Tracy was born in Batley, West Yorkshire in 1961. Her mother, Betty worked for the electricity board and her father was a salesman. She was the youngest of two daughters, her sister Maxine is a theatre nurse.

Tracy worked in theatre in education and community theatre before she graduated from Loughborough University with a degree in drama. She gained her Equity card by joining The Road Safety Show, playing Princess Crash Barrier and they toured schools teaching the Green Cross Code.

Tracy has worked as a presenter on Corners and But First This and on stage has appeared in productions of Road as Louise at The Octagon Theatre, Bolton, as Amy inThe Fancy Man at The Belgrade Theatre, Coventry, as Tanzi inTotterdown Tanzi at The Bristol Old Vic, Tom Jones at Worcester and Teaser, a one woman show also at Worcester. She has also toured as Sandra in Stiff Options.

On television she has appeared on Hale and Pace, Diamonds in Brown Paper, Aladdin, Family and Mother Goose. She played Flo in Channel 4's Diamonds and in 1989 she played David Jason's girlfriend Sandra in A Bit Of A Do, the first of three series; she also played Chloe in Coronation Street for one episode. In 1990 she played a singer in Riff Raff for the BBC and Terry in In The Dark also for the BBC. She went on to play Camille in Red Dwarf. In 1992 she played Sarah Ferguson in the film Charles & Diana: A Palace Divided, she was five months pregnant at the time. She also worked on El Cid. In 1994 she played Lou Clarke in Peak Practice which gave her the opportunity of working alongside her partner Richard Platt, who plays barman James White. She is also well remembered for three series' of the comedy Outside Edge in which she played Ginny.

1994 saw Tracy rejoin Coronation Street as Tricia Armstrong, single mother who was to date Curly Watts. She stayed with the show until 1997 when Tracy left to give birth to her second daughter. Tracy has also written a play about a women's weight-loss group on a northern council estate called The Life of Riley with co-writer, Brookside actress Beverly Hills.

Tracy lives in Hackney, East London with her partner of nine years, Richard Platt and their daughters Lois Talullah, born in 1993 and Nancy Eliza, born at 11.40am on 31st July 1997 at Honerton Hospital, weighing 8lb 4oz. She is a firm Labour supporter after her father in law Tom Platt was allowed to die on a hospital trolley whilst waiting to see a doctor. She is also a keen runner and competed in the New York City marathon in 1992.
