This week was a schad week on Coronation Street as Schmeichel the Great Dane schnuffed it and went to the kennel in the schy. The dog fell ill with liver cancer and Chesney was torn between spending money on vet bills and operations that could make his pet worse, or doing right by Kateh and the babeh and saving his cash. With bailiffs banging on the door for overdue rent, Owen loans Chesney and Katy some money which Chesney blows on vet's bills for the dog. Even Kirk knows that Chesney's putting good money after bad and he says: "If he could talk, he'd say ‘Ches, dude, no more operations'." And so, the dog dies and Chesney's in bits. But I'm just glad that with the big four-footed fella gone, I won't have to figure out how to spell Schmeichel in the weekly update any more. It ain't been easy, folks.

There were more tears and puppy-dog eyes over at Lloyd's house this week when he breaks down as Chris tells him he and Cheryl have been having a fling behind his back and under his roof. Craig Charles played a blinder this week as Lloyd, and for this fan, stole every scene he was in. I didn't shed a tear when Schmike.. Shemiek.. the big dog died, but I did well up when Lloyd broke down.  Steve does his best to cheer up his mate and there were some lovely scenes between the two of them.  To add to Lloyd's heartbreak, he's got a bad back and is in shock and awe when he finds out that Katy and Chesney Brown plan to call their baby James, and they'd never even heard of the soul legend. "There's a whole generation who doesn't know who James Brown is," sighs Lloyd, before he has another little cry.

Anyway, you remember how Carla lost her workforce, her orders, her machinists, her money, her oomph? Well, fear not because she's swanned off to Los Angeles to, in the modern parlance of the day, get her head together, and while she's away the factory's only been gone and saved by Michelle. Yes, Michelle has morphed into Ms Business overnight and will be appearing on the Apprentice next week where Lord Alan Sugar will hire her because she's got right shiny hair. So, Michelle and Ciaran are now engaged and swanned back onto the Street this week, fresh from cruising around wherever it is they've been cruising, doing whatever it is they've been doing. Michelle saves the factory, gets Carla's machinists back to work and with Nick Tilsley's help secures a new order too.  And all this while Ciaran looks moodily on, has a beer with Peter and tells Michelle he doesn't want to get married after all, he wants to go back on the cruise ship.

On a lighter note, and I love this Corrie coupling, Brian takes Julie to the Red Rec for a night out spotting little green men. He's into UFOs is Brian and although their night on a blanket is romantic for Julie, they don't spot anything unusual in the sky.  When Tommy and Tyrone find out what Brian's up to, they decide to make their own UFO to try to fool him in the darkness next time he takes Julie out UFO spotting.  Best dialogue of the week came from Tommy this week in Tyrone's living room as they're rigging up the flying saucer.  Tommy: "Get Tina a can." Tyrone: "Why can't you get her a can?" Tommy: "Cos I'm holding a UFO with a fishing rod, that's why."  Classic Corrie, wonderful stuff.

Mind you, Tyrone's new girlfriend Kirsty isn't best pleased. Although she and Tyrone are getting along fine, she's jealous of Tina and tells her she doesn't want her swanning around the house wearing nowt but a towel when she's fresh out the bath.  Tina's got more things to worry about as Matt takes her out for a meal with his middle-class medical mates and a nasty ex-girlfriend of his joins their night in Nick's Bistro.  Tina gets patronized and Matt does little to defend her, so she tells him where he can stick his stethoscope.
Ooh, it's here.

And that's just about that for this week..

This week's writers were Martin Allen, Mark Wadlow, Joe Turner, Carmel Morgan and Simon Crowther. Find out more about the Coronation Street writing team at:

Greetings and welcome to the Coronation Street Weekly Update.   And so without any further ado, here we go with this week's Coronation Street update.

Fiz is out of pris and out on bail on the Street where Sally Webster wastes no time in telling her exactly what she thinks of her and her no-good murdering, lying, cheating, kidnapping dead husband. How quickly Sally forgets that she once had a crush on John Stape when he used to pop round to the Websters’ to teach English Lit at the kitchen table.  Fiz does her best to settle in and Sally calls an uneasy truce when she offers Fiz the sniff of a job working for Frank.

Ciaran and Michelle forge ahead with wedding plans and Michelle gives him a wad of cash to take to the hotel to put down the deposit on the wedding venue. Well, he puts the deposit down all right but not at the hotel. He loses the whole lot in a poker game in the back room of the Rovers. It's a poker game that Kirk wins but then bails out of when the stakes get too high and that's when Ciaran loses his cash to Karl, who spends it in the bookies where Ciaran goes the next day to ask Peter for the cash back. Peter's not best pleased, as you can imagine, and tells Ciaran where he can stuff his wad of bills.

Julie and Brian cosy up again on the Red Rec in the hope of seeing some UFO activity in the night sky. Tommy and Tyrone are there with their DIY UFO, possibly made from MFI MDF and it does the trick in making Brian believe he's seen the real thing. Until he realises he's been had and then his face takes a stern turn.

Lloyd's still crying over Cheryl and then he loses the plot when he finds out that Cheryl's been into the house to take some of their stuff.  He rants and raves, drags a sofa outside and sets fire to it in front of all the neighbours.  Chris comes to see what the fuss and fire's all about and Lloyd shoves him, knocking him out on the cobbles. I don't know about you, but we cheered in our house at that point. Anyway, Chris gets taken to hospickle where he recovers and that's when Cheryl finds out that his tumour's receded and he's been lying to her for weeks that he was getting worse when he was getting better just so she'd stay with him.  Cheryl went round to Lloyd's place to tell him and there was even more crying from Lloyd. Thankfully, this storyline means that Chris, Cheryl and Russ Gray have all now left the Street - and what a waste of time they all were. There was a superb bit of dialogue as Chris left the Rovers in his final scene after everyone found out just what a cad he was.  Owen: "You're sacked!", Jason: "You're fired!", Stella: "And just for good measure, you're barred an' all!"

Dennis isn't happy this week when he finds out that Norris has given an interview to the Gazette telling them all about him.  It all comes about when the couple who were running the charity soup kitchen are up in court for fraud and of course Nozza goes along for a day out to gloat. That's when he meets the hack who puts Dennis' Rags to Rita's story on the front page of the Gazette much to Dennis' horror.  He's even more perturbed when a blast from his past, a woman called Norma reads the story and comes looking for him.

And finally this week, Nick takes an enormous cleavage with Eva behind it out on a date. Ooh, Gail won't be best pleased when she finds out about this.

And that's just about that for this week..

This week's writers were Damon Rochefort, Chris Fewtrell, Jayne Hollinson and John Kerr.  Find out more about the Coronation Street writing team at:

Best scene of the week for this fan was Rita and Dennis. Rita gets Dennis to meet the mystery woman who's turned up looking for him. Turns out that she's Norma and she was once engaged to Dennis but he did a runner on their wedding day when he knew he didn't love her.  Anyway, Rita makes Dennis have a heart to heart with Norma to clear the air and then afterwards Rita makes it clear, in a very subtle way, that she's got feelings for Dennis too. He also makes it clear, in a less subtle man-way that he's Just Not That Into Her because he's scared he'll do to Rita what he once did to Norma. Rita at least appreciates Dennis' honesty and as he turns away from her outside of the hair salon on the cobbles, she mouths a silent and teary ‘Thank You' to him.  That little scene almost broke my heart.

Ciaran leaves the Street this week after he gets sacked at the Bistro for moonlighting and Michelle finds out he gambled their wedding cash away. At first, Michelle determines to stand by her man and leave the cobbles for the cruise ship with Ciaran again. But as the taxi takes them off to the station, she stops the cab, gets out and has a cuddle with Carla and tells Ciaran she's not leaving. Which was a shame, ‘cos I'm not right fond of Michelle and I wish that she'd gone.

Another one I'm not fond of is that Stella in the pub. I've tried to like her but I can't and now I want rid of her now. Oh yes, I'm in one of those moods today. They bring her in, tell us she's Leanne's mum, she saves Leanne's life, she's held up as Saint Stella of the Rovers but is anyone warming to her? Not in our house they're not. She's brittle, one-dimensional and there's no redeeming features to her personality at all. Interestingly, Stella's daughter Eva and partner Karl are the ones who are growing on me. Eva was involved in a daft plot this week involving a wine warehouse and an ex-boyfriend that I won't bother writing about, except to say it was a ploy to bring Nick and Eva close togeva. Gail will hate this new pairing with a vengeance and it'll be great to watch.

Mind you, Gail's got more on her mind this week when little Max and his bad haircut come to live at the Platt's. Kylie and David get custody of Max but they've only got him five minutes before he does a runner to the Rovers, the place he calls home. Kylie accuses Becky of kidnapping her son and then has to apologise to her big sis when Max is found safe and well, although still with the bad hair.

Carla returned from LA this week. "Looking good!" says Peter Barlow when he spots her in the pub. "Did I tell you that you're looking good?" he repeats as his emotions carry him away just before Leanne comes out of the ladies loo and back into earshot.  Leanne's got a few lady problems in the downstairs arena and goes to see Doctor Matt as she's anxious to know why she can't conceive Peter's child. "You've had no problems before, you've been pregnant twice," snarks Peter. Ouch.

Becky gets her divorce settlement from Stevey-boy and tells Tracy that she's off to Mauritius to spend, spend, spend. "Where's Mauritius?" she asks Roy later when she takes him out for a slap up meal he doesn't want in the Bistro, money burning a hole in Becky's pocket already.

Sophie's not best pleased that Sian's got college homework to do which means she can't spend her evenings at the pictures with Sophie.  When Amber finds out that Sophie's home alone, she offers to go to the pictures with her instead until old-Uni mate Arj comes for a visit. And before you know it, Amber and Arj are getting jiggy upstairs in Amber's flat.  Sophie's a bit peeved at being dumped by Amber as soon as Arj arrived, so with Arj and Amber upstairs having a bit of how's your father, Sophie tells Dev just where his daughter is.  Dev's not best pleased and storms into the flat to find a half-naked Arj with his daughter.  How's your father now, Amber?

And finally this week, Ken's got gout.
