Greetings and welcome to the Coronation Street Weekly Update and welcome to yet another New Year. I trust you've all sobered up by now and are reading to get started with another round of words from Weatherfield. And so, without any further ado, here we go with this week's Coronation Street update.

Nick Tilsley shows worrying signs of maturity this week when Eva decides he's too old to be still living with his mum - and he doesn't disagree. Egged on by Eva, he goes to view a flat, with Gail tagging along for the ride.  And her verdict after the viewing? "I could sense death in that toilet." There's probably a special Harpic you can buy.

But never mind the loo of death, it's a teenage lesbian wedding we need to talk about now.   Done up in matching meringues, Sian and Sophie prepare to exchange vows at the church before it all goes screechingly wrong. Kevin tries to have words with Sophie before church, words about Amber and not being committed to Sian but Sophie doesn't want to hear. She marches up the aisle and just as the girls are about to swap "I do's", Kevin blurts out to all present that his daughter's having second thoughts.  Sophie falters at the altar as Sally with her fascinator and Sunita without join in Kevin's hymn until there was a chorus of dissenters and tears streaming down Sophie's face. Anyway, the wedding's called off and Sian leaves the Street driven away by her mum. Not many have left the Street driven away by their mum. I liked it, it was a nice touch.  Sophie spends the rest of the week in tears, telling anyone who'll listen that her life is over without Sian and she's got nowt to live for, not now.

Bad news for those of us who aren't fans of Stella Price. This week Karl takes Stella's Christmas present of cash from her Aunty Vi and puts it on a nag at the bookies where it wins big. This means Karl and Stella are closer to putting down a deposit to buy The Rovers Return. Tune in for next week's Stellanation Street.

Over at freaky Frank's factory, the wonderful Beth returned to Coronation Street and got herself a job as a knicker stitcher. As the country goes into recession, the bottom clearly hasn't dropped out of women's pants.  Frank's mum Anne doesn't want Beth working for them, she's clearly too common for someone like Anne but Frank knows Beth's a grafter and gives her a job. She says: "I'm so glad I glued me false tooth in now."

Meanwhile Anne pays Carla a visit at her flat and tells her if she drops the charges against Frank she can have Underworld back.  It's Bribery 101 and it's all heard by Peter but as he's hiding in the bedroom, it'll have to be Carla's word against Anne's for now. Carla finds out that Frank's hosting a drinks party at home for Underworld clients, so she storms round there and gives a little speech, letting Frank's customers know just what a sleaze ball he is.  Mind you, it's something that Sally hasn't cottoned on to just yet, and she's there at the drinks do, all dolled up. At the end of the night when it's just Frank and Sally alone on the sofa with the red wine, he tells her the wine reminds him of her. "It's strong yet delicate, with subtle undertones," he coos as Sally leans in for a snog. But he clearly doesn't know Sally very well. She's more of a cheap and fruity, little cheeky Lambrini.

Down at Nick's Bistro, there's a speed dating night. Julie and Marcus plot to get Eileen there in her best bib and tucker in the hope that she'll meet someone who'll take her mind off Fireman Paul and the romance that is going nowhere.  Eileen spends five minutes
being speed dated by a Grumbleweed before telling him to sling his hook and she pushes him against the fire alarm in the bar. The alarm goes off, the fire crew arrives lead by Fireman Paul and the romance that is going nowhere looks like it's back on.

And finally this week, Rosie gets a new agent and a new modeling job but when she finds out that she's modelling cycling wear, she's not best pleased.  She's even less happy when the agent eyes up Jason for some man modeling too.

Greetings and welcome to the Coronation Street Weekly Update. And so without any further ado, here we go with this week's Coronation Street update.

Sally snuggles up to freaky Frank this week and their cover's blown when Eileen and new girl Beth spot them snogging in the factory. Sally tells Frank she believes in his innocence: "I'm a good judge of character," she cooed. Oh, how we laughed on our sofa.

Another couple whose cover looks set to blow is Peter and Carla, or as I like to call them by their celebrity name, Carpet. Stella "come through to the back" Price tells Peter she knows there's summat going on between him and Carla when she spots the necklace she thought Peter had bought for Leanne sitting snugly around Carla's neck. Peter denies and lies. But Stella, desperate to keep her profile as high as possible by meddling in every other character's storylines so that she'll have more screen-time than a whole flock of Jack's pigeons ever did, refuses to believe him and keeps her beady little eyes peeled in the bar.

Eileen's fed up, again. Tired of being taken for granted by Jason, of eaten frozen turkey burgers for tea, of being on her own and desperate for a bloke, tells Paul that she wants him. When does she want him? Now! What does she want him for? Owt! Owt! Owt! Paul's a bit shocked but sees there could be something in what Eileen proposes, if only he could stop loving his wife Lesley so much, but there seems little chance. He cares too much and dashes home from a meal with Eileen in the Bistro when he gets a call to say Lesley's been asking a neighbour where he's gone.

The feud between Kirsty and Tina hots up. Kirsty finds out Tina's going to be driving Rita's car and arranges for the cops to pull her over for speeding. But it's not Tina the cops pull over for speeding, it's Rita whose driving instead. She was doing 33 in a 30 zone and gets hauled down to the cop shop. Sorry, but hang on till I put my anorak on. Just hang on. It's on now. Didn't the researchers know that the Association of Chief Police Officers have an official formula for calculating a speeding offence. It allows a leeway of 10% plus 2mph so Rita shouldn't have been clocked at all. But what do I know, I'm just a big lass. Tina knows Kirsty's behind Rita's speeding fine and when she confronts her, Tyrone listens at the door to hear Kirsty brag and confess. Poor Tyrone, just when it looked like he'd found someone he could love after Molly popped her clogs, Kirsty turns out to be as nasty as everyone thinks that she is and Tyrone throws her out. But this won't be the last we see of Kompletely Krazy Kirsty, WPC from Hell.

Down at Streetcars, Becky and Steve are at odds and he's being really nasty, still refusing to believe her about making Tracy lose the twins. But Becky's got plans for Streetcars and has dinner with Danny in an attempt to get a cab contract for his posh hotel in town. Danny, you'll remember, was the one who saw Tracy in distress on the night of his meeting with Steve and Becky at the hotel. The very same night that Tracy went loopy over finding out Becky and Steve were together at the hotel. So loopy in fact, that she had to be rushed to hospital, where she lost the twins. It's only a short matter of time before Danny tells this to Becky and the truth will come out about Tracy's miscarriage.

And finally, at the corner shop, it's Amber's 21st and Dev buys his daughter a car. Sunita is officially not best pleased that her husband has spent so much money on the gift and storms around the shop in a bad jumper and a huff.

Fed up and frosty, Sunita sacks herself from the corner shop this week and gets a new job behind the Rovers bar. She's never pulled a pint before but knows how to pull the punters and sets to wearing a skimpy top and a big smile. Mind you, Dev's not best pleased to find a cleavage with his wife behind it when he pops into the Rovers for a drink.

Kirsty's involved in a car crash this week and it looks like she's going to make a car crash out of Tyrone's life too. She flashes the blue, sounds the siren and speeds after Rita's car when Tina is driving Tyrone to town. Tina puts her foot down when she spies Kirsty following them, determined to drive to the cop shop and dob Kirsty in. But when the lights change to red at the crossroads and Tina has to slam on the brakes, Kirsty piles into the back of their car. Tyrone and Tina are cut and bruised badly but Kirsty's hit hard and rushed to th'ospickle. Tommy tells Tyrone he must do whatever his heart tells him to do so he visits Kirsty in her hospital bed. The nurse comes in to say that Kirsty's tests have come back fine, she's going to be ok – and her baby's doing fine too. Tyrone's shocked by the news and he walks out, he can't think straight, but it doesn't take long before Kirsty moves back into Tyrone's heart – and his house– and Tina moves out. The one person who is happy to hear Tyrone's baby news turns out to be Kev and the two fellas share a handshake for the first time in months.

Sally makes herself available for Frank all hours of the day and night this week. After his dad dies she's on kettle duty, then staying overnight on duvet watch and not giving a stuff what the neighbours all say. And they do say a lot. Rita and Gail pop round to talk to Sally about her going out with freaky Frank. "We're not here to judge," coos Gail. But she is, and she does. And will Sally listen? Will she `eck as like.

Becky grows closer to Danny this week, she's swept off her feet and falls for him hard. He reveals he's got a son, that he's a widower and Becky and the kid get on like a house, or at least, a first-floor flat on fire. And just when it looks as if things are going well, Danny announces his job is taking him away. Far away to Barbados. He hasn't yet asked Becky to go with him, but you know he just will - and she will. Before she goes though, Becky's determined to expose Tarcy's lies about losing the twins and she collars Deirdre having a crafty fag up the ginnel. Becky demands to know what she knows. But for now, Deirdre's staying very tight-lipped.

Owen's had enough of David and Kylie and blames them for pouring creosote into the pond and killing his fish. But it's not them that's done it, not this time around. It's the attention-seeking Faye who's gone and chucked the creosote in. Anna's called away to spend the night with her brother and sister in law (he's chopped a finger off and she's only gone and fainted and banged her head). And while Anna's away overnight, Owen finds out just what little Faye has done. He loses his temper and punishes her, hitting her hard, twice. Oh, Owen. Oh, Faye. Oh, those poor fish.

This was the week when I fell back in love with Coronation Street. It's had some top-class writing, warmth and humour and the smile firmly wiped off Tracy Barlow's big fat face.
And so it's to a wedding we go as Tracy and Steve march up the aisle to their McBarlow wedding.  The vicar asks if anyone knows of any just impediment to why these two should not be married in holy matrimony and Becky stands up, clears her throat, and sits down again.  She's got a bombshell to drop but she's not ready to drop it yet.
Back on the Street, Rita and Norris leave the wedding and return to work at the Kabin. Emily comes in later and agrees with Rita that the wedding went well. "Oh, but only if the same could be said about the reception!" coos Aunty Em. "Why? What's to do?" asks Rita.  What's to do, indeed.

But let's backtrack a little. Becky had only gone and broken into the medical centre computer system, armed with Gail's password after Gail joined forces with Becky when she found out that she was planning to bring down Tracy B.  With Kylie feigning a faint on the waiting room floor of the medical centre, all attention switched to her lying there.  Doctor Carter's attention was distracted just long enough for Becky to get into his office, log in, download and print off Tracy's records, proving that she'd miscarried the twins the day before she claimed Becky murdered them, pushing Tracy down the stairs.

And so, with cold, hard proof in her hand, Becky interrupted Steve's wedding speech in the Rovers and presented him with the truth about his new bride. "Revenge is all the more sweeter now he's chained to the cow," Becky told sister Kylie before legging it to the airport with new bloke Danny and his little boy.
But before she left the cobbles, Becky hugged the Croppers and cried, then took a taxi to the airport to fly away to Barbados with Danny. Steve ran after her, of course, and tried to beg her back but she held her head high and walked through the gate to get on the plane. It was first class. Not only her seat on the plane, but the whole storyline and send-off for Becky.  Who will call Roy ‘Royston' now?

Elsewhere this week. Anna dumps Owen when she finds out he's hit Faye. And there was a great scene with Owen and his daughters in Roy's Rolls when he asks Izzy and Katy if he was such a bad dad. Their silence says it all before they give him a few home truths about his parenting skills.

Over at No. 11, Eileen's desperate to keep Paul and offers herself up to be a carer for his wife Lesley when he's left with no one to look after his wife.  Caring for someone with Alzheimer's is a specialist task and one that Eileen has no experience of.  She does her best but Lesley smashes Eileen's telly and it's clear that she needs more care than Eileen is capable of, professional care.  There was a slightly, I thought, disturbing scene when Eileen hugged Lesley to comfort her, and all the time you're watching this thinking, Eileen's only doing this ‘cos she's desperate for a bloke. It's an excellent storyline though.  And the actress who's playing Lesley should be commended for her portrayal of a dementia patient.

Freaky Frank Foster's rape trial starts this week with Carla, Maria and Peter up in the dock.  Carla's in tears and Frank's got a sly grin on his face as he stitches up Leanne in the gallery. Just as the lawyer questions Peter and demands to know the answer to the question: “Are you having a relationship with Carla Connor?”, Peter falters and doesn't want to answer. Not in front of Leanne any road. And as he falters, Frank's mum Anne passes Leanne photos of Carla kissing Peter, photos that Frank's private detective has taken.  "Yes," admits Peter, defeated, while Leanne screams across the court room and runs out in tears.

On a lighter note, it's the music competition in the Rovers and Norris and Sylvia go head to head, she's on her uke-banjo and he's on his keyboard.  But Norris isn't playing, it's an automatic keyboard that plays itself so not only was he planning to cheat but then the keyboard packs up and Norris tells Sylvia the competition's off.  Ah, but there's a piano in the cupboard at the Rovers and everyone urges Norris on to tinkle the ivories instead. He's sweating because he can't play a note but fortunately Mary saves him from embarrassment by banging the piano lid down hard on his hands so that he can't play.

You'd think Sylvia would be irked by Norris' nonsense, but no. Her head's turned with Milton from her cruise ship, the rich American she met, who swans into the Rovers and sweeps her heart away.  "Milton Fanshaw the third," he says, introducing himself to Roy who replies: "Roy Cropper, the first."  The one and only, more like.   Roy's taken with the affection that Milton shows his mum and tells Hayley, somewhat bemused: "He actually appears to like her!"

Down the Street, Steve tries to get his marriage to Tracy annulled but for legal reasons he can't. Tracy has to want it, which she clearly doesn't, so Becky's revenge of having Steve chained to the cow looks set to ring true.  But how will Steve get rid of Tracy now?  Tracy moves into No. 13 when Ken chucks her out, determined to play happy families with Steve, which is the last thing he wants. "I don't love you, I've never loved you and I never will," he tells her.  So while he might have no choice but to live with her under the same roof, for Amy's sake if nowt else, he comes up with a plan to split the house in half and enlists Owen's help.

Over at the Rovers, Eileen tells everyone that she and Paul are a couple while Paul tries to look as if he's not there. It doesn't stop the gossips though, they've got their tuppence to say about Paul being married to a wife with dementia.  Jason gives Paul the worst kind of flak, which is rightly deserved, but over a bit of male bonding involving a power tool and a chunk of wood, Jason tries to understand Paul's despair at what's going on between Paul and his wife.

And this week's "Come Into The Back and Tell Me All About It" award goes to Deirdre Barlow who fell for the fatal line from Saint Stella of the Rovers.  Who will it be next week? Barlow's Bookies are open for you to lay your bets now.
