Interview with Kate Anthony, Coronation Street’s Aunty Pam

C
oronation Street
fans were invited to send in their questions for actress Kate Anthony, who plays Corrie’s Aunty Pam. With thanks to Kate, she’s kindly agreed to answer all the questions and I do hope you find this an interesting insight into one of Corrie’s quirky characters.

Q: Is the relationship with Bill Webster going to go further? Do you think they’ll get married?
A:
At this moment, Bill and Pam are good ‘companions’, which both Peter and I enjoy playing. As to a future, well who knows! And as for marriage, it would be Pam’s 5th but It would be a fun wedding. Can you imagine the size of Aunty Pam’s hairdo! I dread to think what outfit she would appear in!

Q: What happened to Whispering Geoff? Is he coming back.

A: It would be fun to have him around as I am sure it could lead to many more interesting escapades – however, it is ultimately in the hands of the scriptwriters.

Q: Where does Pam actually live?

A: Nobody is too sure where Pam actually lives, although she has been seen going in to the Duckworth’s with her own key on several occasions.

Q: Are you going to make Molly see the way of her misguided errors with Kevin and call a halt to the crazy affair?

A: Pam’s main concern is that Molly doesn’t get hurt and if she finds out about the affair, I’m sure she would do everything she could to quash it without anyone getting hurt.

Q: More serious storylines would be good for Pam as she has a good side to her, which isn't always about selling a deal.

A: I think you’ll see more of Pam’s many sides later on this year. But whatever she does, it is genuinely for what she thinks is for the best.

Q: Did you watch Coronation Street before you were cast in it?

A: Yes. From an early age I remember sitting down with my family at 7.30pm on a Monday and Wednesday evening. However, I have to admit I did miss watching it whilst I worked in the theatre.

Q: Are you happy to work on Corrie for a long time, or do you think as an actress, you should experience more varied acting roles?

A: Before Coronation Street I worked for 20 years as an actor on stage, radio and latterly on television. So I feel I have been fortunate to have a varied career to date.

Q: What is your best job to date?

A: Coronation Street of course.

Q: Which actors do you enjoy working with the most and why?

A: In the Street I enjoy working with all the different actors, as that’s what makes it so interesting – obviously I enjoy working with Molly, Tyrone, Jack and now Bill as the actors in question have such a good understanding of the characters.

Q: Who are your closest friends you work with on the street?

A: I’m very good friends with Rachel who plays Natasha and of course Vicki and Alan who play Molly and Tyrone. But everyone in front and behind the camera all get on very well. There is a great rapport amongst us all.

Q: Do you live in the North?

A: No. I live in London and stay in the North when filming.

Q: How often do you film and what time are you expected in to start work?

A: It very much depends on whether you are involved in a major storyline. If your character is, you can expect to be called from 7.00am – 7.00pm Monday to Friday. However, it is often 2-3 days a week on average.

Q: Do you like the clothes they dress Pam in or would you like something a little less anorak?!

A: When the costume designer takes me shopping for Pam’s clothes, I invariably say, “It’s horrid ……. let’s buy it”! As Kate, I don’t like Pam’s clothes, but for Pam, I think they are spot on.

Q: Are any of your real family in the entertainment business?

A: Yes. I have a brother who is an actor.

Q: Is it true that you have worked with Malcolm Hebden (Norris) before?
A:
Malcolm directed me at The Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough in a play called ‘Mr A’s Amazing Maze Play’. It was 16 years ago and I still laugh about the great time we had.

Q: How long have you been acting?

A: Almost 23 years.

Q: Did you go to drama school?

A: Yes. I went to the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art in London.

Q: If you weren't playing Pam what would your ideal role be?

A: Lady Macbeth! Failing that, any character that stretches and challenges me.

Q: Who are your acting heroes or heroines?

A: In the early days of my career I worked with Dame Judy Dench, who was inspirational. As far as heroes go, Ronald Pickup, Bette Davis and Sir Derek Jacobi.

Q: Who is your favourite Street character other than Pam?

A: I think Blanche is hysterical and I find it very hard to keep a straight face when working with Maggie, who plays her.

Q: What else would you like to achieve in your acting career that you haven’t achieved or done yet?

A: I’d love to continue with Pam for the time being and after that, who knows … maybe Hollywood needs a bit of Aunty Pam!
