After training at the Rose Burford College of Speech and Drama, Jim appeared in National Theatre Productions including Six Characters in Search of an Author, Hey Luigi, Fathers and Sons and Ting Tang Mine. Other stage work includes a year with the Royal National Theatre, Levi in Joseph and His Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Luigi in Can't Pay Won't Pay and Father O'Neil in The Spanish Play.

On television he played Pete Whitley in Emmerdale for two years before his character was killed off in an hit and run accident in 1990. He played Mr Fairbanks in Families, a van driver in 3 7 11, a stall holder in Heartbeat and a drunk in Criminal.

In 1992 he played Jim Clayton in Heartbeat then played Steve, the photographer in A Touch of Frost in 1993. Also that year he began a long running role as Mr Woods in the children's drama Children's Ward. In 1994 his CV claims he joined the cast of Coronation Street as violent father Carl Armstrong - but there is conflicting evidence on this - see above.

Jim, who is single and lives in Leeds has also appeared as a shot gun robber in Crimewatch UK, in the drama Out of The Blue and for the BBC Data Protection show.
