Coronation Street Books by Glenda Young

June 16 2018

It’s been a long time since Corrie choked me with emotion but it managed to do it last night. It’s the culmination of Toyah and Eva’s baby storyline when the truth comes out that baby Susie is really Eva’s. “She’s not your girl,” Toyah tells Peter and there’s tears everywhere – Peter, Toyah, Eva, me, everyone on our sofa. It was heartbreaking, but necessary as a secret is never kept too long in a soap.  And once the tears are dry, let’s get Toyah and Peter split up and apart and out of the Rovers. There’s never been chemistry between them and they’ve never been believable as mein hosts in the Rovers Return.

Speaking of which…

Liz and Johnny sleep together. Liz tells Johnny “it’s the grief talking” when he tells her he loves her, but she can’t deny she feels the same. Poor Jenny though, what’ll she do when she finds out? For find out she must, in soap, but not yet as she’s off to visit Mavis with Rita.
Over at Underworld, Alya changes the locks and Carla’s not best pleased. But when Alya sacks Fiz and the girls walk out in support, it’s Carla who gets the girls back to work. Does Alya say thank you? Not yet, but she will. She hasn’t got a clue about keeping the factory running or more importantly, keeping the girls under control.

Sean goes on a date with Fiz’s mate, Kim. But Sean is skint and yet ends up paying for the whole meal. Kim overhears Sean say he’s broke. It’s all a far cry from when Sean was holding two jobs down – Rovers and knicker factory – and the start of a downward spiral which will see him end up on the streets.

Aidan’s funeral (finally) takes place this week and there’s much weeping and crying, as you can imagine. It’s family only, Carla tells Alya, refusing her entry into the church. Eva runs out in distress when Johnny reads the eulogy.

At Michelle and Robert’s flat, Ryan was due to fly back home to Ibiza so Robert asks Ali to move in with them. But Ryan changes his mind and now Michelle’s stuck with her two sons living with her. I thought I’d hate this two-son story with Michelle, but it’s very funny so far, with both Ryan and Ali vying for their mum’s attentions.

Eileen leaves this week as she heads to Bristol with Nicola and baby Zack. Don’t worry, Eileen’s coming back, she’s just taking a break. Nicola, however, has gone for good. For now at least. In the meantime, Abi and Seb move into Eileen’s house until it’s let by the estate agent. Or at least that’s the plan but Abi has other ideas and pretends she’s Eileen to frighten off prospective tenants, telling them a murderer lived there.

And that’s just about that for this week.
