3169 - Wednesday 2 January 1991
In the early hours of New Year's Day, Bet notices a light in No1. Upon investigating, she finds Ken with the pills lined up on the table. She dissuades him going on with the suicide, and he goes home. Mavis makes a somewhat inebriated New Year's resolution to not be jealous if Derek must have business dealings with his ex-wife Angelaóbut only hours later goes to pieces upon learning that Derek is to spend the next day at Victor's headquarters in Darlington, with Angela, setting up the new order. Kevin and Sally are becoming short-tempered due to lack of sleep (Rosie is a crier). Rita has been talked into accompanying Emily to an afternoon tea dance, where they see Reg Holdsworth. He has separated from his wife, he says, and is now a free agent. Emily manages to duck out to the ladies' and Rita, left without an escape, ends up dancing with Reg. Seeing Kevin and Martin in company with Curly, Mike offers to buy a round of drinks by way of congratulations to the two new fathers. But Martin snubs him, out of loyalty to Alma.

For the second night running Jenny has pretended to Mark and to Angie that she's working for the cider company, but again Steph says there's no job on. Curly recommends Kevin to Reg Holdsworth, whose car needs repair. The idea is for Kev to do the job as a "foreigner" (ie, not through the garage), but Curly stupidly gives Reg Kev's work number. Mavis learns from Victor that Derek will continue seeing Angela on business, and feels betrayed that Derek didn't tell her himself. Curly has changed his mind about Kimberley again, but she won't speak to him.

Steph learns that Jenny has a new boyfriend, one Robert Weston, but when Mark shows up at a pub where Steph and Jenny are working, and Robert is present, Jenny lets Mark believe that Steph is having an affair. Kimberley asks Reg Holdsworth to give her a transfer to another store, and Curly has to be carried home from the Rovers' after he passes out. But when Mark tells Des that he saw Steph with Robert, Des explodes in fury, and Steph makes Jenny tell Des the truth. Des, just to be sure, goes round to Kev's and asks him to tell Mark. Vera has no luck convincing Kimberley to change her mind about Curly. Mavis continues to do jealous flip-flops. So Kev is stuck with a £1,250 repair bill. Ken wants Alf to do some repairs in the flat, but Alf doesn't want to spend the brass. Curly reveals to Kimberley that he's spiked her transfer request. Then Curly tells Reg that, if he doesn't play ball, he'll tell Rita that Reg's wife has not actually left him, but in fact is merely visiting a sister in New Zealand. Alf finds out that it will cost nearly £300 to replace the boiler in the upstairs flat. Mark fires Kev for being difficult. Alma tentatively invites Ken to stay for dinner, and they both nervously back away from the potential encounter. Vera protests the "no employees" rule in the planned Bettabuy trolley race.

Kevin's in a pickle. Mark has already hired a replacement for him (named Paul), he has a job offer (at a much-reduced wage) and Mr Seymour is hounding him for the £1,250. Reg fixes the drawing for the trolley race so Rita will win, but she gives the proceeds to charity. Ken asks Alma to dinner at his flat, and she accepts. Needless to say, it's all over the street by dinner time. Curly resolves to confront Mrs Taylor, in order to tell her what he thinks of parents who stifle their daughter's social-sexual life, but when he gets to the Taylors' house, he sees Kimberley with a new boyfriend, Adrian Gosthorpe, apparently with the blessing of Mrs T.

Curly badgers Kimberley into revealing Adrian's name, and later follows her from the store. In this way, he discovers that Adrian is a junior manager at a building society. While Kevin is out on his first day at his new job, Terry Seymour stops by the house with the bill for his car repair, and tells Sally he wants it paid immediately, or he's going to court. Pursuing Ken up the stairs to insist he won't pay for repairs to the flat, Alf takes a fall on the bad tread Ken was complaining of. By acting insolently to Reg, Vera gets herself fired.

Raquel brings to Curly's attention a letter in a women's magazine's agony aunt column, which appears to be from Kimberley, describing first her relationship with Curly, and then with Adrian. As it has been the subject of much mirth in the staff room, Curly is enraged. Liz, on the other hand, is beginning to think Steph is leading Steve on. Audrey gives Alf an ultimatum to fire Ivy, but Alf thinks Ivy is the best thing that's ever happened to the shop.

The insurance adjuster, Jill Devonshire, comes to evaluate the damage at the Duckworths'.

Mavis is annoyed that Des's boat is blocking the light in her garden. Mike gives Jackie a belated engagement ring.

3235 - Wednesday 5 June 1991
The Audrey/Ivy battle rages on, but Gail deserts her mother in favour of Ivy. Liz confronts Des about what she considers to be Steph "leading Steve on". Des is stupified, but incautiously mentions it to Phyllis, who passes on the rumour to everyone she sees. And so, eventually, Steve is upset to hear it in the Corner Shop.

Kev agrees to have a look at Des's outboard motor - for a consideration. The racket of trying to run it annoys Mavis and Derek.

Mike and Jackie look at an imposing house that they both like - but Mike suggests that they make a move before their marriage.

Alf holds out against Audrey in the scrap over Ivy, but Audrey swipes the car keys and leaves him to take a taxi home.

Jack and Vera are happily wallpapering - until a letter arrives from the insurance company which says they will be paid nothing because of their fraudulent claim. Jack goes to see an agent, Mr Thomas, but gets nowhere. Steph tells Steve that she was not the source of the gossip he has been embarrassed by, and they agree they can be friends.

Audrey tells Alf that she feels he doesn't care about her at all, but when he still won't fire Ivy, she decides to leave him.

Derek buys Mavis a new sun lounger for the garden, but Des fires up the now-repaired outboard motor and his boat tips over, crushing the fence and sun lounger, narrowly missing Mavis and Derek.

Audrey is staying in a luxury hotel, which she is paying for with Alf's credit card. She phones Gail to say she's all right, but refuses to divulge her whereabouts.

Ken jokingly suggests to Derek that he claim marine salvage rights on the boat, which Des says cannot be moved for several days, because the crane necessary for the job is fully booked. When Derek presents him with a bill for £850 (including £200 compensation for "mental distress") and threatens him with the "marine salvage" ploy, Des tells him that suits him, Derek can keep the boat.

Mike is leaving to Jackie the job of making arrangements for the wedding. Don and Jim plan a weekend night-fishing trip.

3238 - Wednesday 12 June 1991
Alf has decided not to let Audrey get his goat. He phones to stop the credit card, and in general is acting very calmly. Meanwhile, Audrey is getting bored at the hotel, where the best she can seem to do for male company is a boring salesman named Dave Wallace.

Derek has Mavis put up a card in the Kabin, advertising Des's boat for sale. When Des learns of this, he storms over to the Wiltons' and another misunderstanding ensues. In a rage, Des starts painting the hull with a noxious anti-mould paint, and in retaliation, Derek takes an axe to the boat.

Jackie has ordered flowers for the wedding from Maggie Redman, unaware that she is the mother of Mike's illegitimate son. When Mike learns of this, he goes round to have a quiet word with Maggie, and catches sight of his son Mark for the first time in many years. Maggie is not pleased to see him, and tells him to stay away.

Derek is ready to turn the boat incident over to his solicitor, but while he is at work, Mavis and Des agree that it would be better if Des just quietly moved the boat to the canal. Since the necessary crane is now available, he proceeds to do just that but, unfortunately, Derek comes home early from work and, thinking Des is trying to pull a fast one, attempts to stop the move by boarding the boat, and ends up three stories up in the air, dangling from the crane.

Mike asks Phil to be Best Man at his wedding.

Alf, free to make his own plans in Audrey's absence, asks himself along on Jim and Don's fishing trip. Consequently, he is not at home when Audrey telephones in a frenzy, having been informed by the hotel's Duty Manageress that Audrey's credit card is no longer valid.

During the night-fishing expedition, Alf and Jim hear a terrific splash. When Alf goes to investigate, Don is missing from his place on the bank, and his flat cap is floating down the stream.

3240 - Monday 17 June 1991
At dawn, Jim and Alf are unable to find Don, so they drive off without him, thinking he may have caught a ride home earlier - but fearing worse. In fact, Don had dozed off and fallen into the river, but had climbed out again, only on the wrong bank.

Gail has bailed her mum out of the swank hotel, and Audrey is planning her revenge on Alf. When she tries to raid the till and cashbox at the Mini-Mart, she discovers that Alf has gotten there ahead of her. For the time being, Audrey is staying with Alma, to whom she confides that she knows where Alf keeps a sizeable amount of cash hidden in the house--and she means to take it. Mavis once again "betrays" Derek, this time by accepting a replacement sun-lounger from Des.

Don walks in his front door to find Ivy in tears, talking to the police about his disappearance. She is at first relieved to see him, and then angry for having given her such a fright.

3241 - Wednesday 19 June 1991
Alma finally twigs to the name "Alcazar Holdings" - the cafe's new landlord - but she lacks corroborating evidence. Gail says it's "just a coincidence" that Mike's November 1989 Spanish land purchase bore that name.

Audrey raids the wall safe at home, and finds that Alf has once again anticipated her move and removed the money. Alma talks her into throwing in the towel at last, but when they arrive back at the Roberts' house in a cab, they witness Mrs Barford just leaving, and Alf is in his bathrobe.

Derek is losing his battle of wills with Des, who has now replaced the smashed fence but still refuses to pay compensation for distress. And the news of Derek's adventure with the crane is all over the Street, where he is being called the "Bird-Man of Weatherfield". Don taunts him with: "Have you recovered from your flight?" To which Derek responds, "Have you recovered from your swim?" And somewhere along the line we learn that Derek's school nickname was "Willers".

3242 - Friday 21 June 1991
Alma phones the realty brokers pretending to be Mike Baldwin's secretary, and gets the confirmation she needs: Alcazar=Mike.

Audrey makes a second attempt at returning home, but now Alf has changed the locks. She declares that this is the last straw--she'll get her half in the divorce settlement.

Derek at last throws in the towel and (to mix a metaphor) buries the hatchet with Des.

Deirdre is finding it frustrating to work for a boss who can never be found, and presses Phil for a place where he can be reached. He says "Travers Street", but later she learns from Dean Lockwood, one of Phil's other employees, that the Travers Street Arcade has been closed.

3243 - Monday 24 June 1991
Alf decides it's time to go see Audrey, expecting her to fall to her knees and beg his forgiveness. When he learns from Gail that this is far from the case, he decides he'd better give her a little longer "to come to her senses". But, as she tells Gail, "D'you know, he's like one o' them dinosaurs: body like a bus, brain like a bean." And so she phones Canada to try to reestablish contact with the now-widowed adoptive father of her out-of-wedlock son, Stephen.

Ivy has had enough of being in the middle of the feud between Alf and Audrey, and is considering jumping ship at the Corner Shop to seek a job at Bettabuys. Emily has booked a holiday trip, emphatically without Percy, but is finding it difficult to confront him with the fact. No problem: Phyllis does it for her. Gail asks Mike to come and tell Alma why "Alcazar Holdings" bought the cafe. He does so, but Alma holds the high ground, concluding that even he himself doesn't know whether he's marrying Jackie for her money.

3244 - Wednesday 26 June 1991
Vera is trying to get Ivy a job at Bettabuys, but as usual is making trouble for everybody. Alf, ignorant of all this, nevertheless offers Ivy an early rise in salary. Reg corners Ivy in the Rovers at lunchtime, and offers her a job at Bettabuys, but offends her by badmouthing Alf.

Percy begins to imagine that Emily has planned her holiday without him because she is planning to meet someone else.

Audrey finally succeeds in reaching Malcolm, her son Stephen's foster father in Canada. Malcolm had made a serious pass at her four-and-a-half years ago, and Audrey thinks to rekindle the flame, but she is disappointed to learn he is remarrying in a month's time.

Business is turning sour at Ingram's.

Audrey goes to the Job Centre (via the taxi office, where she insults Don), only to discover that all she's qualified to do is to wait on customers in a corner shop. (This is extremely odd, since she is a qualified hairdresser, but it would be inconvenient to the script to bring this fact up.)

Reg pops into the Corner Shop while Alf is out, in order to test Ivy's speed at checkout, but is caught by Alf and sent packing.

Because of the slump in business, Jackie and Mike are cutting expenses on their wedding.

Phyllis is driving Percy crazy with innuendoes about Emily's one day at the seaside.

Deirdre wants to buy something special to wear to Mike's wedding, but can't get Phil to cough up a wage packet--though he offers the use of his credit card.
