Tim, Faye and Kev decide to leave gracefully, followed by Chesney and Sinead. Craig reminds Beth she had said that she did not know where Darryl was. So how long has he been in prison? He went to prison when Craig was a baby. She did not tell Craig for his own good. Craig calls his mother a liar. Kirk comes to Beth's aid by saying she must have good reason to do it. Beth vents her anger at Kirk for getting involved. She tells Craig that he is simply better off without Darryl and he needs to believe her. She will not say why he is in jail - just that he was a wrong'un. He has been in prison for as long as Beth can remember. Why did she not tell him? She was scared that Craig would hate her for taking him away from Craig - she shopped him in the first place. She admits dobbing him in to the police.

Nick is getting his head around Leanne not telling him so many times that Steve was the father. She admits to being a coward and not wanting to ruin everything. Oh dear, Simon arrives and can work out all is not well. Nick tells him they are fine but Simon knows they have been arguing. Nick blames Leanne's hormones. Si accepts this and tells Nick he has another six months of her crying and he had better be ready for it. Nick starts thinking.

Over at the factory the reveal of Jenny/Johnny is leading to some smirking between the girls whilst Aidan wants to know where Johnny has gone - apparently for a walk. Kate suggests that Aidan moves in with her if he cannot face being with Eva he could say she is struggling with the rent, but Aidan knows that Eva will not swallow that.

Beth asks Craig to talk to her, he refuses to even listen as she is a liar. She did what was best for Craig. He tells her she is gobby, she is selfish and now she is a liar as well. Until now he considered the lies - just "my mum" - but not this time. He gets up and grabbing something storms out slamming the door behind him. Kirk is still drying up in the kitchen.

Leanne returns to the flat's living room and Nick says that Simon is in the shower. Leanne sits down and says the history is past. The present is the three of them, and Nick adds plus Steve's baby. Leanne points out how close Nick is to Simon. Nick tells Leanne the problem is because she messed up lying to his face. (Lying is big this week). Leanne says they can still make it work. Leanne assures Nick that Steve is not interested in this baby. Nick therefore knows that Steve knows (as does Liz of course). In view of the earlier announcement in front of Steve Nick reckons that Steve is laughing his head off. Leanne reckons that Steve is relieved. Leanne assures Nick that he will be the baby's father. Simon comes back and asks if he has to wear a shirt to the party. Nick asks Simon to tell the others the party is postponed because Leanne is feeling ill. Nick offers Si some money to take Amy to the cinema and he reluctantly accepts. Leanne tells Nick that the important thing is that she loves him - end of discussion. And she knows he loves her and she does not give a monkey about anything else. So she asks to be forgiven. Nick does not answer before we break for some adverts.

After the break we resume with Leanne pointing out that she is not Simon's biological mother but she loves him as if he was her own. Nick wants to love the baby but remains worried that Steve will change his mind and want to look after it. Leanne does not want Steve involved, but Nick finds it hard to trust her given the lies. He accuses Leanne of being just like Carla. Leanne just wants them to be a family but Nick knows there will be a constant reminder across the Street. He does not believe it can be his family.

Kate is quizzing Aidan if Eva has been told. He is bricking it. Kate says Eva will kick off as she is really low maintenance (meant ironically, Eva is never ever going to be low maintenance). Their attention turns to Jenny with as Kate says "that strawberry blonde big eye thing going on, like a Disney princess". Kate calls her pretty, Aidan reckons she is psycho (well he may have a point). Aidan cannot see what Johnny sees in her. Sean wanders up and he knows what Jenny can see in Johnny! Aidan says he is not having Johnny taken for a ride (oh come on he knows what's what and is enjoying it). Sean tells them not to trust a gold digger and Aidan agrees. Johnny has returned and overhears. He reminds Aidan that he stole money to fund the purchase and so Aidan is the one not to be trusted. He cancels Aidan's trip to the Bournemouth trade fair and he is going to change the booking for a nice spa hotel and will be taking his girlfriend along as well.

The next line could have issued from Aidan as Bethany says "I think we have just made it worse" to Gary as they walk along the Street. Gary says people like Lauren have to learn they cannot get away with it and those little skanks will not upset her any more. He offers her chips but worried about her miniscule figure alleges that Gran has made her tea. She will see him in the gym.

They part and coming the other way are Tim and Faye worried about Craig. He is working on a muriel and they say if caught he will have no chance of joining the police - but that is dead anyway. He argues with them. Faye gives him a hug to calm him down which he accepts.

Eva appears in the door of the factory office with Aidan sunk in thought. She gives him a shoulder rub and he says Johnny has no respect for him. Eva points out that Johnny would not be the first man to have his head turned by an attractive woman (you tell him Eva). She lowers herself so her breasts rub each side of his head. Aidan gets the point. He says Johnny is trying to play the big man but Jenny is a gold digger. Eva points out that he is fit for an older bloke and that it runs in the family. He tries to tell her that he is not moving in, but she starts kissing him and as the poor lad lacks a few braincells is easily distracted by an attractive woman. She starts unbuttoning his shirt and tells him she cannot wait until they are living together. And then they can do whatever they like whenever they want as she sits on his lap. Putty in her hands!

Beth cannot get Craig to answer the phone. Kirk meanwhile is upset with Beth - he is not on her side and he did not like being sent away as if it was not his business. He wants to know why Beth has lied to both of them. Kirk says that she treats him badly because she does not consider him good enough for her. He may not be Ernest Einstein but he is not that stupid. They should be honest with each other. He leaves.

Kate is in the Rovers alone. Eva and Aidan arrive, she is still looking a little flushed. Aidan has to tell Kate that he has somehow forgotten to tell Eva that he is moving in with Kate. And perhaps he says living with Eva is the right thing to do. Kate says if he is going to be a grown up he should not be lying to his girlfriend - he should admit he does not want to live with her. Kate spots lipstick on his neck and works it all out. She tells Aidan that he cannot disappoint someone with a body like that! But if things go wrong she has a spare room.

Nick wants to know if he is the reason people lie to him. Carla lied - but she was a mess - Leanne isn't. Leanne says she has apologised enough. Nick says that this should never have happened - referring to them getting together again. Leanne says they have something better than this and can get it back again. Nick says it is all a lie. She says the real question - is does he still love her enough as he did this morning? He does not know and goes out.

Craig, Faye and Tim are sat on Maxeem's bench. Craig just thought Darryl had left Beth alone to look after him, now he finds she has been lying all this time. Tim has some sympathetic words for Beth as a single mother. And he has not had the chance to know his father and never will. Faye adds that Beth was simply trying to do her best for Craig. Craig reckons Beth was out of order and will not admit. He cannot talk to her - she just gobs off at people who disagree with her. Tim says if they go back to his at least they can have a brew. Craig can stay over and sleep on it. Camomile tea and he will be off in an instant says Tim. As they go into the house Beth appears in the background and can see him taken safely in.

Nick wanders disconsolately around the corner by the bus stop and looks across the Street to the Rovers. And stares and stares.

Roll credits.

Watching it again I am a little concerned.
Leanne has lied to Nick.
Aidan is not lying to Eva - or is he?
Beth is lying to Craig.
Bethany is not telling Sarah the truth

I suspect we are a little stuck between the ways of Stuart Blackburn and Kate Oates but if this is truly a sample of her plans I am a little unhappy. No real lightness; a lot of gray and whilst we avoid most of the shouting there was little fun in this episode (Eva excepted). And that was without the twisted storyline which is Caz.

Come on Manchester - cheer up and soon!

News which broke some time after I wrote this update. R'Toyota will be back on the Street at Christmas; not sure if she is making a flying visit or staying - but yay I say yay!

See you next week.

Monday 5 September

Written by Chris Fewtrell Directed by Suri Krishnama

Nick arrives home in the morning from wherever he spent the night and watches Steve and Amy head out on the school run, Steve being easy and comfortable, joking with his daughter, every inch the good dad. Eva sees Nick and asks how Leanne is but he has no idea and is quite rude to her, mentioning he was out late last night in the process.

Beth is cooking bacon and helping waft the smell up the stairs to lure Kirk down, to butter him up. Sinead tells her Kirk left for work already. She tells Sinead that Craig came and got his stuff, including Darryl the rat.

Over at Sally and Tim's, Craig is sitting at the kitchen table, rat in hand and talking gently to it, trying to work out what his father must be like, as opposed to Beth's general negative version. He hears someone coming and doesn't have time to put the rat back in the cage so he puts it in one of the kitchen cupboards and shuts the door on it. Sally and Tim come downstairs, Sally moaning about Craig's presence. She doesn't want him there any longer but Tim points out he has nowhere to go since he won't go home. Sally mentions the rat as well and Tim agrees that while he doesn't like rats, either, Darryl is locked up in a cage in the conservatory. Oh yeah? He insists he can't chuck his mate out. They come into the kitchen where Craig has the table set and breakfast out waiting for them. Sally is pleased but notices there are no glasses for the juice. Tim heads to get some but Craig tries to stop him. Too late, Tim opens the door and sees Darryl and starts to scream but pretends he stubbed his toe. He and Craig pick some freshly washed ones out of the dish drainer instead.

Todd and Billy are coming along the street and see Todd opening the door to Number 3, he's also been out on a late night it seems and Todd gives him a good ribbing over it. Sean pretends he had a great time and insists he's getting on with his life. Billy doesn't look too happy but agrees with Todd that it's good to see Sean moving on. Billy then assures Todd he's quite happy they're together and they kiss, seen by Tracy who teases them about getting a room. Billy goes on his way.

Gary sees Bethany at the bus stop. She's on her way to school and says there's been no trouble as of yet with Lauren and the Head will be talking to her later. Sarah wheels Harry down the ramp from the medical center and notices the two of them talking. She looks suspicious. Gary confirms that Bethany is eating and has lunch. As he walks away, Bethany calls out thank you.

Leanne leaves another message for Nick, pleading and anxious that he's ok.

Michelle is cleaning in the back yard. Steve stops her, worried she shouldn't be doing work like that. Nick comes around the corner at that point and wonders if he could borrow Steve. Michelle seems eager to get him out from underfoot, hovering and fussing over her. Nick tells Steve he needs to talk business with Steve about a delivery estimate time to Bramhall and needs Steve to take him on a dry run. He glares at Steve and says he needs to know what he's dealing with. Oooh I think we're meant to be worried. Nick certainly is a man with something on his mind.

In the salon, Audrey takes possession of the post. Maria tells Audrey about Caz staying over and it making her feel safer. Audrey seems dubious. She opens one of the envelopes and squeals, they've become a finalist in the Greater Manchester Stylist awards. The ceremony is Friday. They make excited plans.

In the cafe, Mary serves Eva and Aidan. Eva is worried about Nick and Leanne. He thinks she should stay out of it. She is determined to help. Tracy and Todd are having a coffee. He's making plans and asks for some time off. He's booking a boutique hotel room for he and Billy. She's impressed and he begs for more time off while Sean, who's come in and overheard, looks disgusted. He turns around and leaves, Todd not having seen him at all.

Leanne sees Gail on the street and asks if she's seen Nick but has to cover, pretending there isn't anything wrong. Gail is suspicious, however and Eva walks by and looks back over her shoulder. Leanne insists it's nothing serious and walks away with Gail calling behind her that she's got a right to know. (No, no you don't.) Eva catches up with Leanne who doesn't want to talk. Eva guesses she and Nick have had a bust up and guesses that maybe Nick isn't actually the baby's father. Leanne recoils and tells Eva to just back off.

Nick drives Steve to an empty area under a flyover (overpass, for Canadians). He's not answering his phone and Steve is confused. Nick gives the game away, that he knows the baby is Steve's. He's calm and collected, maybe too much. He tells Steve to get out and they can go for a walk. Steve tells Nick he regrets what happened and it meant nothing to either of them. He points out that it was a mistake and asks Nick has he never fell into bed and regretted it? Nick sidesteps the obvious answer (like when he slept with his brother's wife). Steve tries to impress upon Nick that he loves his wife and Nick loves Leanne and it's best for all this way. He was pleased Nick took the responsibility, albeit unexpectedly, and thinks that was best for all involved. Nick decides Steve was just happy for Nick to clean up his mess. Steve is sounding desperate. He'll do anything to hold onto Michelle and prevent this news from coming out.

Back in the pub, Michelle sees a glum looking Beth and commiserates. She tells Beth that Ryan moved in with Sally for awhile when he was upset with his mother. She recalls Sally held a "summit" so they could all talk and Ryan did come home eventually. So will Craig. Over at the bar, Billy is talking to Eva about Sean trying to find happiness in a bar on Canal Street (you mean, like the one where he met you?) Todd comes in and greets Billy with a kiss and tells him he's got a surprise for him. Eva wants to know what it is but Todd isn't letting anything out.

Caz has been in the cafe for awhile with her laptop. Mary asks if she wants anything else and Caz is rude to her, totally unnecessary. Maria comes in and sees her. Caz admits she's job hunting and has sent out some CVs. She can't understand why her four years of military experience isn't an asset. Maria makes a somewhat dubious joke about there not being a lot of call for trained killers. Caz takes offense, packs up and leaves. Gary comes through the open door and sees Bethany there. She tells Gary that there's a meeting at the school tomorrow between Lauren, her mother and Bethany. Gary insists she tell her mother but Bethany is equally determined not to. She asks Gary to come but he won't. She worries that Lauren will twist it and make herself sound like a victim. Gary tells her she needs the support of her mother.

Nick determines that Steve's marriage is the most important thing and is skeptical that this marriage is more important than any of his other 4 or 5. Steve only wants to make Michelle happy but Nick doesn't believe him, he'll mess up again sooner or later. Nick is unbelieving that Steve will make his marriage go the distance and will still want to have contact with the baby after that. Steve admits Michelle is also pregnant and refuses to let her down.

Kirk is giving Beth the silent treatment at the factory. She takes her phone out to send a text but Aidan scolds her and wants her to put it away. She moans and complains about troubles at home. Sally remarks that Beth's troubles are kipping on her sofa. Beth tears a strip off Sally, warning her not to put her mucky paws all over her son. Sally is highly offended and Sinead can't seem to make Beth see sense.

Sean comes into the pub from the men's room and overhears Eva talking about Billy and Todd to Michelle and Tim and he turns around and goes out the back way. Tim is the only one that notices and calls the others on it. Michelle and Eva feels guilty, Eva turning around to go fetch Sean. Leanne comes in still looking for Nick. Michelle tells her Nick took Steve off for some business. She gets more anxious when Michelle tells her they've been gone awhile and have probably stopped off at a beer garden. Before Leanne can make her exit, Michelle invites her to the back for a break, pregnancy buddies and all that. Leanne clearly doesn't really want to go but she does to avoid any suspicions, I suppose.

Out in the back yard, Sean is calling the hotel where Todd booked the room and is canceling it. Eva overhears him and gives him her very best disappointed look.

Steve tells Nick that Michelle's baby is a fresh start for them. Nick is sarcastic. He tells Steve that Leanne was honest and told him. Steve admits he's lied a lot in his life and all he wants is to be a good father to his kid. Which one, Nick slings back. He tells Steve that he's answered the most important questions. Steve insists he's never going to have anything to do with Leanne's baby. Nick doesn't believe he'll be able to do that while watching the child grow up on the same street and he's telling Nick only what he wants to hear. Nick instructs Steve, they will have to come to an arrangement IF he's going to bring up Leanne's baby as his. Steve's open to anything. Nick demands that Steve and Michelle sell up and move even before he decides if he'll take Leanne and the baby on. Steve is justifiably gobsmacked. Steve reminds Nick that it's his life, his business, his family. Nick orders him to choose. Those things or his wife? Nick pulls his phone out and tells Steve he's texting Michelle the truth. oh, Blackmail, is it? Steve is horrified as Nick composes the text. He waits to find out if Steve agrees to leave or not. Steve tries to talk him round. Yes or no? Steve can't say so Steve presses Send. Did he send the message to Michelle? If he did, was it the truth? Wait until next episode and you'll find out.

Under the bridge by the canal in the dodgy part of town where everyone goes to have their showdowns, Steve squares up to Nick and accuses him of destroying his marriage. Nick calmly points out that Steve did that by sleeping with Leanne, cheating on his wife and fathering a child with the wrong woman.

Meanwhile back at home Michelle is plying Leanne with tea. While Michelle rummages in the cupboard for a packet of fig rolls a text comes in on her phone. Leanne sees it's from Nick so she quickly hides Michelle's phone in her handbag.

In the backyard of the Rovers Eva is counseling Sean. However upset he may be over Billy she tells Sean it was a mean trick to cancel his hotel room and he must make amends and rebook it.

Over in the factory Beth and Sally are going at it hammer and tongs over Craig. Beth accuses Sally of cradle-snatching her son whilst Sally is only too keen to see the back of him. A distraught Beth wails that she always tried to do her best by Craig and made sure he never wanted for anything. Suddenly Kirk appears from the back and declares it's true – Beth is a great mother and it's what he loves about her and he loves Craig, too. He just doesn't understand why Beth won't let him be a part of her family.

As they tuck into the fig rolls, Michelle's phone rings. She's surprised to discover it's in Leanne's handbag. Leanne makes out she picked it up by mistake and puts it down to her hormones. Michelle sees she's had a missed call from Steve then spots she's also had a text from Nick. Leanne freezes as Michelle reads it. She breathes again when Michelle says that Nick has hi-jacked Steve and taken him out for a business lunch …

Back under the bridge, Steve is doing his nut. He believes Nick has destroyed everything by telling Michelle about the baby. Nick lets him rant on some more before admitting the text only said he was taking Steve out for lunch. Steve wants to know why he did it. Nick says to make him suffer and realise he could blow his world apart any time. Steve tells Nick he's off his head. Nick replies that he's a lying, devious, selfish cheat. Nick lays out the ground rules starting with the fact he wants to have his name on the birth certificate. Steve will agree to anything as long as he can stay with Michelle.

Sarah marches into the gym to confront Gary. He insists he's just been working on Bethany's training programme but Sarah thinks he's paying far too much attention to her sixteen-year-old daughter.

Round at the Metcalfes' Tim is talking to Craig about forgiving Beth. Tim tells him we all make mistakes and cites the way he abandoned Faye and her mother as a prime example. Craig looks as though Tim's set him thinking.

Maria and Caz are making up over a box of cakes and a bottle of wine. Maria offers to help Caz with her job search by working on her CV.

Todd and Billy are enjoying a meal in a hotel restaurant when the receptionist comes over to check Todd's booking as there seems to have been some confusion with all the messages. Todd confirms they do indeed want a double room for the night. His surprise has been revealed but Billy looks delighted and suggests they should skip the dessert.

Back in Weatherfield, Eva is talking to Sean. He can't stop thinking about Todd and Billy in their bijou boutique hotel. Eva gives him a look and Sean says he's moving on even though he clearly isn't.

We move to the bedroom in the bijou boutique hotel where things are on the point of getting way too hot and steamy for family viewing. As they roll around on the bed, Todd makes a joke. He says given the way things were going he wouldn't have been surprised if Billy had run a mile and hidden under the bishop's petticoats. Unfortunately for Todd, Billy doesn't get the joke and the moment is well and truly ruined.

Todd doesn't understand. Why was Billy happy to have sex with Sean but not with him? He tells Billy that it's not a proper relationship and that he has needs. Todd gather sup his things and tells Billy as a parting shot that he has to pay for the room.

Beth and Kirk are having a tea break at work. She tells him how she tried to protect Craig from knowing about his dad being a criminal. Kirk wishes she'd confided in him. Beth wishes she had, too. Kirk says he forgives her and he loves her. Now all Beth wants is to have Craig home and to be his mum again.

Steve arrives home and Leanne makes her escape. Steve is acting very strangely but Michelle has no idea why.

Tim and Craig are still having their heart to heart when Sally arrives back from work. She tells Craig that Beth's really missing him. Craig says he'd like to try and sort things out with his mum and he asks Sally if she can help. Sally's only too delighted. She doesn't know what Tim's been saying to Craig but tells him well done, whatever it was.

Having confronted Gary at the gym, Sarah now has a go at Bethany. She knows something's going on between them. Bethany comes clean about Lauren and the bullying. She tells Sarah about tomorrow's meeting at school. Sarah says she's going and Bethany shouldn't even try to stop her. She gives her daughter a big hug.

Leanne arrives home to find Nick packing a suitcase. Acting as if nothing's happened he announces it's all sorted and he's booked them a holiday. Leanne grabs the bottle of sunscreen from his hand, hurls it down and cries that they're not going anywhere until Nick tells her what's going on in that head of his.

Maria and Caz have finished the bottle of wine and they're more than a bit tipsy. Caz can't believe how helpful Maria is being with her job-hunting while Maria tells Caz she doesn't know what she would have done without her support after Kylie and then the break-in.

Billy arrives on Eva's doorstep in a right state. He's upset to discover that she already knows about his visit to the boutique hotel with Todd but he's even more upset by the fact that he's just messed up the best thing ever.

Nick is finally talking to Leanne and says that Steve will do anything he can to keep the secret about the baby. She tells him that when she saw him packing she thought he was leaving her but Nick has decided that maybe they can make this work after all. "Are you sure?" asks Leanne. Nick says no but maybe if they talk, are honest with each other and get the sun on their backs then maybe when they come back they'll be ready for the biggest challenge of their lives. A relieved Leanne starts to kiss Nick. He reminds her they haven't finished packing but then laughs and says maybe they can do it in the morning ….

Wednesday 7 September

Beth comes back from an early trip to Freshco, she's bought lots of goodies for the mediation session later, with Craig, at Sally's. She's even bought pineapple, Craig's favourite.

Eileen and Phelan are in their dressing gowns, thinking they've got the house to themselves, when Todd comes downstairs. They're surprised to see him, Eileen says she thought he was on a romantic getaway. Pat goes off to have a shower, and Todd tells Eileen that he messed it up with Billy.

As Beth and Kirk step out of their front door they see Sally in the street, and she asks if they're all set for the mediation tonight. She's been tweeting about it, she wants her constituents to know that she brings families together.

As they walk off, Craig and Faye come out of Anna's and go over to Beth's house, Craig needs his books. He's worried about the mediation session. "What if we start arguing again?" he says. Faye tells him that's why Sally is going to be there, to make sure it all goes smoothly.

A grumpy Dev is outside the kebab shop when Gemma rushes up, late. He tells her off, saying she's lucky to have the job. She shouts back that all she does is sell kebabs, and today all she's got to look forward to is cleaning the grease tray. He tells her to calm down, she's a valued member of the Alahan team. She thinks she should just pack it all in and go back on the dole.

Inside Beth and Kirk's house, Faye and Craig have found the pineapple. Faye reckons Beth wants to spoil him, she wants him to come home. Craig has to admit he misses her.

Gail is in the cafe, telling Anna she's cleaning the whole house, she wants it nice for when Michael comes home. Just then Sarah comes in, she's not looking forward to the meeting at the school later. She sees Gary and goes over and apologises, she says she was out of order, and she thanks him for all he's done to support Bethany. She asks if he'll come to the meeting at the school with them.

Tracy sees Todd and wonders what went wrong. He tells her he made a stupid joke and Billy took it personally. Just then Eva comes along and says she's seen Billy and he's really upset. She says they must talk to each other.

Phelan arrives at the office as Vinny finishes a phone call. He says he was on the phone to the architect who is asking to be put in charge of the building work. He thinks he'll start hassling Pat next. "What do you think I'm going to do?" asks Pat, "tell him I'm going to do a runner with the reservation fees?" Vinny then shows him some bathroom brochures he picked up earlier, just for show, so it looks legit. Just then Eileen arrives and spots the catalogues and picks them up. She sits down with them, saying they need a woman's point of view.

Todd arrives at the vicarage, and tells Billy he's sorry. He wishes he could turn the clock back. Billy tells him that sleeping with someone is a massive deal for him, and it would be even if he had a different job. Then they kiss and make up.

Sarah, Bethany and Gary arrive at school for the meeting. Sarah asks if he's sure he doesn't mind coming. Gary says he wants to see the little thug get nailed, and looks across at Lauren who is waiting with her mum.

Gail is changing the linen on David's bed. Under the mattress she finds his jacket, the one stained with Kylie's blood.

At the school, they're all sitting round a table. The head teacher tells Bethany that she's made some very serious allegations about Lauren, and Bethany replies that it's been happening for ages, it's been making her life hell. Gary says that he's seen it with his own eyes at the gym. Lauren bares her arm to reveal a huge bruise. "You mean when she did this?" she says. Bethany is stunned. "You started it," she says, "that is the first time I ever fought back, I've had loads of bruises from you, you've been vile to me, attacked me over and over again!" Lauren says Bethany is twisting things, she has been the one doing the bullying. In the end, Sarah and Lauren's mum start shouting at each other across the table. The teacher calls a halt and says that both girls are suspended until further notice.

Eileen is leaving the yard, telling Pat that she's ringed the bathrooms she liked in the brochures. She's enjoyed being useful, she'd like to get more 'hands on'. When she's gone, Vinny tells Pat that the last thing they need is her sniffing around every day. Pat tells him not to worry, he can handle Eileen. "You better had," says Vinny, "or I will!"

Gail goes into the salon and tells Audrey how she found the blood stained jacket under David's mattress. He must have fished it out of the rubbish – and she thought he was coping so well.

Phelan is buying a kebab from a very happy, chirpy Gemma. As he leaves, he runs into Dev and asks what's put the smile on her face. Dev tells her that he made her assistant manager – it's the power of the badge. "If you want to motivate your workforce, give them a meaningless promotion and a badge," he says. "So she's not actually assistant manager?" asks Pat. Dev says that she is, but there's only her and Chesney working there. Pat looks thoughtful.

The mediation session is just getting started at Sally's. She tells them that more important than talking, is listening. Craig tells Beth he knows about the pineapple. Sally asks how the pineapple made him feel and he says that it made him realise that he's always taken everything she's done for him for granted, but knows that she's done her best for him.

Sarah is back home, thanking Gary for what he did today, and she adds how embarrassed she is at losing her temper. He tells her he never knew she was so feisty, he likes it. He then tells her to keep an eye on Bethany, she might be working out a bit too much. Sarah gets annoyed then. "Do you think I just walk about in a daze?" she asks, and goes inside and shuts the door.

Pat and Eileen are at home. He asks her if she'd like to be their 'concepts executive'. They want a few flats to be unique, and she can't do a job like that looking through catalogues, she's have to go to visit design shows. She's really flattered and pleased, and he goes off to have a shower.

Just then Todd comes in, all pleased, and tells Eileen it's all ok with Billy now. Then Eileen tells him about being 'concepts executive'. "What kind of stupid job title is that?" asks Todd, and Eileen gets cross and asks why he can't just be happy for her. Todd tells her that Pat is fobbing her off, but Eileen won't hear a word against him. She shouts at him and tells him that maybe he should go and live elsewhere.

Back at Sally's, everyone is all smiles, it seems the meeting has gone well. She asks Craig what he got out of it, and he tells her he now understands why Beth did what she did and hopes that in future they can be more open and not keep secrets. Sally turns to Beth and asks what she learnt. Beth just smiles and looks vacant. "Loads of stuff," she says. "Like what? What's going to change?" asks Sally. Beth looks blank. "What did I just say?" asks Craig, "repeat it back to me." But Beth can't and Craig gets angry. "See! You weren't listening, you never listen, you only hear what you want to hear, you're selfish and that will never change!" With that he storms out of the room.

Todd arrives at the vicarage with a holdall, saying he needs a bed for the night. He can't stay at home any longer while Pat is bleeding his mother dry. "You want to stay here?" asks Billy, looking shocked. Todd realises then that he's misread the signals, but Billy tells him he can stay for a couple of nights. "Don't worry," says Todd, "I'll keep a low profile, I'll be as quiet as a church mouse, no one will know I'm here." As he takes his bag through, Billy looks worried.

Anne Logan.

Friday 9 September

David making sandwiches for school lunches. Bethany slams in. Sarah has canceled her gym membership. Sarah wants them to do something together. David says Bethany can work with him - unpaid but keep the tips.

Rita and Maria are laughing over something when Caz comes in happy with an agency interview. Says Maria's her fairy godmother. Luke comes in for his paper, he glares at Maria and Caz and doesn't say anything to them.

Billy and Todd are in the cafe. Billy can't stop and orders something to go. Todd checks it's still OK for him to stay a few nights. Says he's taken a key if that's all right. Billy looks as if it's not all right. Todd has the paper open at ads for flats. Billy asks him to not answer the door or the phone when he's there on his own.

Eileen and Phelan come in (you'll notice I have no plans to give him the courtesy of using his first name), talking about Eileen's role as concepts executive. Eileen asks Todd how he is and he says he's moved in with Billy. He doesn't notice Sean come out of the toilet and glare at him. Billy, clearly upset not just by Sean hearing but by Todd telling everyone, leaps up, pays and leaves, with Todd following him. Sean tells Eileen that if Billy's gone public it means they're officially loved up. He says that meanwhile, he's living with a man who pegs out his teabags to dry.

Norris has just had a haircut at the salon. They talk about Sean living with him. Norris says that with Sean it's a spray of this and a squirt of that - he uses so much fragrance it's like living in a tart's boudoir.

Maria pops into the salon and sees Bethany there. She tells Audrey she's booked a cab for later on to go to the awards evening. But Audrey's crying off. She says she can't leave Gail in the lurch. David's astounded she's not going when she's in the final.

Craig tells Fay his Mum has lied to him all his life and even lied to him yesterday. Craig wants to know whether his Dad is a serial shoplifter or sells crack to school kids. He wants to know why Beth was ever with his Dad if he's a bad guy. Fay says Craig should write to his Dad, even if he never sends it. She goes back to school.

In the salon, David and Kate talk about Maria. Kate and Michelle have booked appointments and they leave. David and Bethany have a chat. He says the head probably just wanted to get them out the door and hopes it all just goes away. David points out the world isn't fair. She says Kylie was so brave and she's just a wuss and shouldn't be the one who's alive. Bethany says she misses Kylie. David storms out, saying he's going to change his T-shirt.

Gary sees Sarah in the street. He gives her Bethany's membership refund. Izzy watches from round the corner. Gary asks if it was something he said that made Sarah cancel the membership but she denies it, saying Bethany was just doing too much.

Luke and Andy chat and plan to go out together later. Andy leaves and Maria comes over to the garage to ask Luke if it's really come to this - to them blanking each other in the street. "Can't we at least be friends?" Luke says he's got enough friends. Maria mentions a champagne reception.

David's at home. He's annoyed with Bethany and tells Gail she keeps banging on about Kylie. Gail tells him she found the jacket. She can't understand why he would keep something with her blood on. David tells her to put it back. "How are you ever going to move on, David?" "I said put it back," he says in quite a menacing tone.

Gary goes into the salon. Lauren comes in. She wants to know who left Bethany there in charge of the till. And what's in it. Lauren has new trainers. She got them because she was upset at being bullied. Bethany reaches for the phone but Lauren twists her arm and stops her.

Gail tried to tell David how she felt when Brian died. David thinks that's quite different. Brian was out boozing and chatting up birds. Kylie was the love of his life. Gail says that's worse. David just wants her to shut up and leave him alone.

Fay finds Craig hunched over the dining table writing. Fay asks to have a look. She says it's brilliant but Craig thinks it's stupid and screws up the paper. then he pours cola over it.

Bethany tells Lauren she should be cleaning up the mess she's made. Lauren's busy looking at the hair products on display and asks if she can help herself. She tells Bethany she's drawn to her like a moth to a flame. "Like a fly to. . ." She doesn't finish because David comes in. He recognises Lauren. Lauren tells him this is damaging her A-levels. David says if the school won't sort it out, he will. Lauren is scathing but he reminds her of what happened to Kylie. He says stupid little rows snowball and before you know it it's a turf war. He tells Bethany to knock it on the head. She should be the bigger person and apologise. He tells Lauren to take a seat and tells Bethany to give her a full shampoo and condition. When Bethany protests he says Lauren's his guest and Bethany's his junior - that's what juniors do in the salon.

Todd, Luke and Andy are in the Bistro. Luke asks them what size shoes they take? He wants to borrow a formal outfit to go to the reception with Maria. They can't believe he'd get back with Maria. Andy tells him where the black shoes are. Steph can't believe Luke would go.

Izzy's in the cafe taking a call about a bill she's not paid. Anna tells her she can take a tenner from the tip jar if she's short but Izzy says a tenner wouldn't even touch the sides. She says the bills kept coming in while she was in prison. Gary's helping but he won't be around forever. He'll want to move on. She tells Anna she saw Gary talking to Sarah and realised that one day Gary will get together with someone else.

Billy's doing a cryptic crossword in the pub. Maria's all dressed up and ready for the awards reception. Gary helps Billy with one of the clues (yes, really) and Sean tells Billy he thought he'd be at home, nest building. "It's not. . ." Sean says he always had to sneak in through the back door. Todd must have the bishop's blessing. Billy's a bit put out and says he didn't realise he was the talk of the washhouse. Michelle, Maria and Rita just look awkward. Norris arrives with half a bottle of milk. It's marked with an N but Sean's taken some of it.

Steph comes in for a word with Maria - "Mess Luke around and you'll have me to deal with." She tells Maria she's a user and Luke doesn't deserve her.

Phelan's locking the yard when Eileen comes along. She's carrying a big flowery folder and has more ideas about the flats.

Kate meets Caz outside the cafe. Caz says not to worry, she's not stopping. Kate points out that she is and asks how long Caz plans on staying around. Caz says it depends when she gets a job and how long Maria needs her. Kate thinks it's a coincidence. Caz grabs her by arm and Kate knocks Caz's drink all over her.

David combs Lauren's hair. She tells David people are just jealous because she gets good marks. David asks Bethany to nip over to Roy's to get some coffees. Lauren puts in her order for a skinny cappucino with no chocolate. Bethany thinks he's lost his mind but as she leaves he puts the lock on and sneaks some scissors into his pocket as he makes conversation with Lauren. He tells her they try to give clients what they want then stops himself. "No, what we do it, give them everything they deserve."

Margaret Carr

Good lord you finish one update and there is another knocking at the door. This update will be interrupted by the need to cut the lawn whilst the sun is shining. Apparently this is the hottest September since 1911 but in the north it is raining I believe.

This is episode 8987, the writer is Debbie Oates and the director is . Copyright remains the property of ITV to whom many thanks.

We open in the salon, Lauren in the chair, David wielding scissors until she asks why they are needed for a wash and blo-dry. David asks if she into English, science or hairdressing? She denies that hairdressing is a subject. He asks for the chemical structure of hair. She makes to leave but David repeats the question. She says it is made of ... like hair. David says she should have spent more time at school learning and not bullying Bethany. Lauren continues to accuse Bethany of being the bully. Being nasty and jealous of Lauren's mates and Lauren knows she is bright enough to go to University, whilst Bethany will struggle to get any job. David grabs her neck and tells her hair is made mainly of keratin and repeats his question. Keratin is a protein. She tells him to get off. he asks her what it is made of. She replies "protein". He then tells her to say "I'll never bully Bethany ever again". She refuses and says it is no wonder that Sarah has been locked up in a nuthouse and her aunt has been murdered. David pulls the scissors out of his back pocket and cuts of a chunk of her hair, letting her go. He tells her that if she comes near Bethany or the family again that it will be her throat next time. As she tries to run out he asks if she wants another appointment in six weeks' time? She finally unlocks the door and makes her escape.

The first line of the next scene is "No nowt disastrous, just a domestic situation" by Caz down the phone as she irons her blouse as she rushes around to be ready for her interview.

Gail and Audrey wander into Roy's Rolls with Audrey saying that David keeping the blood stained top may well be his way of coping with the loss of Kylie. Gail reasons that it means he is obsessing about her death. Audrey says that otherwise David is coping with the loss. That worries Gail. Bethany passes carrying posh coffee for David. She insists on going before the coffee gets cold. Outside she fins Lauren looking in a car wing mirror at her shorn hair. She shouts at Bethany that she will be calling the police and Gemma passing observes that it is a really radical haircut.

Faye asks Tim how she would see him if he was in prison. A visiting order would be needed. He guesses this relates to Darryl and tells her not to get involved. She tells Tim about Craig's list of questions thrown in the bin. She turns away and sees Kirk passing. He asks her the capital of Paris. He then says he means France! He has been listening to quizzes as he drove back from Oldham. She asks him if he knows which prison Darryl is in. None of their business replies Kirk and he adds "What happens in Highfield stays in Highfield." And is Highfield a prison and he nods. She smiles.

Caz emerges from the flat all dressed up for the job interview - but the bus drives away as she runs for the stop.

At the salon Gemma is telling Bethany that the blue lights will be arriving to take David anyway in a minute. Locked up a teenager and assaulted her? David is putting Lauren's "appointment" in the book as a "Restyle". As he says these days teenagers ask for one thing and then decide they don't want it. Bethany reckons she will cop for the fall out. David says that no-one messes with him or his family any more.

Eva is asking Billy what the problem is with Todd moving in. He says it is complicated. it is to do with perception - particularly by the Bishop. Todd comes in and joins them. He has a couple of DVDs to watch. And he has ordered a Pizza XXL which will also do for breakfast.

Focus moves to the bar where Michelle hopes that Maria is pacing herself and that she is not going to do something which Luke will regret. She responds that Steph had no right to come in shouting the odds. She denies she is messing Luke about. She assures her and Rita that Luke knows tonight is not a big deal. Michelle and Rita's faces tell a different story as she heads to the toilets.

Luke arrives dolled up to the nines in his DJ and Rita asks for a beer mat to fan herself! If she were 20 years younger!! Only 20? asks Michelle. Even Aidan notices how smart he is. Maria returns and spots how seriously Luke has taken it!

In the Street Bethany is watching for police cars as Sarah appears and tells her to come in. They are having omelette and salad.

Maria and Luke find Caz at the bus stop. Caz wants to break the bus driver's legs as it came early and she has missed her interview. And she has spilt coffee over her best top which will get stained. She blames Kate. Maria sends Luke to have another drink and they can go and sort the top, otherwise they will be too early. The other two head back into the flat and as they go the police car comes around the corner. David comes out of the salon he guesses they have come about Lauren and the officer agrees.

After the break David is explaining that he told her that she would not suit a choppy bob and she went all postal on him and said it was what she wanted. At the first cut she bottled it and ran for the hills. Gemma tells the officers that she saw it all and would be prepared to make a statement. And David would make a similar statement if interviewed formally - and she did not pay for the pricey treatment. They will need to caution David so he locks up the salon and then David is formally arrested. (Is that normal? Surely he is simply helping them with their enquiries? A caution is needed - but not an arrest).

Maria is getting the top clean and offers to iron it but Caz says she is good at that. Luke is on the phone and Maria knows they will be a bit late - but she does not want to leave Caz at the moment.

Todd shouts to tell Billy that the DVD is starting. Billy brings in beers and clearly wants to talk so stops the DVD and asks if Todd has made any progress in looking for a flat. Todd points out they are alone - no parishioners, no Bishop. So Billy should relax and enjoy being together. Billy says jumping from a few dates to moving in together - it is a bit much. Todd would have called it a few months (err no at best a couple of weeks I would say). Todd calls it stopping over before he finds somewhere. Todd is angry and is far from happy with Billy. He gets up and leaves the room.

Back on the Street Tim is cleaning his van and chatting to Kirk who remembers that he has not told Faye that the answer to the quiz is Paris! And he is also to tell her that Beth is not talking about where Darryl is as it is nobody's business. This is like a thick fog to Tim. Faye finds Izzy in the Street and asks her if all people in prison are horrible. Izzy thinks she isn't and we all make mistakes - like Gary. Izzy adds that every story is different - but be good and stay out of prison. Anna and Izzy go into the flat and Faye looks again at the letter Craig wrote.

Behind her David and Gemma return to the Street in a StreetCar. Apparently in her statement Gemma extemporised saying that she had told Lauren that a choppy bob would suit her! Anyway there is not enough to charge David - and Gemma reckons she is worth a beer. David is just going to go and clean the salon. He tells her it is not a game. Ruthless David is back.

Maria knocks on Caz's door. Caz says it is not about the job. They sit on the sofa and Caz starts spinning a story about needing to have been in the army to understand. Caz says she is useless - because she is not being told what to do and when. "Soldier do this, Soldier do that". It becomes a way of life - all of the soldiers are in together and you belong. And she is rubbish at this civvy life. She failed at getting dressed and onto the bus. Maria reckons she just needs some practice. Caz says she does not understand - but Maria does relate - when she lost Liam and she found out he had been cheating her world dropped out from under her. She has never properly trusted anyone since then (and that is without recalling Marcus). Caz is crying and Maria is close to it remembering how lost she was. Caz gets some tissues. She phones Luke and says that she does not think they should go out tonight. She tells him that it is not him - it is her. Yeah she will see him around. Caz asks if she is OK as she hands over tissues. Maria does not know how she has made it all about herself. She tells Caz that there is a lot which she can do and she should back herself. Caz says it is a lot easier if you are being ordered around. Maria gives her some money and tells her to get some wine and a takeaway and that is an order. Maria tells Caz that Luke phoned to cancel. Caz tells her to come closer and they hug each other. Caz goes out.

In the Rovers Michelle puts a pint in front of Luke and tells him it is on the house. She tells him it is Dutch courage. So he can face finding out now than tog et all his hopes up. Rita backs her up.

Over at the booth Eva has her phone in her hand and it is a message from Billy. He is reporting that it has gone badly with Todd. She tells Aidan she is texting him "Goodnight sweetheart" and Aidan says that is more than he gets. She tells he could get it every night and every morning when he moves in with her. So has he changed his mind? She points out he could have moved in this weekend. And every time she asks he is clearly keener on jumping off a cliff. Aidan says it is a big decision. But they will, they should. He does want to. She wants to know when. Initially he does not answer and she knows he does not want to. She looks defeated. He sees this and says "All right. Now. Tonight" and then accuses her of bottling it. He invites her to help pack. She laughs and they hug.

This upsets Luke even more! He is off to Town! Aidan sees his former self departing out the door.

David returns home to Audrey, Sarah and Gail. He said there had been a business problem. He lies and backs up Bethany's story alleging a rep had kept him. He has not signed up for anything. He got out scot free he says - which reassures Bethany without giving anything else away. Audrey and Sarah go for a drink. Gail has his dinner under some foil and kept hot. He takes it into his room to eat. Gail wants a chat about the jacket. He says if it stops him moving on he will get rid of it, along with anything else which gets in the way. Gail is even more worried now.

Caz returns with a Chinese and sees Maria's nude back as she returns.

David finishes his meal and gets the laptop out. he logs on as MarkBailey1 to a website called "Friendconnect". He finds Cormac Hibbs (Macca) - the father of Kylie's killer - and sends him a friend request. We are back to David peering out from under dark knitted brows as the final shot before going into the credits.

David is reverting to his teenage years pre-Kylie. This could get nasty. I very much doubt that Lauren will stop.

Aidan nearly got the boot - but is he reformed and is Maria going to bat for the other side?

Will Craig look like his father (the late lamented Butch DIngle whose death led to tears in this house)?

And will Luke pull?

These and many other answers will appear in future updates!

See you next week.

Monday 12 September

Written by Jayne Hollinson Directed by Nicki Lister

It's Sean's birthday. He's not admitting it's his 40th, insisting on the ubiquitous 39. Norris offers to make him a nice meal in celebration but Sean pretends he's having drinks with mates. Norris assumes he's invited. Sean hesitates and glances over towards Number 11 sadly.

Craig comes out of Number 4 and looks over at Number 5 but turns away quickly when Kirk and Beth come out. Beth calls out to him, like a foghorn as she does but he continues on. Kirk wonders if maybe Craig didn't hear her. (You think?) Beth decides to go to the police station to explain that Craig didn't know about his father and if they knew the circumstances, they might accept his application after all.

Craig joins Faye at the bus stop. She can tell he looks pretty down. He holds up a container and says Sally made him chick pea and red onion butties as a mood lifter. Faye seems to have been on the receiving end of some of Sally's "Rosy recipes". She thinks everything will work out in the end. She seems confident.

Caz feeds Ozzy and thanks Maria for giving up her Friday night and weekend to cheer her up. Maria and Liam both agree it was a great weekend. Caz agrees and says she never thought she'd feel like this again. Caz makes plans to head back to the job centre but she's not optimistic. Maria is. She'll find something.

Anna brings a cake out from the back of the cafe. Steph and Andy are at the counter, with Steph expressing annoyance at Maria messing Luke around. Andy asks about the cake and it turns out Eva had asked Roy to bake a 40th birthday cake for Sean. There will be no hiding the age now! Steph is really worried about Luke who's not come home all weekend. Just then, Luke rocks in, still wearing the tux with the tie undone and sporting a huge ear-to-ear grin. Someone's had a good weekend, then!

At another table, Billy and Todd are having breakfast. Billy teases Todd about sulking all weekend and while Todd looks at the flats for rent in the newspaper. Billy reiterates that he thought Todd moving in permanently was too soon, so says his "sensible head" anyway, because he really did enjoy having him around on the weekend. Todd asks why it can't be permanent and Billy explains that things have to change gradually. Todd prefers to push change rather than wait for it to happen. You lose out if you don't.

Back to Andy, Steph and Luke, now. Steph berates Luke for not letting her know he was ok. Andy is about to approve of Luke's stopout ways but they both stop short of a high five after taking in Steph's glare. She asks what the woman's name is. He guesses at Jasmine but then checks his phone to confirm it's Jessica. Nice. Steph rolls her eyes. She preferred him heartbroken. She gets off to work. Caz comes in and scolds Luke for binning Maria off but looks intrigued to find out that it was the other way around.

In the factory, Sean is trying to given people the hint that it's his birthday but they are all pointedly playing clueless. He turns to pick up his phone to the tune of the tea break alarm. Eva blows a whistle and they all jump up and call out Happy Birthday. Eva puts a silly hat on him and fizzy lemonade is served all around, accompanied by little jokes about his age.

Steph arrives at the restaurant. Robert offers her temporary manager while Leanne's away but she's not overly enthusiastic. She hated doing that job before. He asks her what her ambitions are and notes that if she does a good job of it, she can cover Leanne's maternity leave, with a pay rise of course. That makes Steph's eyes light up. He pushes her into the deep end, telling her that the booking for 10 has turned into 20.

In the salon, Audrey is annoyed that Maria didn't go to the awards do. Maria defends herself. Rita recalls Luke looking sad in the Rovers later but he did look good in that tux. Audrey reckons Maria was mad to let him go. Maria preferred to help a friend in need. Audrey admits that they never had a chance anyway. Her old friend Claudia won it and had known the judge from their student days. Caz comes in and tells Maria there was no luck at the job center but she registered for benefits but had to use Maria's address. Maria doesn't look too keen about that but pretends it's ok. Caz offers to make Maria a nice lunch. Audrey makes a comment about Caz's feet under the table.

Eva leads Sean across the road. Billy smiles to see them coming. Eva puts her foot in it by asking if Billy and Todd made up and then backs out and hurries off to the cafe to put the cake order in. Billy wishes Sean happy birthday. Sean is pleased he remembered but then of course, he's still wearing his birthday hat. Billy likely remembered anyway and does remember that Sean is 40. They discuss the age, with Sean not quite happy about it. Billy points out 40 is an accumulation of experience but leaves you still able to draw the crowds. Sean ruminates about his current situation, living with an OAP, doing the same job for years and still alone. Billy says living with Norris is only a stopgap but Sean stops him when he's about to console him about being on his own. Sean invites Billy and Todd both to his birthday drinks later.

Maria comes out and sees Aidan go by. She asks him about domestic life. He's quite happy now he's made the plunge. He asks why she didn't go to the awards and is told about Caz's missed interview. Aidan thinks he might be able to help. Upstairs, Caz has been fixing lunch. She goes to the mirror to look at her makeup job and unbuttons her blouse a bit more. She turns when she hears Maria come in. Maria excitedly tells her about an admin job at a clothing factory, and the Aidan connection. Caz is surprised that Aidan is going her a favour. Maria reckons Aidan doesn't really hate her, they all used to get along after all. He reckons the woman who's hiring is a feminist and will probably like that Caz is ex-army. Caz gives Maria a big hug and then leans in and gives her a little kiss in thanks, leaving Maria looking stunned.

After the break, we're in the factory. Sally and Beth start squabbling about Craig and their raising voices are hushed by Jenny because Aidan is at the top of the stairs with a client. Sally doesn't get the impression Craig wants to come home, which doesn't sit well with Beth. Beth is determined to get Craig out from under Sally's roof. She goes to Aidan and asks to leave early, pretending to be ill so she can go to the police station. She scuttles out, pretending to be nauseous. Aidan warns Kate that Caz will be coming in later to see the client Aidan has with her, to do with the job. Kate is astonished at Aidan's generosity. Aidan reckons if Kate gets a job she'll leave. Ah. Good thinking.

Maria's back at work and looking distracted. Audrey scolds her for inattention. Audrey also mentions that Caz made lunch for Maria. Sophie was in the chair and reckons Caz feeds off people and Maria ought to be careful. Maria might say they're assuming the worst but she's worried. Sophie says Caz isn't evil, just wants someone to smother herself around. Maria finally admits that Caz kissed her.

Caz is in the factory office with the client, Vanessa. She asks Caz why she left the army and Caz glosses over it, pretending she was up for new challenges. Vanessa seems to be ok with that and since Caz has the qualifications, she is offered the position. But she's dismayed when she finds out the job is in Newcastle.

Maria tells Sophie and Audrey it wasn't a "snogging" type of kiss so she's not really sure if there was anything behind it more than a thank you though Sophie reckons Caz is moving in on her. Audrey wonders if Maria has some sort of thing that attract gay people. Sophie doesn't take offense and jokes that Maria has "gay rays" that made Caz snog her. But just then, Caz comes in and has heard Sophie's jokes. Caz backs out in tears with Maria in pursuit.

Anna brings Faye a sandwich at a cafe table and starts up a conversation about Craig, looking to find out more about his dad in prison. Faye chides her for being nosy but admits it. She says Craig wants to see him down deep and wrote out some questions but then decided against it. She admits she recopied them and sent them to his father in prison, even using her own name citing herself as a friend. Anna is horrified.

Steph is overseeing the birthday party of OAPs in the Bistro. She points Andy to the breadbaskets that need refilling. Robert is pleased when she tells him one of the party wants to book the Bistro for a granddaughter's wedding but then he's upset when finding out that she didn't get the email about a cake they were asked to provide.

Kirk asks Craig to come home for Beth's sake. Before they can really get into it, Anna comes striding around the corner with Faye frantically trying to stop her. No good. Anna asks Craig what his father is in prison for and tells them Faye wrote to him. Kirk and Craig are flummoxed.

In the pub, Sean is surrounded by friends and neighbours. Norris has given him a present, a game of Solitaire, something to wile away the lonely hours (from one single man to another). Ouch. Sean insists he's not lonely and has received lots of "winks" now he's changed his online profile to "mature". Billy takes a call and moves away from the table. Sean and Todd talk quietly, with Todd thanking Sean for inviting him. Sean calls it a fresh start but in the background, Billy's call seems to be about a complaint and Sean looks a bit shifty.

Maria has come outside and tells Sophie that Caz has left, taking all her stuff. Maria feels terrible and is worried about her. She wants Sophie to help look for her. Sophie reluctantly does.

Beth finds out that Faye has contacted Craig's father and she and Anna start a loud squabble on the cobbles until Craig shouts at them to stop. Sinead comes over and hands him an envelope that was delivered earlier. Turns out it's a letter from his father asking him to visit!

Written by Ben Tagoe Directed by Nicki Lister.

We start off where we left off. Craig is reading the letter, Beth is insisting he can't go (she's been to the police station to beg them to give Craig another chance) and Anna is worried about Faye's involvement. Craig walks off, not wanting to deal with his mother.

Billy tells Todd that someone has complained about him staying with Billy, a spokesperson for the rest of the parishioners apparently. Everyone sighs at the effrontery of it all. Sean isn't surprised, it feels a bit like deja vu. Billy thought he should have seen it coming. He's going to see the Bishop tomorrow and decides to go home. Sean insists that he stay on. Eva looks a bit thoughtful.

The Bistro is hopping. Kevin and Luke have come in for a drink. Kevin teases Luke about his women and recalls his own days as a player. Luke looks skeptical. Kevin defends himself, He had a full head of hair, thicker moustache. He looked like Magnum P.I. in overalls! Luke has no idea who that is. Kevin feels even older now. He teases Luke about juggling all the women and warns him to be careful. He doesn't want all these angry women converging on the garage! Steph is upset about this cake business and the suggestion that they just nip to Freshcos for a store made one is not a solution she is happy with. She recalls a cake (Sean's) and hopes it's not been sliced up yet.

Craig is talking to Tim in the cab office, letter in hand. Tim tells him that Faye was only trying to help. He tells Craig they need to make a Pro/Con list. Cons first. How about the fact that he's banged up? But that doesn't make him a bad person, Tim reckons. Craig says his mother says his father always used to lie. Tim turns his attention to the Pro side and offers to go with him for moral support. Craig tears the letter in half and decides he's managed so far without him. He's got Kirk and Tim both. Tim looks surprised but a bit pleased.

Eva is dismayed about the complaint. Billy says a vicarage brings out the worst in people. Todd thought the Bishop seemed very open minded but Billy thinks that a personal belief is different than facing open mutiny in the "flock". Billy seems fed up with years of having to deal with this sort of thing. Steph has come in and asked if she can take Sean's cake but Sean is adamant that she isn't going to have it. Even Norris backs him. She pleads. She needs to prove herself and teach those blokes over there a lesson (Andy, Zeedan and Robert). The cake has a old lady cartoon on it, called Maxine. You may have seen her on greeting cards. The "40th" can be changed, Steph points out. Michelle proposes a deal-sweetener like a romantic meal for two with champagne. Sean agrees to the deal and Steph leaves, cake in arms. Sally has told Kirk and Beth that Craig is with Tim. Beth wants to go straight over but Kirk insists she stay put and let Tim handle it. Sally and Sinead both agree.

Maria and Sophie haven't been able to find Caz. Sophie wants to give up and Maria wants to check one last place (they're in front of a shelter/hostel) but they see Caz come around the corner. Maria runs after her and insists they weren't laughing at her. Maria implores her to believe she got the wrong end of the stick. Maria tries to get her to come back but is shocked when Caz accuses everyone of trying to pack her off to Newcastle. Maria didn't know that's where the job was. Caz reckons she's better off away from that street and her. Maria tries to persuade her to come back.

Eileen brings a gift in for Sean. In another booth, Cathy and Anna are chatting. Anna has the bed to herself since Kevin is out with Luke and they laugh about Kevin being a snorer. They laugh about how quickly the novelty of having a cuddle in bed wears off. Cathy looks as if she doesn't exactly have reason to share in the joke, not really. Tim arrives and says Craig has gone back to the house to have some time to himself. He tells Beth that Craig is ok and that Craig has decided not to go see his father.

But in the Metcalf's, Craig is piecing together the torn letter and applying for a visiting order online.

In the pub after the break, Kate and Aidan arrive. Sean tells them that the party isn't going quite as planned, right up to someone nicking his cake. Eileen has decided to go home as well but has to put Sean off when he thinks he might come with her for a cuppa. She and Pat wanted some quiet time. Kate teases Aidan about his missus. He tells Kate that Caz turned down the job. Eva is trying to get Billy to focus on the positive and determines that he doesn't know who it was that complained. Eva looks toward Sean, her glance followed by Billy. He doesn't think Sean would have done it. Eva sighs and is about to tell him something she was hoping she wouldn't have to.

In the Bistro, Steph is serving the cake to the party. They sing Happy Birthday but Robert criticizes Steph for her actions, calling it the most expensive birthday cake in history and warns her to check with him in future. She's annoyed. She used her initiative. He grumbles and goes into the kitchen. She admits to the others he had a point but the younger men think Robert was out of order and rude while Kevin identifies with Robert and the pressures of running a business. Craig comes in looking glum and orders a beer. Steph is a bit surprised but he insists he's got money and an ID. They can tell there's something on his mind.

Billy has confronted Sean with the accusation about the parishioner and reveals that Sean had tried to cancel the night at the hotel. Sean admits to the hotel, citing it as a mistake and put it right. He promises he has not complained to the Bishop but Billy doesn't believe it. He calls Sean sad and bitter. He and Todd leave. Anna and Cathy watch the goings on then go back to a conversation about Faye writing to a prisoner. Cathy doesn't help matters by talking about a documentary she saw about woman in America who married a serial killer in prison. Sean and Eva argue. Sean looks upset at the worst birthday party ever. Eva wants to leave but Aidan wants to stay.

Maria has convinced Caz to come back. Sophie asks Maria if she's ok, which gives Caz the hump and then she sees Kate, Aidan and Eva come out of the pub. She thinks they're next in the queue to slag her off. Maria chides Aidan for not telling her the job was in Newcastle. He pretends it slipped his mind but Maria doesn't believe him, giving him the evil eye about telling the truth. Kate is dismayed to find out Sophie was helping Maria look for Caz as a favour to Maria who follows Caz home.

Craig is getting drunk in the Bistro and compliments Steph on her beautiful eyes. Andy muscles in and Craig reverses himself, saying he meant it in a friendly way. Steph explains it's her job to know when someone has had enough to drink and gently insists he has had enough. Robert gets ready to leave and takes Craig with him. Andy complains about Robert and thinks Steph shouldn't put up with his attitude. Steph wants to make the promotion work so will put up with it.

Caz has cleaned herself up and joins Maria and Ozzie on the sofa. She apologizes to Maria for everything, including the kiss. Maria admits it was a bit of a shock and realizes it was a mistake. She tells Caz she's lovely and she should probably be flattered. Maria decides to go get them some chips. Caz tells her she's loyal despite her other faults and appreciates someone standing up for her. She won't forget it.

Craig staggers into Sally and Tim's house, falling down by Darryl's cage. He takes his pet out of the cage for a drunken cuddle and then falls over again, bringing Sally and Tim downstairs again. Tim is worried that the rat is loose in the house but Craig is suddenly overtaken by nausea and throws up over the side of the sofa. Tim! Do something! Sally insists Craig and the rat are leaving in the morning.

Aidan comes to find Maria in the kebab shop. He insists the job was in order to help Kate. Maria thinks he should leave Caz alone. Aidan insists Caz is trouble and he worries about Kate and Maria as well. Gemma goes into the back. Aidan calls her on that remark she made about the truth and repeats that their encounter was a mistake. Maria mutters that it might be to him but doesn't repeat it when he asks what she said. Crush much?

Wednesday 14 September

It's early morning and Cathy wanders into the kitchen of the flat and falls over Alex who is sleeping on the floor. He tells her he couldn't sleep on the sofa, it was too lumpy. Roy hears the noise and rushes in, brandishing a cricket bat, but then tells them he will address the sleeping arrangements.

Over at the vicarage, Billy is angry and is sure it was Sean who told the bishop about Todd staying there. Todd points out that he can't be sure it was Sean.

In the cafe, Craig is telling Tyrone of his falling out with Sally, so Tyrone says he can stay with them for a few nights while he sorts himself out. "But no drinking!" he warns him, "Fiz can make Sally look like a pussycat!" Craig thanks him. "But I can bring my rat, can't I?" he asks. Tyrone falters for a moment, and then says of course he can.

Roy has been looking at his laptop, and takes it over to show Cathy. He's found the perfect answer to Alex's sleeping arrangements, a sofa bed! Cathy doesn't look delighted.

In the factory, Sean is giving Eva the silent treatment. She goes over and tells him that she didn't tell Billy that it was him who phoned the bishop. Sean is cross and says he's now labeled as a bunny-boiler who has nothing better to do than sabotage a silly fling. She reminds him that he did cancel their trip away, and Billy is her friend as well. Sean says he has nothing more to say to her, but just then Billy himself comes in. He goes over to Sean and tells him he's unbelievable. "First you go sneaking off to the bishop....." he says. "I did no such thing!" snaps Sean. "And now you're too much of a coward to own up to it," says Billy. They continue to argue and voices get raised, until Aidan comes out of the office and tells them to stop, so Billy leaves.

In the Bistro, Andy and Steph are talking to Zeedan about their forthcoming trip to Zombie Mania. Robert comes out of the kitchen and has a quiet word with Steph, he wonders if he's put too much responsibility on her, and maybe he should get someone else in until Leanne gets back. Steph pleads for another chance, so in the end he relents. "Last chance saloon," he says, "don't let me down."

In the cafe, Roy comes down with more information about the sofa beds, and they start discussing it with Anna and Alex. Alex says he'd rather have a flat, and Anna points out that there are two bedrooms in the flat, why does Alex need a sofa bed? There then follows an awkward, embarrassed pause, as Anna realises exactly what the position is.

Billy is at the bar in the pub, where Eva is working. Sean comes in and tells her to tell Liz that he won't be in for his shift later, he's got a bad head. Eva asks if she can buy him a drink, but he declines. Then he turns to Billy and says that not only did Billy accuse him to snitching to his holiness, but he had the cheek to turn up at his place of work and stick a big, fat liar label on him. Billy tells him to forget it, what's done is done. "Oh, that's big of you," snaps Sean, "is it done for me? No!" he goes on to point out that telling the bishop that Billy and Todd were living together would not have brought him back, so he didn't do it. "I ask you, what would be the point?"

Kirk sees Craig sitting at the bus stop looking at the letter his dad sent him. He tells Kirk that he's going to go and see his dad. Kirk says that Beth will be upset about that. Craig tells him that it's not about what she wants. "Look," he says, "you know your dad, don't you? And my mum knows hers, I've never had that and it's not fair that she was the one who got to decide." "Point taken," says Kirk, and gives him some money for the fare. Just then the bus comes along and as Craig gets on it, Kirk tells him to remember that his mum has looked after him for 18 years, and she did what she did for the right reasons.

The bishop has paid a visit to Billy, he points out that the member of his flock who reported him obviously felt unable to approach him, and if that's the case then he's failing in his duty as their vicar. Billy states that Todd was only staying with him on a temporary basis, but anyway, he's entitled to a relationship. The bishop agrees. "But not under this roof," he says.

Craig has arrived at the prison to see his dad – who actually looks quite like him. "Hello son," his dad says, "I've waited a long time for this."

The bishop is taking his leave, and remarks that the church has come a long way in the last twenty years, there are now women bishops for a start. Billy replies that they teach that people should be tolerant and should not discriminate in a civilised society, yet the church seems only too ready to do so. "But the vicar, living with his boyfriend....?" says the bishop. Billy says that they're not living together, but some day they might want to. The bishop urges him to give it time.

Craig is chatting to his dad about his life, his education, his part time job as a window cleaner etc, and his dad admits that he's been inside a lot, mainly for thieving. Craig asks if he ever tried to find him, and he says that he did, but in the end it seemed kinder to leave him and his mum alone, but he's really glad that Craig has come now.

Andy arrives at the Bistro all made up for hallowe'en, only to find that Steph now can't go with him to Zombie Mania, her job is at stake. He's really upset and disappointed.

Back at the prison, Craig's dad asks what Beth thinks about him being there, and Craig confesses that he nearly didn't come. As they chat, Craig mentions Kirk, and explains that he's Beth's husband. Just then the bell rings for the end of visiting, and his dad asks Craig to come again and bring him some weed next time. "Just to get me through," he says. Craig is shocked. "Drugs? Is that what you wanted me for?" he says, "Mum was right!" As he stands up to leave, his dad then asks what Kirk would think about his wife still being married to him!

Todd and Billy are sitting in the garden, enjoying a glass of wine. Billy says he now knows it wasn't Sean who reported him, but is still wondering who it was. He says that all he wants is to have the same sort of relationship that other people take for granted. Todd then wonders if maybe Billy should think about leaving the church.

Beth and Kirk are at home when Craig walks in. Beth is horrified when she learns that Craig went to see his dad. "There's more to being a good dad than giving up your DNA," she says. "What about being a good wife eh?" asks Craig, "because I reckon you're about as rubbish at that as you are at being a mum." And then he goes on to say that his dad told him that they got married and never got divorced. Kirk is puzzled. "That can't be right, you're married to me, you're my wife," he says. Beth turns round, tears welling up in her eyes. "Kirky........" she says, looking stricken. "Don't!" snaps Kirk, and storms out.

Friday 16 September

We open with Billy standing on the vicarage steps looking towards the church. When Todd comes out and says he'll be going soon, Billy says there's no reason why he should. He's done nothing wrong.

Roy arrives back in the cafe after a fraught trip to the cash & carry where they've changed the aisles round and discombobulated him. When he's out of earshot, Anna asks Cathy if she's had a word about sharing a bed. She hasn't. Anna tells her that sometimes the Softly Softly approach doesn't work.

Andy and Steph head for work with a sulking Andy striding out in front of her. Walking at a more leisurely pace is Sally behind them, with Eileen jogging up behind her to ask how she thinks the planning committee will vote today. Sally refuses to give an opinion but wishes Eileen and Phelan all the best. "Snotty cow!" mutters Eileen but Phelan says Sally's just doing her job.

Beth and Kirk are late for work. They're still at home with Kirk asking her why she couldn't just get divorced like a normal person. Beth weeps that she didn't want to let Craig's dad back into her life. "You've no idea what you've done to me," says a devastated Kirk. "What now?" she asks. Work, says Kirk.

Audrey's in the cafe with Maria and Rita talking about her plans to go out with Freddie. They tease her about him but Audrey says they're just friends and he makes her laugh.

Billy's on his way out of the cafe and meets Sarah. He tells her the parishioners don't like his private life. Sarah thinks he's so good at helping he could have been a social worker.

Beth and Kirk have been called into the office to explain to Johnny why they're late. He says they've already been warning and why wouldn't he sack them? Beth tells him he can fire her but not Kirky. She weeps and an exasperated Johnny hands her a tissue instead of her notice.

Fiz has been watching through the office door and tells the others she had hoped Beth and Kirk had made up. Sally says all marriages have their ups and downs. She and Kevin used to have some terrible rows. "Was that before or after you got divorced?" sneers Jenny. Kirk and Beth come out and Beth just says something flippant.

At the cafe, Anna yawns and turns the conversation to sleeping arrangements. She has to spell it out to Roy that Cathy probably wants to sleep in the same bed. "It's not just my room." Anna says she knows Roy misses Hayley but Cathy wants to spend as much time with him as possible. and no, Cathy hasn't said it like that.

Phelan and Vinny sit in the pub weighing up the characteristics from each person in there and assessing how fleece-ible they are. Eileen comes back to the table and Vinny's phone rings. The council's given them a big fat Yes. Liz comes over to congratulate Eileen and as Eileen turns away, Phelan tells Vinny to get out his shears. "We've got some fleecing to do."

Kirk thumps boxes into the van and when Maria asks what's wrong, he tells her. He says he hasn't decided what to do.

Roy goes into his bedroom, looks at the wedding phone of Hayley with him, takes off his shoes and lies back on the bed, looking thoughtful, one arm reaching out to the spot where Hayley died.

Rita leaves Preston's Petals just as Billy arrives. He tells Todd he's thinking of leaving the church. He can't have people making judgements about him. Todd offers to meet him after work so they can discuss it. Billy's pleased with that. He's almost out the door when Todd says: "Billy, you know I love you, don't you?" Billy didn't but he's glad to hear it. "I love you too," he says and they share a kiss.

Andy's still not talking to Steph. But she manages to talk him round to making dinner tonight as his punishment..

Eileen's been to the loo again. She appears to have Bubbly Bladder. Todd comes into the pub and she offers some fizz, which he refuses. He orders one from Liz and watches Phelan propose a toast. Vinny reminds Phelan that he has to call the architect today. Phelan says he'll do it from home. Todd gets Liz to put his drink aside and he goes off after Phelan.

At the cafe, Cathy takes a call from Alex who is on his way home. Roy tells her that gives him a chance to talk to her. He rather awkwardly asks if she'd like to share a room. She would. Roy says he'll start to move his things into her room right away.

In Eileen's front room, Phelan phones the architect and ends their contract with him. Todd comes in from the kitchen. He asks Phelan if he just heard him sacking the architect. Phelan shouts at him for sneaking around but Todd says he thinks Phelan has to answer a few questions.

Freddie and Audrey enjoy themselves at the Bistro.

Luke comes in and chats to Andy at the bar. Andy says it's pretty obvious Luke is on the pull because of the amount of aftershave he's wearing. Luke asks for lager but Andy pulls out a bottle of red wine and two glasses and says it's on the house. Luke asks how Steph feels about him giving away wine and Andy says she owes him one.

It's the end of the day at the factory. Johnny takes Jenny aside to find out what's going on with Beth and Kirk but she knows nothing. She soon will, though, because here come the police looking for Beth. She refuses to go willingly so they arrest her on suspicion of bigamy. "How could you? How could you do this to me?" she cries at Kirk as she's led away.

Todd still wants an explanation and Phelan tells him it's perfectly normal to change architects at this stage of a project. Todd points out that that's not what Phelan told Eileen. He also tells him that he used to work for a solicitor and worked on a case where lying, thieving low-lifes were selling holiday villas that didn't exist, making hundreds of thousands of pounds. Phelan doesn't see that it's got anything to do with Todd. "Oh really? Now who's being thick?" asks Todd.

The end

This is episode 8992, it was written by Julie Jones and directed by Nickie Lister whilst the copyright remains the property of ITV to whom many thanks.

Our focus has moved away from Plattsville to Phelan criminality where Todd is concerned for his mother who is not at home where Pat is telling Todd that he is paranoid, delusional and seeing things that aren't there. Todd says it is a scam and thinks Pat is struggling to come up with an excuse for sacking the architect. They argue as Todd is certain that he can spot a liar - which is Pat. Pat reminds him he was wrong last time. Todd wants a second opinion and heads to the Rovers for a chat with Eileen. Pat points out he never believes her. Todd leaves and Pat gets on the phone to Vinny who is in the yard at the Rovers and he knows what he has to do. He tells Eileen they have to go now. As she turns he picks up her champagne and pours it over her phone deliberately. She is worried at losing her photos. Anyway he hurries here away to the car. Todd arrives in the Rovers looking for; they think she is in the ladies and he goes in, Billy assures Liz it is not a problem as he is gay - no sign of her. Liz only wants to talk about Beth being arrested for bigamy hence delaying Todd. He returns and then heads for the back yard. [Sidelight - I know not who is dressing Liz at present but this top was really awful].

Sally, Fiz and Sinead are discussing Beth with Kirk and Maria. Sally starts adding up the cost of Beth's second "wedding" and wanting it back. Kirk will never trust her again. Billy at the bar overhears Kirk wondering if is even marries and confirms that he is sorry but their marriage will be declared null and void. So Kirk has never been married. Maria reckons that Kirk has had a lucky escape. Poor Craig wakes with one jailbird parent and ends the day with two adds Sally.

No sign of Eileen in the garden. Billy follows Todd wanting to know what is so important but Todd cannot explain - and he is worried as Eileen never turns her phone off and it is off. Todd goes looking for Eileen and tells Billy to phone him if she is seen.

Household removal at Roy's. They are removing the old double mattress. Cathy is unpacking Alex's clothes and it becomes clear he is moving into Roy/Hayley's old room. The mattress is to be recycled. Roy has ordered a new one for him and Cathy and they will use the airbed in the meantime. Cathy does not understand until Roy points out that the mattress was his and Hayley's and it does not feel right. Anna and Cathy suddenly look at each other realising they have been putting their foot in their mouth's. Cathy is worried that Roy cannot get rid of what is in his heart even though he has emptied the bedroom. So she worries about her place in his life. [Some women would insist on the bed going - Roy for his own reason is doing the right thing and she is wrongly upset about it, in my view].

At the Bistro Andrew (was Gavin remember) is pouring a nice red for Luke when spotted by "manageress of the week" Steph. She tells Andrew to put the money in the till. Initially he objects but finally does so as she is not going to turn a blind eye. Luke goes. Freddie Smith is really enjoying his meal with Audrey when we see a tall white haired smartly dressed woman come in behind Audrey and sit at the bar, Freddie does not see her. He admits to eating a goat once, called Andrew, and on hearing his voice the new arrival looks across and obviously recognises him. Audrey laughs and as she ducks her head Freddie spots the woman sitting at the bar. Andy clears the table.

At the "Carter Warehouse" Vinny is ushering Eileen out of the Range Rover. Pat is waiting for them as he wants to show her around the site of the planned development. She is impressed.

Watching this at home the tension was building as our young grandson asked what was going to happen. Pat tells Vinny to hang around in case he needs a hand with anything. The tension just grew. Eileen is impressed with the size of it. As they go inside Vinny says "Be careful these old buildings can be a deathtrap". Grandson asks repeatedly - what is he going to do to her? Pat shows her in.

Kirk is back at home with Craig, Fiz and Sinead. Fiz wants to know why Beth did not divorce Darryl like a normal person. Apparently to keep their location secret. Beth returns from the police station. She has to wait and see if the police will charge her. She tells Kirk off for grassing her up. Kirk says it was not him or Maria. Before Beth can storm over to see Maria Craig admits it was him.

Up on the roof of the old mill a pigeon flies away as Eileen complains about the workout that Pat has given her walking up the stairs. She gasps at the view and Pat tells her she is queen of all she surveys. Grandson asks why they are on the roof and asks what is going to do her. The tension is wound up a few more notches when Pat asks her to come to the edge of the roof (there is a small wall and they are three or four stories up. Pat tells her that soon all the trades will be on site and the place will start buzzing as they create new homes for local people. Eileen says she does not have a head for heights but Pat still gets her to the little wall. Grandson is hiding his eyes behind his hands and says he cannot watch. Pat tells her she has done a great thing in getting involved. She tells him they are doing it together. He asks her to trust him as he leads her to the very edge and sits on the little wall. She looks over at the drop. She waves at Vinny. Pat reminds her that they are going to make some real money. But even more importantly he says they will be leaving the world a better place than we found it. Grandson again asks what he is going to do. It upsets Pat that some people cannot see the improvements they are trying to achieve. Eileen says that they will show the naysayers. Pat makes reference to Todd's concerns. Pat does not want Todd to spoil it. Eileen observes Todd was brains and Jason was brawn, she did the donkey work. Pat tells her she is an investor, a player. Eileen is disappointed in the way Todd has turned out. Pat calls Todd jealous of their success and Eileen says she does not trust Todd. Pat puts his arms around Eileen shakes her gently and tells her that he thinks she is dead right ... So Eileen lives as Pat announces he has a real surprise for her. He steps back and tells her she is going to get it now. Is he going to push her over the edge asks grandson? Pat smiles, commercial break.

The second half opens at ground level as Eileen and Pat leave the warehouse and Pat tells Vinny it is all sorted. Vinny is taking her for a little drive. Pat smiles - he has defused Todd's concerns.

At the Bistro Audrey heads to powder her nose. Once she has gone the lady at the bar comes and stands over Freddie who stands and asks Angelica how she is. She tells him off for not wasting any time. 40 years of marriage forgotten (and she snaps her fingers). She reminds him of what he said about Sadie at the funeral. He defends having dinner with a friend. She says Sadie would be turning in her grave if she saw him swanning around with another woman. He should be ashamed of himself. She stomps out. Audrey returns but Freddie is unsettled, gets his wallet out and leaving some notes on the table says he has got to go and heads off, before they can eat their lamb shanks which Steph and Andy are bringing to the table. He is not feeling well and will be in touch soon.

Kirk says that Craig should not have done it - they could have sorted it (sounds like EastEnders script). Craig reminds Kirk that his wedding day was the best day of his life. Craig heard the vows and knows they came from the heart and Kirk agrees. Beth just lied. Beth denies it - the divorce was not important. Beth asks if she deserves to go to prison. Kirk tells her that she has ruined the memory of their wedding day. He leaves.

In the cafe Cathy emerges from the stairs. Anna has been cleaning the freezer. They chat with Cathy worried if she has made a big mistake. Roy lost Hayley too soon and if a click of the fingers could bring her back he would. Cathy acknowledges that using the bed and bedroom obviously feels to Roy like a betrayal. Cathy knows that Roy and Hayley had their personal time in that room together - and not just the sex. And she knows those memories should not be damaged. Anna says that Roy is trying to move on. But it must be in his time and at his pace. But he is making the changes for Cathy.

Todd is at home and Pat returns to tell him that Eileen has had a better offer. Pat assures Todd that she is safe. Pat assures Todd that Eileen has a fantastic future ahead of her and Todd is trying to wreck it. She is safe and now Todd needs to cool down and have a proper think about the building project. Pat tells Todd that he could be part of it all - and do well out of it - if he wanted.

Maria opens her door (why - she always buzzes people up) to find Kirk stood there with his bags. He breaks down and cries and Maria gives her brother a huge hug.

Along at the Bistro they are tidying up and Andy and Steph are discussing Freddie's sudden disappearance. As they discuss it Andy says that all men are idiots, including himself, as it is genetic. He has worked out why he has been upset. He says he is sorry. Robert can see she is management material but he sees Andy as one step up from the vacuum cleaner. But she points out he was not considered because he keeps saying the job is a stopgap (which he has been doing for about a year?). Perhaps Andy should think about what he wants to do with the rest of his life? Andy and Steph hug - she has made a very valid point.

Todd still wants to know where Eileen is and then he and Pat can talk. Pat gives him a beer and tells him to concentrate and learn. He and Vinny are talking people for everything they have got. A few grand here, a few grand there. Spreading the load. Doing them a favour in teaching them a life lesson? Todd says Pat is selling something which will never exist. Pat says they will not get caught. Vinny has it down to a fine art. When the time comes the money gets split, Vinny does a runner and takes the blame and every one else comes up smelling of roses. He tells Todd that he loves Eileen and he cannot see her struggling and working her backside off. Ten hour shifts on the switch and being paid a pittance. And does he want to ponce around in that flower shop forever? He could have the world at his feet. There is a knock at the door. It is a policewoman and she asks Pat Phelan to accompany them to the police station. Apparently some allegations have been made against hi. Apparently by Todd who does not like him cheating at Monopoly he tells the officer. The officer says it is alleged that he is planning to commit a fraud and they would like to locate Eileen Grimshaw. As he goes he observes quietly to Todd that the offer still stands and the ball is in Todd's court.

Roll credits with Pat smiling as he knows he has the upper hand.

Given that it is a scam can and they are only taking small amounts of a few thousand from people can anyone explain why they needed £60+k from Jason? The whole thing seems a bit haphazard, but perhaps that is how con artists work.

As I remarked there was palpable tension in this episode as we watched. Sorry cannot get that across on the printed page.

Who is Angelica and do we really think Freddie should be worried by her comments? I feel it was a pity that this was in the same episode as we see the lengths to which Roy is going to finally move on. Different strokes for different people - but did they really need to be contrasted in this way?

And Beth was wrong. Her excuses do not stand up and given this is not the first time Kirky and Beth have been split asunder recently I do wonder if they will recover this time.

See you next week.

Monday 19 September

Written by Martin Allen Directed by Sean Healy

Todd can't get the police to believe him about Phelan running a scam, even when telling them Phelan offered to cut him in on the deal. He's got no proof, see. Billy is concerned and thinks Todd has to do something. Todd promises to get him, but it's a question of "how".

The lads at the garage are talking trash about women, but Freddie dives behind a car door when he spots Audrey on the street, much to Kevin's amusement. Audrey is not amused. She calls him on dumping her in public. He says he can explain but she's curt with him and tells him he owes her a tenner.

Beth is still feeling down, and right she should be! Cathy tells her things will work out but Beth isn't too sure. Anna remarks that Cathy looks a bit brighter. At least they're sharing a bed even if it's currently the air bed on the floor! Anna remembers it's Roy's birthday on Wednesday. Roy confirms he has no plans. Back to Cathy who tells Anna that Alex is enjoying having his own room though hopes it's temporary. He wants one of those new flats. Cathy doesn't think he can afford one even if he had the deposit, which he didn't. Anna thinks it's just as well.

Phelan is on the phone describing who he's already sold flats too when Todd comes in. Todd reckons even though the police weren't interested, Phelan's cards have been marked. He's cocky, is Phelan, pointing out there aren't many cards to be marked when the supposed kidnapped Eileen was found in a luxury spa at his expense. Todd warns him that he's going to find proof somehow. Todd's phone rings, Phelan takes it off him and checks it, reoffering the deal. Todd laughs and says his mother isn't going to be gone forever and if he's smart, he'll get out before Eileen reports him as well. Doesn't seem to be any chance of that. Phelan asks Todd to leave before he gets him charged with trespassing. Todd laughs, picking up a photo of him and Jason but he does leave. Phelan then calls Vinny to tell him the problem (Todd) isn't going to go away.

Sharif helps Yasmeen with a necklace. Sonia comes downstairs and realizes they're going out. Yasmeen is all loved up but then realizes it's a bit tactless when her friend is still upset at her own broken marriage. Sonia tells them not to worry and to go and have a good time. Sharif throws a dark glance at Sonia as the couple leaves.

Phelan's temper needs an outlet and he smashes something heavy in the yard against the fence just as Alex comes in wanting information on a flat. Phelan realizes he can't put him off so he gathers himself together and regains his composure to talk to Alex about the affordable housing flats, saying they're going quickly. He recommends Alex get his deposit in if he still wants one and quotes 15 grand. It's too rich for Alex. Phelan suggests he could borrow it, maybe Roy? As an investment? Alex says he's see what Roy says and thanks him.

Audrey is determined that Freddie will be eating a lot of humble pie before she gives him the time of day again. She and Maria leave as Alex returns with the suggestion that Roy could lend him the deposit. Roy has no intention of that unless the flats were finished and he could see what his money was buying. He doesn't believe Phelan saying they were selling fast. Cathy's suggestion of Nessa is met with cynicism. No chance there, then.

Freddie is describing the whole sorry scene at the Bistro right down to seeing Sadie's best friend giving him a hard time. He admits to Kevin and Luke that he and Sadie agreed that the one left behind could start again freely but he also admits it still doesn't feel right for him. Kevin relates Audrey's situation, piecing her life back together after Alf died suddenly and thinks Freddie should talk to Audrey honestly.

Kirk and Caz come round the corner and see Maria. Kirk is on his way to the police to make a statement. It feels to him like he's grassing Beth up but Maria points out he just has to give his version of things. Gotta be done. She invites Kirk for a drink with she and Caz. He agrees and toddles off. Caz suggests a takeaway as well but Maria then remembers Liam has a party after school and needs picking up. She asks Caz if she'd pick up Liam while she props up Kirk and Caz agrees though she doesn't look particularly pleased at it.

Vinny is furious that Todd called the police in spite of Phelan's efforts to put him off. Phelan assures Vinny that Todd has no proof. Vinny reckons the police could start poking their noses in but Phelan doesn't think the police will bother, since Todd's complaint about Eileen was baseless. He just thought Vinny ought to be aware of what was happening. Vinny decides Todd needs to be dealt with today.

Todd comes into the pub looking for Eileen. Sean hasn't seen her and goes to ask Liz if she has had any word, when Todd more or less insists. Todd's phone rings and he sees it's Phelan who wants a chat later on. Todd only wants to talk to his mother but Phelan is cagey and tells him it's in everyone's best interest if he shows up. He just wants to settle their differences. Todd is unsettled. Sean comes back out and says Liz hasn't heard from Eileen.

Sonia is watching tv when Sharif and Yasmeen return. She plays the sympathy card and Yasmeen goes over to her to comfort her, sending Sharif for a glass of water. Sonia apologizes for imposing but is told it's not a problem. For Now, mutters Sharif.

Eileen has surfaced and she's in the cafe, working out her new phone. Cathy tells him Todd was looking for her. Alex asks Cathy to speak to Roy. Anna reiterates her disapproval of the man but Eileen reckons Todd has it wrong after experiencing the generosity of his wallet. Eileen assures Cathy that from where she stands with her involvement, it's a can't lose investment. Alex stands there looking pitiful, going for the sympathy pound, I think.

Todd has left his phone on the bar under a newspaper. Sean hears it ring and, not only thinking that a random customer has left it, answers it. It's someone for Mr. Harrison so Sean tells him it's a wrong number. He is then surprised to hear who's calling (though we don't know who that is, yet) but the phone's wallpaper shows a photo of Billy and Todd when he hangs up. Hmm..what's this all about?

Roy comes back into the empty cafe. Cathy brings up the flat investment again. Roy insists his decision is final. He won't invest in something he doesn't believe in. Cathy agrees. She has an idea and has to nip out. Outside, she calls Nessa.

Outside the flat development, a black SUV drives up with Vinny and Phelan. Vinny gets something from the back of it, a bag that clinks with heavy metal somethings in it.

Apparently, Cathy has asked Nessa about the deposit for Alex's flat and gets a resounding No. She is heard by Eileen telling her sister off for it. Cathy tells Eileen she'll get it from somewhere, has another idea and asks Eileen if they could save one for Alex. She agrees but tells Cathy they can't hold it indefinitely.

Yasmeen is telling Sharif off for his comment regarding the length of Sonia's stay. The doorbell sounds and it's Cathy asking a favour. She needs a lift and can't get where she needs to go very easily on the bus. Yasmeen grabs her keys immediately and orders Sharif to look after Sonia while she's gone. Sonia comes down as soon as the door closes. Sharif tells her they can't go on under the same roof but she thinks they just have to find a way to make it work.

In the pub, Kirk apologizes to Maria for being miserable and crowding the flat. Beth wanders in. Kirk tells her that he told the police he had no idea she was already married. When she asks him to forgive him, Maria tells her to back off and calls her on the carpet for keeping such a big secret. Kirk says he needs more time and can't promise anything. Beth goes off in tears.

Sonia is getting flirty but Sharif keeps her at bay until she very invitingly looks over her shoulder as she goes upstairs, commenting that they have the house to themselves. He watches the sway of her hips and checks his watch.

Billy comes into the bar looking for Todd and asks Sean if he's seen Todd. Sean hands Billy Todd's phone, which would be why Todd isn't in communication. Billy notices a "look" go over Sean's face. Sean tells him that he answered Todd's phone and the caller was the Bishop who was looking for Mr. Harrison. Sean suspects Todd used a fake name and suggests Billy look in the call log to see if there was a call to that same number on the day the complaint was made. Billy looks torn. He hesitates. He picks up the phone and looks. Yep. The call seems to have come from Todd.

Vinny and Phelan wait in the pretend project office. Vinny offers to cut Pat free and he can find someone else. Phelan reminds Vinny that if Todd's body is found, the police will come looking in their direction first. Vinny ominously comments "you're presuming they'll find him". Yikes! Phelan wants to talk to Todd first.

This doesn't sound good, does it?

Karen is away so I am doing this update for her. Episode 8994, written by Mark Burt and directed by Sean Healy. Copyright remains the property of ITV to whom many thanks.

We open at the Rovers where Sean is claiming more class than to say I told you so to Billy who thanks him for still caring. Billy now wants some answers from Todd over phoning the Bishop. Eva arrives and they break the news to her.

Todd is at the Grimshaws unable to find his mobile. He cannot find it. He goes out and Billy is coming along the Street waving his mobile. He tells Todd he left it in the Rovers. The phone rings - it is Pat. Billy asks how often the Bishop speaks to Mr Harrison. Todd and Billy argue about the latter's religion being on trial rather than Todd. They argue and Todd is merely saying if it was not him it would have been someone else. But Billy now doubts himself, his congregation and church. Todd says he was trying to set Billy free - which he will see eventually. Billy has had his world wrecked and now he is as lost as he was ten years ago. Billy does feel pity for Todd but he cannot hate him. Billy now sees that there is real Todd deep down - this is the real Todd. Todd is not getting a second chance and he walks away.

Meanwhile Vinny and Pat are waiting for Todd and he is late. Pat says he will do the talking when Todd arrives. Vinny says he despises violence - which Pat asks him to remember. Vinny is not so sure - he owed a lot on money to people and that can make you very desperate. This is the first Pat has heard about Vinny's problems - because previously it was not pertinent. He tells Pat to sort Todd - or he will (and he means with violence).

Yasmeen and Cathy are outside Nigel's (Alex's father) house. Alex has not seen his father for over 20 years. Cathy asks Yasmeen to wait in the car. She knocks at the door which Nigel opens and asks what she wants. He does not invite her in and he closes the door politely in her face saying there is nothing to discuss about Alex.

At the factory Aidan cannot work something out and goes searching through the filing cabinets. Some old sketches drop out.

Sharif and Sonia have been delighting each other in the marital bed. He tells her it is a one off and she agrees as the decoration is a passion killer, there are Turkish bazaars with less tat. Sharif tells her off for poking fun at Yasmeen. He agrees he is being hypocritical. But he will not have people mock his wife.

Freddie arrives at the salon with flowers for Audrey. He wants a chance to explain. But Audrey is not in forgiving mood. He tells Audrey about Angelica and her sharp tongued intervention. Freddie admits he panicked. And he could not tell Audrey because he did not know how. She shakes her head.

Cathy and Yasmeen return from their complete disaster. Yasmeen observes that you cannot make someone care. She goes indoors and Eileen approaches Cathy who tells her that there seems little chance of finding the money for a flat for Alex. Cathy suggests a reservation fee of £5k. Eileen will keep it on the books until the end of the week in case something turns up.

Pat and Vinny are still waiting. Vinny is losing patience and wants to do things his way. Then we hear footsteps. Todd arrives and apologies for having been delayed. Pat starts a welcoming speech but Todd cuts him short - he wants in. He wants in all the way.

After the break Pat is expressing surprise at the change of heart. Todd struggles to convince them - and he is not rolling over completely - there are terms. Todd says his family are off limits - whatever happens Eileen and Jason are taken care of. Or Todd will turn really annoying. Vinny reckons killing Todd now would be the best solution. Pat calls that Vinny's humour and he agrees Todd's terms. Ripping off friends and neighbours is not a problem - indeed if they are gullible enough to swallow the sales patter, they deserve to be fleeced. And Billy is no longer his boyfriend as he has established that Todd is a lying manipulative creep - which makes him their perfect salesman. And he will square it with Eileen. They all agree they are good. Vinny tells him it is the best decision he has ever made. Pat and Vinny agree this is better than the alternative.

Audrey is sympathising with Freddie. Mourning is difficult and where does all of this leave them he asks? Audrey denies being led up any garden path as Freddie asserts. And if Freddie is not ready, then he is not ready. He does not want to lose Audrey as a friend. She says that she thinks they should be just that - friends. Freddie is disappointed but agrees.

Alex is looking at papers in the Cafe when Cathy returns. Roy is upstairs making the tea and Cathy can see Alex is trying to balance the books. Cathy does not admit where she has been. She has tried to get the deposit reduced - but it did not work. Alex says he does not need special treatment but thanks her for trying. Alex knows that he needs a miracle to find £15k.

Eva reminds Sean and Billy that Todd has form for doing bad things. Billy says Todd has lied, manipulated him and yet when he made that call it was not out of malice. Todd really believed he had Billy's best interests at heart. He continues to speak on behalf of Todd against Eva and Sean's accusations. Eva gets around to apologising for thinking Sean was responsible. Sean tells Billy that they are both well rid of Todd. But Billy cannot return to work. He now shares Todd's doubts about his calling and needs to sort it out.

Sonia and Sharif are washing up. He apologises for being short earlier - it was the guilt getting to him. Sonia admits she got carried away. As they talk Sharif comforts her with his hand in the small of Sonia's back. Alya bounces downstairs and spots this closeness. She is not overly polite to Sonia.

Todd arrives at the flower shop and tells her his afternoon off was strangely liberating. He admits that he and Billy have fallen out. Tracy tries to give him a reassuring hug but he runs away from her. He realised he was trying to be decent caring and unselfish - and that is not Todd. Tracy says he is not a complete lowlife scumbag. Todd is not so sure. Todd has come to understand that certain people round here have certain expectations of him and he is not going to disappoint them. Tracy suggests a drink at home to sort this out. Todd demurs. And he will not be in, in the morning. Todd quits. Tracy says he cannot do that but he walks past her and out of the door.

At the Rovers Eva is telling Aidan about Billy's mid-life crisis but Aidan is not listening as he is studying the sketches. He shows her the drawings. She says they look familiar. Sinead and Alya did some work on a sideline collection. Aidan reckons that these drawings are better than OK.

Back at the Grimshaws Eileen tells Todd that they need to talk. Eileen tells him that the police arrived just as she was sitting in the whirlpool. Todd apologises. He had a brain melt and it will not happen again. Todd assures this is not a trick, he was in the wrong plain and simple. Eileen accepts the apology. And Billy has dumped him. Eileen is not amused given that she had to turn Sean out after Todd broke his heart. Pat arrives and gives Eileen a hug. Pat and Todd discuss who should tell her the news. Pat has offered Todd a job and he has accepted - so he is part of the team. And there is nothing more to it than that. Todd has quit working for Tracy who is not happy. Todd says that yesterday was a mistake - he was projecting his doubts and failings onto Pat. Splitting up with Billy has given him clearer vision. Eileen says it takes guts to admit when you are wrong. Todd just wants to get on selling flats. Eileen is pleased they are working together as a family. And Todd is looking forward to making a lot of money. Wide smiles from all three.

Roll credits .

See you on Friday.

Wednesday 21 September

In the cafe, Anna and Norris are discussing Beth's bigamy charge, when Roy comes down and Anna gives him a birthday card. Roy thinks that Cathy must have forgotten, unless she's planning a surprise party. Cathy comes down then, and as she puts her coat on, tells Roy she's off on some errands, but won't say exactly what it is she's doing, and then rushes out. This leads them to think that she must indeed be planning a surprise party, although Anna comments that she's left it a bit late with the invites. Roy is dismayed. "What do I do?" he asks, and Anna tells him to look surprised.

Pat is telling Todd that they must sell the vision, and it'll be easier when they get the brochures. Vinny has found some pictures on the internet, so if anyone asks they can say it's an 'approximate representation'. Todd looks thoughtful, and then asks how many they can sell. Phelan points out that they can sell as many as they like, they're not actually being built, and they can even sell the same flat to more than one person if they're careful. He goes on to say that all the deposit money will be going into Vinny's business account, and then he'll do a runner, and he and Todd can act surprised and despairing. Then they'll split the cash three ways. "I can protect my brother's money, right?" whispers Todd, as Eileen comes down the stairs. "Of course," mutters Pat.

Mary is getting the children organised for school when Erica comes downstairs with a sore head, she shouldn't have had that extra glass of wine last night. Then Dev tells Mary that they're going to take the children to see the new animated film, and will take them for their tea in town, after school. Erica would like Mary to go in her place, she has no desire to see the film, but Dev says it will help her bond with the children. Mary then wonders what she's going to do with herself later, with no dinner to cook or children to look after.

Zeedan and Alya meet Rana in the Street, and Zeedan tells her that Alya is making up fantasies about his granddad and Sonia, she thinks they flirt with each other. Rana says that she thinks they do too, but Zeedan won't have it and says they're off their heads.

Over at the garage, Freddie isn't very happy. Kevin says he thought he was going to talk to Audrey. "I did," says Freddie.

In the cafe, Ken has brought Roy in a birthday card, and Anna starts talking about the surprise birthday party, when Alex comes downstairs. He doesn't know anything about a party, and neither does Ken, who asks if Anna is sure this party is happening. Anna says that Cathy was just pretending to have forgotten Roy's birthday and has disappeared on some spurious errand. "Why don't you just ask her?" says Alex.

In actual fact, Cathy has been driven to Alex's father's house by Yasmeen, and she goes to knock on the door. Nigel opens the door and is cross to see her there. "Not you again?" he snaps. She tells him they need to talk and puts her foot in the door as he tries to shut it. Eventually he agrees to give her five minutes. Meanwhile, her mobile phone rings, but as she's left it in the car Yasmeen answers it. It's Alex, asking about the surprise party.

Back in the cafe, when Roy is out of earshot, Alex whispers to Anna and Ken that there is no surprise party. Anna then realises that Cathy must have forgotten Roy's birthday. "That's not like her," she says, "Roy's going to be heartbroken." Alex reckons there's a simple way to fix it, and picks up his phone.

Todd is at the yard looking at the new brochures, when Billy arrives, he brought some of Todd's stuff back. He remarks that he's heard Todd's now working for Phelan, which makes no sense to him at all. Todd has the grace to look rather sheepish, and says nothing.

Inside Nigel's house, Cathy looks at photos of his daughters, who have obviously been to university, and comments that he must have forked out to send them. He says he owes Alex nothing, but Cathy says he owes Alex the same as he owed his other two kids. He retorts that she doesn't know what she's talking about. "Any father would help his son," snaps Cathy, saying that a monthly allowance hardly cuts it, and tells him it's about time he made up for his appalling behaviour. An argument ensues, and Nigel comments that maybe she should take a look at where those payments actually come from. Then he refuses to say any more about it, saying that he made a promise to someone, and throws her out.

Phelan and Todd are perusing the brochures when Sharif and Sonia walk past. Todd calls out to them, and flatters Sharif saying what a shrewd businessman he is, and how he must recognise a prime investment opportunity when he sees one. Sonia looks at a brochure and says she would love to live somewhere like that. While they're talking, Tracy comes along. "Is this what you've left me for? What are you selling?" Todd tells her he's selling high end property. Tracy turns to Sharif and says Todd will let him down, he lies and stabs people in the back. "Coming from you, Tracy, I take that as a confirmation of his good character," says Sharif, and goes off looking at the brochure.

Over in the factory, Aidan calls Alya into the office, and shows her the drawings he found in the filing cabinet. She tells him not to worry, they're not working on them any more. He says she should be, they're good, she has talent. She tells him she has plenty more ideas, so he tells her to get them on paper and pitch them to him, and they'll see about getting this project off the ground. She goes off grinning.

Todd then targets Rita for a flat. He tells her that in the bank her savings are doing nothing, but if she buys a flat on a buy-to-let basis, her money will double in just a few years. He hands her a brochure and tells her to think about it. Just then Alex comes along, and they show him the brochure. He says he can't afford it, but Pat thinks he might know someone who can and urges Todd to tell him all about it. Todd obviously doesn't want to, but Phelan insists. Todd then starts to point out the main selling points of the flats, but very half-heartedly, especially when he sees Billy come out of the cafe across the road. "Tell him about the under-floor heating," says Pat. Todd thrusts the brochure at him. "You tell him," he says, and walks away.

In the pub, Ken is telling Kevin and Tyrone about the surprise party that Roy knows about. "But we mustn't give away the fact that we know he knows," says Ken. "Gotcha!" says Kevin. Ken turns and asks Freddie if he's coming, but Freddie says he's busy. They urge him to come for just half and hour, and to bring Audrey. Freddie says he doubts he'll see Audrey today. When Ken and Tyrone have gone, Kevin asks Freddie what happened with Audrey, and Freddie tells him they've agreed to be friends as Audrey thinks it's too soon after his wife has died. Kevin points out that everything was fine until he bumped into his wife's friend, and who cares what she thinks?

Roy asks Anna what time he should expect his surprise guests and she tells him 5.30. Mary comes into the cafe and Anna tells her about the party. Mary wants to help, but Anna declines her offer.

Tracy is in the cafe, on the phone, trying to get a new assistant. Mary overhears and offers her services, telling her that her current situation gives her plenty of free time, and she can start tomorrow. In the end, reluctantly, Tracy agrees to give her a week's trial.

At home, Alya is telling Rana, Sharif and Zeedan how interested Aidan is in her designs. Just then Sonia comes down and asks if the good smell of cooking food is down to Sharif. "I have my skills," he grins, and Sonia smirks. Alya and Rana exchange glances.

The party has started in the cafe, but Cathy has not yet returned. Just then she walks through the door. "What's all this?" she asks, and then realises that she has forgotten Roy's birthday. "Where've you been?" asks Anna, and Yasmeen says Cathy was helping with the community gardening project. Cathy apologises to Roy and goes off to get changed.

Upstairs in the flat, she gets out Alex's bank statements and sees a regular deposit from something called New Haven.

Pat and Todd are in the pub, he asks why Todd had a sudden attack of conscience, and then figures it's something to do with Billy. Todd tells him that Billy sleeps like a baby at night, he hasn't slept like that in years. Pat reminds him that his mother and Jason's money is tied up in the venture. If it fails, they lose everything.

Back in the cafe, Yasmeen asks Cathy if she's ok. She tells Yasmeen about the reference to New Haven and says it was where her late husband had a small business, and where she later found out he was seeing Nessa. She thinks Alex must be the product of that affair.

Friday 23 September

Here's the first Friday episode.

It's morning in the cafe and Alex and Roy discuss the origin of the phrase "give it a good bottoming." Cathy comes in and seems distressed.

Over breakfast, Mary reassures the twins that she'll still be around for them but will be filling in her days at the flower shop. Except for today - today she might not be able to pick them up because it's her induction day. The twins want her to buy them the first of a new model magazine series but Erica tells them the magazines are a waste of money - the models work out to be very expensive by the time the run of the magazine ends. She tells Mary she's too soft and she'll take the twins to a model shop.

Back in the cafe, Alya and Sinead discuss their original designs. Cathy gets their order wrong and snaps at Alex. Roy has to go out to see their egg supplier and Cathy seems upset that he's going.

In the salon, a customer who got her hair styled like Victoria Beckham's leaves and Freddie comes in. He asks Audrey to come to lunch but she insists she's fully booked and too busy. Maria tells her off but Audrey insists she and Freddie are just good friends.

It seems that an induction day in the flower shop consists of Mary playing around with the flowers while Tracy reads a magazine. Mary's stayed up all night memorising the Latin names of flowers but Tracy doesn't care. Erica comes in to see Mary, ignoring Tracy's comments about flower sales. She asks Mary how she can put up with Tracy and Mary points out she used to work with Norris. Erica's managed to shrink Asha's school jumper down to a toddler size by putting it on a boil wash. Mary gives her the name of the shop where she can buy a replacement.

In the factory, Sally accuses Jenny of having her ham and cheese croissant, pointing to the evidence of pastry down Jenny's shirt front. Jenny points out that the pastry is the remains of her pan au chocolat. Jenny is going away to a trade fair with Johnny and they're then going on holiday in France, she says. Aidan tells them off for not working and Eva sulks that she didn't know Johnny and Jenny were going on holiday together.

Mary's in the cafe going on (and on and on. . .) about working with flowers. Cathy sneaks a chance to send a text message: Ring me, it's urgent. As Freddy and Tyrone discuss relationships, Cathy gets her reply from Nigel: "Leave me alone." She rushes out, leaving Alex in charge of the cafe.

Sonia's making a cake when Alya comes into the house and warns her she's overstayed her welcome.

Back in the cafe (again) Sally orders a leek and potato soup and Alex hands her a package she forgot this morning. It's her ham and cheese croissant and Jenny's standing just behind her, smirking. Ouchie! Alex has somehow poured boiling soup on his own arm. Freddy and Tyrone administer first aid with Sally shouting instructions. Roy comes in and decides to take Alex to the hospital. Nobody knows where Cathy has gone so Roy asks Sally to take charge of the cafe. Despite the spin-off series possibilities this holds, though, we never see her in charge.

Cathy's off outside a strange house, banging on the windows and doors that she needs the truth about Alex. Nigel shuts the curtains in her face.

While Alya and Sinead discuss their designs with Aidan, Johnny goes on to the factory floor and offers Jenny the chance to knock off early so she can pack. She refuses and says she'll work till 5 like everybody else. Johnny goes back into the office and tells Aidan, Alya and Sinead that this is all pie in the sky. They'll never be able to make the designs up cheaply enough to give them a decent profit on them.

Sharif arrives home and finds Sonia icing her cake. She tells him what Alya said and he immediately panics that Alya suspects something. "You will have to leave! It's too dangerous!" Sonia talks to him about the new flats and how handy they would be if she lived in one. If she knew she was moving into one of them she'd be happy to leave and rent somewhere in the meantime.

Cathy's stocked up on coffee and food and is about to settle into the Woody for a stake-out when Nigel comes out and invites her in, warning her: "You've asked for this."

Sharif meets Alya outside the factory and asks her whether she spoke to Sonia about leaving. Alya says she's noticed the coy looks that Sonia gives him and the way Sonia laughs at any little thing he says. "She's on the rebound and she's after you!"

Audrey's sweeping outside the salon and Freddy goes over to chat with her. Maria brings out a couple of cuppas and Audrey suddenly remembers something she has to do inside. "Thanks for trying, sweetheart," says Freddy. Maria tells him not to give up yet.

Aadi's asked Erica for help memorising the countries of Africa. Erica scoffs at the very idea of needing to know such stuff. Asha, meanwhile, has gone straight to Mary at the florist's. Mary's reciting the counties of Africa quite happily - at least, she is until Tracy gives her a tongue-lashing for not working. The twins decide they've got to do something to get Our Mary back.

Sharif tells Sonia that Alya suspects Sonia is trying to snare him. They discuss ways of persuading Yasmeen that buying an apartment would be a good idea.

In the hospital, Alex doesn't like his bandage and he wants his Aunty Cathy.

Cathy's sitting in Nigel's front room cutting to the chase. "Was my husband Alex's father?" "Yeah, yes, he was.

The end of the first episode.

Busy time with updates at the moment. This is episode 8997 and was written by Simon Crowther and directed by Sean Healy. Copyright remains the property of ITV to whom many thanks.

Our opening scene is at Nigel's house where Cathy is going to be told the truth she deserves to know. Nigel did not know that Alex was not his until the lad was three. He went along with the deception because of Cathy, because of Alex - he was Nigel's son by then. Nigel had been talked out of telling Cathy. Nigel recalls a BBQ where he was threatening to tell Cathy and her husband went home sick. Apparently Nigel got Cathy's husband to setup a trust fund for Alex - Cathy had always wondered why the finances never added up. After Nigel and Nessa split she prevented him from seeing Alex and he stopped trying. Cathy does not know if she will tell Alex - but after she leaves Nigel finds an old photo of Alex and kisses it - he does love the bundle of trouble.

Johnny does not understand what is so good about the Alya/Sinead designs - but Aidan says no-one else is doing anything like it. Johnny says wearers would look like a Dickensian prostitute. Aidan reckons a vintage line would work. Johnny has been in the business 38 years and he has never heard of people going to bed dressed as Lillie Langtry. [Ask Jenny if she would Johnny - I dare you]. Aidan wishes him a successful trade fair and a good break in France.

Cathy returns to Roys Rolls - which is closed. Roy is nowhere around. She sits down and phones Nessa.

Audrey and Maria are doing the hair of a pair of identical twins. Maria is ribbing Audrey about Freddie - she thinks that Audrey still likes him. One of the twins says give him another chance and the other disagrees. Eventually Audrey admits she is prepared to like him as a friend.

Mary texts Erica at the shop asking the latter to cook tea. Erica tells Dev that he has got to sort this.

A glam looking Jenny is taking off for her trip with Johnny. She has all she needs. Apparently they are going to Bournemouth and then through the Chunnel. Rita is proud that Jenny is going to a trade fair and reckons she has come a long way. Which since her breakdown she has.

Maria is telling Ty that Audrey has not quite been telling the truth, but she is not sure that Freddie is really ready for romance yet. So Ty will drop some hints to Freddie.

Roy and Alex return from the hospital (surely the attention needed could have been undertaken at the medical centre?) arguing over Elton John as Alex assures Roy he was in the Beatles! Cathy is still on the phone to Nessa when they come into the cafe. Roy tells her about Alex's burnt hand. Cathy does not tell Alex where she has been. She sends Alex upstairs. Roy wants to know what is wrong with Cathy, but she is not yet willing to explain.

Sharif is explaining to Yasmeen the need to buy a flat and finding Sonia somewhere in the meantime. Tariq is a waste of space according to Sharif. Yasmeen has no burning desire to fund her oldest friend's future. Sharif reminds Yasmeen that Sonia has looked after her in the past.

In Roy's flat he is cooking tea when Cathy comes upstairs. Alex's day may have been traumatic - hers was worse. Cathy is then nasty to Roy who does not deserve it. He is upset that she deserted Alex earlier. Cathy has a rant about how Nessa always wanted everything she had. She eventually gets round to admitting that her late husband is Alex's real father, not Nigel.

After the break we are in the Rovers with Kev and Ty talking some sense into Freddie. Kev asks Freddie about his old sidecar - not used in years. Kev tells him to get it cleaned up and he reckons that Audrey would enjoy the ride. Ty reckons that Audrey would be bang up for that. They assure Freddie they are serious. Slowly he comes around.

At the bar Chesney is telling Sinead and Alya about Big Garth from the market. He consumed a chicken doner, two large chips and a chili burger. Chesney did not give him a discount but was generous with the portions! Aidan arrives - Sinead and ALya have been waiting for him. He reckons the buyers he has been to see will nibble. He gives them a big thanks and says he will drop an extra £50 in their wage packets. Sinead is over the moon. Alya demurs so he offers to make it £60. Alya says he cannot steal their designs like this. He reckons they will learn from seeing their ideas going into production. Alya says they are being ripped off. Alya is not happy and goes.

Erica serves Aadi and Asha some chicken curry. Apparently they do not like curry - and Erica does not know how they can not like curry - so Asha accuses her of being racist. Aadi assures Erica that on Friday Mary always serves them fish fingers - fish Friday adds Asha. Erica concedes and makes fish fingers (eventually).

Later Mary is being updated on dinner of fish fingers and sticky toffee pudding - the latter Erica had to go and buy the custard! Mary makes it clear that she does not follow Christian cliches to plan her menus! The children are sent upstairs. They argue with Dev but Mary makes it clear they should obey. Both go upstairs. Dev has printed a copy of Mary's contract which he asks her to read. He reminds her that she is supposed to prepare the meals whilst the children are at school and to help them with their homework in the evenings. She agrees to hand in her resignation to Tracy tomorrow. Erica asks Mary if the children like curry. Apparently they particularly like chicken curry. Erica now knows that they had her completely.

Over dinner at the Nazir's Sharif and Yasmeen tell Alya that they will be buying one of Pat's flats which Sonia will live in. Apparently the plans show very pretty flats and Sonia will find somewhere in the meantime. It is a long term investment for Alya and Zeedan - but the debacle of the underwear designs is still weighing on Alya's mind. She says to Sonia that she hopes that she will find someone who will pay for her in the way that her grandparents are paying for Sonia. Yasmeen tells her off for being rude.

At the salon Audrey is looking forward to closing time. And the scissors are a nightmare - Audrey will order some more. They will both be glad when David gets back. There is the sound of a horn and outside we see Freddie arriving on a very smart motorcycle and sidecar combination. Freddie has booked a table for two in a little country pub. Audrey says that he does have some cheek. He admits he panicked and made a mistake and friendship is fine for now. And who knows if something will develop down the line?

Alya challenges Sharif that he did not tell her off for being rude - which is most unlike him. She has seen the way Sharif and Sonia look at each other and she knows something is happening. He says he will put a stop to it. Alya threatens to tell Yasmeen. Sharif says he will tell her the truth if she does not tell Yasmeen. He tells a lie saying that something happened once many years ago and ever since Sonia has held it over him. Alya thought they just fancied each other. He makes out that he has to keep Sonia sweet. He tells her Yasmeen would be devastated if she found out.

Audrey and Freddie ride off into the future (or a pub). Rita cannot believe her eyes and tells the paperboy display that she has just seen Audrey in a sidecar! Ty and Kev also wave as they go by.

Sharif has spent many years regretting his moment of madness. And Sonia suddenly appearing has been his worst nightmare. It meant nothing to him, indeed he can barely remember it. But Sonia does and he reckons the family has suffered enough. He asks Alya not to destroy the family because of something dating back many years. For love of Yasmeen please keep the secret. he is trying to get Sonia out so they can get back to normal. Alya says she will let him know and goes out. Sharif is in deep do-do (but see below).

Alex has not touched the pizza Roy prepared. Roy tells Cathy that Alex needs her to comfort him. She says she is not Alex's mother. But she is his aunt and always will be Roy points out. Roy adds that it is not Alex's fault. He asks Cathy to stop punishing Alex. Cathy wants Roy to help her feel better. He says he is sorry she has had such a shock today. This does not placate her. She says goodnight still as upset as ever. Roy looks at the photo of Hayley on the mantlepiece and then picks it up.

A quick summary this week....

Cathy's showing a side of her that's not very pleasant. She's upset at finding out about her late husband being Alex's father and seems to be taking it out on everyone, especially Roy and Alex, snapping and shouting and being very rude and insulting. But before she could tell Alex, Roy took him to the allotment and discovered that Alex has know his parentage for years. Alan told him! Alex never told Cathy because he didn't want to upset her.

The Alahan twins have persuaded Dev to expand the family business and they've brought home flowers grown in the school garden to sell. Wait, What? Dev has been selling flowers for years and years? Anyway, they make up bouquets and put up a stall in front of the shop and the bouquets are quite nice, too, nicer than Dev's usual buds. Tracy finds out and is not best pleased at the competition and goes shouting the odds down the road.

Kirk is wallowing, upset over the situation with Beth. Maria has a word with Beth, mainly in sympathy, advising her to be really and truly honest with him or she'll lose him. We also find out that she's got a hearing in court today on the bigamy charge. Beth comes to see him, bearing flowers and pours her heart out to him. He's reluctant, after being hurt so much, to forgive her but he does accept the flowers. She asks him to come to the court hearing, tells him when she has to catch the bus, and leaves without getting his answer.

Andy has decided to try to write, a horror novel, apparently. He wants to know if it's any good. Mary gets wind of it and reads it and she thinks it's pretty good. Michelle is still rude to Robert over the whole Carla incident even though Robert was probably the most innocent one of all those involved. She's getting set for some new wedding clients, VIPs apparently.

Alya marked Sonia's cards well and truly, revealing she knows about the "fling", and angry that Sonia is trying to get Sharif's money for the flat as well. She realizes Sonia wouldn't mind in the least if Yasmeen found out about her husband's lover. Sharif later makes sure she knows what story he told Alya, that their "affair" was a one night stand. Alya consults Aidan about creating her designs. He insists that Underworld will own the designs and then tells her that the designs were hand stitched and they can't make any money doing that. They'd have to buy special machines and there would be more overhead. She asks him, what if she can put up half the money for investment. He challenges her, if she can find the first 14 grand for the initial investment, he can handle the overhead and the rest. She takes the challenge.

Todd meets the Nazirs and Sonia for a sales talk. Sonia and Yasmeen are excited, Alya, interrupting, is sarcastic and Sharif wants to think about it. He then has a quiet word with Alya to try to stop her throwing attitude around. He tries to make her realize that if she told her grandmother about the affair, it would destroy her. She agrees but then blackmails him for 14 thousand pounds.

Sharif can't believe his own granddaughter would demand £14, 000 to keep quiet but Alya makes it quite clear she means business and tells him to have the money in her bank account by the end of the week. But the moment Alya leaves the Bistro and is on her own in the street she looks on the verge of a panic attack as the realization of what she's done sinks in.

Over at the allotment, Roy is having a heart to heart with Alex. Roy reassures Alex that none of this his fault and tells him that Cathy will comes round in her own time and that she cares for Alex very much.

Back at the Bistro, Yasmeen, Sharif and Sonia are sitting together. Yasmeen is full of excitement at the idea of buying the flat which will sort out their current living arrangements. But Sharif seems distracted and Yasmeen is exasperated when he suddenly announces he's had a change of heart and says perhaps they're being too hasty and shouldn't rush into it. The moment Yasmeen leaves Sonia asks Sharif what's really going on.

Beth is on the way to her hearing and Sinead keeps her company at the bus stop. Beth perks up when Craig walks past but he doesn't want anything to do with her. It doesn't look as though Kirk is going to support her either. Beth so wanted him by her side. She tells Sinead it's something to do with his comforting smell, which she likens to Victoria sponge cake, fresh out of the oven. As the Wayfarer pulls away from the kerb with Beth on board we see Kirk watching from across the street.

Over in Preston's Petals, Tracy is reprimanding Mary for sending text messages on company time. Mary explains she's giving support to Andy who turns out to be quite a wordsmith and is in need of encouragement. While Mary goes through to the back to sort out the freesias, Dev's twins come in. Tracy tells them to get out but they've come with an ultimatum – if Tracy lets Mary go they will give up their flower stall. Mary smiles to herself as she realises how much they miss her.

We return to the Bistro where Sharif has told Sonia about Alya's blackmailing. Sonia says she understands why he has to accept Alya's terms but, at the same time, she's not prepared to continue as they are and she needs a roof over her head. Sharif asks how he's supposed to make that happen. With a touch of menace in her voice, Sonia says he'll find a way.

Alya arrives back at the factory and tells Aidan she's managed to secure a loan for her share of the business. They shake hands on their deal – fifty-fifty partners. Sinead comes hurrying over, full of excitement when she realises what's going on. As Sinead returns to her machine, Aidan turns to Alya and tells her to let Sinead down gently.

Andy is busy in the Bistro. He takes a call on his mobile. He tells Mary he can't talk now but suddenly changes his tune when he hears what she has to say. "Do you think I'm really that good?" he asks.

Meanwhile in the Bistro Cathy seems stressed. Kirk comes in with Ozzy. She tells him he can't bring the dog in but Kirk explains Ozzy is under the weather. Then Roy and Alex arrive back from the allotment. Roy tells Cathy they need to talk, as a family, and that Alex has something he wants to say. But Roy is taken by surprise when Alex announces he loves living there but he's decided to go and live with his mum in Inverness. Cathy doesn't seem the least bit bothered by this announcement and simply says that's fine. Roy looks totally bewildered by Cathy's reaction.

In Roy's Rolls Sharif is on the phone to the bank, attempting to secure a loan, clearly without success. Dev comes in and jokingly asks if Sharif was talking to his bit on the side. The joke doesn't go down too well. Undeterred, Dev says he wants to talk about expanding their business empire, perhaps invest in some more equipment? After all, he says, they have the money in the bank. Sharif looks thoughtful and says he'll come back to him.

Behind the cafe counter, Roy is trying to talk some sense into Cathy. He points out that Alex is only planning to go and live with his mother because of Cathy's behaviour. As they talk it comes out that Alex has known all along that Alan was his father.

We return to the factory where Alya lets Sinead know that instead of being business partners she'll have to make do with a £100 bonus in her wage packet. Sinead can't believe it – she thought they were mates. Aidan is watching from the side-lines. He tells Alya he didn't know she could be so tough. Alya replies that if you're not tough in business then people walk all over you.

In the Rovers Luke has his eye on an attractive young woman but as he's in the process of buying her a drink, Andy arrives and puts the mockers on his attempts to chat her up.

Dev comes in next, bearing a bouquet of flowers for Erica. He's swiftly followed by Tracy who is on the warpath. His kids are out of control with their flower stall and she tells him to sort it.

Sinead is at the bar where she's joined by Craig. He's anxious to know whether she's heard how Beth got on. At that moment Beth comes in – she doesn't look happy.

Mary is back at home with the twins. They want her to give up her job with Tracy but she tells them she needs something to do while they're at school all day. Aadi suggests hopefully they could not go to school. Mary laughs and hugs them both to her and tells them they are her little angels.

Back in the Rovers Beth tells Sinead and Craig she has to pay a £150 fine and do some community service. She's not keen on the idea of wearing an orange tabard and picking up litter but says she's done the crime so now she has to do the time. And since she's been punished, perhaps Craig could come home now? "I don't think so," says Craig before marching out.

Luke's getting on well with the girl in the Rovers – he asks Andy if they can postpone their planned trip to the cinema. But Andy was hoping it would give him some inspiration for his new-found career as a horror fiction writer.

Behind the bar Liz can't resist reading the card that came with Erica's bouquet of flowers from Dev. "For the love of my life. Rest in peace" she reads out. "For my Doreen, never forgotten," continues Erica, taking the card from her. realization dawns – the twins have been nicking flowers for their stall from a cemetery.

Roy's Rolls has closed for the evening. Cathy gives Alex his tea and talks to him about Alan. Alex asks if she hates him. Cathy replies that she doesn't hate him, she just wishes he'd been more honest. Roy steps in and points out that it's Alan and Nessa who should have been honest. But Cathy has a strangely warped view of the whole situation and, despite Alex apologising, she still insists he should have told her the truth.

Over at the gym, Sharif is still on the phone trying to sort out his finances. He steps away from Gary and Dev and we hear him tell the bank to make a transfer from the company into his personal account.

As Roy and Cathy stack up the cafe chairs Roy tries to take her to task over the way she's handled Alex. He tells her that Alex has done nothing wrong and yet he's the casualty of her pig-headedness. Her view is that Alex lied but Roy says that, in Alex's own words, he kept the secret because he didn't want to hurt her. But Cathy won't be swayed and blames Alex for the fact that she spent her whole life married to a man who didn't even love her. And the real nub of the problem as far as Cathy is concerned is that, despite the fact that she practically raised Alex herself, she has never had a child of her own. She tells Roy he doesn't get it. He agrees that he doesn't understand how she can be so irrational. Cathy replies that she may be irrational but at least she has emotions and she shouts that talking to Roy is sometimes like talking to a flaming robot. Roy announces that he's decided that he'll drive Alex up to Inverness himself. He adds that he thinks it's best if he and Cathy spend some time apart and, with that, he takes himself upstairs.

Wednesday 28 September

Fiz and Tyrone arrive at the cafe to find Roy studying the map for his journey to Inverness with Alex. They remark that he's cutting it fine, it's a five hour journey. He says it's going to take longer than that, he doesn't go on motorways. Just then Cathy and Alex come down with all of Alex's bags, and take them out to the car. Tyrone then decides to do the driving, and says he won't take no for an answer.

Over at a table, Sharif and Yasmeen are discussing the purchase of a flat. She's puzzled by his change of attitude, but he tells her that he's done his homework and it seems like a sound investment.

Cathy says goodbye to Alex and he, Roy and Fiz go out to the car. Tyrone asks Cathy if she's coming out to wave them off, but she says she doesn't like goodbyes and walks away.

Todd arrives at the yard where Phelan and Vinny are looking at a model of the proposed new flats. Phelan reckons that with it, along with Todd's gift of the gab, the flats will fly off the books. Just then Eileen arrives and is blown away with the model. She takes photos of it to send to Jason. "It's really happening!" she says.

Ozzie is still under the weather and Kirk is concerned. Maria comes in and asks if he's been to see how Beth got on at her hearing, but Kirk can only think about Ozzie, and says he's going to take him out to see if that cheers him up. Caz says she'll go with him, and then quietly tells Maria they won't come back until he's promised to sort things out with Beth.

Back in the cafe, Fiz asks Cathy why Alex is really leaving. Cathy tries to fob her off, saying it's a family matter. Fiz points out that they are family too – blood isn't everything. "Oh yes it is!" says Cathy, "blood is the trump card, blood can turn your whole world upside down!" She then goes on to tell Fiz that Alex is Alan's son, and it seems that Alex has known for years. "Poor Alex," says Fiz, very sympathetic. Cathy tells her she sounds like Roy, but she should try being the one they're all laughing at! Todd comes in then, and, while buying a cuppa to go, asks where Alex is. He's surprised to hear he's gone to live with his mother.

As he steps out of the cafe, he meets Billy on the pavement who grunts "Hi," and goes to walk past. Todd calls him back and asks if they can't at least be civil. Billy pats his face. "Here – the other cheek, happy now?" he snaps, and walks on. All this is watched by Eileen from upstairs at the yard.

Kirk and Caz are walking down the road talking about his non-marriage to Beth when Ozzie suddenly collapses.

Tyrone, Roy and Alex have stopped so that Alex can take a few photos, when Woody starts overheating.

Back in the cafe, Cathy tells Fiz that Roy can't believe that she's being so cruel, but every time she looks at Alex she sees Alan staring back. She never had a baby of her own, although she wanted one, Alan wasn't bothered. Fiz tells Cathy that when she looks at Hope now, all she sees is a lovely little girl, she's not her daddy, and Alex is the same, all she has to do is try. Just then the phone rings, it's Tyrone telling Cathy that Kevin isn't answering the phone, but they need a new thermostat for the car. Just as he's telling her the engine is smoking badly, a car passes them and splashes the phone, cutting them off. Cathy immediately panics, thinking the car is on fire.

Erica is telling Dev how the expensive arrangement of flowers she put on her auntie's grave was stolen. She tells Aadi and Asha how she reported it to the police and was told there has been a spate of thefts like it recently. She tells them how the police take this sort of thing very seriously. The kids look worried.

Kevin arrives back in the Street in his breakdown truck, and Cathy and Fiz rush out to him in a panic. Just then his own phone rings, it's Tyrone. Cathy sits down, sighing with relief that they're all ok. Cathy tells Kevin to take the tow truck. "I'm not towing Woody all the way to Inverness," says Kevin. Cathy tells him to tow them home. "What if it's too late, Fiz?" she says, "What if I've lost them both?"

Outside the yard, we see that they've set up a Portacabin with potted plants and large pictures and the model of the proposed flats, it all looks very professional. Todd is in his best 'salesman' mode, and is doing the deal with Sharif, getting him to sign on the dotted line. Eileen then pops her head out and tell them she's secured a page in the pull out property section of the Gazette, and they're meeting the reporter at 4pm at the site. Todd says he'll give it a miss, and walks off.

While Tyrone and Roy are waiting for Kevin, Roy says that he must learn not to judge Cathy by Hayley's standards, they are different people. Tyrone points out that Roy must think Cathy's special, he's engaged to her. Just then the breakdown truck pulls up and Cathy jumps out and runs over. She tells them she's sorry and asks them to come home. She tells Alex it's Alan she's angry with, not him, and then turns to Roy and asks if they can start again. Then they all hug.

Dev, Erica and the children are finishing a meal, but Aadi hasn't eaten much. Then he confesses that it was them who took the flowers from the graves. They wanted to get Mary back from Tracy's, but now he's worried they'll be sent to gaol. Erica says no one is going to gaol, she just said that, but they should think about the families they upset. Dev makes them promise they'll never do it again, and thinks that should be an end to it, but Erica pushes for punishment and is still unimpressed when he decides they should have no TV until tomorrow. "A whole 24 hours?" she snorts, and raises her eyebrows.

Gary and Sharif are in the Bistro, Gary's pushing for more equipment in the gym, when Alya comes in. Sharif watches as she goes over to Aidan and hands him a cheque. Sharif then tells Gary they can't afford it at the moment and he should ask him again next quarter.

Erica comes downstairs with the kids' ipads in her hand. She's discovered that they've been watching their favourite programmes on them. "But not on TV," says Dev when she confronts him with them. She tells him they're running rings around him, and Asha didn't even seem sorry. "Doesn't that worry you?" she asks. "No," he says, and goes on to say that what worries him are her threats to call the police just to hammer a point home. Erica thinks that if it puts the fear of God into them then it's ok, but Dev argues that they've known enough fear, they had their mother snatched away from them. Erica says they're great kids, but she implores him not to spoil them.

Roy, Alex and Tyrone are back in the Street. Cathy says they must phone Nessa. "Inverness's loss is our gain," she says.

Caz goes back to the flat and tearfully tells Maria that they took Ozzie to the vet, he's got cancer and there's nothing they can do, and he'll be put down tomorrow. Just then Kirk comes in carrying Ozzie, saying they thought she would want to say goodbye.

As Woody is offloaded from the pickup truck, Tyrone tells Fiz that he thinks Roy doesn't love Cathy, he's just settling for second best.

Meanwhile, a very happy and excited Cathy is walking with Roy and Alex back to the cafe, talking nineteen to the dozen, it's a fresh start, square 1, the first day of the rest of their lives! Roy manages a weak smile.

Eileen sees Billy in the corner shop and tells him she knows that Todd calling the bishop was out of order, but he only did it because he was crazy about Billy – and still is. Billy tells her that maybe she wouldn't be speaking up for Todd if she knew what he'd been saying about Phelan and Vinny. He tells her that Todd despises them and he fears for Todd as they seem to have some sort of hold over him. Eileen scoffs, but Billy tells her to open her eyes. "Do you even know who you're living with? Whatever Pat is doing, you're up to your neck in it too." Eileen just stares pityingly at him for a moment and then just tuts and walks away.

Billy says that he didn't say much because he realised he was hurting her when it was Todd he was angry with. Todd explains he made a mistake when he said he did trust Pat. He thought it was a scam but he says he got it wrong. He says he got a solicitor friend to look over the paperwork and it is totally 'kosher'. He then asks Billy what he is doing. Billy says he is clearing a squat in Inkerman Street (hope it wasn't no.19 .. viewers who have very long memories will remember the significance of the address !). Todd offers to help, but Billy refuses. Todd says he isn't doing it for him, but doing it for charity.

In the salon Gail asks Audrey if she is seeing Freddie tonight. She says they haven't made any plans. David's mobile rings again. Audrey is getting very annoyed about it and asks Gail to turn it off. Gail sees that it says that "Macca has made a new post" and David comes and grabs it back. David reads out "Great news for our kid" and wonders what it means.

Ty gives Roy back his car, telling him that he has cleaned and polished it all. Ty then asks him if he remembers Cyril, the bat they got him for his birthday. He and Fiz thought it would help after Hayley died. He thought that if Roy went to visit him, he would meet other like-minded people. Ty is concerned that he and Cathy are not entirely suitable. Roy says he loves Cathy, but Ty says he loves Kevin but he isn't going to marry him!

Todd and Billy and some lads are busy emptying the house. They discuss their relative jobs, and Todd says that Billy ought to thank him for helping him to move away from the church. Billy says he is only just looking at seeing what else is around. Then Todd picks up some rubbish and there is a hypodermic needle amongst it, and he has stabbed himself. Billy says he has to go to hospital to get it checked.

Todd tells Billy that he doesn't need to wait, but Billy says he doesn't mind. Todd goes through what is likely to happen. He says he has gone through it before. Billy asks him how come ....

Aidan sees Maria and Liam in the street looking sad. He asks Liam what is wrong, and Liam says that he is sad because Ozzie is going to heaven to be with his doggy-mummy. Aidan offers to take Liam away for a kick-about.

Todd tells Billy that he knew a guy when he was in London who was HIV positive. He walked away from his marriage for Todd. When he was diagnosed with HIV, he thought Todd had given it to him. Billy asks where it went wrong. Todd explains that he was going to propose when he said he was going back to his wife. Since then he has never trusted anybody again. The nurse then calls him in.

Maria, Caz, Todd and Beth are gathered around Ozzie. They are all sobbing. Kirk sings the first line of 'God Only Knows'.

Cathy comes into the cafe with bags of shopping. She is making a special tea for him and Alex as an apology. Cathy tells Roy that Alex has had a lot of upset in his life, and as they are his new family they should make him feel safe. Roy wants to set a date for the wedding.

Todd comes out of the clinic to Billy, and says he has a prescription for PEP. They both say how they have missed each other. Todd hopes that Billy will give him another chance, but Billy says it is too soon and he needs more time to think. Billy goes to call for a cab, and Todd pulls out a leaflet about Pat's development and nods to himself 'no'.

Maria thanks Caz for giving up her bed for Kirk. Caz thinks that Kirk and Beth are going to get back together again soon.

Todd goes into the Rovers and goes to Pat. He asks Todd where he has been. He explains he has had the "day from hell" and doesn't need him in his face. Pat thinks Todd should have more respect for him as he has helped him. Todd says he has no respect for him. Pat reminds him that he came to work for him. Todd says he wants to be better. Eileen calls over asking if they are both alright. Pat reassures her they are. He tells Todd to hold his nerve for a few more weeks and he will be laughing all the way to the bank. Todd says he wants out. Pat tells him that he can't just walk away when he fancies. He tells him to think about his mother. He says his and he is not going to say anything unless he drops his mother or Jason in it and then he will blow the whole scam.

So what was the purpose of the extra episode? Possibly to give longer scenes about Ozzy? Oh well your two regular reporters, will be up next.

Friday 30 September

Hello, we're off to the first Friday episode.

Eileen's decided she can't be the creative executive online and needs to go to some actual shops. She wants a proper sense of what the flats will look like inside. Phelan points out they're not even built yet. Todd gets up but the anti-HIV drug means he's had a sleepless night. He tells Eileen he's quit - Phelan says he didn't mention it because he hopes Todd will change his mind.

It's breakfast time at the Platts' place and Gail and Michael eat boiled eggs in matching novelty eggcups. Gail complains that David's very withdrawn and obsessed with checking his phone to see what Macca's posted. David comes down and ignores Michael's greeting. His phone goes and he moves away. Sarah leaves without eating - she's treating Bethany to breakfast at the cafe. Bethany's nervous about the first day of school because of the bullies. David comes back and says the family liaison officer wants to come round. He knows it'll be bad news because Macca's been posting about some great news.

Maria' asleep on the sofa and Caz strokes her cheek, stopping when Kirk comes in. She says Maria fell asleep in the sofa and she didn't have the heart to wake her. Maria wakes up and she and Kirk discuss the fact that lots of dogs died in the kennels (obviously awful kennels!) and yet they're still upset over Ozzie's death. Kirk's going to pick up Ozzie's ashes. Caz offers to go with him and suggests they scatter the ashes in Ozzie's favourite place. Kirk's not sure they can do that at the butcher's on Balaclava Terrace.

Billy and Todd are in the cafe, discussing Todd quitting his job. Todd's more worried about Billy and apologises for what he told the bishop. "If I could take it back, I would." Billy seems quite touched and asks Todd what's come over him. Todd says he's finally realised what's important in life and he wants to do some good for a change.

At a nearby table, Gary gives Bethany some advice on dealing with the bullies. Bethany goes off to school and Sarah gets a phone call from her Uncle Steven.

Vinny arrives at the yard just as Eileen's leaving for the shops. Phelan assures him she's just looking and it gets Eileen out of their hair. He tells Vinny about Todd and says he'll change his mind.

Uncle Steven's going to give Sarah 15,000 pounds. He wants to buy back the shares he gave her for birthdays and Christmases. David says she should take the money. Gail and Michael think she should weight up her decision first. The family liaison officer arrives.

Cathy and Roy tell Fiz and Tyrone they've set the wedding date for December. "It's what we both want," Roy assures them. Cathy asks if Hope and Ruby can be flower girls. Tyrone seems less than enthusiastic and Fiz gives him a hissing-to on the way out the door.

The FLO tells David and Gail that a manslaughter charge is being added to the murder one so that if Clayton is found not guilty of murder, the jury might convict him of manslaughter (this is different to NZ, where the jury always has that option). Gail points out that manslaughter has a much lighter sentence. David is just angry. "I know how upsetting this is," the FLO says. "Do you? Do you really?" asks David, slamming out of the house.

Sarah goes up to the office at the builders' yard, looking for Todd - a bit like a goldfish popping into a piranha pool looking for the shark. She tells Phelan and Vinny she's coming into some money and is interested in the new flats.

Beth's gone to the salon to book a hair appointment but really to cross-examine Maria about how Kirk is. Kirk and Caz arrive back. Maria says she'll pay her share of the bill as soon as her new credit card arrives. Beth asks about Kirk's packed lunch and he points out the plastic container has the dog's ashes. Beth tells him she's glad she could be there for him. She'll always be there. Kirk just says thanks.

David storms in past everyone. Beth goes and Maria tells Kirk that Beth really does love him. She goes to see what's wrong with David. Caz, staring after her. tells Kirk that sometimes when you love someone you just have to take your time and be patient.

Tyrone tells Fiz he's still not comfortable with Roy marrying Cathy. He thinks Cathy's bulldozing him. Fiz tells him off for trying to second guess other people's relationships.

Todd and Bill come out of the cafe just as Phelan and Vinny lock up the yard. Billy's glad they've had the chat. Todd says he's just going over to collect a few things he left in the yard.

Maria and David chat. She's sympathetic to his feelings about Clayton but says it still won't change the fact that Kylie's gone. She remembers Liam know but barely thinks about Tony Gordon at all. What's important are the children. Her phone goes. It's Pablo, the man she married so he could stay in the UK.

While Cathy hopes for Christmas snow, Beth just gets weepy about Kirk. She says she's messed it all up. Cathy sits with her as she says Kirk's heartbroken and she should be his rock.

Tyrone comes in and apologises to Roy for what he said yesterday. "I was sticking me neb in and I'm sorry." Roy tells him he knows that Tyrone's worrying comes from a place of kindness.

Todd searches the office and finds a contract signed by Sarah.

Maria has to go to London and help Pablo apply for a visa extension. She asks Kirk to look after Liam. Caz says she'll jump into the shower and start getting packed. "it's ages since I went to London." Kirk looks at Maria. "Is she going with you?"

David's sweeping in front of the salon when he sees bloke run from the kebab shop and jump on a bus.

Todd's gone to see Sarah. She says she can't think of a better use for the money. After all, it's a good investment. Eileen wouldn't have put Jason's money into it unless she thought so. She can't wait to tell Bethany she's going to be a home owner.

Caz comes out of the shower and offers Maria the ring she was going to give Kate. Maria refuses and Caz goes back to pack. Maria asks Kirk to go and pick up Liam so she can talk to Caz. Kirk warns her that Caz is in love with her.

Todd's at home when Phelan comes in. Todd says he's not going to let them rip off Sarah. Phelan calls him a hypocrite, happy to rip off Rita and others but not his own friends. Todd says he's going to tell all. "You're finished, Pat - you and Vinny." He rips up the contract. He says he's not scared of Vinny. Phelan says he should be. If Vinny had had his way, Eileen would be picking out Todd's coffin about now.

The end.

Well in the battle of the soap deaths this week the shock in Emmerdale had rather more impact than the loss of Ozzie. Whilst we knew Holly Barton was only short term her failure to wake up on Thursday morning was not leaked or spoiled. Back to the days when we never knew what was going to happen next - even if the continuity announcer and the opening shots gave something away!

Over in Weatherfield meanwhile thanks to Martin for covering the extra episode (and Ozzie's departure). This is episode 9003 and was written by Damon Rochefort and directed by . Copyright remains the property of ITV to whom many thanks.

We open at the Grimshaws where Todd is dismissing Vinny's alleged reputation as Pat watching too many episodes of the Sopranos (no me neither, I thought it was a musical term). Pat assures him that Vinny is quite prepared to do what it takes when big money is involved. Pat tells him that last week Vinny wanted Todd at the bottom of the canal and he (Pat) had talked Vinny round - believe it or not! Pat says he loves Eileen and could not bear to see her bury her son. Pat makes it clear that if PC Plod get involved it will be more than Todd in danger. Apparently Vinny will go to any lengths to protect himself - he operates a scorched earth policy as dead men tell no tales. Pat asks Todd to think very carefully about his next move. Pat has to protect Eileen and Todd - and he cannot therefore scrap Sarah's contract. Todd starts thinking.

Maria is packing. Caz comes in still thinking she is going with Maria to London. Maria sits her down and asks why she thinks she is going as well - Caz responds that Maria will need her. Maria says they are mates - but nothing more. Caz says they are - Maria opened her heart to her last night. Maria says they were just talking and there is nothing more to it. And NO Maria does not feel any spark between them. She is not gay. Caz prevaricates. Maria makes it clear she is straight and nothing is going to happen. Caz runs out crying.

Erica arrives at the flower shop seeking guidance from Mary on the twins. They ignore her and have not cleared the breakfast things. Mary compares children to dogs - they need structure, rules and a strict hierarchy where Erica is top dog. Mary shows her how to issue instructions to children (and dogs). Even tone, maintain eye contact and no change of expression. Mary tells that Erica has to have faith in herself and them and it will all change. They are absolutely darling children.

David dives into the kebab shop and asks Gemma about a recent customer - mate of Macca's - about an hour ago. Leo did not want Gemma to change her statement - he works round the corner at the bike shop on Tile Street and came in as he often does for a kebab! He ate it at the counter. David shows Gemma Macca's page about Clayton looking for a manslaughter charge in place of murder. Gemma tries to calm David down. Callum was always wiggling his way out of trouble and the murdering filth is trying to do the same. Gemma is to let David know if they come in and threaten her. She shouts after David that she misses Kylie too.

At school the teacher thanks Bethany for waiting. Lauren turns up with her father who is shouting the odds and hoping Bethany will be expelled as well. Before going he threatens Bethany in front of the teacher who observes that it is clear where Lauren gets her training. Turns out that whilst suspended others came forward and reported Lauren for bullying - even some of her friends. The teacher calls Bethany a very brave young woman.

Maria is explaining that Liam will be looked after by Kirk whilst she is away. And Aidan will help out as well. Kirk is not worried about Liam - but he is worried about Caz, as is Maria - it will be odd for her to be in the flat with them. And Kirk was right about her fancying Maria, who repeats she is not gay (the lady almost doth protest too much!).

Aadi and Asha return home and find the new cool, calm and collected Erica. No discussion of tea until the table has been cleared. They promised to do it and it is important to keep promises. Erica is going to have a little nap. She tells them to wake her up when it is all shipshape and Bristol fashion and then they can talk about tea. She sits down and drops off.

In the Rovers Liz pours Gemma a drink. She has had a busy day - it would be a lovely job but for the customers! She pays using a contactless card. Liz sympathises. Gemma adds that at the end of every shift you go home and smell like sweat and chip fat. But they won't let it get them down will they? Gemma goes and Liz tries to sniff herself! Sarah walks in with a wide smile and asks if she can come back to work. Liz fetches the rota.

At the table Pat and Todd are having a chat. Sarah comes over and asks if she and Bethany can pop in and have another look at the model of the flats. Pat agrees. She wanders back to the bar and Todd is going to tell Pat what is going to happen. Todd will keep quiet and stay onside. But when all is over and done then Sarah gets her money back 50/50 from each of them. He will spin Sarah some yarn which will keep the truth intact. He tells Pat it is non-negotiable. Todd assures Pat that Sarah will believe his story. Pat agrees and they shake hands - but probably only because Pat is desperate to keep Todd onside.

After the break we are the Platts where Sarah returns to find Bethany and Gail discussing Lauren's expulsion and Bethany's bravery. Bethany still does not seem pleased by any of it. Sarah wants to know if it is now all over. Bethany starts crying - which Gail believes is a sign of relief. Bethany reckons her problems are minor compared with what David has been through and she did not to bang on about her stupid problems. Sarah tells her it is all over now because she has been so brave. And Sarah has come good news for her. She is going to buy one of the flats which Todd is selling. Thanks to Uncle Stephen buying her shares for £15k she has been able to pay the reservation fee. They are finally going to have proper little home of their own. Finally Bethany cheers up and gives Sarah a big hug.

Maria is leaving but seeing Caz crying outside decides to have another work with her. She tells Caz that she would not string her along and she also thinks it best if Caz finds somewhere else to live. Caz can hardly believe what she is hearing! And Maria hopes they can still be friends! Caz says they can. Kirk will be looking after Liam whilst she is away and it would be unfair to ask him to share as with her as well. She tells Caz that she needs to find somewhere else to live. What about Caz's parents? Apparently things are not good there. Maria tells her it is time to sort it out. Maria would like her to move on as soon as possible and she hopes it does not affect their friendship. Caz is not amused. Maria says farewell to Liam.

Pat and Vinny are leaving the yard and the former tells the latter that Todd is back onside and there will be no more trouble. How? asks Vinny. Pat told him the truth - cross Vinny and you are dead. Pat sees Billy across the Street and lets Vinny go to the meeting by himself, just a couple of old dears who will sign up. Pat is after some insurance. He asks Billy for five minutes.

Mary returns to the Alahan home. Erica is wandering around the house looking for a strange smell which no-one else can smell. Mary gets out her mirror and shows Erica that she has a smear of marmite under her nose. Aadi and Asha are of course killing themselves with laughter. Aadi admits to the joke and Erica asks them go upstairs and do their homework. They promise not to do it again. Erica catches them at the bottom of the stairs and suggests they could call a truce - which the children agree. They go and she thanks Mary for her advice. They share a glass of wine. Now they know they have boundaries and calling the truce was a nice touch says Mary. Erica agrees - which means the little rascals will not see it coming when she gets her revenge!

Kirk and Caz are back in Maria's flat. Kirk says he is not terribly good with gays and all that - it was only last Xmas he realised that Dame Edna was a bloke. Caz says she just had a daft crush on Maria. Well have you found somewhere to go asks Kirk and Caz answers by saying her phone is flat - so he allows her time to charge it. She says she will go once she has found somewhere. Kirk is off to the cinema with Liam. Caz is seething.

Billy visits Todd at the Grimshaws. Todd says he is feeling groggy from the tablets. Billy asks when Todd was going to tell him? Apparently Pat has just told Billy about the Kenyan trip - Todd wants to pay for Billy to go and work for the charity out of the profit from the flats. Todd wakes up and agrees. Billy wants to know why Todd did not tell him he was working for Pat again. Todd lies rapidly saying it was just agreed this afternoon and that he had been mad to give it up. Still messed up from the needle. Billy thanks him. Apparently Pat has offered to pay for the other half of the trip too! Todd says that surprised him as well. Billy suggests they put the last few weeks behind them and start again. Todd would like that more than anything. Billy says "No more secrets - yeah!". He adds they have to be completely honest with each other about everything. Todd agrees. They kiss. Todd looks worried.

David is getting a can of beer out, Gail thinks it is a bit early. David cannot understand buying a flat which does not exist - why not get one which is available. Sarah asks if he is trying to get rid of them - he has been since they turned up from Milan! Gail tells David she is worried about him. She knows he is feeling lost and angry., she says the kids need him. He is hiding away from the kids and the rest of the family. David asks what he should go - go line-dancing perhaps? Gail suggests grief counseling. She asks him to do it just once to put her mind at rest. He does not want to spill his guts to a stranger to make himself feel better. Gail says she is not asking - she is telling. He needs to see a counselor and it will help. For once he must do as he is told. He agrees providing she stops banging on about it. He gets the kids down for tea.

Pat returns to the Grimshaws. Todd tells him well played. Todd thought he could be manipulative. Pat just thought he could sweeten the deal so something good comes out of it all for the kids in Africa. They are looking after Jason's interests adds Pat and even Sarah's and Todd gets his boyfriend back - everyone wins! Todd knows Pat is doing it for himself. Pat says for himself and his family - Todd says he is not Pat's family. Pat replies - Todd may or may not like it but they are in this together.

Caz and Liam are playing snap. Liam wants her to come to the cinema. Caz asks if she can just stay another couple of nights at the flat. She will be gone before Maria returns. Kirk agrees. He and Liam head out. Caz pulls her phone out and asks it for the UK Home Office telephone number. She looks through the post which Kirk had brought in earlier and finds the new credit card which Maria was waiting to arrive. Caz has the credit card and the Home Office on speed dial - and a smile on her face.

Roll credits.

Caz is getting ever more devious.

Is the Bethany bullying storyline over or will there be more?

How many more twists and turns can the stories around Pat's flats take?

Next week I will be a bit late as I shall be in the colonies studying the Autumnal colours in Boston, Falmouth and up Mount Washington.

See you next week.
Richard
