1990

January
Deirdre chucked out Ken on New Years Eve and he's now living with Wendy Crozier. The neighbours are talking and Tracy is taking it hard. Ken sells the Weatherfield Recorder so that he can buy Deirdre out for her half of the house and newspaper. Don's taxi got stolen and was used in a hit and run accident. Don stands accused because he lied about being in a betting shop when it was nicked. He isn't charged for the hit and run, but he is charged for assault on the lad that did steal the car.

Alec finds his long lost daughter Sandra and she is less than pleased after all these years of silence but Alec doesn't see her reluctance and has high hopes of happy families until Sandra puts him straight. Alec frets dreadfully about the rejection so Bet has a word with Sandra who finally takes a step back to her father and they begin to forge a tentative relationship.

Jenny blames Rita for her father Alan Bradley's death by tram in Blackpool. Derek is left high, dry and jobless after being laid off. Alma's back dating Mike. Tina and Eddie go to France. Sally and Kevin babysit his little son Jamie but the trip turns out a bust when Eddie gets arrested. The MacDonald's begin the transition from military to civilian life but Alf has trouble with the twin sons Steve and Andy MacDonald who have twice broken the shop window.

February
Mike starts a small factory business making sport bags for Peter Ingram using his flat, then outworkers, then Alma's flat over the café. Rita and Jenny make up their differences. Rita buys a new unit and flat on the Street and reopens the Kabin there, making plans to move into the new flat. Victor Pendlebury has turned up again in Mavis' life and Derek's jealousy flares. Derek reluctantly accepts a job offer to work for Victor in the recycling industry but Victor finds plenty of ways to divert Derek and spend time with his former lady love.

Jim nearly decides to return to army life but Liz with the help of his old friend (and her ex-lover) Johnny persuade him to stay with civilian life. Audrey and Alf finally move into a nice house on Grasmere drive. The very volatile Steph and Des Barnes move into No6. Eddie's former girlfriend Marie turns up and wants baby Jamie back.

March
Deirdre and Ken engage in some very public arguing over Tracy seeing Ken with Wendy around. Tracy tries manipulating the two of them hoping for a reconciliation. Ken is not happy when his promised position at the Weatherfield Gazette turns out to be less than he expected with Wendy taking on more responsibility than him. He resigns from the paper when his boss calls his bluff.

Eddie proposes to Tina in order to keep custody of Jamie but jilts her during her hen night to marry Marie instead. Mike is hired by Peter Ingram as a sales rep. Jenny and her friend Flick move into No7 when Rita moves into the new flat.

Mavis and Derek move into No4. Steph flirts shamelessly with Kevin as a joint practical joke that she and Des launch. It culminates at a party when Steph gets Kevin drunk and shaves his moustache off! Sally is not happy as she suspects Steph and Kevin are having an affair. Mavis is bereft at the death of her beloved budgie. Alf and Audrey Roberts finally move from the shop flat to Grasmere Drive

April
Alf is more than pleased to have is old friend Rita so near in her new shop but Audrey get jealous of his attentions to Rita. Percy has an accident at the crossing but can't get compensation because he lied about his age on his application and gets the sack. Sally forgives Kevin for the Steph incident but manages to get her revenge on Steph by implying that Des made a pass at her. Tracy is careless with the chip pan, causing a fire on the stove. Deirdre hires builder Dave Barton to make repairs. Deirdre starts dating Dave on a friendly basis. Sally tells Kevin she's pregnant and guess what? So is Gail! But Gail makes secret plans to get an abortion. Kevin finds out and tells Martin who stops Gail at the train station and after Martin convinces Gail he is committed, she reluctantly decides to have the baby after all.

Unemployment and guilt over what he's done takes the shine off Ken's relationship with Wendy. Jack trades the old factory time clock for a banged up old motorbike. Vera is not pleased with greasy parts all over her house and back yard. Jack ends up selling the bike to Jim MacDonald much to Liz's annoyance. Curly buys Ken's car not realizing it needs a great deal of repair work. Ken insists that Curly bought the old car "as is".

May
Ken finally admits he made a mistake and should never have left Deirdre and he leaves Wendy. Tracy starts pushing for a reconciliation by scheming and lying but it doesn't work. Deirdre does not want Ken back. Jack gets to ride the bike that he sold to Jim who has rebuilt it but Jack gets arrested for driving an unregistered vehicle without proper insurance causing upset between the Duckworths and the MacDonalds. Jim ends up selling the bike to a constable.

Ivy goes barmy at the idea of Gail having a baby. Audrey isn't exactly thrilled but defends Gail against Ivy's rantings. Gail decides to have an abortion, but Martin races against the train and finally persuades her to keep the baby. Reg camps out in Bettabuys' storeroom after his wife kicks him out and ends up renting the upstairs shop flat from Alf. Flick and Jenny squabble over an unwanted creepy friend that Flick lets kip on the sofa. Mavis and Derek begin planning their garden. Derek becomes more enthusiastic when Steph starts wearing skimpy clothes around her house.

Nigel Ridley starts plans to change the Rovers into an American Style bar called Yankees, offering Deirdre £35,000 for No1, so the pub can be extended. Alec is keen but Bet is not. Most of the residents oppose the plan as well. Alec backs down when he realizes how upset Bet is and they turn down Newton & Ridley's offer.

June
Mark tries to date Flick but she isn't interested. Ivy swallows her pride and takes a job at Ingrams working for Mike again. Kim and Curly are still dating. After spending an innocent night at the Duckworths, Kimberly's parents attack Curly for ruining their daughter's innocence and Curly finds himself pressured into an engagement! Vera and Jack go on a second honeymoon but she returns without him after a row over a flirtation she had with a lounge singer named Lester Fontaine. The row continues when Jack returns home.

Ken takes a bedsit room and starts teaching at Weatherfield Comprehensive, much to Tracy's embarrassment. Ken reveals, in the pub, that Nigel Ridley has no intention of stopping plans to change the Rovers into Yankees when he discovers that Deirdre has accepted Newton & Ridley's offer to buy her house. Deirdre is ostracized by the community and the Gilroys find out that they will be banished to a clapped out old pub, so in protest they shut the pub and go on strike. Things come down to the wire with the brewery banging on the door but the pub is saved by old Mr Newton who comes out of retirement to stop the plans. The Rovers will always stay a working man's pub and that's that! That leaves the residents celebrating and Deirdre with a lot of making up to do.

July
Jack and Vera make up but Curly now seems railroaded into moving in with the Taylors. He backs out, causing Kim to doubt his commitment to her but he makes it up. He tries to get her to go on holiday to Greece with him but finds himself included in the Taylor family holiday plans to a Barmouth caravan park instead! Curly gets promoted which will mean spending only weekends at home which upsets Vera and Kim both. But Reg, when faced with a new computer system, manages to get the promotion cancelled. Curly nearly looses everything in protest but swallows his pride and escapes the holiday along with it by scheduling himself on a computer course.

After some rumours are started, the health inspector gives the café a warning and a clean bill of health. But Gail falls while she and Alma are cleaning and nearly loses the baby so Martin takes over in the café for the duration of the pregnancy so Gail can rest. Bettabuys starts up a free bus service which gives Alf more grief. Alf retaliates by evicting Reg from the shop flat. Alec makes a new leaving Vicky £20,000 causing much upset with Bet. He settles it by taking out an additional life insurance policy for the same amount. Flick's sister Joanne shows up. Her teenage attitude causes conflicts with Flick. Steve and Andy fight over Joanne who chooses Steve over Andy. Faced with Joanne's departure back to Canterbury, the young couple run away on a motorbike Jim has repaired to the Lake District. But money troubles and reality soon cause Joanne to come back home on her own. Liz manages to convince Steve to come home and an uneasy peace is settled.

August
Audrey and Alf buy Martin and Gail a used car. Jenny and Flick go to France. Andy decides he wants to quit school and join the army. Jim tries the reverse psychology of support in hopes he'll give up the idea. Liz tries guilt. Liz wins and Andy goes back to school. Ken moves into the corner shop flat and tries to cause trouble between Dave and Deirdre in his quest to try to get her back. A feud between the Duckworth's and the Barnes' flares up because of a misunderstanding over what Jack thinks are insider tips from Des over sure bets. The Wilton's get drawn in when Vera breaks their window by mistake. Stakes get raised with one vindictive prank after the other but it finally peters out.

Mike gets into trouble with Peter Ingram by trying to start up a competitive business on the side. He doesn't get the sack but after a late night argument, Peter drops dead of a heart attack. Alec plays tyrant with Tina hoping to keep her from getting a big head over being named Barmaid of the Month. She soon starts taking advantage after starting a relationship with a new boyfriend, Nigel Ridley! Tina pushes Alec with her arrogance but ends up losing her job and Nigel.

September
Audrey's bedroom telly is on the blink and Jim MacDonald is the repairman! Audrey entertains herself by flirting outrageously and relentlessly with Jim, much to his discomfort. Jim embarrasses and insults Audrey by making it clear he's not interested. After replaced and costly aerials, arguments over costs and broken tellies, Jim finally loses his temper and quits. It takes a few weeks before the hard feelings between the Roberts and the MacDonalds wear off. Jim decides to open a motorbike repair shop under the arch of the viaduct. Mike does some fancy footwork, emotionally maneuvering Widow Jackie into keeping the factory after tricking Jackie into thinking she couldn't get a decent offer for Ingrams. The current manager, Dobson, retires in disgust and Mike gets himself put in charge!

Deirdre's bitterness and obsession over Ken causes problems with her and Dave. She even tries to file for divorce as a way to get Ken to back off. Her unwillingness to commit to Dave causes them to break up. Ken is infuriated over the divorce but persists in trying to persuade Deirdre to have him back. Deirdre meets businessman Phil Jennings through Mike. Mavis finds a lost budgie and she and Derek hide it because they don't want to give it back to it's unsuitable owners. Derek buys a bird to take to the owners but Mavis takes back "Harry" as well. Harry is returned by the owner who believes she's already got her "Boris" back! Mavis is angry at Derek's actions at first but then softens. Harry now lives with the Wiltons, to their delight! Vera goes to a psychic for a lark but Ivy gets involved because she begins to believe she will be able to speak to Bert and Brian in the other world. She causes trouble with her messages from the other side which drag up many painful memories to several residents, Bet and Emily, much to Don's frustration and dismay at her interference. Even her priest can't shake her latest obsession but she stops, because she believes she's had a message telling her to do so... from her dead husband Bert! Liz MacDonald is hired as the new Rovers barmaid to take up the slack now that Tina's gone.

October
Mike's involvement with Jackie and the factory leaves Alma suspicious. He's made himself indispensable at the factory, deliberately charming into falling in love with him in his quest to get his hands on the factory properly. Deirdre starts a crusade to get the schoolkids away from the amusement arcades which brings her in regular contact with Phil Jennings who owns a chain of them. He wines and dines her in the interest of business. Jenny returns from the continent alone but Angie Freeman moves in to No7 shortly after. Jenny hasn't done too well at her classes and quits college. She gets part time work with Steph at the department store perfume counter.

Mark's father gives him the garage for his 21st birthday. Since Mark is now a man of property, Jenny decides she's interested in him and pursues him into a relationship. Kevin isn't so pleased that his apprentice is now his boss. They clash over it, Kevin cannot accept that Mark is his boss even though Mark wants to keep their working relationship the way it always was. Bet and Alec have to cancel a trip to Madeira due to an ear infection Alec contracts. He sells their tickets to Mavis and Derek but the company goes bust and the Wiltons are left stranded in the airport for three days trying to sort things out. They come home to find their house broken into because Percy was too keen with his guard duties. The burglars knew exactly when he was there and when he wouldn't be!

November
To make matters even worse, Alec refuses to refund the £800 (plus £200 pain and suffering) that Derek paid him for the dodgy holiday vouchers. Mavis feels her home has been violated by the burglars and moves in with Rita. Alec finally pays Derek back £500 but only because he has made a claim on his credit card for a refund of £1200! Mavis finally gathers the courage to return home to Rita's relief. Percy vows to find the burglars in order to clear his name. For once, his vigilance pays off and he is the hero of the day when he catches the burglars in the process of robbing Des's house!

Ken continues to interfere with Deirdre's budding relationship with Phil Jennings but isn't successful in breaking them up. In fact Phil fights back with a few veiled threats from a rough looking friend!. Deirdre's trip to London with Phil gets cancelled so she goes on her own anyway. Ken's jealousy knows no bounds when he doesn't get the message that she will be back later than expected. Mike continues to get closer to Jackie, by lying to both she and Alma about the true nature of his relationship with the other. Jackie is now under Mike's spell. Marie Ramsden turns up in Don's cab with a sick baby, no money and Eddie off in prison. Don takes pity on her and helps her out with groceries and money. Sally goes on maternity leave and Alf insists Audrey take up the slack in the shop. Jenny takes a lot of flack for dating Mark just because he has a business but she manages to get round Mark's suspicions

December
Jenny and Steph work part time at night flogging apple cider in tight costumes which causes Des to be very jealous. They row and split but reunite. Steph tries to quit the job but gets promoted instead. Victor Pendlebury introduces his new wife to Mavis and Derek. His new wife, Yvonne, is as near a clone of Mavis as anyone could get but Mavis is angry at this insinuation. Curly tries to make arrangements for he and Kim to spend Christmas in a hotel. But the deceit is revealed and Kimberly's parents call off the engagement! Derek is sent back on the road selling recycled paper products for Victor. Sally has Rosie in Don's cab with Liz's help on Christmas Eve and Gail gives birth to David in the wee hours of Boxing Day! Jack buys Vera a big black dog for Christmas but it terrorizes them by cornering them in the upstairs bedroom and eats their Christmas meal!

Mike and Jackie are seen kissing at the office Christmas party by Ivy. Mike covers he keeps playing both ends against the middle, juggling two relationships. Alma is devastated when Mike leaves her just before Christmas and moves in with Jackie. Don spends the month clucking over Marie and when Ivy finds out, he manages to have her invite Marie to stay for Christmas. Marie however takes full advantage and the visit only lasts a day or two. Marie leaves for good. Deirdre and Phil go to Paris for New Year's. Ken becomes depressed in his defeat and nearly takes an overdose of pills in No1. Bet sticks her nose in and lends a shoulder which he gratefully accepts.
