6 April 1999

Hi folks. Sorry about the delay in the updates but there's a valid and quite wonderful reason which I won't bore you with!! Anyway, next week's update may also be delayed so bear with me until things get back to normal after my Easter vacation from University. I've had a great Easter weekend, the sort of fantastic weekend that happens once, twice a year (for me, anyways) involving copious amounts of Guinness, Mexican waves at the Sunderland match on Saturday when we beat West Brom 3-0, my dog Sophie chewing up 2 pairs of the ex-husband's girlfriend's shoes (I KNEW that training would pay off!), sitting in the garden having breakfast in the sunshine, oh, and a punk band - thankfully it didn't all happen on the same day. So it's been a great weekend, and not a chocolate egg in sight.

Anyway, on with this week's Coronation Street update.

Audrey's not pleased when Tom and Maxine open up shop above the salon with their new hairdressing venture 'A Cut Above'. She offers them both their jobs back which they accept, waffles on about equal partnerships in the business and then promptly sends Maxine to put the kettle on for a cuppa.

Leanne and Nick have been in turmoil this week over her pregnancy, with Nick furious when he found out about the missing £200 from their joint bank account. There's been tears and histrionics all week (and Leanne hasn't been much better!) when Nick tries to persuade Leanne to have an abortion, telling her it'll be a hard decision but the right one. He confides in Miranda at college who suggests Leanne has the abortion and then he lies to Leanne, telling her he hasn't told anyone. He also asks Martin for advice about an abortion and offers to pay for Leanne to have the op done privately to speed things up. And what would Gail think of her lovely son if only she knew?!

Tracy sends her parents flowers as a thank you for putting up with her last week, and it's not long before Ken and Deirdre are back sub-duvet again when Ken asks her to move back in with him. What *would* Blanche say?! The girls in the factory gossip about Deirdre and Ken and when Mike finds out they're back together again, he has a bit of a mean chuckle, in that way he does so well.

Roy and Hayley meet Jessica, a new vicar at Emily's church, who agrees to marry them on the 21st April (which Roy is quick to point out is the Queen's birthday) at 2pm. Toyah's chuffed to be asked to be bridesmaid. Roy wants a small do, about 10 guests but Hayley wants all her friends there, even if it means asking Les Battersby to accompany Janice. However, Janice tells them both they don't have to ask Les, so that's a relief all round.

Gary takes up window cleaning in the street and Charlie West gives him Jack's old cart, Bertha. Jack has a word with Gary about the perks of the job, telling him he had so much crumpet when he was cleaning windows, "If I'd have had any more, I'd have had to tek a lad on!" but Gary tells him he's not interested and only doing the job to make money for Judy and the (have you noticed how huge they are these days?) twins.

Ashley and Curly find out that Tyrone is sleeping rough in the bins at the back of Freshco and although they take pity on him, Curly and Deirdre are wary that it means Jackie Dobbs might be making a return (a nation worries too!). However, it looks like Tyrone has ran away from home and Deirdre gives him a fiver to get himself some food.

Julia Stone turns up at the factory and gives Mike the glad-eye (I just love that expression...), and invites him to share her hotel room for the rag trade ball on Friday night. The old slapper (Mike, of course) smirks and you just know he's not worthy of Alma, and never has been.

And that's about it for this week. The lovely Spider hasn't been in it much this week, if at all, crikey, but it's been good to see Ken and Deirdre with smiles on their faces at long last.

13 April 1999

Another hurried update this week folks, so bear with me and next week all will be back to normal.

Hayley and Roy plan their wedding, asking Alma to be matron of honour, and she accepts. Roy is less sure who to ask to be his best man and Hayley has to deter him from asking Gail, so he asks Martin instead. They plan their honeymoon in York and Hayley starts making her wedding dress using the sewing machines in the factory.

Gary's now taken up window cleaning and Emily gives him a bottle of 'Percy's preparation', a formula Mr Sugden discovered during the war and guaranteed to clean the smeariest of windows. (What do you mean, there's no such word as smeariest?)

When Alma finds out she has to go on a training course in Birmingham, Mike arranges to go to the rag trade ball alone, so he can spend the night with juicy Julia in her hotel room. Just when things are looking up for Mike, in walks Alma after her course was cancelled and Mike and Julia's night of passion will have to wait a while longer.

Tyrone turns up on the Street, sleeping rough in the bins at the back of Freshco until Curly takes pity on him and offers him a job collecting trolleys in the store. Kevin arrives back on the Street, and he and Curly have a heart to heart about how they both ran away from their problems and came back to face them. Crikey. Since when have Kevin and Curly turned into 'new men'? I can't handle it, and preferred them as the neanderthals we all knew and loved.

Leanne has her abortion but tells everyone it was a miscarriage. However, when Gail rattles on about her sensitive son, Nick, Leanne tells Gail the truth, that Nick paid for her to have the abortion done, quick sharp in a private hospital.

Ken and Deirdre's relationship attracts a few comments on the Street with Audrey telling them they're both like 'Summat out of a Catherine Cookson'. When Audrey comments to Rita that Ken and Deirdre have a lot of mileage between them, Rita sagely replies, in a moment of pure poetry: "Mileage doesn't count, it's destination that matters".

With Kevin back on the Street, Alison isn't best pleased to find out he's been back all weekend without contacting her, yet he's already been to see Sally and the girls. Coronation Street's own Hinge & Bracket, (Alison and Linda) mope in the Rovers about men, life and the universe while Sally and Sharon gossip about Nat "She's had more men than the grand old duke of York!"

That's all for this week.

27 April 1999

Well here I am again, complete with apologies for last week's missing update. It's almost the end of my first year as a mature student, and I have 6 end of term assignments to hand in over the next 3 weeks. I've only done one so far, and with the remaining 5 hanging over my head, I thought I'd take a break to write the update then start another essay later today. The dog is asleep at my feet as I write, she's looking clean and fluffy (for a change) and quite adorable as she snores into my socks. Anyway, without any further ado, here we go with this week's Coronation Street update.

It's the day of Roy and Hayley's wedding and Hayley is in her dressing gown at Alma's when Audrey and Maxine arrive to do her hair and make up. Over at the flat, Martin calms a nervous Roy. Hayley's Aunty Monica and Uncle Bert arrive at Alma's flat and Hayley tells them both how happy she is that they turned up, to which (the not really understanding) Uncle Bert replies "Come on now Harold, put a pair of trousers on and come home we me and your Aunty". Les wonders what Toyah is doing all dressed up, and when she tells him she's going to be bridesmaid, he sends her up to her room, where, assisted by the lovely Spider she escapes out of the back window. Everyone's on their way to the church but what they don't know is that Les has tipped off the press and there's a couple of hacks waiting outside of the church. When Emily finds out, she stops Roy and Martin in their car before they get to the church, and Roy has to break the news to Hayley in her car that the wedding's off. Or is it? Everyone traipses back to the cafe, disappointed, and Roy and Hayley have a heart to heart when she thanks him for trying to make her dream come true. However all's not lost. With the guests in the cafe and the bride and groom themselves, Jessica holds a ceremony right there and then and blesses the relationship, with (the more understanding this time) Uncle Bert giving the bride away. Just when Roy thinks he can't possibly be any happier, Hayley surprises him by announcing she's had her surname changed by deed poll from Patterson to Cropper. As the happy couple leave the Street for their honeymoon in York, Hayley throws the bouquet and it's hard to know who's more surprised, Ken or Deirdre, when Deirdre catches it squarely. Janice takes one of the pans tied to the back of the wedding car and chases Les down the cobbles with it for spoiling Roy and Hayley's church blessing.

After Mike's attempts to contact Julia lead nowhere, he calls at her flat, only to find that she's moved out and taken all her stuff with her. Curiouser and curiouser. But then, he receives a package in the post, and it contains pictures of the two of them in bed together. Mike is on edge for a few days until Julia calls him and demands £10,000 for the negatives. Things might look bad for Mike right now but they look even worse for poor Alma. Mike is just about to tell her about his night with Julia when Alma comes out of the bedroom in her dressing room, telling Mike she'd found a lump in her breast. He promises her the best treatment money can buy and before you can say "BUPA" she's seen the doctor and been referred to a specialist at a breast clinic later this week. Deirdre notices Mike's distraction at work and tells him she's there for him as a friend if he wants to talk about anything.

The lovely Spider develops a crush on Nita and she invites him to her flat above the corner shop for dinner, but she's only interested in his friendship. He doesn't realise this though, and starts getting all misty-eyed about meeting the right girl to settle down with and have children. Poor Spider, she's not worthy of you, petal.

Over at Curly's house, Kevin and Tyrone are making themselves at home. Kevin plans a romantic night in with Alison when Tyrone offers to go out, which was rather decent of him. However, just as Kev and Alison start snogging on the sofa, in walks Tyrone and Marcus and Kev has to shell out a tenner to get rid of them both. Result! Tyrone's plan worked once again.

Watch out Canada, Nick Tilsley's on his way over with a one way ticket and histrionics. Leanne decides she's not going to sit in on her own every night and cry over him and organises a night out with Toyah and Sharon in town. Ashley, bless him, does his best to look after her and asks uncle Fred for a reduction in her rent now she's on her own, but Fred won't hear of it and reminds Ashley Leanne is still a married woman. "And you know the trouble with married women?" he asks his nephew, "Husbands!"

And that's about that for this week's update.

Glenda :)
