Ron Sykes, Brian's boss, is transferring the firm to the Persian Gulf, and Brian takes up his offer to work in Qatar. Annie is invited to the brewery's Bicentenary Ball. When her escort falls ill at the last minute, she is obliged to ask Fred. Betty is visited by her son Gordon and his fiancee Caroline Watson.

February
Annie counts the cost of Fred's drunken behaviour: a Space Invaders game and a new Rover are delivered - both ordered under the influence at the ball - followed by a barmaid who was promised a job. Stan forgets Hilda's birthday, despite her giving him the money to buy chocolates.

Ken tells Deirdre he does not want any more children. Eddie gets a CB radio and dates Stardust Lil, alias Marion Willis. He borrows the keys to Mike Baldwin's luxury flat from the Ogdens and entertains her. Gail makes friends with her new neighbour Jackie Moffatt, who takes her on a night out while Brian is away.

March
The Faircloughs foster sixteen-year-old Sharon Gaskell, who turns out to be keen on soccer and good at woodwork. Fred Gee falls down the cellar steps, and considers suing Annie. She tells him that if his claim succeeds he will have to look for a lighter job, and Fred is soon back at work.

Gail rings Brian and finds that he is spending his leave in Cairo instead of Weatherfield. She decides to go out on the town. Betty Turpin's old lodger, travelling electrician Alec Hobson, moves back in with her.

April
Bored Gail gets her old job back at the cafe, while neighbour Jackie baby-sits for her. Mavis' old flame Derek Wilton turns up with flowers. Mavis melts a little when he mentions a summer cruise, but sends him packing when he reveals he is taking his sister, not her.

Marion - Stardust Lil - wants to keep her past secret, and Eddie has difficulty expressing his feelings for her. Jack Duckworth fancies Bet and takes her to the Huntsman, where they narrowly miss bumping into Vera with her boyfriend. Vera finds out and dumps Jack's clothes at the Rovers

May
Eddie tells Marion about his prison record and clumsily proposes. She accepts and they have a rowdy engagement party at the Rovers. Mike Baldwin discovers that his wages clerk has inadvertently given everyone a rise. He fires her and takes on Emily, who upsets the girls by deducting it from their wages.

Betty Turpin is mugged by a youngster from Ken's youth club. Deirdre quietly tips off the police, who thank her in front of Ken. Hilda wants a new three-piece suite, but the HP company turns her down as a bad credit risk. Binman Eddie is paid a fiver to dispose of an old suite, which he sells to Hilda as a 'modern antique'.

June
Ken surprises Deirdre by suggesting they start a family of their own. Len and Rita take in Sharon for long-term fostering. Cleopatra, the factory cat, knocks coffee over the wage ledgers, and ruins Mike Baldwin's £50 sports-coat. He takes it to the RSPCA, but the girls retrieve it and make it a member of the union. Enthusiasm wanes when Mike includes the cat in the bonus share-out. There is panic when toddler Nicky Tilsley disappears. A big search of the Street finds him locked in Len's new house.

July
Elsie goes dway and Eddie plans to spend the night with Marion. He tells Hilda that Elsie is ill in bed, and has to hide in the back yard when she calls to visit her. Mike Baldwin is comforted hy his girlfriend Maggie Dunlop when his father dies. Their feelings grow, and he invites her to move in with him. Hilda, who cleans the flat, is shocked, so Mike gives her a £1 rise.

August
Mavis' budgie Harry surprises her by laying an egg. She changes its name to Harriet, and warms the egg in her bra to see if it will hatch. Annie finds a lady's lighter in her Rover. Fred lent the car to a bookie to pay off gambling debts, and his wife asks worried Fred for her lighter back.

Hilda gets a cleaning job for a Dr and Mrs Lowther and regales the Rovers with stories of their luxurious lifestyle.
