1981

January
Gail secretly changes her baby's name from David Daniel to Nicholas Paul, to prevent his initials hecoming DDT. Frankie Baldwin appears and repays Fred's money, but reveals that the Vice Squad are after him. The cheque bounces. Ken buys a Volkswagen Beetle, but Albert refuses to ride in a 'Jerry car'.

Ken and Deirdre rekindle their friendship, but she stands Ken up when a Dutch friend of Ray's arrives with a present for Tracy. Eddie and his mates enter the 'Cleanest Dustcart Competition'.

February
Ken and Deirdre make up, but Mike Baldwin steps in to ask her on a date. Fred Gee tosses pie crusts onto the dustcart roof attracting a flock of pigeons. Eddie and Co. wash off the dirt in time to tie for first prize.

Annie departs on a cruise, bringing in relief manager Gordon Lewis, a tough disciplinarian. He suspends Fred for drinking free Scotch, and accuses Betty of short-changing. Elsie makes a play for rugged trucker Wally Randle who eats at the cafe.

March
Ken takes beautician Sonia Price to Mike Baldwin's flat-warming party. Mike whisks her to a night-club, leaving Ken with Deirdre. Annie returns to find her staff gone and new barmaids installed. She restores everything to normal and sends an unflattering report on Lewis to the brewery.

Arnold Swain returns to terrorize Emily and is admitted to a mental home. Emily holidays in Malta with Mavis to recuperate. Annie invites Fred's presentable new ladyfriend Eunice Nuttall to supper, and dampens Fred's ardour by sending her home in a taxi. Hilda packs her washing for the laundrette in a bin liner, and the dustmen take it to the tip.

April
Fred, promised his own pub when he marries, proposes to Eunice, and she accepts. Annie offers them a room at the Rovers for £10 a week. Ken has plans to marry Deirdre, but Brian and Gail's marriage hits a rocky patch. Elsie takes to the gin when Wally Randle rejects her advances. She realizes she is getting old. Elsie picks up roughneck Bill Fielding and takes him home for the night. When she goes to work, disgusted with herself, his jealous wife breaks in and slashes all Elsie's clothes.

May
Jack Duckworth turns Vera out because she has a boyfriend, Harry. Bert Tilsley begs him to take her back, but Jack is happier on his own. Vera returns after a bout of conscience. Fred and Eunice marry at Weatherfield Register Office. Albert, who expects to move in with Ken and Deirdre when they marry, is told they are thinking of moving away. When he is alone he quietly weeps. Colin Jackson, a friend of Gail and Brian, makes advances to Gail when Brian is out. She kicks him out, and Brian breaks off the friendship.

June
Fred is turned down for his own pub - Eunice was sacked for stealing when she was a barmaid. Broody Rita wants to adopt a child. Len will not consider it, but they agree to foster. Ken and Deirdre book the wedding and ask a delighted Albert if they can move in with him. Emily and Mavis plan to go to London for the Royal Wedding.

July
Annie orders Fred and Eunice to leave, but relents when his replacement cannot take the job. Ken and Deirdre are married at All Saints Church and honeymoon in Corfu. Decorator Marcus Dodds starts work on the Rovers. He turns out to be an amateur artist, and persuades Mavis to pose nude for him. They both have second thoughts and call it off. Elsie is offered a machinist's joh at the factory. Len and Rita, overjoved, hear they have heen selected to foster a thirteen-year-old.

August
Fred and Eunice move out of the Rovers into her father's flat. Len and Rita foster likeable John Spencer while his mother is in hospital. Brian has an affair with flirtatious garage customer Glenda Fox, and an angry Gail gives him a warning. Jack and Vera Duckworth celebrate their twenty-fourth wedding anniversary. Tracy gets chicken pox, and a worried Alhert moves in with Emily in case he catches it.

September
Albert is banned from the Ogden's as a domino-sharp', after beating them two nights in succession. Fred and Eunice move into the Community Centre as caretakers. Bet Lynch organizes the brewery's 'Mr and Mrs' competition, but Annie wonders if any Street marriages will stand up to it. Gail and Brian's victory is drowned in a row between all the other couples. Hilda gets a job cleaning Mike Baldwin's luxury flat. Mike's father Frankie is back, in the money, with a dazzling secretary on his arm. Brian Tilsley, working at a filling station, tackles a boy trying to rob the till, and puts him on the hospital critical list.

October
Brian is arrested for unlawful wounding. Gail's mother Audrey, gives shampoo and sets in the back of the Corner Shop while Alf is away. Alf, completely smitten, turns a blind eye, and starts gossip by painting out Renee's name on the shop sign. Mike Baldwin, left with orders on his hands when a customer goes bankrupt, opens a market stall to clear the stock.

November
Vera deserts Ida and Ivy on the stall to help a rival stallholder who fancies her. Brian is cleared in court of the assault charge. Audrey Potter talks a besotted Alf into buying her a car. When he proposes she backs away quickly and goes back to her old boyfriend. Fred Gee is asked to leave the Centre because he is rude to the public.

December
The councillor who sacks Fred, offers them jobs at his private hotel. Eunice accepts, but Fred refuses and goes back to the Rovers. Their marriage appears to be over. Emily receives news that Arnold Swain has died and left her £2,000. Annie, in her endless quest for sophistication, launches a Cocktail Hour at the Rovers.
