1965

January
Ena is left Nº11 in a will. She studies the Rent Act and to Elsie's anger raises the rent. When Elsie objects, she is given notice to quit. The Mission, which has been threatened with demolition, is reprieved, and Ena sells the deeds to Nº11 to local landlord Edward Wormold for £350.

Leonard Swindley is promoted to Gamma Garments' head office. Jerry Booth returns to the street to work for Len after leaving his wife Myra and lodges with Florrie Lindley.

February
Stan's waste paper enterprise collapses through lack of customers. Hilda winds it up and he starts as a milk roundsman. Piggott is remanded on £100 bail for bribery. Ena lends Charlie Moffitt £50 to set up as an insurance agent. Florrie Lindley's engineer husband Norman returns and immediately has a brief fling with Elsie.

March
Emily Nugent takes on Elsie as a sales assistant at Gamma Garments. Emily buys a Morris Minor and Mr Swindley returns to give her driving lessons. She is arrested and charged with driving the wrong way up a one-way street. Swindley's licence is found to have expired and they end up in the dock together. He is fined £25, Miss Nugent £5.

April
Val Barlow gives birth to twins - Susan and Peter. David Barlow is cleared on the soccer bribery charges, but decides to quit league football. Willy Piggott is less fortunate - he is fined £150 for the exam bribery attempt.

Piggott has financed a building development in Blackburn on which Len loses £1,000. Jerry takes over the job and walks out on Len.

May
A relieved Miss Nugent passes her driving test. Norman and Florrie Lindley emigrate to Canada, and Lionel Petty takes over the Corner Shop. David Barlow signs a two-year contract as player-coach for Weatherfield Athletic. Ena's great-nephew arrives on holiday from Nebreska.

June
Lionel Petty's daughter Sandra serves in the Corner Shop and falls for her first customer, Dennis Tanner. David Barlow and Irma Ogden become engaged on a day trip to the Blue John Mines at Speedwell. Ena accepts an invitation to visit Nebraska and flies out from Ringway.

July
Elsie is sacked by Miss Nugent in a Gamma staff economy drive, and takes a job at the local laundrette the Laundryer. Clara Midgeley appears in the Street as Ena's relief help at the Mission. Stan Ogden and Charlie Moftitt brew their own beer at Minnie's. As Miss Nugent and Minnie get quietly drunk, the bottles explode.

August
Jerry Booth's building venture collapses and he returns cap in hand to Len, who offers him a partnership. Dennis Tanner and Sandra Petty look as though they are falling in love.

Lucille Hewitt's exam results come through - four O-levels, including science and geography. Her old home, Nº7, which has been empty since the Hewitts left, collapses and has to be demolished by Len and Jerry.

September
Ena returns from holiday in Nebraska. Elsie, visiting the Fox and Hounds pub, in Cheshire, is picked up by tweedy Robert Maxwell. On the way home he collapses and dies behind the wheel of his Jaguar. Elsie flees in panic and catches a bus home. An inquest returns a verdict of death from natural causes, but a bitter Mrs Maxwell blames Elsie.

October
Jerry moves in to lodge with Len. Lucille quits her job at Mitchell's Mail Order to work in the research and development department at Marshall's Cotton Mill. The Street's lady residents take part in a charity mannequin parade at the Mission, organized by Miss Nugent.

November
Annie Walker's dreams are fulfilled when she is made chairman of the Lady Victuallers, and presented with a chain of office. Dennis Tanner has a telephone installed at Nº11, and Elsie has a whirlwind affair with telephone engineer Jim Mount.

December
David Barlow and Irma Ogden slip away for a secret Register Office wedding, but the news is leaked by a talkative taxi-driver. The Street turn up to surprise them at a reception at the Greenvale Hotel.

Lucille, under age, is caught serving behind the bar of the Rovers by Jack Turner. Jerry Booth beats up Turner when he hears that Jack Walker is being blackmailed over the incident. David Barlow receives a leg injury in a charity soccer match, and learns that he will never play again. The club ends his contract and gives him £300 compensation.
