1963

January
Jed Stone opens a market stall and takes on Sheila Birtles as his assistant. Her parents are shocked and order her to give it up. Gamma Garments supremo Spiros Papagopolous launches a cost-cutting drive and orders Leonard Swindley to sack Miss Nugent. Swindley pleads for her reinstatement and is told she can be kept on - if business improves.

February
Frank Barlow's affair with Christine Appleby causes gossip in the Street - and friction between Ken and Frank. As the Rovers buzzes about the romance, Albert tells everyone about his war service at the Somme in 1916.

March
Christine and Frank announce their engagement. Rents in Coronation Street, Mawdesley Street and Viaduct Street are raised on Elsie Tanner's birthday. Late at night Jed Stone packs his bags and leaves the Street under a veil of secrecy. Ena Sharples' sister, Alice Raybould, dies aged eighty, leaving Ena £100. After paying for the funeral, Ena is £50 out of pocket.

April
Christine tearfully breaks off her engagement to Frank - the age difference is just too great. Elsie is issued with an eviction order for refusing to pay the rent increase. When bailiffs put her furniture out on the pavement, Elsie agrees to pay - but only when they have carried her furniture inside again. On the same day Dennis Tanner returns home to take charge of the Lenny Phillips Theatrical Agency.

May
Frank Barlow resigns from the GPO and decides to go into business on his own. He opens a DIY shop at 152 Victoria Street. Romance blossoms as Elsie has her first date with Len Fairclough - they go to a dance at the Orinoco Club.

June
The Street is invited round to the grand opening of Frank's new shop. Harry Hewitt agrees to move to Ireland and hands in his notice. On the last minute he changes his mind because he cannot bring himself to leave Lucille.

July
Leonard Swindley is transferred to Gamma Garments head office, and romeo Neil Crossley takes over as relief manager of the shop.

August
Lanky window cleaner Walter Potts is 'discovered' by Dennis Tanner who becomes his manager and launches him on a pop-singing career as Brett Falcon. Albert Tatlock gets drunk with Alf Roberts on the Rovers darts team outing. A patrolling policeman finds Albert clinging to a lamp-post and, after a shouting match, charges them with assaulting an officer.

September
Sheila Birtes attempts suicide with an Aspirin overdose in the wake of an affair with Gamma's relief manager Neil Crossley. Dennis Tanner, in a rare display of public-spiritedness, saves her by climbing a ladder to her flat window.

October
Sheila leaves her flat above the Corner Shop and returns home, and her friend Doreen Lostock joins the WRAC. Ena returns home to find the Vestry vandalized. Walter Potts makes a shaky debut as Brett Falcon at Weatherfield Trades and Labour Club, but goes down well. Joiner Jerry Booth marries Myra Dickinson. There is almost a double celebration when Elsie Tanner's decree absolute comes through and Len proposes - but she turns him down.

November
Elsie, enjoying her freedom, launches into an affair with Orinoco Club owner Laurie Frazer. Ena collapses - the doctor diagnoses arterio-sclerosis - and she moves back in with Minnie Caldwell. Meanwhile, the Vestry vandal is caught - youngster Michael Butterworth who had been to juvenile court for stealing Ena's pension book.

December
Walter Potts polishes up his stage act and becomes a successful pop singer. Dennis Tanner springs a This Is Your Life on a shocked Annie Walker. The mystery guest is Mr Forsythe-Jones, who sings a duet with her.
