Jill Kerman was born in Mill Hill, London on 4 July 1946 and was educated at Copthall School. After leaving school she enrolled at RADA and graduated three years later. She then moved to Coventry where she worked in repertory theatre before making her West End debut in Spring and Port Wine, alongside actor John Alderton.

On television she is best remembered for her long running role as Penny Wheeler, fiancee to teacher Bernard Hedges in the comedy series Please Sir which ran from 1968 through till 1971 when the series turned into sequel The Fenn Street Gang. Jill also appeared in the feature movie of the series. Other television roles followed in shows including The Other One, Thicker Than Water, Crown Court, Now and Then, Bangelstein's Boys, Judge Dee and Fairly Secret Army.

In 1980 she joined Coronation Street as Mike Baldwin's girlfriend, florist Maggie Dunlop. She continued playing the role on and off until 1994. Jill has worked extensively on stage and has toured the country in various plays.

Jill lives in Clacton On Sea with her husband, heating engineer Nicholas Dance and they have a daughter, Kira.
