July 1999

4639 - Friday 2 July
The atmosphere is still strained at the Battersbys' despite Janice's denial that anything took place with Owen. Janice meets up with Owen at the café - he apologises for his behaviour. She tells him they have no future, but he will not hear her words. He is insistent, so she plays cruel to be kind and tells him she has no feelings for him. Les tells Janice that he forgives her and that he appreciates her.

Leanne is a bit miffed that her 18th birthday has been forgotten by Janice and Les. Vikram isn't thrilled at the prospect of meeting up with Leanne's dad. The party isn't lively enough for Leanne. Les joins the party at the Rovers. He puts his foot in it when he tells Betty that they are celebrating Leanne's 18th birthday. Betty wonders what Natalie will think. Ashley hands Leanne some post which arrived from Nick in Canada - it is a request for a divorce.

Kevin and Alison are moving into their flat at the weekend, so they cannot look after the girls.

Ashley and Maxine decide to save moving in together until they are married, until Fred tells them that he is going to sell the house in which Ashley is living. Maxine is upset at Fred having a go at her all the time. Maxine and Ashley go round to meet Maxine's parents - the meeting is successful and Ashley is a big hit. Maud warns Fred that he will drive a wedge between him and Ashley if he persists. Maxine's parents say they think more of him than some of her previous boyfriends, apparently one moved another woman into the house and the other girls was pregnant, it was probably his child.

Linda continues being cheeky to Deirdre. After work has finished, Mike tells Linda to back off a bit. Hayley comes back for something she has forgotten to find Mike and Linda embracing.

4640 - Sunday 4 July
Roy wonders if Hayley is sure that she saw Mike and Linda embracing - Hayley is positive. Roy feels Hayley should respect that it is Mike's private life. Hayley doesn,t want to let down Alma. Roy fears Hayley might lose her job. Linda comes in to tackle Hayley - she wonders whether she will take her revenge but Hayley insists this is not what she wants. She asks that Hayley keeps the facts to herself. Hayley decides not to upset Alma any more.

Kevin and Alison are moving their belongings into the flat, but have no cutlery or cooking utensils. Kevin says that some of the stuff at Sally's belongs to him. When he goes round, the girls try to persuade him to stay for tea. The only way he can get out, is by inviting them to tea tomorrow night.

Audrey tells Alma that Ravi is pursuing her. Alma thinks that if Ravi is after anyone, then is it Audrey.

Gail is relieved that Nick has asked Leanne for a divorce. Audrey sees the benefits, them all being free of the Battersbys, but wonders why Nick is in a rush - usually the reason for quickie divorces is the wish to remarry, but Gail doesn,t see that. Leanne calls Nick in Canada to clear the air, but is irritated by his attitude. She resents him still manipulating her and resolves to decide for herself and not to be intimidated by Nick.

Ashley apologises to Janice and Les about giving Nick's letter to Leanne on her birthday. Janice doesn,t see it as Ashley's fault, Les does - in the olden days, they used to shoot the messenger. Ashley is unnerved at the break up of Nick and Leanne's marriage and wonders whether he and Maxine will survive - Maxine reassures him. Fred tells Ashley he would love to see him wed, but he could do better than Maxine. Janice goes round to see whether Ashley knows anymore - when his mum, Beryl, comes round she initially mistakes Janice for Maxine, much to Janice's amusement. But Fred meets Beryl on the doorstep to Ashley's and warns her that he doesn,t approve of Maxine. After the meeting, Maxine is distraught and feels that Beryl hates her and wonders whether their relationship can survive, it might be better to call the whole thing off.

4641 - Monday 5 July
Maxine is still hurt at Beryl's reaction and wonders what she has against her. Privately she arranges to meet Beryl and finds out that Fred poisoned the atmosphere for her. Maxine admits she has made mistakes but Ashley is the only one who has loved her - she loves him and would never hurt him. Maxine later confronts Fred and asks for his blessing - she invites him to a family meal and tells him his attendance will go a long way towards making amends for the last 23 years. Fred backs down, apologises to Ashley and wishes them well - Ashley insists an apology is due to Maxine. Later, Fred makes a gracious and sincere apology to both of them - they bury the hatchet and toast to the future. Ashley wonders what made Fred change his mind. Maxine insists she wants a church wedding in September and suggests the Caribbean.

Kevin and Alison have breakfast at the café and decide to have a housewarming party. Hayley wishes them well for the future. Alison reveals she won't invite her parents - they would not approve of her living with a married man and seem to think she is living with a girlfriend.

The factory girls talk in the pub about Underworld closing but Alma assures them that Mike is just playing games. Hayley tells Linda that Alma is her friend and she doesn,t want her hurt. Linda tells Mike she wishes they could be more open about their relationship but Mike cannot take the risk.

Ravi invites Alma out to dinner. Reluctantly, she accepts. Audrey tells her to go for it. Alma has reservations about meeting Ravi in the Rovers beforehand.

Natalie tells Leanne that if she wants a fresh start, it's not worth playing games, she might as well go for the divorce. She explains it takes 2 years if both parties consent, but five otherwise. Adultery speeds things up further. Audrey crows to Janice about how well Nick is doing working for Stephen. Janice and Les inform Leanne and tell her she is entitled to a share of Nick's new found success. Leanne tells Gail she resents scrimping in the past to enable Nick to go to college - having made her sacrifice, she now wants her cut.

Sally is still having a hard time with Rosie and expresses her jealousy to Kevin about the "wonderful time, Rosie has with Kevin and Alison". Sally feels Rosie is being rewarded for her bad behaviour - Sally's stance annoys Kevin. Rosie does a bunk from school and turns up at the garage, but Kevin is out. Alison sees Rosie and steps into the breech - she takes her to the café as Rosie has not had any lunch. Sally is furious at Alison "treating" Rosie and Sharon does her share cranking up her emotions. She storms round to Kevin's and tears a strip off Alison - Kevin supports Alison and tells Sally she is out of order. Later on, Sally returns to apologise and expresses her frustrations with Rosie's behaviour.

Alma is panicking about her night out with Ravi and looks for ways to get out of her date, but Audrey tells her to go ahead and enjoy it. After Alma has had her hair done, she goes to see Ravi to call off the date - he suggests picking her up from Audrey's rather than in the public glare of the Rovers. At the dinner, Ravi expresses the difficulties of getting over a relationship - Alma gets all weepy and tells Ravi she doesn,t know what she wants. Ravi is very considerate and understanding - he suggests Alma has an honest talk with Mike.

Maxine finds out that it takes ages to sort out a booking for weddings and worries when they will be able to get married. Fred tells her and Ashley that he would be delighted to meet Maxine's parents.

Alison is full of happiness at moving in with Kevin and how much she enjoys waking up to Kevin. Linda cynically pours cold water on the relationship.

Gail is furious about Leanne's determination to get pursue Nick for a divorce settlement and wonders how Leanne found out Nick was working. Audrey admits she told Janice. Leanne cockily tells Natalie how she is going to hold Nick to ransom over the divorce - Natalie counsels not playing games. Leanne reconsiders her approach, especially with Nick being so far away. She tackles Gail and tells her the price for the divorce settlement is £5000.

Alma pops into Underworld to talk to Mike. He is curt in his manner but Alma says she wants to discuss the divorce amicably - he calms down and agrees to her suggestion they have a meal together. Linda doesn,t look best pleased. The factory girls discuss Alma's visit, surmising its likely implications. Linda tackles Mike to find out why Alma came round, concerned that they might get back together. Mike reassures her this isn't going to happen. Alma tells Audrey that events are spiralling out of their control and that is why she needs to talk to Mike. Linda accuses Hayley of knowing that Alma was going to visit Mike - she warns off Hayley. Janice and Alison pull Linda's leg about her being miserable because her boyfriend is giving her a tough time and wonder why they have never seen him.

Jack gets a letter from the hospital - it is an appointment next week for the angiogram. Jack looks crestfallen.

Gail pops round to see Sally - she thinks Sally should be enjoying herself and asks about Danny. As they talk, Rosie escapes from the flat into the street. Linda finds Rosie out in the street and brings her into Kevin and Alison's party. Sally turns up to collect her, furious at Rosie's behaviour and at how she has successfully played one parent off against the other.

It's the meeting of the prospective in-laws as Ashley's mum and Fred meet Maxine's parents. Maxine's parents are full of plans for her wedding. The evening is spent with both sets of parents crowing about their offspring. Fred announces that he is Ashley's father, which has the effect of stunning Maxine's parents. Everyone resolves to keep Fred's admission a secret. Fred is totally oblivious of his faux pas.

4644 - Sunday 11 July
Martin catches Tyrone peeping through the windows of Natalie's house and tells him off, thinking he is casing the joint.  Tyrone turns up at the Rovers asking to rent Natalie's house. When he finds out she wants £400 a month, he is horrified, but offers £30 a week, cash in hand!! Natalie isn't impressed. Jack is highly amused. Tyrone tells Jack that his present living arrangements are unsatisfactory and he needs some stability. Jack says he might be able to help and tells Vera that they could let the room at the top of the house to Tyrone. Vera thinks he would lower the tone. Jack suggests that, having Tyrone staying would solve a number of problems, as he could help around the B&B in return for reduced rent. When Tyrone calls round, Vera is forced into a corner and reluctantly agrees, much to Tyrone's delight.

Rosie remains defiant. In the evening, Sally picks up the girls from Kevin and Alison's, but Rosie continues being awkward and refuses to go home. Kevin tells Sally that it would be best if Rosie stayed with them to let her calm down.

Ashley and Maxine review the "meet the in-laws" get-together. Although there were a number of faux-pas, it's all going the right way. They decide on a big wedding, especially if her folks are paying.

Gail isn't happy with Leanne's demand for cash from Nick. Martin cannot envisage Leanne pursuing the case. Gail wonders whether it might be worth paying off Leanne with some money she has. Martin isn't happy with the money being used for this purpose. He calls on Leanne and she tells him she is entitled to a settlement, especially as they made sacrifices so that Nick could go to college. He tells her that if her intention is to punish Nick, it will be him and Gail who pick up the tab. Leanne says she couldn't care less.

Later on, she comes round. Ashley tells Maxine that if they are not going to be able to get married until the spring then it might make sense to move in together - that way they will be able to save up more.

Alison is getting Rosie ready for school. The child tells her she needs a packed lunch as she no longer has school dinners. Kevin promises to reward Alison by taking her out. Kevin tells Sally that they were late getting Rosie off to school, getting her packed lunch ready. Sally replies that Rosie is on school dinners and lambastes him for not being supportive. She tells him that if he and Alison are such experts they can have Rosie till the end of the week. Backed into a corner, Kevin agrees. Later, he tells Alison there has been a change of plan and that Rosie is staying the week with them. Alison is put out because she hasn,t been consulted. He tells Alma he is taking her out to Delphine's and gets upset when he finds out that Ravi has taken her there already. Mike thinks that Alma is trying to make a fool out of him and insults her. Regretting his mistake, he apologises. Alma tells Mike that they cannot rewrite history, the marriage break up has been like coming to terms with a death. Mike gets irritated with Alma mentioning Ravi. When she tells him that, at least Ravi listens, Mike mocks and then storms out. Mike comes home to find Linda on the doorstep.
