Diana Patricia Holme was born in Manchester on 20 July 1936, the daughter of a big band musician. She worked for Granada Television as an extra for over eleven years before being given a cameo role as Doris Jackson in A Family At War, she proved so popular that the role was extended to twenty episodes. After this she appeared in The Liver Birds, and in 1972 she joined Coronation Street as shop assistant Norma Ford and remained with the series for eighteen months. She then played Val in Ready When You Are Mr McGill. Diana then returned to the BBC as Dawn Duckworth in Sheikh Of Pickersgill followed by a cameo appearance as Diana Ollerton in Shoestring. She then joined Yorkshire Television and played a mother in Brother To The Ox.

Other television roles include parts in Send In The Girls, Juliet Bravo, Enemy at the Door, Willies Last Stand, Dog Food Dan and Johnny Jarvis. She also appeared in 20 episodes of How We Used To Live. Diana has worked extensively on stage in productions including When We Are Married, Nightfright, School For Scandal, Billy Liar, Rose, Comings and Goings, Blithe Spirit and Gaslight. She has also worked in pantomimes such as Cinderella, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Red Riding Hood and Babes In The Wood.

Diana joined Emmerdale Farm as Caroline Bates in 1983 and remained with the series for over ten years. After ceasing to be a regular, Diana continued to make guest appearances in the show. She has played the mother in the long running Lyons Cakes commercial and has performed in various radio plays as well as presenting the Yorkshire Television series Stepping Stones. More recently, Diana has played Mrs Birse in All Creatures Great and Small, Mrs Allen in Medics, Flower Shop Owner in Josie Smith, Gladys Starkey in Celebration, Annie James in A Touch of Frost and Mrs Grange in The Grand.

Diana lives in Manchester, she divorced her husband Peter in 1978, they had a son Stephen, born in 1963. She is god mother to Emmerdale actor Richard Thorp's daughter Emma and co-owns a race horse, Tom Cobley which came 6th in the Wembley Horse of the Year show.
